PORTUGUESE language , *SCIENTIFIC language , *LINGUISTICS , *AMERICAN English language , *POLICY sciences , *PROXIMITY spaces - Abstract
Can the Portuguese language be considered a language of science? Whether in the past or in the present, scientific policies promoted in Portugal by official bodies, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, on the one hand, and the Foundation for Science and Technology, on the other, never considered it as such. For these instances, only English is the language of science. And the partners for internationalization are preferably from American and English institutions, or else from research networks outside the "proximity geolinguistic space", that is to say, in the Anglo-Saxon space. In my view, however, a prospective and fruitful idea of Lusophony must have Portuguese, in all its varieties, as a language of science as its foundation. And this is the started point of the study presented here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MOVEMENT education , *SCIENTIFIC language , *NATURAL languages , *CONFESSION (Christianity) , *LINGUISTICS - Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the effect of Protestant religion on academic performance. To this end, it was considered the precedent of Max Weber and the literature that points out the importance of education in the movement led by Martin Luther. Thus, it was decided to work with the comparison between the Protestant and Catholic confessions. In order to achieve the proposed objective, microdata from the 2009 edition of the National High School Exam (Enem) were used. The empirical strategy followed a quasi-experimental approach, using the estimator of ordinary least squares weighted by weights generated with the entropy balancing technique. The results found indicate that Protestant or evangelical candidates performed better in the tests of human sciences; natural sciences; languages and writing. On the other hand, Catholics performed better in the math test, thus corroborating other studies conducted to Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DISCUSSION in education , *SCIENTIFIC language , *LINGUISTICS , *EQUALITY , *LIBERTY - Abstract
Discussions related to the deprivation of liberty deserve attention, since the humanities and language sciences occupy a prominent place by emphasizing the place of the subject at the center of society. The purpose of this text is to understand how education in prisons in Acre contributes to a desirable citizenship perspective. As a theoretical foundation, we use Foucault (1979, 1987), Zilberman and Lajolo (2011) with the concept of reading, and Petit (2010) and Goffman (2004) with discussions about education and reading in crisis spaces, in addition to other authors who deal with these themes. As it is a bibliographical study, we are based on news published on Acrean virtual sites, exclusively, Agazeta.net, to investigate how reading is understood in a context of deprivation of liberty. The results indicate that education and reading can contribute to the formation of the subject in the future search for a desirable citizenship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HUMAN geography , *SCIENTIFIC language , *GEOGRAPHY , *SOCIAL conflict , *HERMENEUTICS , *LANGUAGE & languages , *GAMES , *CHESS - Abstract
To understand socio-spatial gamegraphy, a link was woven between poetic language and scientific language. Thus, the hermeneutics of the game configures a notch for Chess and Space. In doing so, it meets the Miltonian phenomenology of space, which corresponds to the gamegraphy through four dialectics: form and structure (spatial), function and process (temporal), and two that cross space-time, between form and function and structure and process--constituting a de-re-totalization through dialectical process and form. Thus, chess is situated in its archetypes of social representation: the pieces (the movement of materiality), the players (the classes close to the issue), the spectators (intellectuals and/or revolutionaries) and the referee (capitalism). However, another game is possible: consciousness, which is time, can modify the gamegraphy by functions and processes, reformulating the content of the game and transforming it. In reference to the socio-spatial totality, another game is projected that can oust inequality in this chess class struggle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present paper we focus on the comparison between medical language present in the narrative of some Italian writers: Antonio Tabucchi, Umberto Eco, Oriana Fallaci, Elena Ferrante, Dino Buzzati and fragments of medical reports that deal with the respective medical problems observed in the analysed novels/short stories: Il tempo invecchia in fretta, La misteriosa fiamma della regina Loana, Il cappello pieno di ciliege, La storia del nuovo cognome, Sette piani. With the comparative analysis of stylistically distant passages, we intend to indicate common points in the use of the Italian medical language both in the scientific and literary fields, as well as identify divergent linguistic aspects in the representations of this reality. We also intend to demonstrate the need to understand various narrative modes at different levels of specialized language. Despite different narrative modes, the essence of the phenomenon itself is not lost. There is also a common space in which meet various representations of the subjective truth that exists regardless of the language.

