Objective: This study compared the long-term effects of a mindful compassion program on improving depression in lung cancer patients, both in patient-caregiver dyads and in patient-only groups, and examined the moderating roles of anxiety and quality of life (QOL). Method: Participants consisted of 56 dyads, who were randomly assigned to either the dyadic or patient-only groups. Data collection included various assessments at different time points: baseline (T0), end of intervention (T1), and follow-up at the 5th month (T2), 8th month (T3), and 14th month (T4). Results: Patients in the dyadic group experienced a significant reduction in depressive symptoms. The dyadic intervention was particularly beneficial for younger patients and those with higher baseline QOL symptom distress. Improvements in patients’ mindfulness and self-compassion contributed to reduced depression by enhancing general health and lowering anxiety. Additionally, caregivers’ self-compassion played a role in reducing patients’ depression by improving patients’ QOL functioning and decreasing anxiety. Conclusions: Mindfulness and compassion interventions, whether provided dyadically or individually, can be tailored to each patient’s specific condition.

Epicatechin (EC) is a water-soluble natural organic compound belonging to the flavanol class of compounds. It exhibits various physiological activities such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, treatment of mitochondrial diseases, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. To examineEC’s impact and mechanism on adult myoblasts’ insulin resistance. The effects of various EC concentrations on the viability of C2C12 adult myoblasts were measured, as were glucose consumption and glycogen content; in vitro antioxidant activity of EC was measured; cellular oxidative marker content and apoptosis were measured; and protein expression was detected by Western blot. A model of insulin resistance in C2C12 myogenic cells was established using palmitic acid. EC significantly increased the glucose consumption and glycogen content; EC increased the levels of CAT, SOD and GSH and decreased the levels of NO, MDA and ROS; EC decreased the apoptosis rate of cells; EC treatment upregulated the levels of GLUT4, p-AMPK, p-ACC, NRF2, and HO-1 proteins. These results suggest that EC can regulate the NRF2/HO-1 signaling pathway, enhance GLUT4 transport, activate AMPK/ACC pathway, enhance cellular uptake of glucose, thus effectively improving insulin resistance in C2C12 cells.

Previous studies have focused on the design of video lectures to improve students’ social presence by enhancing instructor presence for learners in lecture-based online courses; however, there has been limited emphasis on the peer presence in which learning from video lectures takes place. This study’s first objective is to develop a social presence (SP)-based teaching strategy to design online learning activities aimed at improving students’ social presence by providing social clues about peer presence and encouraging peer communication. The second objective is to compare students’ social presence, social interaction, and academic performance from lecture-based online learning supported by either a conventional teaching strategy or an SP-based teaching strategy. Using a quasi-experiment, we selected 81 Chinese university students to participate in a ten-week online course. The participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (EG) (N = 43) or a control group (CG) (N = 38). This study revealed that the SP-based strategy enhanced EG members’ social presence in online learning and that EG members achieved better academic performance than CG members. A significant correlation was found between the EG members’ academic performance and their social presence. The researchers also identified more concentrated social network sociograms with more cohesive subgroups in the EG members’ online interactions. The results indicate the necessity of applying an SP-based teaching strategy in lecture-based online courses to promote students’ social presence, social interaction, and academic performance.

This study investigated the impact of Oleanolic Acid (OA) on cholesterol metabolism and. MTT assays demonstrated that OA had no cytotoxic effects on HepG2 cells at concentrations below 20 μM. Subsequent experiments focused on 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR), a key enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. OA significantly reduced HMGCR protein expression without affecting other enzymes. Further investigations revealed that OA reduced the protein and mRNA expression of HMGCR and its upstream regulator Sterol regulatory element binding protein-2 (SREBP-2) in HepG2 cells. OA activated Adenosine 5’-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK), enhancing HMGCR phosphorylation and inhibiting its activity. Molecular docking experiments suggested that OA could suppress HMGCR enzymatic activity through hydrophobic interactions, reducing catalytic efficiency. Overall, OA downregulated HMGCR expression and activity, leading to decreased cholesterol synthesis. These findings highlight OA’s regulatory role in cholesterol metabolism and its potential for improving atherosclerosis (AS), supporting its application in functional food development.

