2. Population growth of Tetranychus truncatus (Acari: Tetranychidae) on different drought-tolerant potato cultivars

Tetranychus truncatus Ehara (Acari: Tetranychidae) has become one of the major phytophagous pests in China in recent years, and is found on a wide range of host plants. However, little information is available on the population performance of this arthropod pest on potatoes. In this study, we explored the population growth of T. truncatus on two drought-tolerant potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars under laboratory conditions using the age-stage, two-sex life table. Tetranychus truncatus completed its entire life history on both potato cultivars tested, Holland 15 and Longshu 10. There was no significant difference between two potato cultivars in developmental duration. Tetranychus truncatus had shorter adult longevity (20.61 days), adult female longevity (20.41 days), and total female longevity (33.66 days) on Longshu 10 than Holland 15 (21.16 days, 21.19 days, and 34.38 days, respectively). However, it exhibited a higher preadult survival rate, higher fecundity (F = 88.32 eggs per female), and relatively higher population parameters when reared on Longshu 10 than on Holland 15 (F = 75.70 eggs per female). Growth projection also showed that the population size of T. truncatus on Longshu 10 (expand 750-fold) was larger than that on Holland 15 (expand 273-fold) after 60 days. Our results demonstrate that the drought-sensitive potato variety, Holland 15, is relatively resistant to T. truncatus compared with the drought-tolerant variety, Longshu 10, and suggest that T. truncatus exhibited a trade-off between longevity and reproduction on both potato cultivars. Our findings provide information on population prediction, which may aid the management of this pest mite species of potatoes.

Doxorubicin (DOX) is a chemotherapeutic drug for a variety of malignancies, while its application is restricted by the cardiovascular toxic effects characterized by oxidative stress. Ferroptosis is a novel iron-dependent regulated cell death driven by lipid peroxidation. Our study aimed to investigate the role of Elabela (ELA) in DOX-induced oxidative stress and ferroptosis. In cultured rat aortic adventitial fibroblasts (AFs), stimulation with DOX dramatically induced cytotoxicity with reduced cell viability and migration ability, and enhanced lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity. Importantly, ELA and ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) mitigated DOX-mediated augmentation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in rat aortic AFs, accompanied by upregulated levels of Nrf2, SLC7A11, GPX4, and GSH. In addition, ELA reversed DOX-induced dysregulation of apoptosis- and inflammation-related factors including Bax, Bcl2, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL6, IL-10, and CXCL1. Intriguingly, knockdown of Krüppel-like factor 15 (KLF15) by siRNA abolished ELA-mediated alleviation of ROS production and inflammatory responses. More importanly, KLF15 siRNA impeded the beneficial roles of ELA in DOX-pretreated rat aortic AFs by suppressing the Nrf2/SLC7A11/GPX4 signaling. In conclusion, ELA prevents DOX-triggered promotion of cytotoxicity, and exerts anti-oxidative and anti-ferroptotic effects in rat aortic AFs via activation of the KLF15/GPX4 signaling, indicating a promising therapeutic value of ELA in antagonizing DOX-mediated cardiovascular abnormality and disorders.

The universal droop control (UDC) can be applied to power inverters for achieving voltage and frequency regulation, accurate proportional power sharing, without the need of knowing the type or value of the impedance. There is an increasing need for voltage and frequency regulation within predetermined ranges even under abnormal conditions, such as overloading, sensor faults, and large set-point changes, etc. In this paper, a bounded nonlinear dynamics is introduced into the UDC to ensure that the voltage and frequency can always stay within predetermined ranges under normal and abnormal conditions, up to hardware limits when current protection needs to be triggered. As a result, the proposed controller can extend the operational range of power inverters in terms of voltage and frequency regulation to cover different scenarios. More importantly, the ranges for both voltage and frequency can be chosen independently from each other. Since the original structure of the UDC is kept in the proposed controller, the properties of the UDC, such as without the need of knowing the type or value of the impedance, are well maintained. Extensive simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

9. Sirtuin 7 mitigates renal ferroptosis, fibrosis and injury in hypertensive mice by facilitating the KLF15/Nrf2 signaling

