This paper aims to understand how the news in newspapers referring to the Workers’ Party (PT) in Ponta Grossa in the 1980s can be understood through Sentiment Analysis. In this sense, the journalistic publications of a certain spatial and temporal cut are analyzed, with the use of opinion mining techniques applying artificial intelligence to decipher aspects of natural language. We used the Syuzhet package included in Rbase, through the Rstudio interface, where we could verify that the positive emotions and feelings transmitted by the news published during the time under analysis, contributed to the electoral adhesion to the PT, electing members in the legislative and executive branches of the municipal government, a situation that had its share of influence in later decades in other spheres of the State. In this paper we try to make clear the path taken to reach our results, allowing the methodology to be applied to other printed periodicals and other themes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies news published in the newspaper Estado de São Paulo between 1969 and 2015 about transsexuality. The objectives consist in verifying the themes of the newspaper articles and identify the voices that are present, besides carrying out a characterization of the newspaper according to the assumption of communicative situation in Linguistics. The obtained results show an increase in the number of articles published over time, as well as the broadening of subjects covered. While in the first twenty years, only doctors and jurists talk about the theme, from 1990 onwards, transsexual people start to be heard by journalists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to refl ect upon the chronicles written by former soccer player Tostão, about the 2006’s World Cup, in the newspaper Folha de São Paulo. Thirteen chronicles of this newspaper plus another chronicles by the same author published in a book were used as sources, analyzed and interpreted by a historiographical and anthropological methodological point of view. It is noticeably from the narratives articulated by the chronicler and former soccer player that a variety of contents are explored, such as the dispute for power, corporeality and lack of courage due to moral issues to give meaning and elect the culprits among the Brazilian team for the failure in this competition. DISCOURSE analysis , *PUBLIC interest , *EVANGELICALISM , *NEWSPAPERS , *PUBLIC sphere , *ELECTRONIC newspapers - Abstract
This paper seeks to show a kind of representation of Evangelicalism by mainstream Brazilian press media outlets during the last decade, and how it has helped to build some ideas around that religious identity. The second purpose is to demonstrate that evangelical news media groups have reacted to such representation, and denounced the inability of the secular press to properly vocalize public interest. The paper employs Discourse Analysis resources and probes content published between 2007 and 2019 by secular media outlets (Época news magazine and Folha de São Paulo newspaper) as well as religious ones (Cristianismo Hoje news magazine and Gospel Prime website). Its findings reveal an emerging dispute around the sense of "public" by secular and religious news media groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyzes the emergence of the reporters' profession in the press in Rio de Janeiro between the 1880s and 1900s. For this purpose, statutes of associations, newspapers, and other periodicals like Almanak Laemmert were used, paying attention to the development of journalistic companies and the impact on the lives of their workers. In this scenario, the trajectory of the black and socialist reporter Gustavo de Lacerda is treated centrally in this research as part of the process of understanding the centrality of the reporter professional group in the foundation of the most expressive press organizations that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century, the Circulo dos Reporters and the Press Association. Drawing from the writings of Bakhtin and his Circle, in this paper we analyze on-line editorials published in Portuguese and in Spanish by the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and El País, during February 2020. By comparing productions of the same speech genre in different ethnolinguistic communities, we intend to broaden the understanding of the genre itself, of the functioning of the field in which it is inserted and of the way de addressee is represented, taking into account the specificities of the production, circulation and reception of utterances in digital media. Our analysis reveals a transition period in the journalistic field. In the newspapers compared, the editorials manifest the contradictions between different reading practices and try to incorporate, each one in its own way, the heterogeneity of the presumed reader. This paper aims to analyze narratives about African-Brazilian beliefs and cultural manifestations as shown in the printing press in Salvador, from 1920 to 1940. The main sources consulted were the newspapers Estado da Bahia, O Imparcial, A Tarde and Diário de Notícias. This timeframe comprehends the gradual change of perception of the press on those manifestations, when religious African-Brazilian festivities are consolidated as identity symbols of the city. The sources enabled the identification of memory homogeneities and discontinuities, as well as the factors of differentiation in the power correlations among groups separated by tenuous social-cultural and religious boundaries. This paper analyzes the relations between technodiscourse, interactivity and support in Instagram