As unmanned systems become standard equipment, the ability to monitor and manage system health is not just an enabling technology, but is required in order to meet platform availability and supportability goals. Its unique requirements can affect the selection of hardware, the strategy for collecting and processing data, and the integration of healthrelated information with other subsystems. The Open System Architecture for Condition Based Maintenance (OSA-CBM) is a standard aimed to reduce the development and integration cost of Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) systems and to achieve a higher level of performance that includes totally integrated diagnostics and prognostic capabilities. However, despite the well-known advantages of the approach, there have been a few implementation examples of the standard. In this paper, we discuss the applicability of the data centric publish/subscribe model for the design and development of OSA-CBM systems. Computational power and bandwidth are always the key constraints in IVHM application deployments. The publish/subscribe software model is used to form a fundamental structure of the OSA-CBM software, both module’s internal components and inter-module (middleware) communications. The primary benefit of publish/subscribe interaction style is that it abstracts the message transport from the software components or modules and allows them to be uncoupled. The module can add/change/remove internal components from the internal publish/subscribe data domain, called blackboard, and subscribe to local add/change/remove notification. Module blackboards are to assure scalability and reconfigurable. The resulting OSA-CBM design provides software enabling capability to distribute/reconfigure IVHM data processing algorithms across the hardware platforms to meet the required computation and bandwidth constraints. Moreover, another system potential would be a rapid deployment capability, which a generic OSA-CBM module can be programmed via a process description script change. This frees developers to concentrate on the domain-specific issues of their application. Finally, an example application is presented based on a Machine Fault Simulator Gearbox to illustrate the described aspects.

Input-output approximate linearisation of a non-linear sixth order system has been studied. A method for controlling the non-linear system that is i/o linearisable is examined that retains the order and the relative degree of the system in the linearisation process, hence producing a linearised system with no internal or zero dynamics. Desired tracking performance for lateral accelerations and roll rate of the missile is achieved by using a non-linear control law that has been derived by selecting the augmented lateral accelarations and roll rate as the linearisation outputs. Simulation results are shown that exercise the final design and show that the linearisation and controller design are satisfactory.

A sideslip velocity autopilot is designed for a model of a tactical missile. The tail-controlled missile in the cruciform fin configuration is modelled as a secondorder quasi-linear parameter-varying system. This nonlinear model is obtained from the Taylor linearised model of the horizontal motion by including explicit dependence of the aerodynamic derivatives on a state (incidence) and external parameters (Mach number). The autopilot design is based on Polynomial Eigenstructure Assignment which can be view as another approach to dynamic inversion. The theory of Polynomial Eigenstructure Assignment is described and the resulting controller is presented in a chosen structure. The stability is proved over the full envelope of the missile. Simulations for constant lateral acceleration demands show good tracking with fast response time over the full envelope.

International audience; The impact of the penetration of small quantities of calcium-magnesium-alumino-silicates (CMAS) glassy melt in the porous plasma-sprayed (PS) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) is often neglected even though it might play a non-negligible role on the sintering and hence on the thermal insulation potential of TBCs. In this study, the sintering potential of small CMAS deposits (from 0.25 to 3 mg.cm-2) on freestanding yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) PS TBCs annealed at 1250°C for 1 h was investigated. The results showed a gradual in-depth sintering with increasing CMAS deposits. This sintering was concomitant with local transformations of the tetragonal YSZ and resulted in an increase in the thermal diffusivity of the coatings that reached a maximum of 110 % for the fully penetrated coating.

International audience; The fundamental colloidal properties of pristine graphene flakes remain incompletely understood, with conflicting reports about their chemical character, hindering potential applications that could exploit the extraordinary electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties of graphene. Here, the true amphipathic nature of pristine graphene flakes is demonstrated through wet-chemistry testing, optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and density functional theory, molecular dynamics, and Monte Carlo calculations, and it is shown how this fact paves the way for the formation of ultrastable water/oil emulsions. In contrast to commonly used graphene oxide flakes, pristine graphene flakes possess well-defined hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions: the basal plane and edges, respectively, the interplay of which allows small flakes to be utilized as stabilizers with an amphipathic strength that depends on the edge-to-surface ratio. The interactions between flakes can be also controlled by varying the oil-to-water ratio. In addition, it is predicted that graphene flakes can be efficiently used as a new-generation stabilizer that is active under high pressure, high temperature, and in saline solutions, greatly enhancing the efficiency and functionality of applications based on this material.

International audience; Alloy material selection for sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective use in components is a key requirement for both power generation and aerospace sectors. Superalloys are manufactured using a combination of different elements, selected carefully to balance mechanical performance and environmental resistance to be used in a variety of different service conditions. Therefore, a fundamental understanding of each element is critical to alloy design. In this paper, the interaction of alloy chemistry, particularly chromium as a corrosion-resistant element along with titanium and molybdenum, and their effect on alloys performance for the relevant gas turbine industries were discussed. Based on the findings, the single-crystal alloy is found to be a better corrosion resistant alloy exhibited higher corrosion resistance in comparison to polycrystal alloys and proved that microstructure has a significant impact on alloy performance. This study also established that molybdenum level in chromia former alloys can significantly enhance the corrosion damage.

The modelling of wave-structure interaction (WSI) has significant applications in understanding natural processes as well as securing the safety and efficiency of marine engineering. Based on the technique of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the open-source simulation framework - OpenFOAM, this paper provides a state-of-the-art review of WSI modelling methods. The review categorises WSI scenarios and suggests their suitable computational approaches, concerning a rigid, deformable or porous structure in regular, irregular, non-breaking or breaking waves. Extensions of WSI modelling for wave-structure-seabed interactions and various wave energy converters are also introduced. As a result, the present review aims to help understand the CFD modelling of WSI and guide the use of OpenFOAM for target WSI problems.