Hypertension is one of the leading causes of chronic kidney disease characterized with renal fibrosis. This study aimed to investigate roles and mechanisms of sirtuin 7 (SIRT7) in hypertensive renal injury. Mini-pumps were implanted to male C57BL/6 mice to deliver angiotensin (Ang) Ⅱ (1.5 mg/kg/d) or saline for 2 weeks. Ang Ⅱ infusion resulted in marked increases in systolic blood pressure levels, renal ferroptosis and interstitial fibrosis in hypertensive mice, concomitantly with downregulated SIRT7 and Krüppel-like factor 15 (KLF15) levels. Notably, administration of recombinant adeno-associated virus-SIRT7 or ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostatin-1 effectively mitigated Ang Ⅱ-triggered renal ferroptosis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), interstitial fibrosis, renal functional and structural injury in hypertensive mice by blunting the KIM-1/NOX4 signaling and enforcing the KLF15/Nrf2 and xCT/GPX4 signaling, respectively. In primary cultured mouse renal tubular epithelial cells (TECs), Ang Ⅱ pretreatment led to repressed SIRT7 expression and augmented ferroptosis as well as partial EMT, which were substantially antagonized by rhSIRT7 or ferrostatin-1 administration. Additionally, both Nrf2 inhibitor ML385 and KLF15 siRNA strikingly abolished the rhSIRT7-mediated beneficial roles in mouse renal TECs in response to Ang Ⅱ with reduced expression of Nrf2, xCT and GPX4. More importantly, ML385 administration remarkably amplified Ang Ⅱ-mediated ROS generation, lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis in renal TECs, which were significantly reversed by ferrostatin-1. In conclusion, SIRT7 alleviates renal ferroptosis, lipid peroxidation, and partial EMT under hypertensive status by facilitating the KLF15/Nrf2 signaling, thereby mitigating renal fibrosis, injury and dysfunction. Targeting SIRT7 signaling serves as a promising strategy for hypertension and hypertensive renal injury.

The study purpose was to examine the association between the Medial Longitudinal Arch (MLA) and balance among recreational badminton players. Materials and methods. Total of 48 recreational badminton players aged 18–40 (24 males and 24 females) were recruited. Navicular Drop Test (NDT), Single Leg Stance Balance Test (SLSBT) and Modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) were assessed on both dominant and non-dominant leg. Participant’s foot type was categorized using NDT scores according to difference of navicular height in weight bearing and relax sitting; static balance was grouped based on the time (seconds) the players were able to maintain balance during the SLSBT; and dynamic balance was grouped based on the percentage of distance reached in mSEBT. In this work, experiments and comprehensive insights into the proposed covering liquid method to intensify self-preservation effect for methane (CH4) storage are presented. The CH4 hydrate decomposition percentage was 17.6% with the pressure of 0.61 MPa after 12 h at 266.0 K without a covering liquid, which can be reduced to 12.4%, 13.8%, 13.0%, and 8.3% with the pressure of 0.26 MPa, 0.33 MPa, 0.51 MPa, and 0.37 MPa by covering with tetrahydrofuran (THF), cyclopentane (CP), cyclohexane, and n-tetradecane, respectively. When the temperature for CH4 hydrate decomposition was 274.2 K, covering with THF, CP, cyclohexane, and n-tetradecane failed to inhibit CH4 hydrate decomposition. The results suggested that the covering liquid may form a new solid layer (a hydrate layer or other solidified layer) around the CH4 hydrate, which inhibit CH4 transfer below the freezing point of water. However, the new solid layer cannot resist the fast transfer of CH4 from decomposed CH4 hydrate above the freezing point of water. The same phenomenon was also observed in a sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS)-dry solution CH4 hydrate formation system. Therefore, the covering method can only intensify the self-preservation effect below the freezing point of water, but cannot generate a self-preservation effect.

