This article examines the creation and the first year of existence of Ação da Cidadania to comprehend how it established a social justice agenda in Brazil by creating awareness and promoting solidarity. The movement redefined the issue of hunger, previously associated with poorer classes, as a problem that affects all sectors of society. Through an analysis of Betinho’s manuscripts and memoirs, promotional material from the organization, and secondary geographical data, this study presents the campaign’s role as an intermediary for hunger under a framework of space as a producer of social relations. Ação da Cidadania serves as an example of partnership and solidarity for social change, creating non-state public spaces and inspiring civil organizations and social movements.

Objectives. To determine changes to income and livelihood, food consumption, and hunger due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in three Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean: Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study conducted in July 2020. Participants were selected using telephone directories and lists of mobile numbers. Data were collected through face-to-face and telephone interviews. Participants rated the impact of COVID-19 on their livelihoods and the Adult Food Security Module was used to assess hunger. To examine how these outcomes varied by sociodemographic group, multivariable logistic regression analysis was used, with odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) reported. Results. The analysis included 880 participants. Of these, 40% (344/871) reported some form of hunger, with 18% (153/871) classed as moderate-to-severe hunger. Almost three quarters of households reported some impact on their livelihood (640/880), with 28% (243/880) classifying this impact as moderate to severe. Women were 60% more likely to report that their livelihoods were moderately to severely affected by COVID-19 (OR 1.59; 95% CI 1.09, 2.31) and 70% more likely to experience moderate-to-severe hunger (OR 1.70; 95% CI 1.37, 2.09). The effects of COVID-19 on livelihood and hunger were greater in those with secondary-school and primary-school education compared with tertiary education. Conclusion. The COVID-19 pandemic is disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable segments of the population. Social protection programmes are a key component of efforts to alleviate the pandemics consequences; however, equitable access must be ensured.