Intensification of the hydrological cycle resulting from climate change in West Africa poses significant risks for the region's rapidly urbanising cities, but limited research on flood risk has been undertaken at the urban domain scale. Furthermore, conventional climate models are unable to realistically represent the type of intense storms which dominate the West African monsoon. This paper presents a decision-first framing of climate research in co-production of a climate-hydrology-flooding modelling chain, linking scientists working on state-of-the-art regional climate science with decision-makers involved in city planning for future urban flood management in the city of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The realistic convection-permitting model over Africa (CP4A) is applied at the urban scale for the first time and data suggest significant intensification of high-impact weather events and demonstrate the importance of considering the spatio-temporal scales in CP4A. Hydrological modelling and hydraulic modelling indicate increases in peak flows and flood extents in Ouagadougou in response to climate change which will be further exacerbated by future urbanisation. Advances in decision-makers' capability for using climate information within Ouagadougou were observed, and key recommendations applicable to other regional urban areas are made. This study provides proof of concept that a decision-first modelling-chain provides a methodology for co-producing climate information that can, to some extent, bridge the usability gap between what scientists think is useful and what decision-makers need.The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10113-022-01943-x.

International audience; This paper describes work carried out within the EU-funded FOOTPRINT project to characterize the diversity of European agricultural and environmental conditions with respect to parameters which most influence the environmental fate of pesticides. Pan-European datasets for soils, climate, land cover and cropping were intersected, using GIS, to identify the full range of unique combinations of climate, soil and crop types which characterize European agriculture. The resulting FOOTPRINT European agro-environmental dataset constitutes a large number of polygons (approximately 1,700,000) with attribute data files for i) area fractions of annual crops related to each arable-type polygon (as an indicator of its probability of occurrence); and, ii) area fractions of each soil type in each polygon (as an indicator of its probability of occurrence). A total of 25,044 unique combinations of climate zones, agricultural land cover classes, administrative units and soil map units were identified. The same soil/crop combinations occur in many polygons which have the same climate while the fractions of the soils and arable crops are different. The number of unique combinations of climate, soil and agricultural land cover class is therefore only 7961. 26-year daily meteorological data, soil profile characteristics and crop management features were associated with each unique combination. The agro-environmental scenarios developed can be used to underpin the parameterization of environmental fate models for pesticides and should also have relevance for other agricultural pollutants. The implications for the improvement and further development of risk assessment procedures for pesticides are discussed.

International audience; Wearable devices are ideal for personalized electronic applications in several domains such as healthcare, entertainment, sports and military. Although wearable technology is a growing market, current wearable devices are predominantly battery powered accessory devices, whose form factors also preclude them from utilizing the large area of the human body for spatiotemporal sensing or energy harvesting from body movements. E-textiles provide an opportunity to expand on current wearables to enable such applications via the larger surface area offered by garments, but consumer devices have been few and far between because of the inherent challenges in replicating traditional manufacturing technologies (that have enabled these wearable accessories) on textiles. Also, the powering of e-textile devices with battery energy like in wearable accessories, has proven incompatible with textile requirements for flexibility and washing. Although current e-textile research has shown advances in materials, new processing techniques, and one-off e-textile prototype devices, the pathway to industry scale commercialization is still uncertain. This paper reports the progress on the current technologies enabling the fabrication of e-textile devices and their power supplies including textile-based energy harvesters, energy storage mechanisms, and wireless power transfer solutions. It identifies factors that limit the adoption of current reported fabrication processes and devices in the industry for mass-market commercialization.

International audience; Soil functions, including climate regulation and the cycling of water and nutrients, are of central importance for a number of environmental issues of great societal concern. To understand and manage these functions, it is crucial to be able to quantify the structure of soils, now increasingly referred to as their “architecture,” as it constraints the physical, chemical and biological processes in soils. This quantification was traditionally approached from two different angles, one focused on aggregates of the solid phase, and the other on the pore space. The recent development of sophisticated, non-disturbing imaging techniques has led to significant progress in the description of soil architecture, in terms of both the pore space and the spatial configuration of mineral and organic materials. We now have direct access to virtually all aspects of soil architecture. In the present article, we review how this affects the perception of soil architecture specifically when trying to describe the functions of soils. A key conclusion of our analysis is that soil architecture, in that context, imperatively needs to be explored in its natural state, with as little disturbance as possible. The same requirement applies to the key processes taking place in the hierarchical soil pore network, including those contributing to the emergence of a heterogeneous organo-mineral soil matrix by various mixing processes, such as bioturbation, diffusion, microbial metabolism and organo-mineral interactions. Artificially isolated aggregates are fundamentally inappropriate for deriving conclusions about the functioning of an intact soil. To fully account for soil functions, we argue that a holistic approach that centres on the pore space is mandatory while the dismantlement of soils into chunks may still be carried out to study the binding of soil solid components. In the future, significant progress is expected along this holistic direction, as new, advanced technologies become available.

Macroscopic models of soil organic matter (SOM) turnover have faced difficulties in reproducing SOM dynamics or in predicting the spatial distribution of carbon stocks. These models are based on a largely inadequate linear response of soil microorganisms to bulk concentrations of nutrients and it is clear that a new approach to SOM modelling is required. Introducing explicit microbial activity and organic matter (OM) reactivity in macroscopic models represents a challenge because of the fine spatial scales at which the processes occur. To get a better grasp on interactions that take place at the microscale, a new generation of SOM models have been developed at the spatial scale of the soil microenvironments where microorganisms evolve. These models are well adapted to challenge traditional hypotheses about the influence of soil architecture on soil microbial activity. Soil architecture provides the stage for a dynamic spatial accessibility of resources to microbes and the emergence of interactions between the actors in SOM decomposition. In this context, we review microscale models of microbial activity that have been designed for soils and soil analogues. To understand how these models account for spatial accessibility, we look in detail at how soil microenvironments are described in the different approaches and how microbial colonies are spatialized in these microenvironments. We present the advantages and disadvantages of the developed strategies and we discuss their limits.

International audience; Over the last two decades, the fact that soils are significant sources of greenhouse gases (GHG), e.g., carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and water vapor, has received considerable attention from the scientific community. Many laboratory and field experiments have been carried out to investigate the release of GHG by soils, and a wide range of computer modeling approaches have been explored to encapsulate what is known about the process, as well as to improve its prediction at various spatial and temporal scales.

