Emotions play a crucial role in information processing. Prior studies indicate that high-arousal emotions may elicit rapid, intuitive thinking, tricking people into judging misinformation as truthful. Yet, few studies have distinguished prior affective state from emotional reactions to false news, both of which may influence belief in falsehoods in different ways. Replicating and extending Martel et al. (2020), we conducted a pre-registered online survey in Austria (N = 422), investigating associations of emotions and discernment of false and real news related to COVID-19. We found no associations of affective state with discernment, but different emotional responses to false and real news — namely, more anger and less joy for false news. A curvilinear relationship of anger with discernment showed that both participants who were good and bad at discerning real from false news responded with anger. The automated analysis of 5,613 open-ended textual responses suggested that anger may have arisen for different reasons in these different groups. It seemed to also arise when people recognized the false news as such, not only when people accepted it. We conclude that studies need to distinguish between prior affective state and emotional response to misinformation and consider individuals’ prior beliefs as determinants of emotions.

A stochastic version with uncertain ordering lead time (OLT) is considered for the first time. Here, OLT represents the time elapsed between placing an order and receiving it (only an EOL product can be ordered). Stochastic integer programming model is developed for the objective of minimizing the expected sum of setup, purchase, inventory and backlog costs. To test the performance of the proposed model, computational experiments were done on various test instances and are reported. The results show that the performance of the proposed model depends on the size of the ordering lead times, the number of periods and components.

Within the setting of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we ask about the power of computers in the presence of gravity. We show that there are computations on $n$ qubits which cannot be implemented inside of black holes with entropy less than $O(2^n)$. To establish our claim, we argue computations happening inside the black hole must be implementable in a programmable quantum processor, so long as the inputs and description of the unitary to be run are not too large. We then prove a bound on quantum processors which shows many unitaries cannot be implemented inside the black hole, and further show some of these have short descriptions and act on small systems. These unitaries with short descriptions must be computationally forbidden from happening inside the black hole.

This project aims to implement new concepts, didactic methods, and teaching formats for sustainable digital transformation in Austrian Universities’ curricula by introducing new digital competencies. By equipping students and teachers with 21st-century digital competencies, partner universities can contribute to solving global challenges and organizing pilot projects. In line with the overall project aims, this article presents the ongoing digital transformation activities, courses, and research in the project, which have been carried out by the five partner universities since 2020, and briefly discusses the results. This article presents a summary of the research and educational activities carried out within two parts: complementary research and pilot projects., Dieser Beitrag präsentiert die Fortschritte des Projekts Teaching Digital Thinking (TDT) der letzten zwei Jahre. Das Projekt zielt darauf ab, neue Konzepte, didaktische Methoden und Lehrformate für eine nachhaltige digitale Transformation in die Curricula der österreichischen Universitäten zu implementieren, indem neue digitale Kompetenzen verankert werden. Durch die Vermittlung von digitalen Kompetenzen für das 21. Jahrhundert an Studierende und Lehrende können die Partneruniversitäten einen Beitrag zur Lösung globaler Herausforderungen leisten. In Übereinstimmung mit den übergeordneten Projektzielen werden in diesem Beitrag die laufenden Aktivitäten, Lehrveranstaltungen und Forschungsarbeiten zur digitalen Transformation, die von den fünf Partneruniversitäten seit 2020 durchgeführt werden, vorgestellt und die Ergebnisse kurz diskutiert.

