Este artigo aborda o futuro do trabalho como fenômeno comu-nicacional, por meio de sua análise como construção discursiva. Elegemos como objeto dois relatórios, dois documentos prospectivos: um assinado pelo World Economic Forum — talvez o maior porta-voz do capitalismo global — e outro da corporação Dell Technologies, expoente da economia digital mundial. Buscamos identificar de que forma esses discursos sobre o futuro do trabalho mobilizam códigos hegemônicos do neoliberalismo, compreendido como lógica social. Essa lógica pressupõe a produção de sujeitos, por meio de competências, perfis, como capital humano a ser gerido com eficácia. A metodologia é baseada na noção de discurso social de Angenot — que propõe a análise do espírito do tempo em sua disseminação nos discursos de dado contexto histórico e social.

ABSTRACT Typical resultative constructions in English are unavailable in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and in Romance. This fact has been attributed by previous studies to different event-framings, following the Talmian view. English would illustrate the satellite-framing pattern, whereas Romance would illustrate the verb-framing pattern. Literature in BP has mainly focused on describing properties of different sentences similar to resultatives of the English type. A large part of the debate has been devoted to answering whether these can be classified as true resultatives. Much less attention has been dedicated to a proper description of the framing patterns in BP. This paper fills in this gap and, by doing so, argues that BP admits both framing patterns. The v-framing pattern is highly productive, exemplified by numerous complex parasynthetic verbs that entail a result. The s-framing pattern is marginal, illustrated by a small sample of modified resultatives and verb-particle constructions. This paper supports the framing analysis, but recasts its merits in light of new connections established among (apparent) resultatives in BP.

ABSTRACT This paper discusses the benefits of information and communications technology (ICT) in the contextual target situation analysis at a distance to design online critical English for academic purposes (CEAP) courses. A contextual investigation of the publishing process of high-impact journals in computer science is presented, which is aimed at identifying issues that might influence the publication of Brazilian researchers’ papers. The beliefs and experiences of Brazilian authors in the aforementioned process were analyzed through electronic questionnaires and remote interviews. Moreover, research articles’ reviews were studied to identify the community´s criteria for accepting or rejecting papers. Via ICT, a wider contextual analysis was possible with participants located in different parts of the world. Results provided relevant information about researching and publishing in the field, which may substantiate the design of tasks aimed at improving students’ critical academic literacy. For developing continental countries such as Brazil, saving time and resources through ICT in CEAP courses’ design means the possibility of investing in a more relevant instruction, which better attends to students’ contextual needs and wants.

ABSTRACT This paper aims to investigate practices in teacher education in the context of the Teletandem Brasil Project (Vassallo & Telles, 2006). Through web conferencing tools, the project pairs up Brazilian university students learning foreign languages with foreign university students learning Portuguese. The partnerships are supported by mediation sessions conducted by professors and researchers of the Teletandem Project. In this paper, we present some theoretical concepts related to telecollaboration (Belz, 2003; O’Dowd, 2007; 2018), besides providing a detailed description and comparison of four editions of preparatory courses for teletandem mediators, organized by researchers of the project. The results of the analysis may provide alternatives for teacher education in a context of growing transcultural connections.

ABSTRACT This paper discusses a collaborative action research project integrating a focus on ideological awareness with genre-based pedagogy in the university literacy classroom. Through explicit instruction on the argumentative genre and reflection on the linguistic correlates of neoliberal ideology, we guided students in developing enhanced awareness of neoliberalism and its influence on environmental policy. In the independent writing stage, students’ argumentation revealed critical stances towards neoliberalism and adequate command of the target genre. The paper closes with general reflections and recommendations for the adoption of an explicitly critical approach in university literacy education.