This retrospective paper aimed to redraw a general landscape of dissertations and theses produced in Brazil centered on the theme Portuguese as a Host Language. This work focuses on the most recent times of scientific production in the last years. The studies were mapped through the Theses and Dissertations Catalog of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel. From the total of suggestion studies, 15 dissertations and 4 theses were identified. In order to carry out this State of the Art, we started with six guiding questions, such as: a) How is the academic production distributed considering the institution of origin, region of the country, academic degree and funding? b) What objects have been investigated? c) What works are frequently cited? d) How are the methodological paths outlined? e) What recommendations can be made for future research? Based on what has been accumulated and analyzed, we highlight some challenges for the field of Portuguese as a Host Language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article is a review of the book "Dicionário de ciência da religião" (Dictionary of Religious Science), released in 2020 and organized by Frank Usarski, Alfredo Teixeira, and João Décio Passos. The book is the first technical dictionary of religious science in the Portuguese language and covers the Brazilian and Lusophone reality. However, the review points out some weaknesses, such as the authors' centralization at PUC-SP (Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo) and the lack of entries on important personalities in the field of religious science. Despite this, the work is considered essential for those who wish to conduct scientific research on religions in Portuguese-speaking countries. [Extracted from the article]

Eponyms are linguistic phenomena present in scientific language in various fields of science. Aiming to contribute to new themes and objects of study in the field of Information Science, this article addresses theoretical and methodological aspects of eponymy in science and the relationship between eponyms and the analysis of citations in scientific texts. The methodology of critical review of the Sociology of Science and Information Science literature was adopted, through the analysis of classics from the literature of these two areas and of other studies on eponymy through data collection in the Portal de Periódicos Capes. The results pointed out the origin, function and limitations of eponyms in scientific texts, the controversies about their use in medical-scientific communication, the female underrepresentation in eponyms of various sciences, the relationship between eponyms and citations, and the occurrence of obliteration. by incorporation into eponymic texts. It was concluded that the study of eponyms contributes to broadening the understanding of scientific recognition in science, but that its presence in scientific texts is challenging for bibliometric studies due to the occurrence of the phenomenon of obliteration by incorporation and the difficulties related to its identification and extraction in scientific databases. PLANT-soil relationships , *SOIL science , *MINE soils , *SCIENTIFIC language , *EARTH sciences - Abstract
With the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic and the impossibility to carry out the extension projects Earth Science Workshop (Oficina da Ciência da Terra) and Truck with Science (Caminhão com Ciência), the Soil Tutorial Education Program (PET Soils) from State University of Santa Cruz (UESC, Brazil), resorted to production, divulgation, and availability of didactic materials to spread the Soil Science. Five graduation students in Agronomy (scholarship holders from PET Soils) and a university professor (tutor of the group), in weekly meetings, defined the topics, content, and the way of scientific language transposition used on the extension actions of the group. Were outlined two booklets ("O Universo abaixo dos nossos pés" - The Universe below our feet, and "O solo e as plantas: uma íntima relação" - The soil and the plants: an intimate relationship) and three education games ("Jogo da memória" - Memory game, "Passe e repasse" - Pass and repass, and "Que solo sou eu" - What soil am I). The visual production was developed on Canva -visual and audiovisual software development- and the illustrations on Paint Tool SAI software. The didactic material produced was spread on Instagram, Youtube (PET Solos UESC, Brazil) and available for download. Until the day 2021, October 20th, the divulgation registered 675 and 239 visualizations on Instagram and Youtube, respectively. The didactic materials were applied on workshops, monitories, and classes of Pedology on UESC, reaching 310 assisted students until the date above. In this sense, its coverage and reach have been promoting expanding the knowledge about soil and represent an effective contribution to soil education in a pandemic scene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an analysis of the infl uence of theories and methods of the science of language of the second half of the twentieth century in Portuguese language textbooks for basic education. The analytical perspective is that of the historiography of linguistics, with emphasis on the concept of layers, which locates the texts in a social and historical context while analyzing their internal contents (what the authors present as teaching content). The material of analysis is composed of three textbooks produced for use in Brazil in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s. In this period, linguistics was the main guideline to defi ne the directions of language teaching materialized in the textbooks, understood in its pedagogical and social function. POLITICAL science , *RADICALISM , *SCIENTIFIC communication , *POLITICAL sociology , *SCIENTIFIC language , *CONSPIRACY theories - Abstract
