Background and Aims: According to the research background and need to print CBCT images in case of emergency, this study has been done to compare the quality and accuracy of the two methods of film and paper printing for CBCT images. Materials and Methods: The study of CBCT images taken from 5 patients was done and the cross-sectional slices on Fotolusio DNP papers and film AGFA were printed. Afterward, the images was exmined by a maxillofacial radiologist. The images’ quality were identified and recorded with anatomical, from 1 to 4 on forms. The accuracy was determined by the diagnosis of alveolar canal area and the comparison with the gold standard. Data were analyzed using independent chi-square and Fisher exact tests’. Results: The images quality in anatomical landmarks consisting PDL (P=0.02), lamina dura (P=0.006), the inferior alveolar canal (P=0.01) and the filling (P=0.006) had a significant difference. There was no significant difference. For the lower border of the mandible landmark, there was no difference between the two methods of printing. In comparing the diagnostic accuracy between the two methods (P=1). Conclusion: The results showed that the diagnostic quality in film printing is better than paper printing and the diagnostic accuracy is the same in both methods.

FTIR spectroscopic imaging is a chemical imaging method that can be employed to a broad range of applications. This powerful technique is suitable for determining the functional groups and chemical structures of the samples. The advantage of infra-red spectroscopy is that it can be used for various modes of physical samples. The aim of the current paper was to review the recent advances and the potential uses of Fourier Transform Infra-red Spectroscopy in dentistry via exploring related literature during 1960 till 2017 in Science Direct and PubMed databases. One of the most popular applications of infrared spectroscopy is to calculate the degree of conversion in the resin based dental materials. It has also been used to investigate the chemical structure of the teeth and bones, synthesis calcium phosphate, the diagnosis of microorganisms, and pathological conditions. In this paper, we mentioned the principles of this technique and recommend this method as a simple and fast way to determine the structure of the materials and their alteration.

Background and Aims: To evaluate the effect of polishing on surface roughness of silorane-based composite using profilometery and Scanning Election Microscopy (SEM) and compare it with that of a methylmethacrylate-based composite and a glass ionomer. Materials and Methods: In this study, 3 groups (n=28) were tested: specimens of two composites (Filtek P90 and Filtek P60) and a glass ionomer (Fuji IX) which were prepared in polyethylene molds (4 mm diameter×10 mm height). Half of the specimens in each group were finished with 180-grit silicon carbide paper and the remaining were finished with 180-grit, and subsequently polished with 250, 400, 800, 1000, 2000, and 2500-grit silicon carbide papers. The surface roughness was evaluated using a contact profilometer and then mean (Ra) and maximum (Rmax) of surface roughness were recorded. Then, the surface of 4 specimens of each subgroup was observed under SEM. Statistical analysis was performed with T-test, ANOVA and Dunnett T3 tests. Results: In all materials, Ra was different between polishing with 180 and 2500-grit silicon carbide papers. In 180-grit group, only Ra of Filtek P60 and Fuji IX showed significant difference (P=0.01). In 2500-grit group, there was no significant difference between the Ra of Filtek P60 and Filtek P90 (P=0.56). Conclusion: Polishing is recommended for the glass ionomer and posterior composite restorations.

"nGingival overgrowth is a drug-associated side effect occurs in pediatric patients. Phenytoin, cyclosporine, calcium channel blockers, and amphetamine are primary drugs that can cause gingival enlargement in children. Pediatric patients are more prone to drug-associated gingival overgrowth rather than adults. Gingival overgrowth may cause functional, phonetic, and nutritional difficulties, and more importantly, may affect the psycho-social development, self-esteem, and quality of life in children. However, the researches about this issue are rare. This Part I paper provides an analysis of pediatric systemic disease and corresponding prescribed medications for selected physical and mental health conditions. This paper describes the morbidity and risk for children related to gingival overgrowth and proposes a framework for action that will be more completely described in a part II paper on this topic.

