Aim: Our study aims to investigate the relationship between platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and the correlation between percutaneous coronary intervention with taxus and cardiac surgery (SYNTAX) scores. Materials and Methods: The patients were divided into three groups according to their SYNTAX score. Group 1 included patients with a SYNTAX score 33. PLR was calculated as the ratio of platelet count to lymphocyte count. Results: In multivariate logistic regression analysis, high PLR and NLR ratios and older age were independent predictors of high SYNTAX score II [odds ratio (OR): 1.052; 95% confidence interval (CI): (0.998-1.119), p=0.011; OR: 1.093; 95% CI: (1.016-1.175), p=0.016; OR:1.023; 95% CI: (1.010-1.038), p=0.001, respectively. Introduction: The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) have been used as new inflammatory markers in certain autoimmune diseases to assess the severity of inflammation. The current study aimed to evaluate the changes in neutrophil and lymphocyte series in hyperthyroid patients and to investigate whether NLR, PLR, and SII may be markers of inflammation.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 207 Graves’ patients and 120 healthy controls between 2018-2022 years. Hematologic parameters, thyroid function tests, age and gender were recorded. The NLR, PLR and SII values of all subjects were calculated. Firstly, groups were composed as Graves' group and participants without thyroid disorder as control group. Secondly, Graves' patients composed as two groups before treatment and after antithyroid treatment. These groups were compared with each other in terms of descriptive data and hematological parameters.Results: The patient and control groups were similar in terms of gender (p=0.522) and age (p=0.051). Graves’ patients had a significantly lower NLR than the control group (p=0.004). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of PLR (p=0.120) and SII (p=0.577). Patients’ baseline TSH-receptor antibodies (TRAb) levels had a significant positive correlation with fT3 (r:0.283, p lt;0.001), fT4 (r:0.252, p lt;0.001) and Thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) (r:0.673, p lt;0.001). There was no significant correlation between TRAb and TSI levels, inflammatory markers, and hematological parameters.Conclusions: Graves’ patients had lower NLR compared to the control group. The patient and control groups did not have a significant difference with regard to PLR and SII. Background and Design: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. The monocyte/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ratio (MHR), neutrophil/HDL cholesterol ratio (NHR), and lymphocyte/HDL cholesterol ratio (LHR) are new inflammatory parameters associated with inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to compare MHR, NHR, and LHR between patients with rosacea and healthy controls and determine the relationship of these parameters with disease severity. Materials and Methods: The study retrospectively included 82 patients who presented to our hospital with rosacea and 82 healthy controls. The MHR, NHR, and LHR of the patient and control groups were calculated. Patients were divided into groups according to the clinical subtypes, disease severity, and presence of Demodex mites. Results: Of the 82 patients included in the study, 62 (75.6%) were female and 20 (24.4%) were male, and their mean age was 41.95±1.2 (22-65.43) years. The mean MHR values of the rosacea and control groups were 0.01±0.005 and 0.009±0.003, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (p=0.01). The mean NHR values of the rosacea and control groups were 0.10±0.05 and 0.08±0.02, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (p=0.04). The mean LHR values of the rosacea and control groups were 0.05±0.02 and 0.04±0.01, respectively, indicating no statistically significant difference (p>0.05). For the prediction of patients with rosacea, the cut-off MHR was calculated as 0.009 (67% sensitivity and 60% specificity) and that of NHR was 0.08 (64% sensitivity and 60% specificity). Background: Various inflammatory biomarkers have been associated with increased risk of severe disease, termed "cytokine storm," in COVID-19 patients. In this study, it was aimed to investigate whether there is significant difference in terms of inflammatory markers such as lymphocyte count, CRP, sedimentation, ferritin, gender and age between the patients who recovered and died. Materials and Methods: In our study, we used routine laboratory test results from patients in diagnosis and treatment process between 03.04.2020-31.12.2020. We investigated CRP, sedimentation, fibrinogen, ferritin, troponin-I, D-dimer and hemogram parameters retrospectively. We searched for statistical significance based on the parameters in the first admission blood. Results: Which included 213 patients with positive PCR test, 83 died from COVID-19-related causes, while the others were discharged. Except for the platelet counts, we found a statistically significant difference in the others. These tests were higher in patients who died at the time of first presentation. The biomarkers with the best performance in predicting ROC curve survival were Troponin-I, CRP, Ferritin, Neutrophil, and D-dimer. There was a significant difference in favor of males in mortality rates by gender. When the patients are examined, it can be said that mortality increases with age. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic has been a global disaster with high complication, mortality and more economic impact. In this process, cost-effective and appropriate indicators were needed to simplify the diagnostic process and assess disease severity. Recent studies showed how biomarkers could change with COVID-19 severity. These results can be used as an aid in clinical practice to determine treatment, guide ICU admission, and predict clinical course. Troponin-I, CRP, D-dimer, LDH and are interesting biomarkers that can be used for short-term risk stratification of patients admitted with COVID-19. Introduction: It was aimed to investigate the effects of vitamin B12 deficiency on blood tests, mean platelet volume (MPV), and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), which is one of the inflammation markers.Methods: Our study is a case-control study of 375 patients. 170 patients with low B12 ( lt;130 pg/dL) were accepted as the experimental group, and 205 individuals with normal B12 levels were accepted as the control group. Between these two groups, white blood cells (WBC), platelet count (Plt), hemoglobin (Hgb), mean erythrocyte volume (Mean Corpuscular Volume-MCV), mean platelet volume (Mean Platelet Volume-MPV), neutrophil, lymphocyte counts, and neutrophil -lymphocyte ratios (NLR) were examined.Results: The mean age was 48.45 ±17.497 years in the B12 deficient group and 51.93 ±16.175 years in the control group. The mean of vitamin B12 in the deficient group was 101.41 ± 20.50 pg/mL (min-max 37-130), while it was 257.24 ± 88.13 pg/mL (131–498) in the control group. It was observed that there was no statistically significant difference between WBC, Hgb, Plt, neutrophil, lymphocyte, MVC, MPV and NLR values.Conclusion: In our study, we could not find a significant relationship between B12 deficiency and blood tests. In previous studies, there has been information that MPV values are affected by B12 deficiency. In our study, we found that there was no significant relationship between B12 deficiency and MPV or NLR (p gt; 0.05). There is a need for new studies on how B12 deficiency will change as the degree and duration of B12 deficiency increases, especially its effect on atherogenic events.