This article explores how contemporary media culture reflects some of the socio-cultural and sociopolitical changes that occur in the context of the pandemic. On the one hand, the intention is to analyse the constant presence of some representatives of scientific culture within the info-communicational scenario, on the other hand, the upsurge of ideological extremism and conspiracy narratives is observed. Exploring a set of case studies, we intend to reflect on the cultural and political implications challenged by these two opposing dimensions present in the media landscape. The introduction of the scientific approach and language in the media agenda, in a scenario of a health emergency, is seen as a promise of a more humanized science, whose aim is to bring together experts and laypeople. However, at the same time, the risks arising from a possible politicization of scientific discourses are highlighted. The ideological violence that supports the infodemia is, in turn, analysed as something that should not be thought of only as a problem of ignorance or illiteracy (generating fake knowledge), but as a form of revolt oriented towards social destabilization, the refutation of rules of the democratic game and traditional legal-political formulas. The urgent problem is not the presence of conspiracy theories, but the will to believe them and make them the object of hate campaigns. In this sense, communication sciences are challenged to collaborate in a more integrated way with political science and the sociology of science. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SIGN language , *DISCOURSE analysis , *LANGUAGE policy , *SCIENTIFIC language , *CONCEPTUAL history - Abstract
Considered from the point of view of the theoretical and methodological articulation of Discourse Analysis and the History of Linguistic Ideas, this article focuses on discussing the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) as a language of scientific dissemination. This discussion includes a political position including Libras in action in the process that translates/interprets/circulates produced knowledge. For that purpose, it takes as its object of discussion a virtual encyclopedia that aims to place the knowledge produced by Discourse Analysis as video-recordings spoken in Brazilian Portuguese and interpreted in sign language. The need (more than that, the historical injunction) and the difficulty of thinking about building a sign-dictionary in Libras is the same for any chosen theoretical domain, considering the history of its concepts. Furthermore, this is a political issue, an issue involving language policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a study on the dialogue between the ideas and the aesthetics of Augusto dos Anjos. What is meant to be postulated is that the Paraiba's poet puts his vigorous aesthetic to the service of ideas that were expurgated from the literary and academic scene under the label of vitalism, in favor of the hegemony of mechanism. Aesthetic images, the use of a nearly completely denotative scientific language, and morbidity, as paroxysms of this aesthetic project are not really an isolated initiative of the poet, but not even his contemporaries understood the greatness of his project and how it was necessary, to accomplish it, that he raises his poetics to an unusual aesthetic level. Augusto dos Anjos, even on the fringes of the elitist epicenter of Ouvidor Street (where his accent and his color would have no place), succeeded in constructing a true poetics of denotation that became one of the most radical bulwarks of a literature that, by yours hands, entered modernity. The debate on scientific policies and how to counter the hegemony of the Anglo-Saxon publication model - which erases differences and perpetuates scientific, linguistic and cultural supremacy - is strategically important. Thus, the definition of editorial policies that take a stand in fighting the impoverishment of language is determinant. However, do such policies exist? We know that open access is not necessarily synonymous with universal access, for it does not remove barriers such as language barriers. Bearing in mind, we look at the Portuguese open access journals in Communication and Information Sciences to learn about their scientific policies, how they manage to fit in the international community and respond to the challenge of creating a multifaceted community. Among the 19 journals, there is a progressive tendency towards hybrid language publications, and, overall, there is no policy for Portuguese as a language of science. As a consequence, the publications are vulnerable to the expressive power of other languages, especially English. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PUBLIC school teachers , *BIOLOGY teachers , *SCIENTIFIC language , *SCIENCE education , *CURRICULUM - Abstract
This research aimed to investigate the conceptions of teachers about the didactic-pedagogical objectives of biology teaching. The methodology was developed from a qualitative approach based on the phenomenological method, using theoretical saturation for sample closure. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with biology teachers from public schools in the city of João Pessoa (PB), investigating the view of teachers on the objectives of teaching Biology. The results point out that the teachers project the contextualization of the contents with aspects of the students' daily life is the central objective of the reports, being a theme that appeared in the interview of all the teachers interviewed. Teachers also defended teaching for university entrance exam preparation (teaching for testing); the developing an understanding of how nature works; understanding of scientific language; of notions about the processes that involve the scientific method; and the importance of contextualizing the contents of Biology with that of other school subjects. In general, it was possible to conclude that the teachers conceptions point to a commitment to the students' scientific and citizen education, but the objectives for the preparation of the entrance exam can cause a distortion between the objectives of the teaching of Biology and the commitments to the social and critical formation of the students. In the present day, the themes of reading and the production of written texts are propelling elements of a wide range of academic discussions in the context of Educational Sciences and Language Sciences. These discussions continually come highlighting the relevance of reading and writing skills in everyday routines. This work aims to reflect on the application of a didactic sequence focused on the production of multimodal genres, most specifically the community campaign announcement genre. As a result, we made some reflections alluding to the relevance of working with multimodal genres in order to promote the perspective of literacy and multilessons. The results show that students' productions materialize several constitutive characteristics of the community campaign announcement genre, as well as materialize the intertwining of different semiotic resources, which triggers the perspective of discursive multimodality. In terms of final considerations, we highlight the relevance of the use of didactic sequences in the realization of didactic situations that involve not only the discursive genres and their constitutive characteristics, as well as other content. In this sense, it is very important to bring multimodal genres to educational routines, promoting contact of these subjects in different semiotic ways through a previously planned, systematic and sequential didactic work. PUBLIC universities & colleges , *SCIENTIFIC language , *TEACHERS , *SEMI-structured interviews , *ENGLISH language - Abstract
