Background and purpose: Aphthous and oral ulcers are the most common ulcerative conditions of the oral mucosa, presenting as painful sores on the oral or tongue mucous membranes that make eating and drinking difficult. Zataria multiflora Boiss. has demonstrated therapeutic potential and has been used in formulations such as Protact® mouthwash. Recent studies indicate that this plant possesses several therapeutic effects, including alleviating inflammation and promoting healing in oral, digestive, and skin wounds. Given the documented effectiveness of this plant in treating various types of oral wounds and inflammation, along with the availability of Protact® mouthwash in pharmacies nationwide, this study aims to evaluate patient and physician satisfaction with the efficacy of Protact® mouthwash for treating oral ulcers and aphthous ulcers in Sari and Babol, the two largest cities by population in Mazandaran province. Materials and methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study included a sample of 75 individuals, consisting of 35 physicians and 40 patients from Sari and Babol who either prescribed or used Protact® mouthwash. A convenience sampling method was used, with participants selected based on their willingness to complete a checklist. Data were collected by trained interviewers visiting medical centers, physician clinics, and pharmacies, and inviting participants to complete the checklist. Data were presented as mean ± standard deviation (M ± SD), percentages, median, minimum, and maximum values. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-squared, Kolmogorov–Smirnov, and independent t-tests. Results: The majority of participants in both groups were men (patients: 52.5%, or 21 out of 40; physicians: 94.3%, or 33 out of 35). The mean, median, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum ages for physicians were 53.94, 56, 7.6, 40, and 68 years, respectively, while those for patients were 40.13, 42, 10.8, 18, and 63 years, respectively. Most patients in this study (75%) reported a high level of satisfaction after using Protact® mouthwash. This mouthwash was mainly used for the treatment of aphthous stomatitis and oral inflammation, with a frequency of 52.5%. Results from the physicians' checklists showed that Protact® mouthwash was most frequently prescribed by dentists (42.9%), followed by general practitioners, hematologists and oncologists, and radiologists (each with a frequency of 11.4%). Additionally, physicians expressed satisfaction with the healing progress in their patients. Conclusion: The findings support the effectiveness of Protact® mouthwash, a natural product produced in Iran, for the prevention and treatment of oral cavity-related conditions. The efficacy of this product is likely attributed to the presence of major phytochemicals in Zataria multiflora extract and essential oil, including thymol and carvacrol, which possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and tissueregenerative properties beneficial to mucosal and skin healing. Lakes play a vital role in water conservation, biodiversity, tourism and job creation. However, seasonal changes, inflow of sewage and erosion increase the amount of nutrients discharged into the lakes and affect the structure of the ecosystem and the diversity of its planktons through the reduction of water quality. The purpose of this study was to identify the species composition and abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities in Karon-4 lake to investigate the trophic indicators and water quality of this lake. For this purpose, after identifying 4 stations, sampling was done in 4 stages during 2017. Based on the results, 30 species of phytoplankton (belonging to 7 groups) and 58 species of zooplankton (belonging to 7 groups) were identified. The highest density of phytoplankton was observed in late summer and autumn, indicated the high values of soluble oxygen of the lake in these seasons beacause of increased photosynthetic activities. Most of the observed zooplankton species were also in the spring season and related to Copepoda, Rotifer and Cladocer. The average Shannon-Wiener and Margalf indices for phyto and zooplanktons indicated the improvement of living conditions and the possibility of the presence of more diverse species of zooplanktons due to the development of phytoplanktons in this lake. Therefore, in order to prevent algal bloom, in addition to controlling external factors (entry of various pollutants), attention should also be paid to internal conditions governing this dam. The life cycle of barnacles usually consists of two stages: the free-swimming larval stage and the stationary stage. Their larval stage has 6 stages. Considering that plant essential oils showed anti-algae properties in previous studies, in this study, the toxicity of this essential oil was investigated on different stages of barnacle larvae of A. amphitrite species. Because they should not have a negative effect on the food chain. Also, in order to evaluate the toxicity effects of Z. multiflora essential oil on barnacle larvae as a study model. This test was performed based on the determination of LC50 in a 24-hour period on different stages of barnacle larvae, in such a way that in 24-well plates of each stock, 6 concentrations of 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, 3.125, 1.5 µg/ml was prepared, then 1 ml of sea water and 10 barnacle larvae were added to each well and the number of dead and alive was checked by loupe. The obtained results showed that the LC50-14.198 µg/ml in the (VI ( stage of and the LC50-36.91 µg/ml in the) II( stage have a significant difference. Also, this plant essential oil showed a toxic effect on barnacle larvae at concentrations higher than 20 g/ml. But in general, the use of this herbal essential oil has significant biological activity due to having carvacrol as the main component of the essential oil. Also, by having different compounds such as phenolic, terpenoids and alkaloids, it can be a pioneer in the development of practical and bio-compatible with eco-management goals in low concentrations.