To effectively inhibit the formation of heterocyclic amines (HAs) is crucial for human health. Plant extracts with strong antioxidant activity could be applied to meat processing to prevent the formation of HAs. The results indicated that red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) stalk extracts (RPSEs) exhibited antioxidant activity during the thermal processing of meat by decreasing protein and lipid oxidation and neutralizing free radicals. And effectively inhibited the formation of HAs in beef patties with an inhibition rate ranging from 29.5% to 89.3%. These benefits were achieved without adversely affecting the physical or chemical properties of grilled beef patties, except for a slight increase in hardness. Betaine-based deep eutectic solvent extracts resulted in a significant reduction of 65.4–89.3% and 67.5–84.7% for free and protein-bound HAs. Our research introduces a novel approach to diminish the levels of HAs in meat, enabling food producers to create more safety meat options.

Wuyi rock tea residues, generated after brewing or aroma extraction, are rich in nutrients. This study aimed to prepare ACE inhibitory peptides from the protein hydrolysate of Wuyi rock tea residues and investigate their stability. The optimal proteolysis conditions for neutral protease were optimized as: a substrate concentration of 2% (w/v), pH 7.0, hydrolysis temperature of 45°C, enzymatic digestion time of 3 h, and enzyme dosage of 6800 U/g. Under these conditions, the ACE inhibition rate of protein hydrolysate of Wuyi rock tea residues reached 70.47 ± 0.29% at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL. Additionally, the prepared ACE inhibitory peptides demonstrated excellent stability against acid, base, heat, and certain metal ions. These findings suggest that the proteins extracted from Wuyi rock tea residues can serve as a promising source to produce highly active ACE inhibitory peptides. These peptides could be utilized in the development of nutraceuticals, functional foods, and pharmaceuticals.

Foods and food supply ,TX341-641 ,Food processing and manufacture ,TP368-456 - Abstract
Dihydrotanshinone I (DHT), a lipophilic compound extracted from Salvia miltiorrhiza, has cardiovascular protective effects, but the underlying molecular mechanisms of action have rarely been reported. Based on this, whether DHT affects cholesterol metabolism by regulating LDLR is investigated in this work. The results revealed that DHT can increase LDLR expression and promote LDL uptake by HepG2 cells. Meanwhile, DHT stabilizes LDLR mRNA expression by activating the epidermal growth factor receptor/extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (EGFR/erk1/2) signaling pathway. In addition, DHT inhibits the expression of the proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) by down-regulating the liver nuclear transcription factor 1 A (HNF1A) and up-regulating the forkhead box O3 (FOXO3). All of these indicate that DHT increases LDLR expression at the post-transcriptional and post-translational levels thereby promoting LDL-C metabolism. The potential mechanism of DHT to improve lipid metabolism has been revealed as a promising drug against AS.

ABSTRACT Fatigue vibration is a primary cause of fruit damage during transportation. Drawing on the Palmgren–Miner fatigue accumulation damage theory and the correlation between fruit vibration damage characteristics and external vibration excitation, this paper proposes a fruit vibration fatigue accumulation damage model and its method for parameter determination. Using pears as the research objects, we conducted fatigue damage vibration and critical fatigue damage vibration tests under various conditions to determine the vibration fatigue constant of the pears. By utilizing the critical value of the damage area specified in the pear grading standard for premium grade, we derived the threshold acceleration value for pear damage. These findings serve as a technical foundation for advancing our understanding of fruit vibration fatigue damage mechanisms and guiding the development of cushioning packaging to protect fruit from vibrations.

ABSTRACT Banana stalk production for fiber is an important crop activity in southern China. The fiber extraction technology used has a great impact on the effectiveness and quality of the fiber from banana stalks. A mechanical model of the process for banana stalk fiber extraction was developed through theoretical analysis. The existing problems of machines for banana stalk fiber extraction include high rates of fiber impurity and damaged fibers. A 3-factor 3-horizon orthogonal rotation combination test was established. The rates of fiber impurity and damaged fibers were the evaluation indices. The significant order of the factors determining the rate of fiber impurity, from largest to smallest, was the gap between the scraper and the holding plate, the number of scrapers, and the rotational speed of the scraping knives roller. The significant order of factors for the rate of damaged fiber was the gap between the scraper, the rotational speed of the scraping knives roller, and the number of scrapers. The optimized banana straw fiber extraction machine was tested in the field. The results show that the development of this model can provide valuable experience and references for understanding and improving other similar agricultural machinery and equipment.

