Abstract: Authors from different countries have published their papers in English, aiming to promote their research results widely and to become internationally known by their peers. It is also true that, although they are aware of the English terminology used in their respective field, some authors still struggle with some features of academic writing such as collocations. Thus, this paper presents a discussion on the underuse and overuse traces of academic collocations by Brazilian authors who had their articles published in English on an open electronic library of scientific journals. In order to analyse the collocations used by these researchers, we compiled a 906,035-word corpus from eight different academic areas. The collocations observed were statistically compared to those from an academic corpus of English writings which contains texts produced by English-speaking authors. Results showed that there are more collocations underused than overused by the authors. The analysis proved that the collocation repertoire of researchers could be broadened by being pointed out during academic writing workshops. Resumo: Autores de vários países têm publicado seus artigos científicos em inglês com o intuito de promover amplamente os resultados de suas pesquisas dentre a comunidade científica internacional. É verdade que, embora estejam cientes da terminologia utilizada no respectivo campo de pesquisa, alguns autores ainda apresentam dificuldade em lidar com certas características da escrita acadêmica, como o uso das colocações. Este artigo apresenta uma discussão sobre traços de sobreuso e subuso de colocações acadêmicas utilizadas por autores brasileiros que têm seus artigos publicados em inglês numa plataforma eletrônica aberta de artigos científicos. Para analisar as colocações utilizadas por estes pesquisadores, compilamos um corpus de 906.000 palavras a partir de oito áreas científicas. As colocações analisadas foram comparadas estatisticamente com as colocações de um corpus acadêmico de inglês que contém textos escritos por autores anglófonos. Os resultados mostraram que há mais traços de subuso que sobreuso de colocações acadêmicas utilizadas pelos pesquisadores e este repertório poderia ser ampliado se fossem destacadas durante cursos de escrita acadêmica em língua inglesa. This study investigates the linguistic organization of the introduction sections of academic papers from the Veterinary Medicine field in terms of the two basic systems that determine how one clause is related to another: taxis (degree of interdependency) and logico-semantic relation (Halliday; Matthiessen, 2014, p. 438). All the clauses from the introduction sections of five published academic papers were analyzed. The results showed a high recurrence of simple clauses and embedded clauses in the corpus. In the clause complexes, the preference is for paratactic extensions. The results of this analysis may help understanding the functioning of academic writing in English language in this specific field.

This article seeks to contribute to the discussion about the role of online media in cases of public interest, in this case a financial political scandal (Thompson, 2001). For this, it was inquired into how it becomes visible (Thompson, 2001 & 2005), through Twitter, the link between the presidential candidate Sebastián Piñera and the scandal over tax havens, in particular, the case of the ‘Panama Papers’. The months of the presidential candidacy were set as the time limit, concluding in the first round of the presidential elections in Chile (between March 21 and November 19, 2017). It was concluded that on Twitter the scandal is visible through three main acts: discredit, face and take position, and two secondary acts, placed between them: unmask and federate. In this sense, social networks allow us to establish a space for questioning current democracies, for interaction with other “traditional” communication media, and ultimately to debate issues that affect citizens, as in this case the creation of Companies in tax havens by a former president and current presidential candidate. As Cardon (2010) points out, Internet expands the public space, transforming the nature of democracy.

Writing Studies scholars have raised concerns about framing student struggles to integrate secondary sources as an ethical problem of plagiarism. They propose, instead, framing student citation practices as transitional markers of development in which students use patchwriting to learn the discursive norms and values of academia. Patchwriting as a literacy tool for transfer of knowledge raised questions for me about whether students develop other scaffolds to aid in learning transfer. In this pilot study, I investigate student use of anchor sources, the “perfect source” that frames a student’s central argument, rhetorical structure, and/or purpose. Based on a random sample of a nationwide corpus of First-Year Writing research papers from 16 US institutions, findings show that 21 of 30 research papers (70%) revealed evidence of an anchor source. Six of the 9 papers without anchor sources show evidence of significant rhetorical problems. Results suggest evidence of knowledge transfer, as well as pedagogical implications for supporting this transitional stage in student development.

