Having the South American Amazon as our spatial cut, this paper aims to discuss it as a space of physical, environmental and socioeconomic relevance to regional rearticulation, highlighting the issue of transport infrastructure and the importance of Brazil to boost this process in contemporary times. With the end of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) in 2019, several of its councils were paralyzed and discontinued, such as the Infrastructure and Planning Council (Cosiplan), reflecting the abandonment of efforts built since the beginning of the 21st century. In addition, relations between national preferences and the indispensable search for development, and mechanisms of cooperation and regional integration, which are fundamental instruments to meet such demands, were stressed. In turn, a scenario of discredited institutions made room for greater action by multiple public and private, internal and increasingly international and multinational actors who, in a way disconnected from regional arrangements, directed infrastructure investments focusing on their own interests, resulting in expiation of the the socio-environmental vulnerability in the Amazonian territories. We argue that it is necessary to integrate to preserve and develop. Regional governance and institutionality are central pillars for the resumption of a more resilient South American integration process, aimed at protecting and developing the Amazon, in which Brazil has an important driving role to be exercised and a directive leadership to retrieve.

Mitigation of fungal biodeterioration on paper documents and artworks represents a challenge to conservators worldwide. Numerous lists of fungal species have been identified from paper collections, but are those species responsible for the respective biodeterioration phenomena or just environmental contaminants? The present work was aimed at obtaining an association between specific fungal stains and causative fungal species. 23 stains from three paper documents were sampled. Fungal structures observed in situ with optical and scanning electron microscopy were compared with the identification of isolates by molecular biology tools. Correlation between the observed fungal structures and the identified fungal isolates was achieved, varying from 13% to 64% of the samples within the three studied documents. Grey/black and dark brown stains were associated with Chaetomium globosum, C. murorum, Penicillium chrysogenum, P. commune, Myxotrichum deflexum and Stachybotrys chartarum. Eurotium rubrum was isolated from a foxing stain and Penicillium citrinum was identified on light orange stains.

La práctica artística contemporánea tuvo un espacio de reflexión y creación de opinión en las páginas de Papers d’Art. De la mano de un conjunto de voces propias e independientes se visibilizaron formas de producción artística multidisciplinarias, desde la perspectiva divulgadora de una crítica que conectaba dinámicamente los significados artísticos con los sociales y culturales. Conviene resaltar el desplazamiento del significado de la concepción del arte contemporáneo en calidad de pieza clave en la cultura intelectual, incluyendo política, filosofía, ciencia u otros formatos de creación como la música y la literatura. Partiendo del análisis de la conciencia crítica de los diferentes colaboradores y la investigación historiográfica en torno a cuestionamientos estéticos y simbólicos, se despliega una revisión del conjunto de los discursos incluidos en la sección Estudios e Investigación. Contents of the Study and Research section Abstract: Contemporary artistic practices were provided with a space for reflection and the creation of opinion in the galleries of the Fundació Espais and in the pages of its art magazine, Papers d’Art. A group of independent voices of multidisciplinary artistic production was made audible thanks to this publication that provided a critique which forged dynamic connections between artistic meaning and social and cultural contexts. This paper highlights a shift in meaning of the conception of contemporary art as a key element in intellectual culture, including politics, philosophy, science and other creative formats such as music and literature. Based on an analysis of the critical awareness of the various contributors to the magazine and on the historiographic study of certain aesthetic and symbolic questions, a review of the articles published in the Studies and Research section is detailed. La regió més oriental d’Ucraïna, el Donbass, viu des de fa vuit anys una sagnant guerra en què Rússia s’ha vist directament involucrada. A més, la regió ha estat objecte de la propaganda russa, que l’ha utilitzat com un dels principals motius per justificar la seva intervenció militar sobre Ucraïna, el febrer de 2022. Tots els bàndols implicats en aquest conflicte argumenten que estan protegint els interessos i els desitjos dels seus habitants. Però aquests interessos i desitjos, a més de ser sovint manipulats, han sofert moltes modificacions i pressions després d’una guerra tan llarga, que entre altres coses ha fet que prop de la meitat dels habitants hagin abandonat la regió, i la resta es vegi sota una pressió militar, política i mediàtica constant. Aquest article intenta ser una anàlisi i una reflexió sobre l’autèntica voluntat dels habitants del Donbass, com també de la manipulació que estan sofrint.

This article analyzes the social production of space in Atenquique, an industrial town in the southern region of Jalisco in western Mexico. The theoretical framework draws on insights from critical geography. Through the case of Atenquique we reflect on the transformation of the area from the beginning of the neoliberal period in Mexico. Neoliberalism ushered in the growth of precarious and insecure working conditions, something which has deepened over the past several decades. The methodology employed is based on ethnographic research undertaken over a period of four months in Atenquique. During this time period we used three different audiovisual methods to collect information: photography, oral history and the production of an ethnographic documentary film. The results of the study show how the ex-inhabitants of Atenquique have knit together complex constructions- both material and symbolic- that provide insight on how the changes of the past several decades have affected the area. In the conclusions, we return to the broader debates on the local and territorial consequences of the implementation of the neoliberal policies in Mexico.