The text analyzes, in a synthetic way, some of the aspects present in the current migration scenario; it emphasizes the correlation of immigration with the issue of hunger. The setting for the empirical analysis is the city of Pacaraima, on the border with Venezuela, in the state of Roraima. The analysis concludes by demonstrating that the Brazilian government's Operação Acolhida, in conjunction with various entities, is extremely important in alleviating suffering, allowing some hope of a better life in Brazil, as well as solving the pressing and vital problem of hunger for a large part of the thousands of Venezuelan immigrants. HUNGER , *WORLD hunger , *FOOD security , *SELF-interest , *VIOLENCE - Abstract
In a context of high productivity, the situation that millions of people are living in is alarming. One terrifying fact is that hunger in the world causes more deaths than conflicts and terrorism, making it the most significant form of violence. The purpose of this text is to expose the dramatic reality of hunger and provide evidence as to why these alarming figures do not outweigh private interests. The research is based on bibliographic sources and diagnoses the global reality, seeking to propose alternatives. While approximately 9.8% of the world's population suffers from hunger, at least 29% of the global population lives in a state of food insecurity. The problem is structural and rooted in competitive logic and self-interest calculations. Changing this reality requires joint effort and strong determination. The indications of the rationality guiding the prevailing way of life in the current context make the prospects of shortterm change minimal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FOOD shortages , *NUTRITION , *HUNGER , *IDEOLOGY , *HEGEMONY , *BIOLOGY , *ETHNOLOGY - Abstract
Food and alimentation are configured as cultural matters for decades, defined as fertile fields of culture. However, shortage has been narrated in a hegemonic way through the universalist rhetoric of biology and nutrition denying spaces for cultural analysis. This text addresses the genesis of such discourse, offering arguments for a culturalist approach to hunger and food shortages. We argue here for a project that is situated on the slippery slope between nature and culture, but that is equally necessary. Through various ethnographic works, we attempt to show how food shortages are also recreated through deeply cultural practices and ideologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NUTRITION transition , *HEALTH status indicators , *CHILDHOOD obesity , *INCOME , *STANDARD of living , *SOCIAL development , *HUNGER , *NUTRITIONAL status - Abstract
Introduction: The Bolsa Família Program (PBF), which serves about 14 million families in all Brazilian municipalities, was created in 2003 and transformed into law in 2004 by Decree n° 5.209/2004. The initiative has helped to reduce inequality across the country while being overseen at the federal level by the Ministry of Social Development and Fight against Hunger (MDS). The nutritional transition process that the Brazilian population has gone through, in all income brackets, reinforces the need to assess the effects of the BFP on health indicators and on the standard of living of the beneficiary families of the program. Objective: To relate the nutritional status according to sex of children assisted by the Bolsa Família program from 2011 to 2016. Materials and Methods: Field research with a quantitative, exploratory, descriptive approach carried out in the city of Canto do Buriti-PI, with the public target children of both sexes who benefited from the PBF, who entered the program from the year 2011 and who continued until 2016. Data for each child were obtained through BMI for age and BMI percentile. Thus obtaining the classification of nutritional status according to the growth curve table. Results: When analyzing the data of the 41 children evaluated, it was observed that most of them were aged between 7 and 9 years (68%), enrolled in a lower elementary school grade (68%). Just over half of the children (51%) were male and belonged to families with a benefit income of 170 reais (56%). Regarding deviations in the nutritional status of children when they joined the program in 2011, high frequencies of overweight (48%) and obesity (14%) were observed among male children. When comparing the situation in 2016 with the previous one, it was possible to prove a positive evolution at the end of this 5-year period, marked by the reduction in the frequency of overweight to 14% and the disappearance of cases of obesity, a situation still evidenced by the increase in the frequency of eutrophy from 19% to 72% accompanied by a reduction in the frequency of low weight from 19% to 14%. As for female children, the situation found in 2011 consisted of frequencies of overweight of 27%, obesity of 14% and low weight of 19%. In 2016, no cases of obesity were found and the frequency of underweight decreased to 10%, with an increase in the frequencies of normal weight and overweight to, respectively, 57% and 33%. In this way, a favorable evolution was also observed, in which there was a recovery of the nutritional status of the girls who were underweight and the disappearance of obesity cases that progressed to a lower risk condition, that is, overweight. Conclusion: It was observed that both sexes showed an increase in the frequency of eutrophy, characterized by better living conditions, at the conclusion of the study, and that male offspring had the highest rates of overweight and obesity in the year of their birth. FOOD habits , *FOOD waste , *EATING disorders , *FOOD security , *NON-communicable diseases , *HUNGER , *FOOD safety , *SPORTS nutrition - Abstract
The article is an interview with Professor Dr. Roseli Aparecida Claus Bastos Pereira about the Mesa Brasil Project and advances in the field of Nutrition. The Mesa Brasil Project was created by SESC São Paulo to combat hunger and food waste. The professor coordinated the project for 17 years, training drivers and assistants responsible for collecting and delivering food. In addition, the project offers training in good food practices and culinary workshops. In the field of Nutrition, advances include research on non-communicable chronic diseases, sports, functional nutrition, eating disorders, sustainability, and public policies. Food safety in commercial establishments is essential, but often food handlers do not follow good practices. The challenges for nutritionists in the coming decades include staying updated, pursuing postgraduate studies, and working in multidisciplinary teams. The main nutritional challenge in Bauru and Brazil is food insecurity, and the Nutrition Course is mapping the food and nutritional situation of the population in social vulnerability. The Mesa Brasil project and public policies can help address these nutritional challenges. In addition to malnutrition, nutritional challenges also involve overweight and other pathologies, and it is important to promote healthy eating from pregnancy. Public policies and population awareness are essential to reverse these nutritional challenges. [Extracted from the article]

Objectives. To assess the association between childhood hunger experiences and the prevalence of chronic diseases later in life. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted using baseline data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil), a nationally representative study of persons aged 50 years and older (n = 9 412). Univariate and bivariate analyses were used to describe the sample, and multivariate logistic regressions to examine the association between childhood hunger and hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and osteoporosis. Adjusted odds ratios and predicted probabilities were calculated. Results. 24.7% of Brazilians aged 50 and over experienced hunger during childhood. This harmful exposure was significantly more common among non-white people, individuals with lower educational attainment, lower household income and heavy manual laborers. Regional variation was also observed, as the prevalence of individuals reporting childhood hunger was higher in the North and Northeast regions. The multivariate analysis revealed that older adults who reported having experienced hunger during childhood had 20% higher odds of developing diabetes in adulthood (aOR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.02 – 1.41) and 38% higher odds of developing osteoporosis (aOR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.15 – 1.64) than adults who did not experience hunger during childhood, after controlling for covariates. Conclusions. The study showed an association between childhood hunger and two chronic diseases in later life: diabetes and osteoporosis. This work restates that investing in childhood conditions is a cost-effective way to have a healthy society and provides evidence on relationships that deserve further investigation to elucidate underlying mechanisms.

