This study examined the comprehension of expository and narrative texts read on screens, and its association with executive functions, reading habits, and reading media of choice (paper or screen) for study or recreational purposes, in university students. Participants were ninety-eight university students (76.8% women, mean age: M = 20.6, DS = 5.24 years), who completed a screen-based expository and narrative text comprehension task, a computerized executive functions assessment (working memory, cognitive flexibility and inhibition), a survey on reading habits and an author recognition test. Working memory was a general predictor of comprehension, while flexibility was specifically linked to expository text comprehension. Fiction exposure specifically contributed to narrative text comprehension. Students who preferred to study on screens showed better performance on expository text comprehension than those who chose to study on paper. The contribution of executive functions to reading comprehension on screens was similar to that observed in paper-reading studies. The effect of study reading media of choice suggests that practice might compensate the more superficial reading mode that is typically observed in digital media reading studies. The importance of reading at an early age is key to the development of future learning in the short and long term, for this reason an investigation was proposed in the second-year students of the María Piedad Castillo de Levi Educational Unit, which had as. The objective is to propose an educational strategy through reading corners to promote the reading habit in students. It was a descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, in which we worked with 38 people, 35 parents and 3 teachers, obtaining the following results: parents reported that their children do not show interest in reading, they do not read on their own initiative own or enjoy the process, children do not have a vocabulary according to their age, they do not identify their favorite reading topics, they read with difficulty. The dimensions with the best evaluation in children when reading were intonation and dramatization, the lowest results were in the dimension of rhythm. Teachers consider that reading in children is important as a learning tool, the main strategies they use to awaken the pleasure of reading in children are based on selecting striking readings. When students get distracted while reading, most teachers talk to the group explaining what happens after they get distracted. This work examines the reading habit of 7.094 Ecuadorian university students through an online survey. They are analyzed according to gender, the three geographic areas of Ecuador, the undergraduate/postgraduate distinction, and the areas of knowledge. Differences are compared in hours spent per week, number of books read, frequency of library attendance, types of reading done there, number of books purchased/downloaded, and percentage spent reading in free time compared to other activities in the mentioned categories. The students of Arts and Humanities and those of Health Sciences are the ones with the best reading habit. However, the reading habit of the sample as a whole is low, which is why the preparation of professors is necessary to face this problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the design of a model to create the reading habit based on a co-creation process with third and fourth grade students, parents and teachers of the Institución Educativa Municipal José Celestino Mutis (Fusagasugá). The methodology had a mixed approach, using documentary research sources and field work, through surveys to 78 students and 11 parents, interviews to four teachers and six experts, the application of a reading log for 21 days and the cocreation workshop. From the results it was identified that students like to read, enjoy reading textbooks and feel that it contributes to the learning process; however, half of them do not have books at home, and their parents are not motivated to create this habit, so the model proposes to train parents in the formation of this habit. The factors that predetermine and condition reading practices in the digital environment are one of the hottest and most productive research objects. This article studies the factors and contexts that produce rejection of or detachment from the adoption of digital compared with printed texts in the educational environment. For this, a systematic review of the literature was carried out through a critical analysis of the most relevant works addressing this issue from 2005 to the present day. By applying the methodology proposed by Petticrew and Roberts, a sample (n = 28) synthesizing the most relevant findings published to date in relation to the object of study was selected. The results obtained enable us to identify a series of key factors that predetermine the rejection of digital reading that can be ascribed to three essential categories (esthetic, physiological and cognitive, and pragmatic) and nine subcategories (sensory, emotional, complexity of the text, comprehension and retention, physiological aspects, ergonomics, frailty and dependency, accessibility, and interoperability). The research concludes that, although convergence and progressive assimilation in the adoption of digital texts in the educational environment can be observed, there are certain factors that condition the level of acceptance of digital compared with printed reading, and they are perceived as conditioning factors that may hinder the teaching-learning process. Although everyone considers reading to be a basic skill that any person should develop, especially those who are undergoing some kind of training, numerous studies show us a student profile that is not very motivated by the reading practice. These same studies present us with a context full of contradictions. On most occasions, what is desirable is far from reality. In this paper, based on a series of evidence on reading, we would like to invite information and documentation professionals to reflect on some of these contradictions. This study describes family beliefs and practices surrounding early literacy in households from disadvantaged backgrounds and involved 79 families of children aged between 1.5 and 5 years of age from six educational facilities in two regions in southern Chile. Participants answered a questionnaire that aimed to explore family beliefs and practices relating to emergent literacy. The results show high exposure to television during free time and the use of language to regulate behavior. As far as reading practices are concerned, most of those surveyed reported explicitly and systematically teaching their children letters, but most state that they do not read for pleasure. INTRODUCTION. This study aims to know to what extent the variables 'love of reading in the family' and 'parents' educational level' may have an impact on the perception of communicative competence in university students participating in this study. METHOD. 