Abstract

International audience; The deployment of heterogeneous radio networks and the deployment of Unicast Internet Protocol IP/Multicast IP architectures can impact the quality of services received by the users. The authors think that they will accept these quality variations if they have the possibility to choose the radio network and the transmission mode, multicast versus unicast. But, when choosing a radio network or a transmission mode, the choices of the users can be opposed to the choices of the operators managing the networks. To overcome this drawback, the authors defined a method allowing the users, the operators managing the networks and the service providers to cooperate in the selection process.

Abstract

International audience; BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To produce up-to-date clinical practice guidelines on the prevention of venous thromboembolism in surgery and obstetrics. METHODS: A Steering Committee defined the scope of the topic, the questions to be answered, and the assessment criteria. Eight multidisciplinary working groups (total of 70 experts) performed a critical appraisal of the literature in the following disciplines: pharmacology of antithrombotic agents, orthopaedics; general surgery (gastrointestinal (GI) and varicose vein surgery); urology; gynaecology and obstetrics; thoracic, cardiac and vascular surgery; surgery of the head, neck and spine; and surgery of burns patients. The resultant reports and guidelines were submitted for comment and completion of the Appraisal of Guidelines Research & Evaluation questionnaire to a total of 150 peer reviewers, before producing definite guidelines. RESULTS: The report answers the following questions for each type of surgery: (i) What is the venous thromboembolism incidence according to clinical and/or paraclinical criteria in the absence of prophylaxis? (with stratification of venous thromboembolism risk into low, moderate and high categories); (ii) What is the efficacy and safety of the prophylactic measures used? (iii) When should prophylaxis be introduced and how long should it last? (iv) Does ambulatory surgery affect efficacy and safety of prophylaxis? CONCLUSIONS: Apart from answering the above questions, the guidelines provide a summary table for each discipline. This table stratifies types of surgery into the three risk categories, specifies the recommended prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism (pharmacological and/or mechanical) and grades each recommendation. In addition, whenever appropriate, the recommended prophylaxis is adjusted to low- and high-risk patients.

Abstract

International audience; Our goal is to automatically identify faces in TV broadcast without a pre-defined dictionary of identities. Most methods are based on identity detection (from OCR and ASR) and require a propagation strategy based on visual clustering. In TV content, people appear with many variations making the clustering difficult. In this case, speaker clustering can be a reliable link for face clustering. Multi-modal clustering methods assume a bipartite mapping between modalities. In this paper, we propose to build automatically an incomplete speaker-face mapping based on local evidence of OCR and Lip activity links. Then, we propose schemes of speaker constraints propagation to the face constrained-clustering problem. Experiments performed on the REPERE corpus show an improvement of face identification by propagating names to face clusters (+3.7% F-measure compared to the baseline).

Abstract

International audience; Continuous advances in processor and ASIC technologies enable the integration of more and more complex embedded systems. Embedded systems have become commonplace in recent years. Since their implementations generally require the use of heterogeneous resources (e.g., processor cores, ASICs) in one system with hard design constraints, the importance of hardware/software codesign methodologies increases steadily. HW/SW codesign approaches consist generally of HW/SW partitioning and scheduling, constrained code generation, and hardware and interface synthesis. This article presents the codesign of an industrial experiment in acoustic echo cancellation (GMDF&agr; algorithm); and emphasizes the partitioning and communication synthesis steps. This experiment brings to light interesting problems such as data and program distribution between system memories and the modeling of communications in the partitioning process

Abstract

This paper presents TSRuleGrowth, an algorithm for mining partially-ordered rules on a time series. TSRuleGrowth takes principles from the state of the art of transactional rule mining, and applies them to time series. It proposes a new definition of the support, which overcomes the limitations of previous definitions. Experiments on two databases of real data coming from connected environments show that this algorithm extracts relevant usual situations and outperforms the state of the art.

Abstract

A model of cellular networks where the base station locations constitute a Poisson point process and each base station is equipped with three sectorial antennas is proposed. This model permits studying the spatial distribution of the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) in the downlink. In particular, this distribution is shown to be insensitive to the distribution of antenna azimuths. Moreover, the effect of horizontal sectorization is shown to be equivalent to that of shadowing. Assuming ideal vertical antenna pattern, an explicit expression of the Laplace transform of the inverse of SINR is given. The model is validated by comparing its results to measurements in an operational network. It is observed numerically that, in the case of dense urban regions where interference is preponderant, one may neglect the effect of the vertical sectorization when calculating the distribution of the SINR, which provides considerable tractability. Combined with queuing theory results, the SINR’s distribution permits to express the user’s quality of service as function of the traffic demand. This permits in particular to operators to predict the required investments to face the continual increase of traffic demand.

