Capsule Golden Eagles Aquila chrysaetos in Sardinia are clustered across the main mountain ranges of the island, with a preference for undisturbed and homogeneous inland habitats. Aims To analyse habitat preferences of the Golden Eagle in Sardinia, Italy, at the landscape and home range spatial scales. Methods Landscape scale habitat preferences were analysed using the 10 × 10 km Universal Transverse Mercator grid and the home range scale was based on the spatial distribution of breeding territories. Generalized linear models were fitted with three different sets of environmental predictors (topographic, bioclimatic and land use variables) to analyse the spatial distribution of Golden Eagles with a case-control design. Results Eagles showed a preference for rugged and elevated areas, characterized by a certain degree of humidity and surrounded by areas of forest. The distribution of Golden Eagles on this Mediterranean island was negatively affected by the occurrence of arable farmland and coastal areas, as well as by the effects of habitat fragmentation. Conclusions The results of this study could contribute to future management strategies and conservation projects aimed to protect this species, and may be used to identify the most suitable conservation areas for this and other competing species, such as the Bonelli's Eagle Aquila fasciata, which is currently the subject of a reintroduction project in Sardinia.

Electron internal transport barriers (eITBs) are obtained in TCV with different heating and current drive schemes. They are sustained in steady-state conditions for several energy confinement and current redistribution times. In these scenarios, the density profile displays a different behaviour with respect to normal L-mode plasmas, with or without auxiliary heating. In fully non-inductive discharges developing an eITB, the density profile shape is strongly correlated with the electron temperature profile, with the normalized density gradient equal to 0.45 times the normalized temperature gradient, revealing the existence of a significant inward pinch of a thermodiffusive type. The coupling of the two profiles is observed from the 'foot' of the barrier inwards. The effect of small inductive current perturbations on fully non-inductive sustained eITBs shows that ∇n/n is only indirectly coupled to the current profile, through its effect on local confinement, contrary to the standard L-mode.

The rapid formation of an electron internal transport barrier (eITB) is observed during a slow evolution (similar or equal to 200 ms) from a centrally peaked to a hollow current density profile, while all external actuators remain constant. The time constant for the barrier formation appears to be shorter than the electron energy confinement time. The improved confinement associated with the barrier formation occurs first in a localized region off-axis. Then the effects propagate to inner and outer flux surfaces on a confinement time scale. The temporal and spatial localizations of the barrier formation suggest a threshold in the magnetic shear profile that triggers the onset of the eITB. The threshold-like behaviour can be attributed to the sudden appearance of a minimum q (or zero-shear) flux surface in the safety factor profile. Based on modelling of the current profile evolution using the ASTRA transport code, the appearance of the zero-shear flux surface is correlated with the temporal and spatial formation of the barrier.

Coping strategies mediate the relationship between challenging situations and their impact on psychosocial outcomes. Many long-term cancer survivors continue to face a range of challenges in their daily lives, yet little is known about how this population copes. The study explored the prevalence and predictors of cancer-specific coping strategies among a heterogeneous sample of long-term cancer survivors.A population-based cross-sectional sample of 863 adult cancer survivors 5-6 years post-diagnosis completed a pen-and-paper survey. Cancer-specific coping was assessed via the Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer (mini-MAC) Scale. Potential predictor variables included patient, disease and treatment characteristics and social support.The most commonly used coping strategies were fatalism and fighting spirit. Of those survivors that used any of the coping strategies assessed, 53% used at least two strategies. Maladaptive coping was commonly predicted by low social support (OR = 1.77 to 2.49) and being a disability pensioner, whereas having ever received chemotherapy widely predicted greater use of all types of coping. A weekly household income of over $1000 a week uniquely predicted not using any mini-MAC coping strategies.Survivors continue to engage in cancer-specific coping strategies many years after diagnosis, albeit to a lesser extent than recent survivor populations. A number of predictors were identified that can alert health workers to long-term survivors at increased risk of maladaptive coping. Given that low social support consistently predicted maladaptive coping responses, interventions aimed at promoting positive coping responses should include strategies to increase access to social support.