Resumo: Este artigo se propõe a analisar três tipos de estruturas sintáticas com o verbo acabar em português do Brasil: aquelas com o verbo acabar seguido de oração cujo verbo está no gerúndio (eu acabei escrevendo o artigo); aquelas em que o mesmo verbo é seguido de preposição por e oração infinitiva (eu acabei por escrever o artigo); e aquelas em que o verbo é seguido de um CP finito (acabou que eu escrevi o artigo). As três estruturas veiculam um sentido próximo: um conjunto de circunstâncias ou eventos subentendidos ou mencionados no contexto culminam ou causam o evento expresso pela oração que segue o verbo acabar, e nas três construções o verbo acabar comporta-se como típico verbo de alçamento. O trabalho defende que, no contexto sintático desses três tipos de complemento frasal, o significado da raiz do verbo acabar inclua um superevento, chamemo-lo S, que reúne o conjunto de circunstâncias ou eventos referidos acima, e estabelece que tal conjunto culmina ou causa o evento (ou um estado resultante ou associado a tal evento) veiculado pela oração complemento. O texto também mostra que os diferentes complementos frasais podem estabelecer relações temporais distintas entre a culminação do superevento S e o tempo do evento expresso pela oração subordinada, e também têm propriedades sintáticas distintas, como a possibilidade ou não de topicalizações ou focalização contrastiva dentro da oração subordinada, em sua periferia esquerda. Abstract: This article aims to analyze three types of syntactic structures with the verb acabar in Brazilian Portuguese: those with the verb acabar followed by a gerund clause (eu acabei escrevendo o artigo – I ended up writing the paper); those in which the same verb is followed by the preposition por and an infinitive clause (eu acabei por escrever o artigo – I ended up writing the paper (I finished for write the paper)); and those in which the verb is followed by a finite CP (acabou que eu escrevi o artigo – I ended up writing the paper (finished that I wrote the paper)). The three structures convey a close meaning, which includes a set of circumstances or events implied or mentioned in the context that culminates or causes the event expressed by the clause following the verb acabar, and in the three constructions the verb acabar behaves as a typical raising verb. The work argues that in the syntactic context of these three types of phrasal complement the meaning of the root of the verb acabar includes a superevent, let us call it S, which brings together the set of circumstances or events referred to above, and establishes that such set culminates or causes the event (or a state resulting or associated with such an event) conveyed by the complement clause. The paper also shows that the different phrasal complements can establish distinct temporal relationships between the culmination of the superevent S and the time of the event expressed by the subordinate clause, and also have distinct syntactic properties, such as the possibility of topicalization or contrastive focusing within the subordinate clause, in its left periphery. Este artigo aborda o futuro do trabalho como fenômeno comu-nicacional, por meio de sua análise como construção discursiva. Elegemos como objeto dois relatórios, dois documentos prospectivos: um assinado pelo World Economic Forum — talvez o maior porta-voz do capitalismo global — e outro da corporação Dell Technologies, expoente da economia digital mundial. Buscamos identificar de que forma esses discursos sobre o futuro do trabalho mobilizam códigos hegemônicos do neoliberalismo, compreendido como lógica social. Essa lógica pressupõe a produção de sujeitos, por meio de competências, perfis, como capital humano a ser gerido com eficácia. A metodologia é baseada na noção de discurso social de Angenot — que propõe a análise do espírito do tempo em sua disseminação nos discursos de dado contexto histórico e social.

In this paper, we depart from the hypothesis that face-work is an important dimension of the construction of discourse, regardless the register (oral or written). Drawing on the framework of Pragmatics, we argue that instances of nominalization can operate as politeness strategies, in the sense that they permit, on the one hand, the omission of the actor/agent of a given verbal event and, on the other hand, they contribute to establishing the boundaries of social distance and power relations, as a pervasive feature of formal texts. The empirical data analyzed in this study include academic papers taken from the Academic Corpus of Brazilian Portuguese (CAPB). In the academic papers analyzed, nominalizations operated, to a large degree, as a strategy to mitigate the potential attacks on the positive face of the author himself, acting, therefore, as a strategy of positive politeness.

