From the first months of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led most governments to implement social distancing measures that harmed the mental health of sensitive persons. Several studies have shown changes in the prevalence of mental health conditions in a wide range of ages. However, the impact described in the scientific literature show that age and sociocultural factors might affect outcomes. Objective: Comparing anxiety and depression levels, as well as substance abuse prevalence in Mexican college students before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Application of the Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, and Substance Abuse Screening Test. Method: The study compared data from three college student samples: three obtained before the pandemic (n = 1,709) and one during the pandemic (n = 180). Results: Anxiety and depression levels during the pandemic were higher than before the pandemic. Discussion: There were no differences in the abuse of substances risk prevalence. These findings characterize changes in Mexican college students, showing that, despite differences among countries regarding pandemic policies, changes in mental health consistently revealed similar patterns.
