Bioadhesives derived from biomass are steadily gaining spotlight as substitutes for formaldehyde-based resins in the adhesive industry. However, there is a need to develop novel water-resistant bioadhesives with high adhesive and cohesive strengths because the currently available biomaterial-based adhesives have low mechanical strength. In this study, a complex coacervate was prepared easily by mixing silk fibroin and tannic acid to produce a bioadhesive with high adhesive and cohesive strengths as well as water resistance. The silk fibroin-tannic acid coacervate adhered well to various substrates, and its adhesive strength according to the type of substrate and water contact angle were evaluated comparatively. In particular, the adhesive strength of this adhesive on a wood substrate was systematically analyzed by varying different experimental parameters (relative humidity, surface roughness of the substrate, water stability, and pH). This cost-effective coacervate is applicable as an eco-friendly wood adhesive.

Anaerobic digestion of organic waste results in production of biogas and a nutrient-rich digestate that has an established use as fertilizer in plant production. This study evaluated use of anaerobic digestate based on a high concentration of organic household waste as a fertilizer in sawdust-based production of oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus). Inclusion of 0.5 L of anaerobic digestate (AD) per kg sawdust gave similar productivity in terms of biological efficiency (79.5 +/- 5.4 %), and protein concentration (24.7 +/- 2.4 % of dry weight (dw)) as standard mushroom substrate (78.1 +/- 5.3 %, and 21.9 +/- 3.0 % of dw, respectively). However, mushroom growth was impaired at the highest concentration of anaerobic digestate tested, 1 L digestate per kg dw sawdust. Comparison of the AD-fertilized substrate with a mushroom substrate with standard components (sawdust, wheat bran, calcium sulfate) and with similar C/N-ratio revealed some differences in elemental composition of the fruiting bodies, with an major increase in sodium concentration for the AD-fertilized substrate compared with the standard substrate (413.3 +/- 28.9 and 226.7 +/- 30.6 mg kg(-1) dw, respectively). This difference can be explained by high sodium concentration in the anaerobic digestate, most likely due to inclusion of food scraps from households and restaurants in the biodigester feedstock. Screening of both substrates for a total of 133 micro -pollutants revealed that total sum of micropollutants was significantly higher in the AD-fertilized substrate (258 +/- 12 ng/g dw substrate) than in the standard substrate (191 +/- 35 ng/g dw substrate). Nitrogen losses during preparation of the AD-fertilized substrate were negligible.

As a renewable biological macromolecule with aromatic structure, lignin can serve as matrix substance to maintain cell wall integrity and is regarded as the natural biomass recalcitrance. Substantial differences in the cell wall lignin topochemistry between opposite (Ow) and compression wood (Cw) trachieds in Pinus bungeana Zucc. were visualized during [Emim][OAc] pretreatment at room temperature. The ionic liqiuds treatment induced a more obvious wall swelling for highly lignified Cw tracheids than that of Ow, while dynamic Raman spectra analysis indicated the higher lignin and carbohydrates removal for Ow tracheids. Raman imaging further revealed that both lignin and carbohydrates were dissolved simultaneously within the middle lamella and secondary wall of Ow and pretreatment has little effects on Cw tracheids wall. Moreover, it was demonstrated that lignin composition was the key factor to affect the composition dissolution. In particular, lignin G-units were selectively removed from cell corner middle lamella (52.3 %) and secondary wall (62.0 %) of Ow tracheids. When cotton fiber, as a reference was treated under the same conditions, lattice conversion moving from cellulose I to II occurred. The findings confirmed the important role of lignin compostion in the dissolution behavior of carbohydrate dominant tracheids wall.

Sustainable biomass resources are favored by researchers on account of their biodegradability and biocompatibility, which is a replacement for non-renewable fossil fuels. The development of low-carbon, green, and high-value bio-based adhesives are the inevitable trend of the industry development. However, the main factors limiting their application are poor water resistance and low bonding performance. Herein, the crosslinking network was constructed based on the reaction between the epoxy groups of trimethylolpropane glycidyl ether (TMPEG) and the amino groups of the synthesized aminated cellulose (AC) to form an interlocking bond. Here, water-suspended smoke particulate matter preparations (SPs) were synthesized from birch, pine, poplar wood, and also birch bark and pine needles. Biomass-based adhesives are considered to be the preferred alternative to formaldehyde-type wood adhesives due to their wide range of sources, low cost, and sustainability. Herein, an environmentally friendly Schiff base cross-linked compact three-dimensional network structure bio-adhesive (DAC-PEI-U) derived from polyethyleneimine (PEI), urea, and cellulose was successfully prepared, verifying by detailed FTIR, NMR, and XPS analysis. Schiff base bridging between aldehyde groups in dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) and amino groups in polyurea (PEIU) not only constructed crosslinking networks but also endowed adhesives with good adhesion property. The dry bond strength of DAC-PEI-U adhesive reached 2.71 MPa, and the wet shear strength was 1.51 MPa (hot water) and 1.34 MPa (boiling water), respectively. It not only improves the water resistance and bonding process, but also displays simple synthesis and low cost. The improved performance of DAC-PEI-U adhesive is attributed to the generation of hyperbranched cross-linking structure in the adhesive system, which results in increased cross-linking density and promotes the formation of dense cross-sections in the curing adhesive. This work paves a solid way for developing cellulose-based wood adhesives with wet bonding properties, thus holding great potential as an alternative to formaldehyde-type adhesives in wood-based panel and indoor panel bonding industries.