Abstract

This paper studies the time and space mapping of the electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure induced by cellular base station antennas (BSA) using artificial neural networks (ANN). The reconstructed EMF exposure map (EEM) in urban environment is obtained by using data from EMF sensor networks, drive testing and information accessible in a public database, e.g., locations and orientations of BSA. The performance of EEM is compared with Exposure Reference Map (ERM) based on simulations, in which parametric path loss models are used to reflect the complexity of urban cities. Then, a new hybrid ANN, which has the advantage of sorting and utilizing inputs from simulations efficiently, is proposed. Using both hybrid ANN and conventional regression ANN, the EEM is reconstructed and compared to the ERM first by the reconstruction approach considering only EMF exposure assessed from sensor networks, where the required number of sensors towards good reconstruction is explored, then, a new reconstruction approach using the sensors information combined with EMF along few streets from drive testing. Both reconstruction approaches use simulations to mimic measurements. The influence of city architecture on EMF exposure reconstruction is analyzed and the addition of noise is considered to test the robustness of ANN as well.

This article presents an automatic frame analysis system evaluated on a corpus of French encyclopedic history texts annotated according to the FrameNet formalism. The chosen approach relies on an integrated sequence labeling model which jointly optimizes frame identification and semantic role segmentation and identification. Abstract

We study congestion periods in a finite fluid buffer when the net input rate depends upon a recurrent Markov process; congestion occurs when the buffer content is equal to the buffer capacity. Similarly to O'Reilly and Palmowski (2013), we consider the duration of congestion periods as well as the associated volume of lost information. While these quantities are characterized by their Laplace transforms in that paper, we presently derive their distributions in a typical stationary busy period of the buffer. Our goal is to compute the exact expression of the loss probability in the system, which is usually approximated by the probability that the occupancy of the infinite buffer is greater than the buffer capacity under consideration. Moreover, by using general results of the theory of Markovian arrival processes, we show that the duration of congestion and the volume of lost information have phase-type distributions.

Abstract

International audience; This paper studies the design and application of a novel visual attention model designed to compute user's gaze position automatically, i.e., without using a gaze-tracking system. The model we propose is specifically designed for real-time first-person exploration of 3D virtual environments. It is the first model adapted to this context which can compute in real time a continuous gaze point position instead of a set of 3D objects potentially observed by the user. To do so, contrary to previous models which use a mesh-based representation of visual objects, we introduce a representation based on surface-elements. Our model also simulates visual reflexes and the cognitive processes which take place in the brain such as the gaze behavior associated to first-person navigation in the virtual environment. Our visual attention model combines both bottom-up and top-down components to compute a continuous gaze point position on screen that hopefully matches the user's one. We conducted an experiment to study and compare the performance of our method with a state-of-the-art approach. Our results are found significantly better with sometimes more than 100 percent of accuracy gained. This suggests that computing a gaze point in a 3D virtual environment in real time is possible and is a valid approach, compared to object-based approaches. Finally, we expose different applications of our model when exploring virtual environments. We present different algorithms which can improve or adapt the visual feedback of virtual environments based on gaze information. We first propose a level-of-detail approach that heavily relies on multiple-texture sampling. We show that it is possible to use the gaze information of our visual attention model to increase visual quality where the user is looking, while maintaining a high-refresh rate. Second, we introduce the use of the visual attention model in three visual effects inspired by the human visual system namely: depth-of-field blur, camera- motions, and dynamic luminance. All these effects are computed based on the simulated gaze of the user, and are meant to improve user's sensations in future virtual reality applications.

