Background: The growing trend of STIs in recent years was altered after the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic., Objectives: Describe the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on STI declarations received during the pre-pandemic to pandemic period and estimate the number of STI cases expected for the pandemic period., Material and Methods: Descriptive analysis of STI declarations received during the pre-pandemic (2018-2019) and pandemic (2020-2021) periods. The influence of the number of positive cases of SARS-CoV-2 with the number of positive cases of STIs during the months of the pandemic was studied using a correlation model. Using the Holt-Wilson time series model, an estimate was made of the number of STI cases expected for the pandemic period., Results: The global incidence rate for all STIs in 2020 decreased by 18.3% compared to 2019. Chlamydia and syphilis presented a greater reduction in their incidence from 2019 to 2020 of 22.7% and 20.9%, respectively and 9.5% and 2.5% for gonorrhea and LGV. Estimates showed that in 2020 there would have been 44.6% more STIs than those declared. The proportions according to sex, country of birth and sexual orientation changed significantly in chlamydia and gonorrhea., Conclusions: The measures adopted for the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infections were able to achieve an initial decrease in STI cases in 2020, however, this change was not maintained during 2021, which ended with higher incidences recorded to date., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier España, S.L.U. Introduction and Objective: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic brought about social changes in 2020 and 2021. The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiologic profiles of the main sexually transmitted infections (STIs) of bacterial origin (chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis) diagnosed during this period and compare them to findings from previous years., Material and Methods: Drawing on data from Hospital General Universitario in Valencia, Spain, we recorded the number of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis cases diagnosed monthly by multiplex PCR in 2018-2021 and the number of PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 cases diagnosed monthly in 2020-2021. We also collected clinical and demographic information on all patients diagnosed with STIs during the years studied., Results: The total number of STIs diagnosed increased from 570 in 2018-2019 to 664 in 2020-2021. PCR positivity rates were similar in the 2 periods, but the incidence rates were higher during the pandemic. The chronologic correlation between SARS-CoV-2 and STI positivity was negative. Mean age at diagnosis was 29.64 years (95% CI, 19.33-41.14) for chlamydia, 30.86 years (95% CI, 20.24-42.45) for gonorrhea, and 37.04 years (95% CI, 26.01-51.00) for syphilis. The number of men diagnosed with chlamydia increased by 13.85% (95% CI, 6.39-21.08; P=.0003) during the pandemic., Conclusions: We observed a negative correlation between SARS-CoV-2 infections and STIs during the pandemic and an increase in chlamydia cases among men. STI cases rose during 2020-2021, indicating that they remain a significant problem that needs to be addressed in young and adult populations., (Copyright © 2022 AEDV. Introduction: Genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection is one of the most frequent in the world; about 85 million new cases of this pathology are registered each year, which causes severe complications in women and newborns. Objective: To determine the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of C. trachomatis infection in sexually active Venezuelan women. Materials and methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional, and field study based on the clinical history and physical examination, detection of infection with immunoenzymatic assay with anti-LPS polyclonal antibody and confirmation of results with molecular biology test. The sample consisted of 100 sexually active women over 12 years of age from Carabobo state, Venezuela. Results: The women were mostly between 20 and 45 years old, in 25% of them IgG antibodies to C. trachomatis were detected and in 84% of these the infection was confirmed by PCR, in none of the women IgM antibodies to C. trachomatis were found. Conclusion: Chronic infection characterizes women between 20 and 45 years of age; the immunoenzymatic test yielded false positives corroborated by PCR.

Background: Chlamydia trachomatis is the main cause of sexually transmitted bacterial infections worldwide. An estimated of 131 million cases occur each year. It is asymptomatic, but ascending infection in women can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility., Objective: To determine the prevalence of C. trachomatis in open population women who attend the Hospital General de Zona No. 29., Material and Methods: Identification of C. trachomatis was carried out by PCR testing of 200 vaginal exudate samples and its genotype was determined. In parallel, a routine microbiological diagnosis was carried out., Results: The prevalence of C. trachomatis was 8.5% (17/200) with a significant concomitance of p = 0.006 with Gardnerella vaginalis (relative risk of 2.871, 95%CI: 1.574-5.236). Likewise, C. trachomatis was identified in 5 samples as the only etiological agent. Sixteen strains of C. trachomatis belong to genotype F. An identified strain of C. trachomatis presented genetic motifs similar to the Mexican variant reported in 2019., Conclusions: The prevalence of C. trachomatis in the studied population indicates the need to implement diagnostic techniques for this bacterium. The use of PCR allows a rapid genotypic determination that would explain the epidemiological behavior of C. trachomatis and would represent a significant improvement in the quality of life of the patient., (© 2021 Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social.)

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most frequent bacterial sexually transmitted disease around the world. Estimated prevalence by WHO is 4,2% for women. Most cases are asymptomatic, but complications in fertility and during pregnancy are possible. The aim of this review is to describe the prevalence of C. trachomatis in Chilean studies using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detection, to describe the possible perinatal complications, to know recommendations about pregnancy screening in other countries, and to discuss the possibility of implementing in Chile.

Background: Chlamydia trachomatis is recognized as the causative agent of one of the most common and curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In women, it can be a trigger for pelvic inflammatory disease, a risk factor for infertility or acquisition of other STIs., Aim: To determine CT in women with vaginitis and associate it with sociodemographic, sexual, clinical, and vaginal microbiota factors., Methods: 121 female volunteers > 18 years of age, with a clinical diagnosis of vaginitis and abnormal vaginal discharge, attending in primary health care services (PHC) in Temuco-Chile were recluted. A vaginal discharge sample was taken, determining C. trachomatis by polymerase chain reaction and vaginal microbiota by Gram stain. Clinical, sociodemographic and sexual data were collected by survey., Results: Age range was 18-61 years. The frequency of C. trachomatis was 14.9%. C. trachomatis was associated with a higher number of sexual partners in the last 5 years (p = 0.001), oral plus anal sex (p = 0.055) and sex toys (p = 0.027); there was a non-significant association with bacterial vaginosis 31.2% (p = 0.091) and initiation of sexual activity < 18 years 20.6% (p = 0.07)., Conclusions: It would be beneficial to incorporate in the gynecological semiology of the women attended in PHC services, the factors found to favor C. trachomatis infection, as this could help the management of this STI.