media in a theoretical intersection between Digital Discourse Analysis (Paveau, 2017), Communication Sciences (Jensen, 1998; Kiousis, 2002) and Textual Linguistics (Marcuschi, 2003, Gonçalves, 2013). The corpus is composed of screen copies of stories from the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã and the Brazilian newspaper Diário Catarinense published on Instagram. In this investigation, we verified that some aspects of technodiscourse, such as composition, delinearization, augmentation, and relationality are directly related to two levels of interactivity, the dialogic character and content control. Therefore, a degree of engagement of interlocutors in interactions with Instagram media are increased. We also verified that some variables of interactivity, such as the control of content and the dialogical character, change depending on the type of support through which the Instagram media is accessed, in order to stimulate the interlocutor to more direct and active actions in the construction of meanings. This research seeks to show the relevance of observing the characteristics of technodiscourse combined with the investigation of interactivity and support in the construction of meanings of Instagram stories. With this contribution, we seek to expand the studies that relate technodiscourse to modes of interaction with digital media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PRESIDENTIAL elections , *MASS media , *ELECTIONS , *PROPAGANDA , *VENEZUELANS , *NEWSPAPERS , *COMPARATIVE studies - Abstract
In this article, Chomsky & Herman's "propaganda model" was applied on the examination of the news coverage practiced by Brazilian mass media regarding the exclusion of candidates due to legal processes in the 2018 Brazilian and Venezuelan presidential elections. To this end, this research employs the chomskyan methodology of conducting a comparative study of the news content concerning the excluded candidates from each election produced by Brazilian newspaper O Estado de São Paulo between January 1st and May 31st of 2018. The analysis focused on: how the paper framed the matter in each case through representation techniques, the plurality of opinions presented, and how authors of opinion pieces positioned themselves. The results show that the newspaper's coverage corroborates claims of attacks on the freedom of candidacy in the Venezuelan election, whilst rejecting such claims in the Brazilian election. VICTIMS of violent crimes , *EX-presidents , *VIOLENCE , *BUSINESSMEN , *NEWSPAPERS - Abstract
This article aims at discussing dimensions of violence in three empirical scenarios in which physical and symbolic violence differently surfaced: an account of a female victim of violence about her attempt to press charges about threats made by her then husband; the comments by a businessman about the lack of value of the lives of favela residents in the context of the Covid-19 pandemics; a newspaper cover displaying the head of the former Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff on fire. The article builds on the concepts of scales, communicability and indexicality in order to render intelligible the ways in which violence was perceived and framed in the first context; in addition to how it virally spread in the second, and to how it participated in the semiotization and contextualization of an image in the third. Methodologically, the paper combines ethnographic and documental approaches, and applies them differently in each empirical context. In addition to providing a situated discussion of these three manifestations of violence, we point to modes of resistance to violence, some of which are inscribed in the very production of reflexive activity about the manifestation and effects of violence. Mainly, the relationship established between the literati and journalistic companies was under investigation, paying attention to the daily newspapers. Also, the attempts of defining journalism as a profession itself were analyzed in pair with the rising importance of the conception of labor to the literary production from lots of men of letters in the period. The poet, chronist, and journalist Olavo Bilac was one of the subjects followed with attention, including his literary personal projects as the illustrated magazines. POLITICAL news coverage , *SPANISH language , *NEWSPAPERS , *CONTENT analysis , *JOURNALISM , *ELECTRONIC newspapers , *ELECTIONS - Abstract
The election of Jair Bolsonaro for the presidency of Brazil in 2018 had repercussions worldwide. Important vehicles, such as The Economist and The New York Times, have dedicated a prime space to the political event. In this paper, however, the focus is on the coverage made by South American newspaper sites that speak Spanish language shortly after the announcement of the outcome of the election. For that, nine newspapers from different countries were selected and their texts were analyzed through Content Analysis, by Bardin (2011). Despite the variety of context-related themes, Jair Bolsonaro and the PT, the texts had more resemblance than differences in the way they dealt with the subject, showing that the south of Latin America - even without much dialogue between its peoples - follows relatively similar paths, including in journalism. This paper intends to debate the history of the Monumento à Colônia Afro-brasileira de Curitiba, unveiled at the downtown area of the Paranaense capital in May 1988. Departing from the concepts of "patrimony" (CHOAY, 2006) and "place of memory" (NORA, 1993), we analyzed how the insertion of this work in the urban space raises discussions on the identity and the memory of the city, as well as, on the relations between the individual and the collective on making the history of a population. The rescue of this history was also supported by researches in official documents, in newspapers and in interviews with people who took part in this process. This work brought to light how the monument has the potential to preserve the history and the memory of African-Brazilians in Curitiba. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TWENTY-first century , *POPULAR culture , *GROTESQUE , *POLICE , *NEWSPAPERS , *LAUGHTER - Abstract