L’objectiu d’aquest article és traçar la biografia i mostrar l’ús social d’uns petits objectes de paper maixé pertanyents a la tradició de Takamatsu-hariko (Japó) que es conserven al Museu Etnològic de Barcelona. A través del seu estudi veurem el paper representatiu i simbòlic que tenen dins l’univers(os) femení japonès i podrem accedir a llegendes, tradicions populars i antics costums relacionats amb l’imaginari femení.

RESUMEN: Este artículo aborda un tema de especial relevancia en la dinámica académica actual y en el proceso de formación de los estudiantes de pre y postgrado, pues se relaciona directamente con los procesos de enseñanza y evaluación. Por ello este texto aborda dos procesos relacionados directamente con el quehacer investigativo, dado que se centra en la enseñanza de la metodología de la investigación y en la evaluación de trabajos de grado y tesis doctorales y en las habilidades y competencias que deben desarrollar los docentes para realizar estas actividades. ABSTRACT: This article discusses a topic of particular relevance in the current academic dynamics and in the process of training of undergraduate and graduate students, as it is directly related to the teaching and evaluation processes. That is why this text addresses these two processes directly related to research activities, given that it focuses on the teaching of research methodology and evaluation of research papers and doctoral theses, as well as in the skills and competencies that teachers must develop for carrying out these activities.

En la carrera de Licenciatura en Historia la asignatura Práctica Laboral III forma parte de la disciplina preprofesional. La misma constituye un medio importante en la formación del futuro profesional en tanto aporta los elementos teóricos y prácticos necesarios para el desarrollo de las capacidades y habilidades investigativas en el 3er año de la carrera. Durante el período de práctica, los estudiantes realizan un grupo de actividades que le permiten adentrarse en las gestiones propias de la institución a la cual se vinculan que en el caso resulta ser el Archivo Histórico Provincial de la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba. En esa etapa desarrollan actividades investigativas que tributan a la elaboración del Trabajo de Curso. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo demostrar el papel de la Práctica Laboral III en la formación del profesional de la Historia.

Aquest article es proposa estudiar la repercussió que les xarxes de contactes i els cercles de músics tenen en la generació d’oportunitats de feina en el camp musical del jazz. La recerca s’emmarca en la perspectiva del concepte de camp artístic de Pierre Bourdieu (1984, 1987) i de les principals característiques que conformen els cercles col·laboratius segons Michael P. Farrell (2003). La metodologia és de caràcter qualitatiu i es basa en la realització (entre 2015 i 2016) d’entrevistes semiestructurades i en observació participant amb músics de l’escena jazz de la ciutat de Barcelona. A partir d’aquest treball de camp, es van analitzar les aportacions principals que les xarxes de contactes i els cercles col·laboratius dels músics de jazz ofereixen a l’hora de generar oportunitats de feina en el camp artístic musical. També es va estudiar de quina manera el treball col·lectiu i la conformació de grups musicals esdevenen una plataforma artístico-creativa fonamental tant per al desenvolupament de les carreres individuals dels músics com en el camp d’exploració conjunta del propi llenguatge musical.

Abstract This study examined the challenges and prospects of the use of the Yoruba Language for legislative business in the Lagos State House of Assembly. The Assembly adopted the use of the Yoruba language for its deliberation every Thursday in 2007. This study made use of an in-depth interview guide to elicit responses from research subjects, who were drawn from among the Legislative officers, aides, and assistants, totaling ten. In addition, we consulted archival notes, Order Paper, Proceedings of the House, newspapers, and other recorded material. Our findings revealed that there is an insufficient number of Yoruba legislative reporters, while some legislators are still trying to grapple with the use of Yoruba. Similarly, most statutory committee members do not speak the Yoruba language during meetings or public hearings. The prospects of the initiative include, among others, bringing legislative practice to the doorstep of the common man. For instance, the House has now passed a bill into law making Yoruba language compulsory both as a subject and a language in Lagos State public schools toward the growth of the economy of Lagos State.

En la película La lavandería (2019), disponible en Netflix y basada en el escándalo de Panama Papers, se muestra la corrupción del mundo de una forma irónica y cómica, además, de poner en evidencia cómo las personas son utilizadas para alimentar cada vez más a los corruptos. Esta película trata de explicar todas las jugadas sucias o eso trata ya que se debe ver más de una vez para entender y buscar herramientas para proteger a los consumidores financieros.