Abstract

International audience; Our objective is to analyze the impact of fading and opportunistic scheduling on the quality of service perceived by the users in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) cellular network. To this end, assuming Markovian arrivals and departures of customers that transmit some given data volumes, as well as some temporal channel variability (fading), we study the mean throughput that the network offers to users in the long run of the system. Explicit formulas are obtained in the case of allocation policies, which may or may-not take advantage of the fading, called respectively opportunistic and non-opportunistic. The main practical results of the present work are the following. Firstly we evaluate for the non-opportunist allocation the degradation due to fading compared to Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) (that is, a decrease of at least 13% of the throughput). Secondly, we evaluate the gain induced by the opportunistic allocation. In particular, when the traffic demand per cell exceeds some value (about 2 Mbits/s in our numerical example), the gain induced by opportunism compensates the degradation induced by fading compared to AWGN.

Abstract

International audience; Automated composition of Web services or the process of forming new value-added Web services is one of the most promising challenges facing the Semantic Web today. Semantics enables Web service to describe capabilities together with their processes, hence one of the key elements for the automated composition of Web services. In this paper, we focus on the functional level of Web services i.e. services are described according to some input, output parameters semantically enhanced by concepts in a domain ontology. Web service composition is then viewed as a composition of semantic links wherein the latter links refer to semantic matchmaking between Web service parameters (i.e. outputs and inputs) in order to model their connection and interaction. The key idea is that the matchmaking enables, at run time, finding semantic compatibilities among independently defined Web service descriptions. By considering such a level of composition, a formal model to perform the automated composition of Web services i.e. Semantic Link Matrix, is introduced. The latter model is required as a starting point to apply problem-solving techniques such as regression (or progression)-based search for Web service composition. The model supports a semantic context in order to find correct, complete, consistent and robust plans as solutions. In this paper, an innovative and formal model for an AI (Artificial Intelligence) planning-oriented composition is presented. Our system is implemented and interacting with Web services which are dedicated to Telecom scenarios. International audience; We investigate in this paper the performance of a simple file sharing principle. For this purpose, we consider a system composed of N peers becoming active at exponential random times; the system is initiated with only one server offering the desired file and the other peers after becoming active try to download it. Once the file has been downloaded by a peer, this one immediately becomes a server. To investigate the transient behavior of this file sharing system, we study the instant when the system shifts from a congested state where all servers available are saturated by incoming demands to a state where a growing number of servers are idle. In spite of its apparent simplicity, this queueing model (with a random number of servers) turns out to be quite difficult to analyze. A formulation in terms of an urn and ball model is proposed and corresponding scaling results are derived. These asymptotic results are then compared against simulations.

15. An approach to robust network design in telecommunications

Abstract

International audience; In telecommunications network design, one of the most frequent problems is to adjust the capacity on the links of the network in order to satisfy a set of requirements. In the past, these requirements were demands based on historical data and/or demographic predictions. Nowadays, because of new technology development and customer movement due to competitiveness, the demands present considerable variability. Thus, network robustness w.r.t demand uncertainty is now regarded as a major consideration. In this work, we propose a min-max-min formulation and a methodology to cope with this uncertainty. We model the uncertainty as the convex hull of certain scenarios and show that cutting plane methods can be applied to solve the underlying problems. We will compare Kelley, Elzinga-Moore and bundle methods.

Abstract

This work presents a 14-band low-complexity and high-performance synthesizer architecture for multiband orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing operating in the range of 3.1 to 10.6 GHz. The synthesizer uses a single phase-locked loop with trivial divide-by-2 circuits, single side band mixers, low-complexity filters, and multiplexers. Specifications of the synthesizer components are chosen in order to minimize the total spurs power and respect the IEEE802.15.3a recommendations.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we study different options for the survivability implementation in MPLS over Optical Transport Networks (OTN) in terms of network resource usage and configuration cost. We investigate two approaches to the survivability deployment: single layer and multilayer survivability and present various methods for spare capacity allocation (SCA) to reroute disrupted traffic. The comparative analysis shows the influence of the offered traffic granularity and the physical network structure on the survivability cost: for high bandwidth LSPs, close to the optical channel capacity, the multilayer survivability outperforms the single layer one, whereas for low bandwidth LSPs the single layer survivability is more cost-efficient. On the other hand, sparse networks of low connectivity parameter use more wavelengths for optical path routing and increase the configuration cost, as compared with dense networks. We demonstrate that by mapping efficiently the spare capacity of the MPLS layer onto the resources of the optical layer one can achieve up to 22% savings in the total configuration cost and up to 37% in the optical layer cost. Further savings (up to 9 %) in the wavelength use can be obtained with the integrated approach to network configuration over the sequential one, however, at the increase in the optimization problem complexity. These results are based on a cost model with different cost variations, and were obtained for networks targeted to a nationwide coverage.