Aim:Routine blood parameters are widely used to detect of infectious diseases. Our study aimed to investigate the hematological parameters changes in rotavirus (RV) acute gastroenteritis and to evaluate the value of these parameters in children.Methods:In our study, the hematological data of patients diagnosed with RV-positive acute gastroenteritis (RPAGE) and RV-negative acute gastroenteritis (RNAGE) were analyzed between 2015-2020. In addition to the data automatically measured by complete blood count, lymphocyte/monocyte ratio (LMR), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), mean platelet volume/platelet ratio (MPVPR) were calculated. All cases were evaluated in three different age groups (5-year-old).Results:The present study included 2,144 patients (340 children with RPAGE, 1,804 children with RNAGE). Red blood cell count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit were higher in cases over 1 year of age with RPAGE. The MPVPR was lower in all age groups with RPAGE. The cut-off values of MPVPR for predicting Rotavirus infection (RI) were 0.023 (5-year-old group). The LMR was lower and NLR was higher in cases over 1 year of age with RPAGE. The cut-off value of LMR for predicting RI were 1.99 (1-to 5-year-old group) and 0.96 (>5-year-old group). The cut-off value of NLR for predicting RI were 1.41 (1-to 5-year-old group), and 3.79 (>5-year-old group).Conclusion:The low MPVPR can be used as a hematological biomarker for the identification of RPAGE cases in all age groups. Low LMR and high NLR can indicate RPAGE cases in over 1 year of age.

Aim:The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a parameter that has been shown to be effective as a prognostic marker in many solid tumors. It is aimed to investigate NLR and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in predicting the overall survival and lymph node positivity in bladder cancer (BC).Methods:The retrospective study included patients that underwent radical cystoprostatectomy/radical cystectomy (RC) due to muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), high-grade T1 BC, or carcinoma in situ in our clinic between January 2010 and March 2020. All the patients had no history of preoperative metastasis, lymph nodes, chemotherapy, hematological malignancies, and preoperative urinary tract infection. Data on neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelet, and hemoglobin levels and total white blood cell counts were retrieved from clinical records and data on disease stage and lymph node positivity were retrieved from pathology reports. Follow-up times and survival times were recorded.Results:The 213 patients comprised 196 (92%) men and 17 (8%) women with a mean age of 63.17±11.25 years. Lymph node positivity was detected in 49 (23%) patients. The mean overall survival time was 75.04, 63.77, and 84.4 months in all patients, patients with lymph node positivity, and patients with lymph node negativity, respectively. No significant difference was found between patients with lymph node positivity and negativity with regard to NLR and SII values (p=0.975 and p=0.745, respectively). In the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis NLR and SII had no significant effect in predicting lymph node positivity [Area under the ROC curve (AUC) 0.499 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.403-0.594) and AUC 0.485 (95% CI: 0.394-0.575), respectively] and in predicting overall survival [AUC 0.423 (95% CI: 0.346-0.501, p=0.056) and AUC 0.435 (95% CI: 0.357-0.514, p=0.107), respectively].Conclusion:The results indicated that SII and NLR are not sufficient to predict lymph node positivity and survival in patients with organ-confined BC.

Background: We aimed to evaluate hematological parameters especially Mean Platelet Volüme (MPV) values in children followed-up for stuttering. Materials and Methods: The study included a total of 130 individuals, comprising 60 in the patient group with a stutter and 70 in the control group. Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acedic Acid (EDTA) blood samples drawn at admission of the patient were analyzed in an automated hematology analysis system. .White blood cell, neutrophil, lymphocyte, MPV platelet count, neutrophil- lymphocyte ratio(NLR), platelet- lymphocyte ratio(PLR) and Systemic Immun Inflamation Index(SII) were measured. Results: The mean age was 8.93±3.87 years (min:4-max:15) in the stuttering group and 8.73±3.21 years (min:5 max: 15) in the control group. MPV, white blood cell, neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelet count, PLR and SII were higher in patient group compared to the controls and the difference was statistically significant (p<0,05). Conclusions: In this study, MPV was found to increase in stuttering children. Also, we believe that the use of new markers such as MPV in children with stuttering could be a guiding parameter in determination inflammatory status. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Severe respiratory syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) caused a global pandemic that spread all over Turkey following the announcement of the first case on March 11, 2020. The present study aimed to investigate the diagnostic utility of complete blood count (CBC) parameters, C-reactive protein (CRP), and their ratios as well as their prediction on intensive care unit (ICU) admission among patients with Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19). Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 339 patients that presented to a tertiary care hospital and were diagnosed with COVID-19 and a group of 399 control subjects that were found to have no COVID-19 despite presenting with the classic signs and symptoms of the disease. CBC parameters, CRP, Neutrophil/Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Platelet/Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR), and C-reactive protein/ Lymphocyte Ratio (CLR) were evaluated in both groups. Results: Compared to the control group, patients had significantly lower white blood cell (WBC), lymphocyte, neutrophil, hemoglobin (HB), and platelet (PLT) values; NLR, PLR, CLR, CRP and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) values were significantly higher. NLR, PLR, and CLR were found to be important determinants in the diagnosis of COVID-19. In addition, while CRP, WBC, RDW, neutrophil, NLR, CLR, and PLR levels were significantly higher in ICU patients, lymphocyte and HB levels were significantly lower in ICU patients compared to other patients. Conclusions: CBC parameters as well as CRP, NLR, PLR, and CLR are inexpensive, routinely studied parameters and can be useful in predicting the diagnosis and severity of COVID-19. Introduction: Due to the well-knownrelationship between inflammatory processes and carcinogenesis, the diagnosticand prognostic value of systemic inflammatory markers are at the focus ofresearch. This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of inflammatorycell data obtained from complete blood count in incidentally detected thyroidpapillary carcinoma.Methods: A total of 100 cases wereincluded in the study, consisting of histopathologically diagnosed multinodularhyperplasia (MNH) (N = 20), lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT) (n = 20), incidentalthyroid papillary carcinoma (ITPC) (n = 20), incidental papillary carcinoma andlymphocytic thyroiditis (ITPCLT) (n = 20), and thyroid papillary carcinoma(TPC) (n = 20). Neutrophil / lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/ lymphocyte ratio(PLR), platelet/neutrophil ratio (PNR), lymphocyte/ monocyte ratio (LMR) andlymphocyte/ eosinophil ratio (LER) values were compared between the groups.Results: No significant differencewas detected between the groups concerning the mean inflammatory cell andplatelet values. However, statistical significance was observed between theITPC and ITPCLT groups regarding the mean LMR and LER values (p=0.009 andp=0.037, respectively). Higher LMR was found in the ITPC group, while higherLER was seen in the ITPCLT group.Conclusions: We suggest that besidesratios such as NLR and PLR used as systemic inflammatory markers in carcinogeneticprocesses, the evaluation of LER and LMR might be imperative as well.Therefore, these potential markers should be studied in bigger series oftumors, especially where inflammatory processes are involved in the etiology.