The paper analyzes the representation of police and juridical authorities in Goiás, Brazil during the first decades of the twentieth century through anecdotes presented in the Catholic newspaper Santuario da Trindade, which circulated from 1922 to 1931. Some theoretical notions offered by Mikhail Bakhtin, such as the ideas of "world carnivalization" and "grotesque realism", are essential to ponder on the humor present in this newspaper, since those anecdotes mocked the police force's action, demonstrating what the author characterized as the irreverence of the popular culture in relation to serious institutions. In this sense, those jokes are discursive productions from the popular order of Goiás and they are susceptible to assorted interpretations. That is to say they can be understood not only as instruments of humor - a great way to ease up daily tensions - but also as exponents of a collective mentality, which reveals certain ways of thinking of the country culture regarding the juridical and police actions in Goiás. This paper analyzes the journalistic mediations built on the operation carried out by agents of São Paulo Civil and Military police at the city central region known as “Cracolândia”, in May 2017. The episode resulted in extensive coverage by press vehicles, which gave space to speeches by the mayor and police authorities, emphasizing the problem of public security and alleged economic losses resulting from the existence of Cracolândia. We focus on the coverage by Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo newspapers, considering there printed editions published in 22th May, 2017. From such frameworks, we intend to analyze, discursively, the representations of otherness constructed by the media in focus, discussing the (in) visibilities given to the Other. BACKGROUND: This paper deals with research inserted in the field of Sport History and interrelated with sociocultural studies. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the emergence of badminton in the city of Montes Claros, located in the north of Minas Gerais, from its first manifestations to its rise in the city. METHODS: An investigation was carried out in documentary and printed sources, such as local newspapers that reported various events related to badminton in Montes Claros, as well as printed documents provided by some badminton teachers and professionals present in the city. Such sources were submitted to documentary analysis. RESULTS: The first vestiges of badminton, in Montes Claros, date from 2007. Badminton had different local newspapers as cooperators for this practice, addressing different episodes in the region and allowing the conquest of space within the socio-cultural panorama of Minas Gerais. From this movement, the Montes Claros Badminton Association (ABdMOC) emerges, with the social objective of providing and encouraging the practice of badminton and parasports (parabadminton), in addition to sustaining the opportunity for a healthy sports practice. Then, with its expansion, the conception of the Badminton Team of the Athletic Association Banco do Brasil (AABB) was carried out, with a competitive sporting character, resulting in the contribution to the development of the practice in the region. CONCLUSION: Evidence of the first manifestations and increase of badminton in Montes Claros were identified, as well as the extent to which access to this cultural practice has been expanded over the last few years in the city, contributing to the local cultural development. Important collaborators who made and continue to make badminton expand and be appreciated have also been unveiled, which makes this study a pillar for future scientific research, due to the low number of historical and socio-cultural articles about badminton. Investigates the notions of past, present and future presented by the newspaper O Globo to broadcast the urban expansion of the city of Rio de Janeiro towards the area of Barra da Tijuca in the 1960s and1970s. It focuses on the use of words such as "progress". Such progress, nevertheless, intends to connect people back to the natural past of Rio: Barra da Tijuca emerges as a new way to live, which avoids the contamination of nature that took place in the neighborhood of Copacabana. The paper then argues that such model of urbanization combined with the logic of mass-media produces a narrative that ignores historical change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the theoretical framework of Textual-Interactive Grammar, this work discusses the recognition of a basically systematic linguistic unit in the field of the textual organization of language. Therefore, it investigates the Topic Organization in newspaper editorials of the state of São Paulo in 21st century, with the aim of evaluating if, in editorials, the internal structuring of minimal Topic Segments (SegTs), part of the Topic Organization, is configured as a systematic process, which can to be described according to a general rule of organization, or if is an essentially variable process. Using the method of topic analysis that enables the textual analysis based on the