2. Investigating the Strength of the Indian Monsoons during Climate Extremes with Stable Isotope Records in Corals

The Indian monsoon affects the lives of over a billion inhabitants living in southern Asia via the hy-drological cycle. Agriculture on land and freshwater discharge into the ocean. This discharge and nutri-ent cycling are tied with the monsoon cycles that di-rectly impact society and the economy. Previous studies have demonstrated a strong connection be-tween the strength of the Indian monsoon and the cooling of the North Atlantic during climate ex-tremes, such as during the last glacial period 20,000 years ago, and the Little Ice Age (~1300-1870 A.D.). In our study, we compare the relative strength of the monsoon during two different climate states: the Lit-tle Ice Age (LIA) and the modern (2015) with proxy measurements obtained in surface corals from Saint Martin’s Island, Southeast Bangladesh. We used the oxygen-isotope 18O/16O ratio (δ18Oc) of coralline aragonite (CaCO3) to reconstruct changes in the δ18O of seawater (δ18Ow) attributed to freshening from monsoon rains. During both climate states, corals recorded large variations in δ18Oc (up to 2 parts per thousand or ‰). We attribute these changes, in part, to local salinity changes which are reflected by variability in δ18Ow from local riverine discharge. While our records only represent 5-year snapshots and may not be representative of the av-erage climate state, this data does not support that the monsoon was substantially weaker during the LIA compared to the modern. In this study, the coral records indicate subtle patterns of isotopic compo-sition as a function of precipitation and temperature variability, serving as a preliminary for further study through longer records lasting a century. Beyond this, it would better our understanding of interac-tions between extremes in temperature and climate systems.

4. Recent measurements of subsidence in the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta, Bangladesh

Deltas, the low-lying land at rivers mouths, are sensitive to the delicate balance between sea level rise, land subsidence and sedimentation. Bangladesh and the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta (GBD) have been highlighted as a region at risk from sea level rise, but reliable estimates of land subsidence have been limited. While early studies in the GBD suggested high rates of relative sea level rise, recent papers estimate more modest rates. Our objective is to better quantify the magnitude, spatial variability, and depth variation of compaction and subsidence in the GBD in order to better evaluate the processes controlling it and the pattern of relative sea level rise in this vulnerable region.With support from the Bangladesh Water Development Board, we have rehabilitated previously installed GNSS and installed new GNSS co-located with Rod Surface Elevation Tables (RSET) to better understand the balance of subsidence and sedimentation in the coastal zone in SW Bangladesh, which is less affected by the active tectonic boundaries to the north and the east. The continuous GNSSs installed in 2003 and 2012 were mounted on reinforced concrete building roofs. GPS stations in the area yield subsidence rate estimates of 3-7 mm/y. To densify the subsidence data, in early 2020 we resurveyed 48 concrete Survey of Bangladesh geodetic monuments in SW Bangladesh that were installed in 2002. Although only measured at the start and end of the period, the time span between the two measurements is ~18 years enabling us to estimate subsidence over this timespan.Preliminary results show that about ½ the sites yielded very high subsidence rates; repeat measurements confirm the suspicion that the monuments at these sites are unstable and have undergone localized subsidence from settling or anthropogenic activity. The remaining sites show an increase in subsidence from the NW to the SE, consistent with estimates of average Holocene subsidence (Grall et al., 2018). However, rates from the campaign stations are much higher than those from continuous GNSS sites, but only slightly higher than an RSET site. We interpret that the continuous building GNSS omit very shallow compaction-related subsidence, while RSETs neglect deep subsidence. This is further reinforced by results from a compaction meter consisting of 6 wells from 20 to 300 m depth with vertical optical fiber strainmeters in each well. They show a decrease in compaction with depth. While initial results require further investigation, we highlight the importance of multiple methodologies for interpreting subsidence rates--deep, shallow, natural, anthropogenic--in vulnerable delta regions.

In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide. Our ultimate goal is to encourage intellectual and technical innovation in the field.

In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide. Our ultimate goal is to encourage intellectual and technical innovation in the field.