THIS PIECE OUTLINES THE CONTRIBUTION OF MY BOOK, A WORLD WITHOUT HUNGER: JOSUÉ DE CASTO AND THE HISTORY OF GEOGRAPHY, TO TRANSATLANTIC CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THINKING ABOUT SPACE, NATURE, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE. FOCUSSING ON THE FRAGMENTARY AND OPEN-ENDED ARCHIVAL BASES FOR READING JOSUÉ DE CASTRO'S BIOGRAPHY, THIS PAPER INTRODUCES THE CHRONOLOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL STRUCTURE OF THE BOOK, WHICH IS HELD TOGETHER BY THEMATIC CONCERNS THAT EMERGE OUT OF A CONTEXTUAL AND INTERTEXTUAL READING OF THE LIFE AND WORK OF JOSUÉ DE CASTRO. IT BEGINS FROM HIS NUTRITIONAL APPROACH TO THE GEOGRAPHY OF HUNGER TO INTERPRET HIS LIFE AND WORK AS A CRITICAL GEOGRAPHY IN THEORY AND PRACTICE, FOLLOWING CASTRO FROM HIS PLACE IN A FRENCH INFLUENCED BRAZILIAN TRADITION, THROUGH TO PUTTING GEOGRAPHY INTO LESS FAMILIAR SITES AT THE UN AND THE FAO, AND IN THE RADICAL REGIONALISM OF THE BRAZILIAN NORTHEAST, UNTIL CASTRO'S LAST YEARS IN THE PROTO-REVOLUTIONARY ACADEMIC CONTEXT OF THE PARISIAN 1960S. - Abstract

- Abstract
This essay explores the convergences and singularities of popular education and Food and Nutrition Education based on biographical fragments of the undergraduate training program in Nutrition of three university professors who established their academic and professional trajectories at these crossroads of knowledge and actions mediated by popular education. Inspired by the autobiographical method, the narratives revealed that the initial indignations with social inequalities were mobilizing the routes in the formative path toward understanding hunger, suffering, and human care. To this end, seeking spaces and opportunities to learn about and experience social work in contexts of vulnerabilities was a decisive factor in their personal and professional constructions, revealing the contradictions of traditional training models and the starting point for the genesis of critical thinking. Thus, clues are offered to understand the interfaces of Popular Education (PE) and Food and Nutrition Education (FNE) in the converging actions around the fight against hunger and the right to food without, however, reducing one to the other when food and Nutrition are projected on the horizon of practices.

INTERNET access , *TELECOMMUNICATION , *LABOR market , *SEMI-structured interviews , *SOCIAL policy , *FOOD security , *OCCUPATIONAL segregation - Abstract
Taking the Matadouro Housing Complex as the research context, popularly known as Portelinha, located in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes, this article presents the results of surveys carried out with residents in order to understand the impact of Covid-19. We wonder about cases of contamination; whether they existed how they were treated and how the drop in formal and informal jobs affected this population. As a data collection methodology, we conducted semi-structured interviews mediated by the use of communication technology, observation incursions and face-to-face interviews, mainly with people who did not have access to the internet. In this sense, we could conclude that the form of urban segregation experienced by the residents contributed to a low number of contamination, greater dependence on social assistance policies and difficulties in entering the formal and informal labor market. One of the lateral findings of our research corroborates the situation of food insecurity experienced in Brazil since the beginning of the pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This manuscript aimed to develop a brief 2-item screening tool to identify Brazilian households that include families with children at risk for food insecurity. Psychometric analyses including sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value, accuracy, and ROC curves were used to test combinations of questions to determine the most effective screener to assess households at risk for food insecurity when compared to a gold standard scale. Participants included Brazilian National Survey of Demography and Health on Women and Children (PNDS) surveyed households with a valid Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA) response. The sample included 3,920 households representing 11,779,686 households when expanded using PNDS sample weights. With overall prevalence of food insecurity at 21%, a Brazilian 2-item food-insecurity screen showed sensitivity of 79.31%, specificity of 92.95%, positive predictive value of 74.62%, negative predictive value of 94.5% and ROC area 86.13%. This screen also presented high convergent validity for children’s nutrition and health variables when compared with the gold standard, the EBIA full scale. Based on its ability to detect households at risk for food insecurity, a 2-item screening tool is recommended for widespread adoption as a screening measure throughout Brazil, especially when rapid decision-making has been made fundamental, as under the COVID-19 pandemic. This screener can enable providers to accurately identify families at risk for food insecurity and promptly intervene to prevent or ameliorate adverse health and developmental consequences associated with food insecurity and swiftly respond to crises.