With the objective of evaluating the concordance between the self-sampling of vaginal samples and the standard collection of endocervical samples for the identification of Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis and Candida spp. carried out by health personnel in women from an urban-rural area of Peru, a prospective and cross-sectional study was carried out in 206 women of childbearing age, we identified some sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia trachomatis or Trichomonas vaginalis in 9/206 (4.4%). We obtained a high degree of agreement in the identification of Candida spp. (k = 0.97), Chlamydia trachomatis (k=0.92) and Trichomonas vaginalis by microscopy (k=1.00), and a considerable agreement for the identification of Trichomonas vaginalis by culture (k=0.66). The self-sampling technique can be used to identify some sexually transmitted infections in urban-rural populations.

Introduction: The sexually transmitted infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common of bacterial etiology in the world. Although it can be asymptomatic in most cases, it can produce several reproductive health problems in women such as cervicitis, endometritis, and salpingitis. Despite its importance, the epidemiological data on this infection is insufficient in Medellín. Objective: To determine the prevalence of C. trachomatis in women from Medellín, identify possible risk factors, and evaluate its relationship with the human papillomavirus infection (HPV). Materials and methods: We conducted a multicenter cross-sectional study to detect C. trachomatis infection in 1,282 women using PCR and the LightMix 480 HT CT/NG™ commercial kit (Roche, Basel, Switzerland). Results: The total prevalence of C. trachomatis infection was 4.1% (95% CI: 2.9-5.3). We found an association between the presence of the infection and age, cigarette consumption, and the use of hormonalcontraceptives. Conclusion: The prevalence of the infection is similar to that reported in other parts of the world with young women being the most affected population. No relation was found with the presence of HPV.

Objective: The partner notification is one of the main activities of epidemiological surveillance in Public Health. The primary objective was to estimate the compliance of the partner notification by health professionals who reported sexually transmitted diseases (HIV, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis and Chlamydia) during 2017 in Lleida's regions., Methods: We carried out a descriptive epidemiological study of prevalence about the compliance of partner notification. Data collection was done by epidemiological surveys of these notifiable diseases and additional information was recovered through medical record and interview with professionals. The factors associated with the lack of partner notification were studied through the odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI). ORs were adjusted (ORa) with multivariate logistic regression models., Results: We studied 203 STD cases with an average age of 30.6 years (SD=11.1); 32.5% were women. There was 46.3% without partner notification. The main cause of this absence was the lack of patient cooperation (23.4%). The variables associated with the lack of partner notification were the male sex (aOR-3.5; CI95%=1.6-7.5), gonococcal infection (aOR-4.9; CI95%=1.2-19.8), chlamydia infection (aOR-3.9; CI95%=0.9-16.1) and homosexual/bisexual sexual orientation (aOR-2.2; CI95%=0.9-5.4)., Conclusions: Compliance of partner notification is low and it is related to male sex, sexual orientation (homosexual/bisexual/transsexual) and type of infection (Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia). Reducing the social stigma associated with sexual orientation and improving the information of health professionals could favour the contact studies.

Sexually transmitted infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, including lymphogranuloma venereum and Mycoplasma genitalium have increased in last decade. This epidemiological scenario presents new challenges in order to improve and strengthen our control and prevention strategies. The routine clinical diagnosis of urethritis and cervicitis must be combined with the active search for the causal agent in men with symptoms of dysuria or proctitis, and in women with pelvic inflammatory disease. We should also include sexually transmitted infections screening in asymptomatic patients with sexual risk behaviours or sexual contact with patients diagnosed with an sexually transmitted infection. The microbiological diagnosis must be based on molecular techniques capable of detecting Chlamydia trachomatis (discriminating between L genotypes associated with lymphogranuloma venereum and other genotypes) and Mycoplasma genitalium (ideally including the identification of macrolide-resistant strains). A faster and specific diagnosis will allow for a targeted treatment with a suitable antibiotic regimen. We also recommend including contact tracing of sexual partners and, occasionally, a cure test. Introduction: Chlamydia trachomatis is one of the main etiological agents of sexually transmitted infections worldwide. In 2006, a Swedish variant of C. trachomatis (Swedish-nvCT), which has a deletion of 377bp in the plasmid, was reported. In Latin America, Swedish-nvCT infections have not been reported. We investigated the presence of Swedish-nvCT in women with infertility in Mexico., Methods: Swedish-nvCT was searched in 69C. trachomatis positive samples from 2339 endocervical specimens. We designed PCR primers to identify the deletion in the plasmid in the ORF1, and the presence of a repeated 44bp in the ORF3. The sample with the deletion was genotyped with the genes of the major outer membrane protein A (ompA) and the polymorphic membrane protein (pmpH)., Results: The deletion was detected in one of the 69 samples positive C. trachomatis of 2339 endocervical exudates. The nucleotide sequence analysis of the ompA shows a high degree of similarity with the Swedish nvCT (98%), however the variant found belongs to serovar D. The nucleotide sequence of the pmpH gene associates to the variant found in the genitourinary pathotype of the Swedish-nvCT but in different clusters., Conclusions: Our results revealed the presence of a new variant of C. trachomatis in Mexican patients. This variant found in Mexico belongs to serovar D based on the in silico analysis of the ompA and pmpH genes and differs to the Swedish-nvCT (serovars E). Introduction: The presence of C. trachomatis in pregnant women can cause premature rupture of membranes, postpartum endometritis and preterm birth. Clinical diagnosis is more difficult among those who have an asymptomatic infection., Objective: know the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis in pregnant women in their first trimester and to detect if there are any factors associated with this bacterium., Material and Methods: Prospective, descriptive, cross sectional and correlational study performed at Clínica Universitaria Reina Fabiola, in Córdoba, between October 2016 and April 2017. C. trachomatis was detected through the Real Time PCR technique in first void urine samples., Results: 350 pregnant women were studied. The global prevalence was of 2% with a 13,3% in women under 25 years old (p< 0,001). A similar pattern was observed with respect to the educational level, with a higher prevalence on those who only had primary education, 18,2% (p<0.001); in women who presented a low gynecological sign or symptom 6,8% (p< 0,001) and in those patients whose sexual initiation was before 18 years old, 3,3% (p< 0,030)., Conclusion: It is advisable to implement C. trachomatis screening as part of the pre natal screening in all pregnant women under 25 years old. Argentinian health care system should take this problem into account in order to achieve a rational control over the infections caused by this bacterium.

