The determination of the optical band gap energy ( E g ) is important for optimization of the generation of electron/hole pairs in semiconductor materials under illumination. For this purpose, the classical theory proposed by Kubelka and Munk (K-M) has been largely employed for the study of amorphous and polycrystalline materials. In this paper, the authors demonstrate, step by step, how to use the K-M function and apply it thoroughly to the determination of the E g of TiO2 semiconductor powder (pressed at different thicknesses) from diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) measurements. For the sample thicknesses 1–4 mm, E g values of 3.12–3.14 eV were obtained. With this work it is envisaged a clarification to the procedure of determination of the E g from the K-M theory and DRS data, since some drawbacks, and misconceptions have been identified in the recent literature. In particular, the widely used practice of determining the E g of a material directly from the K-M function is found to be inadequate.

Resumo Não há na literatura registros de estudos com o objetivo de desenvolver e avaliar o desempenho de arames tubulares com uma base de formulação celulósica para aplicações em campo sem a necessidade de emprego de gases de proteção. O objetivo deste trabalho foi produzir arames tubulares desta classe com adições de polímero para avaliar sua influência sobre a estabilidade do processo e propriedades do metal de solda. A avaliação dos arames demonstrou a viabilidade de produção dos consumíveis em escala piloto. Os metais de solda depositados pelos arames sem e com 7,5% de polímero apresentaram composição química comparável aos eletrodos revestidos celulósicos que serviram como fórmula base. Por sua vez, o arame tubular produzido com 15% de polímero apresentou redução significativa nos teores de C, Si e Mn. O hidrogênio difusível do metal de solda não apresentou alterações significativas para as fórmulas avaliadas. A macrografia dos cordões de solda não indicou presença de poros e as medidas de penetração apontaram um aumento desta em função da quantidade de polímero. A avaliação dos sinais elétricos demonstrou maior estabilidade na soldagem do arame tubular contendo maior quantidade de polímero. Abstract There are no papers describing the development and evaluation of self shielded cellulosic cored wires for field welds applications. The paper objective was to produce this consumable with polymer additions and evaluate its effect on the process stability of weld metal produced by cellulosic flux cored. The evaluation of cored wires showed the feasibility to make them at pilot plant. The chemical composition of weld metal produced by wire without (0,0%) or with 7,5% polymer match the cellulosic covered electrode composition which was the base formula. On the other hand, the 15% polymer cored wire presented in comparison with to the others consumables, substantial carbon, silicon and manganese content reduction. Evaluating the weld metal diffusible hydrogen content cannot be observed a variation as a function of polymer content. The weld bead macrographic analysis does not indicate porosity and the penetration improved as a consequence of polymer increasing. The electrical signal evaluation showed more arc stability as a result of polymer content increasing.

RESUMO Neste trabalho é apresentado uma revisão de um conjunto de sistemáticas para a estimativa de propriedades elasto-plásticas de materiais metálicos e cerâmicos pelo método de indentação instrumentada. As sistemáticas analisadas contemplam a metodologia de Oliver e Pharr original e com uma modificação da função de profundidade de contato de maneira a torná-la mais próxima das medições experimentais além de diferentes métodos analíticos baseados na energia de deformação (Stilwell e Tabor; Tuck Giannakopoulos e Suresh e Malzbender). Os resultados obtidos para o módulo de elasticidade e a dureza resultantes da aplicação das sistemáticas propostas foram comparados com os valores obtidos da literatura referentes ao aço inoxidável austenítico 316L, alumina e boreto de ferro e cromo. De modo geral os resultados encontrados para a dureza e módulo de elasticidade calculados utilizando as diferentes sistemáticas apresentaram boa coerência com os valores da literatura, entretanto algumas metodologias necessitaram de aplicações de fatores de correção para a caracterização correta das propriedades das amostras. ABSTRACT This paper presents a review of a different number of systematics for the estimation of elastoplastic properties of metallic and ceramic materials by instrumented indentation testing. The analyzed methodologies include Oliver and Pharr's original methodology and a modification of the contact depth function in order to make it closer to experimental measurements besides different analytical methods based on strain energy (Stilwell e Tabor; Tuck Giannakopoulos and Suresh and Malzbender). The results obtained for the Young’s modulus and hardness resulting from the application of the proposed methodologies were compared with the values obtained in the literature for the austenitic stainless steel 316L, aluminum oxide and iron chromium boride. In general, the results obtained for the hardness and modulus of elasticity calculated using the different systematics presented good coherence with the values of the literature, however some methodologies required the application of correction factors for the correct characterization of the properties of the samples.

Resumo Atualmente, no Brasil, as edificações residenciais devem atender condições mínimas de isolamento acústico, e, para tal, as características acústicas do sistema construtivo devem ser bem conhecidas. Para as condições de projeto, utilizam-se dados de isolamento acústico dos sistemas ensaiados em laboratório como valores de input em simulações computacionais, e assim estimar os resultados que poderão ser obtidos em ensaios em campo. Desse modo, este trabalho busca apresentar resultados de ruído aéreo e de impacto padronizado de diferentes sistemas construtivos ensaiados em uma mesma edificação, com foco na análise comparativa das diferentes áreas e geometrias e na estimativa obtida de softwares de predição acústica. Os ensaios foram realizados em edificações residenciais de acordo com as normas técnicas ISO 16283-1 e ISO 16283-2, e estimados com o uso do software SONarchitect. Uma análise da incerteza de medição a partir de uma série histórica de dados foi realizada para verificar se há influência da geometria na incerteza expandida. Verificou-se que parte dos ensaios de ruído aéreo apresentou resultados simulados com valor menor que os encontrados por meio de ensaio, e a incerteza de medição tende a um valor maior conforme o aumento do volume do cômodo ensaiado. Já para os ensaios de transmissão ao ruído de impacto, os valores estimados ficaram muito próximos dos resultados de ensaio, entretanto não foi possível relacionar a incerteza de medição com o volume do cômodo ensaiado. Abstract Currently in Brazil, residential buildings must be comply with basic acoustic insulation conditions, and in order to do that, the acoustic characteristics of the building system must be well known. For the design conditions, acoustic insulation data from laboratory tested systems are used as input values in computer simulations, thus estimating the results that can be obtained in field tests. This paper presents the results of air noise and standardised impact of different building systems tested in the same building, focusing on the comparative analysis of different areas and geometries and the estimation obtained from an acoustic prediction software. The tests were performed in residential buildings according to the technical standards ISO 16283-1 and ISO 16283-2 and estimated using the SONarchitect software. An analysis of measurement uncertainty from a historical data series was performed to verify whether geometry influences expanded uncertainty. It was verified that part of the air noise tests presented simulated results with smaller values than those found through the test, and measurement uncertainty tended to a higher value as the room volume increased. For the impact noise transmission tests, the estimated values were very close to the test results, however, it was not possible to relate the measurement uncertainty to the tested room volume.