O capitalismo demanda um sistema mundial, pois precisa de larga escala para funcionar, e as redes sociais são importante instrumento para sua expansão. A questão poderia ser vista como meramente comercial não fosse o fato de todas as empresas dominadoras desse segmento serem americanas e os EUA serem o representante-mor do capitalismo e eterno candidato a império mundial. Nesse ponto as coisas se embaralham. Essas plataformas foram criadas para a interação social, contudo propiciam também o compartilhamento de informação. Mais ainda: possibilitam a criação e publicação de conteúdos por qualquer pessoa. Publicar conteúdo não implica afirmar que se publique verdades. “Quem detém informação detém poder”, é ditado antigo. No mundo moderno, o poder se encontra na desinformação. E a desinformação tem corroído democracias. Fake news são o recurso mais eficaz para polarizar uma sociedade de modo a perturbá-la em variados níveis, em diversas esferas, predispondo-a a conflitos. A ascensão da extrema direita mundo afora, por exemplo, é fruto do adensamento desses grupos nas redes sociais. E “as direitas”, extrema ou moderada, são francamente capitalistas, defensoras da concentração de renda, da exploração da força de trabalho e do extrativismo irresponsável de recursos naturais.

Cet article identifie les raisons pour lesquelles les lecteurs qué-bécois de livres papier ne lisent pas de livres numériques. Après analyse de données recueillies lors de onze entretiens effectués auprès de personnes de plus de 15 ans exclusivement lectrices de livres papier, les résultats indiquent qu’elles accordent une signification profonde au livre papier en tant qu’objet matériel. Les contraintes d’usage associées au livre numérique ont également tendance à les rebuter. L’expérience de lecture sur un support numérique leur semble à la fois moins confor-table et moins riche de sens. Leur réticence pourrait découler d’un sentiment d’ambivalence envers l’omniprésence du numérique dans la société et d’un malaise face à des frontières de plus en plus floues entre lecture et nu-mérique. À l’évidence, certains facteurs psychosociaux influent, comme le souci pour l’environne-ment, la vision de la technologie et le rapport entretenu avec les acteurs du livre.

The global economic crisis that began in 2008 led to major cuts to the welfare state in Spain and across Europe (Gambino, 2018), affecting key areas such as health, education, social care and youth employment. This was accompanied by drastic reductions in public spending and welfare benefits, which affected women particularly severely. Through ethnographic fieldwork with a gender and feminist perspective, this paper attempts to cast light on the trajectories of young Spanish women who emigrated to London in the ambiguous ‘au pair’ category. The figure of the au pair is interesting because it is an ad hoc, liminal, ambiguous, transient construction configured in such a way that it is ‘between’ categories, spaces and bounds, responding to the domestic care needs of English families’ offspring as part of a commodification of care brought about by a lack of regulation and resources from the state. The employment trajectories and strategies of young Spanish women are embedded in a context of precarious employment, in which young women with secondary and higher education seek financial and personal autonomy but are compelled to negotiate gender norms in order to overcome structural inequalities that increasingly devalue care work. The naturalisation of care and its attribution to women, as well as the ongoing association of women with the ‘good mother’ model, serves to reinforce gender hierarchies.

When examining citizens’ behaviour in elections to the European Parliament (EP), second order elections (SOE) and economic voting (EV) have overlooked each other as alien traditions. However, they should not be seen as incompatible: voters may use EP elections to support national incumbents but, at the same time, this support may be the result of an economic assessment. This paper blends both frameworks and finds that, even though EP elections are not intended to evaluate domestic politics, voters use them to reward or punish national incumbents (i.e. SOE) for the state of the economy (i.e. EV); a behaviour referred to here as ‘second-order economic voting’. The predominance of second-order EV is relevant for EU politics. If EP elections enhance national incumbents’ accountability while the European executive remains unacknowledged, this could be disturbing for European economic institutions.

Political scientists have studied state democracy for decades using sophisticated methods for conceptualization and measurement to evaluate the explanatory power of various theories. They have paid little attention, however, to democracy in nonstate political systems. This paper fills this gap by characterizing democracy in college student government and investigating the factors affecting the levels of students’ union democracy (SUD) in Chilean colleges. Utilizing concepts from political science and sociology, the study identifies different dimensions of SUD with data from 162 campuses in 2018. The dimensions are aggregated to build an index of democracy for students’ unions. Although the majority of Chilean university students attended colleges with democratic unions, our findings reveal a deficit in democratic student representation in most institutions. The article also draws from the comparative politics, trade union democracy, and higher education literatures to explore the factors that vary by institution that could explain differences in levels of SUD. Ordered logistic regression analyses suggest that SUD is associated with institutional quality, membership in inter-university organizations, and student body size and socioeconomic makeup. The results increase our understanding of the features, status, and correlates of democracy beyond the state.