The teaching of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) has been intensified due to the internationalization of Brazilian universities, the role of English as a language of scientific dissemination and the provision of English courses for the university community through the Languages without Borders Program (LwB). Thus, it becomes relevant to investigate the teacher education for this specific aim. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the challenges faced by LwB teachers in preparing and conducting classes focusing on academic English. This work uses qualitative interpretive research as methodology (Mason, 2002; Erickson, 1990) for the analysis of 11 semi-structured interviews with LwB teachers from a Brazilian public university. The results suggest that the main challenges are to make EAP lessons more dynamic, to create and adapt classroom materials and to meet the needs of students from different fields of knowledge. Claude Bernard’s use of the metaphor of the “living machine” in his writings may seem surprising, since the theorist of experimental medicine is usually known for his disciplined stylistic and scientific rigor. An examination of the different occurrences of the word “machine” in a representative corpus of ClaudeBernard’s writings shows that this phrase, which has a long history, allows for the identification of different scientific degrees in the physiologist’s work. This metaphor, which is also a thought pattern, emerges with the Introduction to the Study of experimental Medicine in 1865; its use indicates that some texts or textual zones are less scientific than they are philosophical or generalist.

Evolution is a key-concept for teaching biological sciences because it joins different branches from biological sciences within an idea of historical relationships between organism and their attributes by natural causes. However, it has been neglected in classrooms for several reasons. One of them is the lack of training of high-school teachers in the Philosophy of Science. As a result, in these "liquid times", students have enter universities demonstrating reluctance regarding comprehension and assimilation to scientific concepts, since they do not distinguish sciences of rival ways of knowing. Nowadays, different ways of knowing are accessible for all people, mainly by internet web. However, those more reliable became restricted and modular. In this gap pseudosciences have invade and occupying place between science and religion, using scientific language, but immunizing contrary evidences, banishing external validation, investing on negative evidences, and applying ad hoc hypotheses. In this way, pseudosciences stand up as linking between sciences and religion, using scientific discourse, but immunizing contrary evidences, constraining external validation and investing in negative evidences and hypotheses ad hoc. Against this approach, sciences offer rigorous analytical methods in which criticism and skepticism are used on the evaluation of facts and claims. In societies whose social disfunction is clear and sharp, objective reality trends to be change by nonsense, favoring dissemination of all forms of non-rational arguments. In this, concepts from philosophy of science and tools of scientific methodology are useful in the evaluation of ideas in those societies committed with the freedom of thinking and expression. These tools are essential for understanding and to evaluate applications and implications of the theory of Evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

APPLIED linguistics , *SCIENTIFIC language , *CULTURAL history , *TWENTIETH century , *LINGUISTICS , *ANCIENT history - Abstract
The history of linguistics documents that the interest in the intricacies of language comes from ancient times, coinciding with the history of civilization itself, since even in classical antiquity, reflections on language, its structure, its functioning, its uses are reporded. Much later, at the beginning of the last century, the study of language became recognized as scientific; language has become the target of a well-defined science with its own method and object: Linguistics. Further, Applied Linguistics emerges as a new look, initially geared towards teaching, to then break through any kind of barrier that dared to limit its field of action. In Brazil, the creation of postgraduate programs in the second half of the twentieth century fostered interest in Applied Linguistics research and grounded its area in fertile and solid, but not stagnant, terrain. Therefore, this article, an alleged essay, essentially aims to: i) present a general retrospective that historically locates Applied Linguistics in the field of language studies, ii) take a photograph of this area in the Brazilian postgraduate system with the purpose of situating it in contemporaneity and, then, iii) glimpse the new, multidimensional horizons that unfold in front of a linguistic that goes far beyond description, beyond teaching and beyond itself. // This work studies the use of collocations formed by the verbs make, take and do followed by a noun in nineteenth century English in texts written by English-speaking women, born and grown up in North America and the United Kingdom. The aim of this study is to compare two different genres, fiction and science. We have focused our attention only on texts written by women because this parameter, sex, has shown interesting results in previous studies. We have limited this study to the search on these three verbs because they are the most widely used. Our aim is to use a variety of extralinguistic parameters to study their influence on the use of collocations in the period under survey, or if they can be considered somehow relevant. The parameters applied will be: genre (fiction and science), time-span (from 1800 to 1900), origin of the authoresses (England, Ireland and United States), age of the author when the work was published, and text-types they represent (letters, essay, treatise, text-book). To obtain our data two different corpora will be used: a fiction corpus, that includes novels written by women and a scientific corpus (the Coruña Corpus (CC)). From the CC we have selected only works written by women that belong to the field Natural sciences. Within this field, the works belong to the Life Sciences and Astronomy sections.

