BUSINESSPEOPLE , *COVID-19 pandemic , *BUSINESS development , *MARRIAGE , *SOCIAL accounting - Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyse coping strategies for dealing with the impact of crisis ('pivots') among low-income entrepreneurs living in a marriage/partnership using the example of the Covid-19 pandemic as a social and economic crisis. We draw on literature that critiques the individualised and masculine conception of entrepreneurship as focused on innovation and profit. Our analysis reveals the diversity of entrepreneurial strategies for coping with a pandemic. Low-income entrepreneurs living in a marriage or partnership interpret their choice of coping strategy primarily in reference to the non-economic aspects of this decision, as a way of legitimising why they do not choose pivots oriented towards business development in times of crisis. During the coping strategy analysis, we took into account the familial and socio-economic context and the business history of the low-income entrepreneur we surveyed. In this way, we show the processual nature of pivoting, in which responses to crises are not ad hoc decisions but are influenced by past experiences of business uncertainty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the semantics and pragmatics of the German keyword "Kollektiv" based on its actual uses in public discourse and by political actors. "Kollektiv" is regarded as a concept of greatsocial significance, yet it is also a most controversial notion. It relates to the universal values and benefits of collectivism such as mutual assistance, solidarity, effective cooperation when coping with difficulties, mutual support and sympathy. However, otherfeatures of collectivism such as having to integrate oneself into the community, setting equal boundaries for individuals, and invading people's privacy activate negative meanings. This governs the evaluation-based polysemy of the keyword. The explanatory approach in this paper was formulated against the background of deontic meaning as a basic concept in semantics to analyze social evaluation of salient lexis. On par with their descriptive meaning, keywords have a deontic meaning component that their denotational interpretability depends on. The study was carried out as corpus-driven discourse analytical research. Discourse analysis proceeded as noncritical linguistic discourse analysis. To provide a functional perspective on Kollektiv, the "Digital Dictionary of the German Language" / "Das Digitale Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache" was used with its two sections of dictionaries and text corpora. Two specialized corpora from the "Digital dictionary" were employed: the "Corona corpus" that contains electronic texts with over 50 mln tokens on the coronavirus pandemic, and the corpus "Political Speeches" containing records of proceedings of the government bodies of Germanspeaking countries and regions as well as transcripts of oral speeches delivered by politicians. We show that the word "Kollektiv"is employed both as description and as evaluation setting up both positive and negative deontics. The deontic polysemy of "Kollektiv" is activated in contextual uses. The conducted study addresses the way in which linguistic forms get integrated in larger activities in the social world and how, through salient lexicalizations in discourse, they open up the perspective to social diversity and polyphony. Fair allocation of scarce medical resources during emergency situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic is a highly challenging task. The pandemic has revealed that age was invoked as a criterion in terms of granting access to medical treatment in some European Union countries such as Italy. This paper analyses whether or not the use of chronological age alone might be justified for any such differential treatment in the event of scarcity. The paper seeks to demonstrate that older persons should not be automatically excluded from receiving access to healthcare which might otherwise amount to direct discrimination under European Union law.

In this paper, the relationship between trade deficit and Corona Virus pandemic is examined using daily data spanning the period February-December, 2020. COVID-19 related variables employed are number of confirmed cases, number of discharged cases, total death cases and tested cases. To control for omitted variable bias, the paper considers inclusion of some economic variables such as exchange rate, inflation rate and interest rate. Using the S-estimation of the Robust Least Square, it is found that total death cases and test cases trigger more trade deficit. Increase in the number of discharged cases necessarily reduces trade deficit due to more active labour force. Depreciation of the naira triggers trade deficit due to short fall in supply and rising costs of importation. Hence, Nigeria should focus more on domestic production, increasing financing of small and medium scale enterprises alongside with adhering to COVID-19 protocol to further boost trade and economic growth.

