This document describes the participation of Portuguese women in the 1958 presidential elections in Portugal. It identifies women's support committees for opposition candidates and analyses the extent of women's participation, as well as the involvement of certain print publications in the electoral process. This article analyses a series of articles published in Portuguese and Indian newspapers concerning the business trips of Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa to India in January 2017 and December 2019. It aims to scrutinise how, on the one hand, India and his Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, are presented in the Portuguese press and, on the other, how Portugal and António Costa are portrayed in the Indian press. What are the media frameworks and the language used by political actors and journalists during these trips? What are the affinities and the contrasts in the texts which circulate in the printed press in the colonial and in post-colonial periods? Does the coverage in the Portuguese and Indian presses at the beginning of the 21st century give us any indication of some post-colonial resentment in the current relations between India and Portugal? The aim of the article is to analyze the representations about Stroessner and his government in the Brazilian newspaper O Globo between the Paraguayan dictator presidential inauguration in August 1954 and the exile of Argentine president Juan Domingo Perón in Paraguay between October 2nd and November 2nd, 1955. Perón's exile aroused the interest of the international press and led O Globo to analyze Stroessner based on the anti-Peronism that existed in the Brazilian liberal press. For the Paraguayan opposition, it was an opportunity to denounce the authoritarianism that exists in the country. The article proposes a reading of the Stroessner dictatorship from a transnational perspective. Furthermore, it points to the existence of questions about Stroessner in the Brazilian press before the deepening of Brazil-Paraguay relations during the government of Juscelino Kubitschek (1956-1961). The article aims to investigate the use of pesticides in Soledade, a municipality in Rio Grande do Sul, between the years 1989 and 1990. The intensive use of chemicals in the fields has historically been associated with the spread of the technological package of the Green Revolution, adopted in Brazil in the 1950s. This technology was part of the modernization process of agriculture, which aimed at increasing production and productivity. For the present investigation, this study employs the conceptual and methodological frameworks of Environmental History, using press and oral sources. It was concluded that various significant environmental problems were linked to the intensive use of pesticides in the mentioned region, such as the contamination of people, animals, and water sources, contributing to the stigmatization of the farmer who was socially held responsible for chemical accidents. According to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, between 2015 and 2017, 1,761 suspected cases of feminicide were reported throughout Mexican territory. These murders of women, linked to a culture of machismo, occur within a context where impunity rates have remained consistently high throughout the country’s history. The purpose of this article is to analyze the coverage of feminicide in the Mexican press during the most violent year of President Enrique Peña Nieto’s six-year term, from January 1st to December 31st, 2017. A content analysis was employed to examine a total of 988 journalistic texts on femicide during 2017, encompassing the seven most widely read newspapers in Mexico: La Jornada, El Universal, Milenio, Excélsior, Reforma, El Economista, and El Financiero. The coverage provided by the Mexican press extended beyond reporting on the murders of women, to various aspects related to the phenomenon, including political and governmental actions to address and prevent violence against women (design and implementation of public policies, programs on violence and impunity), social actions and demands (the feminist movement), and the dissemination of research and other content related to cultural and recreational activities. The research reveals a notable diversification in the published content on femicide and a shift in sources, with witnesses, family members of the victims, and perpetrators no longer serving as the primary sources of information on femicide.

This theoretical article, anchored in bibliographical and empirical research, aims to demonstrate how the Twitter Platform, due to its functionalities and operating through algorithms, benefited Jair Bolsonaro's political project during the second round of the electoral campaign in 2022 in Brazil. Through his personal profile, the former president sought to capture the function of the press, benefiting from the news value of shareability and the value-algorithm, an automated way for the machine to categorize the relevance of content on the social network. The value-algorithm on Twitter played a crucial role in Jair Bolsonaro's populist reactionary ideological anchor speech, as it grouped his supporters to fuel permanent polarization. In this article we intend to present some considerations (more than explanations) about the field of meanings of the words homeland and patriotism in Portugal in the aftermath of the Liberal Revolution of 1820. To this end, we will use as a reference a periodical called Patriota Portuense, published between January and December 1821 in Porto. The article is divided into two fundamental parts. Firstly, we will try to understand how the concepts of homeland and patriotism gained popularity in the educated and politicized circles of Enlightened Europe, especially in Spain, France and England. We chose these countries because of their