European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly, 19-30 Apr 2021.-- 1 page, The next-generation VLBI system called VGOS (VLBI Global Observing System) has been designed and built as a significant improvement over the legacy geodetic VLBI system to meet the accuracy and stability goals set by the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS). Improved geodetic products are expected as the VGOS technique transitions from demonstration to operational status, which is underway. Since 2019, a network of nine VGOS stations has been observing bi-weekly under the auspices of the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS) to generate standard geodetic products. These products, together with the mixed-mode VLBI observations that tie the VGOS and legacy networks together will be contributions to the next realization of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF2020). Moreover, since 2020 a subset of 2 to 4 VGOS stations has also been observing in a VLBI Intensive-like mode to assess the feasibility of Earth rotation (UT1) estimation using VGOS. Intensives are daily legacy VLBI observations that are run on a daily basis using a single baseline between Kokee Park Geophysical Observatory, Hawaii, and Wettzell Observatory, Germany, made with the goal of near-real-time monitoring of UT1. In this presentation, we will describe the VGOS observations, correlation, post-processing, and preliminary geodetic results, including UT1. We will also compare the VGOS estimates to estimates from legacy VLBI, including estimates from mixed-mode observations, to explore the precision and accuracy of the VGOS products

In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide. Our ultimate goal is to encourage intellectual and technical innovation in the field.

These datasets are publicly available through space geodesy data servers, such as the CDDIS, and from the corresponding author on reasonable request.-- Code availability: The data were analyzed and figures were prepared using author-generated matlab™ scripts. The geodetic analysis used the publicly available program nuSolve (Bolotin et al. 2019), We measured the components of the 31-m-long vector between the two very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) antennas at the Kokee Park Geophysical Observatory (KPGO), Hawaii, with approximately 1 mm precision using phase delay observables from dedicated VLBI observations in 2016 and 2018. The two KPGO antennas are the 20 m legacy VLBI antenna and the 12 m VLBI Global Observing System (VGOS) antenna. Independent estimates of the vector between the two antennas were obtained by the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) using standard optical surveys in 2015 and 2018. The uncertainties of the latter survey were 0.3 and 0.7 mm in the horizontal and vertical components of the baseline, respectively. We applied corrections to the measured positions for the varying thermal deformation of the antennas on the different days of the VLBI and survey measurements, which can amount to 1 mm, bringing all results to a common reference temperature. The difference between the VLBI and survey results are 0.2 ± 0.4 mm, −1.3 ± 0.4 mm, and 0.8 ± 0.8 mm in the East, North, and Up topocentric components, respectively. We also estimate that the Up component of the baseline may suffer from systematic errors due to gravitational deformation and uncalibrated instrumental delay variations at the 20 m antenna that may reach ± 10 and −2 mm, respectively, resulting in an accuracy uncertainty on the order of 10 mm for the relative heights of the antennas. Furthermore, possible tilting of the 12 m antenna increases the uncertainties in the differences in the horizontal components to 1.0 mm. These results bring into focus the importance of (1) correcting to a common reference temperature the measurements of the reference points of all geodetic instruments within a site, (2) obtaining measurements of the gravitational deformation of all antennas, and (3) monitoring local motions of the geodetic instruments. In order to understand the seismic hazard associated with the Sunda megathrust along SE Bangladesh, it is necessary to document geologic evidence for the 1762 Arakan earthquake (M8.5–8.8) and prior events. Historical records indicated that the 1762 earthquake caused extensive damage along the Arakan segment of the Sunda subduction system, but geologic evidence for the earthquake farther north is necessary to better understand its associated seismic hazard to the heavily populated nation of Bangladesh. To document the paleoseismic history and understand ongoing tectonic deformation, we conducted detailed analyses of corals and microatolls in Saint Martin's Island, SE Bangladesh. The coral growth bands were studied, dated using U/Th systematics and their elevation was measured using high-precision GPS with RTX™ capability. The U/Th dating and >2 m of elevation differences between dead and living corals provide strong evidence of the coseismic uplift of 1762 Arakan earthquake. Based on annual banding patterns and reconstruction of the highest level of survival, coral microatolls indicate a tectonic subsidence rate of 2.2 ± 0.8 mm/yr prior to their uplift, consistent with elastic strain accumulation before the earthquake. In contrast, annual growth bands of a living coral microatoll indicate that Saint Martin's Island is presently experiencing uplift, at a rate of 1.8 ± 0.1 mm/yr. This suggests that the anticline underlying Saint Martin's Island is actively deforming following the earthquake. Our study also provides evidence for two additional earthquakes taking place in ~700 and ~1140 CE. These findings suggest a preliminary earthquake recurrence interval of ~500 years. Based on our results, the 1762 rupture can be extended from Faul Island (18°N) to Saint Martin's Island in SE Bangladesh (20.6°N). The motions documented from the corals suggest that this segment of the Arakan collision zone is storing sufficient energy to cause a future earthquake of M > 8.