This article analyses the contested interconnections between global structures and the living and working conditions of female temporary migrant workers by exploring the transnational condition as a means of understanding intensive and insecure post-Fordist work in late global capitalism, particularly in southern Europe. Building on existing research of migrant work experiences in the agro-business industry, the main part of the article considers three ethnographic questions: What is the impact of the transnational economy on these guest workers’ lives? How does this concept relate to the working lives of women? And how can we understand the impact of intermediaries and global elites in such transnational practices? We employ the concept of transnational space applied to southern Europe alongside notions of “mobility strategies” to advance sociological inquiry into the intersections between different fieldworks – in Andalusia and the Meknes province in Morocco – and the conceptual debate concerning women’s lives and experiences in transnational migration. In this guest worker model, workers who live in one country and work seasonally in another typically come from rural areas and reside abroad in barracks-style accommodations with fellow citizens. What are the challenges for women involved in such a model in terms of recruitment, transportation, work, leisure and return to origin? What space is left for social justice?

En esta introducción se presenta un análisis del estado de la cuestión de los debates sociológicos en torno a las principales teorías contemporáneas sobre la movilidad, la inmovilidad y la migración. Se parte de un análisis que tiene en cuenta tanto el giro a la movilidad propuesto por Mimi Sheller y John Urry, como los aportes de la perspectiva transnacional en los estudios migratorios, para recentrar la movilidad en la disciplina de la sociología y, en particular, en las ciencias sociales. Este ejercicio teórico se realiza con el trasfondo de la intersección o articulación explicativa de las múltiples crisis contemporáneas y entendiendo que la forma de rescatar el estudio de la movilidad para la sociología parte de entender que esta está atravesada por procesos de estratificación social. Se realiza, además, una síntesis de las principales contribuciones al debate sobre las cuestiones de movilidad e inmovilidad en el ámbito de la sociología de las migraciones. Además, se incorpora una reflexión en torno al papel de las distintas crisis (especialmente, la recesión económica de 2008, el Brexit y la pandemia por covid-19) en la comprensión de los procesos de movilidad e inmovilidad y su análisis por parte tanto de la sociología como de los estudios migratorios. Por último, se revisan las aportaciones de cada uno de los artículos incluidos en este monográfico al debate académico sobre movilidad/inmovilidad.

Este artículo pretende analizar el impacto social y político de la salida del Reino Unido de la Unión Europea en la reciente emigración española residente en este país. Este proceso político tuvo un impacto en el estatus de los españoles como residentes en el Reino Unido, pasando a convertirse en inmigrantes extranjeros y, por tanto, regidos por la normativa de extranjería. Concretamente, se pretende realizar una aproximación a la evolución de los flujos de entrada y salida de españoles del Reino Unido y al impacto del proceso político en la decisión de permanecer, retornar o reemigrar. La metodología que se utilizará es doble. Por un lado, se centra en el análisis cuantitativo de las migraciones a partir de los microdatos de la Encuesta de Variaciones Residenciales. Por otro lado, se analizan un total de treinta entrevistas a emigrantes españoles que vivieron en Reino Unido durante el proceso de la salida de este país de la Unión Europea (2016-2020), en las que se estudiarán sus discursos sobre el proceso del Brexit y sus narrativas sobre este proceso político. Los resultados permiten ver que hay un rechazo unánime, por parte de los emigrantes españoles, a la salida del Reino Unido de la Unión Europea. Por otro lado, se observa que no se perciben actitudes hostiles en su vida diaria. Finalmente, se comprueba que el proceso de salida afecta principalmente a las personas con menor tiempo de residencia en Reino Unido y mucho menos a quienes pudieron acceder al estatus de residencia permanente.

Este artículo analiza los procesos de migración sucesiva de inmigrantes residentes en España con destino a otros países europeos a partir de la Gran Recesión de 2008, enmarcándolos en el contexto general de cambio de ciclo migratorio en España y de auge de las migraciones intraeuropeas. El objetivo central reside en indagar en el papel estratégico que tiene la intensificación de la movilidad emigrando a un segundo país para sortear las consecuencias de la crisis y cómo estas estrategias pueden verse condicionadas por los efectos inmovilizantes de otras crisis, como el proceso de salida de la Unión Europea por parte del Reino Unido (Brexit). Se incidirá en el papel central del acceso a la nacionalidad española para los proyectos de migración sucesiva de las personas inmigrantes. La aproximación metodológica de la investigación es de carácter mixto y combina el análisis sociodemográfico de los flujos de migraciones sucesivas a partir de fuentes estadísticas oficiales, con las entrevistas cualitativas con migrantes sucesivos procedentes de España y emigrados y emigradas al Reino Unido, Alemania y Francia. La perspectiva de análisis combina las escalas micro (migrante individual) y meso (hogar transnacional migrante) para comprender cómo se desarrolla y se articula la estrategia de movilidad a través de la migración a un segundo país de destino.

