PANDEMICS , *YOUNG adults , *LATIN Americans , *POLITICAL participation - Abstract
This text presents the dossier "Latin American youth: challenges and potentialities in the context of the pandemic" whose main objective is to make visible the experience of Latin American youth during the pandemic, offering contributions to the resolution of the revealed and deepened problems in this period. The Dossier brings together ten studies on five Latin American countries that address the themes: the displacement and importance of time, space and perspectives for the future among young people during the pandemic, inequality in the use of ICTs in the area of education, growth in precarious jobs and the political participation of youth. Due to the important contributions, we consider the Dossier as a landmark in the field of studies on Latin American youth and as a unique record of how the pandemic has impacted the lives of youth. LATIN Americans , *STRUCTURAL dynamics , *EQUALITY , *SOCIAL reality , *SOCIAL context , *PARTICIPATION - Abstract
Studying childhood in Latin America requires considering the context of social inequality in which so many children are immersed, as well as the complexity of thinking about the pluralization of childhood and the multiplicity of life experiences of children in this region. Children encounter scenarios of discrimination, subordination and social segregation, among other situations that configure their action in a society that distances them from the universal, ideal understanding of childhood that is associated with schooling and play; nor are they always protected in those institutional spaces that should guarantee their full development. In this respect, thinking about Latin American children's protagonism and participation in their own lifeworlds requires an understanding of the different social realities that do not promote given, ready-made types and styles, but which are built on the dynamics of relationships, spaces, places and times so that the participation occurs. The present study aims to address reflections on child protagonism in Latin America through an exploratory study of the scientific publications on the subject in the Spanish-speaking countries of the continent in recent years, in order to identify how the concept has been understood and discussed in the academic environment. This literature, which has historically occupied the social and scientific margins, will make it possible to understand the different experiences of living childhood in these countries, and to dialogue with the issues and problems that permeate children's lives. These problems demand attention, and call for initiatives and spaces for participation that will act to increase the social visibility of children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study addresses the question of the experience and contemplation of salvation from the point of view of Latin American women. The results are based on the contributions of different women in a field work investigation. A quantitative and qualitative analysis with a "contrast sample" was carried out with a group of men. Based on these results, I plan to come to a conclusion by highlighting a basic coincidence, at a theoretical level, of the vision of salvation among men and women, as well as some particular features that stand out in the experience of salvation lived by women. Isabel Allende's La casa de los espíritus is an important writing narrative of Latin American women. Published in 1982, it is part of the post-boom movement that updates the writing of the Latin American boom to certain literary characteristics, such as the memoir. The purpose of this article is to analyze Allende's work from the (re)writing that character Alba makes of her family's history to recover as herself. The writing of Alba's memories represents the new directions of post-boom Latin American literature: writing in order to never forget. Finally, it is concluded by briefly developing how La casa dos espíritus acts as a text that reinforces the feminist role of empowering women through writing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LATIN Americans , *LATIN American literature , *SOCIAL injustice , *TWENTIETH century , *SOCIAL change - Abstract
This paper, which is part of a broader study of the work of Alfonsina Storni (RETAMAR, 2004), highlights the criticism in her verses about the silencing endured by Latin American women at the beginning of the 20th century. To this end, 14 poems from the Antologia Poética organized by the author were selected (STORNI, 1956). The selection had as criteria the poems that most clearly depicted the poet's commitment against the social injustice faced by women of her time. The analysis is based on the study of each poem, its relationship with the work as a whole and with the poet's biography. The critical resources about Storni were also taken into account. The analysis shows that Alfonsina's work not only contextualizes the role of the Latin American woman of her time socioculturally but also claims for her freedom by revealing the hypocrisy of the patriarchal society that sentences and silences her. Therefore, this study understands that the retrieval of Storni's work is essential for contemporary studies not only on gender but on history, literature and the 20th century society since it promotes a critical and provocative perspective of social changes on behalf of the equality between women and men. This research aims to analyze the visibility and international impact of Latin American scientific papers in Metric Studies of Information published from 2011 to 2016. It identifies the most productive countries, the journals that disseminated this research, the intensity of their scientific impact, and characterizes the scope of citations received at the national, regional and global level by applying citer analysis. As a research procedure, 1,115 papers were retrieved from the Scopus database, with at least one author from Latin America We focused on 1,107 papers produced by the 10 most productive. We identified 474 journals that published these papers. The journal core comprises 20 journals responsible for the dissemination of 380 (34%) of the paper corpus. Cluster analysis was used to understand the relationships among the 10 most productive countries. In order to verify the range of the science produced by the countries analyzed, country-based citer analysis was used. The cluster analysis revealed three groups of more homogenous countries regarding the volume and impact of research production and two isolated countries - Brazil and Peru. We concluded that the Latin American research is carried out by half of these countries, especially Brazil, accounting for more than half of this production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LITERATURE reviews , *CONTENT analysis , *NEWS websites , *LATIN Americans , *QUANTITATIVE research ,DEVELOPED countries - Abstract