International audience; The aim of this study is to propose an empirical spatial model to estimate the spatial variability of grapevine phenology at the within-field scale. This spatial model allows the characterization of the spatial variability of a given variable of the fields through a single measurement performed in the field (reference site) and a combination of site-specific coefficients calculated through historical information. This approach was compared to classical approaches requiring extensive sampling and phenology models based on climatic data, which do not consider the spatial variability of the field. The study was conducted on two fields of Vitis vinifera, one of cv Cabernet Sauvignon (CS, 1.56 ha) and the other one of cv Chardonnay (CH, 1.66 ha) located in Maule Valley, Chile. Date of occurrence of grapevine phenology (budburst, flowering and veraison) were observed at the within field level following a regular sampling grid during 4 seasons for cv CS and 2 seasons for cv CH. The best results were obtained with the devised spatial model in almost all cases, with a Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) lower than 3 days. However, if the variability of phenology is low, the traditional method of sampling could lead to better results. This study is the first step towards a modeling of the spatial variability of grapevine phenology at the within-field scale. To be fully operational in commercial vineyards, the calibration process needs simplification, for example, using low cost, inexpensive ancillary information to zone vineyards according to grapevine phenology.

International audience; On-orbit applications, such as active debris removal, satellite refueling, maintenance and satellite health diagnosis require the ability for low-cost spacecraft to closely inspect other orbital objects in a non-cooperative manner. During this kind of mission, the relative navigation process becomes of critical importance for guaranteeing safe and collision-free proximity operations and maneuvers. The selection of relative navigation sensors appears being a critical task as it might drive the design choices in other subsystems (e.g., Attitude and orbit control system (AOCS), payload, power supply). This paper aims at studying the application of a Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) method to the design of AOCS and Navigation subsystems under small satellite constraints. The porposed MDO process is based on the optimization of navigation performance and mass reduction while respecting volume and power constraints for orbital close rendezvous. The navigation chain, including sensor simulation and navigation filter is simulated and integrated into the design cost function. The proposed MDO process based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA) and on an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) aims at simplifying satellite design by determining a set of optimal admissible sensor combinations despite contradictory objectives on navigation and payload accuracy, mass reduction, power consumption and volume. Possible key advantages of the inclusion of the relative navigation subsystem within MDO process are the reduction of the design process time, the automation and optimization of the navigation architecture while respecting volume and power constraints of small satellites. A demonstration of the effectiveness of the proposed MDO method is provided on the benchmark of AVANTI mission.

The COVID-19 crisis has become the most intense and long-lasting in the history of aviation. There is already a significant literature on the immediate impact of the outbreak, as well as on speculation on the future evolution of the industry. This paper seeks to contribute to this discussion by assessing a year into the crisis the demand related aspects and passenger behavioural impacts of the pandemic. Specifically, the paper aims to identify discrete market segments of air passengers according to their shared attitudes and preferences about air travel in light of the COVID-19 crisis, as well as past behaviour and future travel intentions. To achieve this, we analyse data from a large (n = 2096) online questionnaire survey of air passengers in Norway. The cluster analysis identifies four distinct passenger segments, with each displaying varying attitudes, behaviours, and levels of concern about air travel. One of these groups, described as the 'Apprehensive Elders', were identified as having the highest level of concern about flying, and subsequently showed a sharp decline in their intention to travel in the future. Another group, termed the 'Cautious Commuters', showed similarly enhanced levels of concerns about flying, but maintained a high propensity to fly following the pandemic despite these concerns. Regarding possible interventions to increase confidence in flying in the future, across all segments the data shows a clear preference for more 'traditional' active interventions, including wearing of face masks and enforcement of physical distancing, over and above passive or technological interventions. Norway represents a valuable case as a possible signal for future policy and practice in relation to the recovery of air travel following the pandemic. The findings have important implications for air transport managers and decision makers in terms of managing the perceptions and expectations of different passenger groups as air travel begins to return.

Airports are increasingly focused on implementing digital technologies at key stages of the airport journey to enhance the passenger experience. However, passengers have different preferences. TwoStep Cluster Analysis is used to reveal the presence of distinct segments according to their preferences. The findings are based on a survey of 6082 passengers at airports in Norway. Three distinct segments are identified: those that prefer traditional manual processes, those that prefer automated technology-based processes, and those that prefer more personalised technology-based processes. Significant differences are revealed for each segment according to passenger and trip characteristics and opinions regarding how the use of digital technologies at airports impact on personal privacy and human dignity. The findings contribute to knowledge on passenger preferences at airports and can help to inform airport decision making.

Large wood is a key component of river channels that affects numerous hydrological, physical and geomorphological processes. It promotes a diversity of benthic habitats in-channel and has shown to support more abundant and diverse benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in previous ecological studies. However, the effects of large wood on the structural and functional diversities of hyporheic invertebrates are less well studied, and simultaneous examination of these diversity metrics on hyporheic and benthic compartments of the stream bed has not been conducted previously. Therefore, this study investigates the taxonomic and functional diversities of hyporheic and benthic invertebrate assemblages around natural accumulations of large wood in a British lowland river. Taxonomic and functional diversities were partitioned (into alpha, beta, and gamma diversities) and examined in reaches with and without large wood (control). We found that functional diversity is often decoupled from taxonomic diversity, demonstrating a functional redundancy of the macroinvertebrate assemblage for both hyporheic and benthic zones. Moreover, the highest functional variability at alpha-scale was observed in large wood habitats, which suggests that taxonomic diversity is enhanced by the small-scale environmental heterogeneity around large wood. To this end, this study contributes empirical evidence of functional and structural responses of invertebrates to large wood accumulation. Such information could be used to better understand the ecological implications of restoration works in lowland rivers and guide more effective management strategies.

International audience; Production ramp-up is a critical step in product life cycle as it could lead to either success or failure of product introduction into the market. The criticality of this step is owed to several factors including the uncertainty underlying this step regarding both expected costs and benefits, and thus to the complexity of decision-making. In order to enlighten decision makers particularly in multi-variant production contexts, this paper elaborates on an analytical model supporting cost-benefit analysis of production ramp-up strategies. The model takes into account capacity planning decisions and learning curves in determining cost-benefit estimates. The model is illustrated and discussed through a keyrings manufacturing process.

Sustained airport congestion periods translate into delays, especially in hub-and-spoke networks in which delay propagation is more evident. We examine the impact of connecting passenger arrival delays on network delay propagation by using passenger level data combined with flight delay data that allow us to analyse the correlation between delayed incoming flights and departure delays at the 21 U.S. airports with most delays, in July 2018. Results show that correlation between daily arrival delays and daily carrier induced departure delays are statistically significant only for flights carrying high proportions of connecting passengers. Correlation values are also higher for short-to-moderate arrival delays. In addition, a Neural Network model was trained for six major airports to build a delay prediction model and map the potential delay propagation. The results of the propagation scenarios suggest that the presence of a unique dominant carrier at an airport translates into a stronger correlation between arrival and carrier delays than that at airports where different carriers compete for connecting passengers. Furthermore, airline hubs located near the areas of the network with more traffic density, independently of the hub's volume of traffic, are more likely to propagate the delay than hubs located in the periphery. The results of this study can be relevant for airline, airport, and traffic control policies aimed at mitigating airport and network congestion.