Objective: It was aimed to determine the clinical appearance, laboratory results, treatment, and prognosis of children presenting with scorpion sting and aims to determine the predictive markers in cases of advanced stages. Material and Methods: The patients who were admitted to the Pediatric Emergency Clinic of Health Sciences University Tepecik Education and Research Hospital between January 2008 and November 2020 with a complaint of scorpion sting were analyzed retrospectively in terms of epidemiological features, clinical appearance, laboratory results, treatment methods, and prognosis. Results: The mean age of 77 patients who were admitted to our emergency department due to scorpion stings was 82.3±57.3 months. The clinical grade of 60 patients (77.9%) who were admitted was Stage I, 12 (15.6%) of them was Stage II, 4 (5.2%) was Stage III, and one (1.3%) was detected as Stage IV. When compared according to staging, the mean creatinine kinase (CK) of patients with stage I was 175.7±78.8 U/L, mean neutrophil count was 5.9±3.3 x103/uL, mean serum amylase value is 69.3”±42.2 U/L; in patients with Stage II-IIIIV, mean CK level was 360±309.3 U/L, mean neutrophil count was 9.9±4.6 x103/uL, mean serum amylase level was 113.6±81.2 U/L (p<0.05). When laboratory values were compared between inpatientoutpatient discharge and antivenom given and not given patients, the same parameters were found to be significantly higher (p<0.05). Conclusion: It should always be kept in mind that patients with scorpion sting may deteriorate clinically. INTRODUCTION: In this study, it was aimed to investigate in detail the contribution of hemogram indices such as neutrophil/lymphocyteratio (NLR), red blood cell distribution width (RDW), RPR, MPR, mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet count (PLT) to the diagnosis of febrile seizure (FS). MATERIALS and METHODS: 91 FS, 116 febrile disease and 100 healthy control cases were included in the study. Significant hemogram indices in favor of FS were determined as a result of double and triple group comparisons with appropriate statistical analyzes, and diagnostic cut-off values, sensitivity and specificity were calculated for FS diagnosis according to receiever operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. RESULTS: NLR index was significantly higher in the FS group. The median was 2.6 in the FS group, 1.6 and 0.7 in the febrile disease and healthy control groups, respectively (p<0.001). In the ROC curve analysis, the cut-off values, sensitivity and specificities of the NLR index for FS diagnosis were determined. The 1/RPR index was found to be statistically significantly lower in FS group. It was found to be 20.5 in the FS group, 23.3 and 23.2 in the febrile disease and healthy control groups, respectively (p=0.003). Similar to the NLR, cut-off values, sensitivity and specificities were calculated for FS diagnosis in the ROC curve analysis within the 1/RPR index. CONCLUSIONS: NLR and 1/RPR indexes are cheap and easily accessible hemogram parameters that can contribute to the diagnosis of FS. INTRODUCTION: IgA vasculitis is the most common vasculitis during childhood and gastrointestinal system involvement and renal involvement effect disease course. So we aim to evaluate the relationship between hematological parameters and clinic of patients diagnosed as IgA vasculitis. MATERIALS and METHODS: Study population included the children diagnosed as Ig A vasculitis in Pediatric Nephrology outpatient clinic. We recorded demographic information, clinical findings, laboratory results and ultrasonography results. Leucocyte count, thrombocyte count, mean platelet count (MPV), red cell distribution width (RDW), total neutrophil count, total lymphocyte count, sedimentation, C -reactive protein (CRP), hematuria and/or proteinuria, renal function tests and ultrasonography results were recorded. Ratio of neutrophil and lymphocyte was calculated. RESULTS: Of patients 73% had joint involvement, 52% had organ involvement, 35% had gastrointestinal system involvement, 20% had renal involvement. Mean neutrophil count and ration of neutrophil/lymphocyte were higher in patients with organ involvement than without organ involvement. Mean neutrophil count, RDW and CRP levels were higher in patients with renal involvement than without renal renal involvement. As a result hematological parameters at admission may predict oragan, gastrointestinal system and renal involvement. Especially higher neutophil and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio in patients with organ, gastrointetinal system and renal involvement and higher RDW and CRP levels in patients with renal involvement were significant. Male sex and RDW levels were risk factors for renal involvement. CONCLUSIONS: Hematological parameters at admission may predict the cases with organ, gastrointestinal system and renal involvement. Especially higher ratio of neutrophil/lymphocyte in cases with organ, gastrointestinal system and renal involvement support the role of neutrophils in disease pathogenesis. Objective: To study the content of nerve growth factor (NGF), interleukin (IL)-8 in the urine, mast cells, and white blood cells in a biopsy of the bladder and the relationship between them in women with interstitial cystitis/bladder syndrome (IC/BPS). Materials and Methods: Forty-one women with IC/BPS (mean age: 46.6±14.0 years) and 20 women without IC/BPS (mean age: 35.3±9.7 years) were examined in this study. Cystoscopy with hydrodistension was performed. NGF and IL-8 were determined in the urine by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The number of mast cells and leukocytes was determined in biopsy specimens of the bladder wall. Statistical calculations were performed in Excel 2016 (SPSS 15.0). Results were processed using the Pearson's correlation coefficient to describe the relationships between variables. Results: Diffuse submucosal hemorrhages (43.9%) were more common. The level of NGF was 142.26±134.906 ng/mL, IL-8 was 51.3±9.36 pg/mL, and lymphocytes (238.0±166.42) and mast cells (82.27±38.76) predominated in the biopsy specimens. A correlation of the mast cells with the plasma cells (r=-0.228), neutrophils (r=-0.227), and lymphocytes (r=-0.156) was observed. NGF and IL-8 correlated with mast cells, neutrophils, and plasma cells with weak multidirectional bonds. Conclusion: With IC/BPS, the concentration of NGF and IL-8 in the urine is increased. In biopsy specimens, mainly lymphocytes and mast cells, the correlation of NGF and IL-8 with mast cells, neutrophils, and plasma cells is weak. Background: Food poisonings are a health problem of concern to the general community and are constantly encountered in emergency departments. This study was intended to describe our experience of 57 cases of urticaria developing following strawberry consumption. Materials and Methods: The records of 57 cases of urticaria developing following strawberry consumption were examined retrospectively. Sex (male, female), age (months), strawberry consumption status, number of strawberries eaten, emergency department presentation symptoms, and laboratory tests were examined from file records. Patients found to have consumed strawberries were enrolled as the study group (Group 1), and children of a similar age presenting to our hospital for routine child health checks were recruited as the study group (Group 2). Results: Forty (70.2) of the patients in Group 1 were girls and 17 (29.8%) were boys, with a mean age of 130.7 ± 7.05 (117-143) months. Ninety-eight (67.1%) of the cases in Group 2 were girls and 48 (32.9%) were boys, with a mean age of 132.1 ± 7.05 (120-144) months. Analysis of emergency