RESUMO. O comportamento da região de estabilidade de sistemas dinâmicos sujeitos a variação de parâmetros é estudado neste artigo. O comportamento da região de estabilidade e de sua fronteira quando o sistema vai de encontro a uma bifurcação sela-nó do tipo-k, com k≥0 na fronteira da região de estabilidade é investigado. Uma caracterização completa da fronteira da região de estabilidade na vizinhança de um valor de bifurcação sela-nó do tipo-k, com k≥0 é apresentado neste artigo. ABSTRACT. The behavior of the stability region of dynamic systems subject to parameter variation is studied in this paper. The behavior of the stability region and its boundary when the system undergoes a type-k saddle-node bifurcation, with k≥0 on the stability boundary is investigated. A complete characterization of the stability boundary in the neighborhood of a type-k saddle-node bifurcation value, with k≥0 is presented in this paper.

Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) are a class of advanced composites with a gradual and continuously varying microstructural composition. This paper presents MicroFEA 1.0, which is a software package developed to help overcoming the challenges of designing and analyzing FGM structures. It provides capabilities to fit FGM experimental data to B-Spline curves and to analyze composite materials using mean-field micromechanics homogenization techniques. The package is composed of MATLAB scripts and Fortran subroutines intended for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using Abaqus. The Abaqus user-material subroutines (UMATs) are designed to work with heterogeneous materials at the integration points level, discarding the need for custom-designed elements. Thermomechanical analyses can also be carried out with the help of UTEMPs. This software will provide valuable help for scientists and engineers facing the development of new FGM structural components.

RESUMO: Este artigo propõe a instrumentalização do construto didático losango didático proposto por Méheut e Psillos como um guia para organizar a construção de sequências de ensino-aprendizagem a partir do delineamento de relações articuladoras. O losango didático é formado pelos eixos epistêmico e pedagógico, ligando os vértices professor, alunos, mundo material e conhecimento científico. Ocorre que a essência teórica do losango didático não sustenta um caráter instrumental que lhe permita transitar de forma clara e utilitária nos domínios escolares. Propomos relações articuladoras que oferecem suporte para design e desenvolvimento de sequências de ensino-aprendizagem. Ao promover o caráter instrumental do losango didático cria-se oportunidades para romper fronteiras disciplinares, promover atualização metodológica e mediar conhecimentos em um viés de participação ativa do aluno. RESUMEN: Este artículo propone la instrumentalización del constructo didáctico rombo didáctico propuesto por Méheut y Psillos, como una guía para organizar la construcción de secuencias de enseñanza-aprendizaje, a partir del delineamiento de relaciones articuladoras. El rombo didáctico está formado por los ejes epistémico y pedagógico, que unen los vértices profesor, alumnos, mundo material y conocimiento científico. Sin embargo, su esencia teórica no admite un carácter instrumental que le permita transitar de una manera clara y utilitaria en los dominios escolares. Proponemos relaciones articuladoras que apoyen el diseño y desarrollo de secuencias de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Cuando se promueve el carácter instrumental del rombo didáctico, se crean oportunidades para romper límites disciplinarios, promover la actualización metodológica y mediar el conocimiento en un sesgo de participación activa de los estudiantes. ABSTRACT: This paper proposes the use of the didactic construct didactic rhombus proposed by Méheut and Psillos as a guide for organizing the construction of teaching-learning sequences. The didactic rhombus is formed by the epistemic and pedagogical axes, covering the poles teacher, students, material world and scientific knowledge. The theoretical essence of the didactic rhombus does not support its effective application in the school domains. We formulated articulating relations that integrate and support the design and development of teaching-learning sequences. We argue that the use of the didactic rhombus creates opportunities to break disciplinary boundaries, to promote methodological updating of practice, to mediate knowledge towards students’ active participation and emancipatory innovation of teaching practice.

RESUMO Neste artigo foi proposto um modelo matemático simplificado para inferir sobre a capacidade erosiva de um escoamento lamoso em regime laminar com presença de roll waves (efeito pulsante) na superfície livre. Na perspectiva de aplicação de resultados no contexto de desastres naturais (corridas de lama), foi determinada a evolução da velocidade média e da tensão de cisalhamento no fundo do canal. O modelo proposto é baseado nas equações de águas rasas e na reologia de Herschel-Bulkley, como representativa das lamas. A validação e a aplicação do modelo foram feitas a partir de dados experimentais de roll waves geradas em canal no laboratório confrontados com resultados de simulações numéricas. Os resultados obtidos mostram um incremento na capacidade erosiva, na presença de roll waves, da ordem de 12% em relação ao escoamento base, valor este em concordância com os 10% apontados por Ng e Mei (1994) para uma reologia mais simplificada. ABSTRACT In this paper, we proposed and validated a simplified mathematical model to estimate the erosive capacity of a muddy laminar flow with roll waves (pulsating effect) on the free surface. From the perspective of applying results in the context of natural disasters (mudflows), the evolution of mean velocity and bottom shear stress in the channel were determined. The proposed model is based on shallow water equations and Herschel-Bulkley rheology as representative of the muds. The model was validated by comparison with results of numerical simulations and experimental data of roll waves generated in a channel. In-depth comparative analyses were made for inferring the erosive capacity of this sort of flow. The obtained results show an increase of erosive capacity (12%) due to the presence of roll waves in relation to the uniform flow’s. Similar values (10%) were found by Ng and Mei (1994) for a more simplified rheology model.