This paper aimed to identify how students of Science and Biology licenciate's program, from a public university of Paraná, understand the terms related to the metascientific language, such as laws, theories, and hypotheses. For data collection, descriptive surveys and semi-structured interviews have been used, and the data were submitted to Discursive Text Analysis. The results demonstrated that the students apprehend the elements of metascientific language mistakenly. In general, mistakes between the terms theory and hypothesis had been perceived, as well as in the meanings related to the term law, in addition to a tendency to attribute gradations between the concepts of theory and law. Thus, it is understood that it is necessary to insert discussions about metascientific language in the process of training science teachers, thus avoiding that these misconceptions are consolidated among these professionals and consequently extend to basic education students.

The textbook is still the most present resource in the classroom despite the existence of innumerable didactic materials, it strongly influences students in the conception and construction of scientific knowledge. For the teaching of Chemistry, its use becomes essential for the exposition of chemical knowledge, and from it the student starts his contact with the scientific culture, its representation and language, so the study of this didactic material is very pertinent for understanding the process teaching and learning. Therefore, this research made use of the qualitative methodological perspective (LUDKE; ANDRE, 2012). With regard to the analytical typology used, it was decided to document analysis, since the object of analytical interest consisted of a chemistry set of books adopted in a public school sampling that offer high school located in the city of São Luís, Maranhão. The data analysis was carried out using the content analysis technique, guided by the studies of Bardin (1978) and Franco (2008), adopting categories based on the theory of Johnstone (1982; 1993) that deal with levels of knowledge representation chemical (Macroscopic, Submicroscopic and Symbolic) and reflecting on the contribution of images categorized according to references of social representation such as Moscovici (1981) for the appropriation of scientific language. Thus, nine Chemistry textbooks were analyzed and seven hundred and thirteen images from chapters dealing with MA were cataloged. First, a pre-analysis was carried out to characterize the study variables in reference to the type of illustrations: (i) photograph, (ii) figure, (iii) graph, (iv) diagram and (v) table. Then an exploratory study of the images separating them into illustrations of the indirect tract (comic strip and special sections dealing with the History of Chemistry and Science) and illustrations of the direct tract (images that represent objects and chemical phenomena). The direct treatment illustrations were categorized according to the levels of representation portrayed by the model developed by Johnstone (1982; 1993) and then treated from the perspective of the Theory of Social Representation. The results showed a large number of figure-type illustrations (48%). On the other hand, there was a marked deficit in relation to the insertion of graphic illustrations (1,5%). The categorization of the illustrations of the direct tract indicated that the Macroscopic and Submicroscopic categories presented the amounts of 24.2% and 24.4%, respectively. In general, it can be said that in the analyzed CTB a representational aspect prevails, that is, symbolic (28.1%) in their illustrations, which means that the emphasis given to the construction of chemical knowledge is directed towards the use of formulas , equations and reaction mechanism, which can make it difficult for the student to appropriate the body of knowledge about science objects and their representations.

The present paper contemplates a study about the practice of reading in chemistry teaching. It is started from the presupposition that reading in chemistry teaching allows the student a greater contact with the specific language of this science and thus qualifies their learning. With the objective of visualize how this practice has been executed in the chemistry teaching and to understand the purposes of its use, a bibliographic review was carried out in the last years of the annals of the National Meeting of Teaching of Chemistry and of the annals of National Meeting of Research in Education in Sciences. We also looked at the publications of New Chemistry Magazine at School. It analysis the methodological option consisted in discursive textual analysis with levels of elaboration emergent categories: discursive genres, discursive interactions and reading strategies. The results built the importance of reading practice in the process of learning Chemistry pointing it as a way of providing appropriation and conceptual meaning in chemistry and the formation of a more critical and participatory students.