361 Primary Education Degree students coming from two Spanish universities participated in the study. A descriptive-transversal design was used for the study consisting of a contingency analysis. Three competence units were defined through factorial analysis: effective oral communication in the classroom, register adequacy and effective production of written texts. RESULTS. The results clearly show the influence of the variable 'love of reading in the family' in the analyzed dimensions. On the contrary, no relation is detected between these dimensions and the variable 'parents' educational level'. DISCUSSION. The fact that this variable does not have the same incidence can be explained, precisely, because it is does not function as a model, as it is not directly related to the practice of the competence analyzed. Introduction: Fthe diagnosis of reading habits in the young population represents a vital tool for the design of solutions, aimed at improving said practices. Objective: to reveal the behavior of reading habits in young people in the city of Santa Clara, comparing it with similar studies in other countries to establish the parameters that must condition the establishment of policies and actions that contribute to making reading an option leisure and for personal and social development. Materials and methods: The research has a descriptive cut; it is based on the application, through the PAPI procedure (face-to-face + paper), of a questionnaire to a sample of 1138 young people, between 15 and 35 years of age, during the 2019. Results and discussion: among the main results are the recognition of the influence of the globalization of culture, technological development and the media on the reading habits of these young people, by presenting similar procedures, to surveys carried out in other contexts, and evidence of the need to provide initiatives to encourage reading among young people, tempered by a prolific use of audiovisual media and social networks. Conclusions: the work shows the need to apply this type of studies in the universe of users that the library serves before designing policies and strategies to promote reading and validates how these serve as a basis for establishing procedures and generalizing them according to the potentialities of any organization of information. This article presents a case study with the main objective of gathering research regarding the operation of a school library ranked as successful within its particular socio-educational context. The research was carried out in a Barcelona public school with the following methods of the data collection: participant observation, semistructured interviews with three school teachers and a student and alumni survey on reading habits. The results demonstrate the high diversity in the educational practices developed, a shared vision regarding the library among teaching staff, and the influence of school intervention on student reading habits. It has always been in the public interest to know the reading habits of readers of various ages and levels of schooling, as well as their opinions with regard to the consumption of reading materials. Lately, researchers have given increased attention to digital texts. Although progress on these topics has been made as reported in published research, there is yet incomplete information regarding readers' habits and opinions at university and professional levels. This study descnbes the self-reported habits of university students belonging to two disciplinary domains (Human Sciences and Economic and Business Sciences) regarding reading on paper or on digital media for three purposes: academic, entertainment, and information seeking. The results reveal that the readers' preferences vary according to the three purposes. These readers reported using different media but had a clear preference for paper; they also reported distinguishing between cognitive processes (memory, comprehension, and learning), with the discipline to which they belonged having no radical effect on their preferences. All of this leads us to conclude that currently there exists a generation in transition, a 'Gutenberg-Google' generation, which still recognizes the relevance of paper, in particular for academic purposes. The abundant research work on reading habits in Spain shows a disaggregation of municipalities and cities with little geographical sample of their results. In this way, taking as a starting point the previous studies of 2007 for Extremadura carried out by the Germán Sánchez Ruipérez Foundation, our work intends to update and extend the data of reading habits by applying them to the contemporary geographical reality and the degree of rurality of the region. Thus, in the context of a survey focused on reading habits in Extremadura responded by 9.212 students of all educational levels (Primary, Secondary, University) during the year 2017, this study exposes and specifically analyzes the data obtained on the preferred genres according to the educational level and sex of participants. The study is completed with the data to the CDU of the public and school libraries of Extremadura. As a relevant result, the literary genres of mystery and adventure are, in general, the most demanded at all levels of education. In the Senior College, history is preferred. More women than men prefer romantic novels. The lyric genre is not very popular in terms of reading preferences among any of the educational levels analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research aims to identify the evolution and trends of the Spanish publishing sector. For this purpose, firstly, official statistical sources available on the publishing market and reading habits will be used, from which will be obtained: a) the necessary data for their statistical treatment, and b) an answer to whether the Spanish private publishing sector adapts adequately to market changes. This Project collects the public discourses about Reading included in 53 news published in four relevant Portuguese newspapers: Jornal de Noticias, Diario de Noticias, Publico and Correio da manha. The analysis is based on the study of the frequency rate and semantic value of a key words selection - present in the news corpus - for the object of the study. They allow observing the public discourses evolution along the period of time studied as a consequence of the new technologies development. The results indicate that technologies start to be a very important part of the Portuguese reading habits, but there are still not quite developed, as not all the functions are exploited. The conclusions would probably be that technologies develop so quickly that society needs some time to get used to them. Reading promotion is one of the traditional activities in libraries, with the aim of presenting reading as a leisure alternative. Taking into account the social commitment of libraries, these promotions should also be a vehicle to train critical and competent readers, something that has been largely forgotten as librarians focus on the playful nature of reading to attract users. The current article presents the research results about the publishing project led by Germán Arciniegas, when he was Minister of Education of Colombia: The collection of the "Biblioteca Popular de Cultura Colombiana". This project shows some editorial trends of the official edition in Colombia during the first half of the twentieth century as well as the way in which the editor configured his readers and supported the idea of expanding the market for Colombian book. In this way, this project contributed to the modernization of the Colombian publishing industry, at a time of transition towards the professionalization-specialization of the function of editors and writers in Colombia, and of an increase of the reading public.