From an interview made with a group of 18 researchers (9 from Linguistics, Letters and Arts Area/ CNPq and 9 from Agricultural Sciences Area/CNPq) we investigated similarities and differences, from the perspective of guiding teachers, in the conception of the interaction process between guiding teacher/guided student in the development of written scientific papers. The qualitative data analysis (quantitative was also considered), of interpretive nature, was based on indiciary method and the results showed that there are more similarities than differences between the two groups, although they are from Knowledge Areas considered very distinct.

Ancorada na perspectiva teórica da Análise do Discurso, na interface com a Filosofia e as Ciências Sociais, meu propósito, neste artigo, é pensar a circulação dos discursos sobre a leitura na internet. O corpus analisado se constitui de alguns excertos de relatos escritos por alunos de três cursos de graduação do Ensino Superior (Ciências Biológicas, Matemática, Pedagogia), os quais colocam em evidência a produção de discursividades sobre a leitura do texto-papel para o texto-tela, bem como a relação do sujeito-aluno-leitor com as "novas" tecnologias digitais no mundo contemporâneo e globalizado.Anchored in the theoretical perspective of Discourse Analysis at the interface with the Philosophy and Social Sciences, my purpose in this paper is to focus on discourses about reading on the internet. The corpus is composed of excerpts of stories written by students of three undergraduate courses (Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Education), which emphasize the production of discourses about reading the text-paper to text-screen as well as the relation of subject-student-reader with the "new" digital technologies in contemporary globalized world.

Os processos verbais são o foco de nossa análise para investigar a forma como o dizer é construído em artigos acadêmicos produzidos por alunos de Letras, compreendendo que a representação do dizer se faz por meio desses processos, os quais materializam "vozes" que corroboram opiniões, ideias e pensamentos, ao introduzirem o discurso direto e indireto. Propomo-nos, então, a averiguar, à luz da Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional, como os graduandos em Letras se apropriam deste tipo de processo para construírem seus artigos.Verbal processes are the focus of our analysis, which aims at investigating how the act of saying is built up in academic papers by students of Languages and Literature, bearing in mind that the representation of saying is carried by these processes, which materialize "voices" that introduce opinions, ideas and thoughts, in direct and indirect speech. Therefore we aim at investigating, following the principles of Systemic Functional Linguistics, how those students approach this kind of process to build their articles.

In this paper, we provide a brief description of the multidisciplinary domain of research called Natural Language Processing (NLP), which aims at enabling the computer to deal with natural languages. In accordance with this description, NLP is conceived as “human language engineering or technology”. Therefore, NLP requires consistent description of linguistic facts on every linguistic level: morphological, syntactic, semantic, and even the level of pragmatics and discourse. In addition to the linguistically-motivated conception of NLP, we emphasize the origin of such research field, the place occupied by NLP inside a multidisciplinary scenario, their objectives and challenges. Finally, we provide some remarks on the automatic processing of Brazilian Portuguese language. L'objectiu d'aquest treball és abordar la didàctica de la prosòdia des de dos punts de vista: en primer lloc, una perspectiva històrica i teòrica que examina el paper i tractament de la competència prosòdica; i, en segon lloc, les implicacions didàctiques i el desenvolupament d'aquesta competència a través del joc, tenint en compte a l'alumnat de l'aula d'Educació Infantil i d'Educació Primària.

Resenha do livro "Panoan language and linguistics", que apresenta um amplo panorama linguístico, histórico e cultural a respeito do conhecimento produzido sobre as línguas da família Pano.

Este volume da Revista Working Papers em Linguística é composto por dez textos escritos por pesquisadores de diversas instituições brasileiras, sobre fenômenos linguísticos de diferentes níveis de análise. Os três textos iniciais apresentam análises de fenômenos fonológicos, partindo de abordagens variacionistas e/ou geolinguísticas. Os dois artigos seguintes investigam fenômenos no nível morfossintático, um deles utiliza pressupostos teórico-metodológicos variacionistas e o outro pressupostos da Psicolinguística. O terceiro bloco conta com três textos que versam sobre fenômenos no âmbito da variação na sintaxe, combinando postulados da Teoria da Variação e Mudança, com alguns pressupostos da Teoria Gerativa. O nono texto apresenta resultados de coleta tecnicamente controlada para realização de análise fonética. Por fim, o texto que fecha o volume volta-se para o discurso, com base em conceitos e métodos da Análise do Discurso de linha francesa.

