This article is about the field of socio-legal studies and the sociology of the field. This division enables working with two dimensions of the author’s socio-legal scholarly personality, especially as it relates to Brazil. It is going to try to describe, not prescribe, and the description is very preliminary. It is in part meant to provoke responses and criticisms that will make the description better. Part one examines the rise and to some extent fall of the field of socio-legal studies in the United States. Part two will examine and make a preliminary contrast to a kind of parallel and contrasting story in Brazil. Part three moves to a different approach, a more sociological approach, focusing on lawyers as a point of entry into issues of law and state. Part four is the most tentative part of this talk as it a very preliminary contrast of the U.S. story with what I know preliminarily about Brazil in relation to the same issues of the place of law, elite production, hegemony, and globalization. Finally, it raises a couple of research projects and questions raised by this sociological examination.

The article discusses a two studies including one dealing with comprehension of concept by deaf children and hearing children of same age groups, whereas the other involves evaluation of enhancing deaf children's apprehension. Topics discussed include additive composition, interventions could improve the performance of deaf children in tasks, and counting.

My comment on the fascinating personal accounts of experiences with the Yale Law and Modernization program will be in part personal. My own career and research interests are part of the ripple effect of that program and of the scholars who participated in it. After offering that personal account, I will try to look at the context for the Law and Modernization initiative in relation to the changing role of law and lawyers in the US and the way in which that role was exported as part of Cold War strategies. I will suggest that the battles around the Law and Modernization Program provide strong evidence of the crisis during an era of relative idealism (not inconsistent with US hegemonic designs abroad and social control policies at home) connected to modernization and what Trubek and Galanter termed liberal legalism.[1] What’s more, the program nurtured leaders in producing scholarship designed to update or replace liberal legalism, legal missionaries, and legal imperialism. Much of what we know as Law and Society, Critical Legal Studies, and other critical approaches came from these scholars and the events around Law and Modernization. I was a freshman undergraduate at Yale at the time of the beginnings of the Law and Modernization program in the Law School in 1968, although I had no sense of the program then. My undergraduate experience was all about the left, the critique of pluralism, European critical theory, and US critical histories. I told my historian advisor that I was thinking of law school (after he told me there were no positions in history), and he warned me about the conservatism, telling me among other things that law faculty tended to drive American cars. When there were demonstrations and strikes around the Bobby Seale trial in New Haven in 1970, followed by the demonstrations and strikes against the Cambodian invasion, I remember a forum where a law student said they could not strike because of the importance of their legal education for solving social problems. In retrospect, there was a sense among non-law students and activists, I think, that elite law was not very relevant to what was going on outside.[2] From the perspective of those within the law school, however, the accounts of the Law and Modernization cohort suggest that the students were nevertheless way in front of the general faculty.

Racial segregation has been an ongoing issue in American education and one of the leading contributors to the racial achievement gap. Prior to the Brown v. Board decision of 1954, Black Americans were legally relegated to substandard schools and educational opportunities. Post-Brown, racial segregation continues to manifest as a result of de facto segregation and second-generation segregation. Moreover, the predominantly White teaching force – a negative consequence of desegregation – has been linked to poorer outcomes for Black and Latino students. Our study examines trends in racially disproportionate assignment of Black and Latino students to less experienced teachers than their White counterparts. Specifically, our analysis illustrates statistically significant trends in the assignment of less experienced teachers to Black and Latino students in middle school math over several years. This analysis contributes to the recent research phenomenon of measuring the cumulative pattern of racially disproportionate teacher-student assignments over time as a particularly effective means of understanding the effects of systematic and sustained inequalities on academic achievement. Across several grades and content areas of instruction, we found that the race of students was related to the teaching experience of their teachers. Our findings illustrate the negative impacts of racial segregation on students of color and supports the need for more intervention and administrative intentions regarding teacher-student assignments and racial equity in schools.