Considering the growth period of saffron, intercropping it with species that have similar needs could be a favourable option for optimizing land use, provided that the allelopathic effects of saffron are taken into account. In order to investigate the allelopathic effect of saffron on quantitative and qualitative traits of some medicinal plants, an experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran. Treatments were a combination of 4 species (Thymus vulgaris, Zataria multiflora, Ziziphora clinopodioides and Teucrium polium and corm and leaf extracts in four levels (0, 3000, 6000, 9000 mg.kg-1 ) arranged in a completely randomized design with four replications. Measured parameters were the fresh and dry weight of root and shoot, shoot-to-root ratio, stomatal resistance, SPAD reading and essential oil percentage and yield. Results indicated that interaction of corm and leaf extract concentrations affected fresh weight of root and SPAD reading. Four species showed different trends in different extract concentrations. In Thymus vulgaris and Zataria multiflora, with increasing extract concentration, stomatal resistance initially increased and then decreased, but other species did not follow this trend. By increasing extract concentration, SPAD reading initially increased and then decreased. In all species studied, except Thymus vulgaris, an increase in extract concentration led to an increase in the shoot-to-root ratio. Additionally, as extract concentrations rose, the percentage of essential oil decreased. Overall, across all investigated species, the physiological and qualitative traits of the plants decreased with the use of saffron leaf and corm extracts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nowadays if essential oils can remain stable in food processing conditions, they can be used as an alternative to synthetic preservatives in food products. In this research, in addition to investigating the compounds of Zataria multiflora and cinnamon essential oils by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the antimicrobial properties of two essential oils before and after heat treatment (200 °C; 10 min) against Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger were evaluated. Based on the obtained results, the thermal process did not significantly affect the main compounds of the essential oils. Cinnamaldehyde and eugenol were the main constituents of cinnamon essential oil, while phenolic compounds (thymol and carvacrol) made up 61.5% of Z. multiflora essential oil. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of Z. multiflora and cinnamon essential oils against Aspergillus niger were 250 and 4000 µL/mL, respectively, while the minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) were 250 and 16,000 µL/mL, respectively. Against Bucillus subtilis, the MIC and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) values were 7.8 and 15.6 µL/mL for Z. multiflora, and 16,000 and 32,000 µL/mL for cinnamon, respectively. The inhibition zones of heated Z. multiflora and cinnamon essential oils were 20.5 and 16.05 mm against A. niger and 29.00 and 17.00 mm against B. subtilis, respectively. In general, the results demonstrated that the thermal process did not significantly affect the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils, meaning that they are suitable for use as antimicrobial agents in products that undergo thermal processing.

