The aging of precursor solutions is the major stumbling block for the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, for the first time we used the state-of-the-art in situ liquid time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry to molecularly explore the perovskite precursor solution chemistry. We identified that the methylammonium and formamidinium cations and the I- anion are the motivators of the aging chemistry. Further, we introduced two kinds of Lewis bases, triethyl phosphate (TP) and ethyl ethanesulfonate (EE), as new additives in the solution and unraveled that both of them can protect the reactive cations from aging through weak interactions. Significantly, TP is superior to EE in enhancing long-term solution stability as it can well-maintain the internal interaction structures within the solution phase. The PSC derived from a fresh TP-doped solution delivered a high power conversion efficiency of 23.06%, 92.23% of which remained in that from a 21-day-old solution.

The building block of in-memory computing with spintronic devices is mainly based on the magnetic tunnel junction with perpendicular interfacial anisotropy (p-MTJ). The resulting asymmetric write and readout operations impose challenges in downscaling and direct cascadability of p-MTJ devices. Here, we propose that a previously unimplemented symmetric write and readout mechanism can be realized in perpendicular-anisotropy spin-orbit (PASO) quantum materials based on Fe 3 GeTe 2 and WTe 2 . We demonstrate that field-free and deterministic reversal of the perpendicular magnetization can be achieved using unconventional charge–to– z -spin conversion. The resulting magnetic state can be readily probed with its intrinsic inverse process, i.e., z -spin–to–charge conversion. Using the PASO quantum material as a fundamental building block, we implement the functionally complete set of logic-in-memory operations and a more complex nonvolatile half-adder logic function. Our work highlights the potential of PASO quantum materials for the development of scalable energy-efficient and ultrafast spintronic computing.

Lithium-sulfur batteries are promising candidates of energy storage devices. Both adjusting salt/solvent ratio and applying quasi-solid-state electrolytes are regarded as effective strategies to improve the lithium (Li) anode performance. However, reaction mechanisms and interfacial properties in quasi-solid-state lithium-sulfur (QSSLS) batteries with high salt concentration are not clear. Here we utilize in-situ characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations to unravel aforesaid mysteries, and construct relationships of electrolyte structure, interfacial behaviour and performance. The generation mechanism, formation process, and mechanical/chemical/electrochemical properties of the anion-derived solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) are deeply explored. Li deposition uniformity and dissolution reversibility are further tuned by the sustainable SEI. These straightforward evidences and deepgoing studies would guide the electrolyte design and interfacial engineering of QSSLS batteries.

The interfacial stability is highly responsible for the longevity and safety of sodium ion batteries (SIBs). However, the continuous solid-electrolyte interphase(SEI) growth would deteriorate its stability. Essentially, the SEI growth is associated with the electron leakage behavior, yet few efforts have tried to suppress the SEI growth, from the perspective of mitigating electron leakage. Herein, we built two kinds of SEI layers with distinct growth behaviors, via the additive strategy. The SEI physicochemical features (morphology and componential information) and SEI electronic properties (LUMO level, band gap, electron work function) were investigated elaborately. Experimental and calculational analyses showed that, the SEI layer with suppressed growth delivers both the low electron driving force and the high electron insulation ability. Thus, the electron leakage is mitigated, which restrains the continuous SEI growth, and favors the interface stability with enhanced electrochemical performance.

Bioelectricity plays a significant role in major biological processes and electrical stimulation is an effective and non-invasive way to promote cellular growth, differentiation and tissue regeneration. In tissue engineering, piezoelectric materials not only act as modulators to regulate behaviors and functions of cells and tissues, but are also used as scaffolds to regulate and guide cell growth and matrix synthesis, thus promoting the formation of new tissue. Piezoelectronic electrons are produced from piezoelectric materials upon mechanical stimuli and have similar effects on cells as an external electrical field. Devices based on piezoelectronics have been widely applied in bioelectronics and biomedical fields. In this review, the effects of piezoelectronic electrons on cells and their possible mechanisms are briefly introduced. Then, we overview the applications of piezoelectronic electrons in cell regulation and tissue regeneration according to the type of cells and tissues. Finally, future perspectives and challenges are also provided.

