This essay aims to present, analyse and problematise the way in which Latin American intellectuals, linked to critical social theories, explain the role and meanings of the football spectacle in capitalist societies. To this end, it has been organised into three parts. In the first part, I analysed the moral condemnation of football, showing that some authors see this sport as an essentially alienated activity and others only condemn its spectacularisation, proposing that it be reformed. In the second part, I analysed the (supposed) ideological functions of football, problematising the arguments that this sport necessarily legitimizes capitalism, conceals its contradictions, unifies the oppressed and the pressured, fragments the working class and reifies social relations. In the third part, I discuss the (supposed) authoritarian personality of the football fan, focusing on the political-ideological implications of this idea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aims to determine the mediating effect that authentic coach leadership has on the interaction between coach competence and athletes' perceived support for basic psychological needs (BPN). A cross-sectional study was conducted with 115 team sports players (17.96 ±2.85 years of age; 8.18 ±4.67 years of experience) using the Basic Psychological Needs Support, Perceived Authentic Leadership, and Athletes' Perceptions of Coach Competence questionnaires. Correlation and mediation analyses (Coach Competence → Authentic Leadership → BPN Support) were performed. The results show a positive and significant indirect effect (ƥ = 0.288; 95% CI = 0.167, 0.415) of authentic leadership on the direct interaction between coach competence and BPN support (ƥ = 0.277; p < 0.01), increasing the total model effect (ƥ = 0.555; p < 0.01) to aid athletes' perceived BPN support when their coaches are competent and authentic leaders. In conclusion, it is not enough to be a well-prepared coach, he/she must also have the ability to lead, motivate and make decisions taking care of his/her interrelationships with athletes and promoting the satisfaction of basic psychological needs.

To evaluate the effects of a 12-week injury prevention program on the isokinetic performance of knee extensor and flexor muscles and postural control in young indoor soccer athletes. Twelve athletes (23.14 ± 4.37 years) were included and assessed before and after the intervention. Muscle strength was assessed using the isokinetic dynamometer (Biodex System Pro 4), and postural control was assessed using posturography dynamics (EquiTest® System) and sensory organization tests (TOS). This parameter was divided into six conditions that analyzed systems responsible for maintaining balance (visual, vestibular, and somatosensory). The isokinetic performance improved after the intervention, especially in peak torque and thallus flexors power, as well as postural control (TOS) in conditions III and VI. Thus, the improvement observed in these parameters after intervention may reduce the risk of lesions in indoor soccer athletes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the incidence and characteristics of injuries that occurred in the 2020 season of the Paulista Football Championship during the novel coronavirus disease pandemic. Methods: We conducted a prospective study using an electronic questionnaire developed by the Medical Committee of the Paulista Football Federation. Results were sent to the team doctors of series A1 and A2 after each round of the Paulista Football Championship. Results: Series A1 and A2 presented 12.17 and 15.6 injuries, respectively, per 1000 gaming hours. The strikers were the most affected, with muscle injuries being the most frequent and the lower limbs being the most affected. Most injuries occurred within 31-45 minutes of playing; only 4.5% of injuries required surgery. Conclusion: There was no statistical difference in the comparison between pre- and post-pandemic conditions. In relation to the variables studied, the most injuries occurred in the lower limbs; the most common type of injury was muscle strain, followed by sprain and contusion. The most requested exam was MRI; most injuries were classified as moderate (8-28 days). There was no difference between pre- and post-pandemic conditions. Level of Evidence IV, Case Series.