category of the discourse topic, the paper analyzes 25 editorials from newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo, and it shows that the minimal SegTs in the editorials are organized according with a single principle, that involves the potentially recursive combination of two units of intratopic organization - position and support, which allows arguing the text is highly regular, founded in own constitutive properties. The present paper aims to analyse some of the discourses and experiences on educational cinema during the first half of the 20th century in Portugal. The cinepedagogia («cinepedagogy») – as it is named in historical sources – embodies pedagogic activities that benefit from moving images. The use of cinema for education is discoursed since the first decades of the cinematograph, however, it was from the 1920s onwards that the discussion on educational cinema truly developed, and it lasted vividly until the 1950s. Along with a historical contextualisation of this movement in Portugal, the city of Porto was defined as a case study, for instigating the association of cinema and education prematurely and successfully. This research takes advantage of sources that usually aren’t used in the analysis of this phenomenon in Portugal: specialized publications in cinema, such as magazines and newspapers. These sources demonstrate the discussion regarding educational cinema and publicise the concretizations in this field. Therefore, the review of the Portuguese cinematographic magazines, along with bibliographic resources, was fundamental for this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper discusses criteria for the definition of what can be discussed by the public based on journalistic production of high visibility: newspapers first page. The object used to discuss this issue is the regional political leadership of the Paraná State (Jaime Lerner) at two different periods: from 1971 to 1975 and from 1988 to 1992. The comparative analysis aims to identify whether there are differences in the treatment given to him in these two moments: the first constrained by formal censorship that affected content published in newspapers, and the second during a period of full democracy. The newspaper analyzed is Gazeta do Povo, a major newspaper in Curitiba. Because it is the same governor, public office, and newspaper, the assumptions is that if there is a difference in treatment to Lerner, it is related to the restrictions imposed by the military regime to the press, that is, the restriction was determined by external political institutions. This paper examines the coverage of the "clash of order" in two traditional newspapers of Rio de Janeiro (Jornal do Brasil and O Dia) during the first hundred days in office of Mayor Eduardo Paes, who took office in January 2009. "Clash of order" is the name given by Rio de Janeiro's municipal government - and incorporated by those two newspapers - to the more visible public policy implemented during the first year of the administration. The discussion of that policy and its coverage is required by their relevant impact on part of the city's working population and the role played by newspapers in constructing and legitimating ways of being and acting in the urban space. As theoretical references, the paper discusses the notion of "criminalization" of poverty as it appears in the works of such authors as Zygmunt Bauman, Loïc Wacquant, Mike Davis and Marcelo Lopes de Souza. - Abstract
Interactive experiences online have been stimulating the development of public debate. Facebook, for example, has attracted citizens and institutions, as well as communication enterprises that see in this tool an opportunity for greater interaction with an audience. This paper identifies the characteristics of the debate among audiences in the official Facebook pages of the three main Brazilian newspapers (Folha de S.Paulo, O Estado de S.Paulo e O Globo) on the 2014 presidential election. Therefore, we have observed in 610.660 comments: 1) the debate's intensity over time; 2) the commentator's position (reciprocity); 3) justification; and 4) reflexivity. Among our main findings, one might highlight the predominance of monologues and the low level of justification. However, Facebook can be considered a space for persuasion, which prevailed in the comments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The military demobilization of allied troops stationed in Paraguay and the festivities and commemorations at the end of the War of the Triple Alliance were controversial subjects and occur in the documents produced by foreign embassies and by the press in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. The discussion formed the imagination of journalists and political disputes between liberals and conservatives in Brazil, between 1869 and 1870. Current paper simultaneously uses contemporary official documents and newspapers to demonstrate how the theme was forwarded by the government and by the press to Brazilian society. It will also be a great help for the writing of the history of the War against Paraguay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the analysis of the most visible and prominent issues in the brazilian newspapers during the election campaign of 2010. The concern with this media agenda assumes that the media should be considered as mediator between events and readers, especially when offering information that can be used as a basic role in shaping public opinion. For this research, we have collected all the texts from the first page, during the election period - July to October 2010 - of three brazilian newspapers of different scopes. Using