Intensifiers in English appear to be at the junction of grammar and lexis thanks to an unachieved process of grammaticalization. They are sometimes also subjected to pragmaticalization processes. This paper discusses the case of the intensifying adverb ‘really’. After laying down the theoretical framework used to analyze the various uses of this intensifying adverb, this paper presents the various uses of really through a corpus-based study. The focus is then put on the criteria that make ‘really’ a grammaticalized adverb before investigating to what extent it can be considered as an instance of pragmaticalization.

Globalization, technological advances, and new geopolitical organizations have impacted the political, economic, and social world systems, generating new ways of engaging with and “being” in the world. Higher education has responded to those changes by devoting efforts to internationalization, acknowledging its contribution to the quality of education and research. In this direction, this paper aims to provide a brief history of the internationalization of Brazilian Higher education, highlighting the language ideologies and policies that underlie the different historic moments, in order to establish the groundwork to propose a successful internationalization plan which is able to answer the demands of the present challenges faced by the Brazilian higher education institutions. Borrowing De Wit et al.’s (2015) conceptualization of internationalization, this paper reflects on some core elements that relate to who should be involved in the process, why and how it should be conducted and to whom it is aimed. Anchored in data provided by the methodological approach of a SWOT analysis, a five-dimension framework is proposed for the development of an institutional internationalization plan that can incorporate the complex variables that involve the process. The analysis developed demonstrates how language and internationalization are interconnected and how different perspectives of internationalization are associated with specific strategic languages. Furthermore, language is seen as a tool to promote internationalization at home, contributing to the internationalization of the curriculum for all, including students unable to go abroad. In this perspective, internationalization at home is viewed as an inclusive and equitable process. Language is also seen as a two-way channel: it values Brazilian identities and cultures while serving to participate in a globalized world. Finally, it acknowledges the fundamental role of language as a tool to welcome and value different cultures. In doing so, it helps individuals reconstruct their identities in new contexts and build a sense of belonging. This, in turn, enables the promotion of multiculturalism, fosters mutual respect, and facilitates cultural integration rather than cultural assimilation.

O reconhecimento de interfaces da Fonologia está vinculado ao próprio funcionamento do sistema linguístico, tanto em sua condição interna, a partir de uma interpretação estreita do termo interface, ao se considerarem as relações entre os componentes que constituem a língua, como em sua condição externa, em uma perspectiva ampla do termo, ao se considerar a relação entre esses componentes e os ramos da Linguística que estabelecem conexão com outras áreas do conhecimento. É incontestável que, em seu plano interno, nos sistemas linguísticos está incluída a existência de interseção entre os diferentes componentes, como o fonológico, o morfológico, o sintático e o semântico, e de muitas fronteiras, por vezes controversas, entre eles compartilhadas, como também, em seu plano externo, estão presentes dimensões de naturezas diversas, como a sócio-histórica, a antropológica, a psicológica, a clínica, a tecnológica, entre outras. A natureza multifacetada dos sistemas linguísticos é desafiadora e muitos são os linguistas brasileiros que enfrentam o jogo de voltar-se para fenômenos de interface no exame do funcionamento do português, um movimento inspirado pelas pesquisas de interface conduzidas na área nos últimos anos, consideradas como [...] the most intellectually engaging and challeging research [...] por Ramchand e Reiss (2007 p. 2). As mudanças teóricas e metodológicas pelas quais a Fonologia, como disciplina, vem passando, atestadas por Oostendorp et al. (2011), justificando a constatação desses autores de que estamos vivendo hoje [...] a very exciting time to be a phonologist (Oostendorp et al. 2011, p. xxxi), são motivadas, em grande parte, pela formulação de questões sobre a estrutura sonora das línguas que necessitam da aproximação de diferentes componentes da Linguística para serem respondidas de maneira eficiente. Com foco no componente fonológico da língua, as relações com a face fonética do sistema, com a realidade do funcionamento de estruturas morfológicas e sintáticas e com a sua representação na forma escrita são, por exemplo, temas de alguns estudos de interface. Outras pesquisas de interface voltam-se para a comparação entre diferentes fonologias ou para abordagens teóricas diferenciadas e seu poder explicativo diante de fatos fonológicos. Há também investigações que, em visões de interfaces, descrevem e analisam o comportamento da fonologia sob o viés de sua aquisição, como primeira ou segunda língua, ou de sua variação e mudança. Estas últimas visões são capazes de reunir fenômenos fonológicos e sociais, oferecendo o encaixamento social de fatos estruturais da língua. Têm-se, portanto, espécies de desdobramentos em abordagens de interfaces da fonologia, que tornam os estudos mais complexos e que também lhes podem atribuir maior alcance e maior interesse. É nesta visão ampla e multifacetada que estão situados os doze artigos que compõem este número da Working Papers em Linguística.