department presentations revealed that the most common symptom was itching and body rash in 20 (35.1%) cases. Comparison of complete body count parameters revealed statistically significant differences in terms of white blood cell count, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, basophil, eosinophil, mean platelet volume, and platelet count values. Conclusion: It is important to inquire into foods consumed at differential diagnosis of eruptions occurring simultaneously in several individuals in communal living areas. Background: The most common cause of morbidity and mortality in childhood is head injuries. Various protocols have been described for brain tomography (BT) in children with head trauma. Because clinical evaluations come to thefore in these, it may be difficult to decide for brain tomography necessity due to inappropriate, exaggerated patient complaint or excessive workload intensity in emergency departments. In our study, we aimed to investigate whether neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLO) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLO) can be a guide in decision-making of necessity in patients with minor pediatric head trauma. Materials and Methods: The files of 195 patients who were admitted to our hospital emergency department with an isolated minor pediatric head injury between January 1, 2015 and October 31, 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups according to CT result: Patients with minor pathology in CT (n = 96 patients, Group 1) and patients with normal CT results (n = 99, Group 2). Patients in group 1 were also divided into two groups according to their medical and surgical treatment. Routine hematological parameters were compared between the groups. Results: When compared to group, neutrophil count, leukocyte count, NLO and PLO were significantly higher in group 1 (p <0.05, for all). In subgroup analysis; patients who required surgical treatment were significantly higher NLO and PLO levels than patients who required medical follow-up in group 1 (p <0.05 for all). In the Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, it was found that NLO ≥ 1.74 predicted minor head trauma with a sensitivity of 88% and specificity of 81%, while PLO was ≥ 108.1 predicted it with a sensitivity of 69% sensitivity and specificity of 67%. Conclusion: The increase of NLO and PLO may be a guide for detecting the necessity of BT in minor head traumas. Background: Behçet's disease is an autoimmune, chronic, inflammatory, multisystemic disease. Although oral aphthae, genital ulcers, skin lesions and uveitis are commonly seen in the disease, vasculitis is the main pathological finding. There is no laboratory finding specific to Behçet's disease. The levels of various routine parameters such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein have been shown to be high in Behçet's disease, however, the change in these parameters is not always consistent with clinical activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between Behçet's disease and ischemiamodified albumin, methylglyoxal and serum prolidase activity. Materials and Methods: 35 Behçet patients and 35 controls were included in to the study. Serum ischemia-modified albumin levels and prolidase activity were measured spectrophotometrically (Perkin Elmer Lambda 25 UV/Vis, US) and serum methylglyoxal levels were measured by Thermo Ultimate 3000 Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Results: In the Behcet group, serum ischemia-modified albumin (p <0.001), prolidase, methylglyoxal (p <0.001), neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (p = 0.011), platelet lymphocyte ratio (0.015), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (p = 0.047), erythrocyte distribution width (p=0.021), neutrophil (p=0.007) levels were found to be significantly higher than the control group, whereas mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration value was found to be significantly lower than the control group (p = 0010). Conclusions: Serum ischemia modified albumin, methylglioxal levels and prolidase activity were statistically significantly different in the Behçet group compared to the control group. Objectives: Some hemogram parameters, which may be indicative of inflammation and hypoxemia, have been shown to be related to epilepsy and stroke disease in previous studies. The present study aims to investigate whether hemogram parameters are indicative of inflammation in late-term epilepsy after ischemic stroke. Methods: Twenty-seven patients with late-onset seizures after an ischemic stroke who were followed-up in our stroke outpatient clinic were retrospectively analyzed in this study. All demographic characteristics of the patients and hemogram parameters before and after seizures were recorded. Results: The mean age of the patients was 63.4±13 years. Thirteen (48.1%) of the patients were female and fourteen (51.9%) of the patients were male. Hypertension (n=20) was the most common comorbidity in the study group. Subsequently, diabetes mellitus (n=13), coronary artery disease (n=8), atrial fibrillation (n=7), chronic renal failure (n=4), hyperlipidemia (n=4) and previous stroke (n=3) were seen. When the hemogram parameters were compared before and after seizure, no difference was observed between hemoglobin (p=0.329), platelet (p=0.313), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (p=0.70) and platelet lymphocyte ratios (p=0.195). However, red blood cell distribution width (RDW) (p=0.042), mean platelet volume (MPV) (p=0.001) was statistically significant. RDW was statistically higher after the seizure (before seizure: 14.3, after seizure: 15.1, p=0.04), MPV was statistically higher before the seizure (before seizure: 9.8 after seizure: 8.8, p=0.001). Conclusion: Several previous studies have shown different results for MPV and RDW in epilepsy and ischemic stroke patients. In our study, MPV values before seizures were thought to be due to inflammation in acute stroke, and high levels of RDW after a seizure may be due to post-seizure hypoxia. Background: Hyperthyroidism is defined as subnormal (usually undetectable) serum thyrotropin (TSH) with elevated serum levels of free triiodothyronine (free T3) and / or free thyroxine (free T4). Endogenous hyperthyroidism is most commonly due to Graves' disease (GD) or nodular thyroid disease. GD is an autoimmune disease that involves mostly the thyroid gland, the eyes and rarely the skin. The disease is generally recognized by symptoms related to hyperthyroidism. Anti-thyroid medications are used in its treatment, and these medications have anti-inflammatory features besides thyroid hormone synthesis. Thrombocyte/lymphocyte (TLR) and neutrophil/lymphocyte (NLR) rates are systemic inflammatory markers that are obtained from routine blood count, inexpensive and repeatable. It is aimed to evaluate the rates of TLR and NLR before and after treatment in hyperthyroidism. Materials and Methods: The retrospective records of the patients who were admitted to Harran University Medical Faculty Endocrinology Polyclinic were examined, and patients who were diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and started medical treatment were included in the study. Patients with active infection and hemorrhagic pathology were excluded from the study. Laboratory results of the patients at the time of diagnosis and results after 3-6 months were evaluated. It was planned to compare NLR and TLR values before and after medical treatment. Results: In the GD group, there was an increase in TSH, fT3, fT4 leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte and hemoglobin levels before and