VOLATILITY (Securities) , *COVID-19 , *RATE of return on stocks , *SARS-CoV-2 , *COVID-19 pandemic , *FINANCIAL markets , *STANDARD & Poor's 500 Index - Abstract
A new type of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), known as SARS-CoV-2 is not only an unprecedented health crisis but it is also expected to become one of the most costly pandemics affecting the global economy in recent history. Recent studies (Apergis and Apergis (2020), Baig vd. (2021), Rai ve Garg (2021), Mazur ve Vega (2021)) show that the contagious effect of the COVID-19 outbreak increases the volatility of financial markets. This paper aims to examine the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the volatility of S&P 500 stock market returns using daily data over the period from January 21, 2020 to April 09, 2021. To this end, the volatility of stock returns is analyzed by using a GARCH-X model. The GARCH-X model allows us to include COVID-19 factor as an exogenous variable in the mean and conditional variance equations. The findings indicate that daily reported COVID-19 cases in the USA have statistically insignificant effect on stock returns in short-term. However, as the results indicate, the COVID-19 outbreak has a positive and statistically significant impact on the volatility of these stock returns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concepts of "sustainability" and "resilience" have become current issues with the emergence of problems such as industrialization, population growth, rapid consumption of resources, and the climate crisis in recent years. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic experience all over the world has also revealed that urban areas where people live extremely together must be planned and transformed in a sustainable and resilient manner. Urban regeneration projects are among the most frequently used tools in the reorganization of urban areas, renewal of aging urban structures. Also, urban regeneration projects are expected to make a significant contribution to designing more sustainable and resilient urban areas. However, in Turkey, it is observed that private property and urban rent issues can be a pressure factor in the re-planning of public and non-public areas in urban regeneration projects. For this reason, private property rights and limits should be determined accurately in urban regeneration projects and new urbanization models. In this paper, it is discussed how private property and urban rent can be handled in urban regeneration according to housing and population densities, what their limitations can be, and how they should be included in legal regulations. MEDICAL personnel , *COVID-19 pandemic , *COVID-19 , *PANDEMICS , *QUESTIONNAIRES , *SOCIAL media , *COVID-19 vaccines - Abstract
During the pandemic that has affected the world, it is also important that healthcare professionals, who are at the forefront, experience the expression of their feelings and thoughts, together with the effort they have shown while using their professional knowledge and skills. In this context, the purpose of this research is to reveal the views and feelings, thoughts and experienced by healthcare professionals. To reach healthcare workers, Izmir was chosen as one of the cities that experienced pandemic intensely, and the question form was used, inspired by the propositions found in Çırakoğlu's (2011) paper published in the Turkish Psychology Journal. Purposeful sampling method was used. A questionnaire to learn their feelings and thoughts about the COVID-19 outbreak was sent to 67 participants. The data was analyzed with the Maxqda Analytics Pro 2018 software, and the results were discussed. The contagiousness of the virus is at the top of the discourse of the healthcare professionals participating in the study regarding the COVID-19 outbreak. Due to the lack of a vaccine or preventive treatment to stop or reduce the transmission, as of the research period, attention is drawn to the fact that individuals maintain distance in isolation and collective areas in order to avoid the contagiousness of the virus. Participants emphasize that the epidemic causes concern to both the society and healthcare workers, and that the studies conducted in the world are delayed in combating the virus. It is thought to give insight into the symbolic representations of the words most frequently used by healthcare professionals regarding the COVID-19 virus. In addition to the prominence of social distance, isolation, quarantine and curfew methods in the fight against the virus, visualization of these methods in social media sharing also constitutes the symbolic representation of the virus. - Abstract
Countries have implemented their own policies during the Covid-19 pandemic process. The aim of this study is to examine the risk of democratic decline as a result of the preventive policies implemented by countries after increasing cases and death rates as well as the rate of virus spread and case fatality rates in the countries. This paper is the first to analyze countries' virus spread and case fatality rates together with their risk values of democratic decline. Data sets from a total of 148 countries can be accessible from publicly available sources. The variables related to the pandemic process management of the selected countries are taken as the government Covid-19 response stringency index and risk of democratic decline. Three-way contingency tables are generated with coronavirus effective reproduction number and the death rate from Covid-19 