This study constructs a deep learning-based model to predict internet addiction among college students and analyzes significant influencing factors. A random survey of 4,895 students from a university in Shandong Province was conducted using questionnaires on general information, internet addiction (CIAS-R), personality (CBF-PI-B), psychological traits (SDS, SAS), parenting styles (EMBU), behavioral issues (SAS-C), and social support (ASSRS) to establish a database. A predictive model was developed using a 1D Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN), extracting key influencing factors of internet addiction. The model showed 92.77% accuracy, with high precision and recall rates for predicting normal users and addicts. The gradient calculation indicates that in second-year students, negative and withdrawal behaviors, depression, over-interfering families, and anxiety significantly contribute to Internet addiction, with factors exceeding 0.5. The 1D-CNN model offers robust performance and accuracy in predicting internet addiction, identifying significant factors for early prevention and potential integration with apps for real-time monitoring.

ABSTRACTLow-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) play a pivotal role by regulating plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) levels. Dihydromyricetin (DMY), the most abundant natural flavonoid in rattan tea, has proven anti-atherogenic effects, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Therefore, we studied the effects of DMY on LDLR and PCSK9. The results showed DMY promoted LDLR protein and mRNA expression and increased LDL uptake in HepG2 cells. DMY inhibited intracellular PCSK9 protein and mRNA expression. And it also significantly reduced PCSK9 levels in the cell culture medium. Furthermore, DMY inhibited the expression of PCSK9 through the liver nuclear transcription factor 1 A (HNF1A) and increased the protein expression of LDLR. Taken together, our results support the idea that DMY regulates LDL-c metabolism through PCSK9/LDLR signaling. This study reveals the potential mechanism of DMY’s anti-atherogenic effect and provides a theoretical basis for dietary DMY supplementation.

ABSTRACTThe bacterial communities of Zaopocu (ZPC), a tropical specialty fermented food in Hainan Island, were characterized in this study using high-throughput sequencing. Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the two dominant phyla. The primary genus in ZPC_A was Weissella, while ZPC_B and ZPC_C had Lactobacillus as the dominant genus. The biomarker lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in ZPC_A were Lactobacillus brevis, Weissella confusa, and Leuconostoc citreum, whereas Lactobacillus amylolyticus and Lactobacillus helveticus were significantly higher in ZPC_B. In contrast, Lactobacillus pontis and Lactobacillus fermentum were the core LAB in ZPC_C. ZPC_A has the highest value of titratable acid (TA), amino acid, and lactic acid. TA had the most powerful influence on the structure of the bacterial communities, whereas salinity had a negligible effect. It is worth noting that ZPC may also faces food safety issue because opportunistic pathogenic bacteria like Stenotrophomonas and genes closely associated with Staphylococcus aureus infection were highly detected.

ABSTRACTUltrasonic-assisted enzymatic extraction (UAEE) technology was employed to extract the polysaccharides from Dendrobium offcinale Kimura et Migo (D. offcinale). The extraction conditions were optimized by central composite design (CCD) found in the response surface methodology (RSM). The polysaccharide yield (34.05 ± 1.03%) was well matched with the predicted value, as obtained under the optimum parameters: enzyme activity of 2040 U/g, a liquid-solid ratio of 71 mL/g, and a time of 84 min. Compared to other extraction methods, UAEE was able to yield D. offcinale polysaccharide (DOP) highly efficiently in a shorter extraction time period and at a lower extraction temperature. The extracted polysaccharide (DOPUAEE) showcased a better nitrite scavenging ability, a high antioxidant activity, and more potency in inhibiting α-glucosidase, expanding its versatility in food applications.