Resumo O artigo analisa semelhanças e singularidades da organização dos sistemas de ensino brasileiro e estadunidense, bem como seus marcos legais e arcabouços curriculares, ressaltando as possíveis orientações específicas sobre o ensino de matemática na formação laboral e, ainda, semelhanças e singularidades inerentes às necessidades, dificuldades e estratégias de formação matemática presentes na formação profissional de cursos técnicos. Para tanto, foi realizado um estudo comparativo entre duas instituições de educação profissional (brasileira e estadunidense) a partir de análises documentais e entrevistas. No trabalho descrevemos a estrutura dos sistemas educacionais e, ainda, a configuração da matemática nos currículos profissionalizantes, ressignificada a partir de situações-problema da formação profissional. Por fim, entre outros pontos, concluímos que a matemática pode se apresentar na educação profissional com estratégias formativas que resgatem e ampliem o entendimento das aplicações da matemática nutrida de sua compreensão conceitual. Abstract The article analyses similarities and singularities in the educational systems’ organization for Brazil and the United States, their legal benchmarks and curricular frameworks, and highlights in them guidelines concerning mathematics education within vocational education. For this end, we conducted a comparative study between two institutions of vocational education (Brazilian and American), using document analysis and interviews. The paper describes the structure of the two educational systems, and identifies the mathematics configuration as being reassigned with problems and situations from the context of careers. Finally, among other points, we conclude an approach should be used for mathematics education within professional, career, and technical education, which considers applications of mathematics to be embedded in conceptual understanding.

This paper describes a simple procedure for the study of the cooling of a spherical body, using a standard thermometer and a smartphone. For a more thorough analysis of the data, a computer can also be used. Experiments making use of smartphone sensors have been described before, contributing to an improved teaching of Classical Mechanics1-11, but rarely expand to Thermodynamics12-14. In this experiment, instead of using a smartphone camera to slow down a fast movement, we are using the device to speed up a slow process. For that we propose the use of FrameLapse free app15 to take periodic pictures (in the form of a time-lapse video) and then of VidAnalysis Free app16 to track the position of the mercury inside the thermometer, thus effortlessly monitoring the temperature of a cooling body

Solar energy has been considered as an important source of clean and safe energy to overcome the problems associate to the burn of fossil fuels (e.g. climate changes, pollution, health problems, etc.). In the area of photovoltaics, devices that convert solar energy into electricity, perovskites solar cells (PSC) have attracted great attention due to their rapid development, high energy conversion efficiency, diversification of the processing methods and different materials. The fantastic properties of the hybrid perovskite materials, such as high absorption coefficient, direct and tunable bandgap, ambipolar charge carrier, simple preparation, etc., have quoted this technology as one the most important in this century. The rapid development of PSC has provided a significant increase in energy conversion efficiency, which was first reported, in 2009, as 3.8% and now reaches up to 22.10%, according to the National Laboratory of Renewable Energy (NREL). Many studies have been carried out to further increase the efficiency of devices and solve problems as the instability of the material, and the presence of lead, so that the PSC can be applied commercially. This paper presents a review on PSC and the major advances reported in device’s architecture, preparation methods, novel materials and interface engineering.

RESUMO: A busca por novos materiais capazes de substituir, em parte, componentes do concreto tem alavancado pesquisas em diversas áreas, principalmente no que se refere à reciclagem de resíduos (construção, indústria e outros). Neste contexto, a utilização de isoladores elétricos de porcelana vem sendo estudada como uma possibilidade eficaz de substituição do agregado miúdo. Este trabalho, avaliou os efeitos da substituição de 25% e 50%, em relação ao agregado miúdo, utilizando um traço de 1:1,43:2,07:0,4 (cimento:agregado graúdo:agregado miúdo:água) e, através da caracterização física do resíduo, o mesmo foi classificado como areia grossa (influência do processo de moagem). Realizou-se ensaios de absorção (aos 28 dias), resistência à compressão e à tração. O ensaio de absorção comprovou que o isolador, mesmo tendo maior absorção do que a areia natural (0,56% e 0,34%, respectivamente) não interferiu no valor do abatimento do concreto. Os resultados de resistência à compressão mostraram uma melhora considerável com base nos dados obtidos, comprovando a eficácia da utilização deste material como substituição parcial dos agregados na composição do concreto.ABSTRACT: The search for new materials capable of partially replacing concrete components has leveraged research in a number of areas, particularly with regard to waste recycling (construction, industry and others). In this context, the use of porcelain electrical insulators has been studied as an effective possibility of replacing the small aggregate. In this paper evaluated the effects of 25% and 50% substitution in relation to the fine aggregate using a 1: 1: 43: 2.07: 0.4 (cement: aggregate coarse: fine aggregate: water). Through the physical characterization of the residue, the same was classified as coarse sand (influence of the grinding process). Absorption (at 28 days), compressive strength and tensile were performed. The absorption test showed that the insulator, although having a higher absorption than the natural sand (0.56% and 0.34%, respectively), did not interfere with the value of the slump test of concrete. The results of compressive strength showed a considerable improvement based on the data obtained, proving the effectiveness of the use of this material as partial replacement of the aggregates in the concrete composition.

Quantum dot solar cells (QDSC) have been subject of extensive research in recent years. QDSC, as a promising alternative to existing solar cells, are among the candidates for next-generation photovoltaic devices that require low cost, high efficiency, so that quantum dots stand out for their unique features and versatile desirable on photovoltaic systems. The rapid development of QDSC provided a significant increase in energy conversion efficiency, which was certified for the first time in 2010 as 2% then being currently as 11.3%, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This paper presents a review of the quantum dot-sensitized solar cells and the major advances reported concerning these cells, besides other types of cell architectures involving quantum dots.