In this note, a control framework is proposed to render a power electronic system passive by adopting the port-Hamiltonian (pH) systems theory. The system has a power electronic converter, either grid-tied or islanded. The control framework consists of a lossless interconnection block and three control channels. It makes the power converter behave as a virtual synchronous machine (VSM). The three channels are designed to, respectively, generate the frequency and the flux of the VSM and a third quantity that is necessary for forming the lossless interconnection. It is proven that the closed-loop system is passive without the need of assuming constant frequency, constant voltage, and/or constant loads. It is sufficient to only assume that the load can be described with a passive pH model. Hence, the proposed control framework is very generic.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as essential regulators that could have pivotal roles in cardiac homeostasis and pathological remodeling of various cardiovascular diseases. We previously demonstrated that miRNA-122-5p overexpression exacerbated the process of vascular hypertrophy, fibrosis, and dysfunction in hypertensive rats and rat aortic adventitial fibroblasts. However, the exact roles and underlying mechanisms of miRNA-122-5p in myocardial fibroblasts remain largely unknown. In this work, neonatal rat cardiofibroblasts (CFs) were isolated and primarily cultured from the hearts of 2- to 3-d-old Sprague-Dawley rats. Stimulation of angiotensin II (Ang II) resulted in marked increases in cellular proliferation and migration and levels of collagen I, collagen III, CTGF, and TGF-β1 in cultured CFs. Furthermore, Ang II led to promoted expression of P62, Bax, and phosphorylated mTOR as well as downregulation of LC3II, beclin-1, and AMPK-phosphorylated levels, thereby contributing to imbalance of autophagy and apoptosis, and cellular injury in CFs, which were significantly ameliorated by treatment with miRNA-122-5p inhibitor. Candida albicans (C. albicans) is an opportunistic pathogenic fungus that often causes mucosal and systemic infections. Several pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and C-type lectin receptors (CLRs), have been implicated in the host recognition of C. albicans. These PRRs recognize the pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) of C. albicans to activate innate immune cells, thereby rapidly inducing various inflammatory responses by activating intracellular signaling cascades. Herbal medicine and its active components deserve priority development due to their low toxicity and high antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal activities. This review discussed the activities of herbal compounds against C. albicans and their related mechanisms, especially their regulatory role on innate immune cells such as neutrophils, macrophages, and dendritic cells (DCs) implicated in C. albicans infections. Our work aims to find new therapeutic drugs and targets to prevent and treat diseases caused by C. albicans infection with the mechanisms by which this fungus interacts with the innate immune response.

21. Leveraging a necroptosis pattern to predict the prognosis and drug sensitivity of ovarian cancer

- Abstract
Background: Ovarian cancer (OC) remains a fatal gynecological malignancy. Necroptosis may be a backup pathway that induces cell death when apoptosis is inhibited. This research aims to develop and validate an OC prognosis model based on necroptosis. Methods: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Genome Tissue Expression Consortium Project Genome (GTEx) databases were used in obtaining data on OC patients and normal ovarian tissues. Necroptosis-related genes were downloaded from the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between tumors and normal tissues were screened. COX regression analysis was used in constructing gene signature, which was further tested and validated in the TCGA and GEO cohorts. Based on risk scores and different clinical prognostic features, Nomogram was constructed to predict OS in OC patients. Then, the patients were divided into high- and low-risk groups, and differential genes were identified between the two groups. The potential biological and pathological functions of the differential genes were explored through Gene Ontology (GO) and KEGG analyses. Immunoassays were used to analyze immune status. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) further confirmed the expression levels of core prognostic genes and their correlations with overall survival (OS) rates. Drug sensitivity analysis in different risk groups was performed to screen out potential drugs for the treatment of OC. Finally, a consensus clustering analysis was used in subtyping ovarian tumors. Results: A three-gene signature was identified, including JAK1, PYGB, and STAT1. The high-risk group had lower OS than the low-risk group and the risk score was acceptable for predicting prognosis independent of any other clinical prognostic features. The Nomogram can accurately predict the 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates of patients with OC. Functional analysis revealed immune-related pathways and differences in immune status between the two risk groups. Furthermore, three core prognostic genes involved in model construction were overexpressed in OC versus those in normal ovarian tissues. Patients in the low-risk group were more sensitive to cisplatin and docetaxel. In consensus clustering analysis, OC patients were separated into two subtypes and the survival rate in cluster 1 was better than in cluster 2. Conclusion: A necroptosis-related model based on three core prognostic DEGs can be used to predict OC prognosis.