Female football has seen a large increase in popularity worldwide, which resulted in an expansion of well-organized leagues in various countries. The best leagues are gradually becoming more popular, mostly due to the talent that every team has, leading to a more competitive scenario. The Portuguese Liga BPI is approaching full professionalisation, yet there still seems to be a great disparity in terms of team quality in the league, with one specific team winning for the past three years with a high number of goal difference. In light of this situation, this study explored the differences in goal chances and goals scored between the Liga BPI and five of the most competitive leagues in the world during the 2022/2023 season. The means of goal chances (GC) and successful goal chances (S-GC), per game, from the Portuguese Liga BPI, United States of America National Soccer Women´s League (NWSL), English FA Super League, French D1 Féminine, German Frauen-Bundesliga and Spanish Liga F were collected from the Instat platform and subsequently analysed. For the comparisons among leagues, the data from the 2022/2023 season (in the case of the NWSL, 2022 season) games were interpreted using descriptive statistics. The Mann-Whitney U Test was used to compare the GC and S-GC variables between the Liga BPI and the other leagues. Results demonstrated that the Liga BPI had the highest GC (μ=6.02) and S-GC (μ=1.76) of all the leagues, having one outlier with the highest S-GC score of all analysed teams (n=4.50). Additionally, the standard deviation (SD) for both variables was also superior in the Portuguese league (SD(GC)=3.36 and SD(S-GC)=1.18). Furthermore, the Mann-Whitney U Test exhibited no statistically significant difference (p≥0.05) for both variables. Following the assessment of the goal chances and efficiency of these leagues, it was revealed that there is no considerable distinction between them. However, if the leagues are observed separately, the Portuguese league has a bigger disparity between teams concerning goal chances and successful goal chances than any other mentioned league, having one specific team leading with a significant difference. This implies that the Liga BPI has a great distinction between the league team´s capacity to create goal chances and score. In conclusion, these results provide valuable insight into how unbalanced the Liga BPI is regarding scoring opportunities and efficiency, thus making the Portuguese league less competitive.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the communication/training strategies and technological tools used by fitness coaches from Brazilian football teams during home-based training according to age categories (professional and youth), competitive level (1st, 2nd and 3rd/4th divisions) and sex (male and female). An online questionnaire was applied to collect data. Eighty-two fitness coaches from sixty-seven male and female football teams (professional and youth teams) answered the questionnaire. Message apps were the main communication route between fitness coaches and players during home-based training. Online spreadsheets were frequently used to control the training. Regarding equipment provided to players for training, 70.7% of male professional players used some equipment. In contrast, most female professional and youth players (both sexes) did not receive any equipment, respectively (p

The paper analyses the case of Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah, from Liverpool FC in England, as a successful example of building a transcultural idol within a scenario of the internationalization of football as business. We study his social medias through organic monitoring from 2021 to 2023, to understand how the athlete image would help overcoming cultural barriers. We established five categories (work, success, family, multiculturalism, and commercial legitimacy) around cultural signs, analysing the posts in the light of the concept of hyper-ritualization. We argue that the football player manages to build a multiculturalist image by overcoming national barriers. We argue that he does this by the positive image he builds on his social medias, allowing him transit through different cultural environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article proposes to review the categories through which the study of the relationship between national identities and football was founded in Latin America, especially those of "public arena", inspired by the work of Clifford Geertz, and that of "free zones" of a culture, introduced by the Argentine anthropologist Eduardo Archetti to investigate the foundation of a "popular sporting nationalism" in the early twentieth century. To this end, it examines the ways in which Argentina's recent victory in the Qatar 2022 World Cup was narrated in television accounts and in the experience of fans, as well as the vicissitudes of its (impossible) political capture. Finally, the paper explores the shift from political hero to post-political hero: the narrative games that make the passage from Maradona to Messi possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bolsonarism, in the midst of its rise, hijacked national symbols, especially the yellow shirt of the Brazilian men's football team, which made part of the population reject Canarinho. This article aims to analyze the narrative undertaken by the newspapers O Globo and Folha de S. Paulo during the coverage of the 2022 World Cup to verify whether there was an attempt to dissociate national symbols from the extreme right, which we understand as "dispossession". What were the directions assigned by the vehicles? What do they understand as "dispossession"? The objective of this work is to understand whether there was an attempt to return a national symbol to the Brazilian people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In May 1996, the French channel Paris Première aired two programs recorded