Este artículo analiza la reemigración de mujeres latinoamericanas residentes en España para trabajar en un sector agrícola de la Provenza (Francia) en el contexto posterior a la crisis económica de 2008 y a la ocasionada por la pandemia del covid-19. Se analizan las trayectorias laborales y de movilidad de estas trabajadoras desde una perspectiva feminista, en la que se contempla la articulación entre los cuidados y el trabajo remunerado. Este análisis nos ha permitido aproximarnos tanto a las subjetividades y a las estrategias de las trabajadoras como a las transformaciones que, a raíz de ambas crisis, están teniendo lugar en este enclave de agricultura intensiva provenzal. Los resultados muestran que, para estas mujeres, dicha movilidad posee efectos ambivalentes, pues les ha permitido mejorar sus condiciones de vida y acceder a salarios más elevados, pero también las ha relegado a unos empleos con los que no se identifican y que se caracterizan por una gran dureza física y malas condiciones laborales. Asimismo, hemos visto que, junto a factores estructurales relacionados con la situación socioeconómica y de los mercados laborales, el trabajo reproductivo, concretamente el cuidado de hijos e hijas pequeños, modela las trayectorias profesionales y de movilidad de estas trabajadoras. Este artículo es fruto de una investigación cualitativa, en la que se han realizado observaciones y entrevistas en profundidad.

Results from the European project RESISTIRÉ show that the pandemic outbreak and policies adopted to contain the virus have reinforced pre-existing gender inequalities, resulting in a “spiral of increasing inequalities” (Axelsson et al., 2021: 110). The care domain is a key part of this spiral and has been at the centre of debates and of some of the COVID-19 policy responses. However, for the most part, policy interventions in the care domain have focused primarily on work-life balance, neglecting the impact of health-related policy restrictions on domestic workers – a highly feminised and racialised sector. Yet these workers have been dramatically affected by the pandemic and related policies, not only in terms of exposure to infection, but also in terms of exacerbation of pre-existing and intersecting inequalities. Moreover, when policies did address the domestic sector, they often reproduced gender stereotyped understandings of the nature of care work, and reinforced racist assumptions on migration. This paper compares the policies on domestic workers enacted during the pandemic in Italy and Spain, which illustrate how public policy engages in gendering and racializing domestic workers. Drawing on Bacchi’s methodology, it seeks to unfold and problematise the representations and implicit assumptions related to care work, and the gender and racial hierarchies underpinning them.

Analyses show that crises like the Covid-19 pandemic had gendered effects. This paper explores its impact on gender-based violence (GBV) policies in Spain. We carry out an empirical analysis addressing the case of Information Centres for Women, a local institution in the region of Galicia aimed at promoting equality and tackling GBV. We use a survey to gather information on three key dimensions of GBV policies (resources, actions and coordination) before, during, and after the pandemic. The study shows that there were no significant setbacks in terms of funding and personnel during lockdown. Yet, resources were not enlarged despite increasing levels of violence. Actions had to focus on priority issues and preventive measures were mostly paralyzed, while coordination with other institutions became more difficult. Data gathered for the post-pandemic period indicates that some of these changes remained in place. The article contributes to academic debates by delving into an understudied policy issue: the impact of the pandemic on equality policies at the local level.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the public policies adopted to cope with the ensuing crisis had a significant impact on higher education and research institutions, and this captured the attention of numerous scholars. However, most of the analyses, especially those adopting a gender perspective, have focused on the impact of the pandemic on women as individuals (individual capabilities), while little attention has been paid to the impact on institutions and processes of structural change (collective capabilities). The capabilities approach (CA) is useful for analysing gender inequalities in higher education, and has also been used to examine the impact of the crisis on certain groups and situations. Based on the adaptation of this approach by Robeyns (2003) and Baser and Morgan (2008) to emphasise the importance of collective capabilities for individuals, institutions and society at large, this paper examines the institutional impact of the pandemic by drawing from the experiences of the six institutions in the GEARING-Roles project implementing gender equality plans (GEPs). To this end, we combine desk research of secondary sources with qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with representatives of the GEP implementers and observations of project meetings carried out between April 2020 and June 2022. Our findings indicate a considerable impact on the collective capabilities of the change agents in the participating institutions, which stem mainly from a lack of institutional commitment to the gender equality agenda, mobility restrictions and limited social relations. However, some positive elements also emerge, such as the teams’ exceptional capacity to adapt to adverse circumstances.

This paper focuses on UK-based cultural expressions of international solidarity with El Salvador either side of the end of the Cold War and El Salvador’s civil war. The article centres on a mural titled Changing the Picture, painted in Greenwich from 1985, which depicts a message of hope for overcoming state repression sponsored by multinational capital and Western powers; and Music for Hope, an ongoing musical education programme beginning in 1996-7 based in the Bajo Lempa, a coastal region of El Salvador, but set up and supported by a British solidarity network. After exploring the political meanings and initiatives of solidarity in the UK during the Salvadoran civil war, we analyse Changing the Picture’s central message of anti-imperialism, the depiction of collective popular struggle and the artwork’s place within the cultural politics of London in the mid-1980s. The paper then examines how the communitarian message of popular democracy present in the mural has been articulated in new cultural forms by Music for Hope, particularly through the latter’s pedagogical, horizontal and prefigurative practice of teaching music to children and adolescents and encouraging the formation of musical groups. As such, this paper foregrounds cultural and artistic practice as a central but underexplored dimension of international solidarity. Highlighting the literature on the shift in political culture, produced by the culmination of the Cold War, from a frame foregrounding revolutionary or political struggle to one centred on trauma, we explore how Changing the Picture and Music for Hope reflect different historical conditions. If the solidarity depicted in Changing the Picture reflected the final years of a period in which the revolutionary horizon was considered possible, Music for Hope emerged at a time that forced the initiative to confront the traumatic legacies of the civil war years. Despite these differences, the article argues that there is far more that connects the two examples, especially their emphasis on community agency. In doing so, we show that artistic expression can not only represent a powerful medium through which solidarity politics are communicated, condensing both local and international contexts in a radical vision of hope, but that cultural action can also structure the participatory practice frequently at the heart of international solidarity politics.