We describe the soils and landscapes studied in the area of the Sella e Mosca vineyard farm (Alghero, north-western Sardinia). In the study area the original soils and land use have been deeply modified, creating a new landscape and anthropogenic soils.

Central muscle relaxants are a clinical option in patients with spastic palsy. Eperisone is a central muscle relaxant used in several conditions, but its therapeutic potential in spastic palsy needs to be verified. This dose-ranging trial compares two doses of eperisone in patients with spastic palsy associated to cerebral or spinal diseases.In this randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, three-way cross-over study, patients (18-75 years) with spastic palsy received eperisone 150 mg/day, eperisone 300 mg/day, or placebo for 8 weeks. Treatment periods lasted for 14 days. Objective clinical parameters (intensity of spasticity and physiological reflexes) and functional parameters (walking capability, capability to climb stairs, rigidity) were measured. Tolerability was also evaluated.Eighteen patients were enrolled. The reduction in the intensity of spasticity versus the beginning of each treatment cycle was significant with eperisone 300 mg/day (p = 0.004). Similar findings were observed in the evaluation of patellar reflex (p = 0.01), while the other reflexes were not significantly different. Walking capability was significantly improved with eperisone 300 mg/day (p0.05). No significant differences were observed in the capability to climb stairs and in rigidity. A trend towards a reduction in pain was noted with eperisone 300 mg/day versus placebo. The incidence of adverse events was similar in all groups.Eperisone 300 mg/day might be an effective and well-tolerated treatment for spastic palsy. Larger studies are required to further characterize the efficacy of eperisone in this therapeutic area.

This Paper reviews the design and functionality of the 24MW 170GHz electron cyclotron heating and current drive system being planned for the ITER Tokamak. The sub-systems (power supplies, gyrotrons, transmission lines and launcher antennas) are described based on present day technologies, while on-going R&D provides component and sub-system testing with the possibility of increasing the reliability of the overall EC system. Modifications to the steering ranges of the launching antennas are under investigation that can improve the functional capabilities of the EC system without increasing cost and relaxing the engineering constraints.

The DesertWatch ESA DUE project, recently successfully completed, aimed at developing an integrated information system tailored on the specific user needs, built on the technological transfer of the most significant results of the related research projects. The resulting DesertWatch Information System, a user-friendly integrated Software remote sensing tool for monitoring desertification, have being installed and is now used in Italy, Turkey and Portugal.

The challenge of developing the conceptual design of the ECH Upper Launcher system for MHD control in the ITER plasmas has been tackled by team of European Associations together with the European Domestic Agency ("F4E"). The launcher system has to meet the following requirements: (a) a mm-wave system extending from the interface to the transmission line up to the target absorption zone in the plasma and performing as an intelligent antenna; (b) a structural system integrating the mm-wave system and ensuring sufficient thermal and nuclear shielding; (C) port Plug remote handling and testing capability ensuring high Port plug system availability. The paper describes the reference launcher design. The mm-wave system is composed of waveguide and quasi-optical sections with a front steering system. An automated feedback control system is developed as a concept based on an assimilation procedure between predicted and diagnosed absorption location. The structural system consists of the blanket shield module, the port plug frame, and the internal shield for appropriate neutron shielding towards the launcher back-end. The specific advantages of a double walled structure are discussed with respect to adequate baking, to rigidity towards launcher deflection under plasma-generated loads and to removal of thermal loads, including nuclear ones. Basic Studies of remote handling (RH) to validate design development are initiated using a virtual reality simulation backed by experimental validation, for which a launcher handling test facility (LHT) is set LIP as a full scale experimental site allowing furthermore thermohydraulic studies with ITER blanket water parameters. The single dose pharmacokinetics of orally administered nimodipine (60 mg) were investigated in normal subjects and in two groups of epileptic patients receiving chronic treatment with hepatic microsomal enzyme-inducing anticonvulsants (carbamazepine, phenobarbitone or phenytoin) and sodium valproate, respectively. 2. Compared with the values found in the control group, mean areas under the plasma nimodipine concentration curve were lowered by about seven-fold (P less than 0.01) in patients taking enzyme-inducing anticonvulsants and increased by about 50% (P less than 0.05) in patients taking sodium valproate. 3. Nimodipine half-lives were shorter in enzyme-induced patients than in controls (3.9 +/- 2.0 h vs 9.1 +/- 3.4 h, means +/- s.d., P less than 0.01), but this difference could be artifactual since in the patients drug concentrations declined rapidly below the limit of assay, thus preventing identification of a possible slower terminal phase. In valproate-treated patients, half-lives (8.2 +/- 1.8 h) were similar to those found in controls.