This paper proposes to think of another possible story told by photographs about the Revolt of 1924, understanding them as different narratives about the event in question. In this sense, it studies the transgression of the traditional concept of photography as a document of reality. It is observed that photography promotes another type of narrative that goes beyond the record as historical documentation. For this, the paper is based on concepts and reflections brought by various authors, such as Carlo Ginzburg on the concept of trail, François Dosse e Mauricio Lazzarato, about the concept of event, Joan Fontcuberta, Vilém Flusser and Walter Benjamin, who permeate the discussions about photography, Lucrécia D´Alessio Ferrara, on the issues related to communication, in addition to the bibliography on the Revolt of 1924.

The title of this paper is a play on words re-working the word democracy into demos-crazy. This re-working however is not a joke as the election of authoritarian illiberal candidates in the United States, the Philippines, Hungary, Turkey and Brazil (to name but a few) has called into question the future shape of politics. Electoral politics is under siege by new parties as well as spontaneous movements. There are fundamental questions which need to be addressed. What are the reasons for the rise of right-wing populism? Is populism undemocratic? What has been the role of social media and ICTs in helping to create a new political spectrum? Politically and socially what does it mean if we have entered a post-truth age? The demos has not become crazy but democracy is certainly in retreat. This paper argues that liberalism needs to construct an honest counter-narrative in contrast to the fear-mongering and false nostalgia of the right. The rhetoric of the right is opportunistic, but it would be a fatal mistake to dismiss its appeals. After all, it has won elections. The demos is not crazy, but has been ignored and in many cases left behind. Positive populism is grounded in human dignity and fairness. This is the essence of democracy.

This paper aims at investigating the imaginary of the sea and its marine creatures in Vilém Flusser’s thought, especially in his most peculiar book, Vampyroteuthis Infernalis. This essay uses the ocean as a poetic metaphor to express the universe of digital technologies and its contemporary technical flows. The paper’s goal is not only to show the radical originality of Flusser’s book but also to demonstrate its actuality and almost prophetic dimension by means of a dialogue with other contemporary themes and authors in the field of cultural theory. According to the reading suggested here, Vampyroteuthis Infernalis represents a fundamental philosophical reflection on the theme of identity in connection with technological devices and digital culture.

Feminism, motherhood and the media - historically close relations in review – We start from the premise that motherhood is a social construct increasingly linked to communication processes, especially in the voluptuous offer of advice and guidelines of what is to be a mother. Taking on from this idea, this paper seeks to situate such debate. Based on the main approaches about motherhood in feminist studies, the paper presents a state-focused approach of this research in Brazil, bringing attention to three thematic-theoretical axes and to potential topics yet to be explored in media and motherhood studies.

(What can) curatorial work create? - Considering the consolidation traces of the curator’s profession in the last decades, as well as the dissemination of its modus operandi for beyond the traditional field of art, this paper aims to identify the causes that lead us to speculate about the emergence of a possible curatorial language, which would consolidate whether as a reaction to internal transformations of art making, or due the influence of new media’s operational logic. By approaching different aspects of curatorial practices, this paper intends to outline some elements that allow to think critically about the curator’s symbolic autonomy.

This paper presents the exposure provided by Marie-France Begué to SIPLET (Permanent Interdisciplinary Seminar Literature, Aesthetics and Theology) around The Rule of Methaphor of Paul Ricoeur. In it, after a general introduction, are addressed in detail four of the studies in the book: the first, “Between Rhetoric and Poetics: Aristotle,”; the sixth, “The work of the likeness,”; the seventh, “Metaphor and reference”; and the eighth,” Metaphor and philosophical discourse”. The main objective of the paper was to provide an introduction to the thought of Ricoeur in this book, to the seminar participants according to the work they have been doing on the dialogue between poetry and mysticism.Key words: Paul Ricoeur, Rule Methaphor, Theology and Literature, Philosophy of Language.