The current study investigates for the first time the physico-chemical performances of lignins from cactus waste seeds (CWS) and spent coffee (SC) in comparison to previously isolated lignins from sugar byproducts (bagasse (SCB) and beet pulp (SBP)). In this work, lignin-phenol formaldehyde (LPF) resins were formulated using various lignin loadings (5-30 wt%), characterized and applied in the manufacturing of plywood panels. Several characterization techniques were applied to identify the chemical and morphological properties, thermal stability, and phenolic content of the extracted lignins, as well as the bonding strength and wood failure of the formulated resins. Results showed that the CWS and SC could be considered as an important source for lignin recovery with a considerable yield of 15.46 % and 27.08 % and an important hydroxyl phenolic content of 1.26 mmol/g and 1.36 mmol/g for CWS and SC, respectively. Interestingly, 20 wt% of extracted lignins in PF adhesives were the optimal formulation showing an improved modulus of elasticity (MOE) of about 3505, 3536 and 3515 N/mm

The cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were produced from spruce wood using less hazardous and toxic reagents with understanding of influence of process parameters on CNCs properties. This study employed acetosolv pulping followed by alkaline-peroxide bleaching, eliminating highly reactive chemicals such as Na-chlorites and Na-sulfite for cellulose pulp extraction from spruce wood. Cellulose pulp yield of 41.5 ± 0.7 wt% of dry wood was obtained from pulping followed by bleaching treatment. Cellulose pulp was hydrolyzed with 59.0-65.0 wt% sulfuric acid followed by ultrasonic treatment to produce CNCs. CNCs yield of 8.0 ± 3.2 wt% of dry wood was obtained at 65 wt% acid concentration and yield of 25.1 ± 0.7 wt% at 62 wt% acid concentration. The optimization of acid hydrolysis and ultrasonic treatment resulted in CNCs with high aspect ratios (length/width) up to 48.1. It was demonstrated that higher acid concentration requires lower intensity of ultrasonic treatment for CNCs dispersion, and that higher intensity could enhance aspect ratio without impacting the crystallinity index. However, ultrasonic treatment for longer than 5 min led to destruction of the whisker morphology of CNCs. The extracted CNCs possess high crystallinity index of 80.8 ± 1.7 %, low residual hemicellulose (2.0 %) and lignin (0.7 %), and high-char content of 26.7 wt% from thermal degradation.

The high density and poor thermal insulation of traditional wood-plastic composites limited the application in the field of building materials. In this paper, wood fiber (WF) and PLA were used as raw materials and azodicarbonamide was used as the foaming agent. Lightweight WF/PLA composites were prepared by the hot-pressing foaming method, aiming to obtain renewable, low-density material with high strength-to-weight ratio and thermal insulation performance. Exploring the reusability of wood-based panels is imperative in the wood industry for sustainable development and carbon balance. Non-reusable adhesives make wood-based panel recycling difficult. In this study, inspired by the adhesion and de-adhesion behavior of snail slime, we built dynamic covalent/hydrogen hybrid networks into adhesive system for achieving both high bonding performance and reusability. Specifically, the softwood lignin was purified and pretreated by ultrasonication to form a catechol structure (UAL) and then combined with soybean protein to develop a 100 % bio-based wood adhesive. The catechol structure of UAL formed dynamic covalent bonds (CN) with the amino groups of the protein to improve the water resistance and formed multiple hydrogen bonds as a sacrificial network to improve the toughness of the adhesive. Thus, the wet shear strength of plywood bonded by the resultant adhesive improved by 101.4 % to 1.37 MPa. The adhesive also exhibited flame retardancy (LOI = 37.7 %), mildew resistance (60 h), and antibacterial performance (inhibition zone = 8 mm). Notably, owing to the rearrangement of dynamic covalent/hydrogen hybrid networks and the thermoplastic property of UAL, the resultant adhesive was reusable (3 cycles) and degradable (2 months), which provides a potential method for the reuse of wood-based panels.

Abundant studies have revealed that single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) regulate plant growth. However, whether or how SWCNTs influence plant wood formation remains largely unknown. In this report, we found that SWCNTs had positive effects on poplar growth, as reflected by significantly increased plant height, leaf size, and fresh and dry weight. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that the SWCNTs were absorbed in the exposed poplar root cells. A relatively higher content of cellulose and lignin was observed in the SWCNTs-treated poplar stems than in those of the control plants. It also showed darker phloroglucinol staining in the stems of exposed plants than that in control plants. Further analysis showed that the activities of key enzymes related to cellulose synthesis (cellulose synthase, CesA) and lignin biosynthesis (phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, PAL; cinnamate 4-hydroxylase, C4H; 4-coumarate:CoA ligase, 4CL; cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase, CAD) increased significantly after SWCNTs treatment. Consistent with the change trend of enzyme activity, the relative expression levels of a few lignin- and cellulose-related genes were activated by SWCNTs. Taken together, we proposed that SWCNTs have positive effects on poplar wood formation by modifying the expression of enzymes involved in the cellulose and lignin synthesis pathways. Our data suggest the modifications of wood formation through SWCNTs application could be a useful strategy for improvement of wood bioengineering.

Hemicellulose is an important component of the plant cell wall which vary in structure and composition between plant species. The research of hemicellulose structures is primarily focused on fast-growing plants during xylogenesis, with slow-growing and rare trees receiving the least attention. Here, hemicellulose structure of the rare species Castanopsis hystrix during xylogenesis was analyzed. Acetyl methyl glucuronide xylan was the most common type of hemicellulose in C. hystrix, with a unique tetrasaccharide structure at the reducing end. Hemicellulose type, structure, molecular weight, thermal stability, biosynthesis and acetyl substitution content and pattern remained stable during the xylogenesis in C. hystrix, which could be attributed to its slow growth. The stable polymer type, low side chain modification and high acetyl substitution of hemicellulose throughout the stems are among the reasons for the hardness and corrosion resistance properties of C. hystrix wood. Genetic modification can be used to improve these properties.

Producing energy and higher value bio-products from waste materials has been proposed as an economically viable opportunity in the renewable energy sector. However, several challenges associated with the integrated biomass conversion processes remain to be resolved. The present study introduces a multi-faceted plant production of thermal energy and biochar from construction and demolition (CD) wood chips. The overarching objective of the study is to reduce waste materials while simultaneously producing a self-independent clean thermal energy resource along with value-added co-products such as biochar, biogases and/or activated carbon. The combined thermal energy and slow pyrolysis unit relies on 95% of its energy from waste wood chips to produce thermal energy and high value carbon products. The system not only supplies the energy required for the indirect pyrolysis unit but also provides a major portion of thermal energy demanded for the site. A multi-purpose objective of wood waste management, energy production from waste material, high-quality biochar from waste wood (over 80% carbon), and carbon offsets is demonstrated through the utilization of this plant by addressing some of the major previously problems and challenges faced. The information is useful for techno-economic and life cycle analysis in the next study.