Background and Aim: Compared to the information about educational responsibilities, there is not much information about the research skills and activities of the academics in dental schools. The aim of this study was to evaluate the research performance of the academic staff of the dental schools and their educational needs to promote their research skills. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was done by mailing a questionnaire to all of the members of Iran dental faculties. The questionnaires contained personal information like age, sex, place of employment, educational records, and additional questions like the workshops previously attended, and interests to attend certain workshops. To evaluate the research performance of the academic staff, the number of accomplished researches, the articles published in known national and international journals, their skills in using internet, and the number of attended workshops about research methodology were included in the questionnaire. The completed questionnaires were gathered and evaluated by descriptive statistics. Results: From the questionnaires gathered, 436 were eligible to be included in the study, which formed 58% of the academic staff of dental schools. The results showed that 7.4% of the staff had more than 10 researches conducted, 15% had 5-10, 49.9% had less than 5, and 27.7 had no researches done. Considering the articles published in known national journals, 28.2% had no papers, 51.8% had 1-5 papers, and 20% had more than 5 papers. Regarding the number of articles published in known international journals, 77.5% had no papers, and 20.2% had 1-3, and 2.3% and more than 3 papers. The "preliminary research methods" workshop had the highest percent of participation (71.6%), and "Stata acquaintance" workshop had the least (0.7%). The participants were mainly interested to participate in three workshops, "English scientific writing" (26.3%), "principles of scientific writing" (17.5%), and preparing research proposals" (16.2%), respectively. Conclusion We concluded that the research skills and performance of the academic staff, though improved in the recent years, is still unsatisfying. In order to promote it, it is recommended to organize workshops about "research methodology", "scientific writing" and "preparing of proposals"

Background and Aims: One of the important fields of dentistry is surgery for dental implants. In this field, dentistry has developed considerably in recent years amongst other fields of medicine from the perspective of digital device and software application. Surgical guides help dental surgeon for more precise, confident, easier and shorter surgery. Process of producing these tools are full digital and to somehow complex due to the application of many technical devices, software and protocols. To achieve efficiency, all participants in the workflow must be aware of all steps and data requirements for production of guides. This paper investigates the production process of surgical guide comprehensively, and also, encompass all the steps in process with details. Materials and Methods: This review article was based on searching Google scholar and PupMed databases considering key words: Surgical Guide, Guided surgery, digital dentistry, dental CAD/CAM, Additive manufacturing. More than 90% of the references were in English language and published after year 2010. Conclusion: Today dentistry uses many digital solutions for dairy workflow and most of these solutions are developed by engineers in various fields of knowledge. Thus, this information is essential for dentists, surgeon, clinician and laboratory technician, etc. for better collaboration and participation. Amongst, advances in surgery of dental implant have been highly significant and patients benefit from better treatment and less inconvenience. In addition, dentists do surgery more precise and easier because of considering all conditions before of surgery. Thus, it is substantial inform of all steps of production process.

Introduction: Peri-implantitis is characterized by irreversible lesions that are caused by microbial plaque, involving not only the soft tissue around the implant, but also the implant-supporting bone. In the peri-implant diseases, some cytokines are increased, and inflammatory mediators, which are observed in peri-implantitis, induce the activation of osteoclasts and bone resorption. The aim of this study was to compare the level of interleukin 23 (IL-23) in patients with peri-implantitis and those with healthy peri-implant tissue. Materials & methods: This clinical trial was conducted on 19 patients with peri-implantitis and 19 patients with healthy peri-implant tissue. The samples were collected from sulcular fluid/gingival pocket fluid by paper cone and placed in vials. The level of IL-23 was determined using ELISA reader. Furthermore, the relationship of IL-23 levels with bleeding, probing depth, and pus formation was analyzed. Data analysis was performed using independent t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Spearman test. Resin-based composite restorative materials have a substantial share in dental treatments. Their esthetic has made them patients’ first choice as restorative materials. Marginal leakage is one of their problems which leads to recurrent caries and post-operative hypersensitivity. Our aim was to evaluate the theoretical and clinical methods that have been proposed in the dental literature. Around 50 articles from Pubmed, SCOPUS and google scholar were selected and categorized in 4 groups based on the selected keywords. All the studies discussed in this paper have emphasized that there is no way to eliminate the microleakage but it can be reduced by means of some approaches. On the other hand, due to the multifactorial nature and difference of oral environment and laboratory conditions, there isn’t any certain way to define precisely. It seems that there is an absolute need for more research in this field to make the relation of theoretical results and clinical findings possible.