The change in politeness rules affects and reconfigures the treatment system of a given language. Finding scarce primary sources, such as the 16th and 17th century manuscripts, allows us to study, in addition to the forms of treatment, the formation of a new politeness agreement. This new agreement is based on a new society that began to be formed in American Portuguese.in the middle of the 16th century The indices of this new system are the forms vossa mercê and você. The arrangements made at the beginning of the colonization process affected the courtesy forms and functions of what would become the Brazilian Portuguese (BP), which are the reasons why this paper emphasizes the 16th and 17th centuries. We investigate in this article (a) manuscripts produced between 16th and 17th centuries that have never been analysed by the perspective of the Portuguese’s address system and (b) the use of vossa mercê and você in literary texts and in metalinguistic sources. In the end of the paper, final observations are made in the light of the proposed research. One of the contributions made by this study is the register of the terminus a quo of the word você, which dates from the year 1638. We argue for the interdisciplinarity of Philology, Paleography and Historical Linguistics studies and for the constitution of an effective dialogue between the state collective projects that investigate the BP history, considering its common socio-history.

This paper presents the C-ORAL-ESQ, a speech corpus of Brazilian patients with schizophrenia. The corpus will comprise 40 psychotherapy sessions with male and female patients, different age and schooling levels. The C-ORAL-ESQ will be segmented into utterances and intonation units based on a prosodic/pragmatic criterion that regards the utterance as a speech act (AUSTIN, 1962), i.e., a stretch of speech that is autonomous from the prosodic and pragmatic standpoint (CRESTI, 2000). Furthermore, this paper reports studies carried out by Cresti, Dovetto, and Rocha that have looked at informational structure in the speech of Italian patients with schizophrenia (CRESTI; DOVETTO; ROCHA, 2015). The authors have pointed out a tendency for some patients to produce utterances with less variability in terms of both illocutionary types and non-illocutionary tone units.

Beyond direct monetary considerations, the exploration underscores the unexpected role of language in business, influencing international trade, collaboration, and workplace dynamics. Advocating for the economic value of investing in language resources, the article urges decision-makers to recognize the economic dimensions of endangered languages. The conclusion calls for a shift in perspective, positioning languages not merely as cultural assets but as vital economic factors. It encourages the integration of language preservation into national and international policies to safeguard global linguistic diversity.

This paper describes the research project named MIXPAR, standing for "MIXed PARadigms", which was previously introduced in Štichauer (2022). The project aims to compile and investigate all published data to date about the phenomenon of mixed perfective auxiliation systems in Italo-Romance. The MIXPAR project represents a database developed following standardized principles currently implemented in a series of morphological lexicons. The article first explains the basic nature of these mixed paradigms, widely attested in a range of Italian dialects, where an intraparadigmatic alternation of two auxiliaries, avere/essere ('have/be'), is found, along with free variation and merged auxiliary forms such as jera, eva, and seva. The paper then introduces the individual parameters of the database, justifying their existence and discussing some of the associated issues. A long-format version of the database is presented, including variables for Cell, Verb/Construction, Class, Tense-aspect-mood paradigm, Auxiliary, Phonosyntactic doubling, Geographical information, Dialectal classification, Source, and Notes. It is concluded that the database will undoubtedly become a valuable tool despite the minor problems that will be resolved in due course.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, I analyse bilingual interactional practices in higher education in Brazil, focusing on Deaf students and, in particular, on their participation in academic literacy practices with the assistance of Sign Language interpreters. The paper draws on a study conducted within the undergraduate Linguistics program at a public university. As part of this study, I engaged in participant observation and interactional analysis in a classroom where three Deaf students were enrolled. The study was conducted within a theoretical and methodological framework consisting of ethnography as a logic of inquiry, recent writings on bilingual education for Deaf students, and literacy as a social practice (New Literacy Studies). My analysis of the specific challenges faced by these students in higher education is also situated within the wider educational policy context in Brazil and related to recent policy-making regarding democratising access to higher education for minoritized groups.