Background: Endocervical infection by Chlamydia trachomatis is considered one of the leading causes of infertility worldwide. During pregnancy, it can lead to serious complications such as premature rupture of membranes and premature births., Aim: To determine the prevalence of genital infection by C. trachomatis in pregnancy and infertile women from Mexico City., Methods: The detection of C. trachomatis was performed by real-time PCR with the commercial kit COBAS® TaqMan CT Test v2.0 (Roche Molecular System)., Results: We analyzed 2,352 endocervical swabs; 102 were positive (4.3%). Age prevalence showed that pregnant adolescents (15 to 19 years of age) had the highest risk of infection (10.9%, RR = 3.23 [95% IC: 1.79-5.84]), followed by young women aged 20 to 24 years, with a prevalence of 5.6% (RR = 1.65 [95% IC: 0.82-3.34])., Discussion: The results indicate that the prevalence is within the range reported worldwide. However, pregnant adolescents were those with a higher prevalence than infertile women were., Conclusion: A systematic screening of C. trachomatis infection in women younger than 24 years of age, and in pregnant women is necessary to reduce the incidence of infertility and perinatal complications.

Objective: Chlamydia trachomatis is the most prevalent bacteria causing sexually transmitted infections. In women, this infection can cause cervicitis and urethritis, although it's usually asymptomatic. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of C. trachomatis in women attending the lab Instituto de Previsión Social and detect the genotypes., Methods: Endocervical samples from 505 symptomatic and asymptomatic women were assayed. It was determined the presence of C. trachomatis by PCR through amplification of a fragment of the cryptic plasmid. Positive samples were genotyped by the partial amplification of the ompA gene and analyzed phylogenetically., Results: Forty-three positive samples were detected to infection with C. trachomatis, obtaining a prevalence of 8.5% (IC 95%: 6.4-11.3%). The prevalence of C. trachomatis was higher in women with vaginal symptoms [11.3% (30/265) vs. 5.4% (13/240)] (p = 0.018), as well as in women under 26 year-old [11.5% (28/244) vs. 6.2% (15/246)] (p = 0.021). Based on phylogenetic analysis, it was observed that 62% of the samples were genotype E, 15% genotype J, 15% genotype D, and 8% genotype F., Conclusions: This work is the first contribution on the molecular epidemiology of C. trachomatis in the Misiones province, Argentina, which shows the rate of prevalence of this bacterium and offers information on circulating genotypes.

The sexually transmitted infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis has a high prevalence in Chile and other latitudes and is associated with serious risks to the reproductive health of those who become infected. Screening with self- collected samples and detection by amplification of nucleic acids is the most effective form of sanitary control. Until now, in Chile, the diagnosis and epidemiological management of C. trachomatis is not carried out in public health. The Ministry of Health of Chile is making important progress to start this implementation. The Medical Societies are committed to participate in this process to achieve effective control of this infection in our population.

Introduction: Chlamydia trachomatis infection is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted disease. Re-infections are a major problem in its control as they increase the probability of developing sequellae., Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of C.trachomatis and re-infection rate after 6 months of treatment by determining the possible causes., Methods: Cross-sectional study in which a urine sample was analysed by PCR in a convenience sample of 506 sexually active youths aged 16-25years. An epidemiological survey and re-test was performed at 3months., Results: The prevalence of C.trachomatis was 8.5%. The age (OR=2.34; 95%CI: 1.21-4.55) and concurrency (OR=3.64; 95% CI: 3.58-26.39) were determining factors for acquiring C.trachomatis. The re-infection rate was 10.34%., Discussion: The high prevalence of C.trachomatis, as well as the rate of reinfection, suggest the need to assess the effectiveness of the opportunistic screening program and ensure high levels of reporting of sexual partners. Background: Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) is the most frequently reported sexually transmitted infection (STI) in developed countries, but there is a lack data on its incidence and population dynamics in Spain. The objectives of this study were to estimate the incidence of C. trachomatis in patients seeking medical attention in an STI clinic with a defined population catchment area, to identify factors associated with this infection, and to explore differences between factors associated with new infections and re-infections., Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on a cohort of patients from a STI clinic who underwent chlamydia testing at least twice between 2007 and 2015., Results: Of the 2633 patients who met study selection criteria, 795 (30.2%) tested positive for C. trachomatis at baseline (baseline Chlamydia). The overall incidence was 7.97/100 person-years (95% CI: 7.2-8.8): 5.9/100 person-years (95% CI: 5.2-6.7) among patients testing negative for C. trachomatis at baseline, and 18.3 person-years (95% CI: 15.6-21.5) among those testing positive at baseline. In multivariate analysis, the factors independently associated with overall incidence were a history of infection with C. trachomatis in the previous 6 months (hazard ratio=3.6; 95% CI: 2.3-5.4), younger age (HR <20 vs ≥35 years=5.5; 95% CI: 3.2-9.5), male sex, 2 or more sexual partners in the previous month and year, and inconsistent condom use., Conclusions: Guidelines should be established for C. trachomatis in Spain, including recommendations on the need for follow-up and re-testing, independently of age. Introduction: Chlamydia trachomatis infection constitutes the most common sexual transmitted disease (STD) among young women. International studies demonstrate that prevalence changes over time and also according to places., Aims: To estimate the prevalence of this infection among asymptomatic Chilean women (15 to 24 years old) and correlating with risk factor occurrence., Methods: Transversal cohort study to identify C. trachomatis infection through a diagnostic kit designed to detect and amplify cryptic plasmid DNA by quantitative PCR from endocervical sample., Results: 181 women were screened during the period of study. The overall prevalence estimate was 5.5% and founding significant estimate variations (0% to 14.6%) between recruiting centers. There was difference in number of sexual partners (4.1 vs 2.5; p<0.05) between positive and negative women. No difference was observed in age of first coitus, STD history, the use of barrier method or socioeconomic level. However, the probability of being carrier increases as greater is the number of sexual partners, especially when the use of barrier method is low. The latest is not related to the socioeconomic level., Conclusions: One of 12 to 18 women at this age range will have asymptomatic infection. The current prevalence and its variability substantiates the C. trachomatis screening and periodic surveillance.