Abstract

International audience; This article proposes an automatic characterization method by comparing unknown images with examples more or less known. Our approach allows to use uncertain examples but easy to obtain (e.g. by automatic retrieval on the Internet). The use of fuzzy logic and adaptive clustering makes it possible to reduce automatically the noise from this database by preserving only the examples having a strong level of redundancy in the dominant shapes. To validate this method, we compared our artificial process of recognition with the estimation of human operators. The tests show that the automatic process gives an average accuracy of the characterization near to 95%.

In this paper we review classification algorithms used to design brain-computer interface (BCI) systems based on electroencephalography (EEG). We briefly present the commonly employed algorithms and describe their critical properties. Based on the literature, we compare them in terms of performance and provide guidelines to choose the suitable classification algorithm(s) for a specific BCI.

Abstract

International audience; BACKGROUND: Chromosomal rearrangements, arising from unequal recombination between repeated sequences, are found in a subset of patients with autism. Duplications involving loci associated with behavioural disturbances constitute an especially good candidate mechanism. The Williams-Beuren critical region (WBCR), located at 7q11.23, is commonly deleted in Williams-Beuren microdeletion syndrome (WBS). However, only four patients with a duplication of the WBCR have been reported to date: one with severe language delay and the three others with variable developmental, psychomotor and language delay. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: In this study, we screened 206 patients with autism spectrum disorders for the WBCR duplication by quantitative microsatellite analysis and multiple ligation-dependent probe amplification. RESULTS: We identified one male patient with a de novo interstitial duplication of the entire WBCR of paternal origin. The patient had autistic disorder, severe language delay and mental retardation, with very mild dysmorphic features. CONCLUSION: We report the first patient with autistic disorder and a WBCR duplication. This observation indicates that the 7q11.23 duplication could be involved in complex clinical phenotypes, ranging from developmental or language delay to mental retardation and autism, and extends the phenotype initially reported. These findings also support the existence of one or several genes in 7q11.23 sensitive to gene dosage and involved in the development of language and social interaction.

The development of two-dimensional chemically assisted ion beam etching model of GaAs by Cl2∕Ar+ allowed the authors to analyze the role of some critical parameters of etch process on the morphology of trench and mesa structures. Abstract

In this paper, an uniplanar log-periodic antenna with a perpendicular plane reflector dedicated to a radio wave camera system is presented. The performance of this antenna are investigated over a wide frequency range, comparing between measured and simulated results. The measured return loss of the antenna exhibits a wideband performance between 1.5 and 4GHz (@VSWR=2). The proposed antenna has a good symmetrical radiation pattern in the E- and H-planes. This antenna configuration is suitable particularly for broadband phased antenna arrays where active circuits are integrated on the feed substrate. The developed antenna will be exploited in a future context of an ultra wideband antenna array, with performances in radiation independent from frequency, for a radio wave camera system.

Abstract

The ever-rising diffusion of cellular phones has brought about an increased concern for the possible consequences of electromagnetic radiation on human health. Possible thermal effects have been investigated, via experimentation or simulation, by several research projects in the last decade. Concerning numerical modeling, the power absorption in a user's head is generally computed using discretized models built from clinical MRI data. The vast majority of such numerical studies have been conducted using Finite Differences Time Domain methods, although strong limitations of their accuracy are due to heterogeneity, poor definition of the detailed structures of head tissues (staircasing effects), etc. In order to propose numerical modeling using Finite Element or Discontinuous Galerkin Time Domain methods, reliable automated tools for the unstructured discretization of human heads are also needed. Results presented in this article aim at filling the gap between human head MRI images and the accurate numerical modeling of wave propagation in biological tissues and its thermal effects. International audience; — This paper investigates the human exposure to radio frequency radiations expected from future connected objects. The paper focuses on small objects of around ten centimeters. The study takes into account very recent advances on the design of compact antenna arrays. The specificities of the physical layer of wireless communication standards such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex waveform and Multiple Input Multiple Output techniques are also taken into account. The Specific Absorption Rate is measured for an object using time reversal based spatial focusing (or equivalently Maximum Ratio Transmission beamforming) as a multi-antenna technique and 8 port micro-structured antennas or 8 port patch antennas as compact antenna solutions.