Invasive electrical stimulation (iES) is prone to cause neural stimulus-inertia owing to its excessive accumulation of exogenous charges, thereby resulting in many side effects and even failure of nerve regeneration and functional recovery. Here, a wearable neural iES system is well designed and built for bionic and long-lasting neural modulation. It can automatically yield biomimetic pulsed electrical signals under the driven of respiratory motion. These electrical signals are full of unique physiological synchronization can give biofeedback to respiratory behaviors, self-adjusting with different physiological states of the living body, and thus realizing a dynamic and biological self-matched modulation of voltage-gated calcium channels on the cell membrane. Abundant cellular and animal experimental evidence confirm an effective elimination of neural stimulus-inertia by these bioelectrical signals. An unprecedented nerve regeneration and motor functional reconstruction are achieved in long-segmental peripheral nerve defects, which is equal to the gold standard of nerve repair -- autograft. The wearable neural iES system provides an advanced platform to overcome the common neural stimulus-inertia and gives a broad avenue for personalized iES therapy of nerve injury and neurodegenerative diseases.

We report here the development of clickable and highly near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent lanthanide (Ln) complexes for bioorthogonal labeling of biomolecules. These azide- or alkyne-functionalized Ln complexes are hydrophilic and fluorogenic, exhibiting a strong increase of NIR fluorescence upon conjugation with biomolecules. Metabolic labeling of biomolecules with azide or alkyne, followed by click labeling with the Ln complexes, enables NIR fluorescence (NIRF) imaging of DNA, RNA, proteins, and glycans in cells. Furthermore, multicolor imaging is performed by combining click-labeling with the Ln complexes and immunostaining. In addition, the Ln complexes is compatible with click-expansion microscopy (click-ExM), which enables high-resolution NIRF imaging of cellular glycoproteins. Finally, the Ln complexes can be used for time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) imaging, thus achieving the first example of dual-modal imaging combining NIRF and SIMS microscopies.

Inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites offer a pathway towards thermally stable photovoltaics. However, moisture-induced phase degradation restricts the application of hole transport layers (HTLs) with hygroscopic dopants. Dopant-free HTLs fail to realize efficient photovoltaics due to severe electrical loss. Herein, we developed an electrical loss management strategy by manipulating poly(3-hexylthiophene) with a small molecule, i.e., SMe-TATPyr. The developed P3HT/SMe-TATPyr HTL shows a three-time increase of carrier mobility owing to breaking the long-range ordering of "edge-on" P3HT and inducing the formation of "face-on" clusters, over 50 % decrease of the perovskite surface defect density, and a reduced voltage loss at the perovskite/HTL interface because of favorable energy level alignment. The CsPbI2 Br perovskite solar cell demonstrates a record-high efficiency of 16.93 % for dopant-free HTL, and superior moisture and thermal stability by maintaining 96 % efficiency at low-humidity condition (10-25 % R. H.) for 1500 hours and over 95 % efficiency after annealing at 85 °C for 1000 hours.

The chemisorption of an electrolyte species on electrode surfaces is ubiquitous and affects the dynamics and mechanism of various electrochemical reactions. Understanding of the chemical structure and property of the resulting electrical double layer is vital but limited. Herein, we operando probed the electrochemical interface between a gold electrode surface and a common electrolyte, phosphate buffer, using our newly developed in situ liquid secondary ion mass spectrometry. We surprisingly found that, on the positively charged gold electrode surface, sodium cations were anchored in the Stern layer in a partially dehydrated form by a formation of compact ion pairs with the accumulated phosphate anions. The resulting strong adsorption phase was further revealed to retard the electro-oxidation reaction of ascorbate. This finding addressed one major gap in the fundamental science of electrode-electrolyte interfaces, namely, where and how cations reside in the double layer to impose effects on electrochemical reactions, providing insights into the engineering of better electrochemical systems.