Researchers and policymakers in the US and beyond increasingly seek to identify teaching qualities that are associated with academic achievement gains for K-12 students through effectiveness studies. Yet teaching quality varies with academic content and social contexts, involves multiple participants, and requires a range of skills, knowledge, and dispositions. In this essay, we address the inescapable tension between complexity and scale in research on teaching effectiveness. We provide five recommendations to study designers and analysts to manage this tension to enhance effectiveness research, drawing on our recent experiences as the first external analysts of the Measures of Effective Teaching (MET) study. Our recommendations address conceptual framing, the measurement of teaching (e.g., observation protocols, student surveys), sampling, classroom videoing, and the use and interpretation of value-added models.

Esse artigo propõe uma nova abordagem para o estudo de satisfação profissional nas carreiras jurídicas. A partir de um quadro analítico Bourdiesiano de compreensão da relação entre classe social e inclinações, sustentamos que satisfação profissional depende em parte das origens sociais e das credenciais relacionadas à essas origens, cujas hierarquias sociais ajudam a definir as expectativas e possibilidades que produzem as carreiras profissionais. Através dessas lentes, satisfação profissional é compreendida como um mecanismo por meio do qual as hierarquias sociais e profissionais são produzidas e reproduzidas. Baseado no primeiro conjunto de dados sobre carreiras jurídicas (incluindo um survey e entrevistas em profundidade), notamos que a origem social dos bacharéis em direito, tal como foi refletida no ranking das suas faculdades de direito, diminui a satisfação na carreira e aumenta a probabilidade de busca de empregos para os bacharéis em direito melhor sucedidos. Quando combinado com os dados das entrevistas, percebemos que classe social é um componente importante de um sistema de estratificação que tende a levar os indivíduos para posições hierarquicamente organizadas.

Este artículo aborda diversos aspectos clave de la gestión ambiental en el mundo en desarrollo desde la perspectiva de la ecología política. Comienza con un breve repaso de la evolución de la ecología política. Posteriormente se abordan dos casos de estudio en el Sudeste de Asia con el fin de explorar espacios de confrontación y espacios de cooperación que aglutinan elementos clave de la historia y la actualidad de la gestión ambiental en el mundo en desarrollo. En este proceso el artículo concluye que las multifacéticos políticas de transacción que tienen lugar en el mundo no pueden ser transformadas simplemente a través de apolíticas llamadas a “salvar la naturaleza”.

Metropolitan regions are vulnerable to climate change from several perspectives. Their rural territories support many strategic roles essential for the quality of life in these regions, including their contribution to food security. The survival of metropolitan agriculture requires not only protecting agricultural resources. It also requires that the value of the multi-functionality of these agricultural territories be truly appreciated for its contribution to the quality of life in these regions. Finally, farmers also need to further develop their adaptive capacity to different stressors, including climate change and variability, in order to survive and prosper, so that they can continue to play and support these strategic roles in metropolitan regions.

O presente estudo investiga as habilidades de consciência fonológica entre sujeitos repentistas e não-repentistas. Num estudo anterior nesta mesma área Roazzi, Dowker & Bryant (no prelo) encontraram uma habilidade superior dos repentistas em produzirem rimas em relação aos não-repentistas; além de apresentarem uma velocidade superior na produção da primeira rima. Ao contrário, na tarefa de consciência fonológica – adição e subtração de fonemas – os dois grupos de sujeitos não diferiram de modo significativo. A partir desses resultados, os autores concluíram que as habilidades dos repentistas parecem ser, ao mesmo tempo, altamente desenvolvidas e especializadas, corroborando o ponto de vista de que possa haver dissociações entre rima e algumas outras habilidades linguísticas como a segmentação fonológica. Ao se interpretar essa falta de diferenças em uma tarefa de consciência fonológica é necessário algum cuidado, porque um efeito de quase-teto pode ter obscurecido as reais diferenças entre os dois grupos. Procurando controlar esse efeito teto na tarefa de consciência fonológica, neste estudo sujeitos repentistas e não-repentistas foram avaliados em uma série de tarefas deste tipo com diferentes níveis de dificuldade. Os resultados mostram que as diferenças entre repentistas e não-repentistas aparecem somente nas tarefas de consciência fonológica que envolvem análises fonêmicas e que envolvem, de certa forma, a parte final da palavra. No final são discutidas as possíveis explicações destes resultados para uma melhor compreensão das pesquisas nesta área.