The NAC(NAM/ATAF/CUC) transcription factors are members of the largest transcriptional gene family in plants and play an essential role in the response of plants to drought stress. To identify the number and function of the NAC gene family in Carthamus tinctorius, the present study adopted bioinformatics methods to identify NAC gene family members based on the whole genome data of C. tinctorius, and analyzed their physicochemical properties, chromosomal location, phylogenetic relationship, gene structure, conserved domain, and conserved motif. Meanwhile, the real-time fluorescence-based quantitative RT-PCR(qRT-PCR) was used to analyze the transcription level of four NAC genes under drought stress in different time. The results showed that C. tinctorius contained 87 NAC genes unevenly distributed on 11 chromosomes, while no NAC gene was found on chromosome 12. The encoded proteins were 103-974 amino acids and the number of CDS ranged from 3 to 9. According to the phylogenetic relationships, 87 NAC genes were clustered into17 subfamilies. The analysis of conserved domains and motifs revealed that most of the genes contained five conserved subdomains, A-E and motif2 was the most conserved among NAC genes. The expression pattern analysis showed that the transcription levels of four NAC genes related to drought resistance were all up-regulated after drought stress treatment for different time, suggesting that these four NAC genes may be related to drought resistance of C. tinctorius. This study is expected to provide a theoretical basis for further functional analysis of NAC transcription factors in C. tinctorius and references for the cultivation of drought-tolerant C. tinctorius varieties.

High-throughput transcriptome sequencing was used to study the mechanism of Shenling Baizhu Powder(SLBZP) in the alleviation of the dextran sulfate sodium(DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis(UC) in mice. The mouse model of DDS-induced UC was treated with SLBZP by gavage. The changes in general state, disease activity index(DAI), and colon length were observed. The hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining was used to observe the pathological changes in the colon tissues of mice. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was used to determine the expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), interleukin(IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-4, and IL-10 in the serum and tissues of mice. The differentially expressed genes in the control group, the model group, and the SLBZP group were analyzed by high-throughput transcriptome sequencing, and the Gene Ontology(GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG) enrichment analyses were conducted on the differentially expressed genes. The results showed that after intragastric administration of SLBZP, the symptoms of diarrhea and bloody stool were improved, and the disease active index(DAI) score was reduced. SLBZP effectively reduced the inflammatory cell infiltration and goblet cell loss in the colonic mucosal tissue, reduced the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 in the serum and colon tissue, and increased the levels of IL-4 and IL-10 in the serum and colon tissue. There were 25 differential genes in SLBZP vs the model group, which were significantly enriched in immune response, immune system process, immunoglobulin production, and other biological processes. KEGG pathway analysis showed that the differential genes were enriched in signaling pathways such as neomycin, kanamycin, and gentamicin biosynthesis, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, primary immunodeficiency, and IgA synthesis of the intestinal immune network. This study shows that SLBZP may alleviate UC through immune regulation.

27. Effects of abiotic stresses on the expression of chitinase-like genes in Acyrthosiphon pisum

Insect chitinases play a crucial part to digest chitin in the exoskeleton during the molting process. However, research on insect chitinase related to the environmental stress response is very limited. This study was the first conducted to expression analysis of chitinase- related genes in A. pisum under abiotic stresses. Here, we identified five chitinase-like proteins (ApIDGF, ApCht3, ApCht7, ApCht10 and ApENGase), and clustered them into five groups (group II, III, V, Ⅹ, and ENGase). Developmental expression analysis revealed that the five A. pisum chitinase-related genes were expressed at whole developmental stages with different relative expression patterns. When aphids were exposed to various abiotic stresses including temperature, insecticide and the stress 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), all five chitinase genes were differentially expressed in A. pisum. The results showed that insecticide such as imidacloprid down-regulated the expression of these five Cht-related genes. Analysis of temperature stress of A. pisum chitinase suggested that ApCht7 expression was high at 10°C, which demonstrates its important role in pea aphids under low temperature. Conversely, ApCht10 was more active under high temperature stress, as it was significantly up-regulated at 30°C. Besides, 20E enhanced ApCht3 and ApCht10 expression in A. pisum, but reduced ApCht7 expression. These findings provide basic information and insights for the study of the role of these genes under abiotic stress, which advances our knowledge in the management of pea aphids under multiple stresses.