Background and Objective: Exercise training and Zataria multiflora have a positive effect on health and can modulate cardiovascular risk factors. Adipose tissue-derived factors such as ANGPTL8 and adhesive molecules play an important role in exerting the pathological effects of obesity. This study aimed to investigate the effect of eight weeks of resistance-endurance exercise training combined with Zataria multiflora ingestion on the levels of ANGPTL8, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 in sedentary overweight and obese men. Methods: In this clinical trial study, 40 sedentary overweight and obese men (with an average body mass index of 28.41±1.75 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to four groups with 10 subjects each. The groups included placebo, Zataria multiflora, training, and training + Zataria multiflora. The exercise training was combined training consisting of resistance-endurance exercise, conducted three times per week over eight weeks. Zataria multiflora supplement consumption was set at 500 mg daily. Blood sampling was conducted before and after the eight-week intervention, and the levels of ANGPTL8, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 were measured using the ELISA method. Introduction: Coronaviruses are animal-derived enveloped viruses that in addition to respiratory and digestive diseases have also been found in neurological diseases, some of which have caused nephritis or have been observed in patients with Multiple Sclerosis and mouse hepatitis. However, in general, the most important effect of coronaviruses is on the respiratory and digestive systems. This study aimed to compare the genome of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-28) with that of other viruses of the coronavirus family. Moreover, it was attempted to investigate the possibility of its falsification and finally evaluate the effect of linalool and thymol on the inactivity of the orf1ab protein of SARS-CoV-2. Materials & Methods: The Coronaviridae family virus genome sequence was obtained from the NCBI database. After alignment, the number of mutations, nucleotide diversity, number of sites in which the same substitution occurred, clustering, similarity and genetic distance, as well as dN/dS index were evaluated in this study. The three-dimensional structure of the orf1ab protein prediction and the accuracy of the predicted model was also investigated. Furthermore, this study examined the motif and the domains conserved for the orf1ab gene in all viruses of the Coronaviridae family, as well as the membrane, cytoplasm, and kinase domains in the orf1ab virus of SARS-CoV-2. Regarding the molecular docking, linalool (the most important thirst-suppressing substance of Scrophularia striata) of the model plant (i.e., araboidopsis) and thymol (the most important ingredient of Trachyspermum ammi L.) were used to prevent the inactivation of the orf1ab protein of SARS-CoV-2.Ethics code: IR.UOZ.REC.1399.003 Findings: The SARS-CoV-2 virus has 11 conserved domains and 11 genes. The presence of the NSP13 superfamily and SUD-M superfamily in the SARS-CoV-2 virus genome indicate the ability and effort of this virus to be more stable in the environment. Based on the numerical value of dN/dS (1.036) and Tajima´s D (4.39) for orf1ab, the slope of the changes during evolution for the orf1ab gene is very slow, and there is no choice of direction in virus changes. Based on the highest interaction between linalool protein and orf1ab protein (-41.0), the highest accuracy (0.172), lowest energy level (ΔG=-6.23Kcal/mol), and the best combination (Full Fitness=-1340.18 Kcal/mol) between thymol phytochemical and orf1ab protein, molecular docking results showed that both linalool protein and thymol substance bound to orf1ab protein and inhibited its activity. Discussions & Conclusions: Linalol and thymol affected the inactivity of the orf1ab protein in the SARS-CoV-2 virus. However, clinical trials on linalool and thymol should be performed to confirm these hypotheses. If the hypothesis approves, it is suggested to use them in this regard. In addition, by examining the dN/dS indices, as well as evaluating the singletons, domains, and conserved areas of all viruses, it was found that the SARS-CoV-2 virus could not be purposefully manipulated.

Objectives: Staphylococcus aureus is an important human pathogenic bacterium and one of the pathogens that commonly causes biofilm infections in the clinic. Antibiotic resistance has spread worldwide in Staphylococcus aureus and is a serious problem for the treatment of patients. In this study, the effect of thyme essential oil of Shirazi and cinnamon on the formation of biofilm in Staphylococcus aureus strains has been investigated. Methods: In this study, 20 clinical samples of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from the urine of patients admitted to the intensive care unit of Taleghani Hospital in Tehran. The microdilution test was performed to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Zataria multiflora and cinnamon essential oils on strains. The ability of biofilm formation in the collected strains was assessed by microtiterplate and the effects of Zataria multiflora and cinnamon essential oils were evaluated on biofilm formation. Results: In this study, 75% of Staphylococcus aureus strains formed strong biofilm and 25% moderate biofilm. Treatment of Staphylococcus aureus strains with Zataria multiflora essential oils in MIC concentration revealed that biofilm formation were 40% weak and 60% strains did not form biofilm. Treatment of strains with cinnamon essential oil at MIC concentration was observed to be 25% strong biofilm and 75% moderate biofilm. The present study shows the effect of essential oils of Zataria multiflora and cinnamon in reducing the biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus strains.