ABSTRACTGlycoprotein VI (GPVI) is the major collagen receptor on the platelet surface and is important in mediating granule secretion and atherothrombosis. Sulforaphane (SFN), a dietary isothiocyanate enriched in cruciferous vegetables, exerts multiple biological activities. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of SFN on GPVI-mediated signaling and platelet granule secretion in vitro. We herein demonstrated that SFN greatly attenuated granule secretion in human gel-filtered platelets in response to collagen, including inhibiting CD62P and CD63 expression and PF4, CCL5, and ATP release. Mechanistically, these inhibitory effects of SFN were mainly mediated by its attenuation of cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) phosphorylation and thromboxane A2 (TxA2) generation. Moreover, SFN did not further decrease the inhibitory effects of p38 MAPK inhibitor SB203580 on cPLA2 phosphorylation, TxA2 generation and granule secretion. Thus, SFN attenuates platelet granule secretion via down-regulating GPVI-mediated p38 MAPK/cPLA2/TxA2 signaling, which may play important preventive roles in cardiovascular diseases.

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to analyze metabolite abundances and proteome differences between buffalo milk from Binglangjiang (BBM) and Dehong (DBM). Untargeted UPLC-MS/MS, label-free proteomics approach, and bioinformatics analyses including GO, KEGG, and PPI were performed. The results revealed that catechol, L-proline, γ-aminobutyric acid, hippuric acid, creatinine, and betaine were detected in BBM and DBM as the major metabolites. One hundred thirteen proteins, mainly within the molecular weight range of 20–80 kDa, were identified, and the differential protein numbers of BBM were higher than those of DBM. These proteins were primarily involved in cholesterol metabolism, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella infections, the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor signaling pathway, and coagulation cascades. Relative abundances of α-s1-casein, α-s2-casein, and β-casein were plentiful in BBM, while κ-casein, albumin, and α-lactalbumin were in DBM. PPI network analysis indicated that the identified proteins were highly interconnected. These findings promote a better understanding of quality biomarkers in dairy product improvements.

ABSTRACTThe effects of microbial contamination on the rancidity of Huangjiu (Chinese rice wine) during pottery jar storage were studied. With the increase in the rancidity of Huangjiu, the alcohol content decreased, while the conductivity increased significantly. The sour taste and umami taste of Huangjiu increased, leading to flavor deterioration. Meanwhile, the increase in biogenic amine content makes Huangjiu unfit for drinking. The changes in components showed that the degree of rancidity was related to the metabolism of organic acids and amino acids caused by contaminated microorganisms. According to the analysis of microbial community structure, more microorganisms were found in the severe rancid Huangjiu. This indicated that with the aggravation of the degree of rancidity, the community structure of the contaminated microorganisms becomes complex, and potentially pathogenic microorganisms such as Arcobacter species were detected. Therefore, the change of components of Huangjiu will also affect the community structure of contaminated microorganisms.

Abstract In the past ten years, new progress has been made in the study of Chinese overseas, which provides important scientific basis for the work of Chinese overseas and the formulation of relevant policies. Through data mining and analysis of overseas Chinese literature from 2008 to 2021, this work studied the co-occurrence relationships among keywords, authors, research institutions, publication sources of target articles, references and citations. The results suggest a few things. In terms of keyword analysis, there is a high probability that keywords coexist among overseas Chinese, Chinese society and Chinese history. In addition, the degree of cooperation between authors and research institutions in overseas research in China is not high. In terms of target journals, references and citations, resources such as Journal of Overseas Chinese Historical Studies, Overseas Chinese Publishing Company and People’s Publishing House are the main publications published by most overseas Chinese research institutions. In addition, academic articles cite fewer of the journal’s journals. Based on the above problems, this study puts forward relevant recommendations for decision-making, in order to further promote the exchange, sharing and development of China’s overseas research results.

In this work, the effects of electric pulse treatment on the discharge and electrochemical properties of rolled and extruded AZ61 as anode of Mg-air battery were studied. The microstructure, electrochemical behavior and surface morphology after discharge were discussed to relate the discharge performance. The experimental results show that compared with the original magnesium anode (rolled and extruded), the magnesium anode treated by electric pulse has more negative corrosion potential, lower impedance value, higher discharge voltage and better specific energy. This is because electric pulse treatment can cause the coarse second phase in magnesium anode to dissolve and the grains to become more uniform. In particular, in the discharge process, the surface of magnesium anode after electric pulse treatment will form micro cracks, which is beneficial to promote the self-stripping of discharge products. It is worth noting that the effect of electric pulse treatment on rolled anode is better than that of extruded anode. It may be due to the different dislocation density in the two anodes. During the electric pulse treatment, the dislocation density in the alloy is highly correlated with the dissolution rate of β-Mg17Al12, which ultimately affects the volume fraction of the second phase in the alloy.