by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu about the television medium. The text transcription of these two programs gave rise to the first chapters collected by the author in the work Sur la télévision (Raisons d'Agir Éditions, 1996). Even though we have some somewhat anachronistic ideas to account for the transformations that television has undergone in the last three decades, we believe that certain judgments by the French sociologist still maintain some freshness and relevance to account for the steps taken recently by Brazilian television (both on open channels and cable channels) in relation to the treatment given to football, notably on the occasion of mega sporting events such as the FIFA World Cups. To this end, we propose to apply some of Bourdieu's ideas to national television coverage on the occasion of the Qatar Football World Cup, played from November 20th to December 18th, 2022. What does the incessant return of the Brazilian national team jersey between June 2013 and the government of Jair Bolsonaro mean? What is its role? What does football have to do with Brazil's public life in the early 21st century? Does its intervention in the recent political and social history of the country limit itself to the appearance of the national team jersey and its appropriation by extreme-right movements and parties? These are some of the questions that this article seeks to answer. To do so, the analysis mobilizes the theoretical-methodological framework of Greimas' discursive semiotics and Jurij Lotman's semiotics of culture, combining micro analyses of specific texts, practices, and discourses with macro analyses of broader and transversal sociocultural configurations, revealing the links between the semiospheres of football, politics, media, and religion. The article aims to reflect on the characteristics of European football, marked by high levels of commercialization and spectacularization. These elements can also be deeply rooted in various football practices and rituals. Owing to the resources guaranteed by its media and economic exploitation, the driving rationale behind the organization of elite football prioritizes the maximization of revenue. The recent history of the Champions League serves as a clear example of this trend. Shaped by a strong market orientation, European football has thus ensured a monopolisation of economic and sporting success by the top clubs, exacerbating the inequality, with the less wealthy clubs being left with fewer resources and opportunities to compete. This article analyzes the complex interaction among women, football, and media in Brazil, tracing its evolution since the early 20th century. By the examination of fragments of personal narratives and the active engagements of women in the field, revealing prevalent narratives propagated by male-dominated journalistic spheres and shedding light on overlooked endeavors of Brazilian women in the football arena. Methodologically, archival research, with a notable focus on the Hemeroteca of the National Library, is employed alongside immersive participant observation at Rádio Gaúcha of the Grupo RBS. Despite discernible strides in journalistic coverage of women's football, especially in addressing cases of sexual abuse involving male footballers, and the increased presence of women in editorial spaces, broadcasts, and sports programming, gender parity remains a distant aspiration, underscored by palpable hierarchies and numerical disparities. The challenges faced by teachers in Mathematics teaching are perceptible, with regard to students' interest in the subject and students' understanding of mathematical concepts. The justification for this work is given by the need to think about new possibilities for teaching mathematics, so that there is the development of critical and democratic thinking by the students. The question posed is: will the contextualization of mathematical concepts through soccer using technological resources contribute to a better understanding of the content being taught? The general aim of this article is to develop the construction of knowledge of statistics and percentage content through the lens of Critical Mathematics Education, contextualizing the ongoing challenge of combating racism in soccer. Discussing topics such as the history of Brazilian soccer in parallel with the fight against racism in mathematics classes is of paramount importance so that we can form critical and reflective citizens, thus being able to transform the society in which we live. It is hoped that the activities proposed here will make math teaching more meaningful for students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT The objective of the present review was to analyze the effects of the number of touches on the ball, in the physical and physiological responses during small soccer games. Electronic searches were carried out in the databases: “Web of Science”, “Scopus” and “PubMed”, using the descriptors “Small-sided games”; “Intensity”; “Touches”; “Soccer”; “Soccer players”; “Modified rules”. The PICO strategy was used and the group of words was combined in pairs or trios, using the OR and AND connectors. Only articles published between 2010 and 2022 were considered. The following were excluded: (a) annals and supplements of scientific events, (b) reviews, editorial and instrument validation articles, and (c) studies with women. Of 578 studies, 9 were selected and analyzed. In general, the adoption of the limit rule for touching the ball increased the physiological responses, although discrepancies were observed between the studies regarding the physical responses, we must consider the methodological differences between the studies. We conclude that manipulating the number of touches allowed per ball possession influences players’ physiological responses. Specifically, higher intensity is expected in SSGs with fewer ball touches allowed. On the other hand, physical responses are not influenced by this rule.