a quantitative methodology of content analysis, this research allows us to understand which topics appear more often on the first page of each newspaper, that is also the most visible page, and the space that is occupied by each topic, as well as the text format, comparing the results obtained for these three daily newspapers. Foucaultian Discourse Analysis as a Research Methodological Tool. Based on Michel Foucault's work, this paper aims at operating with the notion of discourse as a research methodological tool. We selected the Jobs & Opportunities section from Zero Hora newspaper published in 2008, to analyze how the professional profile desired by the contemporary work market has been constituted in order to support neoliberal discourses as truths. The study was initially carried out considering the notion of discourse in a kind of laboratory so as to understand its potentiality. Later, we analyzed excerpts from newspapers by operating with one of the internal procedures of discourse - the author - regarded as a function that, rather than being an intellectual property, provides the text with coherence. This paper investigates the forms of representation of children and young people that stand out in three daily newspapers in Brazil and Portugal. We analyze seven editions of each of the following newspapers: the Brazilians Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo and the Portuguese Público. The research reveals that the publications show children and youth as an object of actions, i.e. they are absent from decision-makers arenas and they did not express their opinion. In addition, the representation of boys and girls as a population threatened by modern ills gains prominence, as well their image as autonomous consumers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper starts with discussions presented in foucauldian archaeogenealogy about the sexual device. It aims at outlining a discourse analysis of Lampião da Esquina newspaper (the first gay publication of wide circulation in political urban centers), defending the hypothesis of a problematic production movement of categorizations from male homosexuality and subjects who take part of it. Initially, we present a vanguardist discursivity that takes place in Brazil in the seventies, based on the values of equality and symmetry. Thereafter, we describe the discursive division that Lampião da Esquina promotes regarding homosexual publications based on hierarching criteria. Lastly, we precede to the analysis of the Newspaper, pointing out its discursive strategies of transformation and positive assumption of a new homosexuality, the separation between a normal male and an effeminate "abnormality". This paper proposes a analysis of the narrative models used by newspapers Diário de Pernambuco and Jornal do Commercio in the reports about a political scandal occurred during the municipal elections of 2004, in Recife City. The electoral dispute was between the parties PMDB and PT and their candidates. We have the assumption that the journalistic narrative structures, in some points similar to those used in literature, dramatize the events and remodel the politicians involved in the fact in characters. The use of those structures denies the myth of objectivity underpinned by the professional ideology of journalism, which sees the news as a faithful mirror of reality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ENVIRONMENTAL policy , *POLITICAL planning , *PUBLIC administration , *CONFLICT of laws , *POLICY sciences , *NEWSPAPERS - Abstract
This text observe how the newspaper Gazeta do Povo (Curitiba) addresses environmental public policies during the period 2000 to 2009. The policies are the result of the attention that the government provides for certain topics and the need for a large number of people, in which case the environmental theme was highlighted from the last decades of the twentieth century, when the environmental problems brought to the attention of society . In this scenario, the media act as a space for debate, where we can see to what extent it gives the public discussion on the subject and also as a way to schedule the public sphere. The paper presents empirical data that allow you to observe what the most common themes and moments in which development of these actions the media gives more attention and makes the cover. The initial hypothesis that guides the work is that the themes do not appear in a balanced way and the media coverage has also fragmented, addressing the issue only as a means of disseminating the government agenda and not the debate preceding the establishment of policies and in its assessment. In the present paper we wish to map out the representations made by journalists in the Brazilian media RBS Group concerning the agrarian land issue, taking MST (Agrarian Reform Peasants' Movement) as a theme in the pages of Zero Hora newspaper, and relating it to what we qualify as a "hegemonic representation matrix", historically constructed to this issue. We link this perspective to journalism theories, taking as a starting point the work of Traquina (2005), Lage (2005), Hall (2003), Zelizer (2000), Johnson (1999), Genro Filho (1987) and Tuchman (1978). We also wish to accomplish a study on the emission and productive processes in print journalism through a double or hybrid revision: through the lenses of British Cultural Studies; along with Journalism studies, highlighting the Newsmaking hypothesis. Our intention is to bring closer different theoretical methodologies in a fertile dialog allowing, perhaps, concept innovations in journalistic researches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