Abstract

Real-life ants use pheromone trails to guide themselves back and forth from food, without the help of a map. In this paper, we introduce a new protocol for wireless networks, called Time Reversal for Ant Trails (TRAT) which mimics ants by using electromagnetic virtual beacons generated by Time Reversal focusing instead of pheromones. Simulations show that for a given trajectory, the performance of the proposed scheme increases with the number of transmit antennas at the network side, with the precision of the scanning, and decreases with inter-beacon spacing and the carrier frequency.

Abstract

During the years 1993–1994, a continuous campaign of measurements has been held in the frame of the International Equatorial Electrojet Year (IEEY) with a network of 10 magneto-telluric stations and a network of three ionosondes. Other instruments have participated during shorter periods, HF radar and optical Fabry-Perot 630 nm interferometer. After the IEEY campaigns, the International Group of Research in Geophysics in Europe Africa (IGRGEA created in January 1995), has organized the research in geophysics. This paper report the main results of the IGRGEA during the last decade at local, regional and planetary scales. At a local scale, the HF radar data highlighted the complex structure of echoes in the equatorial zone and allowed to explain the “necklace” echoes as due to oblique propagation into the type I instability levels. This radar observed atmospheric storm electric field discharges at Es layer for the daytime and Equatorial Spread F at night-time. A series of original results concern Doppler spectra and the electric field change on plasma drifts across the ionosphere, gravity waves effects as well the ESF multi-process sources. At a regional scale, magnetic data were used to parametrize the Equatorial Electrojet (EEJ). Ionospheric data, magnetic data and UARS satellite were brought together as input parameters of the Richmond's EEJ model to reproduce the EEJ and the magnetic field variations associated to EEJ. The comparisons between magnetic data, and the magnetic field computed from the physical model and from the parametrization of the EEJ are all in good agreement. Ionosonde data were included in the IRI. Ionosonde data revealed the field aligned f 0 F 2 crests of ionization at mid morning and early afternoon hours. Measurements of equatorial night-time wind variations, obtained for the first time over African equatorial zone with the Fabry-Perot interferometer, shown the strong variability of atmospheric winds. At a planetary scale, the parametrization of the EEJ was done using the magnetometers chain involved during IEEY in the three longitude sectors. Finally, we present the results on electrodynamic coupling between high and low latitudes with overshielding or shielding events.

Abstract

Le télétravail est souvent considéré comme un moyen d’améliorer l’articulation entre vie professionnelle et vie privée. Toutefois, pourquoi certains salariés, et singulièrement des cadres, en viennent-ils à choisir cette modalité ? S’agit-il d’ailleurs bien d’un choix ou de l’adoption d’une solution « faute de mieux », dans un contexte organisationnel contraignant ? Et dans ce cas, à quels arbitrages temporels procèdent-ils ? Par ailleurs, dès lors qu’ils ont opté pour le télétravail, comment les cadres parviennent-ils à accommoder les contraintes professionnelles et familiales ? Leurs aspirations à une meilleure conciliation sont-elles satisfaites ou rencontrent-ils des difficultés insoupçonnées ? Le présent article apporte des réponses à ces différentes questions, en s’appuyant sur deux études menées auprès de cadres pratiquant différentes formes de télétravail. Il souligne, finalement, que l’absence d’une régulation institutionnelle de l’articulation entre vies privée et professionnelle, loin d’assurer une existence plus équilibrée, présente des risques sur l’efficacité collective. Telework is often considered to be a means for making life at work and at home more compatible. Why do some wage-earners, in particular white-collar employees, choose it? Do they actually make a choice or simply adopt a solution “for want of anything better” in an organisational context with its limitations? In this case, what factors do they weigh against each other? Once they have opted for telework, how do these white collars manage to adjust their occupational and family lives? Is their aspiration to improve the balance between the two satisfied? Or do they run up against unexpected difficulties? Answers to these questions come out of two studies conducted among white-collar employees in different sorts of telework. Given the absence of institutional regulations governing the relation between life at home and at work, telework, far from leading to a more balanced life, jeopardizes the organisation’s collective efficiency.

