Abstract

The history of linguistics documents that the interest in the intricacies of language comes from ancient times, coinciding with the history of civilization itself, since even in classical antiquity, reflections on language, its structure, its functioning, its uses are reporded. Much later, at the beginning of the last century, the study of language became recognized as scientific; language has become the target of a well-defined science with its own method and object: Linguistics. Further, Applied Linguistics emerges as a new look, initially geared towards teaching, to then break through any kind of barrier that dared to limit its field of action. In Brazil, the creation of postgraduate programs in the second half of the twentieth century fostered interest in Applied Linguistics research and grounded its area in fertile and solid, but not stagnant, terrain. Therefore, this article, an alleged essay, essentially aims to: i) present a general retrospective that historically locates Applied Linguistics in the field of language studies, ii) take a photograph of this area in the Brazilian postgraduate system with the purpose of situating it in contemporaneity and, then, iii) glimpse the new, multidimensional horizons that unfold in front of a linguistic that goes far beyond description, beyond teaching and beyond itself.