Background and Aims: Hydroxyapatite coating has allocated a special place in dentistry due to its biocompatibility and bioactivity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relation between the hydroxyapatite thickness and stress distribution by using finite element method. Materials and Methods: In this paper, the effect of hydroxyapatite coating thickness on dental implants was studied using finite element method in the range between 0 to 200 microns. A 3D model including one section of mandible bone was modeled by a thick layer of cortical surrounding dense cancellous and a Nobel Biocare commercial brand dental implant was simulated and analyzed under static load in the Abaqus software. Results The diagram of maximum von Mises stress versus coating thickness was plotted for the cancellous and cortical bones in the range between 0 to 200 microns. The obtained results showed that the magnitude of maximum von Mises stress of bone decreased as the hydroxyapatite coating thickness increased. Also, the thickness of coating exhibited smoother stress distribution and milder variations of maximum von Mises stress in a range between 60 to 120 microns. Conclusion: In present study, the stress was decreased in the mandible bone where hydroxyapatite coating was used. This stress reduction leads to a faster stabilization and fixation of implant in the mandible bone. Using hydroxyapatite coating as a biocompatible and bioactive material could play an important role in bone formation of implant- bone interface.

This technology permits graphic and complex 3D implant simulation and then fabrication of computer-generated surgical templates. The best position of implants planned at first by taking into consideration of encased bone density of each implants and then existing occlusion. In this paper, the evolution of Computer Guided Implantology and the many benefits achieved from this very sophisticated technology described as a literature review.

"nBackground and Aim: As composite-dentin bond strength is affected by cavity preparation and the bond strength of composite resin to new and used bur prepared dentin has not yet been evaluated, this study evaluated the effects of cutting dentin with different cutting efficacy (new and used) of burs on composite-dentin shear bond strength using self-etching primer bonding system and total etching bonding system. "nMaterials and Methods: Sixty caries free human 3rd molar were sectioned in occlosal surface to expose dentin, then polished with silicon carbide paper and randomly divided into four groups. Each group was prepared in a depth of 0.5mm of dentin, using new diamond bur, or used diamond bur. To change into a used bur, each new rough diamond bur had to work on bovine enamel for 30 minutes, under a load of 150g. Then, each group was bonded, using a total etch adhesive (single Bond) or a self etch adhesive (clearfil SE Bond) So there were 4 groups : 1-SE Bond, New bur; 2-SE Bond , used bur; 3-Single Bond , New bur ; 4-Single Bond, used bur. Similar composite capsules(Filtek Z250) were bonded to dentin surface and cured. specimens were stored in physiologic saline for 48h at 370 c , then put under shearing load to define composite - dentin shear bond strength. Results were interpreted via statistical analysis (T-test & two - way variance). "nResults: Shear bond strength of each group was as follows: 1-(27.3Mpa), 2-(33.5Mpa), 3-(16.9Mpa) 4-(19.3Mpa). Statistical analysis proved that shear bond strength of used diamond bur prepared groups (2,4) was more than new diamond bur prepared ones (1,3). This statistical difference, specially, was seen between SE Bond groups (1,2) but not between single Bond groups (3,4). Also, shear bond strength of (SE Bond) bonded groups (1,2) were more significantly than (single Bond) bonded ones (3,4). "nConclusion: This study show that Bur cutting efficiency influences composite - dentin shear bond strength especially when the adhesive is SE Bond (used bur> new bur) Also type of adhesive affects on composite - dentin shear bond strength. (SE Bond > Single Bond).

Background and Aim: The use of fiber reinforced posts in endodontically treated teeth has become increasingly common. But their retention in root canals must be considered seriously. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of light-cure and dual-cure bondings on regional bond strength of a fiber composite post.Materials and Methods: In this experimental in vitro study, 20 endodontically treated teeth were randomly divided into two groups. In the first group, a dual-cure bonding (Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus, 3M ESPE/USA) [SBMP] was used and in the other group, a light-cure bonding (Single Bond, 3M ESPE/USA) [SB] was applied according to the manufacturer's instructions. A dual-cure resin cement (Rely X ARC, 3M ESPE/USA) was used to cement the post (Glassix, Harald Nordin SA,Switzerland). Coronal 8mm of cemented posts were sectioned in equal thirds using a 0.1mm diamond disc. Each slice was polished by a soft and wet abrasive paper in order to get a 2mm thickness. Odontomas are benign tumors of odontogenic origin characterized by their slow growth. They are considered to be a common type of odontogenic tumor, but rarely occur in the primary dentition.The etiology of odontomas is unknown, although local trauma, infection and genetic factors have been suggested. Odontomas often cause disturbances in the eruption of teeth such as, impaction or delayed eruption, and retention of primary teeth and abnormalities in the position of teeth such as tipping or displacement of adjacent teeth. In this paper, a case of unerupted right mandibular primary cuspid in a 5 years old girl due to the presence of a compound odontoma is presented.