Hypertension is the leading risk factor for global mortality and morbidity and those with hypertension are more likely to develop severe symptoms in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular system, which is closely related to abnormal renin-angiotensin system and elabela/apelin-apelin receptor (APJ) axis. The elabela/apelin-APJ axis exerts essential roles in regulating blood pressure levels, vascular tone, and cardiovascular dysfunction in hypertension by counterbalancing the action of the angiotensin II/angiotensin II type 1 receptor axis and enhancing the endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase/NO signaling. Furthermore, the elabela/apelin-APJ axis demonstrates beneficial effects in cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology, including angiogenesis, cellular proliferation, fibrosis, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular remodeling and dysfunction during hypertension. More importantly, effects of the elabela/apelin-APJ axis on vascular tone may depend upon blood vessel type or various pathological conditions. Intriguingly, the broad distribution of elabela/apelin and alternative isoforms implicated its distinct functions in diverse cardiac and vascular cells and tissue types. Finally, both loss-of-function and gain-of-function approaches have defined critical roles of the elabela/apelin-APJ axis in reducing the development and severity of hypertensive diseases. Thus, targeting the elabela/apelin-APJ axis has emerged as a pre-warning biomarker and a novel therapeutic approach against progression of hypertension, and an increased understanding of cardiovascular actions of the elabela/apelin-APJ axis will help to develop effective interventions for hypertension. In this review, we focus on the physiology and biochemistry, diverse actions, and underlying mechanisms of the elabela/apelin-APJ axis, highlighting its role in hypertension and hypertensive cardiovascular injury and dysfunction, with a view to provide a prospective strategy for hypertensive disease therapy.

The exploitation of highly stable and active catalysts for the conversion of CO2 into valuable fuels is desirable but is a great challenge. Herein, we report that the incorporation of chromophores into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) could afford robust catalysts for efficient CO2 conversion. Specifically, a porous Nd(III) MOF (Nd-TTCA; TTCA3- = triphenylene-2,6,10-tricarboxylate) was constructed by incorporating one-dimensional Nd(CO2)n chains and TTCA3- ligands, which exhibits a very high stability, retaining its framework not only in the air at 300 °C for 2 h but also in boiling aqueous solutions at pH 1-12 for 7 days. More importantly, Nd-TTCA has achieved a 5-fold improvement in photocatalytic activity for reducing CO2 to HCOOH and a 10-fold improvement in catalytic activity for the cycloaddition of CO2 into cyclic carbonate in comparison to those of H3TTCA itself. This work gives a new strategy to design efficient artificial crystalline catalysts for CO2 conversion.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a malignant pulmonary vascular disease characterized by increased pulmonary vascular resistance, pulmonary vasoconstriction, and right ventricular hypertrophy. Recent developments in genomics and metabolomics have gradually revealed the roles of the gut microbiota (GM) and its metabolites in cardiovascular diseases. Accumulating evidence reveals that the GM plays important roles in the occurrence and development of PAH. Gut microbiota dysbiosis directly increases the gut permeability, thereby facilitating pathological bacterial translocation and allowing translocation of bacterial products such as lipopolysaccharides from the gut into circulation. This process aggravates pulmonary perivascular inflammation and exacerbates PAH development through the endothelial–mesenchymal transition. Additionally, a shift in the composition of PAH also affects the gut metabolites. Changes in gut metabolites, such as decreased short-chain fatty acids, increased trimethylamine N-oxide, and elevated serotonin, contribute to pulmonary perivascular inflammation and pulmonary vascular remodeling by activating several signaling pathways. Studies of the intestinal microbiota in treating pulmonary hypertension have strengthened linkages between the GM and PAH. Probiotic therapy and fecal microbiota transplantation may supplement existing PAH treatments. In this article, we provide new insight for diagnosing, preventing and treating PAH by adding to the current knowledge of the intestinal flora mechanisms and its metabolites efficacy involved in PAH.