The paper aims to reflect about the concept of anomy in Notes from Underground from Dostoievski analyzing the exacerbated individualism, constant dissatisfaction, a ethical and moral vacuum triggered by exercise of the ratio between other elements that can be understood as a social sin. In a theological approach the paper want to draw a parallel between the anomy as social sin and the consciousness of social sin as open to salvation trough love.Keywords: Anomie, social sin, nihilism, God

Lives, trajectories, frustrations, discoveries and verifications. These are some of the several sensations perceived when we research the daily writing. These narratives cannot been read as truth because we can feel the fictional intention in some of the autobiographical writings. Some of them were written during times of suffering, that’s why these reading bring to light some unspoken ghosts and pains, spread into the paper through a desperate writing. This situation tends to get worse when God himself participates in this dialogue, as we can read in the mystical diaries of some saints. In this paper, we want to deal with these questions looking inside Santa Teresa de los Andes Intimate Diary, a Chilean carmelite nun, canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1993. Teresa left an interesting personal archive compound of letters, notes and the most important – her Spiritual Diary. Published in Brazil only in 2000, we are going to use this publication in order to do our study theoretic conclusions.

Semiotics in music streaming environments: mind, learning and continuity – Based on the notions of agency (Deleuze and Guattari) and semiosis (Peirce), this paper discusses a study of the hybrid forms of interaction between interfaces and human agents in the music streaming environments LastFM, Grooveshark, and Deezer. The Peircean model of semiosis is taken as the conceptual framework to explain how the hybrid forms of agency interact at the interface between humans and machines. This paper proposes the notion of “semiotic agency” as a conceptual tool in the study of the learning processes whereby machines acquire knowledge about human preferences and decisions and are able to transform them into recommendations. The relationship of continuity between human minds and interface agents is discussed from the Peircean perspective of synechism and semiosis as a continuous process.

ABSTRACT One of the most popular semantic representation languages in Natural Language Processing (NLP) is Abstract Meaning Representation (AMR). This formalism encodes the meaning of single sentences in directed rooted graphs. For English, there is a large annotated corpus that provides qualitative and reusable data for building or improving existing NLP methods and applications. For building AMR corpora for non-English languages, including Brazilian Portuguese, automatic and manual strategies have been conducted. The automatic annotation methods are essentially based on the cross-linguistic alignment of parallel corpora and the inheritance of the AMR annotation. The manual strategies focus on adapting the AMR English guidelines to a target language. Both annotation strategies have to deal with some phenomena that are challenging. This paper explores in detail some characteristics of Portuguese for which the AMR model had to be adapted and introduces two annotated corpora: AMRNews, a corpus of 870 annotated sentences from journalistic texts, and OpiSums-PT-AMR, comprising 404 opinionated sentences in AMR.

This paper discusses the concepts in the work of the Czech-Brazilian philosopher Vilém Flusser (1920-1991), regarding the terms dialogue and discourse in the communication processes and it questions how these notions could be a resource for the study and the practice of comprehension. Based on the author’s autobiography (FLUSSER, 2007), published with the German title Bodenlos (with no ground or no foundation), this work investigates Flusser’s autodidactic background, which took a major influence in his life and in his work when in dialogue with a group of interlocutors, being eleven of them mentioned in the aforementioned book. This paper also includes the notions behind the (tense and comprehensive) dialogue with the world one lives in, the essay as a means to express ideas and speaking and writing as options for engagement. As well as Flusser’s goal was to provoke new thoughts and to amplify conversations; this text presents how his concepts could collaborate to a comprehensive epistemology of the Communication’s universe.

The paper analyzes how the lmmaker’s script makes a double- sided surface of the images of memory - such as the Moebius band - that goes from the inside to the outside, from the subjective experience to the social and historical experience.

In this paper we intend to identify an emergent discursive phenomenon in the city of São Paulo: the bike activism. It rises from a medley of disconnected voices towards an “articulated speech”, in the discursive eld about the meanings of the urban mobility. The bike activism constitutes a new subject position insofar as it defies, as an antagonism, the stabilized discourse related to the hegemony of the individual motorized transportation. The paper is divided into four sections: a) a description of the automobile city as a semantically normalized horizon; b) the conceptualization of politics as an articulation of speech, in Rancière terms; c) the discursive analysis of texts published in bike-mobility specialized websites; d) considerations about the partial re-absorption of the cycling into the symbolical equivalence chains of liberal-capitalism.

