RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *WORLD War II , *BORDER security , *RESTRAINING orders , *BEST practices - Abstract
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has generated the largest crisis of displaced persons since the Second World War. In order to respond to the protection needs of these people, the EU activated the application of Temporary Protection, which has made it possible to guarantee rights such as access to work, education, health, shelter and maintenance to these people in a short period of time. Spain has been one of the main receiving countries and has implemented temporary protection in a more effective way. Parallel to the temporary application, the EU has been updating its common migration and asylum policy with the approval of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum. This pact has not included the good practices developed during the implementation of temporary protection, focusing on border control. Spain should maintain the positive aspects that have been developed in the application of temporary protection in the elaboration of the national plan for the implementation of the Pact. INTERNATIONAL sanctions , *RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *ECONOMIC sanctions , *SOCIAL impact , *EUROPEAN Union law - Abstract
The European Union, in its beginning, had the objective of promoting economic cooperation, under the premise that commerce generates interdependence between countries, which reduces the possibilities of conflict. However, despite the intention of the UE to mitigate the conflicts, it could not avoid the dispute between Russia and Ukraine, a dispute that is rooted in a complex historical and cultural trajectory. The Russian invasion of Ukraine brought the Council of the European Union to impose sanctions on Russia. The object of study of the present project was to analyze the Council Regulation N°2022/345 of the European Union that establishes sanctions with mostly economic effects, but also has social consequences. The methodology applied was qualitative, using the bibliography review, and was sustained in analytic methods, by exegetic and historical logic. By all counts, it was reflected about if this type of regulations generated an important contribution for the conflict affected country that in this case was Ukraine or if was in fact a historic-cultural conflict disguise between the power allies of the regional bloc, and Russia. With the objective of isolation and limitation for geopolitical purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GLOBAL value chains , *RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *PRICES , *COMMODITY exchanges ,DEVELOPING countries - Abstract
Several international factors influence commodity market behavior, including supply and demand, investor preferences, and global economic risk factors. External shocks, such as political, financial, and natural events, can significantly impact these markets. For example, the US-China trade war, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the COVID-19 pandemic have generated disruptions in Global Value Chains (GVCs), increasing price volatility and uncertainty. Less developed countries, which rely heavily on producing and exporting raw materials, are particularly vulnerable to these disruptions. This paper examines the effects of these shocks, highlighting their significant consequences on the behavior of commodity prices and, to a lesser extent, the functioning of global value chains. RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *ENERGY security , *INTERNATIONAL security , *ECONOMIC policy , *ECONOMIC shock - Abstract
This paper analyses the repercussions that the war in Ukraine since 2022 has had on the European Union (EU) policy of economic globalisation. The Union's comprehensive response to the conflict is examined from different angles, taking in energy insecurity, economic shocks, geopolitical shifts, humanitarian challenges and technological vulnerabilities. In this context, the EU's adaptive resilience is evident on several fronts, such as the integration of its economic policies with security (particularly in critical sectors), its role in the European security architecture and its commitment to incorporating Ukraine into the West. The study expands to include the flexible management of mass migration, tech vulnerabilities, energy resilience, economic stability, geopolitical alliances, humanitarian response action and technological reinforcement. New crises that have erupted this decade, such as COVID-19 and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, have led the European Union (EU) to wake up to the need to expedite certain decision-making processes. This would allow it to play a more geopolitical role on the international stage and move past the traditional European approach of soft power as a means of influence. To do so, it is essential to advance towards greater geopolitical capabilities that enable true strategic autonomy in areas such as security and defence: new challenges must be met with different strategies and instruments. This paper examines the functioning, potential institutionalisation and capacities of the European Political Community (EPC) as a driver of a geopolitical Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *WAR , *NATIONAL emblems , *DISINFORMATION , *TWENTY-first century - Abstract