Introduction: Chlamydia trachomatis (chlamydia) infection is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STD). However, the prevalence among young people is unknown in our country. In 2007, the monitoring of the prevalence and behaviours related to acquiring it began in Catalonia in young people ≤25years., Objectives: To determine and monitor the prevalence and determining factors of chlamydia among a young sexually active population ≤25years, treated in sexual and reproductive health care centras (CT/NG-ASSIR) and in prisons (CT/NG-Prisons)., Materials and Methods: An analysis was performed on 6 cross-sectional data studies in two sentinel populations of young people from the period 2007-2014. Behavioural indicators were recorded and urine specimens were collected for analysis by PCR. The prevalence and trends are described, and the variables associated with infection were evaluated using multivariate logistic regression analysis., Results: The mean prevalence for CT/NG-ASSIR was 7.4%, with an upward trend (P=.174), and an increase of 46.5%. CT/NG-Prisons had a mean 8.0%, with an upward trend (P=.282), and an increase of 31.6%. Age and foreign origin are presented as risk factors in both populations. The concurrent sexual partners added to CT/NG-ASSIR and the time spent in prison to CT/NG-Prisons., Discussion: The results underscore the need for a more efficient approach to control activities related to chlamydia infection in Catalonia. Introduction: Chlamydia trachomatis presents clinical consequences and it is barely studied in Colombia., Objective: To compare the C. trachomatis infection in Bogotá and Medellín with specific frequencies by gender and age group, between 2012-2015., Methods: Descriptive study of multiple groups, with 1,660 people in Bogotá and 1,087 in Medellin. Anti-Chlamydia trachomatis test with recombinant antigens MOMP, TARP and CPAF was applied; 100% sensitivity and 99.6% specificity. It was estimated and compared the frequency of infection by gender and age group, by hypothesis testing, confidence intervals and prevalence ratios., Results: The largest proportion were women and people between 30-39 years. The frequency of positive IgG in Bogotá was 15.6% (95% CI = 13.4 to 17.8) in Medellin 16.9% (95% CI = 13.4 to 20.4), while the frequency of positive IgM was 0% in Medellin and 0.2% (95% CI = 0.01-1.0) in Bogotá; it was higher in women. In Bogotá, the frequency was higher in younger than 30 years and lower in older than 50., Discussion: The high frequency of infection, its greater occurrence in women, the differences found in the age groups, the low number of investigations in Colombia and clinical risks associated with C. trachomatis, show the need to improve surveillance, screening and research in this infection.

Background: Human papilloma virus (HPV) and Chlamydia trachomatis are the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections (STIs), among teenagers and young people, with risk factors: active sex life and multiple partners. Chlamydia trachomatis infection may favor HPV infection and this, the development of cervical cancer. Both infections can lead to consequences on sexual and reproductive health., Objective: To determine frequency of HPV and C. trachomatis in asymptomatic university women less than 25 years, associating them with number of sexual partners (n°SxP) and time of sexual activity (TSxA). Material andMethods: 151 cervical samples for HPV and C. trachomatis, were processed by conventional and in real time reaction polymerase chain., Results: HPV 21, 8%, C. trachomatis 11, 2% and co-infection (HPV/C.trachomatis), 4.6%. Aimong HPV +, 80, 6% showed high risk HPV. The n°SxP was strongly associated with HPV. Aimong young coinfected HPV/C. trachomatis, 71.4% had 3 or more PSx. Chlamydia trachomatis was more frequent (64,7%) that HPV within range of 3-5 years according to the TSxA, Discussion: A high prevalence of HPV and C. trachomatis was observed. Young women with coinfection HPV/C. trachomatis could be a high-risk group need to monitor their infections. It suggests the implementation of university programs in education, counseling and prevention in sexual health.

Introduction: The number of consultations for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is increasing in Spain. The aim of this study was to describe and analyze the epidemiological, behavioral, clinical, and microbiological characteristics of patients registered at the STI unit of a tertiary hospital., Methods: This was a retrospective, single-center descriptive study carried out between 2010 and 2013 in a multidisciplinary unit specialized in STIs, situated in a tertiary hospital. Epidemiological, clinical, and behavioral data were gathered using a face-to-face interview and a standardized questionnaire. Samples were collected for microbiology analysis., Results: The study included 546 patients: 96% were men, 41% had human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, and 56% were men who have sex with men. The reasons for consultation were the following: urethritis; genital, anal, or perianal ulcers; proctitis; oral ulcers; sexual contact with a person with a known STI; and high-risk sexual contact. The most common microbiological diagnoses were Neisseria gonorrhoeae in urethritis, Treponema pallidum in genital and anal or perianal ulcers, and Chlamydia trachomatis lymphogranuloma venereum serovars in proctitis. The highest prevalences of the main STIs studied occurred in homosexual men with HIV infection., Conclusion: This study confirms the increase in the incidence of STIs in recent years and the epidemiological characteristics of the HIV/STI epidemic in Spain., (Copyright © 2015 AEDV. Objective: To determine the prevalence of Chlamydia, Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma in patients with peritoneal tubal factor infertility and altered., Material and Methods: A descriptive, observational, retrospec- tive, transversal, infertility patients Juarez Hospital of Mexico 2013 to 2015. Study included patients with infertility diagnosis and detection of antibodies (IgG) by ELISA for Chlamydia and vaginal cultures for Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma, hysterosalpingography and histerolapa- roscopia with chromotubation, Results: 46 patients with a mean age of 32.5 years. It was found that 36% were positive for these infections (n = 17): Chlamydia in 8.7% (n = 4), Ureaplasma in 21.7% (n = 10) and Mycoplasma in 6.5% (n = 3). Chlamydia patients and bilateral tubal occlusion (OTB) in 5.8% (n = 1), Ureaplasma and OTB (n = 5) were identified in 29.4% of them with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and tubal obstruction Ureaplasma right (OTD) in 5.8% (n = 1), Ureaplasma and tubal patency but with loose adhesions in 5.8% (n = 1) and Mycoplasma with OTB in 11.1% (n = 2), p = 0.425. Hysterosalpingography showed a sensitivity of 59% and specificity of 79%., Conclusions: Although there was no association of variables, Ureaplasma infection was more common in patients with infertility and tubal damage.

Introduction: Infections by Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are the two most common bacterial sexually transmitted infections in the world. These infections affect principally less than 25-year-old individuals with sexual, reproductive and maternal and child health consequences., Objective: This study sought to estimate the prevalence of C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae among high school students in the 11 municipalities of the Sabana Central area of Cundinamarca, Colombia., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 14 to 19-year old adolescents attending schools in the study area. After signing their consent, participants completed a questionnaire and provided a urine sample for the detection of C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae by real-time polymerase chain reaction., Results: In the sample of 972 sexually active adolescents, the prevalence of C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae was 2.24% and 0.10%, respectively. No co-infections were detected. Overall, 21.4% of women who tested positive for C. trachomatis were asymptomatic. Significant relationships were found between C. trachomatis infection and female gender, the consumption of alcohol or other substances during the previous sexual relationship, having one or more partners and the presence of sexually transmitted infections., Conclusions: The prevalence of C. trachomatis detected in this study was lower than the prevalence reported for similar groups; besides, contrary to the general trends, fewer asymptomatic cases were identified in this study. To prioritize preventive strategies in high-risk populations, an epidemiological surveillance system for C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae should be implemented in Colombia, with screening performed using non-invasive molecular techniques.