This paper analyzes the ways the photography (as a remembering device) is put into play in three recent movies of Brazilian cinema, understanding it as a trace of the presence of something that has already become absent. The aim is to discuss how images taken from family albums can support the narrative construction that unfolds the life of ordinary men and women, either realistic or imagined by the documentary. Moreover, based on different methodologies, this paper examines the political and aesthetical exercise of a lm-making. This analysis exposes the weaknesses and possible frustrations in the reconstruction of the remote (the character's point of view) and the unknown (the authors' point of view), even if the image in the act of remembrance is materially present.

ABSTRACT This paper discusses core principles such as play, collaboration, and agency that support the online workshops offered by the Global Play Brigade (GPB), an international community of activists from different areas, who got together to fight against the global crisis that threatened the world in so many ways due to the covid-19 pandemic. To exemplify part of the theoretical and methodological approach involved in the plan and, the workshop, as well as its goals, one of the sessions will be described along with perspectives aligned to Spinoza, Vygotsky, Freire, and some other authors to promote understanding of how people can be affected towards social change. It is known that there are many facets to the current turmoil, so the GPB seeks to create spaces in which creativity and critical thinking can create possibilities for emotional support, development, hope, and action.

ABSTRACT Answering Cavalcanti’s (2006) call to an Applied Linguistics enacted at its interfaces with other disciplines, in this paper we are inspired by an other globalisation, a concept coined by the geographer Milton Santos. Having the internationalisation of higher education as a process that embraces both of our studies, we look at it with suspicion in order to start framing an other internationalisation. To pursue that, we present two narrative scenes that took place at University of Campinas with undergraduate international students pertaining to different academic mobility programs who were learning/learned Portuguese as an Additional Language (PAL). These narratives index evaluations about the internationalisation process at the university and, in our view, reflect limited experiences of reterritorialisation from different angles. Considering the localities of the context, we propose some lessons to be learned and enacted towards an other internationalisation, including some more specific lessons oriented towards PAL policy.

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to offer some remarks on the important contribution of Prof. Marilda Cavalcanti to the development of the academic discipline called ‘Applied Linguistics’ in Brazil. It seeks to pay tribute to this great scholar and researcher for her pioneering spirit and dedication to the consolidation of the discipline in the Brazilian academic scenario, all too often in what appeared to many to be a gesture of rowing against the tide. After presenting a brief round-up of the challenges encountered by the pioneers and their tireless efforts to rid the field of the chokehold put on it by the so-called ‘theoretical’ linguistics, historically its ‘elder sister’, the text also proceeds to look at the ‘north-south’ stand-off that our researchers have been subjected to by their colleagues from the north, who still have difficulty in recognising that academic work of excellence can be carried out in our neck of the woods without the blessing or tutelage of whomsoever.

ABSTRACT Analyzing data from a project carried out during the Covid-19 pandemics, this paper is motivated by the viable transformation that the history of a student with specific intellectual educational needs (SIEN) - and the understanding that the educators working with him have of this history - allow for a prospective view of teaching-learning, that focuses on possibilities rather than the determinations, which would be the emphasis of a more linear, banking view of teaching-learning (Freire, 1970) and development. It is based on multiple theoretical backgrounds, i.e., discussions about specific intellectual educational needs (Fidalgo & Carvalho, 2020; Carvalho et al., in print; Fidalgo & Magalhães, 2017), critical-collaborative research methodology (Magalhães, 2011, 2018; Magalhães & Fidalgo, 2019), multiliteracies (Magalhães & Carrijo, 2019), transformative agency (Ninin & Magalhães, 2017) - all of which are organized within the Cultural-Historical Theory (Vygotsky, 1924-1934/1993).