A weighted overlay analysis was conducted to calculate Water Quality Index (WQI) for drinking water using WHO and Bangladesh drinking water standards (BDWS) and for irrigation using irrigation water quality standards. The method used a normalized quality rating scale (qi) and relative weight (wi) for several water quality parameters to calculate WQI. This index-based suitability analysis was carried out to assess the overall water quality of groundwater in Bangladesh used for drinking and irrigation purposes. Drinking water quality index (DWQI) calculation was done based on As, Mn and hardness concentrations. For irrigation water quality index (IWQI) As, B, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Na, Zn and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) were used. WQIs were calculated separately for the shallow tube wells (STW) (depth 150 m). The results revealed that 40.4% STWs and 88.7% DTWs have safe drinking water according to BDWS 57.6% STWs and 90% DTWs have safe drinking water based on WHO drinking water standards. Irrigation water quality index shows that 8.1% STWs and 23.1% DTWs have safe water quality. It has also been found that majority of deep tube wells have better water quality than shallow tube wells due to lower concentrations of contaminants in the deep tube wells compared to shallow tube wells. Some of the dissolved constituents in the groundwater of Bangladesh can potentially be great source of nutrients supplements required for plant growth. If the nutrients dissolved in groundwater replace the nutrients in fertilizers needed for plant growth, an average of US$12.61(BDT 1069) could be saved, which is approximately 19% of the total fertilizer cost.

The first Holocene stratigraphic record of river-channel occupation and switching between the Brahmaputra–Jamuna and Old Brahmaputra paleovalleys is presented here. Motivated by the Brahmaputra River's historic avulsion from the Old Brahmaputra channel to its present-day Jamuna course, we have obtained sediment and radiocarbon samples from 41 boreholes along a 120 km transect crossing these two braided-river valleys. The stratigraphy along this transect reveals sand-dominated Holocene channel systems, each bound by remnant, mud-capped Pleistocene stratigraphy. Using sediment lithology and bulk strontium concentration as a provenance indicator, we define the geometry and channel-occupation history of each paleovalley. The western Brahmaputra–Jamuna valley is broad and somewhat deeper compared with the Old Brahmaputra valley, the latter actually comprising a composite of two narrower sub-valleys bifurcated by an antecedent topographic remnant. The gently sloped valley margins (slope: 0.002 to 0.007) and high width-to-thickness ratio (W/T: ~ 1000) of the Brahmaputra–Jamuna valley suggest that it was filled primarily through lateral channel migration and the reworking of braidbelt and overbank deposits. Conversely, the two Old Brahmaputra sub-valleys have comparatively steeper valley margins (slope: 0.007 to 0.022) and lower width-to-thickness ratios (W/T: ~ 125 and ~ 250), indicating that these were filled primarily through vertical aggradation of channel sands. We attribute this disparity in valley geometry and fill processes to the different occupation histories for each valley. In this case, the much larger Brahmaputra–Jamuna valley represents the principal, if not singular, river course during the last lowstand of sea-level, with a prominent gravel lag underlying the valley. In contrast the smaller Old Brahmaputra valleys do not appear to have been present, or at least well developed, at the last lowstand. Rather these courses were first occupied during the early Holocene transgression, and we infer that the river had been previously excluded from this region by the relatively higher elevation between the Madhupur Terrace and the Shillong Massif. We also demonstrate that the Brahmaputra River experienced 3–4 major avulsions during the Holocene, with considerably longer occupation times within the principal Brahmaputra–Jamuna valley. Together these observations indicate that occupation history and antecedent topography have been important controls on river course mobility and avulsion behavior.