In an international scenario of political crisis, and with democracies weakened by the impact of populism and disinformation, the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 provides a new scenario for the reactivation of war propaganda strategies. This article analyzes the digital discourse of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on Telegram—a messaging network that favors one-way communication, immediacy, and access to communities of followers—in terms of war propaganda during the first year of the conflict, focusing on variables such as propaganda functions and techniques, the representation of the leader and the enemy, or the use of national symbols. The data-gathering technique is content analysis, which is applied to the study of the 2,075 publications made by the Ukrainian leader in the period analyzed (February 24, 2022-February 23, 2023). Results indicate a strategic orientation towards the internationalization of the conflict and the defense of a management orientation based on the mobilization of Ukraine, as well as personalized leadership and the persistence of techniques and trends of classic war propaganda in the digital political discourse of the 21st century. In February 2022, the so-called Special Military Operation launched by Vladimir Putin activated the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This article seeks to answer why the conflict between Russia and Ukraine can be configured as a fifth-generation war. The research found that the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine can be categorized as a fifth-generation war because the fighting is taking place in cities, which are categorized as the military, political and economic centers of gravity. Furthermore, the confrontation, despite taking place on the traditional plane of warfare, has also involved the fifth domain of warfare, cyberspace, and finally, the involvement of private military companies in the conflict was identified. In this respect, the qualitative methodological approach allows us to analyses the characteristics of fifth generation warfare in the light of an international case study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article in the magazine "Tiempo de Paz" focuses on the topic of migrations and intersectorial discrimination. It highlights that Spain has gone from being a country that generates emigrants to being a recipient, with more than six million residents born in other countries. The importance of seeing migration as an opportunity and not as a threat is emphasized, promoting the respectful integration of diversity and dignity. The crisis of displaced people in Europe due to the Russian invasion in Ukraine is mentioned, and the lack of implementation of good practices in the European Pact on Migration and Asylum is criticized. The restrictive measures framework implemented by the European Union following the Russian invasion of Ukraine includes a number of reporting obligations. Economic operators are obliged to provide certain information regarding restrictive measures to the competent authorities. The reporting obligations are heterogeneous in terms of their subjective and material scope. Failure to comply with the reporting obligations is an infringement that is subject to the administrative sanctioning procedure in Spain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *CRITICAL thinking , *SOCIAL impact , *FINANCIAL crises , *TWENTIETH century , *GAZE - Abstract
The world reality places us before the idea that modem society and its foundations are in crisis. The pandemic and its effects on the comprehensive health, economic crisis and political policy of numerous countries, along with migratory movements, the nationalisms bound, together with the political and social fragility caused by the war in Ukraine, demand not only to know how to act in the present, but also make it essential to raise our gaze and look ahead to illuminate the future. This study reflects on the role of Christian universities in social transformation and their task in the critical reflection of reality. The results of the proposal arise from the convergence and dialogue between the thought of Benedict XVI and Ignacio Ellacuria SJ. The purpose is to focus on the understanding that these great Christian thinkers of the 20th century had of the mission of the university and thus contribute to the reflection that the Global Education Compact calls for. The article addresses the complexity of the global economy in times of war in Ukraine and post-pandemic. It highlights the end of the neoliberal era and the key trends that will define the new scenario. From this starting point, it is necessary for the European Union to develop “strategic autonomy” to address vulnerabilities in energy and technology, promoting the circular economy and a more active international position. The need of a unified European response to challenges is underscored, considering a new economic cycle with slower growth, with the importance of properly addressing the challenges of the European single market, where the role of the Agenda 2030 is absolutely crutial. RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *ELECTRIC power distribution , *WATER storage , *NUCLEAR power plants , *SOCIAL impact - Abstract
Royal Decree-Law 8/2023 adopts measures to address the economic and social consequences derived from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as to alleviate the effects of drought. Title III of the decree is dedicated to energy, establishing measures for the incorporation of renewable energy facilities into the electrical system. Access and connection to electricity transportation and distribution networks are also regulated, as well as self-consumption and decarbonization of the industry. Modifications are introduced to prevent speculative hoarding of network access permits, and guarantees and expiration periods are established for access and connection permits. Additionally, measures to flexibilize electricity supply contracts are maintained, and the support mechanism for electro-intensive industries is extended. The possibility of modifying the list of Just Transition Nodes is also contemplated, and the La Pereda 220 kV transportation network node is granted the status of Just Transition Node. An urgent review of legislation affecting the hydrocarbon sector is foreseen due to the transformation of the market in recent years. Royal Decree-Law 8/2023 establishes measures to address fraudulent practices in the liquid hydrocarbon sector and to comply with the renewable energy objectives established by the European Union Directive. Support measures to mitigate the effects of drought in sectors such as agriculture are also included. Modifications are introduced in the legislation of the electricity and water sectors to promote energy storage and ensure water supply to nuclear power plants. These measures will come into effect on different dates starting from December 29, 2023. [Extracted from the article]