Abstract

International audience; A reef called ''Les Hermelles'' occurs in the intertidal zone of the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel (Normandy, France). The reef is composed of the sea-worm Sabellaria alveolata and thus, is one of the northernmost biological reefs in the world. To map Les Hermelles in the field is difficult because of its great distance from the coastline and its brief exposure to the air. Consequently, the last map dates back to 1980. In 1984, mussel farms were developed around the reef. Since then, they are often regarded as the factor responsible for the perceived decline of the reef. The main goal of the study was to assess the possibility of mapping Les Hermelles using satellite imagery and if so, to give a rough idea about its recent evolution since the 1980 map. A multi-spectral SPOT image satellite was used for the tests. Areas of reef, sand, silt, mud and seawater show similar spectral signatures. Moreover, these environments are often mixed within a single pixel. Consequently visual interpretation and the usual classification approaches failed, showing inter-class confusion. A new classification based on cellular automata appears to be promising. Applied to the example of Les Hermelles, this method was successful and showed a certain stability of the reef dynamic tendencies since 1980. Although the preliminary results have to be securely based on field data acquired close to the satellite-image date, they already confirm the key role that sandbars play in the reef dynamics whereas the role of the mussel farms remains unclear if not null. The classification by cellular automata presents the advantage that no supervision is required, and that spectral and geographical information are both used together.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents an original solution to the camera control problem in a virtual environment. Our objective is to present a general framework that allows the automatic control of a camera in a dynamic environment. The proposed method is based on the image-based control or visual servoing approach. It consists in positioning a camera according to the information perceived in the image. This is thus a very intuitive approach of animation. To be able to react automatically to modifications of the environment, we also considered the introduction of constraints into the control. This approach is thus adapted to highly reactive contexts (virtual reality, video games). Numerous examples dealing with classic problems in animation are considered within this framework and presented in this paper.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we model the random multiuser multi-channel access network by using the occupancy problem from probability theory, and we combine this with a network interference model in order to derive the achievable throughput capacity of such networks. Furthermore, we compare the random multi-channel access with a cognitive radio system in which the users are able to minimize the channels occupancy. Besides, we show that the sampling rate can be reduced under the Nyquist rate if the use of the spectrum resource is known at the gateway side. This scenario is referred as "cognitive radio" context. The mathematical developments and results are illustrated through various simulations results. The proposed model is particularly relevant in analyzing the performance of networks where the users are not synchronized neither in time nor in frequency as it is often the case in various Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we present a simple model for satellite constellations with polar orbits and inter-satellite links. This model is used to propose and study two algorithms for routing and re-routing communications, which aim at improving the quality of service for long communications. In order to study these algorithms, we have developed a satellite constellation simulator. Some of its results are presented.; Après avoir présenté un modèle de constellation de satellites à orbites polaires et liens intersatellites, nous proposons et étudions deux algorithmes de routage et de reroutage de communications. Ces algorithmes visent à améliorer la qualité de service des communications de longue durée. Pour l’étude de ces algorithmes, nous développons un simulateur de constellation de satellites dont nous présentons quelques résultats.

Abstract

International audience; The IEEE 802.11v defines the Directed Multicast Service (DMS) in order to enhance the reliability of the multicast transport. This service converts multicast traffic into several unicast streams. Therefore DMS can be used to serve a limited number of receivers. In this paper, we show that using DMS, losses caused by queue rejections may exceed the packet loss rate of the legacy multicast. To resolve the limited scalability of DMS, we define a new scalable version called S-DMS. This version is appropriate for layered streams like H264/SVC and is able to avoid queue overflows. S-DMS delivers the base layer of a video traffic using DMS and transmits the enhancement layer using either DMS or the legacy multicast, depending on the available bandwidth. We show that S-DMS is able to increase considerably the number of admitted multicast members.

Abstract

Research Session 3 - Application Modeling and Management; International audience; The ability to react quickly to unpredictable changes in the environment is a key requirement in pervasive computing. This paper presents fANFARE, a framework for the autonomic management of service-oriented applications in pervasive environments. Specifically, it focuses on the configuration and optimization of pervasive applications deployed on OSGi platforms. We propose to handle runtime administration through a hierarchy of autonomic managers, that is a platform manager and a number of application managers and dependency managers. Our approach has been implemented and validated on pervasive use cases within the MEDICAL project funded by the French Ministry of Industry.

