Trichophyton rubrum is rarely isolated from dogs with dermatophytosis. It is an anthropophilic dermatophyte commonly causing infections in humans. A 4-year-old female Shih Tzu dog was brought to the veterinary clinic with a history of circular, crusted and non-pruritic alopecia lesions located on the head. Routine blood tests, skin scrapes and bacteriological culture revealed no abnormalities. However, Trichophyton rubrum was isolated from the fungus culture. The intradomicilar condition of the dog allows contact with its frequent hosts, the man. The fungicidal treatment was implemented with shampoo (ketoconazole base 2% + chlorhexidine 2%) and oral Itraconazole at a dose of 10 mg / kg once a day, for 28 days. The lesions healed completely and the hair grew back within a month. No recurrence occurred during the 4-month follow-up. T. rubrum should be included in the differential diagnosis of crusted skin lesions in dogs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a 16-year-old, neutered male cat that was refereed with generalized weakness, ataxia and seizures. Physical findings revealed an altered mental status and reluctance to move. Routine blood examination revealed hypoglycemia (50 mg/dL, RI: 60-126mg/dL) and the results of paired blood glucose and insulin confirmed insulinoma (50 mg/dL, RI: 60-126mg/dL) (24.8UI/mL, RI:<5 in presence of hypoglycemia) as the cause of hypoglycemia and neurological signs. Abdominal ultrasound evaluation revealed a mass of 1.8cm x 1.9cm on the left limb of the pancreas. A CT scan was suggested, but because of the altered mental status it was decided to admit the cat in internal critical unit. Despite treatment for hypoglycemia, there was no response in 12 hours confirming hypoglycemic encephalopathy, so the owner decides euthanasia. Macroscopic examination revealed a nodule in the left limb of the pancreas. Histological examination revealed a neuroendocrine neoplasia encapsulated, well demarcated and with some retention of normal architecture. Mild atypia's and mitotic figures were found with an area of necrosis and a central area of stromal fibrosis. Inmunomarcation was positive to insulin, chromogranin, and synaptophysin confirming insulinoma. The case reports highlight the occurrence of insulinoma in a cat being these tumors considered extremely rare in felines and being reported in 28 cases until now. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Inadequate eating habits in childhood predispose to the onset of metabolic diseases in adulthood. Therefore, this study aims to identify BMI changes in students of the municipality of Poços de Caldas-MGBR, aged 6 to 12 years, as well as to evaluate biochemical analysis, anthropometric data, and eating patterns. Material and Methods: A quantitative field study was conducted in three schools, one public and two private, in the period 2015-2016, with a sample of 104 children. The variables of interest were anthropometric data, blood sampling for laboratory tests, and dietary pattern form. Results: The average age of the sample was 9.5±0.2, with 53.9% of boys and 46.2% of girls. Among the prevalences found, 51.0% of infants had some change in BMI, of which 29.2% were obese and 25.0% were overweight in private schools versus 6.3% were obese and 15.6% were overweight in public schools. It was observed that 60.6% had an alteration in fasting glycemia (113.1±1.4 mg/dl), 51.9% in Cholesterol (196.0±2.9 mg/dl), 43.3% in results with alterations of HDL (40.5±0.4 mg/dl), LDL in 19.2% of infants with increased normal value (143.6±4.0 mg/dl) and TG above recommended value in 20.2% (158.8±10.7 mg/dl). Likewise, a statistically significant increase in food intake was observed, with priority for the sugar group. Discussion: The sample studied presents significant alterations for overweight and obesity, as well as values of food portions, glycemia, and dyslipidemias. Conclusions: The study in this area is important in order to map and improve the nutritional profile to reduce the risks to which children are exposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BLOOD testing , *ACIDOSIS , *OXYGEN saturation , *HYPERKALEMIA , *BLOOD gases , *MALES ,URETHRAL obstruction - Abstract