Chlamydia trachomatis genital infection is nowadays considered one of the most frequent causes of sexually transmitted infections (STI) in the world, mainly affecting the group of young people under 25 years old. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of C. trachomatis infection in newly admitted students to Universidad Nacional del Sur, Bahía Blanca, Argentina, and to evaluate the risk factors to acquire STI. For that purpose, 204 young college students with a mean age of 19 were involved in this study. Each participant delivered a sample of first-void urine and completed a questionnaire which was then submitted anonymously. The research for C. trachomatis was done on 114 valid samples through a technique of DNA amplification, whose molecular target was the gene ompA. Four cases of infection by C. trachomatis were detected with a prevalence of 3.5%. The risks factors associated to the infection were a history of 7 or more partners since the start of sexual activity and contact with a new sexual partner in the last 4 months. The prevalence of such infection reflects a moderate circulation of this microorganism in the studied population. This fact, along with some aspects shown by the questionnaire results, would characterize a population having a low risk profile for acquiring STIs. However, some other information obtained from the questionnaires gave some opposite evidence, which would alert us on the need of keeping watch, raising awareness and implementing preventive actions in this population., (Copyright © 2014 Asociación Argentina de Microbiología. Background and Objective: Young prisoners have high-risk behaviors and socio-economic insecurity that increases vulnerability for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) acquisition. Monitoring its prevalence will help to reduce infection rates., Patients and Methods: Cross-sectional study from a convenience sample of prisoners aged 18-25 years. Urine samples were obtained to determine CT. A standardized and anonymous questionnaire was used to collect the study variables., Results: The overall CT prevalence was 11%, significantly higher in those with less than one year in prison, who also presented higher frequencies in risk behaviors, while these were reduced in those who had been imprisoned for more than a year., Conclusions: The prevalence values obtained give an idea of the concentration of the population vulnerable to this disease in prisons and underscore the need to continue programs for the prevention and control of sexual transmitted infections (STIs). Being imprisoned longer decreased risk behaviors; therefore, it is important to screen for STIs upon admission because they are more likely to be infected and it would be thus possible to influence at that time in sex education because, at that time, risk behaviors occur more commonly, which are most likely done when they were free., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier España, S.L.U. Introduction and Objectives: Chlamydia trachomatis genital infection is common in our setting and early treatment can prevent complications. The aim of this study was to report on patients diagnosed with C trachomatis genital infection in a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic., Material and Methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study of patients diagnosed with C. trachomatis infection between 2010 and 2011. We recorded demographic data and information on sexual habits, concomitant sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and various aspects of treatment., Results: In total, 12.3% of the samples analyzed were positive for C trachomatis genital infection. Sixty-two patients (43 men) with a mean age of 31 years were studied; 75% were heterosexual and 87% had had a sexual partner in the previous 2 months. Condom use was inconsistent in 81%, 79%, and 65% of patients who practiced vaginal, oral, and anal sex, respectively. Thirteen percent of the patients had symptoms and anogenital warts were the most common associated STI. The most widely used treatment was doxycycline., Conclusions: A high prevalence of genital C. trachomatis infection was detected in our STD clinic, and the majority of cases were found in young men. We observed a high rate of asymptomatic infection in patients who do not engage in high-risk sexual behavior and who had come to the clinic for another reason. Unlabelled: Background: Chlamydiales are obligate intracellular pathogens causing a wide range of diseases in humans and animals., Background: Chlamydiales are obligate intracellular pathogens causing a wide range of diseases in humans and animals., Objective: To evaluate the seroprevalence of IgG antibodies to Chlamydophila psittaci, Chlamydophila pneumoniae and Chlamydia trachomatis in a group of pregnant women few hours before resolution of gestation, thus allowing for assessment of the potential effects in their pregnancy outcomes., Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was done involving 110 hospitalized women for pregnancy resolution in two secondary care hospitals, one of Mexico City and other of Cuernavaca, Mor. Obstetric outcomes were followed in every case. Serum antibody measures were performed by microimmunofluorescence. Possible associations between seropositivity and pregnancy outcomes were analyzed., Results: 110 pregnant women were studied, 85 were seropositive for any of the species (77.3%), of which 39 (46%) had antibodies to the three species, 27 against two (32%) and 19 (22%) against one. No associations of serologic results with obstetric complications were observed in these pregnant women. High socioeconomic status was found as a risk factor for seropositivity against C trachomatis., Conclusions: This study reveals high exposure to three species of Chlamydiaceae in Mexican pregnant women. Demonstrating complex interactions in two different places where all species are present. No correlation was found between seropositivity towards these Chlamydia species and pregnancy complications.

Background: Chlamydia trachomatis infection is the most commonly reported sexually transmitted bacterial infection worldwide. Between 70 and 90% of women are asymptomatic, however, untreated and persistent infections can lead to the development of urethritis, pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and ectopic pregnancy., Aims: To determine C. trachomatis infection frequency in a group of women in Chile, using quantitative real time PCR (qPCR) and to compare the usefulness of endocervical and urine samples for C. trachomatis detection., Methods: 87 asymptomatic women aged 15-64 years were included. Every woman donated one endocervical sample and one urine sample. Detection and quantification of C. trachomatis was performed by qPCR., Results: Of 87 endocervical samples, the frequency was 11.49% (n = 10). Of these samples, 5 cases were found in women < 35 years old. About urine samples, 16 samples were positive (18.39%). Ten women < 35 years old yielded positive urine samples. Only four women had both samples positive for C. trachomatis (4.6%). There was no statistically significant relationship between age and C. trachomatis infection. Cryptic plasmid quantification was found between 3.55 - 96.050 copies/μL for endocervical samples and 7.22-633.1 copies/μL for urine samples., Conclusion: Estimated frequency of C. trachomatis in Chilean women was higher than previous Chilean studies. Both types of samples are complementary for screening and diagnosis strategies using sensitive techniques, because silent infection can be present in either urinary or genital tract or in both in women.