In football, knee and hip muscle strength assessment have been recommended for injury prevention (Mosler et al., 2017; Namazi et al., 2019). Additionally, bilateral strength differences in the knee and hip joints have been related to an increased risk of injury. The aims of this study were threefold: (1) to compare knee and hip muscle strength performance between professional players competing at different levels; (2) to assess bilateral strength differences according to the preferred leg (PL) and the non-preferred leg (NPL); and (3) to compare knee and hip muscle strength performance in two-time moments of the season. This study considered 33 professional football players: 13 were in the elite group (EG) competing in the First Portuguese Football League, and 20 were in the sub-elite group (SEG) competing in the Fourth Portuguese Football League. Participants were assessed for body composition, isokinetic knee strength at 60º/s, and hip adduction strength at two-time moments (TM) separated by five months. Peak torque normalised by bodyweight (PT/BW) of knee extensors (KE) and knee flexors (KF) were used for analysis. The differences between groups in strength were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U test. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was conducted to verify differences between the performance of the PL and NPL in each group and to compare the performance between TM1 and TM2. At TM1, the EG presented a significantly better performance in KF PT/BW and hip adduction strength for the PL and NPL (p £ 0.01). In TM2, the EG performed substantially better in KE PT/BW and KF PT/BW (p £ 0.01). In both groups, no substantial bilateral strength differences were observed in knee and hip adduction performance. From TM1 to TM2, significant increases were found in knee strength in both groups (p £ 0.01). Overall, the EG players outperformed their lower-division peers in strength assessments significantly. The results also indicate significant knee and hip muscle strength increases during the season (except for the EG in hip adduction strength), probably as a response to the exposure to training and competition.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of low back pain (LBP) in adult professional soccer players. Methods: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Results: The review included 44 studies. The pooled prevalence of LBP during ≤ 1 season was 1% (95%CI = 0-4%) in men. The pooled point prevalence of LBP was 25% (95%CI = 16-36%) in men and 28% (95%CI = 20-37%) in women. The pooled past-year prevalence of LBP was 34% (95%CI = 24-44%) in men. The pooled lifetime prevalence of LBP was 32% (95%CI = 25-39%) in men and 50% (95%CI = 32-69%) in women. The pooled frequency of LBP/total number of injuries was 2% (95%CI = 1-3%) in men and 4% (95%CI = 2-5%) in women. The pooled incidence rate of LBP/1,000 player-hours of exposure was 0.30 (95%CI = 0.17- 0.53) in men and 0.32 (95%CI = 0.06 -1.87) in women. The recurrence of LBP ranged from 3% to 63% in men. The intensity of LBP ranged from 1.68 (2.39) to 4.87 (2.14) points on a 0-10 scale (minimum = 0 and maximum = 8 points). The severity of LBP (days absent from professional activities due to pain) ranged from 2 (0) to 10 (19) days (minimum = 1 and maximum = 28 days). Conclusion: Adult elite soccer players have a substantial prevalence of LBP. The frequency and incidence of LBP (compared with other conditions and sports) seems to be low. Estimates of the recurrence, intensity, and severity of LBP are uncertain. Level of Evidence II, Systematic Review of Level II Studies.