Male felines have a higher predisposition to develop urethral obstruction due to the anatomy of their long and narrow urethra. Regardless of the etiology, this condition results in hemogasometric and electrolyte abnormalities. The objective was to evaluate the hemogasometric, hydroelectrolytic, acid-base balance changes, the incidence of metabolic acidosis, and hyperkalemia in felines with urethral obstruction. Sixteen male adult felines, neutered or intact, diagnosed with total urethral obstruction, were treated at the HV-UVV. In each patient, arterial or venous blood was collected using a 1mL syringe containing sodium heparin. Using a portable IStat® blood gas analyzer, the following parameters were measured: pH, arterial oxygen pressure (PaO2), carbon dioxide arterial pressure (PaCO2), bicarbonate (HCO3-), base deficit (BE), arterial oxygen saturation (SO2), as well as the electrolytes sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+). The first blood gas analysis was performed at the baseline (T1), immediately after confirming the diagnosis of obstruction without any intervention. The second blood gas analysis was conducted 24 hours after the initial intervention (T2). At T1, 81.25% of the animals exhibited acidemia, and 50% had a BE exceeding -10 mmol/L, indicating severe metabolic acidosis. Hyperkalemia (K+ > 5.5 mmol/L) was observed in 50% of the animals at T1. All patients with acid-base and hydroelectrolyte imbalances were treated and stabilized prior to anesthesia and the unblocking procedure. At T2, 37.5% of the animals still had mild metabolic acidosis, but hyperkalemia was observed in only two animals, demonstrating the effectiveness of the established approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BLOOD testing , *URINALYSIS , *CANDIDIASIS , *CANDIDA albicans , *BLOOD proteins , *LABORATORY rats - Abstract
This study evaluated blood count, total plasma protein (TPP), blood culture and urine of Wistar rats (n=12) with experimental systemic candidiasis. The animals were inoculated with Candida albicans and monitored for 30 days. The collection of blood and urine was made during the autopsy. In red blood cell, was observed anemic in 11.1% and polycythemia in 44.4%, while the PPT were increased in 11.1% of rats. In the WBC, 88.9% had severe neutropenia and lymphopenia. The segmented neutrophils had increase in relative values (28-48%) in 66.7% of animals when compared to other experimental group (8-15%). The urine culture were positive in 33% and blood samples in 25%, only one animal with candida on urine had no positive blood cultures. The results demonstrate that the full blood count, the culture of blood and the culture of urine showed little value in specific diagnosis of experimental systemic candidiasis. Serial analyzes may increase the chances of positive blood and urine cultures, and thus enable the institution of early treatment that can benefit the patient, and thus improve prognosis. ALKALINE phosphatase , *BRONCHOALVEOLAR lavage , *RESPIRATORY diseases , *BLOOD testing , *LIQUID nitrogen - Abstract
The use of determining the enzymatic activities in the posterior respiratory tract as a diagnostic tool has already been demonstrated in several species. In this context, this paper aims to determine the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) of horses from the Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro, comparing healthy animals with asymptomatic carriers of an inflammatory airway disease (IAD). Twenty-eight adult male animals with no history of respiratory diseases in the last two months prior to the study were studied. Physical exam and blood laboratory test results (ALP, hematocrit, leukogram, total protein and plasma fi brinogen) were within physiological parameters. The equines were separated into two groups according to the results of the bronchoalveolar cytology. The determination of ALP was done by spectrophotometry with aliquots of the supernatant of the BAL preserved in liquid nitrogen. To estimate pulmonary epithelial lining fluid and ALP activity, correction of the dilution caused by the lavage was done. The horses with a cell type differential count compatible with IAD presented a lower ALP activity in BAL when compared to healthy animals, therefore this dosage can be used as a complement in the diagnosis of IAD. Based on the importance of milk production has for family farming of southwest of the "Paraná" state, a survey was conducted on biosafety in dairy herds on family farming in the region. This study consisted in a survey of knowledge of the family farming about the biosafety practices adopted in the properties. The research consisted in application of a questionnaire, made in locus for knowledge about the reality on the farms and to obtain the information about the research. The biosafety is impaired in surveyed properties, because despite all to do vaccinate in the animals, 89% combat rodents and 81% supply colostrum to calves, 36% provide mastitic milk and 61% milk from cows treated with antibiotics; 36% of the properties makes cattle replacement with outside animals, but only one performed blood