As a soybean oil extractive byproduct, high temperature defatted soy meal (HSM) presents great potential as a raw material for vegetable protein adhesives to replace aldehyde-based adhesives in the wood-based panel production. However, the application has been hindered by its poor cold-pressing adhesive performance. Herein, a novel HSM-based adhesive with excellent cold-pressing adhesion performance was developed based on mussel-inspired cation-π interactions. Highly reactive polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin (PAE) and folic acid (FA) were added into an HSM-based adhesive to construct a dual-network system stabilized by strong cation-π interactions. The coacervate formed by PAE and FA served as an "internal adhesive" to bond HSM particles together, yielding high initial viscosity but easy sizing. As expected, the prepared adhesive exhibited an excellent cold-pressing bonding strength of 423 kPa, showing a 295% improvement compared to the soy protein (SP) adhesive. Human health and environmental protection demand wood-based panel industry for innovative soy-based adhesives with high production efficiency, straightforward synthesis processes, non-toxicity, and high bonding performance. A simple and efficient microwave pretreatment process and low addition of bio-derived crosslinking agent was used in this study to prepare a non-toxic and high-bonding performance soybean protein-based adhesive. After 4 min of microwave pretreatment time, the complex quaternary structure of soybean protein molecule unfolds, the soybean protein disperses evenly and stably, and active groups of soybean protein molecules are exposed. After adding 3.85% crosslinking agent, the moisture absorption rate of the soybean protein-based adhesive decreases by 41.77%, the residual rate increases by 3.68%, and the wet shear strength of the resultant plywood increases to 1.12 MPa, which satisfies requirement of interior use plywood. Compared with previously reported soy-based adhesives, this adhesive is dependent on fewer chemical reagents, but has good bonding performance. The 204.41% of relative cell viability indicates the resultant adhesive was non-toxic. The proposed high-efficiency, high-performance, non-toxic biomass adhesive has great prospects for the industrial application.

Openmunicipal solid waste(MSW) dumpsites in India are significant hotspots of spontaneous fire and associated air and ground water pollution. Unscientific dumping of MSW poses a major threat to the surrounding environment and human health. One-year-old biodegradable waste components comprised of paper, cardboard, newspaper, textile, wood, grass leaves and coconut shell were analyzed for the determination of the moisture content (MC), smoldering temperature, ignition temperature, and ignition time. Principal component analysis of the old waste components revealed that cardboard, paper, newspaper and leaves are most susceptible waste components for spontaneous ignition. Hierarchically cellular, stiff, and lightweight niobium carbide (NbC)-pyrolytic carbon (PyC) monolithic foam composites possessing excellent electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) were developed via a natural wood template-based method. Pyrolytic carbon derived from the decomposed cellulose in the wood worked as the carbon source for the growth of NbC phase, and the NbC-PyC heterogeneous nano-interface formed between the residual PyC and the freshly formed NbC. Multi-loss mechanisms (e.g. conductive loss, dipole polarization loss, and especially interface polarization loss) were established by controlling the NbC content and residual PyC phase in the NbC-PyC foams, which significantly improved the absorption capability. Compared to 28.0 dB of PyC monolith, the EMI SE of NbC-PyC foam can reach 54.8 dB when the thickness is 0.5 mm, which outperforms the other porous-based shielding materials. Due to the highly porous structure of pristine wood, the resulting NbC-PyC foam exhibited a low density of 0.48 g/cm3, which is ~ 1/16 of dense NbC (7.78 g/cm3). Generally, this work introduces innovative ideas for designing novel and advanced transition metal carbide–carbon composite materials.

In this study, major factors involved in regulating ethanol production from wood by the saprotrophic white-rot fungus Phanerochaete sordida YK-624 were investigated. P. sordida YK-624 produced ethanol from wood meal culture without the addition of any nutrients, and ethanol was produced from wood culture only when the oxygen concentration in headspace was reduced to ≤5%; thereafter, ethanol production ceased within a few days. Analyses of gene expression during aerobic incubation indicated that P. sordida simultaneously upregulates the glycolytic pathway from sugar uptake to pyruvate conversion during ethanol fermentation and suppresses pyruvate influx into the TCA cycle. Upon termination of ethanol fermentation, the expression of all tested genes was repressed, and the fungus ceased to grow. In contrast, the fungus could utilize ethanol for aerobic growth. These results suggest that ethanol fermentation by P. sordida functions as a short-term stress response system under anaerobic conditions during wood decay, enabling the fungus to rapidly resume growing when oxygen is supplied (e.g., following breakdown of plant cell walls or removal of the fungus from water immersion). This is the first report to describe the physiologic significance of ethanol fermentation in saprotrophic white-rot fungi.

Pure deep eutectic solvents (DESs) system of choline chloride (ChCl)/Lactic acid (Lac) were demonstrated to be an effective strategy for extraction of lignin. In this study, two kinds of different promising solid acid (SA) with DESs were designed to promote the pretreatment of lignocellulose. The SA of phosphotungstic acid (H3O40PW12) and iron bromide (FeBr3) were introduced into DESs to extract poplar wood lignin and evaluate the antioxidant activity. It was found that 82.2% and 80.9% of lignin were obtained from poplar wood under H3O40PW12-ChCl/Lac acid and FeBr3-choline ChCl/Lac system with 4 h and 8 h, respectively. The lignin fractions with a high purity (>89%), low molecular weight (Mw 1800–2000 g/mol). Besides, the antioxidant activities of lignin fractions were better than butyl hydroxyanisole (BHA). Therefore, DES lignin has prominent antioxidant activity and could developed a potential natural cosmetics and food packaging.

This paper reports a fresh and robust strategy to develop polyurethane/polysiloxane pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) with excellent properties by replacing part of C5 petroleum resin with modified lignin. A unique aspect of this work is the use of renewable lignin to obtain modified monomers. The phenolic hydroxyl group of lignin is increased by 21.4% after demethylation, which will help to introduce 6-bromo-1-hexene into the lignin structure through Williamson method. The L3 lignin and C5 petroleum resin are mixed with polyurethane/polysiloxane prepolymer, and furthermore a series of PSAs are obtained under ultraviolet light. It turns out that L3 lignin can not only replace part of C5 petroleum resin, but also obtain attractive and controllable features. Especially when the mass ratio of C5 petroleum resin to L3 lignin is 6:4, compared with pure C5 petroleum resin, the 180° peel strength and the shear strength of PU46 are increased by 24.1% and 91.5% respectively. Additionally, the shear strength on the wood substrate is increased by 320.6%. This study provides an effective method for the preparation of high value-added lignin PSA, and expands the application fields of PSA.