Disinformation is currently one of Europe's greatest challenges. In the past years, the European continent in general and, more precisely, the European Union have been suffering from various disinformation campaigns: such as the one that led to Brexit; the parallel health and disinformation pandemic; or the hybrid propaganda strategy following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In this context, the death of Queen Elizabeth II of England has also been marked by disinformation practices that went viral throughout Europe. Therefore, this research aims to delve into the nature of disinformation regarding the death of the Queen in the timeframe between 8 and 22 September 2022, focusing in three European countries, namely Spain, the United Kingdom and France. For that purpose, the study is based on a content analysis of 76 publications published by fact-checking organisation, as well as open-ended surveys with specialised agents on disinformation. Overall, results show that social networks were the main platform through which misinformative content was disseminated, with Twitter occupying the first position- whereas other previous studies have shown the primacy of Facebook as a source of disinformation. The hoaxes, which generally included images, mainly responded to the typology of misleading and fabricated content established by Wardle (2017). Likewise, the main subject matter of the viral hoaxes was conspiracy theories, focusing on Elizabeth II as the main protagonist. Moreover, the frequency of hoax dissemination was significantly higher during the first week after the death of the monarch and responded to a transnational trend in which the spread of disinformation was adapted to national contexts. In this essay, we analyze how Pope Francis has deepened our understanding of human dignity by focusing on active nonviolence as a way of living in accordance with dignity. Impactful examples of active nonviolence during war are described, such as peace zones in Colombia and the Nonviolent Peace Force in South Sudan. The theological implications of active nonviolence are highlighted, such as the praxis of accompaniment. Cases of nonviolent resistance in South Sudan, Rwanda, Czechoslovakia, and Ukraine are also mentioned, where nonviolent methods have been used to protect civilians, hinder military and political objectives, and bring about political and social changes. The effectiveness of nonviolent resistance is emphasized compared to violent resistance, and specific examples of nonviolent actions carried out by civilians in Ukraine during the Russian invasion in 2022 are mentioned. Furthermore, the theological implication of nonviolent action during war is addressed, and the importance of accompaniment and consistent praxis with human dignity is highlighted. The article "«SHALOM» IN ITS BIBLICAL ASPECTS" explores the biblical understanding of peace in different current contexts, such as war and violence in Ukraine and Israel, as well as the problems that affect the quality of life. The author analyzes the concept of shalom from a relational and existential perspective, and proposes implications for peace and its construction. The relationship between war and poverty is highlighted, and questions are raised about the meaning of peace and how the Bible can contribute to peace and reconciliation. The article also mentions methodological considerations for the study of peace in the Bible, and explores the understanding of peace in the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, peace is related to justice and is understood as the restoration of social and personal order. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is presented as the Prince of Peace and the peace he brings to the world is emphasized. It is mentioned that peace is both a gift and a task, and that human beings have the responsibility to create a just and peaceful community. [Extracted from the article]

Current armed conflicts such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Israel's incursion into the Gaza Strip are mentioned, which have led to serious violations of IHL and human rights. The need for humanitarian actions in public health to address the consequences of war on the affected population is emphasized. [Extracted from the article]

RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *FREEDOM of religion , *PERSECUTION , *RELIGIOUS discrimination , *HUNGER , *KIDNAPPING , *FLOODS , *HAITI Earthquake, Haiti, 2010 - Abstract
The Report on Religious Freedom in the World by the Pontifical Foundation Aid to the Church in Need reveals that discrimination and religious persecution have increased worldwide, especially in countries like India, China, and Pakistan. In Nigeria, the mass kidnappings of students are a cause for concern, while in South Sudan, the situation is disastrous due to a combination of hunger, floods, drought, and growing insecurity. In Mozambique, over 67,000 people have been displaced by jihadist attacks, and in Gaza, the Catholic Church is concerned about the situation of Palestinian Christians. Additionally, the Vatican's work to improve relations with China and the situation of the war in Ukraine is highlighted. In Latin America, the Archbishop of Port-au-Prince speaks about violence and kidnappings in Haiti, while in Nicaragua, the persecution against the Catholic Church continues. RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- - Abstract
This article explores the relationship between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization with Japan and South Korea. NATO's presence has generally been limited to Europe and the North Atlantic but has remained constant since the conflicts in Iraq and Syria (2001-current), however due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine (2022), the Organization after more than twenty-five years has again a conflict near its members. In this sense, given the size of Russia, the perception of threat has not only been limited to Europe, since in Asia, Russia's invasion has raised alarm in China's neighbours, particularly South Korea and Japan, since the success of Russia could increase China's assertiveness. NATO did not consider China a concern until 2022, (Domínguez, 2023) so the role of Tokyo and Seoul as diplomatic and military allies is very important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *WAR , *WEALTH distribution , *ENVIRONMENTAL degradation , *DRUG traffic - Abstract