test in the acquisition of these; in 24% of the properties there is not control in animals transit; 64% of the properties used artificial insemination, while 36% used only natural mating as reproductive method; 85% did not quarantine; 56% did not laboratory tests periodically; 48% did not have veterinarian or technician; did not worming schedule; but all performed the control of ectoparasites; in 88% there is not control of water quality; only 28% used gloves at birth; the cutting materials are not properly discarted in the most properties; 67% of these did not the isolation of animals; in 28% of the properties there was not an adequately sanitary destination of the carcasses of dead animals. The results this study showed that the many milk producers of family farming do not know the most of biosafety practices that should be applied to the dairy cattle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NEWBORN infants , *PSYCHOLOGICAL stress , *HYDROCORTISONE , *NORADRENALINE , *ADRENALINE , *BLOOD testing - Abstract
This experimental study evaluated the effects of the massage on stress in preterm neonates that were hospitalised in neonatal intermediate care units. The sample consisted of 32 healthy and clinically stable premature neonates, hospitalised in Portuguese units of intermediate neonatal care. The premature neonates were randomly distributed in two groups - control and experimental - with 16 neonates in each group. The groups did not display statistically significant differences in basic features, thus forming equivalent groups. During the study both groups received the same pattern of neonatal care, in addition, the experimental group also received the massage. Stress levels were evaluated by measuring the levels of cortisol, norepinephrine and epinephrine (neuroendocrine catecholamines) samples of blood and urine obtained on the first and last day of the study. There was no statistically significant difference in the levels of cortisol in the urine between groups or between the first and last day. As far as the levels of cortisol and urine are concerned, we evidenced that there are not significant differences between the groups or the moments and that both the effect of the interaction between the group and the time is not statistically significant Concerning the levels of cortisol in the blood, we verified that the effect of time is statistically significant with p <0.001. The levels of cortisol in the blood of the preterm neonates from both groups were identical at the two moments and a similar reduction occurred from the first to the second moment. In the experimental group as well as in the control group the differences from the first to the second moment are statistically significant whit p=0.001 and p=0.004, respectively. In regards to the levels of urinary norepinephrine, the effects of group, time, and interaction between the two variables were not statistically significant. As for the levels of norepinephrine in the blood, we verified the existence of a significant effect (p=0.040) in the group, however the effects of time or interaction were not significant. The experimental group demonstrated inferior levels of norepinephrine in the blood at all times; and the increase between the first moment to the second was statistically significant for the experimental group (p=0.002) and for the control group (p=0.004). Neither urinary or blood epinephrine levels varied in a statistically significant fashion when comparing groups, time, or the interaction between those two variables. We conclude that the effect of massage on the stress of healthy and medically stable preterm newborns admitted to neonatal intermediate care unit was not statistically significant. Small Ruminant Lentiviruses - SRLV (Caprine Arthritis - encephalitis - CAE and Maedi-Visna) infections are characterized by slow and progressive course, in which the majority of the animals do not present symptoms. Thus, the serological tests are the most practical diagnostic tool as the presence of antibodies indirectly indicates SRLV infection. This work was carried out with the objective of evaluating an agar gel micro-immunodifusion (micro-AGID) test in comparison with a macro-AGID test to be used in the serological diagnostic of SRLV in goats. In the micro- AGID, 10 µL of antigen and control serum and 30 µL of test serum were used; in the macro-AGID, 20 µL of sera and antigen were used. The tests were compared through the adjusted agreement index (Kappa - k) calculated according to 447 samples of goat serum from Pernambuco, Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte states. Of 447 samples, 63 (14.09%) and 60 (13.42%) were positive to micro-AGID and macro-AGID, respectively, corresponding to a significant agreement between the tests (k = 0.90). Furthermore, the micro-AGID presented clearer lines than the macro-AGID and the results may be recorded 24 earlier in micro-AGID. Thus, the micro-AGID may replace the macro-AGID in the serological SRL diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TOXICOLOGY of poisonous plants ,BLOOD proteins ,SHEEP as laboratory animals ,BLOOD testing ,IMMUNOGLOBULIN G ,GLYCOPROTEINS ,DENSITOMETRY - Abstract