Wikipedia is a community-created encyclopedia that contains information about notable people from different countries, epochs and disciplines and aims to document the world's knowledge from a neutral point of view. However, the narrow diversity of the Wikipedia editor community has the potential to introduce systemic biases such as gender biases into the content of Wikipedia. In this paper we aim to tackle a sub problem of this larger challenge by presenting and applying a computational method for assessing gender bias on Wikipedia along multiple dimensions. We find that while women on Wikipedia are covered and featured well in many Wikipedia language editions, the way women are portrayed starkly differs from the way men are portrayed. Previous work conducted by Laura Vuillier and Rui Sun (Vuillier, L., et al, 2018) found that participants' diversity of emoji usage on Facebook (aggregated at the country level) was related to country-level wellbeing. Here we would like to test whether this pattern is found at the individual level. Specifically, we predict that individuals' emoji usage diversity on Twitter is positively related to their subjective wellbeing. We would like to use data collected by Laura Vuillier, Rui Sun, and colleagues in 2016-2017 to examine this question. In this dataset, participants reported their Twitter ID, as well as completing questionnaires measuring their personality, wellbeing, etc. The Twitter IDs will be used to collect their publicly available tweets, process their text and extract users' emoji, and Shannon's Index will be used to calculate the emoji diversity for each participant. One topic that repeatedly sparks debates in politics and the society is “gender-neutral language”. For instance, in languages such as German, French, or Hindi, plural forms of job occupations and societal roles are often in a generic-masculine form instead of a gender-neutral form. Although meant as “generic”, this generic-masculine form excludes women from everyday language and might even entail the cognitive effect that listeners and readers will less likely think of women. Several studies have demonstrated this and related cognitive effects in the past. Due to the societal relevance of gender-neutral language, we propose a direct replication and extension of a classic German study by Stahlberg, Sczesny, and Braun (2001, Experiment 2; https://doi.org/10.1177/0261927X01020004004) in a multi-lab setting.

esophageal anastomosis dehiscence is a serious complication after esophageal cancer surgery with high mortality risk. One of the treatment options is self-expanding esophageal prostheses. Our aim was to evaluate the outcome of esophageal prostheses in the management of suture dehiscences after oncologic surgery.we performed a descriptive and retrospective study with patients diagnosed with esophageal anastomosis fistula or dehiscence treated by esophageal prosthesis between the years 2015 and 2021. We considered technical success as the correct positioning of the prosthesis with visualization of anastomotic leak closure after release of the prosthesis during endoscopy, and clinical success the resolution of dehiscence after removal of the prosthesis 8 weeks after positioning.technical success was 95% and clinical success 89%.in our center, esophageal prostheses are a treatment option for fistulas and anastomotic dehiscence after surgery with a high success rate and few complications.

A major question surrounding L and T type dwarfs is the evolution of their atmospheric structures on rotational timescales. Multiwavelength photometry allows us to probe different depths of the atmosphere and the different cloud layers that reside there. Simultaneous multiwavelength observations allow us to investigate further intricacies, such as differential rotation. Here, we present the results of near - simultaneous JKs multi-band photometry of SIMP0136, a known variable T2.5 dwarf. The observations were taken using the Perkins Telescope in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA and the data was reduced using the PINES Analysis Toolkit. The PINES Analysis Toolkit is a pipeline specifically written to deal with the systematics of Mimir, the infrared detector on the Perkins Telescope, while also optimizing reduction techniques for faint variable objects. As this project grows and additional objects are observed, we will complete a full investigation into the color modulation along the L/T transition region to attempt to determine the physical mechanisms affecting the evolution of atmospheric structure., {"references":["Gagné, J. et al. Laser powder bed fusion is a promising technology for local deposition and microstructure control, but it suffers from defects such as delamination and porosity due to the lack of understanding of melt pool dynamics. To study the fundamental behavior of the melt pool, both geometric and thermal sensing with high spatial and temporal resolutions are necessary. This work applies and integrates three advanced sensing technologies: synchrotron X-ray imaging, high-speed IR camera, and high-spatial-resolution IR camera to characterize the evolution of the melt pool shape, keyhole, vapor plume, and thermal evolution in Ti-6Al-4V and 410 stainless steel spot melt cases. Aside from presenting the sensing capability, this paper develops an effective algorithm for high-speed X-ray imaging data to identify melt pool geometries accurately. Preprocessing methods are also implemented for the IR data to estimate the emissivity value and extrapolate the saturated pixels. Quantifications on boundary velocities, melt pool dimensions, thermal gradients, and cooling rates are performed, enabling future comprehensive melt pool dynamics and microstructure analysis. The study discovers a strong correlation between the thermal and X-ray data, demonstrating the feasibility of using relatively cheap IR cameras to predict features that currently can only be captured using costly synchrotron X-ray imaging. Such correlation can be used for future thermal-based melt pool control and model validation. Este artigo apresenta aos resultados de uma pesquisa realizada no período de 2017 a 2019. Neste estudo, objetivamos destacar o aprimoramento nas discussões e trâmites relativos ao sistema de cotas na Universidade Estadual de Londrina – UEL. Para isso, utilizamos como método de pesquisa o materialismo histórico dialético e como procedimentos metodológicos a pesquisa bibliográfica, análise documental e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Os resultados demonstram que o sistema de cotas, nesta Instituição, passou por avaliações que o aperfeiçoou e ampliou. Concluímos, que este sistema se trata de uma política de inclusão tanto racial como social, e que requer acompanhamento e avaliação contínuos para que seus objetivos, declarados em legislação, sejam plenamente alcançados e, por fim, que se contribua para a democratização da educação superior.