This paper presents a study of the Biblical names in regional and historical aspects. Throughout history the Bible has served as the most important religious book for many people. As a result, the Bible has had a significant impact on various aspects of culture, education, and traditions. Ukraine has been characterized by the use of the Biblical names since the adoption of Christianity which influenced on the whole history of the state. Since Biblical personal names are both the lexical units and the symbols, it is interesting to see the presence of these names in different regions and epochs. The present study aims at pointing out at regional aspects of Biblical personal names. The paper provides a brief overview of naming trends in the assignment of Biblical names and Christian names in Ukraine. Our database of all names was fed the names of 2,000 people. The material is taken from the list of students who studied at Odesa State Agrarian University from 2014-2024 with the help of a continuous sampling method. The methodology, both statistical and qualitative, had two phases: a) comparison of the ratio of Biblical names to non-Biblical names, and b) classification of discovered Biblical names. This research is just one aspect of a series of investigations whose goal is to describe the anthroponomical system of Odesa, Ukraine in diachronic and synchronic format. The findings suggest that personal names with Biblical origin continue to be widely used in Ukraine. We emphasize that the study of anthroponyms in different regions and epochs is a valuable tool for understanding the history and cultural traditions of Ukraine. Therefore, the importance of onomastics as an interdisciplinary science affecting History, Sociology, Theology, Literature, and regional studies in the research of the Biblical names in current and past Ukraine is shown. This study draws upon three theoretical frameworks: anthroponomastics (Felecan & Mihali, 2023; Piddubna, 2021, etc.), socio-onomastics (Ainiala, 2016; Beley, 2019, etc.), and the regional onomastics (Braychenko, 2019; Buga, 2013; Chuchka, 1970; Frai, 2021; Matsyuk, 2021; Sholia, 2018, etc.).

Although Anglicisms1 have been the subject of research for quite some time now, their definition in the literature sometimes tends to be somewhat inexplicit, and there are points of disagreement, especially regarding their classification and the distinction between their types. This paper advocates a uniform, consistent approach to defining loans (Anglicisms) and their typology in terms of an interplay between three criterial features which are transferred in, and thereby constitute, (lexical) borrowing: concept, model, and form. Their combination results in seven feature patterns or loan types (both mono- and bilingual), which the paper correlates and compares with standard categories of Anglicisms found in the literature and illustrates using examples from Czech

The paper examines the guidelines dedicated to Italian teaching and, above all, to the ideal thematic, language and stylistic features of school reading books in the programmes for primary school and in the related instructions for teachers issued by the Ministry of Education from 1860 to 1905: a decisive period for the arrangement of the Italian school system, the literacy processes and the spread of the national language. It can be seen how these official documents significantly shaped the writing of school books. The paper also explores the complex relationship between the institutional attempts to regulate textbook production, as evidenced by relevant ministerial documentation parallel to the programmes, and the rich publishing activity in this field. To complete the overview of the dialectic between school-educational publishing and the regulatory will of the Ministry and of the boards connected to it, responsible for the evaluation of textbooks, the witnesses of two prominent school female authors of the 2nd half of the 19th century are commented on: Ida Baccini and Felicita Morandi.

