Abstract Socioemotional skills are essential for students’ development at school. However, school support has barely generated debates. We aimed to analyze the evidence of the internal structure and convergent-discriminant validity of the scores of the forced-choice version of the Inventory of Supporting for Socio-Emotional Skills (ISSE). In total, 443 middle and high school students (54% of whom were girls) participated in this study. Results indicated that the revised instrument was consistent with its two-dimension theoretical model (support and demand); the forced-choice version showed an appropriate internal structure and no bias by acquiescence. Moreover, based on a multitrait-multimethod matrix, the scores of the Likert forced-choice version showed convergent and discriminant validity. This study contributes to the literature by proposing a multidimensional heteroevalutive instrument to assess support for socioemotional development in the forced-choice format, which reduces response bias.

El Inventario de Personalidad IPIP- NEO es un instrumento con reactivos de dominio público. La variable de interés es la personalidad tal como es definida por la Teoría de los Cinco Grandes Factores. El objetivo del estudio es analizar las propiedades psicométricas del instrumento en su versión en español con 120 ítems distribuidos en cinco escalas con seis subescalas cada una. El estudio es de tipo instrumental que incluyó a estudiantes universitarios paraguayos. La recolección de datos se llevó a cabo entre abril y diciembre del 2018, en las facultades de Ciencias Médicas, Filosofía, Ciencias Sociales, Enfermería y Obstetricia de la Universidad Nacional de Asunción y las carreras de medicina y odontología de la Universidad del Pacifico. Se incluyeron en el estudio 345 estudiantes entre 17 y 36 años de edad (media de 21,2±2,8 años), mayoría mujeres (71,3%) y de la carrera de medicina (46,4%). El coeficiente de alfa de Cronbach fue para las escalas neuroticismo, extraversión, apertura a la experiencia, amabilidad y responsabilidad de 0,831; 0,785; 0,672; 0,795; 0,826, respectivamente. Tanto la consistencia interna como la estructura factorial fueron aceptables.

The diet of a potentially omnivorous coastal shark species, the bonnethead (Sphyrna tiburo), was examined in the western Atlantic along the coast of the southeastern United States. A total of 423 stomachs collected from Texas, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina were analyzed using standardized stomach content analysis methods. The diet was dominated by crabs, primarily portunids (Callinectes spp.), across the geographical range analyzed, though the relative importance of crabs varied between regions. Ontogenetic shifts in diet were not observed throughout the region studied. Female and male bonnetheads in South Carolina displayed different diets, particularly in the amount of portunid crabs consumed, with a higher proportion ingested by females. Bonnetheads consumed limited amounts of seagrasses in all regions except in South Carolina, where they occupy habitats without seagrasses in marsh dominated bays and estuaries. This finding indicates that, at least seasonally, seagrasses are not an essential part of the diet of this shark species and may only occur in stomachs as accidental ingestion.

In this article, the editors introduce the Digital Modern Languages Special Collection that results from an open call that sought out new and emerging research at the intersection of Modern Languages and digital culture, media and technologies. They explain the intentionally wide-ranging and transdisciplinary scope of the Collection, which reflects an openness to the many ways Digital Modern Languages research is practised. The Collection also includes research on a wide range of geographical and linguistic contexts, reflecting wider calls to move beyond the limited range of languages traditionally associated with “Modern Languages”. Through this combined transdisciplinary and cross-languages focus, the Collection seeks to contribute to the broader strategic identity transformation of the wider field.

The objectives of this publication are to (1) provide various names of some ethnic/Asian vegetable crops with EDIS publications available to readers; (2) list related chapters in this handbook, which provide recommendations for crops close to these ethnic vegetables grown in Florida; and (3) list EDIS publications currently available for these crops.

This chapter covers production of cole crops and Asian crucifers, including broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese broccoli, Chinese cabbage, Chinese mustard (bok choy), kohlrabi, lobok/daikon, collards, kale, mustard, and turnip.

Este artículo presenta un análisis de discurso a cuatro medios de prensa digital en Chile respecto a la mitigación y la adaptación al cambio climático. La investigación, sin precedentes para el caso chileno, se orienta a conocer los encuadres noticiosos con que es comunicado el cambio climático, ya que los medios son la principal fuente de información del cambio climático para los tomadores de decisión y la ciudadanía. Los resultados muestran que los definidores primarios del tema son los actores gubernamentales de nivel nacional, y la invisibilización de las personas y organizaciones ciudadanas en el proceso. Vemos así un alto grado de consenso entre los actores visibilizados respecto al encuadre de oportunidad económica, y la ausencia de encuadres de ecología crítica. Las conclusiones apuntan a que este desbalance podría influir en un diseño de políticas públicas con un sesgo tecnocrático, perdiendo la posibilidad de construir una visión integral del desarrollo del país.