preponderance in the experience of the first Portuguese liberalism and in the interpretations of the concepts under analysis, in the case of the last two even because of the experience and learning that exile will provide. In the second, we will focus on the revolutionary meaning that, with the military pronouncement of 1820, in Portugal, these terms definitively began to be enunciated through the Patriota Portuense. As we consider newspapers to be key analytical instruments for conceptual history, we will try to see, in an unstable political context, what meanings were attributed by this periodical to words and how it tried to act on reality. The Tri-Border Area between Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay is often seen as a lawless region, which ignores its character as a center of energy resources, commerce, and tourism. The focus of this article is to identify the representations about the region in Brazil’s two most widely read newspapers, the Folha de S.Paulo and O Globo, and if they reinforce these images. To do so, the concepts of framing and agenda-setting are used. A qualitative analysis was complemented by the use of NVivo software to detect the words most frequently associated with the region. The results indicate a predominance of issues related to illegalities in the press coverage, especially terrorism. Of the total texts about the Tri-Border Area published between 2011 and 2019, 55.5% in O Globo and 47% in Folha contained references to illegalities. The root terror- was present, respectively, in 39% and 40% of the texts. We conclude that the press coverage of the region does not follow specific events (event-driven). Members of security forces are the preeminent sources of reports, and the absence of dissonant voices tends to reinforce the region’s image of insecurity and the need for solutions that involve support border surveillance and control solutions. Trudi Landau (1920-2015) was a Jewish woman who was born in Germany. She came to Brazil with her husband, Jean Landau, in 1946. In Brazil her only child died, here she lived in a dictatorship and found a form of social intervention in literature. She became a reader of journalistic chronicle and chroniclers' correspondent, mainly for Lourenço Diaféria and Carlos Drummond de Andrade. From a perspective that understands literature through its interaction with the context, as a human practice at a historical process, we analyze how the characteristics of the journalistic chronicle contributed to Trudi Landau's interest in this literary genre and how this literature became important in her life and social relationships. Given this relationship between reader, writers and literary texts, this research aims to contribute to the studies of history, literature and the press, especially with regard to journalistic chronicles as a literary genre. In this dialogue, the journalist, poet, blogger, cultural agitator and actor Fernando Alexandre speaks about culture, music, poetry, art, theatre. He worked in the main press agencies from Brazil and created the journal Lira Paulistana. This is a contribution to interested in know a history of press, of art, of culture and of music from Brazil. This article analyzes the production of scientific and media discourses about the tattooed body during the first half of the 20th century. In the course of the text, we will discuss how the discursive strategy of privileged institutions for the production and circulation of discourses, notably science and the press, invested in the construction of an image of the tattoo associated with deviance, criminality and a supposed moral insufficiency of its bearer. As a result, the tattooed were represented as potentially criminals and constantly placed under suspicion through an association between tattooing and criminality which, although it oscillated between lombrosian notions of the born criminal and the sociological notion of the subject as a product of the social environment, did not hesitate in blurring the margins between the tattooed subject and the potentially criminal subject. With the default of French imperialism in the Indochina War, the military created the thesis that its war doctrine was not prepared to face this threat: an internal enemy that would be acting in favor of communism. Alzira Alves de Abreu was present in the development of the fi elds that are conventionally called oral history and history of the present, in the period that extends from the foundation of CPDOC (center for teaching and research in the Social Sciences and Contemporary History) to the fi rst decades of the 2000s. The paper approaches ways in which the debates around the tax reform in Argentina were reflected and readjusted into municipal levels during the WWI economic crisis. By taking the case of Posadas, capital city of the national territory of Misiones, it proposes to observe how the new debates on the tax system and the municipal attributions to establish a more progressive levy were reflected from the local newspaper La Tarde. Through this analyses it is sustained that the issues discussed show the circulation of ideas according to which municipalities were conceived as government institutions provided with the necessary attributions to introduce tax reforms or redirect their tax policies based on a progressive levy, and also regulate the prices of basic foodstuffs, in order to favor low-income sectors affected by the crisis. Likewise, we argue that although these conceptions were nurtured by widespread economic ideas such as Georgism, they also received influence from the experiences of other municipalities that worked as models of what could be done. In this context, municipal initiatives can be understood as inserted in a wider field of discussions over the scope of municipal capacities during the crisis and not only as local responses.