This paper aims to identify how the coverage of the World section of two Brazilian news portals (O Globo and Folha de S. Paulo) is accomplished. We seek to comprehend in which range Latin America countries are presented within the World section of the researched portal, examining also the rate of appearance of the United States as well as European countries. The literature review enables to advance two hypothesis: 1) The United States is the country with the highest rate of appearance in both portals' coverage; 2) Latin American countries have a low rate of appearance, even though both portals being Brazilian. In order to test this hypothesis, we used quantitative content analysis, which allows us to identify patterns and differences in the coverage of portals permitting comparisons. The data was collected since 2018 April until July and the results indicated similarities in the analyzed portals, with both coverages presenting Latin America countries, although showing significant differences in comparison to the so-called developed nations. POLITICAL parties , *COMPARATIVE government , *LATIN Americans , *STATUTES , *IDEOLOGY - Abstract
This study analyzes and classifies the internal organization of Latin American political parties, comparing the content of 42 party statutes distributed in the 18 democratic countries from this region. The statute analysis focused on their comparison, highlighting the presence or absence of certain contents in each of them. The prevailing view of the region indicates a case of party underdevelopment, in which the associations are described as having fragile internal organizations, in many cases these are nonexistent. This work does not share that view and argues that Latin America has a broad party spectrum in which parties with different organization levels coexist. The main results indicate a strong influence of ideology and original type on the party’s format. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This text seeks to present a debate on decolonial feminisms, beyond to the academic discussion on Coloniality. My objective is to indicate possible ways for researchers interested in the decolonial keys but dissatisfied with its limitations when encountering empirical situations. In this way, I will present in general way the decolonial thought to bring some close reflections about coloniality and gender using two texts of Latin American authors (Ochy Curiel and Breny Mendoza). In the end, I will draw some theoretical and methodological possibilities, in light of both the discussion of these texts and the research I have developed with indigenous people in Brazil. My studies with indigenous women and to the indigenous LGBTIQ movement in Brazil have hitherto pointed to an original and radical movement beyond decolonial discussions pointing out new possibilities beyond those indicated by the theoretical discussions brought here. This article seeks to contribute to the decolonial option for understanding the organizational reality in Latin America. The Modernity / Coloniality / Decoloniality (DCM) project is promoted by Latin American authors, predominantly Spanishspeaking. However, few authors of Brazilian social thought are cited in the works elaborated from this perspective. The objective of the article is to bring the contribution of two Brazilian authors, the sociologist Guerreiro Ramos and the economist Celso Furtado, who have much to contribute with the MCD project, as well as for the better understanding of the organizations in Latin America. fierefore, the article investigates, based on the perspective of border thinking, the intersections of the works "The Sociological Reduction" (Ramos, 1958) and "Economic Formation of Brazil" (Furtado, 1959); and "The Brazilian Pre-Revolution" (Furtado, 1962) and "Myth and Truth of the Brazilian Revolution" (Ramos, 1963). Freire intends to bring the oppressed onto the stage of history. However, their emergence as historical subjects is weakened as long as there is an incompleteness: their demands continue to be worked out by knowledge and practices demanded by the oppressors. In Freire’s work, it is quite unclear if knowledge and practices are considered to host values. The theorization that emerges from the approximation between Freire and the Latin American Thought in Science, Technology and Society (PLACTS) seeks to work on this incompleteness. So, which challenges and possibilities related to this theoretical-methodological framework arise when productive and educational processes dialogue? We analyzed an example of praxis implemented in the context of food production according to the principles of agroecology. From the reflection on this praxis, we concluded that, in order to overcome said incompleteness, Freire’s conception of dialogue should be expanded to encompass a dialogue of knowledge between three fields: the so-called historically produced knowledge, the unpublished knowledge (resulting upon conflict confrontation over ignored demands among the oppressed) and biocultural memory. From this process, two new categories arise, which are still incipient: co-production and co-learning, which, signaling new horizons for productive and educational processes, are nourished by the dialogue between both. This is a dialogue between the agenda of the oppressed and the pedagogy of the oppressed.