The effect of the predicted local electron cyclotron current driven by the optimized electron cyclotron system on ITER is discussed. A design variant was recently proposed to enlarge the physics program covered by the upper and equatorial launchers. By extending the functionality range of the upper launcher, significant control capabilities of the sawtooth period can be obtained. The upper launcher improvement still allows enough margin to exceed the requirements for neoclassical tearing mode stabilization, for which it was originally designed. The analysis of the sawtooth control is carried on with the ASTRA transport code, coupled with the threshold model by Por-celli, to study the control capabilities of the improved upper launcher on the sawtooth instability. The simulations take into account the significant stabilizing effect of the fusion alpha particles. The sawtooth period can be increased by a factor of 1.5 with co-ECCD outside the q = 1 surface, and decreased by at least 30% with co-ECCD inside q = 1. The present ITER base-line design has the electron cyclotron launchers providing only co-ECCD. The variant for the equatorial launcher proposes the possibility to drive counter-ECCD with 1 of the 3 rows of mirrors: the counter-ECCD can then be balanced with co-ECCD and provide pure ECH with no net driven current. The difference between full co-ECCD off-axis using all 20MW from the equatorial launcher and 20MW co-ECCD driven by 2/3 from the equatorial launcher and 1/3 from the upper launcher is shown to be negligible. Cnt-ECCD also offers greater control of the plasma current density, therefore this analysis addresses the performance of the equatorial launcher to control the central q profile. The equatorial launcher is shown to control very efficiently the value of q0.2-qmin in advanced scenarios, if one row provides counter-ECCD.

Previous results from the analysis of fully non inductively sustained electron internal transport barriers (eITBs) in TCV show that a strong coupling exists between electron temperature and density profiles inside the barrier. A phenomenology that is completely different from the standard L‐mode is observed . New experimental results assess transient phases to calculate particle convection and diffusion coefficients, allowing also to discuss the role of neoclassical transport. Gyrokinetic and gyrofluid analysis of steady‐state eITBs provide tools to understand the mechanism that drive the observed density peaking in advanced scenarios with internal transport barriers and dominant electron heating.

The X2 ECH antennas on TCV are used to sustain and tailor the plasma current profile, forming either a centrally peaked or hollow profile. During the transition from peaked to hollow profile, an eITB is observed to form rapidly and in a localized region, which correlates with the appearance of a zero shear flux surface off‐axis according to the ASTRA transport code. The barrier position can be controlled via the co‐ECCD off‐axis deposition location, and the barrier strength with central heating or counter‐ECCD (increasing the depth of the hollow current profile), achieving H‐factors of up to ⩽6. In these discharges, the current in the ohmic transformer coil is held constant to avoid an inductively driven current contribution. After the eITB is created, a small amount of ohmically driven counter (co‐) current has been added as a perturbative current source, transfering only a few kW of ohmic power compared to 1.4MW of ECCD. Improved electron energy confinement in tokamak plasmas, related to internal transport barriers, has been linked to nonmonotonic current density profiles. This is difficult to prove experimentally since usually the current profiles evolve continuously and current injection generally requires significant input power. New experiments are presented, in which the inductive current is used to generate positive and negative current density perturbations in the plasma center, with negligible input power. These results demonstrate unambiguously for the first time that the electron confinement can be modified significantly solely by perturbing the current density profile.