In order to evaluate the effect of moderate dose gamma irradiation (10 KGr) on antioxidant and antibacterial properties of Zataria multiflora Boiss, edible active coating containing normal and irradiated extract (1.5%) on base of Na-caseinate solution (8%) was prepared and shelf life of coated rainbow trout fillet was evaluted. An experiment was carry out with 4 treatments without coating (control), fillets coated with Na-caseinate (T1), and fillets coated with Nacaseinate enriched with normal (T2) or irradiated (T3) Zataria multiflora Boiss extract and 4 replicates during 10 days at refrigerated (4±1oC) storage. Chemical (TVN, TBA, PV) and microbial (TVC and PTC) tests were measured on days 0, 3, 6 and 10. The results showed irradiation of Zataria multiflora Boiss with a moderate dose of gamma rays, despite the possitive effects, did not cause significant changes in its antioxidant and antibacterial properties. But at the end of the storage period, the lowest levels of TBA (3.23±0.23 mg MDA/Kg), TVN (25.23±1.12 mg/100g) and psychrophilic bacteria counts (5.00±0.13 log cfu/g) was found in fillets containing active coating of Na-caseinate and irradiated Zataria multiflora Boiss extract (p <0.05). Therefore, Zataria multiflora Boiss extract can be used as normal or irradiated in the active coating of Na-caseinate, to increase the shelf life and quality of rainbow trout fillets at refrigerator temperature for at least 10 days. Introduction : Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative and microaerophilic bacterium. About half of the human population in the world is infected with this bacterium. Helicobacter pylori is known to be one of the main causes of stomach ulcers and gastric cancer. The increased antibiotic resistance, the high cost of combined treatments and adverse side effects have led to an increase in the tendency to alternative methods such as the use of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, probiotics and herbal medicines. Material and method : In this study the published articles on the effects of 29 plant families, including 69 Iranian plant species against H. pylori in vitro and in vivo conditions were reviewed and categorized. Results : According to the obtained results, plants such as Mentha Piperita, Zataria multiflora, Salvia mirzayanii, Geum Iranicum, Rhus coriaria , Commiphora myrrha, Heracleum persicum, Trachyspermum amm, Artemisia absinthium, Glycyrrhiza glabra L, Olea europaea and Punica granatum are the most affected plants against Helicobacter pylori in vitro condition. Discussion and conclusion: The observed antibacterial effects of the tested herbs in this study suggest that these herbs have the potential to be used as a viable alternative treatement for of the H. pylori infections but antibacterial activity evaluation of herbal extracts against H. pylori should be evaluated both in vitro and in vivo conditions. Also, determining the effective ingredient can help further research in this regard. The effectiveness of the same plant species should be evaluated in the different regions and ultimately concluded in the field of their effect. It is clear that the obtain outcome of the antibacterial effect of the same herbal extract on different strains of a bacterial species might be different so the standard strain of H. pylori must be use.