Rural Europe encompasses a variety of landscapes with differing levels of forest, agriculture, and agroforestry that can deliver multiple ecosystem services (ES). Whilst provisioning and regulating ES associated with individual land covers are comparatively well studied, less is known about the associated cultural ES. Only seldom are provisioning, regulating, and cultural ES investigated together to evaluate how they contribute to multifunctionality. In this study we combined biophysical and sociocultural approaches to assess how different landscapes (dominated by forest, agriculture or agroforestry) and landscape characteristics (i.e. remoteness and landscape diversity) drive spatial associations of ES (i.e. synergies, trade-offs and bundles). We analysed data of: i) seven provisioning and regulating ES (spatially modelled), and; ii) six cultural ES (derived from participatory mapping data) in 12 study sites across four different biogeographical regions of Europe. Our results showed highly differentiated ES profiles for landscapes associated to a specific land cover, with agroforestry generally providing higher cultural ES than forest and agriculture. We found a positive relationship between the proportion of forest in a landscape and provisioning and regulating ES, whilst agriculture showed negative relationships. We found four distinct bundles of ES. Three of them were directly related to a dominant land cover and the fourth to a mixture of forest and agroforestry that was associated with high social value. The latter bundle was related to zones close to urban areas and roads and medium to high landscape diversity. These findings suggest that agroforestry should be prioritised over other land covers in such areas as it delivers a suite of multiple ES, provided it is close to urban areas or roads. Our results also illustrate the importance and application of including people’s perception in the assessment of ES associations and highlight the relevance of developing integrated analyses of ES to inform landscape management decisions.

AGAP : équipe CONSYT; International audience; Whilst the benefits of agroforestry are widely recognised in tropical latitudes few studies have assessed how agroforestry is perceived in temperate latitudes. This study evaluates how stakeholders and key actors including farmers, landowners, agricultural advisors, researchers and environmentalists perceive the implementation and expansion of agroforestry in Europe. Meetings were held with 30 stakeholder groups covering different agroforestry systems in 2014 in eleven EU countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom). In total 344 valid responses were received to a questionnaire where stakeholders were asked to rank the positive and negative aspects of implementing agroforestry in their region. Improved biodiversity and wildlife habitats, animal health and welfare, and landscape aesthetics were seen as the main positive aspects of agroforestry. By contrast, increased labour, complexity of work, management costs and administrative burden were seen as the most important negative aspects. Overall, improving the environmental value of agriculture was seen as the main benefit of agroforestry, whilst management and socio-economic issues were seen as the greatest barriers. The great variability in the opportunities and barriers of the systems suggests enhanced adoption of agroforestry across Europe will be most likely to occur with specific initiatives for each type of system.

International audience; The ability of vortex generators to reduce the unsteady distortion at the exit plane of an S duct is investigated. The three components of the velocity at the aerodynamic interface plane were measured using a stereo particle velocimetry system with high spatial resolution. This enabled an assessment of the synchronous swirl distortion at the duct exit. A total of nine vortex generator cases have been investigated with a systematic variation of key design variables. Overall, the vortex generators change the duct secondary flows and separation and are able to substantially restructure the flowfield at the aerodynamic interface plane. The pressure distortion could be reduced up to 50%, and a reduction in pressure loss of 30% was achieved for the mean flowfield. The vortex generators had a substantial influence on the unsteadiness of the flowfield with a reduction in peak swirl unsteadiness of 61% and an overall reduction of unsteady swirl distortion of 67%. They also suppressed the primary unsteady flow switching mechanism of the datum configuration, which is associated with the oscillation of bulk and twin swirl regimes. Consequently, extreme events that lead to high swirl intensity are suppressed, which lower by 45% the maximum swirl intensity for the vortex generator cases.

The special issue on Biochar as an Option for Sustainable Resource Management Key priorities in biochar research for future guidance of sustainable policy development have been identified by expert assessment within the COST Action TD1107. The current level of scientific understanding (LOSU) regarding the consequences of biochar application to soil were explored. Five broad thematic areas of biochar research were addressed: soil biodiversity and ecotoxicology, soil organic matter and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, soil physical properties, nutrient cycles and crop production, and soil remediation. The highest future research priorities regarding biochar’s effects in soils were: functional redundancy within soil microbial communities, bioavailability of biochar’s contaminants to soil biota, soil organic matter stability, GHG emissions, soil formation, soil hydrology, nutrient cycling due to microbial priming as well as altered rhizosphere ecology, and soil pH buffering capacity. International audience; In this paper, a multi-agent probabilistic optimization algorithm is applied to the problem of multi-vehicle coordination. The algorithm is known as "Probability Collectives" (PC) and has roots in Game Theory and Optimization theory. It is traditionally used for finding optimal solutions of NPhard problems such as the travelling salesman problem. On the other end, the proposed PC formulation presented in this paper focuses on a minimal complexity implementation for solving the coordination problem in a time of the order of magnitude of 0.1. Besides time constraints, the emphasis in the design is put on ensuring that the algorithm always comes up with a feasible solution. Simulations show that both objectives are reached while having a decentralized algorithm, and flexible with respect to the type of situations it can deal with. However, the mechanisms explaining these responses are unclear. Citrus limonia was exposed to 0 and 1480 μM Al in nutrient solution for 90 days to test whether the low gs and leaf hydration in plants exposed to Al is associated with increased 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED) gene expression and abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis. Relative leaf water content (RWC), water potential (Ψw) and gas exchange in the leaves, as well as leaf and root ClNCED3, ClNCED1 and ClNCED5 expression and accumulation of ABA and its metabolites (phaseic acid, dihydrophaseic acid, (+)-7′-hydroxy-ABA and ABA-β-D-glucosyl ester) were measured. Aluminum up-regulated ClNCED3 and induced ABA accumulation in the roots before impairments in leaf water status (low Ψw, RWC and gs) could be observed. Leaf ABA concentration increased from 7 to 90 days and this could be partially explained by the up-regulation of ClNCED3, ClNCED1 and ClNCED5 in this organ. Stomatal closure occurred concomitantly with the increase of ABA concentration, and this result provides further evidence of the role of ABA modulation of plant hydration under Al stress. In the various forms of semisolid processing such as thixoforming and thixoforging, the entry into the die occurs in a fraction of a second so it is the transient rheological behavior which governs the initial stages of flow. In experiments in the literature, this rheological behavior is probed through applying rapid transitions in shear rate under isothermal conditions. There is contradictory evidence as to whether the behavior during these transitions is shear thinning or shear thickening, although it is clear that once in the die the material is thinning. Here the data in the literature are reanalyzed to obtain a rationalization of the contradictions which has not previously been available. It is argued that if a suspension is initially in a disagglomerated state (i.e., one which is initially sheared), the instantaneous behavior with a jump-up in shear rate is shear thickening (even if the long-term steady-state behavior is shear thinning) provided the fraction solid is greater than about 0.36 and the final shear rate at the end of the jump is greater than about 100 s−1. If the jump-up in shear rate is made from rest then yield masks the shear thickening.