This research aims at analyzing how the rivalry between the Hercílio Luz Futebol Clube and Atlético Tubarão Club supporters, both from the city of Tubarão, south of Santa Catarina, is symbolically structured. For that, we analyze the comments in the profiles of the social network Facebook of the media of the city, from the point of view of the anthropology of the imaginary. We will use the theoretical set of imaginary proposed by Gilbert Durand that allows, through his concepts, to analyze the behavior of fans of the sport of greater world appeal: football. One of the main sources of identification and significance for those involved with the phenomenon, which has in digital journalism a space of identification and dispute demarcation, as Maffesoli points out. The article tries to raise the symbols that structure this rivalry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Objective As the soccer culture in Brazil is more popular than schooling, this study reflected on the formal education levels of soccer (football) players through descriptive and quantitative analyses. Methods We evaluated 179 national soccer players playing various positions on different teams across six seasons (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2022). Data were collected using a questionnaire comprising the following variables: age, position in the pitch, age of professionalization, and education (years of study). The data were distributed according to the pitch position. Results The mean age, length of professional career, and professionalization age were 23±6 years, 7±5 years, and 17±2 years, respectively. In terms of education, 121 athletes (67%) completed high school, equivalent to 11 years of study. Only 5.5% completed higher education, with defensive players (goalkeepers and defenders) being the most educated at 37% (66/179). According to 2017 figures from the Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios Contínua of the Federal Government of Brazil, the schooling rate is 31.7%, wherein 46.1% of Brazilians aged 25 years or over have completed education. In this study of 179 athletes, 67% had completed high school. Thus, players outrank the Brazilian population in terms of achieving a high school education. There were marked disparities in the relative proportions of goalkeepers (85%), defensive players (68%), midfielders (63%), and forward players (64%) in terms of their education. Conclusion Our survey revealed that attending higher education remains a distant reality in Brazil.

COMMUNICATION in sports , *SOCCER , *WOMEN'S soccer , *INDOOR soccer , *CONTENT analysis , *DIGITAL communications , *GENDER inequality - Abstract
As gender equality is a democratic priority worldwide and sport is a platform with repercussions for its discussion, this article aims to understand how the Brazilian Football Confederation, the entity responsible for the regulation and administration of Brazilian football, represents gender in its online communication. Using quantitative content analysis, we have systematized 12,836 CBF publications on football and futsal by themes and content formats, on their official online channels, between January 1 and March 31, 2022. The results reveal the sub-representation of women's football in seven of the eight communication channels studied; and in the eight channels, in the case of futsal. The study aims to contribute to critical studies of digital sports communication involving the notion of gender equality and to research on sports communication within the scope of regulatory bodies. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of velocity-oriented (VOTF) and strengthoriented (SOTF) functional training (TF) on different parameters of running change of direction (COD), jumping ability and linear velocity in under-20 soccer players. For this, 22 players were randomly assigned to VOFT and SOFT groups. The participants were evaluated at the pre- and post-intervention moment in the L-running test to the right side (CODLD) and to the left side (CODLE) to evaluate the fast COD (≤ 90°) and in the zigzag test to evaluate the strength COD (> 90°). Jump height was measured by countermovement jump (CMJ) and squat jump (SJ). Maximum speed was assessed by the 20-meter sprint test. The change of direction deficit index (COD deficit) was calculated for all COD tests. Both groups showed significant improvement over time in CODLD, zigzag test, COD-deficit CODLD, and COD zigzag deficit. The 20-meter sprint test, CODLE, and COD-deficit CODLE did not differ significantly for either group at any time point. Despite not showing a statistically significant difference over time, CMJ had a small effect size for VOFT and SOFT. At the same time, the SJ showed a moderate effect size for VOFT and a small effect size for SOFT. Furthermore, there was no significant difference between groups for any variable. Therefore, it is concluded that the application of FT protocols oriented towards speed or strength as a complement to tactical technical training, over four weeks, promotes significant changes in different COD running parameters in under-20 soccer players. This paper analyzes the advertising campaign Sócio Olímpico-Cadeiras Cativas, created by Osvaldo Moles for the São Paulo Futebol Clube. Ran from 1955 to 1959, the campaign sought to raise funds for the construction of Morumbi Stadium, through the sale of club memberships. The newspapers' advertisements showed an intense promotion of the Sócio Olímpico title as a factor of social distinction. Nonetheless, numerous elements have revealed that, on the contrary, the Campaign had a clear massified dimension, supported also by widely accessible purchasing conditions. The paper thus aims to expand the investigation of the publicity and commercializing and comprehend the coexistence of the massive and differentiate within the same propaganda. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was designed to investigate the influence of eSports fan identification on traditional sports teams and vice-versa, specifically in cases where there is an intersection of soccer teams and the eSports world. The Points of Attachment Index was applied with the theoretical background used mainly being the Social Identity Theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979). Four substantive hypotheses were translated into a conceptual model. Surveys were collected during eSports events in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 2019. Valid questionnaires collected reached 1,420. Data analysis was completed by applying descriptive analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis, to verify the reliability of the constructs, as well as the convergent and discriminant validity. The Structural Equation Modeling technique was used to test the substantive hypotheses. The empirical outcomes suggest that the identification of a fan with a soccer club exerts a positive influence on the identification of the fan with the club’s eSports team, but the opposite cannot be stated.