Este artículo contribuye a desplegar el campo de relaciones que se ha establecido entre las nociones de crisis y cambio ambiental global, a través de la revisión de las principales tradiciones de pensamiento ambiental con influencia en América Latina, a partir de la década de 1970. Con este objetivo, se examinan los rasgos distintivos de la representación de lo ambiental en la producción académica de las ciencias sociales regionales, las construcciones éticas sobre las que se sostiene esta producción y las relaciones que se establecen entre ecología, crisis y desarrollo. El texto presenta un panorama general tanto de la producción identificada con Latinoamérica, como de las adaptaciones e interpretaciones de otros idearios y pensamientos de origen no latinoamericano, pero de reconocida influencia regional. Metodológicamente, se realiza un trabajo de doble hermenéutica sobre la bibliografía relevante, principalmente a través de textos y autores que inspiran y fundan las perspectivas estudiadas. El primer apartado hace un recorrido analítico y descriptivo sobre las nociones de crisis y las respuestas éticas hacia la naturaleza que sirven de base a las propuestas teóricas. El segundo apartado presenta un panorama de la construcción de la problemática ambiental desde cinco grandes grupos de perspectivas teóricas: la economía ambiental y ecológica, el marxismo ecológico, la modernización ecológica, la ecología política, la ontología política y la perspectiva decolonial. Finalmente, se presentan las conclusiones y reflexiones sobre los alcances políticos y prácticos de la producción teórica ambiental en Latinoamérica. Afirmamos que el pensamiento social latinoamericano sobre el cambio ambiental global ―dadas las realidades sociomateriales sobre las que funda su evidencia― se encuentra en una posición privilegiada para aportar a la construcción de otras prácticas no centradas en la apropiación instrumental y a la visibilización de otras ontologías relacionales entre humanos y naturaleza no humana.

While rarely explicitly recognized in our disciplinary frameworks, the openness and curiosity on which Modern Languages in the UK is founded are, in many ways, ethnographic impulses. Ethnographic theories and practices can be transformative in relation to the undergraduate curriculum, providing an unparalleled model for experiential and holistic approaches to language and cultural learning. As a form of emplaced and embodied knowledge production, ethnography promotes greater reflexivity on our geographical and historical locations as researchers, and on the languages and cultures through which we engage. An ethnographic sensitivity encourages an openness to less hierarchical and hegemonic forms of knowledge, particularly when consciously seeking to invert the traditional colonial ethnographic project and envision instead more participatory and collaborative models of engagement. Modern Languages scholars are at the same time ideally placed to challenge a monolingual mindset and an insensitivity to language-related questions in existing ethnographic research located in cognate disciplines. For Modern Languages to embrace ethnography with credibility, we propose a series of recommendations to mobilize these new research and professional agendas.1

This short discussion provides some introductory remarks on writing for the documentary form in animation. Taking into account theories of the place of animation in utilitarian films, avant-garde works and the essay film, the analysis, based on auto-ethnographic insights, provides some methods and approaches to developing animated documentary work. These include ‘Making Animation Choices’, ‘Staging in Space’, ‘Using Attachment and Detachment’, developing ‘Episodic lists and Micro-Narratives’, and deploying ‘Transition and Associative Relations’. The analysis seeks to show that these approaches to the animated documentary reveal and evidence a theory of practice, and a practice of theory.

This article examines transformations in the Chilean Patagonia, a region that has become a world leader in Salmon production for global markets. Employing ethnographic methods, this study examines the possibilities of considering inter-subjectivities in the processes of conforming important regions in the global production of foods in contrast to some perspectives that emphasize inter-objectivity in analyzing human and non-human relations. In a complex and globalized world, assembly theory permits us to understand how forms of bio-power stimulate regional transformations that then generate new relationships between life, agency and nature. The analysis focuses on experiments, encounters and affects, decentering conventional perspectives about the domestication of species, regional development and food production. It opens a debate about the potentialities and limits of non-lineal interpretations of reality.