International audience; Carbon dioxide (CO2) enrichment of anaerobic digesters (AD) was previously identified as a potential on-site carbon revalorisation strategy. This study addresses the lack of studies investigating this concept in up-scaled units and the need to understand the mechanisms of exogenous CO2 utilisation. Two pilot-scale ADs treating food waste were monitored for 225 days, with the test unit being periodically injected with CO2 using a bubble column. The test AD maintained a CH4 production rate of 0.56±0.13 m3 CH4·(kg VSfed·d)-1 and a CH4 concentration in biogas of 68% even when dissolved CO2 levels were increased by a 3 fold over the control unit. An additional uptake of 0.55 kg of exogenous CO2 was achieved in the test AD during the trial period. A 2.5 fold increase in hydrogen (H2) concentration was observed and attributed to CO2 dissolution and to an alteration of the acidogenesis and acetogenesis pathways. A hypothesis for conversion of exogenous CO2 has been proposed, which requires validation by microbial community analysis

The assessment of the impacts of land-use and management on soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics is a major environmental concern, as the soil carbon cycle underpins key ecosystem services. However, assessments based on short-term SOC dynamics face methodological and experimental difficulties. Hurisso et al. (2016) proposed a method to assess SOC dynamics by coupling two methods: Permanganate Oxidizable Carbon (POXC) and Basal Soil Respiration (BSR). This method has been used in laboratory on dried and re-wetted soil samples from temperate regions mainly. In our study, we adapted this method to the field and proposed a cost-effective in-field indicator combining the POXC and in situ Basal Soil Respiration (SituResp (R) method). We tested the indicator at four study sites (n = 169 points) within various tropical land-use and management contexts based on rubber, soybean and oil palm cropping systems respectively in Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia. The results demonstrated the relevance, sensitivity and robustness of the POXC-SituResp (R) indicator to characterize the impact of a gradient of disturbance on SOC dynamics. The results also highlighted the potential of conservation agriculture (no-tillage and crops residues) and compost amendments to accumulate SOC. Rock-Eval (R) analysis showed that POXC-SituResp (R) indicator is negatively linked to excess of potentially mineralizable labile carbon. Carbon pools targeted by the POXC were specified by Rock-Eval (R) pyrolysis measurements to be a rather thermal resistant pool of SOC. Our study confirms that the integrated indicator based on POXC and BSR assess a relative carbon stabilization of SOC pools. This indicator can be measured in the field by a rapid and cost-effective method.

Wind energy farms are moving into deeper and more remote waters to benefit from availability of more space for the installation of wind turbines as well as higher wind speed for the production of electricity. Wind farm asset managers must ensure availability of adequate power supply as well as reliability of wind turbines throughout their lifetime. The environmental conditions in deep waters often change very rapidly, and therefore the performance metrics used in different life cycle phases of a wind energy project will need to be updated on a frequent basis so as to ensure that the wind energy systems operate at the highest reliability. For this reason, there is a crucial need for the wind energy industry to adopt advanced computational tools/techniques that are capable of modelling the risk scenarios in near real-time as well as providing a prompt response to any emergency situation. Bayesian network (BN) is a popular probabilistic method that can be used for system reliability modelling and decision-making under uncertainty. This paper provides a systematic review and evaluation of existing research on the use of BN models in the wind energy sector. To conduct this literature review, all relevant databases from inception to date were searched, and a total of 70 sources (including journal publications, conference proceedings, PhD dissertations, industry reports, best practice documents and software user guides) which met the inclusion criteria were identified. Our review findings reveal that the applications of BNs in the wind energy industry are quite diverse, ranging from wind power and weather forecasting to risk management, fault diagnosis and prognosis, structural analysis, reliability assessment, and maintenance planning and updating. Furthermore, a number of case studies are presented to illustrate the applicability of BNs in practice. Although the paper details information applicable to the wind energy industry, the knowledge gained can be transferred to many other sectors.

This paper discusses the long-term effects of low-cost carrier (LCC) presence at European airports and identifies the airports that have benefited the most from LCC consolidation since 2001. The research uses ‘LCC Market Share’, in terms of seats, to measure the relative importance of LCCs within each airport; and introduces ‘EU LCA Rank’ as a normalised metric of the capacity share of every airport in the European low-cost segment. It evaluates the trends between 2001 and 2019 in all airports in Europe using OAG supply information (seats by carrier). Results show two different phases of LCC rise in Europe, 2001 to 2008 and 2009 to 2019, marked by the effects of the financial crisis of the Great Recession. The analysis highlights the role that LCCs have played in boosting the growth of both primary and secondary airports. Indeed, despite the fact that LCCs have put many smaller airports on the European map, during the second phase of the period of analysis growth has been more significant for major airports and for a few airports that were keen to support the earliest development of LCCs. In that sense, this paper contributes to a better understanding of the historical and contemporary dynamics in European LCCs choice of airports and, in particular, the long-term effects that this disruptive business model have had for airports. This is increasingly important in the context of a potential recovery path from the effects of the response to the Covid-19 pandemic. This paper also attempts to settle academic discussions that attach LCC development to secondary/regional airports disregarding the wide range of strategies used by airlines and airports., Highlights • The Global Financial Crisis was a tipping point for long-term evolution of LCCs in Europe. • LCCs have played a major role in boosting the growth of both primary and secondary airports. • After the Financial Crisis LCC growth focused on primary airports and few regional/secondary. • The use of secondary/regional airports is not a requirement for the development of LCC traffic.