The availability of graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials on a wide range of substrates forms the basis for large-area applications, such as graphene integration with silicon-based technologies, which requires graphene on silicon with outperforming carrier mobilities. However, 2D materials were only produced on limited archetypal substrates by chemical vapor deposition approaches. Reliable after-growth transfer techniques, that do not produce cracks, contamination, and wrinkles, are critical for layering 2D materials onto arbitrary substrates. Here we show that, by incorporating oxhydryl groups-containing volatile molecules, the supporting films can be deformed under heat to achieve a controllable conformal contact, enabling the large-area transfer of 2D films without cracks, contamination, and wrinkles. The resulting conformity with enhanced adhesion facilitates the direct delamination of supporting films from graphene, providing ultraclean surfaces and carrier mobilities up to 1,420,000 cm2 V−1 s−1 at 4 K.

In patients with glioblastoma, resistance to the chemotherapeutic temozolomide (TMZ) limits any survival benefits conferred by the drug. Here we show that the convection-enhanced delivery of nanoparticles containing disulfide bonds (which are cleaved in the reductive environment of the tumour) and encapsulating an oxaliplatin prodrug and a cationic DNA intercalator inhibit the growth of TMZ-resistant cells from patient-derived xenografts, and hinder the progression of TMZ-resistant human glioblastoma tumours in mice without causing any detectable toxicity. Genome-wide RNA profiling and metabolomic analyses of a glioma cell line treated with the cationic intercalator or with TMZ showed substantial differences in the signalling and metabolic pathways altered by each drug. Our findings suggest that the combination of anticancer drugs with distinct mechanisms of action with selective drug release and convection-enhanced delivery may represent a translational strategy for the treatment of TMZ-resistant gliomas. Nanoparticles releasing an oxaliplatin prodrug and a cationic DNA intercalator within temozolomide-resistant gliomas in mice after convection-enhanced delivery inhibit the growth of the tumours without causing any detectable toxicity.

The ruthenium polypyridine complex [Ru(dppa)2(pytp)] (PF6)2 (termed as ZQX-1), where dppa = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline and pytp = 4′-pyrene-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine, has been shown a high and selective cytotoxicity to hypoxic and cisplatin-resistant cancer cells either under irradiation with blue light or upon two-photon excitation. The IC50 values of ZQX-1 towards A549 cancer cells and HEK293 health cells are 0.16 ± 0.09 µM and >100 µM under irradiation at 420 nm, respectively. However, the mechanism of action of ZQX-1 remains unclear. In this work, using the quantitative proteomics method we identified 84 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) with |fold-change| ≥ 1.2 in A549 cancer cells exposed to ZQX-1 under irradiation at 420 nm. Bioinformatics analysis of the DEPs revealed that photoactivated ZQX-1 generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) to activate oxidative phosphorylation signaling to overproduce ATP; it also released ROS and pyrene derivative to damage DNA and arrest A549 cells at S-phase, which synergistically led to oncotic necrosis and apoptosis of A549 cells to deplete excess ATP, evidenced by the elevated level of PRAP1 and cleaved capase-3. Moreover, the DNA damage inhibited the expression of DNA repair-related proteins, such as RBX1 and GPS1, enhancing photocytotoxicity of ZQX-1, which was reflected in the inhibition of integrin signaling and disruption of ribosome assembly. Importantly, the photoactivated ZQX-1 was shown to activate hypoxia-inducible factor 1A (HIF1A) survival signaling, implying that combining use of ZQX-1 with HIF1A signaling inhibitors may further promote the photocytotoxicity of the prodrug.

Cisplatin is an extremely successful anticancer drug, and is commonly thought to target DNA. However, the way in which cisplatin-induced DNA lesions regulate interactions between transcription factors/cofactors and genomic DNA remains unclear. Herein, we developed a dual-modal microscopy imaging strategy to investigate, in situ, the formation of ternary binding complexes of the transcription cofactor HMGB1 and transcription factor Smad3 with cisplatin crosslinked DNA in single cells. We utilized confocal microscopy imaging to map EYFP-fused HMGB1 and fluorescent dye-stained DNA in single cells, followed by the visualization of cisplatin using high spatial resolution (200–350 nm) time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) imaging of the same cells. The superposition of the fluorescence and the mass spectrometry (MS) signals indicate the formation of HMGB1-Pt-DNA ternary complexes in the cells. More significantly, for the first time, similar integrated imaging revealed that the cisplatin lesions at Smad-binding elements, for example GGC(GC)/(CG) and AGAC, disrupted the interactions of Smad3 with DNA, which was evidenced by the remarkable reduction in the expression of Smad-specific luciferase reporters subjected to cisplatin treatment. This finding suggests that Smad3 and its related signalling pathway are most likely involved in the intracellular response to cisplatin induced DNA damage., A dual-modal microscopy imaging strategy was developed to investigate in situ the interactions between transcription (co)factors with cisplatin damaged DNA in single cells, showing that cisplatin lesions disrupted the interactions of Smad3 with DNA.