Envelope thermal transmittance strongly influences building energy consumption, so there is a significant interest in using methods that assess it accurately. The quantitative infrared thermography method is among the most studied methods to assess thermal transmittance as this method could be used to analyse building envelopes qualitatively and quantitatively. However, its main limitation is the great variety of approaches. Their greater differences are the convective heat transfer coefficient and the place from which the measurement is carried out. This chapter comparatively analyses the experimental results obtained in previous studies. The analysis showed that the approaches from the interior using expressions of adimensional numbers allow accurate characterizations of thermal transmittance to be obtained.

Increased sharing of untrustworthy information on social media platforms is one of the main challenges of our modern information society. Because information disseminated by political elites is known to shape citizen and media discourse, it is particularly important to examine the quality of information shared by politicians. Here we show that from 2016 onward, members of the Republican party in the U.S. Congress have been increasingly sharing links to untrustworthy sources. The proportion of untrustworthy information posted by Republicans versus Democrats is diverging at an accelerating rate, and this divergence has worsened since president Biden was elected. This divergence between parties seems to be unique to the U.S. as it cannot be observed in other western democracies such as Germany and the United Kingdom, where left-right disparities are smaller and have remained largely constant.

Producción Científica, In construction projects, contingency reserves have traditionally been estimated based on a percentage of the total project cost, which is arbitrary and, thus, unreliable in practical cases. Monte Carlo simulation provides a more reliable estimation. However, works on this topic have focused exclusively on the effects of aleatoric uncertainty, but ignored the impacts of other uncertainty types. In this paper, we present a method to quantitatively determine project cost contingency reserves based on Monte Carlo Simulation that considers the impact of not only aleatoric uncertainty, but also of the effects of other uncertainty kinds (stochastic, epistemic) on the total project cost. The proposed method has been validated with a real-case construction project in Spain. Key pointsWe report a novel method for the transient expression of SARS-CoV-2 envelope (E) protein in intracellular organelles and the plasma membrane of mammalian cells and Xenopus oocytes. Intracellular expression of SARS-CoV-2 E protein increases intra-Golgi pH. By targeting the SARS-CoV-2 E protein to the plasma membrane, we show that it forms a cation channel, viroporin, that is modulated by changes of pH. This method for studying the activity of viroporins may facilitate screening for new antiviral drugs to identify novel treatments for COVID-19.AbstractThe envelope (E) protein of coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV-1 is proposed to form an ion channel or viroporin that participates in viral propagation and pathogenesis. Here we developed a technique to study the E protein of SARS-CoV-2 in mammalian cells by directed targeting using a carboxyl-terminal fluorescent protein tag, mKate2. The wild-type SARS-CoV-2 E protein can be trafficked to intracellular organelles, notably the endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi intermediate complex, where its expression increases pH inside the organelle. We also succeeded in targeting SARS-CoV-2 E to the plasma membrane, which enabled biophysical analysis using whole-cell patch clamp recording in a mammalian cell line, HEK 293 cells, and two-electrode voltage clamp electrophysiology in Xenopus oocytes. The results suggest that the E protein forms an ion channel that is permeable to monovalent cations such as Na+ , Cs+ and K+ . The E current is nearly time- and voltage-independent when E protein is expressed in mammalian cells, and is modulated by changes of pH. At pH 6.0 and 7.4, the E protein current is activated, whereas at pH 8.0 and 9.0, the amplitude of E protein current is reduced, and in oocytes the inward E current fades at pH 9 in a time- and voltage-dependent manner. Using this directed targeting method and electrophysiological recordings, potential inhibitors of the E protein can be screened and subsequently investigated for antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 in vitro and possible efficacy in treating COVID-19.

Additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) is an emerging solid-state metal additive manufacturing technology that uses deformation bonding to create near-net shape 3D components. As a developing technology, a deeper understanding of the processing science is necessary to establish the process-structure relationships and enable improved control of the as-printed microstructure and material properties. AFSD provides a unique opportunity to explore the friction stir fundamentals via direct observation of the material during processing. This work explores the relationship between the processing parameters (e.g., tool rotation rate Ω, tool velocity V, and material feed rate F) and the thermomechanical history of the material by process monitoring of i) the temperature evolution, ii) the force evolution, and iii) the interfacial contact state between the tool and deposited material. Empirical trends are established for the peak temperature with respect to the processing conditions for Cu and Al-Mg-Si, but a key difference is noted in the form of the power law relationship: Ω/V for Cu and Ω2/V for Al-Mg-Si. Similarly, the normal force Fz for both materials correlates to V and inversely with Ω. For Cu both parameters show comparable influence on the normal force, whereas Ω is more impactful than V for Al-Mg-Si. On the other hand, the torque Mz trends for Al-Mg-Si are consistent with the normal force trends, however for Cu there is no direct correlation between the processing parameters and the torque. These distinct relationships and thermomechanical histories are directly linked to the contact states observed during deformation monitoring of the two material systems. In Cu, the interfacial contact between the material and tool head is characterized by a full slipping condition (δ=1). In this case, interfacial friction is the dominant heat generation mechanism and compression is the primary deformation mechanism. Research shows that exposure to suicide-related news media content is associated with suicide rates, with some content characteristics likely having harmful and others potentially protective effects. Although good evidence exists for a few selected characteristics, systematic large scale investigations are missing in general, and in particular for social media data. We apply machine learning methods to classify large quantities of Twitter data according to a novel annotation scheme that distinguishes 12 categories of suicide-related tweets. We then trained a benchmark of machine learning models including a majority classifier, an approach based on word frequency (TF-IDF with a linear SVM) and two state-of-the-art deep learning models (BERT, XLNet). The two deep learning models achieved the best performance in two classification tasks: In the first task, we classified six main content categories, including personal stories about either suicidal ideation and attempts or coping, calls for action intending to spread either problem awareness or prevention-related information, reporting of suicide cases, and other tweets irrelevant to these categories. The deep learning models reached accuracy scores above 73% on average across the six categories, and F1-scores in between 0.70 and 0.85 for all but the suicidal ideation and attempts category (0.51-0.55). In the second task, separating tweets referring to actual suicide from off-topic tweets, they correctly labeled around 88% of tweets, with BERT achieving F1-scores of 0.93 and 0.74 for the two categories, respectively. These classification performances are comparable to the state-of-the-art on similar tasks. By making data labeling more efficient, this work has enabled large-scale investigations on harmful and protective associations of social media content with suicide rates and help-seeking behavior.