This article discusses the winning of the 1970 World Cup by the Brazilian team and how the military dictatorship and especially President Medici took advantage of this triumph to mask the entire scenario of repression that the country was experiencing. Aspects of the president's participation will be analyzed before, during and after the winningof the cup, investigating how the victory of the Brazilian team in Mexico was used by Médici to legitimize and glorify his government and the dictatorship in the country, manipulating the population through nationalist chants and representations of the titled “savior of the nation”. Therefore, this article was justified as a qualitative research that seeks to elucidate the issue of soccer as mass manipulation, emphasizing President Medici's effort to link the victory of the Brazilian team to his government, controlling the press through publications that linked his image and mandate to the Brazilian team Three-time Chanpionship, in order to create a “Brazilian” nationalist figure and guarantee the support of the population. The results of this article were obtained through a partial, descriptive case study with a qualitative, documentary and bibliographic nature, analyzing the works of Marcos Guterman (2004) and (2006), Ricardo Martins (1999), Ernesto Marczal (2013), Jônatas Santos (2017), among others.

The World Cup is a global event that gives vent to the expression of a series of geopolitical relations. This article aims at discussing the relationships between geopolitics and football from events of the 2018 World Cup related to the manifestation of nationalist and/or communitarian identities. The cases discussed were thematically grouped into the struggle for national (re)affirmation; (de)construction of communities; and the foreign: between us and them. We conclude that, despite its growing global character, football has been used as a vehicle for nationalist and communitarian manifestations precisely because it maintains a territorial logic based on the limits of nation-states, but also because it combines this logic with cultural hybridisms and multi-territorialities. this text is the result of studies and research conducted on the new legal categories arising from Law No. 14,193/2021 (Law of the Anonymous Football Society), which, in contemporary times, start to (re)organize sports practice in the various areas in which Brazilian football develops. These new regulations are considered as those that not only allow inclusion through sport, but mainly those that serve to discipline sports management, in the field of football, specifically, as an economic-business activity. The methodology used not only for studies and research, but also for the elaboration of this theoretical-pragmatic communication was based on the critical-reflexive perspective, with support and interaction between legal-legal rationality and the important multidisciplinary contributions offered by other human knowledge/knowledge, here, were analyzed, respectively, according to the contemporary parameters of each of their "art states". This work aimed to analyze the importance that sports logistics has within Brazilian football. In this way, interviews were conducted with scholars and professionals involved in the field of management and sports, who were asked how sports logistics can positively influence the management of a football club, especially in Brazil, which has a complex calendar of games. According to the reference of the authors used in the study and in the interviewees' reports, it was evident how relevant it is for a club that aims for positive results, financially and sportingly, to have a good well-accurate logistics sector and that is able to carry out its work together with all the departments of a football club. Where it was evident, according to the interviewees, the importance of logistics and its main attributions, including its importance in other sectors for being responsible for all operational planning. Demonstrating that even with a complex and heavy schedule of games that clubs face in Brazil, managers are increasingly preparing for such challenges. And having a good logistical supervisor within the club, supervising the entire process, makes the chances of achieving positive results much greater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