ABSTRACT Although Brazilian Sign Language - Libras - was legally recognized in 2002 as the national language for deaf people, their access to interpreted information (i.e., information in their own language), especially in the media, is still very precarious. In the context of the pandemic, having access to information and guidance in one’s first language can be decisive in caring for and maintaining life. With this in mind, this paper aims at pointing out the barriers experienced by deaf people in Brazil, considering the absence of Brazilian Sign Language translators and interpreters in mainstream journalism and in channels of organizations that are responsible for explanations and guidelines regarding care and prevention. We also seek to reflect about the socio-emotional effects caused by the lack of clear information, and how this may risk causing excessive concern and panic. In order to achieve that, we adopt a qualitative perspective of investigation stemming from the collection of testimonies from deaf people about their experiences in the context of the pandemic. The testimonials, collected by means of a semi-structured questionnaire, allowed us to point out the urgency for greater accessibility in the media context, and the risks resulting from the absence of accurate information both for deaf and hearing people.

ABSTRACT This paper views classroom interaction as integral to the production of academic writing. It presents a situated account of how two L2 master’s students’ experienced spoken interaction on two different courses, extracted from a small-scale 13-month ethnographic study which drew on Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic capital (1991), and Goffman’s participation framework (1981). Triangulation of classroom observation data with student interviews reveals how interaction is framed by the two research participants’ courses and to what extent interactive events are tied to specific goals related to written assignments. Findings echo existing research that language proficiency, familiarity with norms, and power relations intersect in rendering interaction problematic. I discuss recommendations for enhancing interaction in course design and pedagogy; rather than trans-contextual solutions, constructivist evaluation studies of specific courses are needed which reflect voices of all participants.

ABSTRACT L2 writers tend to have difficulties in using reporting verbs (Bloch, 2010) because the choosing of reporting verb needs some considerations: the stance of the author whose claims are being reported, the stance of the writer, and the interpretation of the writer (Thompson and Ye, 1991). This article explores stance-taking in reporting verbs in the context of citations in undergraduate theses written by Mexican students in English as a Foreign Language. The corpus consists of thirty undergraduate theses written by non-native speakers of English in the field of English Language Teaching. I use corpus linguistics tools, i.e., concordances for the analysis of stance-taking which makes the expressions observable in their context. The findings show that undergraduates use reporting verbs to express their stance in their theses and that this varies depending on the chapter. This paper suggests a category of reporting verbs that is commonly used in EFL academic writing within the ELT discipline. I propose some educational implications, stressing the need to make students and their instructors aware that the choice of reporting verbs is not just a matter of stylistic choice, but it can be an expression of authorial identity.

The 2010 remake of the horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street focuses on the earthly abuses committed by the now confirmed pedophile Freddy Krueger. The fact that the victims of Krueger’s sexual assaults start get- ting murdered in their sleep is relevant to the trauma studies, as nightmares are one of the most common symptoms observed in people diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Therefore, one of the goals of this paper is to analyze the ways in which trauma is portrayed in the movie. Considering that the teenagers can only overcome Krueger — and therefore, their trauma — once they are able to witness the terrible events of their past, this work also aims at observing and discussing the trajectory that allows the protagonists to survive. In order to meet these goals, some central concepts to trauma theory are presented and discussed in relation to their portrayal in the film. The analysis shows that the main character Nancy can only defeat Krueger once she knows everything that has happened in the past and is able to have agency in the story.

ABSTRACT This paper proposes a Critical Genre Analysis (CGA) (Motta-Roth, 2006; 2008a; 2008b) of the English Language test on the Brazilian National High School Exam (EL-ENEM), to, ultimately, discuss the language conception that underlies this test. The corpus of the analysis was composed of eight samples of the EL-ENEM genre. The results point out that EL-ENEM items provide the test takers with a contextualization about their reference texts. This contextualization, in most items, provide information regarding the genres of the reference texts. The items, then, demand the test takers to identify different types of information in the reference texts. The types of information that are demanded the most refer to the text’s content, objective, and topic. This way, the test takers must activate knowledge related to Semantics and Pragmatics, Register (context of situation) and Genre (context of culture), indicating a direction to the view of language as genre, adopted by the official documents that guide ENEM’s design.