In the fiercely competitive landscape of the peer-to-peer accommodation platform Airbnb, understanding customers’ online recommendation behavior is essential for optimizing competitiveness and harnessing the potential of electronic word-of-mouth. This study aims to provide comprehensive insights into the factors driving customers’ issuance of positive or negative recommendations based on their experiences. Leveraging 10,101 online reviews from Airbnb users, we employ the Structural Topic Model to determine latent topics relating to customers’ recommendation intentions. This study reveals that positive recommendations are primarily influenced by hedonic values tied to the overall experience, including crucial aspects such as convenience for exploring points of interest, local authenticity, social interaction, and emotional fulfillment. These findings highlight the significance of providing memorable and enriching experiences to elicit positive reviews from customers. On the other hand, negative recommendations are closely linked to utilitarian values focused on practical concerns such as check-in procedures, cleanliness, comfortableness, and amenities. Understanding these utilitarian factors is vital for hosts and platform administrators to improve service quality and address potential issues that may lead to negative reviews. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the significant role of hosts in shaping both positive and negative recommendations. This research contributes valuable insights to the field of peer-to-peer accommodation, highlighting the significance of various factors influencing customers’ recommendation behavior.

From the Past to the Present, Taiwan, as part of the Chinese cultural circle, has experienced distinct changes in family reality. Politics, economy, migration, and globalization have been or are the crucial factors influencing families. Polygamy, extended family, nuclear family, transnational family, same-sex marriage and diversified family construct the contexts of families in Taiwan. These multi-family forms seem to ingratiate themselves with the popular concept of ‘diversity’, which has been articulated since the 21st century. Many people think that ‘diversity’ could eliminate conflicts, because not any part will be ignored; ‘diversity’ shows tolerance and social progress. In fact, there are at the same time, increasing conflicts and problems occurring because of diversity. What would be the potential causes of problems? And how could these problems and conflicts in the families be dealt with? The core solutions seem not easy to find. Since the 1960s, Chiara Lubich’s concepts: ‘unity’, ‘mutual love’, and ‘the model of the new family’ have spread into Taiwan. Her concepts have influenced many families to live in a new way. In this paper, several historical and current family models in Taiwan as well as the relationship between Chiara Lubich’s concept of ‘unity’ and families will be explored to see whether her concepts could be a possible path to reconcile the conflicts of families, and how it could be possibly put into practice.

Abstract Contributions from traditional knowledge and history have proven useful in recent years to advance drug discovery. In response to the emergence of covid-19, scientists revisited traditional Chinese medicine. This source of inspiration for drugs to treat this new disease is described here at three different levels: traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, traditional Chinese medical formulas, and traditional Chinese medical texts. Drug discovery inspired by traditional Chinese medicine still faces serious resistance for various reasons, including its system of formulas and clinical trial design. A perspective that includes related issues would benefit the reasonable application of traditional knowledge in drug research and development.

1,3-Dioleoyl-2-palmitoylglycerol (OPO) was synthesized by enzymatic interesterification using palm stearin rich in tripalmitin (PPP) and ethyl oleate. Enzymatic interesterification parameters such as temperature, water content, enzyme load, and substrate molar ratio were optimized. High contents of C52 (primarily OPO and its isomeric compounds) production (46.7%) and sn-2 palmitic acid (PA) content of 75.3% were detected. In addition, OPO-human milk fat substitute (HMFS) was blended with coconut, soybean, algal and microbial oils at a weight ratio of 0.70:0.18:0.11:0.004:0.007 to simulate fatty acids in human milk fat (HMF) according to the mathematical model. The main and important fatty acids in the Final-HMFS were within the ranges of those present in HMF. The Final-HMFS could promote the absorption of fats and minerals and the development of retina tissues in infants. The mixture of L-ascorbyl palmitate (L-AP) and vitamin E (VE) resulted in a synergistic antioxidant effect both in OPO-HMFS and OPO-HMFS emulsions. This finding has great significance in improving the quality and extending shelf-life of HMFS.