Resumo O presente artigo tem como objetivo apresentar e analisar as respostas dos usuários de espaços urbanos abertos com relação à percepção do volume sonoro e à avaliação de conforto acústico, com base em dados coletados em campo durante o ano de 2013, em duas praças do município de Belo Horizonte, MG. Durante os levantamentos, dados acústicos foram medidos simultaneamente à aplicação de questionários, utilizados para coleta de variáveis subjetivas e individuais. O LAeq,T foi o índice utilizado para caracterização dos ambientes sonoros. Os resultados demonstram que, sob as mesmas condições acústicas, tanto no que diz respeito à percepção do volume sonoro quanto à avaliação de conforto acústico, os indivíduos tendem a ser mais tolerantes na praça que possui a melhor ambiência e as melhores condições de conforto térmico. As faixas de percepção do volume sonoro definidas neste estudo foram: Baixo, LAeq < 35 dB(A); Normal, 36 < LAeq < 67 dB(A); Alto, LAeq > 68 dB(A). Com relação à avaliação do conforto acústico, as faixas definidas foram: Confortável, LAeq < 67 dB(A); e Desconfortável, LAeq > 68 dB(A). Espera-se que esses resultados contribuam para um maior entendimento das questões relativas ao conforto acústico urbano. Abstract This aim of this paper is to present and analyse the responses of users of urban open spaces regarding perception of loudness and acoustic comfort evaluation, based on data collected during the year of 2013 in two squares in the city of Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. During field surveys, acoustic data were measured simultaneously with the application of questionnaires, which were used to collect subjective and individual variables. The LAeq, T index was used for the characterisation of the acoustic environment. The results show that, under the same acoustic conditions, regarding both the perception of loudness and the evaluation of acoustic comfort, individuals tend to be more tolerant in the square where the ambience and the thermal comfort conditions were better. As for the perception of loudness, the ranges defined in this study were: Low LAeq < 35 dB (A); Normal 36 < LAeq < 67dB (A); High LAeq > 68 dB (A). Regarding the evaluation of acoustic comfort, the ranges established were: Comfortable, LAeq < 67 dB (A); and Uncomfortable, LAeq > 68 dB (A). We hope that these results will contribute to a better understanding of the issues related to acoustic comfort in urban spaces.

Resumo Este trabalho avalia indícios de constrição do arco pelo isolamento elétrico e térmico por fluxos de óxidos de um componente na soldagem A-TIG de aços inoxidáveis austeníticos. Foram feitas filmagens do arco, medidas de sua tensão elétrica e da morfologia de cordões de solda obtidos com SiO2, Cr2O3 e Al2O3, aplicadas com duas densidades superficiais (30 e 60 g/m2) e aberturas centrais sem fluxo (1, 2 e 4 mm). Os resultados não mostraram mudança significativa na largura do arco nas condições utilizadas, não comprovando uma possível constrição mecânica no arco elétrico devido ao isolamento elétrico e térmico causado pelos fluxos. A filmagem lateral do arco indicou sua deflexão em sentido oposto ao de seu avanço para os três fluxos, sendo o efeito causado pela sílica o mais significativo. A abertura central sem fluxo reduziu a penetração, a área fundida do cordão e a largura do cordão. A ausência de indícios significativos de constrição do arco e a variação do formato do cordão de solda devido à abertura central sem fluxo favorecem o modelo da convecção de Marangoni como o mecanismo responsável pelo aumento de penetração na soldagem A-TIG de aços inoxidáveis austeníticos. Abstract This paper evaluates indications of arc constriction by the thermal and electrical insulation caused by oxides of a single component in A-TIG welding of austenitic stainless steels. Changes in arc dimensions, in its electric voltage and in weld bead morphology caused by three oxide fluxes (SiO2, Cr2O3 e Al2O3) applied with two surface densities (30 e 60 g/m2), and with and without a flux free central strip (of 1, 2, and 4 mm) were studied. Results showed no significant change in width of the electric arc for the experimental conditions used, therefore, not supporting a possible mechanical constriction in the electric arc by oxide electrical and thermal insulation. Lateral filming indicated that the arc is delayed by the fluxes with silica causing the strongest effect. The presence of clean central strip in the flux layer decreased weld penetration and weld bead cross section, besides the reduction of the width of the bead. Therefore, the results of the present work seem to support Marangoni convection as the main mechanism responsible for increasing penetration in A-TIG welding of stainless austenitic steels.

Esta interação dá origem aos denominados Plásmon-Poláritons de Superfície SPPs (da sigla em inglês Surface Plasmon-Polaritons), que são um tipo de quasipartícula resultante do acoplamento entre o fóton e o plásmon de superfície. A relação de dispersão dos SPPs é um conceito chave no entendimento da interação da luz com a matéria em estruturas nanométricas, com aplicações diversas nos campos da fotônica e da bioengenharia. Neste trabalho apresentamos em detalhes a dedução da relação de dispersão para o plásmon-poláriton de superfície para uma interface plana metal/dielétrico. Para as partes real e imaginária do vetor de onda ao longo da interface, deduzimos expressões gerais cujos casos particulares reproduzem resultados conhecidos na literatura. Em seguida é realizada uma discussão sobre o significado físico dos resultados obtidos. Por fim, utilizando o modelo de Drude, apresentamos uma expressão explícita para a relação de dispersão na forma frequência versus vetor de onda. Plasmonics is an emergent area of the nanophotonics that studies interaction between electromagnetic fields and free electrons in a metal on a metal/dielectric interface. Due to this interaction, the called surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) are generated. SPPs are electromagnetic excitations coupled to the collective oscillation of conduction electrons, which propagate along the interface between a conductor and a dielectric medium, with a broad range of applications, from photonics to bioengineering. One of the basic concepts related to SPPs is the dispersion relation, basic for understanding of the interaction between light and metallic nanostructures. In this paper we derive the dispersion relation of surface plasmon-polariton at planar interface and its fundamental properties are outlined.

Um sistema fotodetector para a sua utilização em medidas quantitativas da irradiância ou potência de um feixe de luz laser precisa ter uma resposta linear. Dispositivos com essa finalidade podem ser adquiridos comercialmente, mas possuem custo elevado. Nesta comunicação é proposta a construção de um sistema fotodetector a partir de um resistor dependente de luz (LDR), o qual é um elemento cuja resposta é não-linear. Nesse caso, para sua utilização necessitamos de uma calibração prévia do sistema. O desempenho do novo sistema em experiências de quantificação da potência da luz em condições estacionárias foi avaliada comparando o resultado da determinação da largura de um feixe de laser com perfil espacial gaussiano mediante a técnica da lâmina, com o obtido por um fotodetector comercial. A photodetector for using in quantitative measurements of the irradiance or power of a laser beam needs to have a linear response. Devices with this property can be acquired but usually they are expensive. In this paper we propose the construction of a photodetector that employs a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR), which has a nonlinear response. In this situation, for using such a photodetector it is necessary a previous calibration. The performance of the new system in experiments that need to quantify the radiant power in stationary conditions was evaluated by comparing the results of the measurement of the radius of a gaussian beam through the knife-edge technique, with the obtained with a commercial linear photodetector.