In order to evaluate the serum protein concentration of sheep experimentally poisoned by Ipomoea asarifolia, four groups of five animals received diet with inclusion of 25% (G1), 50% (G2), 75% (G3) and 100% (G4) of the plant replacing to Pennisetum purpureum. Blood samples for serum protein concentration evaluation were collected at seven moments (M): before of the I. asarifolia supply (M1), and five (M2), ten (M3), 15 (M4), 20 (M5), 25 (M6) and 30 (M7) days after I. asarifolia supply. The serum concentration of total protein (TP) was measured through spectrophotometry and the protein fractions by means of eletrophoresis in poliacrylamide (SDS-PAGE). Twenty-nine to 31 proteins were detected by densitometric tracing, with molecular weights varying from 19,160 to 250,000 Dáltons (Da). Reduction of the transferrin concentration and increase of acid α1- glycoprotein level were verified in sheep that ingested 75% and 100% of the plant, immediately before dying. Also, reduction of concentration of IgG heavy chain was evident in M3 and M4, in G3 animals, as well as the level IgG light chain in M2, M3 and M4 of this group, suggesting interference in the immune function in poisoned sheep, especially in those with higher level of the plant on the diet. It is inferred that these proteins can be utilized as auxiliary indicators to diagnose intoxication by I. asarifolia [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dyslipidemia are alterations in the metabolism of lipids that trigger changes in the concentrations of plasma lipoproteins, favoring the development of disease. Laboratory evaluation of lipid profile allows identification of the presence and prevalence of dyslipidemia in childhood and adolescence. The objective of this study was to compare the lipid profile of high school students from public and private schools in Anapolis - GO. We invited 200 students from 14 to 18 years of age, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 110 (55%) of the students agreed to participate in the survey, 56 students from a public school and 54 students from a private school. Blood samples were collected by venipuncture and analysis of lipid profiles were performed in a private laboratory, using reagents from Labtest and automated equipment called Labmax by Progress ®. The data showed that 66.1% of public school students and 66.7% from private schools have at least one parameter altered lipid profile and levels of HDL cholesterol showed the most change. The knowledge of the lipid profile in children and adolescents is of fundamental importance for decisions to be made to improve the quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human accidents involving rattlesnake Caudisona durissa have the highest fatality rate among the Brazilian Viperidae family. Breeding this specie in captivity in order to produce antivenoms is very important to public health. Nevertheless, there are some challenges that this activity must face, like the onset of diseases on the breeding stock, justifying the importance of studying these snakes' physiology. Blood biochemical analysis of 53 Caudisona durissa was performed using plasma samples in an automated equipment (Ciba Corning - Express Plus®). Mean values and its respective Standard deviations are: blood urea nitrogen (BUN) -1.32mg dL-1 (±1.1); uric acid - 2.08mg dL-1 (±1.4); creatinine - 0.52mg dL-1 (±0.2); total protein - 3.7g dL-1 (±0.7); albumin - 1.62g dL-1 (±0.4); globulins - 2.08g dL-1 (±0.5); calcium - 15.25mg dL-1 (±2.8); phosphorus - 4.61mg dL-1 (±1.9); cholesterol - 171.58mg dL-1 (±52.7); triglycerides - 19.29mg dL-1 (±14.3); alkaline phosfatase - 31.04U L-1 (±12.4); aspartate aminotransferase (AST) - 22.25U L-1 (±11.4); alanin aminotransferase (ALT) 7.11U L-1 (±5.4); amylases - 1385.23U L-1 (±568.7). The following indexes were calculated: BUN/ creatinine ratio - 2.5 and calcium/phosphorus ratio -3.3. Rattlesnake blood biochemical results above could be used as reference in clinical evaluation for captivity C. durissa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study aimed to identify the effects of time, temperature of storage and excess of anticoagulant on