Introduction: Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are responsible for 3-10% of sexually transmitted diseases in adolescents. 75% are asymptomatic. International standards recommend annual screening for C. trachomatis in sexually active women under 26 years. Self-collected vaginal swab is one of the less invasive screening methods, it is well accepted by patients and rarely used in our country., Aim: To determine the frequency of C. trachomatis and n. gonorrhoeae by a self-sampling method of vaginal swab and its acceptability in a group of adolescents and young adults., Patients and Methods: Women 18 to 25 years old. Vaginal samples were processed by nucleic acid amplification tests, Gen Probe APTIMA Combo2. Data were collected on sexual behavior and perception of self-sampling by survey., Results: We studied 344 patients with an average age of 21.7 years. Detection of C. trachomatis was positive in 7.9% women and it was not found in any of the patients studied for N. gonorrhoeae. 98% considered self-sampling instructions easy to understand, 87.5% felt comfortable taking the sample., Conclusions: Prevalence of C. trachomatis in the study population was similar to that described in other national and international studies. N. gonorrhoeae was not found in this series, which is consistent with literature reports. The self-sampling technique of vaginal sample was well accepted by the patients. However, they were anxious about the quality of the sample. According to our results, it is important to emphasize the importance of annual detection of these pathogens and that self-sampling technique is a valid alternative.

Introduction: The epidemiologic rates of gonorrhea have declined steadily in Chile, while the incidence of infections with Trichomonas vaginalis and Chlamydia trachomatis is not well known., Aim: Since these sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and perinatal infections, this study aimed to update their prevalence in a public hospital in the Metropolitan Region of Chile., Patients and Methods: Between April and October 2010 and April and October 2011, pregnant women attending the antenatal Service, Hospital San Borja Arriarán, were randomly selected for detection of T. vaginalis, N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis by culture in modified Diamond's broth, Thayer-Martin agar, and by omp1 gene amplification by nested PCR, respectively. We excluded pregnant women who received antibiotics within the past 30 days., Results: Two hundred and fifty five cervicovaginal samples were analyzed. C. trachomatis was detected in 15 (5.9%) and T. vaginalis in 6 (2.4%). N. gonorrhoeae was not found., Conclusion: The results show low prevalence of C. trachomatis and T. vaginalis and absence of N. gonorrhoeae. These rates have remained stable at this medical center since the 1990s, with a slight increase in C. trachomatis.

Urogenital chlamydia infections are the most prevalent of all sexually transmitted diseases although the number of chlamydia-induced reactive arthritis cases are generally below the estimated incidence of the disease. This may be related with the high rate of asymptomatic chlamydial infections and the lack of adequate diagnostic criteria. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a new system for detection of Chlamydia, is one of the most useful techniques for the diagnosis of this disease. Biologic therapy produces theoretical doubts regarding its indication and there is little information related with chlamydia induced reactive arthritis treatment efficacy. Background: Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) is the most frequent bacterial sexual infection in women. Pregnant women screening is controversial, with asymptomatic colonization occurring in 2-20%, and 40-70% newborns can be infected., Objectives: The aim of this work is to characterise C. trachomatis infections in children under 12 months., Material and Methods: Retrospective study was carried out from January 1997 to December 2009 (13 years), on Chlamydia infections, diagnosed by immunofluorescence of ocular scraping or serum immunoglobulin M (IgM). Demographic, clinical features, imaging findings, and outcomes were analysed., Results: A total of 46 children were identified, with an overall incidence of 0.7/1,000 deliveries. Mean age was 2 months (range from 7 days to 11 months). Seven mothers had co-infections: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) (1), HBs antigen (HBsAg) (1) and group B Streptococcus (5). Most (81.4%) children had a vaginal delivery, with membrane rupture over 12 hours in 13.0%. Respiratory infection occurred in 41 (89.1%) cases and conjunctivitis in 17 (36.9%). Conjunctivitis manifested in the first 30 days of life (range from 7 days to 52 days). Respiratory symptoms occurred at age 45 days (range from 8 days to 11 months). Ten (29.4%) children had complications: hypoxemia (9), acute medial otitis (2), apnoea (3) and atelectasis (1). Chest X-ray revealed interstitial infiltrate in 25 (65.8%), and was normal in 4 children. Most children (80.5%) had a good outcome., Conclusions: C. trachomatis should be considered as an aetiologic agent of conjunctivitis and respiratory infections in the first year of life. Objectives: To undertake a critical literature review of published evidence on the effectiveness of contact tracing in sexually transmitted infections, mechanisms of referral, and the criteria for initiating this activity. To describe how these factors vary by causative agent and to characterize the current state of contact tracing in sexually transmitted infections in developed countries., Methods: A systematic literature review was undertaken using online databases and scientific publications, as well as guidelines and documents pertaining to the legal framework within which contact tracing takes place., Results: Contact tracing is specifically recommended for infections caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, syphilis and HIV. The principal approaches to contact tracing reported were patient referral, provider referral or conditional patient referral. In addition, patient-dispensed partner treatment and the use of new technologies were reported. Numerous studies have evaluated the efficacy, effectiveness and social and legal context of contact tracing in different countries and populations. This situation contrasts with that in Spain, where there is a notable absence of guidelines, legal framework and formal studies dealing with contact tracing in sexually transmitted infections., Conclusions: Contact tracing is an increasingly important tool in the public health management of sexually transmitted infections and should be valued as such. This activity should be an integral and effective component of the control and prevention of sexually transmitted infection programmes in all autonomous regions in Spain. Objective: To determine the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (N. gonhorroeae) infections and the risk factors for acquiring them in individuals under 35 years-old attending sexual health clinics in Barcelona province in 2006., Methods: Cross-sectional study of a convenience sample of 500 adolescents and young adults aged between 16 and 35 years. A total of 423 samples were analysed using real-time PCR. A standardised questionnaire was used to collect clinical, epidemiological, and behavioural data on the participants. Significant differences were analysed in the descriptive study using Pearson's ((2). The association between C. trachomatis infection and its determining factors was analysed using the Mantel-Haenszel test and a multivariate logistic regression model., Results: The overall prevalence of C. trachomatis was 4%, and was significantly higher in those under 25 years of age. The overall prevalence of N. gonhorroeae was 0.2%. The independent risk factors for infection by C. trachomatis were as follows: foreign origin (OR: 3.74; CI 95%: 1.10-12.72), having had a sexual partner in the last 3 months (OR 3.91; CI 95%: 1.30-11.81), and tobacco use the last 12 months (OR: 4.99; CI 95%: 1.34-18.59)., Conclusions: This is the first study performed in Catalonia that shows high prevalence of C. trachomatis in young people, thus confirming trends in the rest of Europe. Systematic monitoring of C. trachomatis infection in sentinel populations will provide valid information allowing us to assess the relevance of proposing targeted screening programs in our setting., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier España, S.L. Background: Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are common sexually transmitted diseases among young women and little has been doing to study them in Chilean adolescents., Aim: Determine the rates of C trachomatis and N gonorrhoeae in Chilean young women., Material and Methods: Urine samples were obtained from 203 sexually active females under 25 year-old, who attended hospitals from either high or low-income areas in Chile's capital, Santiago. C trachomatis and Ngonorrhoeae were detected by nucleic acid amplification testing., Results: Seven percent of samples were positive for C trachomatis. AU samples were negative for N gonorrhoeae. Among pregnant women, 19% of samples were positive for C trachomatis, while non-pregnant women were positive on 5.5% (p =0.04). Systematic use of barrier contraception was referring by 12% of women. AU of the latter was free of C trachomatis. No association was observing between age, number of sexual partners, age of first sexual intercourse, and presence of uro-gynecological symptoms, socioeconomic status and the rate of C trachomatis., Conclusions: Seven percent of this group of Chilean young women was infected with C trachomatis. The figure rises to 19% if pregnant. Surveillance and screening programs should been implemented to prevent sequels on this vulnerable population.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to know the prevalence and tendency of microorganisms producing urethritis, in men, in the City Centre of Madrid., Methods: Cross-sectional study. The urethral samples of 1.248 men were analyzed, for 3 years. The samples were studied for: GRAM stain, when secretion exists; culture in habitual plates; detection of C. trachomatis, U. urealyticum and M. hominis, when there was suspicious, study of T. vaginalis and when suspicious injuries exist, study of virus Herpes simplex., Results: The percentage of positive samples was 22.60%. The isolated microorganisms were: U. urealyticum 7.61%, N. gonorrhoeae 6.33%, C. trachomatis 4.81%, M. hominis 0.24%, H. parainfluenzae 1.76%, H. influenzae 1.12%, Candida spp 0.48%, S. pyogenes 0.16% and Herpes virus simplex (2) 0.08%. Two or more microorganisms were isolated in 1.68%. The percentage of positive samples in 2003 was 17.41% and N. gonorrhoeae the most frequent microorganism (6.22%). In 2004 was 25.57% and the most frequent U. urealyticum (10.18%). In 2005 the 24.50% of the samples were positive and U. urealyticum the most frequent (7.92%). The 79.41% of N. gonorrhoeae were susceptible to all antibiotics tested. It is not found resistance to ceftriaxone, claritromicine and amoxicilline/clavulanic acid. The 11.76% were betalactamase- producing. The 26.47% of Haemophilus spp. were betalactamase- producing and all strains were susceptible to cefotaxime., Conclusions: The isolated microorganisms most frequently were: U. urealyticum, N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis. There is an increase of 7% of prevalence between the years 2003 and 2005. Ceftriaxone, claritromicine and amoxicilline/clavulanic acid were susceptible to all the strains studied and cefotaxime to all Haemophilus spp.