Wood from invasive tree species Acacia dealbata and Ailanthus altissima was used to produce high value-added nanocellulose. Firstly, bleached pulps were produced from the wood of these tree species after kraft cooking. Afterwards, the resultant pulps were pre-treated by TEMPO-mediated oxidation (Acacia dealbata) or enzymatic hydrolysis (Ailanthus altissima) followed by high-pressure homogenization. Hydrogels were obtained and characterized for their main physical and chemical properties, including rheology measurements. After freeze-drying, the surface properties of the materials were evaluated by inverse gas chromatography. Results showed that nano/micro fibrils could be obtained from the wood of these invasive species. Rheometry studies showed that Acacia-TEMPO cellulose nanofibrils form strong gels with high yield stress point and viscosities (reaching ca. 100,000 Pa·s). Additionally, the surfaces of the obtained nanocelluloses showed a dispersive component of the surface energy near 40 mJ/m2 and a prevalence of the Lewis acidic character over the basic one, as typical for cellulose-based materials. Finally, films with good mechanical and optical properties could be obtained from the cellulose hydrogels. Acacia-TEMPO film (produced by filtration/hot pressing) showed a tensile strength of 79 MPa, Young's modulus of 7.9 GPa, and a transparency of 88%. The water vapor barrier, however, was modest (permeability of 4.9 × 10−6 g/(Pa·day·m)).

Lignocellulose including cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose could be extracted from wood, and has been used to prepare carbon electrode. However, complicated extraction greatly increases preparation cost. To achieve maximum utilization of lignocellulose and avoid complicated extraction, wood with porous structure and good mechanical strength is used as carbon precursor. Additionally, chemical activation is commonly used to create micropores to provide high capacitance, but it brings in natural structure destruction, and generation of wastewater during pickling. Moreover, to achieve desirable energy density, multi-step strategy with long duration is required for loading active materials on carbonized lignocellulose (CL). Herein, a one-step method is developed to prepare a free-standing hybrid CL electrode (CLE) by using Lewis acid in three aspects: (1) as structure protection agent, (2) as activating agent, (3) as active materials donor, which bypasses pickling and further avoids the generation of wastewater. Additionally, natural vessels in wood can not only provide large space for active materials loading, but also act as rapid ions diffusion way, simultaneously confining active materials detachment. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of porous structure and Lewis acid, this work not only makes full utilization of lignocellulose, but also makes CLE exhibit excellent performance in hybrid oxide supercapacitor.

The successful isolation of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) is essential for the investigation process of forestry molecular genetics. Samples used are usually retrieved either from soft or juvenile plant organs because of their excellent DNA source. However, in certain cases, aforesaid samples are hard to obtain, as for forensic purposes. Alternatively, woods possess potential as alternative source of DNA whose extraction method has been developed with varying degrees of success. However, to date, effectiveness on tropical wood grown in Indonesia has not been widely reported. Therefore, objective of this study was to compare the results of DNA isolation of various dried and fresh wood samples by using two isolation methods: Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) and Qiagen DNeasy Plant Mini Kit (QDPMK). Extraction results were visualized in agarose gels and quantified using Nanophotometer NP80 Implen which were then amplified using two universal primers: ITS and rbcL for detecting DNA signals. Extraction results from dried wood indicated no visualization in the gel, while fresh wood samples showed thick smeared bands on both extraction methods. Quantity test results denoted higher concentration in CTAB-extracted samples compared to samples extracted using QDPMK, in both types of samples, even though both resulted in optical density ratios outside the range of purity (λ260/280: 1,8–2,0 and λ260/230: 2,0, respectively). Success rates of ITS and rbcL primary amplification in dried wood samples were quite low yet outputs from the two methods did not differ significantly. Meanwhile, outcome of ITS and rbcL amplification on fresh wood samples had a fairly high success.

Wood is a state-of-art, renewable, and sustainable building material with excellent mechanical properties but negligible triboelectric polarizability. Strategies to improve and rationally tune the triboelectric properties of wood are needed to further its application for mechanical energy harvesting in smart buildings. We found that wood becomes more triboelectrically positive when modified by in situ-grown zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a metal-organic framework (MOF), and more triboelectrically negative when coated with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) made with two radial-cut wood samples (L x R x T: 35 x 20 x 1 mm(3)), respectively functionalized with ZIF-8 and PDMS, can generate an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 24.3 V and a short-circuit current (Isc) of 0.32 mu A upon 50 N, 80 times higher compared with that of native wood. We demonstrate the applicability of our functionalized wood TENG (FW-TENG) in smart buildings by using it to power household lamps, calculators, and electrochromic windows. ISSN:2590-2385

In this study, two kinds of form-stable multifunctional materials with thermal and electrical response (FPCMs: DP-E7U3-CNT, DP-E7T3-CNT) are composed of wood-based honeycomb-like celluloses micro-framework (DP), carbon nanotubes (CNT), erythritol-urea (E7U3) or erythritol-thiourea (E7T3). In FPCMs, DP acts as a skeleton structure to seal E7U3 and E7T3 and provide more pathways for heat conduction. The CNT acts as an extended surface to further improve thermal conductivity. FE-SEM showed that the honeycomb-like pore structure of DP was completely filled with E7U3, E7T3 and CNT. FTIR and XRD analysis show that there is only a combination of physical interactions between the components of FPCMs. DSC curves and thermal conductivity analysis results show that DP-E7U3-1.5CNT and DP-E7T3-1.5CNT with the mass fraction of carbon nanotubes (1.5 wt%) have the highest latent heat values (230.3 J/g, 272.2 J/g) and thermal conductivity (0.9832 W/(m·K), 0.9363 W/(m·K)). Both DP-E7U3-1.5CNT and DP-E7T3-1.5CNT exhibit high latent heat retention and thermal stability after 100 heating-cooling cycles. In addition, DP-E7U3-1.5CNT and DP-E7T3-1.5CNT show excellent performance in light-heat energy conversion-storage, actual latent heat storage and release, thermal and electrical response performance, which make it has great potential to be multifunctional materials with thermal storage sand electrical response.