A carbazolide- bis (NHC) Ni II catalyst (1; NHC, N -heterocyclic carbene) for selective CO 2 photoreduction was designed herein by a one-stone-two-birds strategy. The extended π-conjugation and the strong σ/π electron-donation characteristics (two birds) of the carbazolide fragment (one stone) lead to significantly enhanced activity for photoreduction of CO 2 to CO. The turnover number (TON) and turnover frequency (TOF) of 1 were ninefold and eightfold higher than those of the reported pyridinol- bis (NHC) Ni II complex at the same catalyst concentration using an identical Ir photosensitizer, respectively, with a selectivity of ∼100%. More importantly, an organic dye was applied to displace the Ir photosensitizer to develop a noble-metal-free photocatalytic system, which maintained excellent performance and obtained an outstanding quantum yield of 11.2%. Detailed investigations combining experimental and computational studies revealed the catalytic mechanism, which highlights the potential of the one-stone-two-birds effect.

Space vector modulation (SVM) strategy is widely used in two-level and three-level converters because of its advantages. However, the sector triangles, switching states, and switching sequences increase dramatically as the number of levels increases, which makes it difficult to implement the SVM algorithm in industrial applications of high-voltage and high-power multilevel converters. To extend the SVM strategy to high-voltage and high-power converters, a new SVM algorithm is proposed in this article with the 45° coordinates $\alpha ^{\prime }\beta ^{\prime }$ . In the $\alpha ^{\prime }\beta ^{\prime }$ coordinates, based on the relationship between the phase voltage and the line voltage of a star-connected converter, the reference vectors calculated from phase-voltage reference signals are directly used as line-voltage reference vectors. Moreover, two line-voltage levels are used as two components of the space vector, with the sum of these two components being the third line-voltage level. These three components are directly used as the switching state signals of the control line voltages. The proposed method avoids the 2/3 conversion that must be completed in the conventional SVM algorithm and does not need to calculate redundant switching states. It greatly simplifies the SVM algorithm and ensures that the common-mode voltage of the converter is zero. Finally, the proposed algorithm is validated with extensive experimental results.

In this brief, a bounded integral controller (BIC) with limited control power is proposed for a class of nonlinear multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The sum-of-squares constraint on the control inputs with time-varying weights is studied and handled through the BIC design, which guarantees that both the control inputs and an auxiliary time-varying variable are dynamically constrained on a designed control circle. The BIC inherits the properties of the traditional integral controller to eliminate tracking errors and achieve disturbance rejections. Even under time-varying input weights, the BIC guarantees limited control power independently of both plant information and system states. The input-to-state (practical) stability of the closed-loop system is established. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, experimental validations are conducted for two systems: a system with multiple dc motors subject to a power limit with time-varying input weights and a permanent magnet synchronous motor system subject to a voltage limit with time-invariant input weights.

39. Oviposition Preference and Age-Stage, Two-Sex Life Table Analysis of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on Different Maize Varieties

Host plants play an important role in the growth, development, and reproduction of insects. However, only a few studies have reported the effects of maize varieties on the growth and reproduction of S. frugiperda. In this study, a free-choice test was used to evaluate the oviposition preferences of female adults on ten common maize varieties and ten special maize varieties. The population fitness of S. frugiperda on six different maize varieties was also examined using the age-stage, two-sex life table method. The results showed that S. frugiperda oviposited and completed its life cycle across all maize cultivars. Moreover, the S. frugiperda females exhibited a significantly higher oviposition preference on the special maize varieties than on the common maize varieties. The highest number of eggs and egg masses occurred on Baitiannuo and the lowest on Zhengdan 958. The egg + larval stage, preadult, pupal stage, adult, APOP, TPOP, and total longevity of S. frugiperda were significantly shorter on the special maize varieties than on the common maize varieties. The fecundity, oviposition days, pupal weight, and hatching rate of S. frugiperda were significantly higher on the special maize varieties than on the common maize varieties. Specifically, S. frugiperda had the highest fecundity, female, and male pupal weight on Baitiannuo. Moreover, the net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (r), and finite rate of increase (λ) of S. frugiperda were the greatest on Baitiannuo, whereas the shortest mean generation time (T) occurred on Zaocuiwang. The lowest R0, r, and λ, and longest T occurred on Zhengdan 958, suggesting that Zhengdan 958 is a non-preferred host plant compared to the other tested maize varieties. The findings of this study can provide a reference for the rational planting of maize and provide basic scientific information for the management of S. frugiperda.