Background and purpose: In recent decades, various efforts have been made to replace synthetic materials with natural disinfectants that have less disadvantages and lead to similar or even better results. The present study was conducted to compare the effect of Artemisia aucheri and Zataria multiflora as natural disinfectants with those of Deconex and sodium hypochlorite as two industrial disinfectants on Candida albicans. Materials and methods: This experimental study was conducted in 128 resin acrylic dentures. After the inoculation of C. albicans on each denture, they were divided into four groups, each containing 32 dentures. Deconex, Sodium hypochlorite, Artemisia aucheri, and Zataria multiflora were administered in each group in four densities (0.1, 0.01, 0.001, and 0.0001). Objective The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of two different levels of Zataria multiflora with Avilamycin antibiotic and probiotic based on Bacillus subtilis on humoral and cellular immunity and expression of MUC2 gene in broiler chickens of Arian strain. Materials and methods This study was conducted in a completely randomized design with five experimental groups with 4 replicates and 25 observations in each replicate. Experimental groups included basal diet and basal diet containing 100 mg Bacillus subtilis, 150 mg avilamycin, 200 mg and 400 mg Zataria multiflora essence, respectively. In order to evaluate the humoral and cellular immunity, the antibody produced against the sheep's red blood cell, white blood cell differentialcounts and the volume percentage of red blood cells were determined. Expression of MUC2 gene from the intestinal tissues was investigated by Real time PCR. Results The results showed that response to red blood cells of sheep, immunoglobulin G and M was not affected by experimental groups(p>0.05). The number of white blood cells and the ratio of heterophil to lymphocyte were not affected by the experimental groups (p>0.05). The expression of MUC2 gene in the chickens that consumed the basal diet included Zataria multiflora was significantly increased compared with the control group. Conclusions The results showed that the use of Zataria multiflora essence could be having moderating effects on the immune system. It, by increasing the expression of MUC2 gene, could be having improving effect on the digestive system performance of broiler chickens. The production of reactive oxygen species, such as hydrogen peroxide is inevitable in aerobic metabolism. Since, these compounds are effective at different concentration in a variety of processes in the cell and their excessive production lead to oxidative stresses, Therefore, their concentration must be controlled. In this study, Zataria multiflora essential oil with abundant phenolic compounds (thymol, carvacrol), and zedo gum polymers were used to encapsulate nanoemulsion production. The effect of zedo gum - Zataria multiflora essential oil nanoemulsion were investigated in the inhibition of ABTS (2,2-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfonic acid), hydrogen peroxide free radicals intercellular and expression of the (NOX:NAD(P)H oxidase) gene with accession number AY561153 (the largest producer of reactive oxygen species). Nanoemulsion with 88 mg/gr phenol content showed a high ability to inhibit the free radical ABTS and hydrogen peroxide. On the other hand, at concentration of 25 and 50 µg/ml increased the expression of NOX and at concentration of 100, 150 and 200 µg/ml decreased it. Our results showed that, different concentration of nanoemulsion have different effect on reactive oxygen species and, therefore, they have the ability to control oxidative stresses.

Phenolic compounds, especially those with plant origin, constitute an essential part of the human diet due to their antioxidant properties. Antioxidants protect biological systems (nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, lipoproteins) against free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Some medicinal plants contain so high amounts of antioxidants that their use can be considerably effective for human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of flooding extraction method on phenolic compounds, flavonoids and the level of free radical scavenging properties of medicinal plants including Thyme, Hamadani Yarrow, Shirazi mountain thyme, Yarrow, Chamomile, Saffron corm hyssop Sagebrush, wormwood, Artemisia and Ziziphora clinopodioiedes, in four extraction solvents including water, methanol, acetone and ethanol. The results showed that methanol and water solvents had the highest and the lowest total phenolic, flavonoid and antioxidant activity, respectively. The results also showed that methanol extraction of Shirazi thyme and water extraction of Wormwood plant had the highest and the lowest phenol and flavonoids contents, respectively. The results of trapping the free radicals of DPPH indicated that the methanol extract of Shirazi thyme and aqueous extract of wormwood had the highest and the lowest inhibition activities, respectively. Therefore, the selection of solvent type can affect the rate of the extraction of phenolic compounds, flavonoids and antioxidant activity.