Atualmente existe um consenso geral que os alunos devem concluir a escolaridade básica com uma boa compreensão das ideias matemáticas básicas sobre como lidar com a incerteza. Como adultos, eles terão que tomar decisões importantes sobre a probabilidade de certos eventos e sobre o risco de uma ampla gama de perigos. O entendimento de incerteza também desempenha um papel central na ciência moderna. Muitas descobertas científicas de grande importância não teriam sido possíveis se os cientistas pensassem sobre os fenômenos no mundo apenas em termos de certezas. Em muitas situações estudadas por cientistas, e certamente em todas as situações estudadas em ciências sociais, os pesquisadores podem, na melhor das hipóteses, identificar e medir associações entre variáveis. Este artigo resume pesquisas sobre o entendimento de correlações, que avaliam se existem associações mútuas entre variáveis e a tipo e grau dessas associações. As bases cognitivas da compreensão dessas associações são analisadas nesse artigo e uma breve revisão da literatura é apresentada.

Partindo do princípio que o vocabulário das crianças é fundamental para a comunicação e a compreensão de textos escritos e para o sucesso escolar como um todo, este trabalho visa estudar um dos factores cognitivos que podem influenciar a aprendizagem de vocabulário pelas crianças – concretamente, a consciência morfológica. Os autores crêem que este conhecimento pode ser crucial para o desenvolvimento de métodos de promoção do desenvolvimento do vocabulário das crianças. O estudo que aqui se reporta demonstra que a consciência morfológica contribui para a capacidade de memorização de histórias e estímulos escritos, muito para além do papel que pode atribuir-se, nessa capacidade, às competências fonológicas dos indivíduos. A investigação conclui pela mais valia do desenvolvimento de competências morfológicas das crianças, mais ainda que as análogas competências em ortografia, como forma de promoção do alargamento do seu vocabulário.

O estudo tem como objetivo analisar a compreensão da composição aditiva dos números em crianças surdas. Este artigo descreve dois estudos que utilizaram a Tarefa de Compra de Nunes e Schliemann (1990) para investigar a compreensão da composição aditiva em crianças no contexto de contar dinheiro. No primeiro estudo, comparamos a compreensão da composição aditiva em crianças surdas à de crianças ouvintes da mesma idade. No segundo estudo, realizamos uma breve intervenção para avaliar a possibilidade de melhorar sua compreensão de composição aditiva. Concluímos que intervenções ainda que breves, mas teoricamente significativas e claramente direcionadas, podem ser usadas para melhorar o desempenho das crianças surdas nas tarefas que avaliam a composição aditiva.

ABSTRACT Objective: to examine advanced practice nursing (APN) roles internationally to inform role development in Latin America and the Caribbean to support universal health coverage and universal access to health. Method: we examined literature related to APN roles, their global deployment, and APN effectiveness in relation to universal health coverage and access to health. Results: given evidence of their effectiveness in many countries, APN roles are ideally suited as part of a primary health care workforce strategy in Latin America to enhance universal health coverage and access to health. Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico are well positioned to build this workforce. Role implementation barriers include lack of role clarity, legislation/regulation, education, funding, and physician resistance. Strong nursing leadership to align APN roles with policy priorities, and to work in partnership with primary care providers and policy makers is needed for successful role implementation. Conclusions: given the diversity of contexts across nations, it is important to systematically assess country and population health needs to introduce the most appropriate complement and mix of APN roles and inform implementation. Successful APN role introduction in Latin America and the Caribbean could provide a roadmap for similar roles in other low/middle income countries.