There is an increasing interest in future space missions devoted to the exploration of key moons in the Solar system. These many different missions may involve libration point orbits as well as trajectories that satisfy different endgames in the vicinities of the moons. To this end, an efficient design strategy to produce low-energy transfers between the vicinities of adjacent moons of a planetary system is introduced that leverages the dynamics in these multi-body systems. Such a design strategy is denoted as the moon-to-moon analytical transfer (MMAT) method. It consists of a general methodology for transfer design between the vicinities of the moons in any given system within the context of the circular restricted three-body problem, useful regardless of the orbital planes in which the moons reside. A simplified model enables analytical constraints to efficiently determine the feasibility of a transfer between two different moons moving in the vicinity of a common planet. Subsequently, the strategy builds moon-to-moon transfers based on invariant manifold and transit orbits exploiting some analytical techniques. The strategy is applicable for direct as well as indirect transfers that satisfy the analytical constraints. The transition of the transfers into higher-fidelity ephemeris models confirms the validity of the MMAT method as a fast tool to provide possible transfer options between two consecutive moons. The current work includes sample applications of transfers between different orbits and planetary systems. The method is efficient and identifies optimal solutions. However, for certain orbital geometries, the direct transfer cannot be constructed because the invariant manifolds do not intersect (due to their mutual inclination, distance, and/or orbital phase). To overcome this difficulty, specific strategies are proposed that introduce intermediate Keplerian arcs and additional impulsive maneuvers to bridge the gaps between trajectories that connect any two moons. The updated techniques are based on the same analytical methods as the original MMAT concept. Therefore, they preserve the optimality of the previous methodology. The basic strategy and the significant additions are demonstrated through a number of applications for transfer scenarios of different types in the Galilean, Uranian, Saturnian and Martian systems. Results are compared with the traditional Lambert arcs. The propellant and time-performance for the transfers are also illustrated and discussed. As far as the exploration of Phobos and Deimos is concerned, a specific design framework that generates transfer trajectories between the Martian moons while leveraging resonant orbits is also introduced. Mars-Deimos resonant orbits that offer repeated flybys of Deimos and arrive at Mars-Phobos libration point orbits are investigated, and a nominal mission scenario with transfer trajectories connecting the two is presented. The MMAT method is used to select the appropriate resonant orbits, and the associated impulsive transfer costs are analyzed. The trajectory concepts are also validated in a higher-fidelity ephemeris model. Finally, an efficient and general design strategy for transfers between planetary moons that fulfill specific requirements is also included. In particular, the strategy leverages Finite-Time Lyapunov Exponent (FTLE) maps within the context of the MMAT scheme. Incorporating these two techniques enables direct transfers between moons that offer a wide variety of trajectory patterns and endgames designed in the circular restricted three-body problem, such as temporary captures, transits, takeoffs and landings. The technique is applicable to several mission scenarios. Additionally, an efficient strategy that aids in the design of tour missions that involve impulsive transfers between three moons located in their true orbital planes is also included. The result is a computationally efficient technique that allows three-moon tours designed within the context of the circular restricted three-body problem. The method is demonstrated for a Ganymede->Europa->Io tour.

En este proyecto hemos llevado a cabo una experiencia docente de uso de recursos en la plataforma MoodleUA de forma autónoma con el alumnado de la asignatura Matemáticas Básicas que se imparte en el primer curso del Grado en Ingeniería en Sonido e Imagen en Telecomunicación de la Universidad de Alicante. En concreto, se han elaborado test autocorrectivos con soluciones e indicaciones de las principales fuentes de error en algunas respuestas incorrectas. El trabajo se ha realizado de forma colaborativa por los integrantes de la red y, en esta memoria, se explican los procedimientos seguidos y las conclusiones a las que llegamos con el uso de estos recursos. Creemos que es necesario llevar a cabo una estrategia complementaria de motivación del alumnado en esta asignatura, pues la falta de esta hace que los recursos desarrollados no cumplan su función, a pesar de que los estudiantes valoran positivamente que se les proporcionen herramientas complementarias para adquirir las competencias de la asignatura. Por lo tanto, daremos continuidad a la elaboración de otros recursos, estrategias y metodologías docentes que completen y complementen a los realizados por esta red.