Os sensores inerciais MEMS de baixo custo apresentam grandes vantagens para diversas aplicações em navegação, porém estes dispositivos são caracterizados por diversos tipos de erros. Através de procedimentos específicos como a calibração é possível obter resultados com melhor acurácia. Neste artigo utilizou-se o Método de Calibração Multi-Posições Modificado, que permite determinar erros sistemáticos, tais como deriva, erro de fator de escala e de não-ortogonalidade. O método, o procedimento e as equações desta calibração são brevemente descritos. Primeiramente foi realizada a calibração com diferentes acelerômetros. O desempenho dos parâmetros de calibração foi verificado por meio de um teste em campo, comparando as trajetórias calculadas pelas acelerações antes e após as correções. Após a correção das acelerações com os parâmetros de calibração, foram verificadas algumas discrepâncias nas trajetórias. Ainda assim houve uma melhora significativa na solução final. A vantagem deste método consiste no fato de que este não requer o uso de equipamentos especiais ou de um preciso alinhamento dos sensores, podendo ser aplicado em campo antes da utilização dos sensores. The low-cost inertial sensors MEMS are very advantageous for several applications in navigation, however these devices are characterized by several types of errors. By performing specific procedures such as calibration it is possible to obtain results with better accuracy. In this paper, it has been used the Modified Multi-Position Calibration Method, which allows to determine systematic errors, like bias, scale factor error and misalignment of the axes error. This method, the procedure and the equations of this calibration are shortly described. First of all, a calibration of different accelerometers has been made. The performance of the calibration parameters was verified by a field test, comparing the trajectories calculated by the accelerations before and after the corrections. After correction of the accelerations with the calibration parameters, were verified some discrepancies in the trajectories. Still, there was a significant improvement in the final solution. The advantage of this method is that it does not require the use of special equipment or precise alignment of the sensors. It can be applied in the field before the use of the sensors

When Osborne and Burch [1] reported their observations of large-amplitude, long internal waves in the Andaman Sea that conform with theoretical results from the physics of nonlinear waves, a new research field on ocean waves was immediately set out. They described their findings in the frame of shallow-water solitary waves governed by the K-dV equation, which occur because of a balance between nonlinear cohesive and linear dispersive forces in a fluid. It was concluded that the internal waves in the Andaman Sea were solitons and that they evolved either from an initial waveform (over approximately constant water depth) or by a fission process (over variable water depth). Since then, there has been a great deal of progress in our understanding of Internal Solitary Waves (ISWs), or solitons in the ocean, particularly making use of satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems. While two layer models such as those used by Osborne and Burch[1] allow for propagation of fundamental mode (i.e. mode-1) ISWs, continuous stratification permits the existence of higher mode internal waves. It happens that the Andaman Sea stratification is characterized by two (or more) maxima in the vertical profile of the buoyancy frequency N(z), i.e. a double pycnocline, hence prone to the existence of mode-2 (or higher) internal waves. In this paper we report solitary-like internal waves with mode-2 vertical structure co-existing with the large well know mode-1 solitons. The mode-2 waves are identified in satellite SAR images (e.g. TerraSAR-X, Envisat, etc.) because of their distinct surface signature. While the SAR image intensity of mode-1 waves is characterized by bright, enhanced backscatter preceding dark reduced backscatter along the nonlinear internal wave propagation direction (in agreement with Alpers, 1985[2]), for mode-2 solitary wave structures, the polarity of the SAR signature is reversed and thus a dark reduced backscatter crest precedes a bright, enhanced backscatter feature in the propagation direction of the wave. The polarity of these mode-2 signatures changes because the location of the surface convergent and divergent zones is reversed in relation to mode-1 ISWs. Mode-2 ISWs are identified in many locations of the Andaman Sea, but here we focus on ISWs along the Ten Degree Channel which occur along-side large mode-1 ISWs. We discuss possible generation locations and mechanisms for both mode-1 and mode-2 ISWs along this stretch of the Andaman Sea, recurring to modeling of the ray pathways of internal tidal energy propagation, and the P. G. Baines[3] barotropic body force, which drives the generation of internal tides near the shallow water areas between the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. We consider three possible explanations for mode-2 solitary wave generation in the Andaman Sea: (1) impingement of an internal tidal beam on the pycnocline, itself emanating from critical bathymetry; (2) nonlinear disintegration of internal tide modes; (3) the lee wave forming mechanism to the west of a ridge during westward tidal flow out of the Andaman Sea (as originally proposed by Osborne and Burch for mode-1 ISWs). SAR evidence is of critical importance for examining those generation mechanisms.

RESUMO Este artigo apresenta a obtenção de uma ferrita de chumbo e cobre com a estrutura do espinélio, a caracterização da sua microestrutura e a determinação das suas propriedades magnéticas. A ferrita de cobre e chumbo é um material com baixa coercividade magnética e alta resistividade elétrica. Amostras com estequiometria PbxCu1-xFe2O4, (x = 0,00; 0,05; 0,10;0,15 e 0,20) foram sintetizadas pelo processo de metalurgia do pó e sinterizadas a 1000 °C por 6 h. Os resultados mostram que a amostra com x = 0,00 é formada pela estrutura do espinélio cúbico e x variando de 0,05 a 0,20 são formadas exclusivamente pela estrutura do espinélio tetragonal. As curvas de histerese mostram características de materiais magnéticos moles e a magnetização de saturação e temperatura de Curie diminuíram com a concentração de chumbo, no entanto observou-se o aumento do campo coercivo. ABSTRACT This paper presents to obtain a lead and copper ferrite with spinel structure, characterizing the microstructure and the determination of their magnetic properties. The copper and lead ferrite is a material with low magnetic coercivity, high electrical resistivity. Samples with stoichiometry PbxCu1-xFe2O4 with (x = 0.00; 0.05; 0.10; 0.15 e 0.20) were prepared by powder metallurgy processes and sintered at 1000 °C for 6 hours. The results show that sample with x = 0.00 is formed exclusively by the cubic spinel structure and samples with x between 0.05 to 0.20 are formed exclusively by the tetragonal spinel structure hysteresis loops show the characteristics of a soft magnetic material and the saturation magnetization and Curie temperature decreased with the lead concentration, however, noted that the increase in the coercive field.