after treatment, and this increase was statistically significant. Nevertheless, there was a significant increase in TSH, fT3, fT4 values in the toxic nodular goiter (TNG)/ multinodular goiter (MNG) group, while there was no significant difference in leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte and hemoglobin levels before and after treatment. In the GD group, NLR of after treatment was significantly higher than before, but no significant difference was observed in the TLR. Conclusions: GD, which is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, can change hematological parameters with various mechanisms. Background: The aim of this study was to compare the hemogram parameters of patients with ectopic pregnancy (EP) and healthy intrauterine pregnancy. Materials and Methods: Between January 2013 and January 2017, the demographic data of patients with first-trimester intrauterine pregnancy and patients with a diagnosis of tubal EP issue in a tertiary center, and white blood cell count (WBC), hemoglobin (Hgb), hematocrit (Hct), neutrophil and lymphocyte count, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet count (PLT), platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and mean platelet volume (MPV) values on complete blood count were recorded and compared with each other. Results: A total of 718 patients with ectopic pregnancies and 937 patients with healthy intrauterine pregnancies were included in the present study. Between groups, age, gravida, parity, and abortion in the group with EP (study group) were monitored significantly higher (p <0.001), the gestational week was found significantly higher in the control group (p <0.001). Hgb, Hct and MPV values of the groups were monitored significantly higher in the Control Group (p<0.001), and no significant differences were detected between the WBC, PLT, NLR and PLR values of both groups. Conclusions: As a result, only the MPV value was found significant among the hemogram parameters in predicting ectopic pregnancy. In this study, NLR and PLR values were not found significant in the diagnosis of EP. Prospective studies with larger participants are needed to investigate more possible relationships with hemogram, NLR and PLR values in EP diagnosis and treatment protocols. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study aims to investigate the correlations between Pfapa (Pf) syndrome or following with Pfapa syndrome diagnosed with neutrophil to lymphocyt ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR). Material and Method: The study included 30 patients (16 males, 14 females; mean age 3.33 years; range 1 to 21 years) diagnosed as Pfapa (Pf group) and 30 healthy individuals (15 males, 15 females; mean age 4.01 years; range 1 to 23 years) (control group). Neutrophil to lymphocyte and PLR ratio values of Pf and control groups were calculated and statistically compared. Results: Mean NLR value was 2.21 in the Pf group and 1.75 in the control group with a statistically significant difference (p=0.001). Mean PLR value was 120.76 in the Pf group and 109.82 in the control group with a statistically insignificant difference (p=0.073). Conclusion: Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio value may be used as a novel marker that is easily administered in patients with Pfapa Syndrome and obtained with low-cost tests. Objective: Laparoscopic colon surgery has the clinical benefits of short hospital stay, less pain after surgery and early return of intestinal function. However, hemodynamic changes may occur in the abdominal organs due to prolonged operation time and increased intra-abdominal pressure compared to open surgery. Methods: In this study, we compared the results of laparoscopic colon surgery with the results of open colon surgery in terms of the effects on the abdominal organs and the changes in acute phase reactants. Results: Patients who underwent colon surgery due to benign and malignant diseases in gastrointestinal surgery department between January 2015 and January 2018 were evaluated. Age, sex, operative time, preoperative and postoperative 24th hour blood values (neutrophil, platelet, albumin, alanine transferase, aspartate transferase, total billirubin, urea, creatinine, c-reactive protein) were compared between the two groups. Operative time in group I (open surgery) was significantly lower than group II (laparoscopic surgery) (p < 0.05). In group I, postoperative c-reactive protein (CRP) increase was significantly lower than group II (p<0.05). In group I, postop albumin decrease was significantly higher than group II (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although the operation time was longer in colorectal surgery, there was no significant impairment in renal and liver function in laparoscopic surgery compared to open surgery. Objective: It is stated that there must be inflammation and irritation in the nerve root in order to develop symptoms in the presence of disc herniation and spinal stenosis. In this study, it was aimed to reveal the inflammatory difference between these two diseases by using neutrophil lymphocyte ratio and platelet lymphocyte ratio which are accepted as markers of systemic inflammation in single level lumbar disc herniation and multi-level lumbar spinal stenosis patients. Methods: Fifty patients (31 female, 19 male) with a single lumbar disc herniation, 50 patients (34 female, 16 male) with lumbar spinal stenosis and 50 healthy controls (33 female, 17 male) was included in the study.The complete blood count of the three groups were recorded retrospectively from the hospital data. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of neutrophil lymphocyte ratio and platelet lymphocyte ratio (p <0.001, p = 0.003, respectively). The values of the control group were lower than the other groups. In addition, it was detected that the lumbar spinal stenosis group had higher neutrophil lymphocyte ratio and there was a statistically significant difference with lumbar disc herniation group (p <0.001). Conclusion: Neutrophil lymphocyte ratio and platelet lymphocyte ratio are the new markers that can be easily applied to evaluate inflammation in nerve tissue and calculated from low-cost complete blood count data. Objectives: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is among the most effective surgical interventions in the long-term prevention of morbid obesity. Stapler line leaks and stapler line bleedings are important complications, which affect morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to determine the role of plasma presepsin levels for detection of stapler leaks. Methods: Sixty patients with LSG due to morbid obesity and 40 controls were included in this prospective study, which was carried out between April 2016 and July 2016 in our clinic. Patients were evaluated by a multidisciplinary team before surgery in accordance with the protocol of our hospital. Blood samples were obtained from patients without any medical treatment 12 hours before operation and 1st, 3rd, and 5th days postoperatively. Plasma presepsin levels, along with white blood counts (WBC, leukocyte), C-reaktive protein (CRP) and Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), were evaluated in patients who had sleeve gastrectomy line leakage. Results: In cases with complications, postoperative leukocyte count, CRP, NLR and presepsin measurements on the 1., 3. and 5. day were found higher than the group without complications. The predictive level of presepsin (p=0.006), CRP (p=0.023) and NLR (p=0.035) was found significantly higher than leukocyte (p<0.05). Conclusions: Our study indicates a role of presepsin levels in the detection and follow