Zataria multiflora Boiss. belongs to Lamiaceae family, which grows wildly in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. In the present study, the aerial parts of this plant were collected at full flowering stage from six habitats in Hormozgan province including Roudkhane, Lavar-shaikh, Faryab, Tang-e-Zagh, Bashagard and Bandar-e-Khamir. After confirmation of scientific names of the species, the plant materials were dried at shade and at room temperature and the essential oils were obtained by hydro-distillation. The essential oils were analyzed by GC and GC/MS techniques. Results showed that maximum and minimum essential oil contents (w/w%) obtained from Roudkhaneh (6.5%) and Bandar-e-khamir (3.9%) ecotypes, respectively. According to essential oil compound analysis, twenty-three components, representing 93.5 - 99.3% of the total components, were identified. Thymol, linalool, carvacrol and p-cymene were the major compounds in the studied ecotypes. Oxygenated monoterpens were the main group of constituents in all samples except Faryab (45.6-75.3%). Cluster analysis of chemical compounds divided the studied ecotypes into three groups. The first group, which was characterized by a high amount of carvacrol, included the ecotypes of Bandar-e-khamir and Bashagard; the second group, which contained a high amount of thymol, included three ecotypes of Tang-e-zagh, Faryab and Roudkhane, and the ecotype of Lavar-shaikh, which formed the third group, had the highest amount of linalool. The results showed that Z. multiflora ecotypes in the habitats of Hormozgan province have a high percentage of essential oil and phytochemical diversity and can be used in breeding programs. The use of medicinal plants can be effective in increasing the growth of aquatic organisms and to promote a non-specific immune level to increase resistance to diseases in aquaculture. Zataria multiflora, a plant of the Lamiaceae family, is an example of such medicinal plants containing mainly thymol and carvacrol, with well-known antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different doses of thyme powder (Zataria multflora) on growth performance and serumic parameters of young common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Therefore, two hundred and forty fish, with initial weight of 20/27±5.13 g, were distributed among the treatments. Food was made with adding the powdered thyme in 4 formulations with 0 (control or Group 1), 50 (Group II), 100 (Group III) and eventually 150 ppm (Group IV) with a size of 4.3 mm. It was fed to the fish 3 to 4 times a day at a rate of 3-4% of their body weight, for 8 weeks. Introduction: Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative and microaerophilic bacterium. About half of the human population in the world is infected with this bacterium. Helicobacter pylori is known to be one of the main causes of stomach ulcers and gastric cancer. The increased antibiotic resistance, the high cost of combined treatments and adverse side effects have led to an increase in the tendency to alternative methods such as the use of antioxidants, antiinflammatory agents, probiotics, and herbal medicines. Materials and methods: In this study the published articles on the effects of 29 plant families, including 69 Iranian plant species against H. pylori in vitro and in vivo conditions were reviewed and categorized. Results: According to the obtained results, plants such as Mentha Piperita, Zataria multiflora, Salvia mirzayanii, Geum Iranicum, Rhus coriaria, Commiphora myrrha, Heracleum persicum, Trachyspermum amm, Artemisia absinthium, Glycyrrhiza glabra L, Olea europaea and Punica granatum are the most affected plants against Helicobacter pylori in vitro condition. Conclusion: The observed antibacterial effects of the tested herbs in this study suggest that these herbs have the potential to be used as a viable alternative treatment for of the H. pylori infections but antibacterial activity evaluation of herbal extracts against H. pylori should be evaluated both in vitro and in vivo conditions. Also, determining the effective ingredient can help further research in this regard. The effectiveness of the same plant species should be evaluated in the different regions and ultimately concluded in the field of their effect. It is clear that the obtain outcome of the antibacterial effect of the same herbal extract on different strains of a bacterial species might be different so the standard strain of H. pylori must be use. Background and purpose: In recent decades, various efforts have been made to replace synthetic