El artículo presenta un estudio de caso de las políticas de la Generalitat Valenciana orientadas al retorno de migrantes —la Estrategia Valenciana de Retorno y el Plan GenT—, con el propósito de enriquecer el debate teórico actual sobre la migración de retorno y las políticas de emigración. A través del análisis documental, el estudio analiza y compara los distintos elementos que componen estas políticas según la perspectiva analítica de la teoría de la acción propuesta por Subirats (2012). Los resultados del estudio muestran, por un lado, divergencias en ambas iniciativas en cuanto al carácter participado, en la representación social de la persona migrante retornada, en la percepción de la reintegración y en cómo se refleja en las medidas propuestas; mientras que, por otro lado, evidencian similitudes en la consideración del enfoque transnacional en algunos de sus supuestos y en el desarrollo de las mismas, así como en qué medida el retorno es percibido como el final del ciclo migratorio.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The article discusses the interplay between language, cognition and culture from a cognitive diachronic perspective, focusing on the relation between religion and metaphorical thought. It investigates the role of the conceptual metaphor UNDERSTANDING IS LIGHT in religious discourse, using the example of The Revelations of Divine Love, written by Julian of Norwich, a late medieval anchoress. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METODS: The paper draws on the Extended Conceptual Metaphor approach, Zoltán Kövecses’s elaboration of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT). The universalist bias of CMT means that the theory tends to ignore the sociocultural context of historical data, prioritising the influence of universal human embodiment on metaphorical thought. Using Kövecses’s approach, the paper shows how the gap in CMT methodology may be bridged to yield more reliable results. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The present study connects Kövecses’s approach to Cognitive Linguistic research into sociocultural situatedness. To exemplify the problem, the analysis examines the cognitive‑cultural underpinnings of Julian’s use of the metaphor UNDERSTAND‑ ING IS LIGHT. RESEARCH RESULTS: The analysis shows that the metaphorical conceptualisation pattern may well derive from Julian’s sociocultural situatedness. The paper indicates that the anchoress’s metaphorical thought should be seen as embedded in the late medieval sociocultural context, rather than being considered solely in terms of universal aspects of embodiment. CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND THE APPLICATIVE VALUE OF RESEARCH: The study concludes that the idea of sociocultural situatedness may be pivotal in the analyses of historical texts. It seems important to incorporate this idea into Kövecses’s approach, which may inform the methodology of cognitive diachronic research into metaphorical conceptualisations. Furthermore, the results may be applied to teaching students how to approach historical texts, helping them gain a better understanding of the relation between metaphorical thought and culture.

La emigración española hacia Europa, surgida tras la crisis económica de 2008, se describió como una migración fluida y transitoria, conocida como migración líquida. En efecto, el punto de partida de esta movilidad para muchos jóvenes españoles venía marcado por procesos como la emancipación familiar, la ampliación de estudios o la incorporación al mercado laboral. Ha pasado ya más de una década desde que algunos de estos jóvenes se marcharon y protagonizaron una transición entre la juventud y la madurez. Este artículo analiza qué motivos han provocado la transición vital desde un proyecto migratorio temporal hacia una migración permanente, una cuestión que ha recibido menor atención en la literatura académica. Los motivos de anclaje pueden resumirse en tres tipos: estar motivados por la consolidación laboral y económica, estar motivados por cuestiones vinculadas al ciclo de vida familiar (tener pareja e hijos en destino) y también a motivos involuntarios que hacen imposible el regreso a España. La metodología utilizada es de carácter cualitativo y analizará 38 entrevistas en profundidad a emigrantes españoles residentes en el Reino Unido y Francia con un proyecto migratorio de permanencia.