The impact of small deposits of calcium&ndash, magnesium&ndash, aluminium silicates (CMAS) on the top of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) made of yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) produced via electron-beam physical vapour deposition (EB-PVD) is shown to play a role in the microstructural and chemical stability of the coatings, hence, it also affects the thermal insulation potential of TBCs. Therefore, the present work investigates the degradation potential of minor CMAS deposits (from 0.25 to 5 mg&middot, cm&minus, 2) annealed at 1250 &deg, C for 1 h on a novel Er2O3-Y2O3 co-stabilised ZrO2 (ErYSZ) EB-PVD TBC, which is compared to the standard YSZ coating. Due to the higher reactivity of ErYSZ coatings with CMAS, its penetration is limited in comparison with the standard YSZ coatings, hence resulting in a better thermal insulation of the former after ageing.

In this study, reactive crystallisation is introduced into a liquid-liquid membrane contactor for the selective separation, purification and recovery of ammonia from concentrated waste. Whilst liquid-liquid membrane contactor technology has been previously demonstrated for ammonia absorption, further process intensification can be achieved by incorporating crystallisation into transmembrane chemisorption to recover the ammonia as crystalline ammonium sulphate. Reactive crystallisation occurred in the draw solution (sulphuric acid) which was supplied to the lumen-side of the polypropylene hollow-fibre. The ammonium sulphate concentration in the draw solution increased through ammonia mass transfer to supersaturation, at which time induction (the onset of nucleation) commenced. Ammonia mass transfer at draw concentrations above the solubility limit was not limited provided sufficient ‘free’ sulphate was available. This resulted in nucleation which occurred at a low level of supersaturation (C/C*, 1.03) to produce small crystals of around 2.5 μm, which indicated that nucleation was favoured. The nucleation rate was found to be proportional to the ammonia flux in the draw solution. As the solution became more saturated, crystal number increased but crystal growth was comparatively small; this is symptomatic of reactive crystallisation, where the rate of reaction exceeds the rate of mass transfer. Due to the large difference in the ratio between the lumen internal diameter and the mean crystal diameter ( d f i b r e / d m e a n , C S D , ~180), no fibre clogging was observed despite facilitating crystallisation on the lumen-side of the membrane. Transmembrane chemisorption crystallisation presents a feasible process intensification for the selective separation of ammonia from environmental applications. For its integration into environmental applications, solutions to wetting and fouling remain due to associative interactions with the complex organic matrix that are practically achievable through engineering intervention. Subsequent transformation of ammonia into a crystalline phase of ammonium sulphate presents a new product which is of commercial interest.

We present the very first wide-field, 11 by 11 arcmin, optical spectral mapping of M16, one of the most famous star-forming regions in the Galaxy. The data were acquired with the new imaging Fourier transform spectrograph SITELLE mounted on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). We obtained three spectral cubes with R=10'000 (SN1 filter), 1500 (SN2 filter) and 600 (SN3 filter), centered on the Pillars of Creation and the HH216 flow, covering the main optical nebular emission lines: [O II]3726,29 (SN1), Hb, [O III]4959,5007 (SN2), [N II]6548,84, Ha, and [S II]6717,31 (SN3). We validate the performance, calibration, and data reduction of SITELLE, and analyze the structures in the large field-of-view in terms of their kinematics and nebular emission. We compared the SITELLE data to MUSE integral field observations and other spectroscopic and narrow-band imaging data to validate the performance of SITELLE. We computed gas-phase metallicities via the strong-line method, performed a pixel-by-pixel fit to the main emission lines to derive kinematics of the ionized gas, computed the mass-loss rate of the Eastern pillar (the Spire), and combined the SITELLE data with near-infrared narrow-band imaging to characterize the HH216 flow. The comparison with previously published fluxes demonstrates very good agreement. We disentangle the dependence of the gas-phase metallicities (derived via abundance-tracing line ratios) on the degree of ionization and obtain metallicities that are in excellent agreement with the literature. We confirm the bipolar structure of HH216, find evidence for episodic accretion from the source of the flow, and identify its likely driving source. We compute the mass-loss rate of the Spire pillar on the East side of the H II region and find excellent agreement with the correlation between the mass-loss rate and the ionizing photon flux from the nearby cluster NGC6611., 21 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Moving towards a more sustainable future requires concerted actions, particularly in the context of global climate change. Integrated assessments of agricultural systems (IAAS) are considered valuable tools to provide sound information for policy and decision-making. IAAS use storylines to define socio-economic and environmental framework assumptions. While a set of qualitative global storylines, known as the Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs), is available to inform integrated assessments at large scales, their spatial resolution and scope is insufficient for regional studies in agriculture. We present a protocol to operationalize the development of Shared Socio-economic Pathways for European agriculture - Eur-Agri-SSPs - to support IAAS. The proposed design of the storyline development process is based on six quality criteria: plausibility, vertical and horizontal consistency, salience, legitimacy, richness and creativity. Trade-offs between these criteria may occur. The process is science-driven and iterative to enhance plausibility and horizontal consistency. A nested approach is suggested to link storylines across scales while maintaining vertical consistency. Plausibility, legitimacy, salience, richness and creativity shall be stimulated in a participatory and interdisciplinary storyline development process. The quality criteria and process design requirements are combined in the protocol to increase conceptual and methodological transparency. The protocol specifies nine working steps. For each step, suitable methods are proposed and the intended level and format of stakeholder engagement are discussed. A key methodological challenge is to link global SSPs with regional perspectives provided by the stakeholders, while maintaining vertical consistency and stakeholder buy-in. International audience; The capacity of the multiple-input single-output (MISO) free-space optical channel with a per-antenna peak-power constraint and a sum (over all antennas) average-power constraint is studied. The asymptotic low-signal-to-noise-ratio (low-SNR) capacity is determined exactly and close upper and lower bounds are presented in the low-and moderate-SNR regimes. The asymptotic low-SNR limit is achieved by having each transmit antenna signal either with zero or with the maximally allowed peak power, and the latter only if all stronger antennas also send at maximum peak power. In particular, for almost all channel gains, the input to achieve the asymptotic low-SNR capacity is such that its projection on the channel-gain vector has only two or three positive probability point masses, one of them being at zero. The lower bounds at finite SNR are numerical and are obtained using input distributions whose projection on the channel-gain vector has either two, three, or four positive probability masses. Finally, the paper presents two analytic upper bounds on the capacity of the MISO channel: the first one closely follows the proposed numerical lower bounds in the low-SNR regime, and the second one can improve on previous bounds in the moderate-SNR regime.