materials with natural disinfectants that have less disadvantages and lead to similar or even better results. The present study was conducted to compare the effect of Artemisia aucheri and Zataria multiflora as natural disinfectants with those of Deconex and sodium hypochlorite as two industrial disinfectants on Candida albicans. Materials and methods: This experimental study was conducted in 128 resin acrylic dentures. After the inoculation of C. albicans on each denture, they were divided into four groups, each containing 32 dentures. Deconex, Sodium hypochlorite, Artemisia aucheri, and Zataria multiflora were administered in each group in four densities (0.1, 0.01, 0.001, and 0.0001). The data were analyzed in SPSS V19 applying t-test. Results: The four disinfectants were applied for 10 and 60 min. Deconex showed the highest disinfection effect on samples (P<0.05). There were no significant differences between the effect of Artemisia aucheri and Zataria multiflora after 60 min and 10 min. However, it was found that the potency of Artemisia aucheri and Zataria multiflora increased after 60 min. Conclusion: Current findings showed chemical disinfectants with higher potency in short-time intervals, compared to the natural ones. But, after a longer period of time, Artemisia aucheri and Zataria multiflora exerted similar effects as those of the synthetic disinfectants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of edible coatings to protect food has increased dramatically in recent years. In this study, the pileus of button mushroom Agaricus bisporus was coated with 1% carboxymethyl cellulose and essential oil nanoemulsion of Zataria multiflora at three concentrations of 200, 300 and 400 mg/l and stored at 8 ° C for 2 weeks. Then weight loss, brix, texture strength and solution color were investigated. Button mushroom coated with essential oil nano-emulsion showed a significant difference in weight loss from that of control. The results showed that Increasing the concentration of nanoemulsion reduced the weight loss of the pileus. Also, the amount of moisture loss in the pileus is similar to the trend of weight loss. Therefore, the nano-emulsion coating reduced the drying process in the pileus. Tissue strength was increased with increasing concentrations of nano-emulsion oils compared to control , and the best concentration was 300 and 400 mg/l. The brix was increased until the seventh day and decreased at the end of the durability period , with the lowest concentration at 400 mg/l. Background: Despite all the progress that has been made in the manufacture of synthetic drugs, herbal drugs are increasingly taken into account. This is due to the growing belief that they have fewer side effects compared to synthetic ones. Objective: To compare the antifungal effects of extracts of Zatariamultiflora and Punicagranatum with Nystatin on Candida Albicans. Abstract Background: Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that broadly is used to treat gram negative bacteria infections, although it has side effects such as nephrotoxicity. According to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory properties of Zataria Multiflora, the effects of co-treatment with zataria Multiflora and hydroalcholic extract on gentamicin induced nephrotoxicitj were investigated. Materials and Methods: In this study, male rats of Vistar race were divided into 4 groups: 1.control group, 2. co-treatment with gentamicin and vehicle group, 3. co-treatment with gentamicin and zataria Multifiora extract group, 4. co-treatment with zataria Multiflora extract and normal saline solution group. Zataria Multiflora hydroalcoholic extract was added to drinking water as 800 PPm concentration. They, systolic blood pressure and renal blood flow (RBF) were measured. Also, the amounts of urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium and osmolarity were measured in plasma and urine samples Results: In co-treatment group with zataria Multiflora extract, the amounts of urea, creatinine, absolute sodium excretion and relative sodium and potassium excretion and malondialdehyde (MDA) that have been inceased in treatment with gentamicin, significantly were reduced. Creatinine clearance, urine osmolarity, RBF and FRAP that was decreased in gentamicin group in compare to control group, significantly increased. Conclusion: Co-treatment prevents nephrotoxicity induced by gentamicin and attenuates oxidative-stress associated renal injury by reducing oxygen free radicals and lipid peroxidation, So it can be effective to cure rats receiving gentamicin.