ABSTRACT The French clitic pro-form en represents a wide range of heterogeneous constituents: de-PP complements and adjuncts, partitive objects, and prepositionless objects of cardinals. The main goal of this paper is to formalize this relationship computationally in terms of genitive case. This is apparently the first non-transformational counterpart to Kayne (1975)’s unified analysis, which derives en from a deep structure with de by means of syntactic transformations. Transformational grammars are problematic from the parsing perspective. In order to test our analysis automatically on a large amount of data, we implemented it in a computational grammar of French in the Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) formalism using the XLE system. This non-transformational framework is particularly fit for expressing systematic relationships between heterogeneous structures and has successfully been used for the implementation of natural language grammars since the 1980s. We tested the implementation on 320 grammatical sentences and on an equal number of ungrammatical examples. It analyzed all grammatical examples and blocked almost 95% of the ungrammatical ones, showing a high empirical adequacy of the grammar.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to present the LITTERA corpus, an English-Spanish literary parallel speech corpus created for the purpose of language learning, and to sketch out a few pedagogical applications for the study of English phonology by Spanish-speaking language learners. It is composed of 25 literary texts that have been aligned with the Spanish translation and are accompanied by audio from the corresponding audiobooks. In this article, we will detail its conception, composition and features at length, as well as provide a few examples of how LITTERA can be applied in language learning, particularly within the realm of oral comprehension and speech production.

Abstract Stories and narrative represent meaningful communicative events, typical of human beings’ nature since everybody loves reading, telling, and listening to them. They may also constitute digital events, conveyed through virtual resources, and inserted in the convergence culture (Jenkins, 2006). Within this culture and responding to media expansion, there is transmedia, disseminating diverse but related contents, spread out through multiple media platforms, allowing meaning to converge from one to another. This context supports the transmedia storytelling concept: A transversal narrative process investigated by many researchers, but particularly by Jenkins (2006, 2011), Scolari (2013), and Gosciola (2014). This concept motivates the debate about transliteracy: a synchronized movement across, through and beyond contents and multiple media platforms. Considering this scenario, this article aims at presenting transmedia storytelling conceptually to exploit its potential to promote transliteracy. To reach this goal, transmedia storytelling concepts and features are discussed. After that, considerations are directed towards the transliteracy concept and implications. To conclude, remarks on the target relationship pointed out as the objective of the paper are addressed together with reflections upon the perception of transmedia storytelling and transliteracy as a concept and an area that are transdisciplinary, respectively.

ABSTRACT In this paper, an expanded version of the visual social actor network (van Leeuwen 2008) is suggested in integration with the classification of fields proposed by Martin (1992). In the context of multimodal critical discourse analysis, such network has provided a template for the discussion of the data aiming to reveal and interrogate the construal of women’s agency in the introductory part of the first film Sex and the City (2008). Overall results place women’s actions mostly in the private sphere but also reveal instances of gender performativity (Butler 1990) that question social norms for women mainly imposed by the media.

ABSTRACT This paper addresses the challenge of analysing texts for ideational grammatical metaphor. It undertakes this task from the perspective of recent work on field (Doran & Martin in press) and discourse semantics (Hao 2020a). In doing so it highlights the benefits of adopting a tri-stratal perspective on experiential and logical grammatical metaphor (Hao 2020b) - bringing all three of the most relevant strata (i.e. field, discourse semantics and lexicogrammar) into the picture.

ABSTRACT In this paper, I attempt to trace the evolution of LAEL over the 50 years of its history, intertwining the narrative with my own personal trajectory since my arrival in Brazil in 1976. The narrative makes no claim to being a step by step account of the different facets of the Programme’s history. Rather, the focus is on how its developments through the years mirror the fortunes of the very area of academic pursuit we call Applied Linguistics.

ABSTRACT This paper offers a Marxist grounding for a liberatory, critical-collaboratory dialogic praxis in educational contexts and examines the implications of such praxis for an understanding of the potential role of the school as a site of critical thinking. Aligning with Stetsenko’s ‘Transformative-Activist Stance’, the discussion centres on clarifying the methodological rationale for approaching language as a means of cultural action and social transformation based on Marx’s materialist conception of history and the educationally based dialogical approaches of Vygotsky and Freire.