In this paper, an unusual case of pigmented dentigerous cyst in a 37-year-old Iranian man with multiple dentigerous cysts of maxilla and mandible is reported. In addition to the characteristic histopathologic features of dentigerous cyst, numerous melanin granules which were distributed throughout the epithelial lining of one of these cysts were also noted. The histochemical study using Fontana’s staining indicated that the pigment was melanin and many of the cells containing melanin were immunohistochemically positive for S-100 protein. Although no firm conclusion could be drawn from the present case regarding melanin origin in dentigerous cyst, the possible histogenesis of melanocytes in odontogenic lesions is discussed.

Various methods have already been suggested to measure the working length in root"ncanal therapy among which the use of paper point, tactile sense, radiography and electronic apex finder"ninstruments can be named. Investigations on EAL (Electronic Apex Locator) indicate that these instruments"ncan reduce the number of required radiography to a great extent. Moreover, in special cases such as patients"nwith high risk reflex, pregnant women, the mental disabled and handicapped and also in cases with special"nanatomical structures these instruments are proper substitutes for radiography."nPurpose: The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of an Iranian made apex finder instrument with"nNeosono Ultima EZ and radiography."nMaterials and Methods: This study was conducted on 51 mandibular molars, devoid of calcification, internal"nand external resorption, severe root curve or fracture, which were extracted due to periodontal disease or"nsevere caries. All the specimens were washed in 2.5% hypochlorite sodium and washing with water, kept in"n10% formalin solution, under room temperature."nResults: The accuracy of the Iranian instrument was measured (81.8%) similar to that of radiography"n(81.2%). But the accuracy of Neosono Wtima EZ was (92.9%) which was higher than the two other methods."nConclusion: No statistically significant difference was found between Neosono Ultima EZ instrument and"ntwo other groups, using SPSS 10 statistical soft ware.

Due to the differences in the composite and morphology of dentin in primary and permanent teeth, it is necessary to make improvements in bonding techniques to promote the strength of composite resins bonded to the dentinal surface, in primary teeth. The use of lower radiation, to make structural and chemical changes in dentinal surfaces has been investigated. This research was conducted to evaluate the shear strength of the composite bonded to primary teeth dentin after Nd: YAG laser radiation and acid etching for conditioning. Peripheral dentin of the buccal and lingua! surfaces of 60 extracted posterior primary teeth were exposed and polished with 600 grit with Sic paper. The teeth were divided randomly in 3 groups of 20 teeth. In group 1 etching gel, primer and adhesive of scotch bond multipurpose system (SMP), in group 2 laser at 1.6 w and 80 mj/pulse, and in group 3 laser at 2 s and 700 mj/pulse were used. Moreover, in groups 2 and 3, after laser radiation, acid etching, primer and adhesive of SMP system were applied. After necessary laboratory tests, the mean shear bond strength in MPa were 20.99±5.3 (group 1), 23.82±6.31 (group 2) and 26.58±5.59 (group 3). ANOVA, scheffe, tukey statistical tests showed that the bond strengths of group 3 were statistically higher than group 1. The frequency of dentin cohesive failures were significantly higher in groups 2 and 3, compared to group 1 that indicates a higher bond strength in these groups. Scanning electron mirographs of laser radiated surfaces, show a porous and rough surface morphology that enhances the mechanical bond of the composite.

Bone marrow transplant (BMT) has increasingly become a common treatment option for patients whom has their bone marrow affected directly or indirectly by any disease. Because of the level of immunosuppression achieved in BMT, any problems the pediatric patient presents in their oral cavity can become life- threatening and increase the length of hospital stay, the patients discomfort and the treatment cost. This paper discusses the important and unique role that pediatric dentistry has in the multi professional bone marrow transplantation team to help bring out a successful outcome through the prevention and treatment of the acute oral complications often seen in these patients.