Dielectric capacitors can store and release electric energy at ultrafast rates and are extensively studied for applications in electronics and electric power systems. Among various candidates, thin films based on relaxor ferroelectrics, a special kind of ferroelectric with nanometer-sized domains, have attracted special attention because of their high energy densities and efficiencies. We show that high-energy ion bombardment improves the energy storage performance of relaxor ferroelectric thin films. Intrinsic point defects created by ion bombardment reduce leakage, delay low-field polarization saturation, enhance high-field polarizability, and improve breakdown strength. We demonstrate energy storage densities as high as ~133 joules per cubic centimeter with efficiencies exceeding 75%. Deterministic control of defects by means of postsynthesis processing methods such as ion bombardment can be used to overcome the trade-off between high polarizability and breakdown strength.

Thus far, end-to-end (E2E) models have not been shown to outperform state-of-the-art conventional models with respect to both quality, i.e., word error rate (WER), and latency, i.e., the time the hypothesis is finalized after the user stops speaking. In this paper, we develop a first-pass Recurrent Neural Network Transducer (RNN-T) model and a second-pass Listen, Attend, Spell (LAS) rescorer that surpasses a conventional model in both quality and latency. On the quality side, we incorporate a large number of utterances across varied domains to increase acoustic diversity and the vocabulary seen by the model. We also train with accented English speech to make the model more robust to different pronunciations. In addition, given the increased amount of training data, we explore a varied learning rate schedule. On the latency front, we explore using the end-of-sentence decision emitted by the RNN-T model to close the microphone, and also introduce various optimizations to improve the speed of LAS rescoring. Overall, we find that RNN-T+LAS offers a better WER and latency tradeoff compared to a conventional model. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) of randomized controlled trials and real-world evidence (RWE) studies to determine the humanistic (e.g. health-related/disease-specific quality of life [QOL]) and economic (e.g. direct and indirect costs) burdens of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP). The SLR adhered to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Embase, MEDLINE and Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews databases were searched using OVID. Relevant studies involving adult patients with CRSwNP published between 1 January 2008 and 16 February 2019 were included, with relevant conference abstracts from 1 January 2017, onward. Sino-Nasal Outcomes Test (SNOT)-22 was the most frequently used disease-specific health-related QOL/patient-reported outcomes instrument for patients with CRSwNP. Baseline SNOT-22 scores ranged from 25 to 73 for surgical candidates and from 14 to 56 for medically managed patients with CRSwNP. Mean baseline EuroQol-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) index for patients with CRSwNP ranged from 0.81 to 0.86, and mean baseline Short Form-6 Dimensions (SF-6D) ranged from 0.67 to 0.75. Three months (EQ-5D) and 5 years (SF-6D) post-endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), rates increased from 0.81 to 0.89 and from 0.69 to 0.80, respectively. One year post-diagnosis, patients with CRSwNP had significantly more systemic prescriptions, underwent significantly more medical procedures, demonstrated greater health care resource utilization and had significantly greater mean health care costs compared with matched controls (all p This SLR identified substantial humanistic burden among surgery candidates. RWE shows that surgeries were used to treat relatively more severe CRSwNP patients as recommended by guidelines. Patient QOL is improved significantly after surgery; however, there is a lack of evidence on patients with revision surgery. Surgery is also associated with higher costs, and the presence of NP was a predictor of revision surgery. Patients with CRSwNP demonstrate greater health care resource utilization and costs compared to those with CRS without NP. Costs associated with different severity of CRSwNP and revision surgery need to be assessed further.