The uncertainty and disturbance estimator (UDE)-based controller has emerged as an effective robust control method to handle systems with uncertainties and disturbances. However, similar to other controllers including an integral action, the UDE-based controller faces the integral windup issue when the system has input constraints. In this article, a bounded UDE-based controller is proposed to deal with systems subject to uncertainties, disturbances, and input constraint. An additional time-varying variable is introduced into the design of the error dynamics to naturally avoid integral windup. The boundedness design guarantees that both the final controller output and the additional time-varying variable dynamically move on an ellipse so that the controller output always satisfies the input constraint. The proposed bounded UDE-based controller inherits the robustness of the conventional UDE-based control method, and has a clear structure, with guidelines provided for parameter selections. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results are provided to validate the proposed design.

Efficient generation of synthetic gas (syngas) through the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and H2O is a promising route to realize the conversion and storage of electricity. The production of syngas with a controlled CO/H2 ratio is significant for the subsequent preparation of value-added chemicals. Herein, a guest–host pyrolysis strategy is employed to synthesize Co–C/Nx-based single-site catalytic materials. The as-prepared materials possess a high graphitic degree of carbon, which supports the rapid electron transport and promotes efficient electrochemical reduction reactions. As a result, these materials can serve as excellent electrocatalysts for the production of syngas by the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and H2O, which exhibits high production rates and steady CO/H2 ratio (v : v = 1 : 2) at wide-range electrochemical windows. The faradaic efficiency reaches nearly 100%, and the formation rate reaches as high as 1.08 mol g−1 h−1 at 1.0 V vs. RHE.

This study aims to explore the effect of butyl alcohol extract of Baitouweng Decoction(BAEB) on vulvovaginal candidiasis(VVC) in mice and to clarify the mechanism from Toll-like receptors(TLRs)/MyD88 and Dectin-1/Syk signal pathways and NLRP3 inflammasome. To be specific, female KM mice were randomized into control group(i.g., normal saline), model group, fluco-nazole group(i.g., 20 mg·kg~(-1)), and low-dose, medium-dose, and high-dose BAEB groups(i.g., 20, 40, and 80 mg·kg~(-1), respectively). VVC was induced in mice except the control group. After the modeling, administration began and lasted 7 days. The ge-neral conditions and body weight of mice were recorded every day. On the 1 st, 3 rd, 7 th, and 14 th after vaginal infection by Candida albicans, the fungal load in the vaginal lavage fluid of the mice was measured with the plate method, and the morphology of C. albicans in vaginal lavage fluid was observed based on Gram staining. After the mice were killed, vaginal tissues were subjected to hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining and periodic acid-Schiff(PAS) staining for vaginal histopathological analysis. The content of cytokines in vaginal lavage fluid, such as interleukin(IL)-1β, IL-18, tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), IL-6, and S100 a8, was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA), and content of reactive oxygen species(ROS) in vaginal tissues by tissue ROS detection kit. The protein expression of NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, Dectin-1, Syk, MyD88, TLR2, TLR4, and nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB) in vaginal tissues was detected by Western blot, and the levels and distribution of NLRP3, Dectin-1, Syk, MyD88, TLR2, and TLR4 in vaginal tissues were determined with the immunohistochemical method. The results show that BAEB can improve the general conditions of VVC mice, reduce the fungal load and C. albicans hyphae in vaginal secretion, decrease ROS content in vaginal tissues and content of cytokines in vaginal lavage fluid, and down-regulate the expression of NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, Dectin-1, Syk, MyD88, TLR2, TLR4, and NF-κB in vaginal tissues. The above results indicate that BAEB exerts therapeutic effect on VVC mice by down-regulating the key proteins in the TLRs/MyD88 and Dectin-1/Syk signal pathways and NLRP3 inflammasome.