up of stapler line leaks following LSG. Increased levels of presepsin, especially on the first day of surgery, may play an important role for early detection of possible postoperative complications without clinical reflection. Objective: Neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) -- Platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR), erythrocyte distribution change (RDW), mean platelet volume (MPV) levels are an indicator of systemic inflammation. Recent studies have shown that these values are associated with many cardiovascular diseases, malignancies, rheumatic diseases, infectious diseases, prognosis and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in leukocyte, neutrophil, platelet, NLR, PLR, MPV and RDW levels in patients with systemic chronic inflammatory disease psoriasis patients who reached the PASI75 value before the systemic treatment and at the 12th week of the treatment. Methods: The hematological parameters of 60 patients with chronic plaque psoriasis who were treated with methotrexate (Mtx)-Cyclosporin-Acitretin-NBUVB-Infliximab and Adalimumab were investigated. Results: The initial PASI values of the patients were 16.68 ± 6.5 (Min: 6.6, Max: 29.6). Post-treatment leukocyte, neutrophil and thrombocyte averages decreased significantly (p = 0.011; p <0.001; p <0.001), but there was no statistically significant difference between pre-treatment and post-treatment lymphocytes, MPV and RDW averages (each p> 0.05). After treatment, NLR and PLR averages were found to be statistically lower than the pre-treatment averages (p = 0.043; p = 0.009). When compared to the pre-and post-treatment average, Mtx was effective on neutrophil, platelet and RDW, Acitretin and cyclosporine were effective on neutrophil and MPV. Conclusion: Significant differences in NLR and PLR levels after treatment are similar to those in the literature. Objective: In this study we have shown that there is a marker associated with systemic inflammation; The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV) and Erythrocyte distribution volume (RDW) and Ranson Criteria showing the severity of acute pancreatitis (AP) at the time of presentation. Methods: The data of the patients who were diagnosed with AP between January 2017 and November 2018 were retrospectively obtained. A total of 139 patients (82 biliary and 15 nonbiliary) were included in the study. Hemogram and biochemical parameters, age, gender, co-morbidities and duration of hospitalization were recorded. According to the Ranson Criteria used at the time of admission score < 3 and score ≥ 3 positive and these groups were compared. Results: Of the 139 patients diagnosed with AP, 75 (54%) were male and 64 (46%) were female. 113 of the patients were divided into two groups according to the Ranson criteria. The mean age was 61 ±20 years in the mild AP group and 70 ±13 years in the severe AP group. MPV (P <0.001), NLR (P <0.001) values were significantly different between the groups. In the correlation analysis; there was a positive correlation between NLR and ranson score (r = 0.253 p <0.01). Linear regression analysis showed that, NLR and PLR were independent predictors of acute pancreatitis. Objective: Obstructive Sleep Apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a disease characterized by recurrent complete (apnea) or partial (hypopnea) upper respiratory tract obstructions episodes during sleep and often a decrease in blood oxygen saturation. Night hypoxias and sympathetic activity increase of arousals in OSAS are thought to stimulate that endothelial dysfunction and hypercoagulability. Materials and Methods: In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the relationship between the severity of the disease and the night hypoxia severity with hemogram parameters in patients diagnosed with OSAS who examined in our clinics. A total of 94 cases were included in the study, including 24 controls, 24 mild, 23 moderate, and 23 severe OSAS. Results: The mean and minimum oxygen saturation values in polisomnography with the number of neutrophils and neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L) ratio were negatively correlated in the mild and severe OSAS groups. A negative correlation was observed between erythrocyte distribution width (EDW) and, mean oxygen saturation and minimum oxygen saturation in moderate and severe OSAS. When the mean and minimum oxygen saturation with regression analysis of EDW and N/L ratio were examined in each three groups; the 1 unit decrease in the minimum oxygen saturation increases the N/L ratio by 0.5-fold (p=0.02) in the mild OSAS, 0.5-fold (p=0.01) in the severe OSAS and it increases the EDW by ratio 0.5-fold (p=0.02) in the moderate OSAS. The 1 unit decrease in the mean oxygen saturation increases the N/L ratio by 0.4- fold (p=0.04) and the EDW by 0.8-fold (p=0.001) in the severe OSAS. Conclusion: As long as the OSAS severity increases, it is determined that the hematocrit values of patients increasing. However, as patients' sleep desaturation increase, we can see that EDW, the number of neutrophils, and N/L ratio also increasing. This situation suggests that the local inflammation caused by both mechanical stress and ischemiareperfusion cycles in the respiratory tract in OSAS is a consequence of spillage into the systemic circulation. The aim of this study was to monitor role of insomnia on some physiological variables in a man who had 13 years insomnia. In this case report, we had a case with 27 years old, 64 kg body mass index, 167 cm height and 13 years insomnia that participated voluntarily, and performed several physiological and performance variable tests. The major results for performance measures are as follows: bench press strength 80 kg, leg press strength 180 kg, running-based anaerobic sprint test 44.3 sec, 60 m speed 9.63 sec, 4x9 m shuttle run 10.36 sec, vertical jump 53 cm, sit ups 40 rep/min, and sit and reach test 94 cm. The major results also for biochemical measures are as follows: neutrophils 55.1%, lymphocytes 37.5%, monocytes 2.9%, eosinophils 4.2%, basophils 0.3%, fasting blood sugar 92 mg/dL, high density lipoprotein 35 mg/dL, low density lipoprotein 92 mg/dL, C-reactive protein <2 mg/L, ımmunoglobulin E 99.9 IU/mL, testosterone 5.05 ng/mL, insulin 3.7 uIU/mL, adrenocorticotropic hormone 21 pg/mL, cortisol 14.5 ug/dL, and growth hormone 0.05 ng/mL. The results of our case on the physical performance and biochemical tests in this study was generally in normal range and immune system, hormonal secretion and complete blood count were in a good points. Objective: In spite of all efforts, prostate cancer is still the 2nd highest cause of cancer-related deaths in men. For this reason new developments are needed in diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of prostate cancer. Neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L) ratio is a cheap and effective parameter used for research into many solid tumors; but there are not enough studies on the reliability of this parameter in prostate cancer. In this study we researched the efficacy of N/L ratio in localized prostate cancer. Materials and Methods: Between March 9, 2012 and April 23, 2017, the data of 140 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy with localized prostate cancer were screened retrospectively. The patients' ages, preoperative prostate specific antigen (PSA) and N/L ratio, pathologic stage, pathologic Gleason score, tumor volume, lymph node involvement, surgical margin positivity and presence or absence of 3rd month biochemical recurrence were noted. The correlations between N/L ratio with age, PSA, pathologic parameters, surgical margin positivity and biochemical recurrence were investigated. Results: The mean age of patients was 63.0±5.9 years, mean PSA value was 10.8±8.5 ng/mL and mean N/L ratio was 2.5±1.9. There was no correlation found between N/L ratio and PSA, pathologic stage, Gleason score, lymph node involvement, tumor volume, surgical margin positivity and biochemical recurrence (p>0.05). Conclusion: In our study investigating 140 patients with localized prostate cancer, we did not identify any correlation between N/L ratio and PSA, surgical stage and Gleason score, surgical margin positivity, and 3rd month biochemical recurrence. When the literature is investigated, it appears that N/L ratio is effective for metastatic prostate cancer. To provide a more accurate judgment of the role of N/L ratio in localized prostate cancer, there is a need for new studies with broader patient series. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Adjacent organ invasion is frequently observed in cases of gastric cancer which is often diagnosed in advanced stages in the Western countries. It is aimed to evaluate the effects of gastrectomy with multivisceral resection on health status and survival of patients with locally advanced gastric cancer. Methods: The prospectively recorded data of 445 operated patients in the General Surgery Clinic at Dokuz Eylül University due to gastric cancer were reviewed. A total of 164 patients with locally invasive tumor detected during laparotomy or those in pT4 status according to post-resection pathologic staging were included in the study. Results: One hundred and twenty patients underwent gastrectomy, 24 patients underwent gastrectomy with multivisceral resection, and 20 patients underwent palliative procedure. The patient groups were compared for demographic data, tumor location, preoperative biochemical analysis, hemoglobin values, and survival. The patients with palliative procedures were found to be significantly disadvantaged in terms of survival. There were no differences in the rates of R0 resection and postoperative complication between multivisceral resection group and only gastrectomy group. It was determined that survival of patients with multivisceral resection was significantly longer than palliative surgery patients. Conclusion: Multivisceral resection in patients in whom R0 resection is possible, in those with a platelet/lymphocyte ratio of <130, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio of <2.4, and with fewer than six metastatic lymph nodes, may provide increased survival periods without additional morbidity burden in experienced hands. Aim: Non ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) is one of the most common presentations of coronary arterial disease (CAD). Syntax II score (SSII) is a recently developed scoring system consisting two anatomical and six clinical variables which is used to predict mortality of patients with complex CAD. Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) basically shows basal inflammatory response. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship between NLR and CAD severity using Syntax score (SS) and SSII in NSTEMI patients. Material and Method: Consecutive 271 NSTEMI patients who referred to Kafkas University between February 2015 and June 2016 and underwent coronary angiography have been included in this study. Peripheral venous blood samples were taken from all patients. Hemogram parameters including NLR, biochemical parameters and cardiac biomarkers were evaluated. SS and SSII were calculated from recorded coronary angiograms. Results: The study population consisted of 194 NSTEMI patients. Due to the fact that there was no definitive previous classification of SSII, the patients were divided into 2 groups according to median SSII value. (SSII<31.5 low score group [n=97] and >31.5 high score group [n=97]. NLR was significantly higher at SSII high score group than low score group 3.22 (2.30-4.86) vs 4.05 (2.83-7.21) p=0.004). While there was no correlation between NLR and SS (r=0.023, p=0.759), there was a correlation between NLR and SSII (r=0.218, p=0.002). Therefore correlation analysis was performed between NLR and SSII components. Our analysis demonstrated that there was a correlation between NLR and left ventricular ejection fraction (r=-0.161, p=0.026), as well as between NLR and creatinine clearance (r=-0.161, p=0.025). However, there was no correlation with other parametric components of SSII. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that there was a correlation between NLR and SSII, but no correlation between NLR and SS. High NLR can predict that patients have high SSII scores, and this prediction is related to comorbidities rather than anatomical score system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: It has been shown that the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (N/L ratio) is associated with cardiovascular events and mortality. In this study, we investigated the N/L ratio in patients with coronary artery ectasia (CAE). Study design: Fifty patients diagnosed with CAE using coronary angiography were included in the study (29 male, 21 female; mean age, 51.1+-7.1 years). The control group consisted of 28 patients who had normal coronary arteries as determined by coronary angiography (16 male, 12 female; mean age, 49.5+-9.4 years). Basal characteristics were recorded. The number of ectatic segments was noted. Hematologic parameters were measured and the N/L ratio was calculated. Results: The N/L ratio was significantly higher in the CAE group compared with control group (median [25-75% percentile] 2.2 [1.6-3.0] vs. 1.8 [1.4-2.0], p=0.014, respectively). Objectives: Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) has been defined as a dilated artery luminal diameter that is at least 50% greater than the diameter of the normal portion of the artery. Isolated CAE is defined as CAE without significant coronary artery stenosis and isolated CAE has more pronounced inflammatory symptoms. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is widely used as a marker of inflammation and an indicator of cardiovascular outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease. We examined a possible association between NLR and the presence of isolated CAE. Study design: In this study, 2345 patients who underwent coronary angiography for suspected or known ischemic heart disease were evaluated retrospectively. Following the application of exclusion criteria, our study population consisted of 81 CAE patients and 85 age- and gender-matched subjects who proved to have normal coronary angiograms. Background and Design: It has been demonstrated that neutrophil and platelet count to lymphocyte ratio may be a useful predictor of systemic inflammation and with prognosis of many cardiovascular diseases, malignancies and chronic inflammatory diseases. To the best of our knowledge, there are no studies investigating neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and mean platelet volume (MPV) values together within the context of psoriasis, a chronic and systemic inflammatory disease. Materials and Methods: In this study, we evaluated 320 patients with psoriasis vulgaris followed up in our outpatient clinic and 200 healthy controls. Results: Leukocyte, neutrophil, platelet, MPV, NLR and PLR values in patients with psoriasis were significantly higher, and lymphocyte count, on the other hand, was significantly lower than in controls. No significant difference was found in MPV, NLR and PLR values between patients with or without a family history and nail and joint involvement. Conclusions: These parameters may be used as cheap and easily applicable methods in predicting which psoriasis patients are under the risk of cardiovascular disease. PLR is a better inflammation marker than MPV and NLR in patients with psoriasis. We did not observe a significant relationship of MPV, NLR and PLR values with disease characteristics, such as severity of disease, joint involvement, nail involvement and duration of disease in patients with psoriasis. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of renal biomarkers (NGAL, KIM-1, IL-18, and Cystatin-C) for the diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients in intensive care unit (ICU). Material and Method: We conducted our study in İstanbul University İstanbul Medical Faculty Intensive Care Unit. The duration of the study was planned to be one month, during this period, we included all consecutive patients who were older than 18 years of age and who stayed longer than 48 hours in our ICU. Twenty-four patients were included and 144 measurements were performed in these patients. Patients who had AKI at the admission, patients who had AKI during ICU stay and patients who never had AKI, were included to the study. Patients were divided into two groups; the first group was consisted of patients who never had AKI during ICU stay and it was considered as control group, the second group was consisted of patients who had AKI during ICU stay or patients who had AKI prior to ICU admission. NGAL, KIM-1, IL-18 and cystatin C levels were measured every day. Results: KIM-1 (p<0.01), NGAL (p<0.01), IL-18 (p<0.05) and Cystatin-C (p<0.01) levels were found significantly higher than their control groups for patients with AKI. In our study we were investigated the in vitro effects of therapeutic concentrations of vancomycin (40 μg/ml), daptomycin (60 μg/ml), linezolid (19 μg/ml), levofloxacin (7 μg/ml), fusidic acid (36 μg/ml) and meropenem (24 μg/ml) on the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) functions (phagocytic and intracellular killing activity) in hemodialysis patients. PMNs were isolated from venous blood by ficoll-hypaque gradient centrifugation method. Phagocytic activity and intracellular killing activity were assayed by modified Alexander's method. MDA level was detected by Beuge method which is as an indicator of lipid peroxidation. All results was evaluated by statisticaly. Vancomycin, daptomycin, linezolid, levofloxacin, fusidic acid and meropenem at therapeutic concentrations did not affect both PMN functions of HD patients before and after HD (p>0.05). It was observed that vancomycin, levofloxacin, fusidic acid and meropenem at therapeutic concentrations increased PMN's MDA levels of HD patients before HD but decreased MDA levels after HD (p<0.05). Aim: Neutrophil to lymphocite ration (NLR) is cheap and feasible indicator of inflammation. In this study, we aimed to investigate to the realtionship between NLR and coronary artery ectasia (CAE). Material And Methods: 64 patients with CAE and 62 patients with normal coronary arteries were selected among 8250 coronary angiogrphies performed between 2008 and 2012. NLR of both groups were compared from blood samples drawn prior to coronary angiography. Results: No significant between groups with regard to sex, age, hypertension, smoking and drugs (p>0.005). Objective: Hypothyroidism, whether overt or subclinical, has multiple effects on the cardiovascular system. Neutrophil-lymphocyte (N/L) rate is closely related to cardiovascular disorders and atherosclerosis. Our study aimed to assess N/L rate and carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) in patients with overt and subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH). Methods: The study included 36 patients with SCH and 28 patients with overt hypothyroidism (OH) as well as 30 healthy controls. CIMT, thyroid hormone levels, complete blood count and lipid parameters were measured in all subjects. Correlation analysis and linear regression analysis were performed for N/L rate. Results: Mean CIMT was 0.51 ± 0.15, 0.58 ± 0.16, 0.67 ± 0.24 mm in control, SCH, and OH groups, respectively. CIMT of OH patients was high compared with control subjects (P < 0.05). CIMT of SCH patients were not different compared with control subjects and OH patients (P > 0.05). It was no correlation that CIMT between N/L ratio (p > 0.05). Objective: Today it is known that frequently used antineoplastic agents, analgesics and antibiotics affect the immune system cells and can modify polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) functions such as phagocytosis, lymphocyte proliferation and production of various cytokines. In this study we investigated the effect of antidepresssant drugs on PMN functions, serum folic acid, vitamin Bl2, zinc, copper levels and hematological parameters in the patients with major depression (MD). Material and Method: PMNs were isolated by Ficoll-Hypaque gradient centrifugation method. Phagocytosis and intracellular killing activity were assayed by modifying Alexander's method. Serum folic acid, vitamin B12, copper and hematology parameters were detected with the biochemical analyzer. Serum zinc levels were measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometer. Results: White blood cell (WBC), neutrophil counts (NE) significantly increased after 2 months of antidepressant drug treatment (p<0.05). The phagocytic activity of PMN of MD patients was found same as healthy volunteers, the intracellular killing activity was found lower than that of healthy volunteers. The PMN's phagocytic activity after one and two months of antidepressant drug treatment insignificantly increased and the intracellular killing activity also insignificantly increased after one month of treatment when compared with those before treatment. The results were not found statistically significant. Serum folic acid, vitamin B12, zinc and copper levels were found in reference value intervals compared to those before treatment. Conclusions: This study showed that WBC, NE counts in patients with MD significantly increased in the reference value intervals after antidepressant drug treatment (p<0.05). Objective: Phyllodes tumor is a rare fibroepithelial neoplasia of the breast. Tumors are classified according to the histological criteria as benign, borderline, malignant groups. Criteria used to discriminate benign/malignant cases are stromal cytological atypia, stromal hypercellularity, mitotic rate, stromal overgrowth, and tumor margins. We designed this study retrospectively to see the validity of these criteria for our case group and investigate whether we could add any new criteria. Material and Method: We included 22 cases diagnosed as phyllodes tumor from our archives. Pathology records were used for age, tumor site, macroscopic size. The Hematoxylin-Eosin stained slides were reviewed according to the defined criteria. Additionally leaf like growth pattern, stromal hyalinization, calcification, stromal giant cells, stromal neutrophil leukocyte, and mononuclear lymphocytic infiltrate were recorded qualitatively (present/absent) and numerically (mild, moderate, severe). We examined the differences between benign and malignant groups with the Mann-Whitney U and chi-square tests. Results: The previously defined criteria were statistically significant but stromal giant cells, stromal hyalinization, calcification, stromal neutrophil and mononuclear lymphocytic infiltrate intensity were not statistically significant in determining the benign-borderline-malignant cases. Conclusion: Stromal hypercellularity, moderate/severe stromal cytological atypia, increased mitotic rate, stromal overgrowth and infiltrative tumor margins were observed in malignant phyllodes tumors.