Copper-based pesticides and wood preservatives could end up in the environment during production, use, and end-of-life via different pathways that could cause unintended ecological and adverse health effects. This paper provides the effect of colloid-size Cu-based pesticides (CuPRO and Kocide), micronized Cu azole (MCA-1 and MCA-2) and alkaline Cu quaternary (ACQ) treated woods, Cu(2+), Cu(2+) spiked untreated wood (UTW), and CuCO(3) solutions against Gram-positive Bacillus species using five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD(5)) standard test. The total Cu leached from MCA-1, MCA-2, and ACQ in Milli-Q water after 5 days were ˜0.1, ˜0.11, and ˜0.64 g/kg of wood, respectively. However, the form of Cu leached from MCA woods was mostly ionic (> 90%). The total organic carbon (TOC) content of any tested wood (UTW/MCA-1/MCA-2/ACQ) was ˜99% of its corresponding total carbon (TC) content, whereas the TOC of any tested wood sawdust exceeded that of its corresponding piece/block by > 300%. The dissolved oxygen (DO) consumption value in the presence of Cu(2+), CuCO(3), CuPRO, and Kocide solutions was significantly influenced by Cu particles/ions. However, the DO consumption value in the presence of UTW/MCA-1/MCA-2/ACQ woods was significantly influenced by organics leached from woods. On the other hand, the DO consumption of MCA sawdust was greater than (300%) that of MCA pieces/block. The findings of this study provide more insight into how organics leached from woods significantly reduce the toxic effects of Cu ions against Gram-positive Bacillus species.

Wood and coal combustion generate wastes, which may negatively influence the environment. However, studies concerning coal combustion products serving as soil additives are currently in progress. Hence, this study was conducted to compare properties (mineralogy, metallic element content, and rare earth element content) of combustion wastes of different genesis (ash and soot after wood and coal combustion in households, ash from thermal power stations) and to assess possible risk posed to the soil environment when used as soil additive. This study demonstrated the diversity of chemical and mineralogical features of ashes of household genesis originating from thermal power stations. Ash from household stoves showed a higher concentration of metallic elements (i.e., Zn) compared to those originating from thermal power stations. Antimony (Sb) content in household ash can serve as an indicator of plastic (polyethylene) combustion, which is legally prohibited. Leaching tests using water and common mineral fertilizers showed that ammonium sulfate mobilizes metallic elements (Cu, Zn, Pb) more significantly than potassium nitrate or deionized water. The leaching of metallic elements from household stove’s ash certainly excludes the possibility of applying the ash as a soil additive even when the ash contains a source of beneficial elements for plants (i.e., Ca).

The Royal Palace of Norway has a large 19th century wooden furniture collection and most of it is coated with shellac-based varnishes. Since these objects are part of the royal collections, they are still in daily use at the different residences and, therefore, need to be frequently cleaned. In this work, the effect of three cleaning commercial products (Baolin, Centurio, Fulgentin) used at the royal collections on shellac-coated mahogany is investigated for the first time. A non-invasive methodology (portable ER-FTIR spectroscopy and colorimetry) was applied to assess whether the chemical composition and the color of fresh and artificially aged mahogany wood mock-ups coated with shellac were affected by the above-mentioned cleaning products. This study shows that one of them causes changes in the varnished wood, thus potentially affecting the long-term conservation of this furniture collection. The aim of this study was to investigate how the carbon accounting of a wooden single-family house is affected by (1) decreasing the carbon footprint by changes in building design, (2) differentiating biogenic carbon from fossil carbon and (3) including external benefits beyond the state-of-the-art system boundaries. The motivation of exploring different system boundaries, improved building design and investigating benefits aside of system boundaries rely on the fact of having the “full” picture of GHG emissions of building products. Changes in building design were analyzed by life cycle assessment (LCA) focusing on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while the costs were assessed by using lice cycle cost (LCC). The findings showed that by including positive and negative emissions from the production phase for an improved building design within scenario 4 ‘Cradle to Gate + Biogenic Carbon + D module’ has the lowest embodied GHG emissions when compared to other approaches with −3.5 kg CO2e/m2/y50. Considering the impacts of the whole building, the lowest GHG emissions are within the scenario 8 ‘Cradle to Grave + Biogenic Carbon + D module‘ for the improved building design with −0.7 kg CO2e/m2/y50. The results suggest that a change to sustainable alternatives for building components that makes the whole building to be constructed by wood, could lead to significant reduction of GHG emissions compared to conventional material choices. Economically, testing sustainable solutions, the highlighted results are the construction costs that are almost double higher for CLT elements for the foundation compared to concrete. © 2023

We investigated the exploitation of horse manure for energy recovery by combustion. First, the impact of the waste origin and management (storage conditions) was evaluated in terms of elemental analysis, moisture content, heating value, and ash melting temperature. Besides some carbon loss over the time, horse manure origin and management policy do not impact its profitable exploitation by combustion. More relevant, the ignition tests disproved the current industrial opinion that combustion of manure alone is difficult, without the addition of auxiliary fuel, like wood shavings. It has been demonstrated through ignition tests that the major limitation in manure combustion is just the high moisture content (approx. 60% w.b.). The study focused on overcoming the detrimental effect of the large moisture content, and specifically its removal efficiency. The latter requires the understanding of manure permeability which is determined by the bedding material and the stable management. Here we provide indications of the impact of the manure composition and its sample size on the efficiency of moisture removal, whose energy impact must be minimized for an effective energy recovery. The energy balance confirms that the total removal of 62% w.b. moisture reduces by 23% the potential energy content of the manure; this drying penalty on energy is largely offset by the dramatic improvement in reactivity of the residual solid fuel.

Polymeric wood hemicelluloses are depicted to join cellulose, starch and chitosan as key polysaccharides for sustainable materials engineering. However, the approaches to incorporate hemicelluloses in emerging bio-based products are challenged by lack of specific benefit, other than the biomass-origin, although their utilization would contribute to sustainable material use since they currently are a side stream that is not valorized. Here we demonstrate wood-xylans as swelling modifiers for neutral and charged nanocellulose films that have already entered the sustainable packaging applications, however, suffer from humidity sensitivity. The oxidative modification is used to modulate the water-solubility of xylan and hence enable adsorption in an aqueous environment. A high molecular weight grade, hence less water-soluble, adsorbed preferentially on the neutral surface while the adsorbed amount on a negatively charged surface was independent of the molecular weight, and hence, solubility. The adsorption of the oxidized xylans on a neutral cellulose surface resulted in an increase in the amount of water in the film while on the negatively charged cellulose the total amount of water decreased. The finding of synergy of two hygroscopic materials to decrease swelling in hydrophilic bio-polymer films demonstrates the oxidized macromolecule xylan as structurally functional component in emerging cellulose products.