Sulfide-based solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) matched with alloy anodes are considered as promising candidates for application in all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) to overcome the bottlenecks of the lithium (Li) anode. However, an understanding of the dynamic electrochemical processes on alloy anode in SSE is still elusive. Herein, in situ atomic force microscopy gives insights into the block-formation and stack-accumulation behaviors of Li precipitation on an Li electrode, uncovering the morphological evolution of nanoscale Li deposition/dissolution in ASSBs. Furthermore, two-dimensional Li-indium (In) alloy lamellae and the homogeneous solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) shell on the In electrode reveal the precipitation mechanism microscopically regulated by the alloy anode. The flexible and wrinkle-structure SEI shell further enables the electrode protection and inner Li accommodation upon cycles, elucidating the functional influences of SEI shell on the cycling behaviors. Such on-site tracking of the morphological evolution and dynamic mechanism provide an in-depth understanding and thus benefit the optimizations of alloy-based ASSBs.

Excessive oxidative stress in cancer cells can induce cancer cell death. Anticancer activity and drug resistance of chemotherapy are closely related to the redox state of tumor cells. Herein, five lipophilic Pt(IV) prodrugs were synthesized on the basis of the most widely used anticancer drug cisplatin, whose anticancer efficacy and drug resistance are closely related to the intracellular redox state. Subsequently, a series of cisplatin-sensitive and drug-resistant cell lines as well as three patient-derived primary ovarian cancer cells have been selected to screen those prodrugs. To verify if the disruption of redox balance can be combined with these Pt(IV) prodrugs, we then synthesized a polymer with a diselenium bond in the main chain for encapsulating the most effective prodrug to form nanoparticles (NP(Se)s). NP(Se)s can efficiently break the redox balance via simultaneously depleting GSH and augmenting ROS, thereby achieving a synergistic effect with cisplatin. In addition, genome-wide analysis via RNA-seq was employed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the changes in transcriptome and the alterations in redox-related pathways in cells treated with NP(Se)s and cisplatin. Thereafter, patient-derived xenograft models of hepatic carcinoma (PDXHCC) and multidrug-resistant lung cancer (PDXMDR) were established to evaluate the therapeutic effect of NP(Se)s, and a significant antitumor effect was achieved on both models with NP(Se)s. Overall, this study provides a promising strategy to break the redox balance for maximizing the efficacy of platinum-based cancer therapy.

In situ visualization of proteins of interest in single cells is attractive in cell biology, molecular biology, and biomedicine fields. Time-of-flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a powerful tool for imaging small organic molecules in single cells, yet difficult to image biomacromolecules such as proteins and DNA. Herein, a universal strategy is reported to image specific proteins in single cells by ToF-SIMS following genetic incorporation of fluorine-containing unnatural amino acids as a chemical tag into the proteins via a genetic code expansion technique. The method was developed and validated by imaging a green fluorescence protein (GFP) in Escherichia coli (E. coli) and human HeLa cancer cells and then utilized to visualize the characteristic polar distribution of chemotaxis protein CheA in E. coli cells and the interaction between high-mobility group box 1 protein and cisplatin-damaged DNA in HeLa cells. The present work highlights the power of ToF-SIMS imaging combined with genetically encoded chemical tags for in situ visualization of specific proteins as well as the interactions between proteins and drugs or drug-damaged DNA in single cells.