Introduction: Infection with Chlamydia trachomatis is a sexually transmitted bacterial disease most common in the world., Material and Methods: Determination through the PCR technique the presence of C. trachomatis in 98 cervical samples by amplifying a fragment of DNA plasmid cryptic. We investigated medical variables of interest and contraceptive methods in the population. Variables were compared between the positive and negative patients to infection with C. trachomatis using the test of Mann-Whitney U test and Chi square with the program SigmaStat version 2.0. We considered statistically significant as those values of p < 0.001., Results: 20 samples were found positive for infection with C. trachomatis of the 98 patients studied, indicating a prevalence of 20.4% of the total group. The variables analyzed showed a statistically significant difference in the number of abortions, which were higher for patients positive for the infection., Conclusions: The prevalence found in this study suggests that infection with C. trachomatis is an issue of concern in public health, it requires the count on diagnostic techniques, such as PCR favoring an increase in the detection and early treatment in reducing the spread of the infection and long-term sequelae, so that justifies his provide detection in a broader way.

Background: Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide. In women, chlamydia infections are 75% asymptomatic and can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. Infants exposed to the microorganism at birth also have a high risk to develop conjunctivitis and pneumonia., Aim: To determine the prevalence of C trachomatis in women in the Metropolitan area of Santiago (Chile)., Patients and Methods: Cervical specimens were collected from 403 women attending three gynecological outpatient settings from April 2003 to June 2005. These included one public hospital (n=100), a private medical center (n=268), and a clinic for adolescents (n=35). Mean ages of each group of patients were 35.6+/-8,2, 33.4+/-8.1 and 16.9+/-4.2 years, respectively. The diagnosis of C trachomatis was performed by the amplification by PCR of a 517-base pair segment of the cryptic plasmid on specimens extracted by a commercial procedure. Positive specimens were confirmed by nested PCRs targeting the ompl gene. The presence of vaginal infections and its association with C trachomatis was investigated in a subset of 223 women of the private center., Results: C trachomatis was detected in the cervix of 19 out of 403 women, resulting in a prevalence of 4.7%. The distribution of positive cases among different age groups was not significantly different. Women presenting with bacterial vaginosis had a significantly higher prevalence of C trachomatis infection (p<0.01)., Conclusions: This study found a high prevalence of C trachomatis among gynecologic patients that should prompt preventive strategies.

Objective: Evaluating Chlamydia trachomatis infection prevalence in a group of symptomatic and asymptomatic females attending gynaecology services in health centres in Maracaibo in the state of Zulia in Venezuela., Methodology: 168 patients attending two health centres in Maracaibo were included in this study. Gynaecological evaluation was based on examining the pelvis, deep areas of the vagina and the cervix. Patients were classified into groups according to age and the presence of clinical manifestations. Two DNA amplification assays of endogenous plasmid and the omp1 gene taken from endocervical swabs were used for investigating C. trachomati., Results: 168 patients were evaluated; 81 (48,2 %) were symptomatic and 87 (51,8 %) asymptomatic, A 7,7 % prevalence (p>0.05) was found in the total population (9,9 % prevalence for symptomatic patients and 5,8 % for asymptomatic ones). The 18- 28 year old patient group exhibited the highest prevalence (13,7 %) (p=0.0322). The predominant clinical manifestations were mucopurulent secretion (35,8 %) and cervicitis (21 %). C. trachomatis was detected in 7,1 % of patients having mucopurulent secretion and 23,5 % of cervicitis cases; however, no significant association between infection and individual clinical manifestations was shown (p>0.05)., Conclusion: Medium C. trachomatis infection prevalence was found In the population being assessed here, the highest frequency being exhibited in young females. This microorganism should be investigated in sexually-active young women, regardless of their symptomatic or asymptomatic status.