This study aims at analysing the main developments in foreign reporting of Latin America by the German press. The paper provides a content analysis of 3.831 articles published in quality German publications (SZ, FAZ, Der Spiegel, and taz) between 2000 and 2014. The most common news factors related to the continent are found to be “magnitude,” “power status,” “economic proximity”, and “personification.” Additionally, we identified a decrease in hard news over the years (6 pp within Politics and 8 pp amidst Economy). Despite depoliticisation, a tendency towards tabloidisation was not confirmed since factors such as personification and crisis remained constant.

ABSTRACT In Spanish, combining an indefinite plural article and a cardinal number leads to an approximative interpretation similar to that provided by approximators like ‘approximately’. In this paper, we advance a syntactic and semantic analysis of these structures. We show that the construction shares a number of properties with structures containing explicit approximative elements, so it justified to assume that a particular constituent contributes the approximative meaning. We propose that an approximative morpheme Approx is combined with the cardinal number; the morphological realization of this morpheme is as the plural affix on the indefinite article. We advance a denotation for Approx, and elaborate the necessary assumptions on the functioning of numerals for our analysis to work at a general level.

ABSTRACT Portuguese exhibits a great variety of wh-exclamative sentences, including sentential exclamatives, which are the main concern of this paper. Brazilian Portuguese sentential wh-exclamatives seem to provide evidence to propose a split Force in the periphery of the sentence (RIZZI, 1997) when one considers the cooccurrence of a relative and an exclamative in the same utterance. We assume there are at least two functional heads available in Force: a RelP (hosting relative WHs) and an ExclP, supposed to host exclamative WHs; analyzed data also show that exclamation must be higher than relativization in a Split Force projection, with some more place above ExclP for topicalizing other syntactic objects.

ABSTRACT The goal of this paper is to provide evidence in favour of the hypothesis that, regarding their internal temporal structure, semelfactive and achievement predicates are alike (i.e., both are atomic). In order to do so, I will study the readings these predicates obtain in two different contexts: when they are modified by for-phrases and when they combine with a progressive operator. The conclusion will be that when combined with elements that operate over intervals, semelfactives trigger a special reading (the iterative one), because these elements cannot operate within their internal temporal structure.

ABSTRACT This paper focuses on the investigation of the meaning of reduplication in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) analyzing the contribution of each of its forms: repetition (\rep) and alternation (\alt). In order to check their role, we proceeded a data collection with a native signer during elicitation sessions following the methodology for semantic elicitation (Matthewson, 2004). We also collected a spontaneous datum with another signer. We show that \rep is related to aspectual distribution, and \alt is associated to two pieces of information - participant-related distribution and aspectual distribution. We propose a formal analysis for each of the forms as well as of the way they interact compositionally.

This study aims at analysing the main developments in foreign reporting of Latin America by the German press. The paper provides a content analysis of 3.831 articles published in quality German publications (SZ, FAZ, Der Spiegel, and taz) between 2000 and 2014. The most common news factors related to the continent are found to be “magnitude,” “power status,” “economic proximity”, and “personification.” Additionally, we identified a decrease in hard news over the years (6 pp within Politics and 8 pp amidst Economy). Despite depoliticisation, a tendency towards tabloidisation was not confirmed since factors such as personification and crisis remained constant.

Planetary ecological crisis and its anthropogenic causes made geology emerge in distinct knowledge fields since the acknowledgement of the geological Anthropecene era. In the field of media studies, this emergence is based on media ecology and archaeology thinkers such as Siegfried Zielinski, Matthew Fuller and Jussi Parikka. This paper, accordingly, will address this context of references and subjects highlighting how art is recognized as a pillar for its epistemological potential, to deal conceptually with media affordances in their ecological relations.

This paper briefly examines the history and the operational underpinnings of forms of volumetric reconstruction based on the capture of visual data, particularly photogrammetry. Photogrammetry is one of the chief techniques currently employed in the production of virtual replicas for heritage conservation. The computational realism resulting from this process induces us to believe that it is possible to recover the totality of an object from its media traces. We mean to challenge this technological promise by referring to artistic projects that explore the idiosyncrasies of photogrammetric models.