Photoactivatable diazidodihydroxido Pt(iv) complex trans,trans,trans-[Pt(N3)2(OH)2(py)2] (1; py = pyridine) is a promising anticancer agent which can be activated by visible light to induce cancer cell death. DNA has been thought to be involved in the mechanism of action of this kind of Pt(iv) prodrug. However, the detailed photodecomposition pathways of complex 1 and its interaction modes with DNA are complex. Herein we report that upon light irradiation complex 1 can bind to all four nucleosides covalently with the reduced Pt(ii) species. Moreover, apart from the covalent coordination, various oxidation adducts of these four nucleosides induced by the reactive oxidative species (ROS) generated during the photoactivation of the complex 1 have also been identified, especially the induced oxidation of adenosine and cytidine which was firstly reported for this kind of photoactivatable Pt(iv) prodrug. Such dual-action may contribute to the highly potent photo-antiproliferativity of complex 1 towards cancer cells, which may account for the unique mechanism of action of the photoactivatable diazido Pt(iv) anticancer complexes.

Organic ternary resistive random access memories (RRAMs) can dramatically increase information density, but the effective device yield remains too low for practical applications. Further improvements are inefficient as the switching mechanism is poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that quantized conduction occurs and is involved in the switching mechanism of organic ternary RRAMs. The conductance values in organic ternary RRAMs are quantified in units of the quantum conductance G0 but scaled by a factor β, in contrast to that of inorganic RRAMs without scaling. In situ elemental mapping reveals that evaporated Al diffuses into organic layers and causes the formation of quantum channels. The organic materials act as diodes to regulate the external voltage and contribute to β ≪ 1. A roughly positive correlation between the scale factor β and ternary device yield was found, which might provide a new way to improve the ternary device yield and will stimulate more material innovation for organic ternary RRAMs.

The aggregation of β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) is one potential cause for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Heparin can either promote or inhibit Aβ aggregation. The sulfation pattern and chain size determine its binding affinity and its role. Using 2D-NMR analysis and molecular modelling, the binding motif of heparin oligoaccharides to Aβ was determined to be HexA-GlcNS-IdoA2S-GlcNS6S. Iduronic acid epimerization and 6-O-sulfation are key factors for the binding affinity, while 3-O-sulfation of Arixtra (heparin pentasaccharide) is not involved in the binding to Aβ. Hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) was used to study the glycosaminoglycan (GAG)-peptide complex and identified V12HHQKL17 as the binding site of GAG at Aβ. Furthermore, an MTT assay was applied to evaluate the anti-Aβ fibril formation function of heparin tetrasaccharide, and indicated that the heparin tetrasaccharide with the defined sequence represents a promising inhibitor of Aβ aggregation.

Pyridostatin (PDS) is a well-known G-quadruplex (G4) inducer and stabilizer, yet its target genes have remained unclear. Herein, applying MS proteomics strategy, we revealed PDS significantly downregulated 22 proteins but upregulated 16 proteins in HeLa cancer cells, of which the genes both contain a number of G4 potential sequences, implying that PDS regulation on gene expression is far more complicated than inducing/stabilizing G4 structures. The PDS-downregulated proteins consequently upregulated 6 proteins to activate cyclin and cell cycle regulation, suggesting that PDS itself is not a potential anticancer agent, at least toward HeLa cancer cells. Importantly, SUB1, which encodes human positive cofactor and DNA lesion sensor PC4, was downregulated by 4.76-fold. Further studies demonstrated that the downregulation of PC4 dramatically promoted the cytotoxicity of trans-[PtCl2(NH3)(thiazole)] (trans-PtTz) toward HeLa cells to a similar level of cisplatin, contributable to retarding the repair of 1,3-trans-PtTz crosslinked DNA lesion mediated by PC4. These findings not only provide new insights into better understanding on the biological functions of PDS but also implicate a strategy for the rational design of novel multi-targeting platinum anticancer drugs via conjugation of PDS as a ligand to the coordination scaffold of transplatin for battling drug resistance to cisplatin.