Abstract

International audience; One of the major issues experienced by the IEEE 802.11 standard is the fair sharing of the channel between unicast and multicast flows. This problem is obviously caused by the use of the smallest Contention Window size to transmit the multicast packets compared to an exponentially incremented size for every unicast packet transmission retry. This pattern is due mainly to the reliability degree difference between the unicast and the multicast traffic. Currently, the unicast uses feedbacks to provide reliability, whereas the multicast does not rely on such a mechanism and is therefore considered as unreliable. In this paper we propose a reliable Multicast flow transport proposal called the Reliable PLCP-based Multicast Protocol (RPMP) and we study its impact on the fair channel sharing with unicast flows in high-load conditions. We show that RPMP solves the issues of the legacy multicast.

Abstract

This paper deals with embedded systems software and the modification of its architecture and behavior at execution-time. Incautious implementation of these features demands both heavy memory and performance overrun. To accomplish such software evolution activities in resource-constrained embedded systems, we propose a component-based run-time evolution infrastructure that reconciles richness of evolution alternatives and performance requirements. Our proposal is based on off-site components reifications, which are representations of components that allow us to treat evolution concerns remotely. Hence, the workload to be processed by the embedded device is alleviated. Memory and processor-time resources consumption evaluation on a real-world scenario show the efficiency and pertinence of our approach.

Abstract

In this paper we present our approach to cope with platforms' heterogeneity of the home network. Traditional resource reservation policies, based on a mapping table, associate one Quantity of Resource (QoR) to one platform resulting in large table size. To reduce this size, we propose to use aggregated mapping tables to associate one aggregated QoR to several platforms. This reduction facilitates resources management for multimedia applications in home networks. This paper presents the aggregation algorithm which automatically builds aggregated mapping tables, with input criteria given by content providers. The algorithm uses clustering coupled with domain knowledge. It is evaluated with randomly generated mapping tables.

Abstract

Multi-user interference is a major issue for non coherent ultra wide band impluse radio (UWB-IR)systems, since the commonly used energy integration prevents from distinguish useful and spurious impulses in teh received signal. We propose a short integration based and multipath capable non coherent receiver, relying on a comparator. The decisions taken on the multipaths are combined and weighted by their reliability. Under interference situations, the coeffecient of the interfered paths are updated to marginalize their impact in the combination process. Simulations show the relevance of such a proposition and also exhibit that a simple elimination of the interfered paths can provide satisfactory performance.

Print ISBN: 978-1-4200-7775-9; In this chapter, the competitive interaction of radio devices dynamically accessing the spectrum is studied using tools from game theory. Depending on the scenario under consid- eration, the dynamic spectrum access (DSA) is modeled by different types of games following both a non-cooperative and a cooperative approach. In the first case, each radio device aims to selfishly maximize an individual performance metric (e.g., individual data rate), while in the second case such maximization concerns global network parameters (e.g., network sum-rate). In each case, we analyze network equilibria, which allow network designers, oper- ators, or manufactures to predict the behavior and performance of cognitive networks and/or terminals.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we propose an identification of morphological factors that may impact the Whole Body Specific Absorption Rate (WBSAR). The study is conducted for the case of an exposure to a front plane wave at the 2100MHz frequency carrier. This study is based on the development of different regression models for estimating the WBSAR as a function of morphological factors morphology. For this manner, a database of twelve anatomical human models (phantoms) has been considered. Also, eighteen supplementary phantoms obtained using morphing technique were generated to build the requested relation. The paper presents three models based on external morphological factors like the Body Surface Area (BSA), the Body Mass Index (BMI) or the body mass. These models show good results for families obtained by morphing technique on the estimation of the WBSAR (< 10%) but still less accurate (30%) when applied for different original phantoms. This study stresses the importance of the internal morphological factors such as muscle and fat proportions in the characterization of the WBSAR. The regression models are then improved using internal morphological factors with an estimation error around 10% on the WBSAR. Finally, this study is suited for establishing the statistical distribution of the WBSAR for a given population characterized by its morphology.

Abstract

IETF ROLL has recently proposed gradient routing as a fundamental building block for data collection in Wireless Sensor Networks. This paper seconds this choice by presenting an implementation of gradient routing on current hardware, and by showing experimentally that gradient routing is robust against topological changes. To stress its self-healing quality, we design and implement a complete communication stack in which neighbor tables are built in a purely reactive fashion. We quantify the resulting topological changes, and show how gradient routing elegantly handles these dynamics. This paper presents, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental study on gradient routing as advocated by IETF ROLL.