Issue 61 of the magazine Política y Cultura focuses on war and armed conflicts in the 21st century. It reflects on how violence affects societies at a time when states are reconfiguring themselves to face the challenges of globalization, wealth distribution, environmental deterioration, artificial intelligence, and governance. The issue includes five articles that address armed conflicts from various perspectives, such as the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and the symbiotic relationship between drug trafficking and democratization in Mexico. The Western narrative about Africa is also discussed, and an interview with anthropologist Eduardo Nivón Bolán is presented. The objective of this issue is to contribute to the reflection on war and armed conflicts in the 21st century. [Extracted from the article]

There have been several overlapping crises in North Africa in recent decades. The social contract is in crisis, and this became clear during the antiauthoritarian uprisings of 2011 and 2019. In addition, the region is locked in a socioeconomic crisis that deepened after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and has been aggravated by the global impacts of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This paper underscores the need to reflect on the legitimation of the North African elites in this context, looking at the connection between the domestic and international spheres. It also presents various legitimation strategies that take in the interaction between the domestic and external spaces. This approach seeks to enrich the debate on the relationship between authoritarianism, its legitimation and the international dimension. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RIGHT-wing extremism , *RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *RIGHT-wing populism , *RIGHT-wing extremists , *RADICALISM , *POPULISM - Abstract
The conflagration of February 2022 with the invasion of Ukraine by Russia has been nothing more than the main act of a tragedy that began eight years ago and was forged in the social fracture that originated in Ukraine with the Euromaidan. Positions on whether Russia has reacted to a perceived violation of the status quo by the West, whether through NATO or the EU, or whether it is Russia that acts within an ideological framework that we could define, for convenience, as a neo-imperialist. However, within such debate, there is one aspect that seems capital to us, which is the ideological nature of Vladimir Putin’s current regime. We can perfectly place this regime within the field of the far-right, since it has assumed clear characteristics of radical right-wing populism and has used armed far-right vanguards as a spearhead, both in 2014 and starting in 2022. RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *MARXIST philosophy , *DICTATORSHIP , *LIBERATION theology , *MILITARY government , *PUBLIC sociology - Abstract
The article presents the relevance of Latin American Marxism through the work of Michael Löwy. During his visit to Chile in September 2023, Löwy participated in various academic, political, and cultural activities, where his main contributions in the field of critical sociology, Latin American Marxism, and liberation theology were discussed, among other topics. In addition, there was reflection on the Latin American left, global neo-fascism, and the implications of the war in Ukraine. The article also highlights Löwy's relationship with the government of Salvador Allende and his tribute to the victims of the military dictatorship in his book "Red September". The dossier proposes to establish dialogues with Latin American Marxisms from interdisciplinary and contemporary perspectives. The text presents a series of articles that explore different aspects of Marxism in Latin America. It highlights José Carlos Mariátegui's critique of official Eurocentric and positivist Marxism, and his focus on the importance of Andean indigenous communities in the construction of Peruvian socialism. The work of Alberto Flores Galindo on Mariátegui and his political context in the seventies is also analyzed. Other articles examine the trajectory of Alejandro Lipschutz as an indigenist in Chile, Luis Vitale Cometa's vision of Latin American social formations, and the influence of Marxism on historical studies. Finally, an interview with Michael Löwy about his work and political ideas is presented. [Extracted from the article]

Currently, the use of dermal regeneration matrices in full-thickness burns is widely extended, and numerous studies have shown the improvement in flexibility and elasticity of the resulting skin compared to the use of autologous skin grafts alone. In this article, we present a patient who suffered a deep burn on the dorsal surface of his hand in a military context of the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine. After being evacuated to Spain, he was successfully treated at our centre with a dermal regeneration matrix covered with an autologous skin graft. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prolongation of the war in Ukraine increases its high cost in human lives and other aspects associated with the serious humanitarian crisis, which affects women and girls differently. From a gender and security perspective, the author rejects the war-mongering thesis that the war in Ukraine, caused by Putin's Russia's invasion of a sovereign country, is going to be resolved on the battlefield, with the defeat of one of the the most direct contenders. On the contrary, this prolongation will aggravate the global effects caused by this war, also studying them in the Latin American context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
