2. Simultaneous Photocatalytic Abatement of NO and SO2: Influence of the TiO2 Nature and Mechanistic Insights

Abstract

Background: TiO2 is currently being incorporated into several construction materials, such as cement and asphalt because this photocatalyst can act as a passive system to reduce the concentration of typical urban pollutants like NOx and SO2 under solar illumination. Objective: In order to get further insights on the possible influence of the interaction between common pollutants, the present work investigates the mechanism of NOx photo-oxidation in the presence of SO2 traces over TiO2 samples of different textural and morphological characteristics. Methods: The performance for the photo-oxidation of NOx and SO2 in a dry air stream over TiO2 samples, both commercial and lab-prepared by hydrothermal and thermal methods, was evaluated by means of FTIR analyses of the gas phase. These materials were characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption isotherms, and DR UV-vis spectroscopy. Mechanistic studies were performed by in situ DRIFT under UV irradiation. Results: Photocatalytic tests showed a very efficient removal of the two selected pollutants using most of the TiO2 samples. In the case of SO2, elimination of these molecules is due not only to photocatalytic oxidation but also to a significant extent, to adsorption. Although in shorter periods, no byproducts are generated, following irradiation for several hours, the production of NO2 progressively increases and reaches 100 % selectivity over some photocatalyst. In situ DRIFTS analyses show the evolution of the surface composition and reveal the formation of the different types of surface nitrates with different symmetry. Under these operating conditions, a minor amount of sulfates are also formed. Conclusions: The presence of a low concentration of SO2 does not appear to be detrimental for NO removal. NO2 formation is delayed on the TiO2 samples with high specific surface area, which also tend to be more active. The spectroscopic results confirm the involvement of surface hydroxyls in the formation of adsorbed nitrate species.

Abstract

Aims: Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects 1–3% of the population aged over 65. Stress seems to contribute to PD neuropathology, probably by dysregulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. Key factors are oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal glucocorticoid-induced toxicity. Insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) has shown antioxidant and neuroprotective effects in some neurodegenerative disorders. Therefore, our aim was to study IGF-II protective effects against oxidative damage on a cellular combined model of PD and mild to moderate stress, based on corticosterone (CORT) and the dopaminergic neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+). Methods: The dopaminergic neuronal cell line SN4741 (RRID:CVCL_S466) derived from mouse substantia nigra were exposed to 200 μM MPP+, 0.5 μM CORT or both, with or without 25 ng/mL IGF-II, for 2.5 or 6 h. Cell viability, oxidative stress parameters, mitochondrial and dopamine markers and intracellular signaling pathways were evaluated. Results: The administration of MPP+ or CORT individually led to cell damage compared to control situations, whereas the combination of both drugs produced very considerable toxic synergistic effect. IGF-II counteracts the mitochondrial-oxidative damage, protecting dopaminergic neurons from death and neurodegeneration. IGF-II promotes PKC activation and nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 antioxidant response in a glucocorticoid receptor-dependent pathway, preventing oxidative cell damage and maintaining mitochondrial function. Conclusions: IGF-II capacity to protect nigral dopamine neurons against mitochondrial-oxidative damage induced by CORT and MPP+ was demonstrated. Thus, IGF-II is a potential therapeutic tool for prevention and treatment of PD patients suffering mild to moderate emotional stress. Universidad de Málaga. Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado intenta acercarse a lo que puede aportar el trabajo social en relación a las expectativas de futuro de los usuarios del Centro de Inserción Social Rafael Salillas de Huesca, con el propósito y objetivo de conocer sobre aquellos aspectos sociales, familiares y personales, entre otros, que resultan más representativos y que afectan, en mayor medida, en la toma de decisiones de los usuarios. Para ello, se hará uso de diferentes métodos de investigación como encuestas y entrevistas, tanto a profesionales como a usuarios del propio centro, con la intención de recabar la información más específica posible en relación al objeto de estudio propuesto inicialmente, sirviéndonos de teoría y legislación relacionada con el ámbito de actuación.