positive variables. Homogeneous Uniform Association model, which is a special case of the log-linear model with ordinal variables, is used for the contingency tables arranged from the raw data. As a result of this study, making preventive policies more likely to be tightened causes to reduce coronavirus spread rate. In this case, it will make tightening of preventive policies more likely in the countries and the likelihood of loosening of tight policies in the countries will increase as the death rate falls below the average. This paper aims to develop a comprehensive scale within the framework of the Integrated Behavior Model (IBM), which is recommended for the protection of public health during the Covid-19 pandemic period and is the leading physical distancing behavior among health behaviors. Within the scope of the study, an item pool consisting of a total of 109 items was created and the first item analysis was performed in the pilot sample (N= 100). At the end of the pilot study, Physical Distancing Behavior Scale (PDBS) was developed, comprising a total of 39 items. This scale consisted of instrumental attitude, experiential attitude, subjective norms, perceived control, self-efficacy, environmental constraints, knowledge habit, intention, and behavior structures. Af-terwards, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was applied to 322 participants (age: 36.48) resulting in 21 items and five structures including instrumental attitude, experiential attitude, perceived control, self-efficacy, and knowledge. After factor structures according to EFA had been formed, a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted on 472 participants (age: 36,99). The CFA results confirmed 4 constructs consisting of 19 items which are instrumental attitude, experiential attitude, perceived control, and self-efficacy (RMSEA=0.057, GFI=0.93, CFI=0.94, NFI=0.90, X2/df=2.51), Cronbach’s alpha scores of all sub-scales varied between 0.68-0.85. The results revealed that physical distancing behavior has been evaluated through the instrumental attitude, experi-ential attitude, perceived control, and self-efficacy constructs of IBM. In future studies, the scale may also need to be tested with different model studies. As regards the modeling studies that used this scale, examining different samples could guide community-based intervention programs.

COVID-19 pandemic , *SARS-CoV-2 , *STAY-at-home orders , *SOCIAL role , *RUMOR , *SOCIAL problems - Abstract
The pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China reported by the Chinese authorities foreshadow an outbreak caused by a new type of coronavirus. Shortly afterwards, the World Health Organization decleared the outbreak as a pandemic due to its high infection rate and worldwide prevalence. The first diagnosis of coronavirus in Turkey was announced to the public in March, 2020. After then, several precautional meaures in social, economic, legal, religious and military areas have been adopted. In the period of the pandemic disease, several memes, urban legends, rumors, jokes, and myths concerning both the virus itself and its constrained lifestyle released into the social media. Minstrels who are the significant actors of traditional culture have written poems on the pandemic and its effects. The sensitive approaches of the minstrels to the contemporary social problems is closely related to their social role which is loaded them by the minstrelsy tradition. It is seen that the roles of the minstrels such as leading and guiding the society both affects the reasoning of writing poems and has an influence on the contents of these poems. In the quarantine period, minstrels have shared their poems especially through social media networks and Youtube. In this article, mainly the Youtube videos of the minstrels are discussed based on the motivation that Youtube provides them to reach a set of diversified audience relatively to those of existing ones. When evaluating the public opinion on the minstrelsy tradition, the posted comments of the minstrels' videos are also utilized. The large parts of the minstrels' poems refer to how and why the coronavirus appears, how it affects the daily lives, and helplessness of the mankind against to the virus and the pandemic. The poems that advise the public to stay at home and give supporting messages to the healthcare staff have also written by the minstrels. Minstrels have succeeded to be visible to the public by means of performing their poems in electronic platforms inparticular during the period of quarantine. However, considering the historical progress of minstrelsy tradition, it is quite obvious that the minstrels and their products have relatively depreciated and their roles of leading and guiding the public are becoming restricted to a certain set of audience compared to the past. In the context of social roles of minstrels, this paper also discusses the question of what are the reasons that interrupt the efforts of the minstrels who are dealing with the contemporary problems and using the contemporary technology. The audiences of the minstrels' poems have the opinion that the minstrels' wish of eradication of the cruel persons by the virus and being the virus as a kind of divine retribution contradicts to the role of minstrels as leading and guiding the public. It is inferred that the language and the style of the interpretions as well as sometimes the outlook of the minstrels upon the coronavirus pandemic and its effects are reviewed as obsolete by the audiences.