RISK of violence , *UNIVERSITY hospitals , *INDIGENOUS peoples , *COMMUNICABLE diseases , *HOSPITAL patients , *HUNGER , *MALNUTRITION - Abstract
Nowadays, in Brazil, there is little systematic production about the value of the ethnoracial dimension on the differentiated expression of the grievance to health. On daily bases, the minority lives in a situation of exclusion, marginality and discrimination that put them in a greater vulnerability position regarding the grievance to health. This research seeks to understand the situation of the indigenous people domiciled in the Dourados' Indigenous Reserve in MS, according to the UFGD University Hospital data, where the rates of morbidity and mortality are higher than the registered at national level; hunger and malnutrition, occupational risks and social violence are just some of the multiple reflexes about health inherent continuation of the inequality. The research was held inside the University Hospital of Dourados with the hospitalized indigenous patients and/or their companions, through a semi-structured questionnaire which objective was to understand the spatial relation with the health-disease process of them. The results of the research revealed that all of the indigenous patients presented pathologies that were related with their spatial and that the infectious and social diseases still prevail with high indices, in contraposition to the national and local epidemiological data, proving the different forms of iniquity that the indigenous population's health is submitted. BINGE-eating disorder , *COMPULSIVE eating , *TIME pressure , *SOCIAL networks , *NUTRITION , *HUNGER , *FOOD habits , *ANXIETY - Abstract
Eating behavior is linked to psychological aspects, in the field of nutrition it is analyzed with the aim of observing and identifying eating habits and behaviors of individuals regarding food. Anxiety and stress are some triggers for binge eating. The aim of this study was to evaluate eating behavior and the presence of binge eating disorder (CAP) in overweight women using social networks. This is a prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study with qualitative and quantitative analysis. The research was carried out with 36 adult women, in which 1 was excluded from the study for not being overweight, who use and participate in groups related to diets and healthy eating in the social networks. For data collection, a semi-structured questionnaire was used to assess eating habits and the Periodic Eating Compulsion Scale (ECAP). 75.7% of participants reported eating during times of stress and annoyance, with 64.9% having a preference for sweets at those times. According to the score obtained at ECAP, 45.7% (n=16) women had binge eating. It was concluded that at times caused by stress and anxiety most women tend to increase the amount of food eaten, often eating even without hunger, as a way to supply this feeling, preferring foods that consist of high caloric value, such as sweets. Latin America is known to be the most unequal region on the planet. To face reality, one of the key issues is to promote collaboration in the region, which allow innovation and knowledge to be fundamental instruments to eradicate poverty, combat hunger and improve health, as well as to achieve a sustainable, integrated, inclusive and equitable development of the region. This article presents some initiatives in the Latin American field in the 2010-2020 period, at the intersection between Computing and Education, which have emerged as collaborative networks to promote education supported by Information and Communication Technologies. In that sense, research challenges in the field of Educational Informatics are raised and the perspectives for new possible collaborations are outlined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AGRICULTURAL productivity , *COVID-19 pandemic , *SOCIAL & economic rights , *FAMILY farms , *PRODUCTION increases , *PROCESSED foods , *FOOD prices - Abstract
Brazil has favored agribusiness instead of family farming. In the agribusiness production networks, food is nottreated as a social right, but rather as a commodity whose primary purpose is to obtain profit. This paper aims to contribute to the debate on the intrinsic relationship between agribusiness expansion and hunger in Brazil. Our starting point are some of the pillars that support food as a commodity, like ultra-processed food and economic concentration in its production and distribution. The methodology was structured according to the basic principles of qualitative research for the construction of a critical analysis. We conclude that in addition to the increase in production and productivity of agribusiness, we have the growth of people without access to food, showing that these processes are sides of the same coin. We also note that although hunger increased exponentially during the COVID-19 pandemic, agri-food businesses and supermarkets were among the most profitable during this period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