El pensamiento feminista y, en particular, la teoría de género son herramientas privilegiadas para dar cuenta de las imbricaciones entre subjetividad, economía simbólica y violencia en el poder contemporáneo. Las aportaciones de pensadoras como Joan Scott, Teresa de Lauretis, Donna Haraway y, de manera destacada, Judith Butler contribuyen especialmente a analizar la compleja realidad que habitamos, en la medida en que desarrollan una mirada atenta a las diferencias y crítica con el esquema de la diferencia sexual, defendido, entre otras, por Rosi Braidotti. El objetivo es proponer un cambio de paradigma que desplaza la política de la identidad hacia una política de lo común. La hipótesis es que este cambio de paradigma, que introduce una ontología de los cuerpos y de la interdependencia, es más adecuado a los desafíos de transformación actuales. Feminist thought and, in particular, gender theory are privileged tools to account for the crosses that occur in the contemporary power between subjectivity, symbolic economy and violence. The contributions of thinkers such as Joan Scott, Teresa de Lauretis, Donna Haraway and, notably, Judith Butler, contribute especially to analyze the complex reality that we lived, in the measure they develop a careful look at the differences and criticism with the scheme of the sexual difference, defended, among others, by Rosi Braidotti. The objective is to propose a paradigm that shifts the politics of identity towards a politics of the common. The hypothesis is that this new paradigm, which includes an ontology of bodies and interdependence, is more suited to today’s transformational challenges.

Abstract

Immobilized TiO2 is required for most photocatalytic applications, but obtaining the adequate mechanical and chemical resistance without compromising activity can be very challenging. In order to gain further information about the effect of the substrate on photoactivity, the influence of their physicochemical properties on the efficiency of TiO2 coating for photocatalytic air purification has been studied in this work. With this aim, two different chemicals, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and trichloroethylene (TCE), were selected as model pollutants to determine the behavior of photoactive layers under diverse experimental conditions. Hydrogen sulfide is a widespread compound, which not only causes nuisance due to its unpleasant odor, perceptible at very low concentrations (>0.5 ppbv), but is also responsible for corrosion in devices and materials. In this work, the efficiency for H2S photocatalytic degradation was compared for TiO2 coatings deposited on different UV-transparent substrates: borosilicate glass and two organic polymers, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and cellulose acetate (CA). In addition, TiO2 was deposited on plates made of either borosilicate glass, or natural magnesium silicates, and the performance of these immobilized photocatalysts was determined for the elimination of trichloroethylene (TCE), as a model pollutant. Comparison of the activity of TiO2 deposited on this ceramic support, with that of TiO2 deposited on glass can provide valuable information about the influence of the substrate porosity on the photocatalytic efficiency. Results presented indicate that TiO2 on sepiolite can be regarded as a hybrid photocatalyst, which combines adsorptive and photocatalytic properties.

We first perform a large genetic association study by merging all available case-control datasets and by-proxy study results (discovery n = 409,435 and validation size n = 58,190). Here, we add six variants associated with Alzheimer's disease risk (near APP, CHRNE, PRKD3/NDUFAF7, PLCG2 and two exonic variants in the SHARPIN gene). Assessment of the polygenic risk score and stratifying by APOE reveal a 4 to 5.5 years difference in median age at onset of Alzheimer's disease patients in APOE ɛ4 carriers. Because of this study, the underlying mechanisms of APP can be studied to refine the amyloid cascade and the polygenic risk score provides a tool to select individuals at high risk of Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract

El impacto de la contaminación del aire sobre la salud y el medioambiente es unapreocupación importante en la sociedad actual. Los compuestos orgánicos volátiles llamadoscomúnmente por su acrónimo en inglés (VOCs), contribuyen a fenómenos atmosféricos tanimportantes como el smog fotoquímico. Además muchos de estos compuestos producen daños en lasvías respiratorias y son considerados carcinogénicos. Dentro de las tecnologías para el control de lacontaminación, la fotocatálisis heterogénea ha demostrado ser eficiente tanto en fase acuosa comoen fase gas. Esta tecnología se basa en la excitación de un semiconductor con energía de longitud deonda adecuada, para generar pares electrón/hueco. Estos son capaces de reaccionar dando lugar aespecies altamente oxidantes, involucradas en las reacciones de oxidación-reducción. Las principalesventajas de esta tecnología frente a otros procesos radican en que permite degradar mezclascomplejas de contaminantes, opera a temperatura ambiente y se pueden emplear lámparas de bajapotencia o luz solar natural como fuente de excitación. A pesar de que la mayoría de los estudiosfotocatalíticos publicados en la bibliografía están relacionados con la degradación de contaminantesen agua, el interés por la depuración de aire, tanto interior como exterior, es cada vez mayor. Por otrolado, la mayor parte de los estudios fotocatalíticos en aire se realizan en condiciones muy alejadas dela realidad, en reactores discontinuos y elevados tiempos de residencia.Aunque el TiO2 es el fotocatalizador por excelencia debido a sus propiedades, bajo precio,abundancia e inocuidad, en los últimos años se han abordado diferentes estrategias para promoversu eficiencia. Los sistemas fotocatalíticos bifuncionales basados en un adsorbente y unfotocatalizador conocidos por su acrónimo en inglés (APHs) son una familia de materiales queofrecen grandes posibilidades para el tratamiento de contaminantes. Estudios realizados con la participación de la Unidad FOTOAIR, han demostrado que los materiales híbridos basados ensepiolita y TiO2 consiguen aumentar la velocidad de reacción respecto al semiconductor de referencia, disminuyendo la formación de subproductos de reacción y favoreciendo la mineralización. Màster en Diplomàcia i Funció Pública Internacional, Centre d'Estudis Internacionals, Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2013-2014, Tutora: Silvia Morgades Gil, En el presente trabajo de investigación se analizará si, en efecto, las víctimas o potenciales víctimas de trata pueden ser consideradas como refugiadas según el derecho vigente hoy en día. Con este objetivo, se realizará, en primer lugar, una breve exposición sobre el concepto jurídico del término “trata de personas” y los elementos que lo constituyen. Tras hacer mención a la definición de la condición de refugiado en el Derecho Internacional y a la vinculación entre la trata de seres humanos y la condición de refugiado, se examinará en detalle cuáles son los requisitos necesarios para que una víctima de trata sea reconocida como refugiada en el marco del Derecho Internacional. A continuación, se procederá a analizar la protección de las víctimas de trata de personas en la Unión Europea. Por último, se expondrá sobre la normativa española en materia de asilo, ahondando en la postura de las autoridades españolas ante el reconocimiento de la condición de refugiado para las víctimas de trata de personas.

Abstract

El sistema Dublin II y la armonización de los procedimientos de asilo y del contenido de las obligaciones de acogida de los demandantes son instrumentos del Sistema Europeo Común de Asilo cuyas disfunciones pueden comportar violaciones del CEDH. Así en el caso M.S.S. contra Bélgica y Grecia, el TEDH consideró que Grecia había violado el artículo 3 CEDH por las condiciones de detención y de existencia de un demandante de asilo, y que Bélgica había violado el mismo artículo por el traslado a Grecia del demandante en aplicación del sistema Dublín II. Los dos estados fueron asimismo condenados por violación del artículo 13 por las deficiencias en sus procedimientos de asilo y de recurso ante los tribunales. Por lo que respecta al sistema Dublín II, la sentencia del TEDH convierte a la cláusula de soberanía, inicialmente insertada en el mismo como medio para la preservación de la autonomía de los Estados, en un instrumento para la garantía del respeto de los derechos humanos, cuya activación ha dejado de ser completamente discrecional o regida únicamente por el derecho interno