Photoactivatable Pt(IV) anticancer prodrugs with the structure of [PtIV(N1)(N2)(L1)(L2)(A1)(A2)], where N1 and N2 are non-leaving nitrogen donor ligands, L1 and L2 are leaving ligands, and A1 and A2 are axial ligands, have attracted increasing attention due to their promising photo-cytotoxicity even to cisplatin-resistant cancer cells. These photochemotherapeutic prodrugs have high dark-stability under physiological conditions, while they can be activated by visible light restrained at the disease areas, as a consequence showing higher spatial and temporal controllability and much more safety than conventional chemotherapy. The coordinated ligands to the Pt center have been proved to be pivotal in determining the function and activity of the photoactivatable Pt(IV) prodrugs. In this review, we will focus on the development of the coordinated ligands in such Pt(IV) prodrugs and discuss the effects of diverse ligands on their photochemistry and photoactivity as well as the future evolution directions of the ligands. We hope this review can help to facilitate the design and development of novel photoactivatable Pt(IV) anticancer prodrugs.

Synthesis of large-scale single-crystalline graphene monolayers without multilayers involves the fabrication of proper single-crystalline substrates and the ubiquitous formation of multilayered graphene islands during chemical vapor deposition. Here, a method of cyclic electrochemical polishing combined with thermal annealing, which allows the conversion of commercial polycrystalline Cu foils to single-crystal Cu(111) with an almost 100% yield, is presented. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) measurement of the pure monolayer graphene film shows a high average sheet conductivity of 2.8 mS and mean carrier mobility of 6903 cm2 V−1 s−1 over a large area. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the selective etching is induced by the much easier diffusion of hydrogen atoms than hydrocarbon radicals across the edges of the top graphene layer, and the simulated selective etching processes based on phase field modeling are well consistent with experimental observations. This work provides new ways toward the production of single-crystal Cu(111) and the synthesis of pure monolayer graphene with high electronic quality.

Solid-state Li-metal batteries offer a great opportunity for high-security and high-energy-density energy storage systems. However, redundant interfacial modification layers, intended to lead to an overall satisfactory interfacial stability, dramatically debase the actual energy density. Herein, a dual-interface amorphous cathode electrolyte interphase/solid electrolyte interphase CEI/SEI protection (DACP) strategy is proposed to conquer the main challenges of electrochemical side reactions and Li dendrites in hybrid solid-liquid batteries without sacrificing energy density via LiDFOB and LiBF4 in situ synergistic conversion. The amorphous CEI/SEI products have an ultralow mass proportion and act as a dynamic shield to cooperatively enforce dual electrodes with a well-preserved structure. Thus, this in situ DACP layer subtly reconciles multiple interfacial compatibilities and a high energy density, endowing the hybrid solid-liquid Li-metal battery with a sustainably brilliant cycling stability even at practical conditions, including high cathode loading, high voltage (4.5 V), and high temperature (45 °C) conditions, and enables a high-energy-density (456 Wh kg-1) pouch cell (11.2 Ah, 5 mA h cm-2) with a lean electrolyte (0.92 g Ah-1, containing solid and liquid phases). The compatible modification strategy points out a promising approach for the design of practical interfaces in future solid-state battery systems.

In order to more effectively mine the structural features in time series, while simplifying the complexity of time series analysis, equiprobable symbolization pattern entropy (EPSPE) based on time series symbolization combined with sliding window technology is proposed in this paper. Firstly, time series are implemented symbolic procession according to the equal probability distribution of the original data, which greatly simplifies the difficulty of analyzing the signal on the premise of small loss of precision to the original signal. Then, sliding window technique is used to obtain a finite number of different symbolic patterns, and the pattern pairs are determined by calculating the conversion between the symbolic patterns. Next, the conversion frequency between symbolized patterns is counted to calculate the probability of the pattern pairs, thus estimating the complexity measurement of complex signals. The results of test using the Logistic system with different parameters show that compared with multiscale sample entropy(MSE), EPSPE can more concisely and intuitively reflect the structural characteristics of time series. Finally, EPSPE is used to investigate the natural wind field signals collected at an outdoor space in which nine high precision two-dimensional (2D) ultrasonic anemometers are deployed in line with 1m interval. The values of EPSPE show consistent increase or decrease trend with the spatial regular arrangement of the nine anemometers. While the results of MSE are irregular, and cannot accurately predict the spatial deployment relationship of nine 2D ultrasonic anemometers.