During shock tests, data acquisition systems are normally required for measuring acceleration time histories and processing the shock response spectrum, or SRS. This paper presents a data acquisition and analysis system based on a computer sound card for measuring shock and characterizing the shock severity by its SRS. Since the tasks of shock data acquisition frequently require expensive hardware and software, this low cost system represents a very accurate and inexpensive solution for shock characterization. São discutidos nesse artigo alguns conceitos básicos relacionados ao clima espacial no ambiente próximo da Terra. Devido ao desenvolvimento tecnológico dos anos recentes, o clima espacial tornou-se um tema importante de pesquisa. Os avanços da área se devem principalmente à sua aplicabilidade nos sistemas tecnológicos tanto no espaço próximo quanto na superfície da Terra. Dentre os diversos temas abordados pelo clima espacial está a investigação de como perturbações no meio interplanetário, decorrentes da variabilidade solar, afetam o campo magnético da Terra. Os efeitos de tais variações podem ser observados em solo através de medidas de magnetômetros e no espaço próximo à Terra, por exemplo, as auroras. Alguns aspectos de uma perturbação solar em particular, a saber choques interplanetários, são brevemente revisados. Um evento real com atividade geomagnética intensa é simulado por um código magneto-hidrodinâmico (MHD). Resultados da simulação numérica concordam bem com dados observados por magnetômetros em solo. A importância de simulações globais MHD no desenvolvimento de modelos de previsão de clima espacial é enfatizada. It is discussed in this paper some basic concepts related to space weather in the near-Earth space environment. Due to technological developments in the past years, space weather has become an important subject of research. The achievements in this area are mainly related to its applicability to the safety of technological systems in space and on the ground. Among several subjects of space weather researchers' interest is the investigation of how perturbations in the interplanetary medium, as a consequence of solar variability, affect the Earth's magnetic field. The effects of such variabilities can be observed on the ground through measurements of magnetometers on the ground and in the near-Earth space environment, for example, the auroras. Some aspects of a particular case of solar disturbances, namely interplanetary shocks, are briefly reviewed. A real event with intense geomagnetic activity is simulated by a global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code. Simulation results agree well with ground magnetometer data. The importance of global MHD simulations in developing space weather prediction models is emphasized.

Resumo A Rebitagem por Fricção tem se demonstrado como alternativa para união de perfis de compósito termofixo aplicados na construção civil, frente às necessidades atuais por tecnologias eficientes de união de estruturas multimateriais. Nesse processo, a extremidade de um rebite metálico é plastificada e forjada dentro de um componente polimérico, via calor friccional. Sua viabilidade técnica já foi demonstrada para juntas de Ti-6Al-4V/poliéster termofixo reforçado com fibra de vidro. Este artigo tem como objetivo complementar esse estudo através da análise do efeito da velocidade de rotação do rebite na temperatura do processo, microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas locais e globais das juntas. Foram fabricadas juntas com dois níveis de velocidade de rotação: 9000 rpm e 10000 rpm (os demais parâmetros foram mantidos constantes). Temperaturas do processo (655-765 °C) superiores em 96% da temperatura de início de decomposição da matriz de poliéster (370 °C) foram atingidas, desencadeando degradação polimérica acentuada na região de união. O aumento da velocidade de rotação e, portanto, do aporte térmico, não contribuiu estatisticamente para o aumento na profundidade de penetração e na largura da extremidade deformada do rebite. Porém, a extensão da área polimérica degradada aumentou em 47%, a qual resultou em redução proporcional de 50% da resistência à tração das juntas (de 4,0 ± 1,2 kN para 2,0 ± 0,7 kN). Adicionalmente, mapas de microdureza no rebite evidenciaram possíveis transformações de fase da liga que favoreceram seu endurecimento, com o aumento da velocidade de rotação. Contudo, nenhuma correlação pôde ser evidenciada entre a dureza e o desempenho mecânico das juntas sob tração, já que as amostras falharam majoritariamente por arrancamento completo do rebite da placa de compósito. Portanto, no desenvolvimento de juntas rebitadas por fricção de Ti-6Al-4V/ poliéster termofixo reforçado com fibra de vidro, a otimização da velocidade de rotação é essencial para se obter suficiente deformação plástica do rebite e minimizar a extensão da degradação da matriz de poliéster, garantindo um satisfatório desempenho mecânico sob tração das juntas. Abstract Facing the actual demand for efficient joining technologies for multi-materials structures, Friction Riveting was shown to be an alternative joining technology for thermoset composite profiles in civil infrastructure. This process is based on plasticizing and deforming the tip of a rotating metallic rivet within a polymeric component through frictional heating. The feasibility of friction-riveted hybrid joints of Ti-6Al-4V/glass-fiber reinforced thermoset polyester was already demonstrated in a separate work. This paper complements this study by analyzing the rivet rotational speed effect on the process temperature, joint microstructure and the local and global mechanical properties of the joint. Joints were produced using two different levels of rotational speed: 9000 rpm and 10000 rpm (the other parameters were kept constant). The results showed process temperatures (655-765 °C) up to 96% higher than the onset decomposition temperature of the polyester matrix (370 °C); this led to severe degradation of the composite in the joint area. The increase in rotational speed, and therefore in heat generation, led to a statistically insignificant increase of the rivet penetration depth and the rivet diameter widening. However, the extension of the degraded composite area increased 47% which was responsible to deteriorate in 50% the joint tensile strength (from 4.0 ± 1.2 kN to 2.0 ± 0.7 kN). Moreover, the microhardness map of the joined rivet evidenced possible phase transformations in the alloy, favoring the material hardening by increasing in rotational speed. However, no correlations could be established between the changes in hardness and the joint tensile strength since the joints majority failure by full rivet pull-out. Thereby, for the improvement of friction-riveted Ti-6Al-4V/ glass-fiber reinforced thermoset polyester joints, the optimization of rotational speed is essential. This can guarantee the formation of efficient anchored joints and wider rivet tip deformation, concomitantly with the minimizing of the extension of the matrix degradation and finally leading to better tensile strength of the joints.