The paper reviews Verón’s work, in particular his theories of mediatization, of the circulation of meaning (communication) and of enunciators and enunciatees (institutions, media, collectives of individual actors and individuals). It maintains that Verón made n sharp characterization of the modern and postmodern situation at these levels and it proposes an analytical device to study the spatial and temporal dimension of contemporary circulation, in which content “travels” from social networks to the mass media and from the mass media to social networks. He also argues that it is the new conditions of circulation of meaning that should be focused to account for how our media culture is changing.

This paper analyzes the dissemination of an unofficial negative campaign on Twitter, during the 2016 mayoral election campaign in Rio de Janeiro. The sponsorship of attack messages in electoral races by groups not officially linked to parties and candidates is a strategy little studied in Brazil. To fill this gap, we analyzed the messages posted on Twitter during the second round of that election by the partisans from the main candidates Marcelo Crivella (PRB) and Marcelo Freixo (PSOL), as well as by networks supporting and attacking them. The methodology includes Content Analysis, Social Network Analysis and statistical analysis of an initial sample of 530,000 tweets gathered through Twitter Search API, reaching a final sample of 11,407 posts classified as negative. The results show that the main negative campaign agents have different roles and profiles on Twitter, being identified as influencers or disseminators of attack contents.

This paper discusses and unfolds the main topics of Gilbert Simondon’s course on communication, lectured between 1970 and 1971 but published only in 2010. We believe that the French philosopher, who has been receiving a growing posthumous acclaim, brings forth an original theory of communication, still to be assimilated by our field. As a step towards rebuilding such theory, this text presents the main arguments from Simondon’s course and, confronting them with information theory, defends signification as a key concept for understanding communication as a science of transformations.

The paper discusses the circulation of meanings as a theoretical methodological perspective for research in social media, in the sense of denaturalization and contextualization of data. This involves reincorporating subjects with their contexts, values and contradictions, involved in power relations and struggles for meaning, considering the limits of circulation. In methodological terms, it is an apprehension from the digital traces, trying to go beyond descriptivism.

From a mapping of methodologies employed in academic studies about television journalism, produced between 2015 and 2017 in 11 databases, this article suggests the relevance of looking over the images and their combinations with words in the production of meanings. It also proposes the recognition of the necessity to articulate to the textual analyses of TV News and television programs four instances that constitute the communicative processes in the convergent environment: singularities of ambience, circulation, features of organizations and productive practices and interactions of audiences. In this sense, this paper presents the analytic framework of the Convergent Televisual Analysis (ATC), a methodological procedure for the critical reading of audiovisual texts in communication research and learning processes at a time of transformation of production and consumption of audio and video contents and formats resulting from media digitalization.

This paper proposes to analyze “All that is Solid” by artist and filmmaker Louis Henderson, a documentary film that uses the desktop of the computer as a background for a new kind of narrative structure to unfold. This film will be looked at mainly through Lev Manovich ́s notion of the “database as a symbolic form” (MANOVICH, 1999) which the author attributes to the “age of the computer” when the database becomes the key form of cultural expression after the novel and cinema. It conducts a close reading of the film while pointing out several moments when database as a cultural expression surfaces, becomes dominant, and competes with conventional narrative forms of filmmaking. Through the basic system of organizing folders on his computer’s desktop Henderson reflexively unravels a complex story: as technological progress advances in the West, piles of obsolete computers are thrown away, sent to the coast of West Africa, and end up being recycled in waste grounds such as Agbogbloshie in Accra, Ghana. The film confronts us with a strange system of recycling, a kind of reverse, neo-colonial mining, where groups of Ghanaians search for residues of mineral resources in the computer waste materials sent from Europe. It tells us of the correlation between technology and race, and of the immateriality of the ‘Cloud’ in contrast to the heavy materiality of e-waste zones.