International audience; Sediment load and budgets are a fundamental component of the process-based hydromorphological framework developed by the REFORM project, and are needed to accurately assess the current condition of a river, its sensitivity to change, and its likely future evolutionary trajectory. This paper presents an evaluation of three different methods for estimating both bedload sediment transport and bed-material budget within river channels, using the Middle Loire River as a case study. The first method is based on the stream power concept and does not need any hydraulic calculations. It yields estimates of the sediment transport in the same order of magnitude as measurements but poor results for the bed-material budget in terms of magnitude and tendency. For the second method, hydraulic parameters are computed using the Manning–Strickler equation (or a 1D hydraulic model for steady flow). It provides useful indicators for understanding river dynamics but does not yield significant improvements compared to the first method. The third method uses 1D numerical software for water flow and river bed evolution. It yields the most accurate results for both sediment transport and bed evolution but requires more data and overall more work to construct the model. Guidance is provided on the amount of data required, the competence needed to build the models, and the predictive capability of each of the methods.

International audience; Offshore wind turbine blades are subject to multiple types of internal and external damages. Internal damages (such as fatigue, wear and cracks) are generally caused by system degradation, whereas the external damages (such as icing, wind and wave shocks) result from harsh marine environments. In this paper, we investigate an optimal opportunistic condition-based maintenance (OCBM) policy for a multi-bladed offshore wind turbine system subjected to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and environmental shocks. When the length of a crack in a blade reaches critical size D, the blade breaks and it has to be replaced by a new one. An environmental shock is minor with probability 1−p and catastrophic with probability p (0≤p≤1). A minor shock causes an instant drop in power output without resulting in any system failure, whereas a catastrophic shock stops the wind turbine and requires system replacement. When the length of a crack in one of the blades exceeds a threshold d (0). The problem is to simultaneously determine the optimal control parameters d⁎ and T⁎ such that the average long-run maintenance cost per blade per unit time is minimized. The explicit expression of the objective function is derived and under certain conditions, the existence and uniqueness of the optimal solution are shown for the infinite-horizon case. The proposed maintenance model is tested on a three-bladed wind turbine and its performance over the system life cycle is evaluated using a Monte-Carlo simulation technique.

Globally, the waste sector contributes to nearly a fifth of anthropogenic methane emitted to the atmosphere and is the second largest source of methane in the UK. In recent years great improvements to reduce those emissions have been achieved by the installation of methane recovery systems at landfill sites, and subsequently methane emissions reported in national emission inventories have been reduced. Nevertheless, methane emissions of landfills remain uncertain and quantification of emission fluxes is essential to verify reported emission inventories and to monitor changes in emissions. Here we present a new approach for methane emission quantification from a complex source such as a landfill site by applying a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to calibrated in situ measurements of methane as part of a field campaign at a landfill site near Ipswich, UK, in August 2014. The methane distribution for different meteorological scenarios is calculated with the CFD model and compared to methane mole fractions measured by an in situ Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer downwind of the prevailing wind direction. Assuming emissions only from the active site, a mean daytime flux of 0.83 mg m−2 s−1, corresponding to a spatially integrated emission of 53.3 kg h−1, was estimated. The addition of a secondary source area adjacent to the active site, where some methane hotspots were observed, improved the agreement between the simulated and measured methane distribution. As a result, the flux from the active site was reduced slightly to 0.71 mg m−2 s−1 (45.6 kg h−1), and at the same time an additional flux of 0.32 mg m−2 s−1 (30.4 kg h−1) was found from the secondary source area. This highlights the capability of our method to distinguish between different emission areas of the landfill site, which can provide more detailed information about emission source apportionment compared to other methods deriving bulk emissions.

Context Current production from natural forests will not satisfy future world demand for timber and fuel wood, and new land management options are required. Aims We explore an innovative production system that combines the production of short rotation coppice in wide alleys with the production of high-value trees on narrow strips of land; it is an alternative form of alley cropping which we propose to call ‘alley coppice’. The aim is to describe this alley coppice system and to illustrate its potential for producing two diverse products, namely high-value timber and energy wood on the same land unit. Methods Based on a comprehensive literature review, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of the alley coppice system and contrast the features with well-known existing or past systems of biomass and wood production. Results We describe and discuss the basic aspects of alley coppice, its design and dynamics, the processes of competition and facilitation, issues of ecology, and areas that are open for future research. Conclusion Based on existing knowledge, a solid foundation for the implementation of alley coppice on suitable land is presented, and the high potential of this system could be shown.

International audience; The study assessed the economic performance of marketable ecosystem services (ES) (biomass production) and non-marketable ecosystem services and dis-services (groundwater, nutrient loss, soil loss, carbon sequestration, pollination deficit) in 11 contrasting European landscapes dominated by agroforestry land use compared to business as usual agricultural practice. The productivity and profitability of the farming activities and the associated ES were quantified using environmental modelling and economic valuation. After accounting for labour and machinery costs the financial value of the outputs of Mediterranean agroforestry systems tended to be greater than the corresponding agricultural system; but in Atlantic and Continental regions the agricultural system tended to be more profitable. However, when economic values for the associated ES were included, the relative profitability of agroforestry increased. Agroforestry landscapes: (i) were associated to reduced externalities of pollution from nutrient and soil losses, and (ii) generated additional benefits from carbon capture and storage and thus generated an overall higher economic gain. Our findings underline how a market system that includes the values of broader ES would result in land use change favouring multifunctional agroforestry. Imposing penalties for dis-services or payments for services would reflect their real world prices and would make agroforestry a more financially profitable system.

