This article proposes an exam of the novel Los ojos vacíos, published in 2000 by the Spanish novelist Fernando Aramburu. The novel inaugurates the trilogy set in the imagined town of Antíbula and, in spite of presenting date and events which apparently belong to the historical reality, it is actually an alienating reproposition of a "possible world", set in an imaginary time and a space. With a dystopian approach developed in this kind of fiction, the author shows a deep idea of the human being, committed in deciphering, interpreting and understanding History, his destiny, the present time and his future. This paper aims to present the letters sent by Tommaso Daineri to Ercole I d'Este from Hungary in the period between 1501 and 1503. Daineri was in Hungary as the secretary of Pietro Isvalies, the papal legate who had been sent to Hungary in order to negotiate with king Wladislas II regarding the organization of a crusade against the Ottomans. An anti-Turkish league between the Holy See, Venice and Hungary was actually signed in May 1501 and lasted until the spring of 1503. The letters give updates on the development of the expedition, inform about the most important events of those years and provide descriptions about the geography or about the Hungarian traditions. The essay highlights some meaningful aspects of the letters at the content and linguistic level, after referring briefly to the biography of Daineri and his stay in Hungary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Starting from an analysis of Lorenzo Calogero's life and literary works, the article focuses on the relationship between cultural anthropology and poetry. According to some postmodern, anthropological theories the poetic writing could help to clarify some aspects of ethnography that the traditional anthropological writing sometimes fails to focus on. The attempt of this article is to consider Calogero's poetry as an ethnographic field that describes and transforms both the real world and the inner world of the poet. The dimension of "uninterrupted" writing and the cyclicality of Calogero's poetry, allows us to explore a ritual dimension of his poetry as a device capable of giving order and protecting his life/existence. During the last months, the impact of coronavirus on society has been emerging as a key factor in understanding how social reality works. This paper considers the pandemic as a total social fact (Mauss,1923), involving a lot of social aspects and domains. Starting from Camus and Foucault's description of the plagued city and through close observation of life during the lockdown, this paper aims to describe the effects of the epidemic in the social field, and also in the cultural and symbolic sphere. The analysis of the social crisis originated from the spread of the virus, focusing on the construction of new strategies to face the isolation and to generate a new sense of community, can illustrate the potential effects of these transformations on our present and future lives. New global trade routes, connecting for the first time very distant territories, were born and grew in the Early Modern Age. The lands of the Far East, which were of a special economical and religious interest, were integrated in those European trade routes. They were also a centre of special interest for the Jesuits, who were engaged in their evangelizing work all over the world. The Company's members themselves, in their role of conjunction between the Eastern world and the European one, and in their continuous relationship with the local authorities of the East, planned the departure of two delegations from Japan and China to Europe. The two missions, which started sixty years away from each other - one at the end of the 16th Century, the second at the half of the 17th Century - were characterized by profound differences but both had in the city of Venice their pivotal point. Last European city to be visited by the first delegation and the first one for the second, the city of the Serenissima can be seen, by the abundant handwritten documentation that is preserved in the State Archives and in the Marciana National Library, like the most important crossroads to understand the meaning of those two missions, from time to time at the centre of the interests of the Company, which supported them, and of the Italian Courts which welcomed them. Analyzing the letters sent by the pianist Cesare Pollini (Padova, Italy 1858-1912) to Richard Strauss and published here for the first time, the essay intends to reveal the artistic relation of two interesting personalities during late Eighteenth and the first years of Nineteenth century. Cesare Pollini, curiously forgotten by musical historiography, was an excellent pianist, an appreciated teacher, a composer, a musicologist and an organizer of high quality concerts. His connections with important personalities of late Eighteenth century European music and the particular attention to Italian instrumental music during a period dominated by the melodramatic, gave Pollini a status as an enterprising and dynamic intellectual, interested to European music but tied to Italy because of personal reasons and necessities. The letters, property of the Richard Strauss Institute in Garmisch, describe the evolution of a friendship full of sincere esteem and cultivated by mutual visits; these letters provide a new and interesting contribution to Pollini's scant biography - despite his importance - and to Strauss's initial activity as a composer at the beginning of a fortunate career.