Este número temático da revista Working Papers em Linguística apresenta ao público uma amostra dos trabalhos desenvolvidos no país, bem como avanços de ordem teórico-metodoló- gica da Geolinguística brasileira. Ao todo, além dessa apresentação, constam desse volume uma entrevista com o pesquisador alemão Harald Thun, da Universidade de Kiel (Alemanha), e 15 artigos que recobrem diferentes temas, com análise de corpus e cartas linguísticas de atlas e/ou projetos de atlas linguísticos, englobando estudos de natureza fonética, prosódica e semântico-lexical, além de artigos de revisão da literatura na área da Dialetologia.

This paper aims to present some reflections on the textual constitution of the current textbooks. The discussed textbooks are for the 6th grade. As for the thematic content, each chapter presents key issues that need to be introduced and maintained, hence the relevance of processes such as referential continuity. Through the analysis of referential continuity strategies used in textbooks for elementary school, the aim of this paper is to verify how referential continuity occurs, and how the main / secondary topics are introduced and maintained, retaken, and recategorized in a way that is within the reach of the reader’s understanding.

This paper presents a new, digital, and interactive list of wounds, deaths, and other acts of aggression in the Iliad. After an introduction, it discusses the state of the art in quantitative approaches to the subject. The following section presents the methodology for compiling the data, briefly establishing the criteria for the distribution of instances in each category. In the discussion, I compare the results with previous similar projects and mention a few examples of the potentiality of the new list – to be published online, not included in the paper –, showing the advantages of the digital format.

This paper aims at investigating the segmentation and translation strategies used by human translators. The analysis is performed at the textual structure following the Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST). The corpus consists of thirteen synopses of films and their English-Portuguese versions made by undergraduate students of Translation. In the analysis, we investigated the frequency of agreement between text segmentation into elementary discourse units and compared the rhetorical structure of both the source text and the translations. The analysis allowed us to identify five different strategies and two inadequacies used by translators in the process of translating texts from English to Portuguese. The results show that human translators, unlike mechanical translators, promote inevitable transformations in the linguistic structures of the translated texts, which are the result of the translators’ relationship with both the foreign language and their first language. Because it is human, it distances itself from an ideal of perfection, as well as from a possible search for structural equivalences between languages that are, strictly speaking, different.

This paper reports on a contrastive study of Brazilian Portuguese um monte de NP and Moscow Standard Russian kucha NPgen quantifying binominal constructions, under a usage-based constructionist approach. To identify semantic specificities in both constructions, an empirical investigation based on collostructional analysis was conducted. The results indicate that despite some similarities between Portuguese and Russian in terms of cognitive operations involved in the conceptualization of the binominal quantifying constructions um monte de NP and kucha NPgen, there are specificities concerning each construction in each language in terms of semantic compatibility of lexemes co-occurring in them.

Este artigo traz um panorama dos estudos em sintaxe diacrônica no Brasil, que aliam a Teoria da Variação e Mudança com a Teoria Gerativa no estudo da mudança linguística. Apresentamos as linhas principais dos modelos de mudança sintática, o modelo da Sociolinguística Paramétrica e o modelo da Mudança pela Competição de Gramáticas. Além disso, abordamos alguns dos resultados de pesquisa para fenômenos sintáticos amplamente estudados no Brasil, como a ordem dos constituintes, a posição do sujeito e a colocação pronominal. Mostramos como cada um dos modelos interpretativos trata os fenômenos elencados. Por fim, apresentaremos os artigos que compõem o volume 22, número 2, da Revista Working Papers em Linguística, que trata de estudos de sintaxe diacrônica.

Coube a nós a desafiadora tarefa de entrevistar a professora Edair Maria Görski, nossa orientadora de mestrado e doutorado, parceira de publicações, projetos e eventos e homenageada nesta edição da revista Working Papers em Linguística. Procuramos lançar questionamentos que levassem a professora Edair a rememorar sua jornada como pesquisadora e que possibilitassem uma retomada dos principais temas que foram e são objeto de seu interesse. Entendemos que as respostas concedidas pela professora refletem sua sólida carreira na UFSC e seu olhar para a língua em uso, que integra multifuncionalidade, variação e mudança, considerando aspectos sociais, identitários/estilísticos e culturais constitutivos das línguas.