This article seeks to understand the positions of three Rio de Janeiro journals, Careta, Fon-Fon and O Malho, in terms of a woman’s role in the concept of the “modern family” during the first half of the twentieth century, whether as a daughter, wife, or mother. Based on the concept of modern patriarchy, we seek to understand the new forms of patriarchy in republican Brazil and how these affected women’s behavior, their everyday lives in the family sphere and in social and power dynamics in private and public spaces, during this period of accelerated change. The article seeks to show how Lima Barreto highlighted in his work the issue of prejudice to which he was subjected while alive, due to his race and class condition. Through the search for traces of the press of the time (1910-1922), it also shows how the newspapers subjected him, in the period, to a cruel policy of forgetting and, above all, disqualification. It also seeks, following Lima Barreto's life trajectory, to answer the question: what was it like to be a black intellectual, living in the suburbs, without carrying any of the items of distinction necessary for the literate of the period, less than two decades of the end of slavery? The present text aims to discuss the process of creation of the Ilheus Commercial School from the publications made in the newspaper Diário da Tarde in the 1930s, using a qualitative approach and documentary analysis. It is an ongoing research on the creation of the Ilhéus Commercial School, a research of the Postgraduate Program of Professional Master's in Education. This institution was created in 1934 and is still functioning. The partial results point to an effective action of the Commerce Employees Association for the creation of this school institution, with the purpose of qualifying commerce workers in the city of Ilhéus. The local press, through the Diário da Tarde, emphasized throughout the 1930s the actions in benefit of the creation, maintenance and operation of this educational institution. This article is aimed at analyzing the discourse Instruction and Civism, by Higino Cunha (2013), written in 1910, published in the Periodical of the Piauiense Academy of Letters of 1919, ediction which is available in the Project Memória do Jornalismo Piauiense. This is a hemerographic, documental and bibliographic research, which has the following authors to dialogue with the theme: Queiroz (2011), Chartier (1990), Brito (1996), Souza (2008), Capelato (1988), Nóvoa (2002), Sousa (2020), among others. In the discourse Instruction and Civism, it is possible to carry out a survey of several pillars of HiginoCunha's thought, such as training oriented to patriotism in all areas, importance of investment in education, education as the construction of national unity, preservation of republican ideals, literary cultivation, knowledge as a universal engine, and modern education. We propose a current reading of data from organizations that indicate the strategies adopted by the government of Brazilian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro with regard to the press. We found that the actions are characterized by attempts to establish editorial control over journalists and newspapers through three resources: the surgical transfer of public resources through government advertising funds, the judicialization of conflicts with the press and the discrediting of work journalistic through public attacks. The study also points out a favorable historical condition for the exercise of journalistic control and censorship practices in Brazil, particularly characterizing the country's press. The study addresses the history of the carnival at the Floresta Montenegrina club, a notorious associative space, founded in 1916 in the city of Montenegro (RS). city of Montenegro from the presence of the samba school linked to the club Floresta Montenegrina. The research is based on the microhistorical analysis of Jornal Ibiá, in editions from 1985 to 2007, which allows access to information about the creation of the Escola de Samba Floresta and the events held to raise funds for the parade in the streets of Montenegro. Through the research, it is concluded that the carnival is a tool used by the club to build a solid support network for the black community of Vale do Caí, as well as to give visibility to the black guidelines and traditions maintained by society and present in their celebrations carnivalesque. This article aims to introduce the reader to the beginning of Azevedo Amaral's journalistic career as an international correspondent for the newspaper Correio da Manhã, through his column entitled "Cartas de Londres". Published between 1910 and 1917, the main objective of the column was to discuss the European political scenario, with emphasis on events related to the First World War, which were widely accepted by the newspaper's readership. The success of the column "Letters from London" projected Azevedo Amaral as an important journalist in the early 1920s, in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to presenting the journalist's trajectory, this study seeks to contribute to the History of the Press, since the periodical press has become an important documentary source for historians in recent years. This article seeks to analyze how the Veja Magazine contributed in the process of deconstruction and disqualification of President Dilma Rousseff's image, contributing to the construction of the coup d'état executed in Brazil in 2016. Discussing the political scenario and the rise of center-left after 2002, highlighting the alliance and the neodevelopmentalist politics adopted by the political bloc that the Workers Party leaded, and constructing the chronology of 2016's coup. Was analyzed the narrative on the cover of five different editions of Veja Magazine, all published in 2016 about the impeachment process, showing how this communication vehicle was extremely relevant in the major context that leads into President Dilma Rousseff's coup and her disqualification in the political scenario. "O autor de si mesmo" and "Mineirinho" are both chronicles written as reactions to newspaper reports about cases of extreme violence. Both are also texts published in the mainstream media of their time: Gazeta de Notícias, in the case of Machado de Assis, and the magazine Senhor, in the case of Clarice Lispector. The purpose of this article is to investigate the social experiences of “centenarians” africans and afro-brazilians in the city of Rio de Janeiro between 1890- 1906. The proposal consists of evaluating the conditions under which these subjects lived, established relationships and moved around the federal capital in the early years of the “Primeira República”. For that, the sources mobilized in this work include the Municipal Census of 1906 and the press of the city of Rio between 1890-1906. The relevance of this delimitation is to reveal new possibilities for understanding the trajectories of black men and women after the Abolition from a perspective based on racial relations. This article uses the records of the newspaper El Correo del Sur, published in Concepción -a city located in the south of the nascent state of Chile- between 1849 and 1865, to examine perceptions of the historical changes unleashed by the innovations of the industrial revolution, linked with the installation of milling factories, the development of coal mining, the use of steam engines and the publication of newspapers. Particularly it focuses in the point of view of the emergent new social agents, such as businessmen, elite women and salaried workers, also joined by traditional actors as Mapuche merchants around the Araucanía border who remained outside the republican state. These people were reported on in the newspaper as characters which articulated the transition to a global market economy.