13MW of electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) power deposited inside the q = 1 surface is likely to reduce the sawtooth period in ITER baseline scenario below the level empirically predicted to trigger neo-classical tearing modes (NTMs). However, since the ECCD control scheme is solely predicated upon changing the local magnetic shear, it is prudent to plan to use a complementary scheme which directly decreases the potential energy of the kink mode in order to reduce the sawtooth period. In the event that the natural sawtooth period is longer than expected, due to enhanced alpha particle stabilisation for instance, this ancillary sawtooth control can be provided from > 10MW of ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) power with a resonance just inside the q = 1 surface. Both ECCD and ICRH control schemes would benefit greatly from active feedback of the deposition with respect to the rational surface. If the q = 1 surface can be maintained closer to the magnetic axis, the efficacy of ECCD and ICRH schemes significantly increases, the negative effect on the fusion gain is reduced, and off-axis negative-ion neutral beam injection (NNBI) can also be considered for sawtooth control. Consequently, schemes to reduce the q = 1 radius are highly desirable, such as early heating to delay the current penetration and, of course, active sawtooth destabilisation to mediate small frequent sawteeth and retain a small q = 1 radius., 29 pages, 16 figures

A mortality cohort study (1951-1988) was conducted on 526 female workers in two lead and zinc mines in southwestern Sardinia (Italy), 310 of whom had been exposed to silica. Women exposed to silica showed a nonsignificant 38% increase in the standardized mortality ratio (SMR) for nonmalignant respiratory diseases, which was highest and statistically significant among women at the mine with the highest exposure to silica (SMR = 217; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 104, 400; based on 10 observed and 4.6 expected deaths). Five deaths from lung cancer also occurred among those exposed to silica (SMR = 283; 95% CI = 91,660), but the excess was not related to the level or duration of exposure. No information was available concerning lifestyle risk factors in this cohort. However, smoking was quite rare among Sardinian women at the time cohort members worked, so it may be presumed that very few of them were smokers.

Starting from a standard single null X-point configuration, a second order null divertor (snowflake (SF)) has been successfully created on the Tokamak Configuration Variable (TCV) tokamak. The magnetic properties of this innovative configuration have been analysed and compared with a standard X-point configuration. For the SF divertor, the connection length and the flux expansion close to the separatrix exceed those of the standard X-point by more than a factor of 2. Ten patients with dystrophia myotonica (8 adults and 2 prepubertal children), from three unrelated families, were investigated for diurnal sleepiness, using a sleep questionnaire and multiple sleep latency test (MSLT). Immunogenetic study was also carried out to assess the involvement of HLA region genes in modulating susceptibility to excessive diurnal sleepiness (EDS). EDS was reported by 5 patients and confirmed in each case by MSLT. In the whole patients group, mean daytime sleep latency was significantly shorter than in healthy controls matched for age and sex. At clinical or neurophysiological evaluation, EDS did not show the features associated with the narcoleptic type. In only one case hypersomnolence could be explained by underlying sleep-disordered breathing. HLA patterns were different from those frequently observed in the narcoleptic or non-narcoleptic types of hypersomnia. In patients with EDS, the frequency of the DQW1 and particularly of the DRW6-DQW1 haplotype appeared to be over-represented.

A multiparametric investigation of daytime sleepiness was performed in 18 healthy young university students. After undergoing a standard polysomnographic recording at home the night before, all subjects were evaluated by Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) at 10.00, 12.00, 14.00, 16.00, 18.00. Subjective sleepiness (by using Visual Analogue Rating Scale) and performance tasks (Cancellation Test, Digit Symbol Substitution, Choice Reaction Time, Critical Flicker Fusion Threshold) were also assessed at the same times. Mean daily sleep latency was found to be about 10 minutes, with several individual values in the borderline range (greater than 5 less than 10 minutes). Subjects did not rate themselves as excessively sleepy and there was no correlation between subjective and objective estimates of sleepiness. No consistent correlation was found between subjective-objective sleepiness and results of performance tests. Anxiety trait (Spielberg State Anxiety Trait) did not correlate with sleepiness, but higher anxiety scores were significantly associated with poor performance. These results confirm the occurrence of fairly marked objective drowsiness in healthy young subjects which, however, was not associated with subjective sleepiness and did not adversely affect performance on a variety of tests of CNS function.