hematological parameters of dogs. Blood samples of ten, clinically healthy dogs, of different breeds were utilized. Aliquots were stored with 1.8mg, 3.6mg, 7.2mg and 14.4mg of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) per mL of blood, divided into two groups: 2°C to 8ºC and room temperature. Right after collection, they were evaluated in four times: 0h, 12h, 24h and 48h. White blood cells, red blood cells, hemoglobin, packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), red cell distribution width (RDW), platelet and thrombocrit (PCT) were evaluated in the automatic cell counter. In the automatic cell counter analysis, the MCV increased significantly with higher concentrations of EDTA (7.2mg mL-1 and 14.4mg mL-1) peaking at 2.36%, in the highest concentration. Temperature and time also influenced the MCV, which showed a decrease in time 12 under temperature of 2ºC to 8ºC and an increase in time 24 and 48 at room temperature. Storage temperature influenced leukocytes and erythrocytes counts, which showed lower values at room temperature. Hemoglobin, PCV, platelet and PCT did not change significantly. The changes observed did not compromise the results obtained by automatic cell counter, showing that blood samples stored for two days remained in good condition for processing, especially when stored under refrigeration. Canine hepatozoonosis is a vector-borne disease caused by the protozoa Hepatozoon spp. There are few case reports in Brazil and the epidemiology, pathogenicity, vectors and molecular characterization is poorly understood. The present study used a canine presenting weight loss, regenerative anemia, neutropenia and hyperglobulinemia. Hepatozoon spp. gamonts were observed in the blood smear by microscopy. DNA was extracted from blood, and the diagnosis was confirmed by PCR assay. The PCR product was purified from gel and cloned. A fragment of 625bp was sequenced and submitted to the GenBank database as Isolate Porto Alegre. Molecular analysis showed a homology of 98-100% with Hepatozoon canis and less than 92% for H. americanum. This study represents the first molecular confirmation that H. canis is present in Southern Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The stretching exercise is usually used as a prophylactic way against damage in muscle induced by exercise. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of stretching after an resisted exercise in the serum concentration of creatine kinase, CK, in healthy subjects. Thirty six subjects, 18 men and 18 women were random into two groups. Control (C) and Stretching (A). The concentration of CK was measured prestretching and pos-stretching for the lower limbs. Immediately after the exercise, the group A participants have performed the active stretching, and then other three blood collection were taken with a break of 24 hours between them. Group A showed an increase in CK concentration 24 hours after exercise and group A men's CK concentration was different compared to the prestretching and in confrontation to the 24 hours measure of control group. The same behavior was not been observed in women CK levels in both groups. The exercise performed was not enough to cause micro lesions in musculoskeletal tissue, except in group A, wich is an indicative that stretching caused more muscle injuries. Stretching after resisted exercise demonstrated an induced effect of micro traumas in muscle tissue and that men were more likely to it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The chlorine is anion of bigger concentration in the extra cellular way and plays a role in the maintenance of the electrochemical neutrality of extra cellular fluid. This study it had the objective to verify the values of chlorine before and after half-ironman triathlon competition. Six volunteers had participated of the present study, with average age of 27 ± 6 years. There were submitted two blood samples collections, after eight hours dietary restriction (t= 0) and immediately to the ending of the competition of each athlete (t=1). The average time of test was of 4:58:19 ± 0:28:04 min. The values if had presented inside of normality. The plasmatic concentration of chlorine 103,70 e 107,00 mEq/L in T=0 e de 90,00 a 110,00 mEq/L in T=1 and the average values had been of 105,53±1,11 mEq/L em T=0 e de 99,50±8,47 mEq/L em T=1. These results, even so not statistic significant (P=0,160), had disclosed to a reduction of 5,68% in relation to the values of Chlorine before and after-competition. The competition time after did not present a significant correlation with chlorine concentration after the race (R= 0,028; P= 0,958). We conclude that after halfironman