Abstract

In this essay, we analyze how Pope Francis has deepened our understanding of human dignity by focusing on active nonviolence as a way of living in accordance with dignity. Impactful examples of active nonviolence during war are described, such as peace zones in Colombia and the Nonviolent Peace Force in South Sudan. The theological implications of active nonviolence are highlighted, such as the praxis of accompaniment. Cases of nonviolent resistance in South Sudan, Rwanda, Czechoslovakia, and Ukraine are also mentioned, where nonviolent methods have been used to protect civilians, hinder military and political objectives, and bring about political and social changes. The effectiveness of nonviolent resistance is emphasized compared to violent resistance, and specific examples of nonviolent actions carried out by civilians in Ukraine during the Russian invasion in 2022 are mentioned. Furthermore, the theological implication of nonviolent action during war is addressed, and the importance of accompaniment and consistent praxis with human dignity is highlighted.