Chlamydiae are a singular group of bacteria, with a vital cycle that is intracellular in part. These microorganisms adhere to epithelia, where they may provoke infection. There are three pathogenic species for humans: Chlamydia trachomatis, which produce infections mainly in the genital and urinary tracts, and C. psittaci and C. pneumoniae, which mostly produce respiratory infections. The last two microorganisms are now classified in a different genus, known as Chlamydophila.

One of the world-wide most prevalent sexually transmitted pathogens is Chlamydia trachomatis. Technical limitations in their detection difficult the estimation of it true prevalence. The aim of this study was to investigate C. trachomatis prevalence in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients by two PCR assays. DNA extraction of endocervical swabs from 105 patients were performed and the samples tested by PCR. Positive samples for C. trachomatis were considered if fragments in both PCR reactions were observed. The prevalence rates were 13.7%, 7.4% and 10.4% for the symptomatic, asymptomatic patients and the total population, respectively. Highest prevalence was registered in symptomatic 20 to 30 years old patients. (19.2%) Chlamydia trachomatis prevalence in the population was relatively high and is desirable to apply diagnostics strategies as the reported one in this study to detect the pathogen and offer an adequate and opportune treatment to patients.

Introduction: The aim of this study is to analyze the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in patients attended in a clinic for sexually transmitted disease in Seville (Spain). Microbiological diagnosis was performed in various types of samples., Material and Methods: The study included 3854 patients (50.8% women and 49.2% men, mean age 30.1 years) seen from 2002 to 2004. Among the total, 50% belonged to groups engaging in high risk sexual practices: female commercial sex workers (CSWs) (47%), men who maintain sexual relationships with other men (MSM) (45%), users of prostitution (4%), promiscuous heterosexual men (4%), those with a risk partner (2.7%) and injection drug users (IDU) (2.2%). We analyzed a total of 5978 samples (2384 cervical exudates, 2645 urethral exudates and 949 rectal exudates), for the detection of C. trachomatis by PCR technique with the COBAS Amplicor CT System., Results: Prevalence of C. trachomatis infection was 6% (4.3% in women and 7.8% in men). Among the total in women, 51.2% of positive samples were from women with high-risk sex factors and 73.8% of the women were asymptomatic. In men, the proportions were 70.5% and 36.9%, respectively. Cervical, urethral and rectal exudates yielded positive results in 4%, 4.9% and 4.3%, respectively., Conclusions: Systematic sampling for C. trachomatis detection is necessary in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients practicing high-risk sex; periodic follow-up studies are also needed for early detection of sexually transmitted infection. Rectal sample collection is important for detecting this infection in MSM and in patients whose sexual habits make it advisable.

The presence of Chlamydia trachomatis and human papillomavirus (HPV) was evaluated by PCR technique in 189 sexually active women, between 15 and 58 years old, with cytological abnormalities in their uterine cervical epithelium and belonging to a region of Argentina with high incidence of cervical cancer. Risk factors in relation to chlamydial infection were also analyzed. Total prevalence for C. trachomatis infection was 24.9%, but there was a significant difference between prevalence in low socio-economical level (32.9%) and high or medium socio-economical level (17.7%). Total prevalence for DNA of HPV was 52.9%, but women infected with C. trachomatis showed a higher risk for viral infection than non-infected ones (OR = 2.27 / CI 95% = 1.10-4.73), with statistical significant difference (p = 0.016).

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the utility and validity of pooling urine samples for molecular diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis infection., Material and Methods: Of 1,220 urine samples collected from Mexican female and male adolescents, 305 pools were composed of fourth individual samples each, based on a calculation of optimal pool size. These were processed by ligase chain reaction (LCR) for the detection of C. trachomatis. Positive and gray-zone pools were reanalyzed individually. Cost savings were calculated comparing actual costs of testing to the cost that would have been incurred testing all 1,220 samples individually., Results: Pools results were: 56 positive, 19 gray-zones and 230 negative. Following individual retesting of positive and gray-zone pools, 59 cases of C. trachomatis infection were identified (4.8% prevalence). Thus, a total of 601 LCR tests were performed, for a 50.4% savings considering only the direct cost of the test., Conclusions: Our experience shows that sample pooling is both a reliable and convenient tool for CT surveillance in our setting. It should be considered in other similar settings where limited resources constraint surveillance of STIs.

Objective: To determinate the frequency of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in male partners of infertile couples who attend to the infertility clinic at Instituto Nacional de Perinatología, as well as to compare the clinical data and lifestyle between C. trachomatis-infected and uninfected men to establish a possible association with gynecological damage in their sexual female partners., Methods: An open prospective study was performed in infertile couples, whose follow up was carried out at Instituto Nacional de Perinatología between June 2000 and April 2001. Urethral and cervical swabs were obtained from each couple and the specimens were subjected to a C. trachomatis-specific liquid-phase hybridization test (PACE-2) and routine microbiological analysis. Semen analysis were also included. A relative risk (RR) test was done to analyze variables and square chi test was used to analyze clinical and gynecological data from female partners and data from semen examination. Statistical differences were considered as significant when the p value was below 0.05., Results: C. trachomatis active infection was found in 14 out of 384 urethral swabs (3.6%). No significant alterations were observed in semen samples of C. trachomatis-infected men, as compared to non-infected individuals. Microbiological analyses of semen showed a significant isolation of Mycoplasma sp (RR = 5.87, IC95% 1.4-24.7). Eight out of fourteen female partners of C. trachomatis-infected men were also infected with C. trachomatis (RR = 10.57, IC95% 5.67-19.7), Candida albicans was other pathogen isolated from 8/14 of those women (RR = 1.89, IC95% 1.17-3.05). Gynecological and obstetrical associations found among female partners of C. trachomatis-infected men were as follows: tubal adhesions in 10/14 (RR = 1.54, IC95% 1.08-2.18), salpingitis in 2/14 (RR = 2.2), history of ectopic pregnancies in 11/14 (RR = 2.94, IC95% 1.01-8.53) and abnormal pregnancy loss in 9/14 (RR = 1.5)., Conclusion: A low prevalence of C. trachomatis infection was observed among male partners of infertile couples as compared with other reports, but this discrepancy could be attributable to the specimen collection and diagnostic assay used. Otherwise, this data suggests that a chronic pathogen's antigenic stimulation may result in an increased formation of tubal adhesions and/or in ectopic pregnancies among female partners of C. trachomatis-infected individuals. Thus, preventive and control measures must be introduced into men's healthcare services, through laboratory and clinical examination, since these subjects are the main reservoirs of C. trachomatis.