International audience; The HIWATE (Health Impacts of long-term exposure to disinfection byproducts in drinking WATEr) project was a systematic analysis that combined the epidemiology on adverse pregnancy outcomes and other health effects with long-term exposure to low levels of drinking water disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the European Union. The present study focused on the relationship of the occurrence and concentration of DBPs with in vitro mammalian cell toxicity. Eleven drinking water samples were collected from five European countries. Each sampling location corresponded with an epidemiological study for the HIWATE program. Over 90 DBPs were identified; the range in the number of DBPs and their levels reflected the diverse collection sites, different disinfection processes, and the different characteristics of the source waters. For each sampling site, chronic mammalian cell cytotoxicity correlated highly with the numbers of DBPs identified and the levels of DBP chemical classes. Although there was a clear difference in the genotoxic responses among the drinking waters, these data did not correlate as well with the chemical analyses. Thus, the agents responsible for the genomic DNA damage observed in the HIWATE samples may be due to unresolved associations of combinations of identified DBPs, unknown emerging DBPs that were not identified, or other toxic water contaminants. This study represents the first to integrate quantitative in vitro toxicological data with analytical chemistry and human epidemiologic outcomes for drinking water DBPs.

International audience; We propose a novel job scheduling approach for homogeneous cluster computing platforms. Its key feature is the use of virtual machine technology to share fractional node resources in a precise and controlled manner. Other VM-based scheduling approaches have focused primarily on technical issues or extensions to existing batch scheduling systems, while we take a more aggressive approach and seek to find heuristics that maximize an objective metric correlated with job performance. We derive absolute performance bounds and develop algorithms for the online, non-clairvoyant version of our scheduling problem. We further evaluate these algorithms in simulation against both synthetic and real-world HPC workloads and compare our algorithms to standard batch scheduling approaches. We find that our approach improves over batch scheduling by orders of magnitude in terms of job stretch, while leading to comparable or better resource utilization. Our results demonstrate that virtualization technology coupled with lightweight online scheduling strategies can afford dramatic improvements in performance for executing HPC workloads.

International audience; With multi-stakeholder issues such as climate change or population growth providing significant challenges for water managers, participatory approaches to planning and management are becoming increasingly popular. To aid water stress mitigation in Bulgaria's Iskar region, a participatory process with a broad range of stakeholders was designed and tested. Options adapted for the region such as risk management and industrial and domestic water conservation were studied. The results suggest that strong research support is needed to adapt participatory management theories into operational planning processes. Definition of appropriate working groups with clear roles and responsibilities are also needed to ensure effective implementation.

The subject of the current paper is the collaborative practices used in the product development process in SMEs (small and medium enterprises). The starting point is an empirical study, part of industry-based fieldwork on the introduction of a product lifecycle management (PLM) system. Our results highlight the need for new approaches to take into account the socio-technical complexity of the collaborative processes. A new tool named CoCa is proposed to analyse collaborative practices in situ. This tool is designed to be used by researchers, consultants or, eventually, project managers in order to track all the collaborative events and the project context. The background and industrial case study, the theoretical basis and design of the tool are described and, finally, some indication is given of its potential use in gaining understanding of complex collaborative processes and in improving design coordination.

International audience; In this paper, we present an approach for producing side scan sonar image mosaicking under a robust SLAM scheme. A Pose Graph based SLAM algorithm is used to perform a correction over the sensor trajectory for enabling image registration, using observation constraints extracted from the images. However, due to the operational context, the available odometry data carries a high degree of uncertainty and could also be discontinued, making the process highly sensitive to false observation data associations. As the automation of the feature extraction and pairing process will eventually produce false positives, we suggest an approach based on the use of switchable constraints and a coarse modeling of the sensor motion when odometry is not recorded for addressing this issue.

Nanocomposite films consisting of gold nanoparticles embedded in an yttria-stabilized zirconia matrix (Au-YSZ) have been synthesized with different gold loadings by reactive magnetron sputtering followed by ex situ annealing in air or laser interference patterning (LIP) treatment. It is shown that the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite films can be modified to a large extent by changing the gold loading, by thermal annealing, or by LIP. The structural and microstructural analyses evidenced the segregation of metallic gold in crystalline form for all synthesis conditions and treatments applied. Thermal annealing above 400 °C is observed to trigger the growth of pre-existing nanoparticles in the volume of the films. Moreover, pronounced segregation of gold to the film surface is observed for Au/(Au + Zr + Y) ratios above 0.40, which may prevent the use of thermal annealing to functionalize gold-rich Au-YSZ coatings. In contrast, significant modifications of the microstructure were detected within the interference spot (spot size close to 2 × 2 mm) of LIP treatments only for the regions corresponding to constructive interference. As a consequence, besides its already demonstrated ability to modify the friction behavior of Au-YSZ films, the LIP treatment enables local tailoring of their electrical resistivity. International audience; The design of a Soil Monitoring Network (SMN) poses numerous scientific challenges, especially for the assessment of national or continental areas. The task is particularly challenging because soil carbon content and stocks are driven by controlling factors of disparate origins and scales. Various approaches to the establishment of SMNs are reviewed here. Frameworks for soil monitoring exist in numerous countries, especially in Europe. Although some countries work using standard monitoring methodologies and coverage, there is considerable variation in approaches to the monitoring of soil carbon even within a country. In addition to achieving harmonization, there are generic issues which must be addressed when SMNs are established and operated: the SMN should be effective for different soils, and it must enable the detection of change in soil carbon at relevant spatial and temporal scales with adequate precision and statistical power. We present examples which address these issues and summarize previous reviews on this topic. It is essential to establish an adequate sampling protocol which can be applied at each sampling location and time. The design must address the questions that the user of data has and provide information with accuracy and precision at the spatial and temporal scales that match the users' needs. Furthermore, the design must match the methods of analysis so that statistical assumptions can be justified. At the global scale, the question of harmonizing sampling and analytical methods is difficult. Here, we propose the establishment of benchmark sites devoted to harmonization and inter-calibration. We present a case study from France which addresses scientific issues such as how many calibration sites are necessary and how they should be selected.

The longitudinal structure of the day-to-day variations of semidiurnal tide amplitudes is analysed based on coordinated mesosphere/lower thermosphere wind measurements at several stations during three winter campaigns. Possible excitation sources of these variations are discussed. Special attention is given to a nonlinear interaction between the semidiurnal tide and the day-to-day mean wind variations. Data processing includes the S-transform analysis which takes into account transient behaviour of secondary waves. It is shown that strong tidal modulations appear during a stratospheric warming and may be caused by aperiodic mean wind variations during this event.Key words.