The present work aims at assessing the main characteristics of lignocellulosic micro/nanofibers (LCMNF) from bleached thermomechanical pulp (BTMP) from spruce while glimpsing the suitability of cationic demand (CD) as effective monitoring parameter of the fibrillation process. For this, BTMP was mechanically refined at different times in a Valley beater, aiming at determining the required refining time and fiber length to be later fibrillated in a high-pressure homogenizer. It was found that 150 min treatment is required to avoid clogging in the pressure chambers of the homogenizer. The mechanically treated BTMP was gradually passed through a high-pressure homogenizer, leading to four LCMNF with different fibrillation degree. The main characteristics of the LCMNF were determined, as well as the effect that high-pressure homogenization may generate onto the LCMNF structure. It was observed that CD is a robust parameter to monitor the fibrillation process, as it is a good indicator of the LCMNF characteristics. In addition, it was found that WRV may not be a good indicator of the extent of fibrillation for LCMNF, as the lignin content varies with the homogenization intensity. Finally, the limitations of CD as monitoring parameter and perspectives on this regard are provided to the reader.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have been recognized as one of the most promising nanofillers in modern science and technology owing to their outstanding characteristics of renewability, biodegradability, excellent mechanical strength, and liquid crystalline behavior. Interestingly, these properties are dependent on their genetic and also on the isolation process. Therefore, this research aimed to unveil how the biological variations of cellulose can influence on the physical properties of the extracted CNCs. A standard optimized extraction process was adopted to isolate the CNCs from different sources. Extracted CNCs were compared through characterization tools, including Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetry Analysis (TGA), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM). Different self-assembly patterns were observed for different CNCs, owing to their biological variations. The resultant nanocrystals displayed variable morphologies such as spherical, rod, and needle shape. The hydrodynamic diameter, crystallinity index, decomposition temperature, liquid crystallinity, and storage modulus were varied. Nanocrystals isolated from non-wood feedstock have shown a higher degree of polymerization of 108.2 and a high Crystllinity Index (C·I.) of 55.1%. The rod-like morphology with the liquid crystalline pattern was obtained at 3 wt% concentration for SCNC.

Steam co-gasification of banana peel with other biomass, i.e., Japanese cedar wood, rice husk and their mixture, was carried out for the hydrogen-rich gas production in a fixed-bed reactor. For the co-gasification process, the banana peels were physically mixed with rice husk, Japanese cedarwood and their mixture respectively by different mixing weight ratios. The effects of reaction temperature and the addition amount of banana peel on the gas production yield were investigated by comparing the experimental data with the calculated ones based on the individual biomass gasification at the same condition. It was found that the banana peel with a high content of alkali and alkaline earth metal (AAEM) species exhibited not only high gasification reactivity but also a significant enhancing catalytic effect on the co-gasification process at the low temperature, especially with the biomass containing no silica species. The high content of silica species in the rice husk had a negative effect on the gasification reactivity of banana peel during the co-gasification since it could hinder the release of AAEM from the biomass and/or lead to the possible formation of inactive alkaline silicates. However, the combination of these three samples with the suitable weight ratio could improve the gasification performance at the low temperature due to the synergetic effect provided by high contents of potassium and calcium from banana peel and cedarwood respectively. Moreover, the addition of calcined seashells as the CaO source could further improve the gas production yield, especially the hydrogen gas yield at a relatively low gasification temperature of 750 ℃.

Thermal modification reduces the hygroscopicity of timber potentially reducing susceptibility to biological degradation, but it is also energetically intensive. Identifying methods for accelerating the process could reduce these inputs. The potential effects of glycerol pretreatment on thermal modification was investigated by pre-treating poplar wood (Populus tomentosa Carr.) with 60% glycerol followed by thermal modification at temperatures between 120 and 200 °C for 4 h. Potential changes in the wood were analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy to detect the changes in cell wall components, crystallinity, the average size of the crystalline region and cell wall thickness. Glycerol accelerated lignin decomposition over the entire temperature range. Thermal modification altered the degree of cellulose crystallinity as well as the average size of the crystalline region and the effects were more noticeable with the glycerol pre-treatment. The cell wall thickness of thermally treated wood decreased with increasing temperature and glycerol accelerated this process. Glycerol appears to enhance the modification process with increasing treatment temperature.

Kraft lignin, so far useful for energy generation, has been gathering considerable attention as an alternative material to replace fossil-based resources mainly due to its high phenolic content. However, the wide molecular weight distribution and chemical composition heterogeneity led to the development of fractionation methods. Herein, to narrow such characteristics we used eucalypt kraft lignin fractionated at pH's 9, 7, 5 and 3 by sequential acid precipitation. These lignin fractions were first characterised by simultaneous pyrolysis and trimethylsilylation (SPyT) with N-Methyl-N-(trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide with posterior tests of antioxidant, antibacterial, and antitumour activities. We observed higher ratio of syringyl/guaiacyl groups and increase in antioxidant activity in those fractions with lower molecular weight (precipitated at lower pH's). Fractions precipitated at pH's 9 and 7 have shown an outstanding antibacterial activity against five bacteria. Moreover, fractions 7 and 5 presented at cytotoxicity tests higher ability to inhibit the growth of U87MG and T98G glioma cells, while only a slight inhibition of adult human fibroblasts (non-tumour cells) was detected.

International audience; Using a compartment with adjustable oxygen concentration and internal pressure, the shrinkage and cracking of isotropic char layer during pyrolysis were studied by pyrolyzing the medium density fibreboard (MDF) in inert atmosphere with different ambient pressures. The experimental results have shown that the ambient pressure has insignificant effect on shrinkage although some trends have been identified. Therefore, the reduction of tensile strength of material dominates the char cracking under low pressures, leading to noticeableincrease in the number of char fissures. The char shrinkage could expose the raw material beneath the char layer and enhance the radiative heat transfer at the sample surface (by fissure width instead of number), which is modeled using a modified thermal conductivity as the typical simplification. It is found that the mass loss rate at the early pyrolysis stage increases up to 20% with increasing width of char fissures. However, the external radiation can only affect a limited depth in the near surface zone which is found less than 3 mm in the current experiments. The thermal conductivity under near regular pressure could be over 2 times higher than its value under low pressure (30 kPa) and with which the differences in the first peaks of mass loss rate under different pressures can be well predicted.