Background & aim: Anxiety disorders are a major problem for humanity. Research continues to find effective drugs with lower side effects. Thyme is one of the medicinal plants that may have many therapeutic effects including anti-anxiety effect. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary thyme (Zataria multiflora Boiss) on anxiety. Methods: In the present experimental study, forty male adult Wistar rats with an average weight of 180-220 gr were randomly divided into five groups, including a control group, group treated with diazepam and three treated groups which received diet containing thyme for periods of two, three and four weeks respectively. Introduction: Essential oils and extracts from medicinal plants are regarded as natural food preservatives and health promoting drugs. Considering their antioxidant activity, most of them can prevent oxidative stress. The present study was aimed to evaluate free radicals scavenging activity of essential oils and different fractions of methanol extracts from cinnamon, pennyroyal, black cumin, sage, rosemary and azkand. Methods: Antioxidant property of essential oils and different fractions of these medicinal plants was studied by determining their DPPH(2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free radicals scavenging activity. Results: There were significant differences among the free radical scavenging activity of studied essential oils and different fractions. Ethyl acetate fractions were identified as the most active fractions than other ones and even synthetic antioxidant (BHT, IC50 value of 239.5μg/ml) with the highest activity in Mentha pulegium (47.2 μg/ml μg/ml). Among others, n-hexane fraction of rosemary (969 μg/ml), dichloromethane fraction of rosemary (205.46 μg/ml) and zatar (344 μg/ml) and aqueous fractions of cinnamon (117.6 μg/ml) and sage (321.3 μg/ml) exhibited appreciable antioxidant activity. Conclusion: Regarding considerable activity of studied extracts, they have the potential to be used as natural antioxidants in relevant industries.

The antimicrobial effect of of different concentrations of Zataria multiflora Boiss. essential oil at supplementation levels of (0, 0.005, 0.015, 0. 03%), on E. Coli O157:H7 was examined in minced beef meat. All of the above concentrations showed acceptable organoleptic properties in minced beef. Eo at 0.03% possessed a strong antibacterial activity against E.Coli O157:H7 in minced beef. Background and purpose: Escherichia coli is a common cause of food poisoning. After entering the body, toxins will release in the intestinal. Toxin derived from this bacterium can damage the intestinal mucosal and cause severe abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria monocytogenes in animals and humans causes a serious infection called listeriosis that could be transferred to humans through contaminated food such as cheese, raw vegetables, salads and fish. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of essential oil of Boiss Zataria multiflora on the behavior of E. coli and L. monocytogenes in ground silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) stored at temperature C ° 4. Materials and methods: The samples were inoculated separately by E.coli and L. monocytogenes at 4.5 and 4.6 log CFU/gr, respectively. Then, treatments of B. Zataria multiflora were prepared in two concentrations of 0.8% and 1.2%. All samples in both treatment and control group were stored at refrigerator temperature for 72 hr. The number of E.coli and L. monocytogenes were counted daily by cultivation on the Ecc Chromagar liquid and listeria selective chromagar medium. Results: We observed significant antimicrobial effect in 1.2% concentration of B. Zataria multiflora, which was also able to reduce E. coli after 48 hours. This treatment had a high bactericidal effect, since no bacterial colonies were isolated at 48 and 72 hours. The studied concentrations of B. Zataria multiflora, showed inhibitory effects on L. monocytogenes. Conclusion: B. Zataria multiflora was found to have bactericidal activity against E.coli while this activity was not considerable against L. monocytogenes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and purpose: Nowadays, adding natural preservatives is one of the main methods for increasing shelf-life. This study evaluated the antioxidant activity of Zataria multiflora hydroalcoholic extract and its antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus in hamburger. Materials and methods: In this experimental study, after collection and extraction of Zataria multiflora, total amount of phenols and flavonoids as well as flavonols were colorimetrically determined. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by β-Carotene bleaching assey. Then the effect of different concentrations of Zataria multiflora extract (0.0, 0.5 and 1.5%) in 4±1°C at different storage times (0, 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 days) was evaluated on growth of Staphylococcus aureus in hamburger. Results: Total phenol content in Zataria multiflora extract was 283.43±11.06 mg/gr as gallic acid equivalent. Total flavonoid and total flavonol contents were 131.23±4.5 and 92±5.67mg/g as rutin equivalent, respectively. Antioxidant activity was 71±4 percent. Also Zataria multiflora extract in 4±1°C decreased the growth rate of Staphylococcus aureus in hamburger. Conclusion: These findings showed that Zataria multiflora had antibacterial effect and could be used as an antibacterial preservative in hamburger or other meat products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