In the contemporary educational scenario, marked by the globalization and appreciation of academic education, immigrants leave their countries looking for better educational opportunities. When moving from their places of belonging, these immigrants will have to deal with the distance from the cultural and social references that guided their day-to-day lives and with the cultural and educational difference of the new context, which in turn can generate a state of psychic vulnerability and suffering. This study sought to understand the impacts of immigration on the mental health of undergraduate university immigrants from the Federal University of Latin American Integration (UNILA). To this end, we sought to identify what are the pre and post-migratory risk factors for students' mental health, the post-migration psychological symptoms and finally the pre and post-migratory protection factors. Difficulties were encountered by the participants, but immigration/academic mobility was also shown as a possibility of continuing a life project.

In Latin America, under the premise of enhancing economic competitiveness, there has been an exponential increase in investments in the development of nanotechnologies. In this context, the discussion about intellectual property rights concerning nanotechnology is increasingly central to public debates. However, in comparison with the attention that this issue has attracted in both public and private contexts, there has been little academic analysis published on property rights and nanotechnology. This article problematizes the application of property rights in the development of nanotechnologies through a critical literature review of the existing literature on the topic. From this analysis, the key issue of the restrictions imposed on the application of patents on ‘first generation’ products is analyzed. This question pits those who claim rights to royalties to recoup R and D investments made to develop these technologies against those who argue for open access to science and technology.

They emerge in adverse or restrictive contexts. Signal the need for connection on the part of those who use them. In the island of Cuba, paquetes, sets of files containing pop culture content, music, series, US blockbusters, among others, not shown in Cuban media systems, are the most established cultural form of mediatic gambiarra on the socialist island. The article presents the result of a research project carried out between the years 2015 and 2017, based on an ethnographic-inspired methodology, with field interviews and participant observation in the city of Havana, with the purpose of debating different uses of the paquetes by consumers and fans of pop culture in the Cuban context. Contradictions about the practices of paqueteros — subjects who sell paquetes in online and offline network creations — are mapped from the emergence of traces of capitalism in Cuba that pass through the always conflicting relationship between residents in Havana and migrants in Miami in symbolic disputes on the island. The questions raised in the field signal for different matrixes around transnationalism in Latin America, geopolitical issues and point to understandings about the singularities and challenges of contemporary Cuba.

This article has as starting point the topicality and relevance of Paulo Freire’s epistemic and pedagogical thinking for Decolonial Studies. This is a qualitative research of a bibliographic nature that aimed to understand the dialectic between denunciation and announcement in the epistemology of Paulo Freire, in Abya Yala. For this purpose, the three main works written and published in the period of his exile were taken as an object of analysis: Education: the practice of freedom; Pedagogy of the oppressed; and Pedagogy in process: the letters to Guinea-Bissau. Some dimensions of analysis were presented: oppressor/oppressed, dehumanization/humanization and culture of silence/dialogue, awareness/colonization of minds, hope/hopelessness and liberation/domestication, demonstrating that Freire is a precursor and critical testimony of modernity-coloniality.

Prospectiva. Crisis global de cuidados. Distopia. América Latina. The issue of care in the post-pandemic setting. Towards States of Care or Gilead? ABSTRACT This communication aims to analyze the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on the pre-existing global care crisis, which also affects Latin American societies. Next, prospective analysis is carried out seeking to identify elements of the present with potential for projection into the immediate and mediate future, which can permanently reconfigure structural aspects in the social organization of care. The methodology is comparative, considering studies from a gender perspective carried out by multilateral organizations, state areas and by civil society organizations, as well as official statistics. These provisional results are placed in an epistemological dialogue with academic reference literature on the subject. The results present possible dichotomous alternatives in the post-pandemic scene: elevation of care to political category and a civilizing ethos materialized in forms of State ad hoc, or the return to patriarchy as an absolute logic for human coexistence, this time in the name of rationality sanitary. Keywords: Pandemic. Prospective. Global crisis of care. Distopia. Latin America.

This article aims to analyze the relationship between one of the greatest figures of Latin American Marxism, the Peruvian José Carlos Mariátegui, and the most impactful political process in the twentieth century, the Russian Revolution. To do so, one will look at both the author's analysis of events in revolutionary Russia through his writings produced over the years and at different moments of his life, ranging from youth to maturity, as well as the reflections that the construction of socialism generated in his thinking, expanding the horizons of his theoretical formulations and political propositions.

Applying a historizing perspective, this text presents a critical consideration of different spacial imaginations and conceptions. It articulates cientific and aesthetic, sociocultural and antropolicall paradigms in order to reflect on the various relations between the socioeconomical and political situations in which Brazil and – with regional varients – also in other countries in Latin America found themselves involved, and the processes of spatial configurations that increasingly manifested themselves during the 21st century. In doing so, the paper critically highlights the conceptual contexts for the spatial practices on which this dossier reflects. Finally, the paper calls attention to the conspicuous absence of the great voices of Brazilian cenography in the reflexive discourse on these processes in Brasil and Latinamerica in the 21st century.
