Abstract

Introduction: Fthe diagnosis of reading habits in the young population represents a vital tool for the design of solutions, aimed at improving said practices. Objective: to reveal the behavior of reading habits in young people in the city of Santa Clara, comparing it with similar studies in other countries to establish the parameters that must condition the establishment of policies and actions that contribute to making reading an option leisure and for personal and social development. Materials and methods: The research has a descriptive cut; it is based on the application, through the PAPI procedure (face-to-face + paper), of a questionnaire to a sample of 1138 young people, between 15 and 35 years of age, during the 2019. Results and discussion: among the main results are the recognition of the influence of the globalization of culture, technological development and the media on the reading habits of these young people, by presenting similar procedures, to surveys carried out in other contexts, and evidence of the need to provide initiatives to encourage reading among young people, tempered by a prolific use of audiovisual media and social networks. Conclusions: the work shows the need to apply this type of studies in the universe of users that the library serves before designing policies and strategies to promote reading and validates how these serve as a basis for establishing procedures and generalizing them according to the potentialities of any organization of information.