La distribución de áreas de poder en las democracias contemporáneas se canaliza a través de la asignación de comisiones. Tomando como punto de partida que los procesos institucionales están generizados de acuerdo con los postulados del institucionalismo feminista, en este artículo se argumenta que la asignación de comisiones sigue estando generizada incluso en un contexto de paridad. Para ello se utiliza una base de datos original sobre la composición de las comisiones y las características de los representantes de las 14 legislaturas del Congreso de los Diputados español, así como entrevistas a diputados y diputadas de la legislatura xiv. Además, se repiensan las teorías de la organización legislativa bajo una perspectiva de género, con la finalidad de comprender el fenómeno en su totalidad. La principal conclusión del presente artículo es que la distribución de materias de poder ha sido asimétrica. Mientras que en los espacios de poder tradicionalmente dominados por hombres las mujeres aumentan su presencia en paralelo a su presencia numérica en el total de la Cámara, en aquellas materias estereotípicamente femeninas la presencia de mujeres se mantiene y aumenta, siendo el género la principal variable explicativa de pertenecer a este tipo de comisiones.

Resistance in academia is a pervasive phenomenon. Gender equality was prescribed more than a decade ago in Spain, but the problem remains unsolved. Contributing to feminist institutionalism, this paper identifies both the manifestations of resistance intended to interfere in the implementation of gender equality initiatives in Spanish universities and the strategic responses enacted by gender equality agents to counteract those resistances. To this end, we conducted in-depth interviews with the female directors of Equality Units (EqUs) at six public universities in Madrid. Despite increasing support for gender equality, the research results confirm the existence of a complex web of resistance. EqUs deploy a wide range of strategies to neutralise the refusal to accept or comply with gender equality initiatives, but these are mainly, albeit not exclusively, embodied in actions of survival. We argue that although limited, these specialised bodies’ capacity for agency has not been obliterated and could be used to put alternative and more proactive counter strategies in place to bring about fundamental change. Overall, the findings yield new insights into the progress of and resistance to gender equality initiatives in universities.

This paper draws on ethnographic interviews with women-loving women (WLW) in Berbice, Guyana, South America, to interrogate the Creole linguistic term “deh” as a cultural heuristic device central to the visibility politics in this rural community. The linguistic concept of “deh” is a localized Creole (a dialect produced from the mixing of African, Indian, and Indigenous languages), which unsettles the Western image of the “closet” and the discourse of “coming out.” “Deh” is a double-entendre referring to a spatial location, like “over there,” and to a romantic or sexual relationship between two people. How might the linguistic concept of “deh” open up a discursive epistemological space where same-sex desires are not marginalized or relegated in rural spaces? How do women loving women (WLW) create the conditions for their existence in rural spaces? Analyzing nine interviews with WLW, this paper explores how Black and Brown women-loving women embody and express their same-sex desires through the Creole concept of “deh” and argues that “deh” exposes the colonial violence of language. Through “deh,” WLW offers a framework for rethinking self-making and repositioning their relationship to the broader society and the state. The colonial/modern system imposes and projects LGBTQ as a global framework for understanding human sexuality; as a transgressive linguistic and embodied sexual praxis, “deh” destabilizes the colonial knowledge of gender and sexual practices in Berbice. As such, this paper can be read as an act of decolonizing Western knowledge systems.

Los estudios sobre las actitudes hacia la inmigración se han convertido en una constante en la investigación social de los países de acogida, en buena parte por el auge de posiciones restrictivas en algunas democracias pluralistas. La elaboración de tipologías nos ofrece la posibilidad de captar la división de la población en grupos en función de sus posiciones ante la inmigración y los inmigrantes: «ver el bosque» y entenderlo, frente a la suma de árboles (ítems de encuesta sobre diferentes facetas) que impiden una visión global. En España, esta labor tipológica se venía realizando anualmente en los informes encuesta del CIS-OBERAXE, pero su edición más reciente data de 2017. El presente trabajo propone nuevos perfiles de las actitudes hacia la inmigración y los inmigrantes en España elaborados a partir de una encuesta monográfica de ámbito nacional realizada en otoño de 2020 (N = 2.344), posterior por tanto a la irrupción de Vox en las instituciones. Nuestro estudio propone cambios metodológicos que conducen a una tipología más adaptada al objeto de estudio y ofrece una mayor precisión al recoger cinco perfiles actitudinales frente a los tres contemplados por tipologías anteriores. Tres de esos cinco perfiles recogen posturas desfavorables, pero se sostienen sobre diferentes argumentos y se relacionan con distintas características sociodemográficas e ideológicas, de modo que su distinción tiene implicaciones importantes para posibles intervenciones políticas.

Existe una importante producción científica en España sobre delincuencia femenina y, especialmente, sobre la situación de las mujeres en prisión. No obstante, encontramos un vacío de conocimiento sobre esta delincuencia en etapas previas al encarcelamiento, ya que apenas hay investigaciones sobre esta cuestión y los datos oficiales ofrecen muy poca información al respecto. El objetivo de la presente investigación es conocer qué características tiene la delincuencia femenina que llega a los tribunales penales españoles y, en concreto, se quiere conocer la naturaleza de los hechos por los que son juzgadas las mujeres, así como sus circunstancias personales. Para ello, se ha diseñado una investigación transversal de carácter exploratorio en la que se han recogido datos primarios tras una revisión de 1.092 expedientes judiciales de mujeres enjuiciadas. Los resultados de este trabajo evidencian que las mujeres participan en toda clase de delitos, si bien sus delitos suelen ser poco graves y poco violentos. Asimismo, se ha podido constatar que se conoce muy poco sobre las circunstancias personales de las mujeres que llegan al sistema en calidad de acusadas. A pesar de ello, se ha podido conocer que suelen ser españolas, con dificultades económicas, y algunas de ellas con problemas de drogadicción y de salud mental. Al mismo tiempo, se ha podido observar que existe una sobrerrepresentación de algunos colectivos de mujeres —extranjeras y gitanas, principalmente—. Se debaten las implicaciones de los resultados obtenidos.