Varistores são elementos que fazem parte do sistema de transmissão e distribuição de energia elétrica ou de instalações elétricas especiais. Estes dispositivos são amplamente produzidos variando a escala, dependendo de sua aplicação, como dispositivos de baixa voltagem, com poucos grãos, exibindo ruptura de alguns volts, a vários kilovolts como usado em para-raios em rede de distribuição de energia. A física de operação dos varistores tem sido amplamente estudada e tem elementos comuns como barreiras Schottky formado na junção metal/semicondutor. Vários estudos têm sido desenvolvidos a fim de obter cerâmicas varistoras para aplicação em alta e baixa tensão. Dentre esses estudos encontram-se os varistores a base de ZnO, SnO2, TiO2 e mais recentemente os de WO3. Diferente das três composições citadas, os a base de WO3 apresentam comportamento varistor intrínseco devido a presença das fases monoclínica e triclínica. A adição de dopantes doadores e aceitadores de elétrons e o tratamento térmico em diferentes atmosferas também alteram as propiedades não lineares desses sistemas, uma vez que influencia na formação da barreira Schottky. Neste estudo foi realizada uma revisão sobre trabalhos relacionados a nova composição de cerâmica varistora a base de óxido de tungstênio (WO3). Varistors are elements that are part of electric power transmission and distribution systems or of special electrical installations. Varistors are manufactured in a wide variety of types, depending on their application, such as low-voltage devices with a layer of a few grains of thickness and low breakdown voltage, to varistors with a breakdown voltage of several kilovolts, such as those used in the lightning arresters of electric power distribution networks. Varistors, whose physical operation has been extensively studied, share common elements such as metal-semiconductor Schottky barrier junctions. Several studies have focused on the development of varistor ceramics for high and low voltage applications, including ZnO, SnO2, TiO2, and more recently, WO3-based ceramics. Unlike the first three compositions, WO3-based ceramics present an intrinsic varistor behavior because they contain monoclinic and triclinic phases. The addition of electron donor and acceptor dopants and heat treatments in different atmospheres also alter the non-linear properties of these systems, since they affect the formation of the Schottky barrier. This paper offers a review of the literature on the new varistor ceramic composition based on tungsten oxide (WO3).

Resumo Este trabalho trata-se de um estudo experimental do comportamento de propriedades termomecânicas de um compósito ativo, obtido através da introdução de diferentes frações volumétricas de fios de uma liga NiTi com efeito de memoria de forma em uma matriz polimérica reforçada com fibras de carbono (CFRP). Para tal estudo, inicialmente fez-se uma análise do módulo elástico de um pré preg de CFRP aeronáutico com diferentes posições de ângulo de fibras de carbono, a fim de determinar a matriz mais adequada para a introdução de fios de NiTi para obter compósito ativo. Verificou-se que a matriz com fibras alinhadas a 15º apresenta-se como uma boa opção para a obtenção de compósitos ativos, sendo utilizada para a fabricação de amostras de CFRP/NiTi. As amostras tiveram seu potencial de ativação avaliado através da análise da variação do módulo de elasticidade com o aumento da temperatura usando a técnica de Análise Dinâmico-Mecânica (DMA). Através dos resultados obtidos, verificou-se a capacidade de ativação dos compósitos CFRP/NiTi, os quais apresentam variação positiva de módulo de elasticidade ao serem aquecidos acima da temperatura de transformação dos fios NiTi. Abstract This paper is in an experimental study of the thermomechanical properties behavior of an active composite obtained by introducing different volumetric fractions of NiTi shape memory alloy wires into a reinforced carbon fiber polymer (CFRP) matrix. For this study, an initial analysis of an aeronautic CFRP pre-preg with different angle positions of carbon fibers was performed verifying the elastic modulus in order to determinate the more adequate matrix for introducing NiTi SMA wires to obtain active composites. It was found that the CFRP aligned with the carbon fibers at 15º presents with a good choice for obtaining active composite, being used to manufacture CFRP/NiTi samples. The samples had their activation potential confirmed by the change in elastic modulus with increasing temperature using the Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) technique. By obtained results, we verified the activation ability of the CFRP/NiTi composite, which show positive variation of elastic modulus when heated above transformation temperatures of the NiTi wires.

The present study aims to verify the effect of ozone gas (OZY® System) and high frequency electric pulse (Endox® System) systems on human root canals previously contaminated with Escherichia colilipopolysaccharide (LPS). Fifty single-rooted teeth had their dental crowns removed and root lengths standardized to 16 mm. The root canals were prepared up to #60 hand K-files and sterilized using gamma radiation with cobalt 60. The specimens were divided into the following five groups (n = 10) based on the disinfection protocol used: OZY® System, one 120-second-pulse (OZY 1p); OZY® System, four 24-second-pulses (OZY 4p); and Endox® System (ENDOX). Contaminated and non-contaminated canals were exposed only to apyrogenic water and used as positive (C+) and negative (C-) controls, respectively. LPS (O55:B55) was administered in all root canals except those belonging to group C-. After performing disinfection, LPS samples were collected from the canals using apyrogenic paper tips. Limulus Amoebocyte Lysate (LAL) was used to quantify the LPS levels, and the data obtained was analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The disinfection protocols used were unable to reduce the LPS levels significantly (p = 0.019). The use of ozone gas and high frequency electric pulses was not effective in eliminating LPS from the root canals.