Este número especial da revista Working Papers em Linguística faz uma singela homenagem à querida professora Edair Maria Görski por sua relevante contribuição aos estudos sobre a língua em uso, relacionados em geral com a Sociolinguística Variacionista e com o Funcionalismo de vertente norte-americana e por seu envolvimento marcante em atividades de pesquisa, ensino e extensão na Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). A formação de inúmeros pesquisadores renomados que, atualmente, estão espalhados nas mais diversas universidades brasileiras é um de seus legados.

Translation assessment is an activity present in many scenarios and the diverse individuals who must deal with it partly explains the variability of such activity. Previous Translation Studies have already profiled and compared both the behaviour and the results of assessments carried out by a variety of evaluators. This paper examines the main contributions concerning this issue, and adds to the field by distinguishing between the contexts in which evaluators carry out their usual work and other less paradigmatic situations. The result is a compendium of the characteristics defining the prototypical evaluator profiles as well as presenting a warning for researchers, professionals, students and teachers on the special conditions that, depending on the circumstances, affect their evaluation and make it look as a different activity. The discussion includes complex formulas characterized by the collaboration of different groups of evaluators, as well as of those whose profile is not defined always by a single role. Therefore, the present paper may serve as an inspiration for new research investigating the profiles of evaluators to open the focus and take into account the circumstances that may affect their alleged habitual activity.

The provision of a translator’s paratext offers greater visibility to the translator and a direct source of information on his/her decisions and intentions. Osório de Oliveira, the translator of the Portuguese version of Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, replaces the author’s original preface with one of his own in which he justifies the alterations to the original text, whilst underlining that it was a Portuguese vessel on its way to Brazil which saved the hero from his desperate plight. This paper proposes to examine the reasons for Oliveira’s emphasis on this particular episode, to the detriment of others which were unquestionably more interesting within the context of the hero’s adventures. The date of publication of the translation – 1940 – and consequently of the paratext, provides the principal key to the answer, as the ideology of the Estado Novo was founded on the exaltation of the Portuguese “Discoveries”, underpinning a colonial policy which supposedly justified the retention of the “Overseas Provinces”. The paper discusses the translator’s reasons for intervening in the target text, whilst attempting to evaluate how far the paratext may have mediated the reception of a final version in which the deeds of past heroes were exploited in an attempt to appropriate Defoe’s story.

ABSTRACT Typical resultative constructions in English are unavailable in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and in Romance. This fact has been attributed by previous studies to different event-framings, following the Talmian view. English would illustrate the satellite-framing pattern, whereas Romance would illustrate the verb-framing pattern. Literature in BP has mainly focused on describing properties of different sentences similar to resultatives of the English type. A large part of the debate has been devoted to answering whether these can be classified as true resultatives. Much less attention has been dedicated to a proper description of the framing patterns in BP. This paper fills in this gap and, by doing so, argues that BP admits both framing patterns. The v-framing pattern is highly productive, exemplified by numerous complex parasynthetic verbs that entail a result. The s-framing pattern is marginal, illustrated by a small sample of modified resultatives and verb-particle constructions. This paper supports the framing analysis, but recasts its merits in light of new connections established among (apparent) resultatives in BP.

The widespread use of Pt. você and Sp. usted in America is a well-known fact. However, the explanation for their diachronic expansion is still a puzzling question. Given the fact that Pt. você and Sp. usted surfaced in Europe as late as the end of the 16th century, many authors wonder how these address pronouns could have spread over the whole colonial territories of Portugal and Spain, at a time when the colonization process was largely accomplished. The paper shows that this puzzling question is ill put. Pt. você and Sp. usted are reduced grammaticalized results of Late Medieval Pt. vossa mercê and Sp. vuestra merced. Both diachronic data and 20th century dialect data used for diachronic reconstruction show that an impressive bulk of reduced variants was in use already in the 16th century. The late fixing of one of these reduced forms, Pt. você / Sp. usted, is a simple matter of standardization. In this process, the colonial civil and military administration played an important role. In Portugal, the variants associated with the path vossa mercê > você were largely used in dialects, but ruled out by Lisbon’s elite. This is the reason why você is marginal in European Portuguese.