competition the concentration of chlorine presented a reduction no significant possibly due an excellent hydrolytic replacement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blood evidence consists of one of the most important forensic pieces. However, it is not always easy to identify a stain as blood. The best and fastest way of doing so, is by using rapid screening derived from immunochromatographic tests to spot hemoglobin. However, cross reaction between species might be an issue since hemoglobin of other animals could be present, especially considering crimes against fauna, outdoor crime scenes with an easy access for animals, and human and domestic animal trauma cases. According to the particular structure in each country there are private and/or public laboratories working in this field. Methods and resources from private and public sectors are different, and procedures also differ from country to country. The main objective of our work was to validate the presence of human blood using interspecific samples and the criteria defined by each lab using rapid blood detection test kits from the public sector related to forensic analysis in Brazil and from the private sector in Germany. As a secondary goal, we have evaluated sensibility, the Hook Effect and pH effect in some commercially available kits. Our results showed that the tests carried out are suitable for the detection of human blood in forensic samples using methods commonly employed in the public and private sectors.

The feline immunodeficiency (FIV) and the feline leukemia viruses (FeLV) are significant causers of serious, cureless diseases that commonly lead to patient's death. Both of these are cosmopolitan viruses with large prevalence in animals with street acess or those who live in large populations. Knowing these diseases prevalence in a population is important to diagnose and control them. Blood samples from 361 cats living at Distrito Federal were submitted to ELISA test to verify the presence of infection. The results showed that 3% of the tested animals were positively infected with FIV, 12% for FeLV and 2% for both retroviruses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INFECTIOUS disease transmission , *BLOOD testing , *VETERINARY medicine - Abstract
The Clinical Pathology Laboratory handles an average of 800 monthly hemograms. During the last years, there were no reports of microfilariae, though in the months of September and October of 2011, five cases were identified through blood smear. The results of the blood exams showed anemia, eosinophilia, and thrombocitopenia. Recife is a city which offers favorable conditions for transmission, thus it is paramount that knowledge of this zoonosis is furthered, due to its sporadic and asymptomatic cases diagnosed in the last months. We conclude that new studies are necessary on the occurrence of dirofilariasis in the state of Pernambuco, as well as for identifying the filarial species involved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cortisol levels reflect the activity of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system which responds to changes associated to stress. The measurement of cortisol in blood samples is usually performed to assess the functioning of the adrenal; however, the intense manipulation to obtain blood samples interferes with the results. In the search for alternative methods for assessment of cortisol, 63 feline saliva samples were obtained with special swabs and analyzed by enzyme immunoassay. Enough volume for the test was obtained in all samples and the average level detected was 1.92nmol/L, showing that the technique used is useful for stress evaluation in cats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eight dogs underwent two anesthetics, with 15 days interval for hematologic evaluation and to two groups: control (CG) and tramadol (GT). Propofol was used for the induction (10mg/kg) and maintenance of anesthesia (0.7 mg / kg / min). He began to pressure controlled ventilation. In GT, the animals received tramadol (2 mg / kg), followed by continuous infusion (0.5 mg / kg / h), while the GC, we administered sodium chloride solution 0.9% for the variables. A blood sample was collected before induction (Mbasal), 30 minutes after induction (M0) and at intervals of 30 minutes (M30 and M60). The statistical method was Profile analysis (p <0.05). Anesthesia caused a reduction of blood counts, hemoglobin and hematocrit, total leukocytes and lymphocytes. It is concluded that the association propofol and tramadol should be used with caution in dogs with potential immunosuppression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