Annual sediment delivery by the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers to the Bengal margin has kept pace with sea level rise since the mid Holocene, sustaining subaerial growth of the delta. However, the Sundarbans region of the tidal delta is disconnected from major distributary sources of sediment and is often thought to be sediment starved, eroding, and susceptible to the meter of sea level rise predicted for the 21st century. Despite these assumptions, direct sedimentation measurements on the tidal delta plain reveal widespread mean annualized accretion rates of ∼1.1 cm yr−1, although heterogeneous depositional patterns indicate that topography and internal creek networks influence local sediment distribution. Short-lived radioisotope inventories (7Be: t1/2 = 53.3 days) measured on the freshly accumulated sediments indicate that about ½ of the mass deposited on the lower delta was sourced directly from the seasonal flood pulse of the river; the remaining ½ is derived from older (≥1 yr) reworked sediments. Net sedimentation on this part of the delta traps ∼10% of annual Ganges–Brahmaputra sediment load, with accretion rates roughly equivalent to the mean regional rate of relative sea-level rise (RSLR) of ∼1.0 cm yr−1. If these sedimentation rates are representative of longer-term trends and subsidence rates remain stable over the next century, the lower delta plain may continue to maintain its elevation and stability despite documented mangrove retreat around its seaward edges.

23. Interactions between molten metal splats landing on a substrate during coating formation

- Abstract
Interactions between multiple splats landing on a substrate was studied experimentally by photographing deformations of droplets as they land and freeze on the substrate, or previously solidified splats. Uniform-size molten tin droplets (550 µm diameter) were produced using a drop-on-demand generator. To achieve high impact velocities the stainless steel coupons used as substrates were mounted on the rim of a rotating flywheel and heated using cartridge heaters to vary substrate temperature. To hit a falling droplet with the substrate and photograph its impact, a timing circuit was used to synchronize the ejection of a droplet, triggering of the camera and a flash to provide illumination. The substrate temperature and substrate roughness significantly affected splat impact dynamics. Droplets hitting a smooth cold substrate splashed extensively whereas those hitting a hot substrate spread in the form of a smooth disc. The final splat shapes were dependent on the offset distance between the impacting droplet and the previously solidified splat. The size of fingers around the splat edge increased with the offset distance. Large pieces of metal detached from the droplet rim when the droplet hit a rough substrate whereas droplets hitting previously solidified splats splashed in a star-like shape with extremely long fingers.

Background & objectives: Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of dengue generally breeds in intradomestic and peridomestic containers made up of different materials, i.e. plastic, iron, rubber, earthen material etc. The material of container is likely to affect the temperature of water in container with variation in environmental temperature. The present study was aimed to determine the effect of different container materials on larval development of Ae. aegypti at different temperatures. Methods: Newly hatched I instar larvae (2-4 h old) were used in the study and experiments were conducted using three different containers made up of plastic, iron and earthen material. Three replicates for each type of container at 22, 26, 30, 34, 38, 40, and 42°C were placed in environmental chamber for the development of larvae. Results: At temperatures >22°C, 50% pupation was completed in earthen pot within 4.3±0.6 to 6.3±0.6 days followed by plastic containers (5±0 to 8±0 days) and iron containers (6±0 to 9±0 days). Developmental time for 50% pupation in the three containers differed significantly (p < 0.05) at all the experimental temperature ranges. A significant variation was found in the temperature of environmental chamber and the temperature of water in three types of containers (p < 0.05). The difference in the temperatures of water in different containers resulted in significant variations in the developmental period of larvae. More than 35°C temperature of water was found inimical for pupal development. Interpretation & conclusion: The results revealed the variation in temperature of water in different types of containers depending on the material of container, affecting duration of larval development. As the larval development was faster in earthen pot as compared to plastic and iron containers, community should be discouraged for storing the water in earthen pots. However, in view of containers of different materials used by the community in different temperature zones in the country, further studies are required for devising area-specific preventive measures for Aedes breeding.