Abstract

International audience; We study the network spectral efficiency of decentralized vector multiple access channels (MACs) when the number of accessible dimensions per transmitter is strategically limited. Considering each dimension as a frequency band, we call this limiting process bandwidth limiting (BL). Assuming that each transmitter maximizes its own data rate by water-filling over the available frequency bands, we consider two scenarios. In the first scenario, transmitters use non-intersecting sets of bands (spectral resource partition), and in the second one, they freely exploit all the available frequency bands (spectral resource sharing). In the latter case, successive interference cancelation (SIC) is used. We show the existence of an optimal number of dimensions that a transmitter must use in order to maximize the network performance measured in terms of spectral efficiency. We provide a closed form expression for the optimal number of accessible bands in the first scenario. Such an optimum point, depends on the number of active transmitters, the number of available frequency bands and the different signal-to-noise ratios. In the second scenario, we show that BL does not bring a significant improvement on the network spectral efficiency, when all transmitters use the same BL policy. For both scenarios, we provide simulation results to validate our conclusions.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we propose the following approach to the dimensioning of the radio part of the downlink in OFDMA networks. First, we use information theory to characterize the bit-rate in the channel from a base station to its mobile. It depends on the power and bandwidth allocated to this mobile. Then, we describe the resource (power and bandwidth) allocation problem and characterise feasible configurations of bit-rates of all users. As the key element, we propose some particular sufficient condition (in a multi-Erlang form) for a given configuration of bit-rates to be feasible. Finally, we consider an Erlang's loss model, in which streaming arrivals whose admission would lead to the violation of this sufficient condition are blocked and lost. In this model, the blocking probabilities can be calculated using Kaufman-Roberts algorithm. We propose it to evaluate the minimal density of base stations assuring acceptable blocking probabilities for a streaming traffic of a given load per surface unit. We validate this approach by comparison of the blocking probabilities to these simulated in the similar model in which the admission control is based on the original feasibility property (instead of its sufficient condition). Our sufficient bit-rate feasibility condition can also be used to dimension the network with respect to the elastic traffic.

Abstract

International audience; There is an increasing user demand for video streaming service. This represents a major challenge for both operators and content providers. Besides maximizing the user satisfaction, they also have other objectives, such as optimizing the network resources utilization or balancing load between the content sources. In order to deal with this multi-objective problem we propose the association of two algorithms. The first one analyzes the environment and deduces the best long-term adaptation strategy. If this algorithm fails to maximize the user satisfaction, then the second one reacts and temporarily adapts the video streaming. A mapping of these algorithms in the IMS architecture is finally discussed.

International audience; Providing QoS for nomadic hosts remains a critical issue since new emerging wireless technologies may present different behaviours in terms of QoS, security or cost. Within this heterogeneous environment, especially if a handover occurs, keeping the same QoS level for one application may require some methods to negotiate the QoS provided in each network. In this paper, we propose to adopt a proactive and dynamic negotiation approach coupled with the handover decision algorithm implemented in [1]. Abstract

In this contribution we present a decentralized power allocation algorithm for the uplink interleave division multiple access (IDMA) channel. Within the proposed optimal strategy for power allocation, each user aims at selfishly maximizing its own utility function. An iterative chip by chip (CBC) decoder at the receiver and a rational selfish behavior of all the users according to a classical game-theoretical framework are the underlying assumptions of this work. This approach leads to a power allocation based on a channel inversion policy where the optimal power level is set locally at each terminal based on the knowledge of its own channel realization, the noise level at the receiver and the number of active users in the network., Comment: To appear in IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC 2008)

Abstract

We present two interference alignment techniques such that an opportunistic point-to-point multiple input multiple output (MIMO) link can reuse, without generating any additional interference, the same frequency band of a similar pre-existing primary link. In this scenario, we exploit the fact that under power constraints, although each radio maximizes independently its rate by water-filling on their channel transfer matrix singular values, frequently, not all of them are used. Therefore, by aligning the interference of the opportunistic radio it is possible to transmit at a significant rate while insuring zero-interference on the pre-existing link. We propose a linear pre-coder for a perfect interference alignment and a power allocation scheme which maximizes the individual data rate of the secondary link. Our numerical results show that significant data rates are achieved even for a reduced number of antennas., Comment: To appear in proc.