International audience; The service life and the durability of wood-based structures is closely related to the moisture content of the material. In order to establish an optimal and reliable evaluation of the moisture content distribution, this paper presents an experimental–numerical approach based on the adaptation of Electric Resistivity Tomography, mainly used for electrical prospecting measurements in geophysics. This method is based on the injection of electric current and the measurement of the potential difference using needle-shaped probes inserted into a Douglas-fir sample. Electrical measurements were coupled to a numerical finite-element-based approach. A numerical inversion was sequentially performed to minimize the gap between simulations and experimental data. The result of this study proposes an efficient mixed approach to identify a longitudinal resistivity profile during the wood moistening process. The correlation of moisture content with electrical resistivity offers guidance in the identification of the moisture content distribution of timber elements.

This paper addressed the flexural behaviour (i.e., maximum load, ductility index, flexural strength and stiffness) of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams strengthened by 2-layer flax-glass hybrid fibre reinforced polymer (HFRP) exposed to hygrothermal (50℃ and 95% RH) and weathering (cyclic water spray-ultraviolet radiation) conditions for one month. Effects of environmental exposure and fabric sequences on flexural behaviour of LVL-HFRP beams were studied. LVL-FG and LVL-GF beams (inner plies bonded to LVL were flax and glass fibres, respectively) were tested under four-point bending. Tensile test on HFRP flat coupons was also conducted to provide the tensile parameters of HFRP in LVL-HFRP beams. This study showed that the hygrothermal and weathering exposures reduced the maximum load (by 11.4-32.2%), flexural strength (by 19.1-40.0%) and increased the ductility index (by 18.3-41.7%) of LVL-HFRP beams. The hygrothermal exposure did not affect flexural stiffness. The fabric sequence affected the flexural behaviour of LVL-HFRP beams. LVL-GF beams showed lower maximum load and flexural strength than those of the LVL-FG beams, which was attributed to the HFRP delamination in the LVL-GF beams. A theoretical prediction model for the ultimate bending moments of LVL-HFRP beams was used, and the calculated values showed a good agreement with the experiments.

Oily sewage discharged from indiscriminate industrial and frequent oil spills have become a serious global problem. There is an urgent need to separate stable oil/water emulsions by efficient and environmentally friendly methods. Membrane separation technology has the advantages of low energy consumption and low cost, thus is an effective solution to the problems of oily wastewater. However, the manufacture of multifunctional membranes with high efficiency, high flux and self-cleaning using renewable materials remains a challenge. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) smart membranes with switchable superhydrophobic-hydrophilic surfaces were prepared by grafting photo-responsive poly-spiropyran (PSP) on wood-based substrates via surface atom transfer radical polymerization. This novel membrane can efficiently separate stabilized water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions due to reversible hydrophilic-hydrophobic transition by switching UV and visible light irradiation. Remarkably, after immobilization, the PSP grafted on the wood substrate exhibited a faster photo response effect than the free spiropyran (SP). The sensory effects of grilling wood on consumers' response are poorly understood, despite their potentiality in diversifying dishes. This study investigated both the effects of six materials (beech tree wood, Turkey oak wood, Sangiovese grapevine wood, olive wood, strawberry tree wood, charcoal briquettes) used to grill chicken breast meat on liking and sensory perception and consumers' interest in using wood for grilling. A consumer test was conducted (n = 99 subjects, 45% males, aged from 18 to 65 years), applying a Rate-All-That-Apply test, a liking test, and a questionnaire exploring the interest, the perceived value and the sustainability of wood as part of the food processing. The type of wood clearly affected the consumers' sensory perception and acceptability of meat. Strawberry tree wood was the most connoted and divisive sample. Turkey oak, olive tree and Sangiovese grapevine woods were associated to milder sensory profile. Two clusters were found (respectively with 54% participants in Cl1 and 46% in Cl2), with opposite preferences: while Cl2 preferred meat grilled with the most connotating wood (Strawberry tree wood) characterized by bitterness while Cl1 on the opposite preferred meat grilled with the milder woods. Consumers showed a high interest for grilling material, wood origin and wood botanical species, independently from the cluster. Strawberry tree wood was the material that most strongly connotated grilled meat and thus the most divisive one in terms of liking. Different varieties of wood and certified sustainable wood can valorize the grilling process in food services.

Developing effective policy solutions to transition away from the use of solid fuels for residential heating purposes can be hindered by the lack of reliable data on its use. One such issue is the extent of informal solid fuel use, that is, consumption from sources outside of formal commercial channels. This is an area which has been largely ignored in previous empirical research. Using a survey of residential solid fuel users, the extent of solid fuel use in the residential sector in Ireland from informal sources for two fuels, sod peat and wood, is quantified. Sod peat is found to be almost exclusively sourced informally while just over half of wood use is estimated to be sourced by households in this way. Factors including location, household income, being a primary user of the fuel and having strong cost motivations all effect the probability of sourcing solid fuels informally relative to formal sources. The sizeable extent to which informal sources of solid fuels are used in Ireland arising from the analysis in this paper, highlights the potential for substitution to this unregulated alternative. This should be carefully monitored for effective implementation of new and existing solid fuel regulations.

The abundance of synthetic polymers has become an ever-increasing environmental threat in the world. The excessive utilization of plastics leads to the accumulation of such recalcitrant pollutants in the environment. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, unprecedented demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, face masks, and gloves made up of single-use items has resulted in the massive generation of plastic biomedical waste. As secondary pollutants, microplastic particles (5 mm) are derived from pellet loss and degradation of macroplastics. Therefore, urgent intervention is required for the management of these hazardous materials. Physicochemical approaches have been employed to degrade synthetic polymers, but these approaches have limited efficiency and cause the release of hazardous metabolites or by-products into the environment. Therefore, bioremediation is a proper option as it is both cost-efficient and environmentally friendly. On the other hand, plants evolved lignocellulose to be resistant to destruction, whereas insects, such as wood-feeding termites, possess diverse microorganisms in their guts, which confer physiological and ecological benefits to their host. Plastic and lignocellulose polymers share a number of physical and chemical properties, despite their structural and recalcitrance differences. Among these similarities are a hydrophobic nature, a carbon skeleton, and amorphous/crystalline regions. Compared with herbivorous mammals, lignocellulose digestion in termites is accomplished at ordinary temperatures. This unique characteristic has been of great interest for the development of a plastic biodegradation approach by termites and their gut symbionts. Therefore, transferring knowledge from research on lignocellulosic degradation by termites and their gut symbionts to that on synthetic polymers has become a new research hotspot and technological development direction to solve the environmental bottleneck caused by synthetic plastic polymers.