Desalination by freezing/thawing method was a very important method to obtain fresh water from sea water. In this work, desalination by freezing/thawing method was conducted with initial sodium chloride of 3.5 wt% in consideration of stirring speed, freezing time and subcooling. The subcooling ranged from 1.2 K to 4 K. The optimum conditions for desalination in this work were stirring speed of 200 r·min−1, freezing time of 120 min, and subcooling of 3 K. The results also showed that sodium chloride cannot be effectively removed by once freezing/thawing process. The maximum removal efficiency of sodium chloride was 64.3%. Two major reasons resulting in the impurity of obtained melted water by freezing/thawing method were proposed. The first reason was the inevitable adhesion of salt solution to the surface of ice, which could be removed easily by distilled water flushing. The second reason was that salt solution was heterogeneously wrapped in the accumulated ice, which was difficult to be removed by distilled water flushing. The liquid flushing method was proposed to verify the conjecture, and the results were in accordance with the two reasons mentioned above. Additional method, such as multiple flushing liquid method, was suggested to be used during the freezing/thawing process for effectively removing sodium chloride, and obtaining fresh water.

It is common that different crystal facets in metal and metal oxide nanocrystals display different catalytic performances, whereas such phenomena have been rarely documented in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, we demonstrate for the first time that a nickel metal-organic layer (MOL) exposing rich (100) crystal facets (Ni-MOL-100) shows a much higher photocatalytic CO2 -to-CO activity than the one exposing rich (010) crystal facets (Ni-MOL-010) and its bulky counterpart (bulky Ni-MOF), with a catalytic activity up to 2.5 and 4.6 times more active than Ni-MOL-010 and bulky Ni-MOF, respectively. Theoretical studies reveal that the two coordinatively unsaturated NiII ions with a close distance of 3.50 A on the surface of Ni-MOL-100 enables synergistic catalysis, leading to more favorable energetics in CO2 reduction than that of Ni-MOL-010.

Distributed generation (DG) inverters can operate in the islanded mode and the grid-connected mode. When these DG inverters operate in the islanded mode, they often form a microgrid. The magnitude and phase of the main grid voltage deviate from the microgrid voltage. If the microgrid is connected to the main grid under such condition, it results in a high transient overcurrent which is harmful to the system. This paper presents a new, simple and effective resynchronization mechanism for the universal droop control (UDC) DG inverters to achieve a seamless transfer from the islanded mode to the grid-connected mode. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The result shows that the high transient overcurrent can be avoided and a seamless connection/reconnection to the main grid can be achieved. In this article, an uncertainty and disturbance estimator (UDE)-based robust output feedback control technique without using a state observer is proposed for a general class of nonlinear single-input single-output systems that are bounded-input bounded-output stable and subject to input and output disturbances. Instead of designing a controller for the original system directly, an equivalent system consisting of a first-order linear system plus a lumped uncertainty term is used to represent the input–output relationship. Then, a UDE-based robust controller is designed only using the system output feedback and the bandwidth of the open-loop system, making the design almost modeling-free. A prominent advantage of the proposed approach is that it has converted a challenging robust control problem into an intuitive filter design problem. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated on an experimental piezoelectric stage in the presence of hysteresis nonlinearity.

Cervical cancer (CC) seriously threatens the health of women. Radiation therapy (RT) is the major treatment for CC. However, the recurrent CC can acquire resistance to RT. Thus, it is necessary to find a new method for reversing RT resistance in CC. It has been reported that microRNA-324-5p (miR-324-5p) can suppress the progression of multiple cancers. However, whether it can reverse resistance to RT in CC remains unclear. qRT-PCR and Western blotting were used to detect gene and protein expression in CC cells, respectively. Cell proliferation was tested by CCK-8 assay and colony formation assay. In addition, cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. Transwell assays were performed to detect cell migration. Dual luciferase reporter assay and TargetScan were used to explore the targets of miR-324-5p. MiR-324-5p was downregulated in CC cells. Overexpression of miR-324-5p sensitized CC cells to RT. In addition, miR-324-5p mimics significantly induced apoptosis and inhibits the migration of CC cells in the presence of 137 Cs ionizing radiation. Furthermore, miR-324-5p sensitized CC cells to ionizing radiation by targeting ELAV-like RNA binding protein 1 (ELAVL1). MiR-324-5p overexpression affects the radiotherapy response of CC by targeting ELAVL1, which may serve as a new target for the treatment of CC.