L’article aborda els canvis generacionals en la participació laboral de les dones considerant-ne l’educació i la situació familiar. Utilitzant l’Enquesta de Població Activa, s’han creat biografies laborals fictícies de dones nascudes entre 1926 i 2001. S’ha realitzat una anàlisi descriptiva de les tendències d’activitat, ocupació i atur segons l’edat, el nivell d’instrucció i la situació familiar, i s’han elaborat models de regressió logística multinomial. Els resultats minimitzen la importància atorgada a l’educació en els canvis generacionals de participació laboral femenina i indiquen factors més relacionats amb la demanda, tot i que es destaca més entre les dones que tenen de 45 a 54 anys que no pas entre les de 25 a 34 anys, quan la situació familiar té un impacte més significatiu.

Las transformaciones sociodemográficas asociadas a la gentrificación en algunos barrios de ciudades del sur de Europa están adoptando nuevos rasgos, impulsados por la migración internacional cualificada, la elevada transitoriedad de la nueva población residente y la expansión del turismo urbano. Barcelona, como foco turístico y centro de atracción para la economía del conocimiento, es un ejemplo destacado de estos procesos en los que se entrelazan diversas dinámicas. En este contexto emerge el caso de El Raval, un barrio en el que la sombra de la gentrificación sobrevuela desde hace más de dos décadas, aunque los indicadores sociodemográficos no han acabado de corroborar este proceso de forma inequívoca y general. En este trabajo profundizamos en las dinámicas sociodemográficas más recientes de El Raval a través de los movimientos residenciales y migratorios. Los resultados constatan que, a mediados de la década de 2010, se produjo un importante punto de inflexión en la transformación sociodemográfica del barrio de la mano de la creciente llegada de población extranjera con perfiles educativos y profesionales elevados y un fuerte carácter transitorio. Además, gran parte de la población desplazada también es de origen extranjero y se ve abocada a experimentar trayectorias residenciales especialmente precarias e inestables. La marcha de los grupos de bajos ingresos y su sustitución por profesionales cualificados de origen extranjero está convirtiendo El Raval en un caso emblemático de los procesos de gentrificación transnacional de las ciudades globales del sur de Europa.

Actualmente han ganado visibilidad nuevos discursos que ponen en tela de juicio la imagen hegemónica de la paternidad —vinculada al rol de proveedor económico— y que apuestan por una paternidad más involucrada y cuidadora. Dado que el género es siempre relacional y la masculinidad se define socialmente en contraposición a la feminidad, este trabajo analiza cuáles considera la ciudadanía que son las imágenes predominantes de ser padre y ser madre en la sociedad española. Para ello se ha utilizado la Encuesta Social General Española publicada en 2018 y realizada por el CIS a una muestra representativa de la población. Los resultados muestran que la ciudadanía cree que la imagen social del padre y de la madre sigue estando claramente diferenciada: para la figura paterna predomina el rol de sustentador económico de la familia, mientras que la madre aparece vinculada a las tareas rutinarias de cuidado de menores. Las mujeres, las personas con más alto nivel de estudios e ingresos y las menos religiosas son las que en mayor medida creen que la sociedad vincula la imagen del padre al rol de proveedor. Finalmente, se sugieren algunas implicaciones políticas de estos resultados, que a su vez se reflejan en las demandas sociales que señalan la necesidad de realizar un cambio real del actual modelo de paternidad.

This paper explores the impacts of Presbyterianism on Indo-Trinidadian communities in Trinidad. Through interviews with notable figures in the Church’s history, surveys within Presbyterian congregations, and in-depth research into Presbyterianism’s history in Trinidad, an analysis was conducted on how this history has shaped the Church from the twentieth to twenty-first century. General observations were also made in Presbyterian Church settings. The findings suggest that many contemporary Presbyterian practices mirror those of colonial times, albeit in a neocolonial context. Historical evidence supports the hypothesis that ideologies of Eurocentrism and elitism existed within the Presbyterian Church in eighteenth and nineteenth-century Trinidad, and aspects of these ideologies persist today. Additionally, both youth and adults within the Church express a need to address prevalent societal issues such as homosexuality, traditionally a taboo topic. Consequently, this research paper examines the concepts of “mission” and “submission”, aiming to understand the Church’s past reality, present state, and future implications within the Trinidadian Presbyterian context.