Soils of Mediterranean forests can be severely degraded due to wildfire. However, post-fire management techniques, such as soil mulching with vegetal residues, can limit degradation and increase functionality of burned soils. The effects of post-fire mulching on soil functionality have been little studied in Mediterranean forests, and it is still unclear whether the application of straw or wood residues is beneficial. This study explores the changes in important soil chemical and biochemical properties in a pine forest of Central Eastern Spain after a wildfire and post-fire mulching with straw or wood chips. Only basal soil respiration (BSR), dehydrogenase activity (DHA), pH and water field capacity (WFC) significantly changed after the fire and mulching. In contrast, the other enzymatic activities - urease (UA), alkaline phosphatase (Alk-PA) and β-glucosidase (BGA), - total organic carbon (TOC) and electrical conductivity (EC) were not influenced by these soil disturbances. Time from fire and soil conditions (due to burning and management) were significant variability factors for BSR, pH, BGA, UA, TOC, EC. Mulching increased BSR compared to burned areas, especially in soils with straw (+30 %), thanks to addition of fresh organic residues, quickly incorporated in the soil. Soil pH showed a low variability among the four soil conditions, and TOC was higher in mulched soils (on average + 20 % compared to the burned soils), and this was correlated to the increased BSR. The role of mulching was essential with reference to WFC, as the post-fire management limited its reduction after the fire (on average from -30 % to -20 %). Finally, the Principal Component Analysis coupled to the Analytical Hierarchical Cluster Analysis confirmed the significant influence of the post-fire management on some enzymatic activities, although a sharp discrimination among the four soil conditions was only evident between unburned and burned sites, regardless of the management. Overall, it has been shown that mulching promotes conservation of fragile Mediterranean soils, indicating its effectiveness at preserving soil functionality in areas affected by forest fires.

Wood dust is the major wastes from timber and wood-based panel processing, including wood sawing, sanding, chipping, flaking, etc., which easily causes fire and explosions. The fine wood dust had risks of inhaling the dust air, causing problems to the respiratory system of workers, as well as the explosive risk of the wood dust-air mixture. Wood dust explosions occur worldwide, which have caused massive damages to equipment, buildings, and environments, killed people, and threatened human health. This study was aimed at exploring the causes, affecting factors, mechanisms, models of wood dust explosions, and their environmental/health impacts through reviewing and analyzing the collected data in order to minimize wood dust explosion risks by improving of safety procedures in the wood processing industry. To better understood and prevent wood dust explosion cases in the future, this review collected the explosion reports and analyzed the accident information through the following aspects: 1) Summarization of published review articles regarding wood dust explosions in Introduction, 2) Scrutinization of wood dust explosion cases and design of testing device, 3) Exploration of effects of wood dust properties and surrounding conditions on explosion and their mechanisms, 4) Investigation of methods for reducing wood dust explosion risks, 5) Modeling and simulation of wood dust explosions, 6) Examination of environmental and health impacts of wood dust explosions. Finally, the findings in this review were summarized in Conclusions. By collecting dust explosion reports, reviewing literature, and analyzing the collected data, wood dust explosions can be better understood. The results of this study can be useful for the design of equipment and dust absorption systems, as well as further suggestion of safety improvement procedures to minimize or eliminate risks of wood dust-related fire and explosion in the wood processing industry and mitigate its impacts on environments and health.

In this work, twenty-five kinds of choline chloride (ChCl)-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) containing acid, hydroxyl, amide, and binary hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) were prepared and successfully used to pretreat pine wood powder. As a result of the pretreatment, the glucan content in the pretreated biomass was increased, whereas the contents of hemicellulose and lignin were significantly decreased. The biomass pretreatment efficiency of the DESs had improved with increasing the polarity and hydrogen bond acidity (α) of the DESs. Among the studied DESs, ChCl:lactic acid:formic acid (1:1:1) with the highest α value was the most efficient DES in extracting lignin from biomass. The pretreated biomass also showed an enhanced enzymatic saccharification yield owing to the decreased particle size of the biomass and reduced content of hemicellulose and lignin. During the pretreatment process of biomass using DESs, the extracted lignin could be recovered successfully, with a yield of up to 60% and purity of over 90%. The molecular weight of the extracted lignin was much lower than that of the native cellulolytic enzyme lignin. The DES used for pretreatment process could be also successfully reused with high recovery yield of DES and high retention of delignification capacity.

Ginkgo shells as by-products from Ginkgo biloba L. industries with a remarkable annual output up to now are not fully analyzed and exploited. For the application of ginkgo shells beyond their current roles, structure and antioxidant activity of milled wood lignins successively extracted from two ginkgo shell species were investigated. Results showed lignin in ginkgo shells is abundant in guaiacyl units with the presence of ferulates and p-coumarates and demonstrates a high yield of vanillin (1.47–1.65 mmol/g-lignin) by nitrobenzene oxidation, much higher than general softwoods and hardwoods (0.6–0.9 mmol/g-lignin), which makes ginkgo shells good feedstocks for the production of food and beverage flavoring agent. By increasing the extent of ball-milling (4–8 h), the polydispersity of lignin molecular weight exhibits negligible change, but condensation and aldol interconversion occur to its Cβ/C5 structure and end-groups, respectively. Lignin in ginkgo shells also features outstanding antioxidant activity with the optimal radical scavenging index of 6.9, much higher than commercial butyl hydroxyanisole (3.85) and butylated hydroxytoluene (0.29), and the phenolic hydroxyl is demonstrated to dominate this contribution by the analysis of statistical product and service solutions. These results reveal lignin in ginkgo shells shows many unique structural and biological properties for materials.

Nature has given several unique features to one of the most abundant and inexhaustible biopolymers on the earth, i.e., cellulose. Besides, biodegradability, and cost-effectiveness, cellulose possesses attractive properties such as the ability to undergo chemical and structural modification, plus its light weight and thermal and mechanical stability. Cellulose originates from natural sources, including being significant components of plants (ca. 33%), wood (ca. 50%), and cotton (ca. 90%). It can also be synthesized and modified further into a variety of functionalized nanomaterials for diversified sectors, such as bio-medical, food, customer care, and environmental services. Considering the significant growth in product development and interdisciplinary cellulose-based research, the proposed chapter will let the reader gain knowledge about in-vitro extraction, synthesis of nanomaterials, and applications to resolve ongoing environmental challenges.