The comparative pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of single oral doses of eterobarbital (N,N'-dimethoxymethylphenobarbital, DMMP, 400 mg) and phenobarbital (200 mg) were evaluated in a double-blind study in 8 normal volunteers. Following administration of DMMP, no unchanged drug could be detected in serum. The active monomethoxymethyl metabolite (MMP) appeared rapidly in the circulation but its concentration remained generally low and declined below the limit of detection (0.5 micrograms/ml) usually before 9.5 h. Serum levels of DMMP-derived PB increased slowly and reached a peak between 24 and 48 h in most cases. One subject showed an atypical pharmacokinetic profile, characterized by relatively high levels of MMP and a delayed appearance of low levels of PB. After administration of PB, serum drug levels peaked within 1.5 h and remained, at all sampling times, higher than those observed after intake of DMMP. Compared with DMMP, PB induced greater sedative effects as assessed by visual analogue rating scale, critical flicker fusion frequency and multiple sleep latency tests.

In the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) (Hofmann F et al1994 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 36 B277), global plasma oscillations have been discovered in fully non-inductively driven plasmas featuring electron internal transport barriers (ITB) with strong ECRH/ECCD. These oscillations are linked to the destabilization and stabilization of MHD modes near the foot of the ITB and can lead to large oscillations of the total plasma current and line-averaged density, among others. They are intrinsically related to the fact that ITBs have large pressure gradients in a region of low magnetic shear. Therefore, the ideal MHD limit is relatively low and infernal modes can be unstable. Depending on the proximity to the ideal limit, small crashes or resistive modes can appear which affect the time evolution of the discharge. Being near marginal stability, the modes can self-stabilize due to the modification of the pressure gradient and local q-profile. The plasma recovers good confinement, reverses shear and the ITB builds up, until a new MHD mode is destabilized. TCV results show that this cycling behaviour can be controlled by modifying the current density or the pressure profiles, either with Ohmic current density perturbation or by modifying the ECH/ECCD power. It is demonstrated that many observations such as q ≥ 2 sawteeth, beta collapses, minor disruptions and oscillation regimes in ITBs can be assigned to the same physics origin: the proximity to the infernal mode stability limit.

Important ingredients of the advanced-tokamak route to fusion have been explored in depth in the Tokamak a Configuration Variable [F. Hofmann, J. B. Lister, M. Anton , Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 36, B277 (1994)] over the past two years. Using a uniquely powerful and flexible electron-cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) system as the primary actuator, fully noninductive, steady-state electron internal transport barrier discharges have been generated with an electron-energy confinement time up to five times longer than in L mode, poloidal beta up to 2.4, and bootstrap fraction up to 75%. Interpretative transport modeling confirms that the safety factor profile is nonmonotonic in these discharges. The formation of the barrier is a discrete event resulting in rapid and localized confinement improvement consistent with the time and location of magnetic-shear reversal. In steady state, however, the confinement quality appears to depend on the current gradient in a broader negative-shear region enclosed by the barrier, improving with increasing shear: in particular, the width and depth of the barrier can be controlled and finely tuned, along a magnetohydrodynamic-stable path, by manipulating the current profile with ECRH (six independently steerable 0.45 MW launchers). The crucial role of the current profile has been clearly demonstrated by applying small Ohmic current perturbations which dramatically alter the properties of the barrier, enhancing or reducing the confinement with negative and positive current, respectively, with negligible Ohmic heating. These results are in agreement with theoretical estimates: first-principle-based numerical simulations of microinstability dynamics and turbulence-driven transport predict a substantial suppression of turbulence and anomalous energy diffusivity near the location of the minimum in the safety factor. The effects of competitive (2-amino-phosphonovaleric acid) and noncompetitive (Mg2+, ketamine, kynurenic acid) antagonists of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors on synaptic transmission were studied in afferent synapses of the frog semicircular canals. All of these antagonists reduced the rate of background activity in the nerve of posterior semicircular canal by 30–50%, which confirms the presence of glutamate NMDA receptors in the hair cell synapses in the frog semicircular canals.