Neste trabalho, nós consideramos um modelo derivado da densidade de um gás de Fermi em um estado superfluido BCS, aprisionado por uma rede óptica quase periódica unidimensional. Reduzindo a equação em 3D para 1D, construímos famílias de gaps sólitons estáveis (GSs) utilizando aproximações variacionais. No limite linear a aproximação variacional prediz exatamente a posição da banda de Bloch que separam os primeiros gaps. Através da aproximação variacional, mostramos a possibilidade de que a não linearidade efetiva atuando em combinação com o potencial de uma rede quase periódica em uma dimensão, permite o surgimento de gaps sólitons iluminados. Variando a amplitude da rede óptica, analisamos a existência e estabilidade dos gaps sólitons iluminados usando um ansatz gaussiano. Os gaps sólitons são estáveis diante de pequenas variações da rede óptica quase periódica. Este artigo pode ser utilizado como um guia de aprendizagem no estudo de átomos frios; estudantes são incentivados a realizarem os cálculos para outros valores de amplitude da rede óptica. In this work, we consider a model derived from energy density for a Fermi gas in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid state, trapped in a quasiperiodic one-dimensional optical lattice (OL). Reducing the equation to the 3D to 1D form, we construct families of stable 1D gap solitons (GSs) by the variational approximation (VA). In the linear limit, the VA predicts almost exact positions of narrow Bloch bands that separate the first gaps. Through the variational approximation, we show the possibility that the nonlinearity coefficient acting in a combination with the potential of the quasiperiodic one-dimensional optical lattice, allows one dimensional bright gap solitons to arise. Varying the amplitude of the optical lattice, we analyze the existence and stability of bright gap solitons using a gaussian ansatz. GSs are stable against small variations of the quasiperiodic optical lattice. This paper can be used as a learning guide in the study of cold atoms. Students are encouraged to perform variational calculations for other amplitude values of optical lattices.

Na soldagem de aço de baixo carbono podem ser empregados diversos consumíveis, como o arame tubular e o arame maciço. Este trabalho compara a taxa e a eficiência de deposição em função da corrente de soldagem, da distância do bico de contato à peça (DBCP) e do tipo de gás de proteção, comparando-se o ER70S-6 com o E71T-1C. As taxas de deposição foram medidas usando-se uma sequência de cordões de solda sobre chapa de aço. As frequências de destacamento das gotas foram medidas a partir de equipamento de aquisição de dados, baseando-se nas variações de tensão do arco. O diâmetro da gota foi calculado teoricamente com base na velocidade de alimentação do arame. Foi utilizado um programa para análise estatística dos resultados produzidos pelos experimentos. Os resultados mostraram que a taxa de deposição aumenta com o aumento da corrente e com o aumento da DBCP. Da mesma maneira, a variável mais importante para controlar a eficiência de deposição foi a natureza do consumível. O ER70S-6 apresentou uma maior eficiência de deposição que o arame tubular E71T-1C, como era esperado, uma vez que o arame tubular gera escória que não é contabilizada na massa do cordão depositado. In welding of low carbon steel, various consumables types can be employed. Among them, flux cored wire and solid wire have great application potential and substitution toward other consumables like coated electrode. This paper compares the deposition rate, the deposition efficiency, the frequency of detachment of the drop of molten metal addition and the diameter of the droplet of molten filler metal, as a function of welding parameters such as welding current, contact tip to work distance (CTWD), and the type of shielding gas, comparing the ER70S-6 with the E71T-1C filler metal. Deposition rates were measured using a sequence of three welds performed in bead on plate on ASTM A36 steel plate. The frequencies of filler metal droplets were computed from data acquisition equipment, based on variations of arc voltage. The drop diameter was theoretically calculated based upon the wire feed speed. For data analysis, a program for statistical analysis of the results produced by the experiments was used, which allowed to determine up to the second order interactions between the studied parameters. The results of the experiments show that the deposition rate increases with increase in current and with increase in CTWD. Likewise, the most important factor to control the deposition efficiency was the type of the consumable. The ER70S-6 presented a higher deposition efficiency than the flux cored wire E71T-1C, as expected, since the flux cored wire produces slag, which is not take into account in the mass of deposited bead.

Resumo Buracos negros clássicos, descritos pela relatividade geral, podem absorver partículas, mas não podem emiti-las. Entretanto efeitos quânticos fazem com que buracos negros passem a emitir partículas e comportem-se como um corpo com temperatura diretamente proporcional a κ, a gravidade superficial do buraco negro em questão. Este artigo tem o objetivo de desvendar a radiação Hawking, para o colapso esfericamente simétrico, servindo de motivação e apoio para estudos introdutórios em teoria quântica de campos em espaços curvos. Abstract In the classical theory of general relativity black holes can only absorb and not emit particles. However it is shown that quantum mechanical effects cause black holes to create and emit particles as if they were hot bodies with temperature proportional to κ, the surface gravity of the black hole. This paper has the main goal to unraveling Hawking radiation, for spherically symmetric collapse, serving as motivation and support to introductory studies in quantum field theory in curved space-times.

This paper is aimed at undergraduate students of physics, engineering and mathematics, where a methodology for mechanical vibration analysis of a multi degree of freedom (DOF) excited by an harmonic force in the time and frequency domain is presented. The Arduino microcontroller is used as an acquisition system and low-cost MEMS accelerometers for the instrumentation of the system. System of multi DOF are studied in a great number of problems in mechanical sciences, however its experimental study is not always present in the courses due to the high costs and complexity. These problems are overpassed with the study proposed in this work. Besides, the application presented has an interface with several disciplines in undergraduation and graduation level. The method proposed can be easy implemented and the results obtained had good precision and are in agreement with the literature.

This paper presents a qualitative analysis of the Coriolis force direction using the conservation of angular momentum and comparing it with quantitative calculation. In order to understand the implications of the theoretical expression for Coriolis force, we show the theory to students and teachers in a different way. When an object is on a rotating flat plate or rotating sphere (with constant angular velocity), has an associated tangential velocity due to rotation. If the object moves toward a larger (smaller) radius, in order to conserve angular momentum, there must be a force to reduce (increase) the tangential velocity. If the object moves parallel to tangential velocity, for angular momentum conservation, when tangential velocity increases (decreases) there must be a force which impels the object toward a larger (smaller) radius. Este trabalho apresenta uma análise qualitativa da direção da força de Coriolis usando a conservação do momento angular e comparando-a com cálculo quantitativo. A fim de compreender as implicações da expressão teórica para a força de Coriolis, se mostra a teoria de uma maneira distinta, para alunos e professores. Quando um objeto está sobre uma superficie plana ou uma esfera em rotaçao (com velocidade angular constante), possui uma velocidade tangencial devido à rotação. Se o objecto se move para um raio maior (menor), a fim de conservar o momento angular, deve haver uma força para reduzir (aumentar) a velocidade tangencial. Se o objeto se move paralelo à velocidade tangencial, por conservação do momento angular, quando aumenta (diminui) a velocidade tangencial (diminui) deve haver uma força impele o objeto para um raio maior (menor).