The relationship between the serum concentration of phenobarbital and its pharmacodynamic effects was assessed in a double-blind controlled study in eight normal volunteers who were given single oral doses of phenobarbital (200 mg) and placebo according to a randomized cross-over design. Compared with the placebo session, phenobarbital was found to induced CNS-depressing effects as assessed by visual analogue rating scales (VARS) and critical flicker fusion tests (CFF), whereas no significant effects were detected on choice reaction times, tappings, and digit symbol substitutions. There was a clear-cut dissociation between the time course of serum phenobarbital levels, which remained at a plateau throughout most of the period of observation (up to 72 h) and its subjective (VARS) and objective (CFF) effects, which could be documented only for up to 9 h after administration. These data suggest that pharmacodynamic tolerance develops rapidly even after a single oral dose of the drug. Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLTs) were also performed in the same subjects and showed that phenobarbital increases diurnal drowsiness and attenuates the circadian variation in drowsy state that is seen under control conditions. MLSTs appeared to be superior to other tests in documenting the sedative effects of the barbiturate.

Research was conducted in 39 cases of urinary infections caused by Pseudomonas Aeruginosa in patients in various hospital wards. The aim was to assess the onset of such opportunistic infections in the hospital environment as reported earlier by other authors. A comparison was then made between the most commonly used antibacterial drugs used to combat such infections assessing their percentage efficacy on the basis of the germs' resistance to the drug.

The non-penalization envisaged by the new law concerning the use and possession of drugs, will not cause the population of drug addicts to disappear from the prisons; it is however to be expected a qualitative modification of them, with the drug addicts clinically in most serious and persistent conditions and more involved with the criminal subculture, gradually increasing in number. Such individuals will represent a group of potential customers much different from that found up to now, and their more meaningful features will concern their age (higher), polytoxicomania (almost always resulting in heroinism), the abandonment of all family ties, of the pristine social and cultural status, of work, to acquire a new role, where identity is extremely ambiguous and uncertain. As concerns the treatment hypotheses, the less involved users being no longer dealth with--upon whom the attention of operators had been chiefly centered, and on whom the prospects of a psychotherapeutic success had been founded--only two solutions are regarded as implementable in the future: either to give up all intramural treatments, with the exception of those having a medical character, and, extramurally, to provide for the supply (controlled and through dispensaries) of heroin or substitute drugs, so as to reduce as much as possible the danger drug addicts represent for society; or to establish therapeutic or intramural communities, forming the one instrument capable of suggesting or conditioning new identity patterns, as an initial stage of an analogous institutional treatment to be continued when the convict leaves the prison.

Simulations of the plasma current density evolution in electron internal transport barrier discharges on the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) have been performed, in order to determine the relationship between the safety-factor profile and the electron transport improvement. The results show that the formation of the transport barrier is correlated with the shear reversal in all cases studied, regardless of the different heating and current drive schemes. No indications were found of discrete effects related to low-order rational q surfaces. On the contrary, the increase in confinement along with the negative shear is gradual, but constant, indicating that the transition is smooth, although it can be very fast.

The ITER ECH heating and current drive system delivers 24 MW (170 GHz), which can be directed to either the equatorial (EL) or upper (UL) port launching antennas depending on the desired physics application. The UL design uses two front steering (FS) mirrors that sweep eight beams in a poloidal plane providing co-ECCD over the outer half of the plasma cross section. A novel frictionless, backlash-free steering mechanism has been developed for an increased reliability and providing a steering mirror rotation of up to ±7° (±14° for RF beam). The principle aim of the UL is to stabilize the neoclassical tearing modes (NTM) and (by extending the steering range) access the q=1 flux surface for control of the sawtooth oscillation. Increasing the range of the UL can relax the EL steering range, and optimize the EL for enhanced performance with an optimized central deposition and potential for counter ECCD. This paper will summarize the present UL design status along with the proposed design modifications to the UL for enhanced performance and increased reliability. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.
