Vortex shedding from a circular cylinder moving at a constant acceleration is investigated experimentally. The cylinder installed in a linear-motor actuator system moves in the air at rest. The results show that the critical Reynolds number above which the self-sustained wake oscillation occurs due to the global instability of cylinder wake increases with the magnitude of the acceleration normalized by the cylinder diameter and the kinematic viscosity. A direct numerical simulation of a supersonic wake undergoing transition to turbulence has been performed. The compressible Navier-Stokes are solved to study the acoustic generation mechanism for a Mach 2 wake. High-order upwind-biased compact schemes are used for spatial derivatives and a fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme for time advancement. Navier-Stokes characteristic boundary conditions are employed in the vertical direction and periodic boundary conditions in the streamwise and spanwise directions for a time-developing DNS. The laminar wake was forced with a combination of the 2-D most unstable mode and a pair of oblique subharmonic unstable modes, which were obtained from linear stability theory for the viscous compressible equations. Forcing with a pair of oblique subharmonic modes yields streamwise/vertical counter rotating vortices in the saddle region of the plane wake. As streamwise/vertical counter rotating vortices evolve outside, their self-induction causes inclined braidlike structures to form in the wake, which are similar to the observations in the experimental supersonic flat plate wake transition. The formation mechanism of the 'fingers' induced artificially by a piece of fine wire set to perturb the flow is clarified in the wake of circular cylinder. The 'fingers' are induced at the both locations outside of the axis of the wire-wake, where the phase of the vortex shedding locally differs from the phase at the other part of the cylinder. The vortex streets shedding from the near wake of the cylinder shows extremely stable configuration in the near region of the axis of the wire-wake. The 'fingers' are consecutively formed in self-sustained manner since the local discrepancy of the phase propagates perpendicular to the vortex axis toward the next shedding vortices. The relation between the observation and the measurement are discussed. Two methods are complementary to each other in a full understanding of the unsteady vortex flows, since the observation of vortex patterns is useful to know the spatial variation of the flow at an instant and the measurement of velocity fluctuation is useful to know the temporal variation of the flow at a local point. In order to know both spatial and temporal variation of vortex flows, a new method was developed to measure the velocity field by means of hydrogen bubble techniques. The formation process of the 'Fingers' induced artificially by a fine wire set to perturb the flow is clarified in the wake of a circular cylinder. At the location where the 'Fingers' are formed, the shedding frequency of the vortices in the near wake of the cylinder is slightly lower than the shedding frequency at the same location without 'Fingers'. This local discrepancy of the shedding frequency creates the time variation of the phase difference of the vortex shedding in the spanwise direction. When the phase difference increases to some extent, a vortex filament reconnects the other vortex filament and the phase difference diminishes temporarily. The Reynolds number (based on the diameter d) tested is 420. Two end plates with a separation distance of 10d are used to maintain the near-wake flow two dimensional. A sensor hot-wire probe is located at the y-maximum position of u-fluctuation at x = 1.5d. The u-fluctuation signal is feedback to the near-wake, with proper phase shift and amplitude through a loudspeaker so as to minimize the vortical and thus to stabilize the near-wake flow. It is found that the active control is able to delay the formation of the vortex street but unable to completely suppress it. The growth of wave-disturbances into the vortex street is examined by introducing initially small-amplitude disturbances using a loud-speaker, at a cylinder Reynolds number R = 3.2 x 10 (exp 3). On the basis of the results of mu-fluctuation measurements and stability calculations it is shown that the formation process is initially controlled by wave-disturbances similar to those of symmetric mu, which evolve into the antisymmetric type downstream and eventually into vortex street. The spectra of velocity fluctuation at one point which is located immediately downstream of the absolute instability region were found to correspond intimately to the global structure of the vortex street. The chaotic vortex streets appear in the two ranges both around the lower and the upper boundaries of the lock-in range for the frequency of the cylinder oscillation. In the ranges outside the lock-in and the chaotic ranges, the velocity fluctuations become quasi-periodic states. The variation of the structure of the vortex streets can be interpreted as a result of nonlinear interaction between the pattern created by the oscillation of the cylinder and the pattern formed by natural shedding of the vortices. Wake structure behind an NACA0012 with no incidence was examined to scrutinize the frequency selection mechanism of growing disturbances at Re = 7,200 based on the wing chord and the free-stream velocity. Two different kinds of unstable disturbances, which exponentially grow in space, were observed. The minor disturbance is due to convective instability, while the origin of the major one may be attributed to absolute instability. To obtain a better understanding of the vortex sound the present study considers the sound generation by oscillating vortex pair and vortex ring. The vortex pair is such that the two vortex filaments maintain their constant distance, with their mutually sign-different circulations of the same intensity varying in time periodically. For the case of oscillating vortex ring the same time-varying vortex filament maintains a rectangle shape with a constant enclosing area. We have analyzed the far-field sound generated by the present 2D and 3D oscillating vortex systems in the otherwise calm space and obtained closed form expressions for the sound pressure. The present flow models are applied to the Karman vortex street of a circular cylinder, in particular, to the vortex formation region immediately behind the cylinder in order to obtain the far-field sound. Some features of the flow were disclosed; the amplitude of lift fluctuation depends on the Reynolds number. When the Reynolds number is above 47.3, the amplitude of lift fluctuation grows in time, which leads to the generation of Karman vortex street. When the Reynolds number is below 47.3, it decays slowly not to generate the vortex street. 円柱後流の可視化実験のビデオ画像から, 画像処理による解析システムを使って, 速度や渦度の空間分布を比較的能率よく求める1つの方法を開発した. そして, この方法により, カルマン渦列の生成・崩壊の過程における渦度分布の時間発展を求めることができた. その結果, レイノルズ数が103の場合には, カルマン渦列がいったん形成されるが, その後で主に渦列方向 (円柱の進行方向) への渦度の拡散がみられた. 従って, このときには, 渦列の崩壊は, 単純な二重渦層型の近似平行流への移行にすぎないようにみえる.

円柱後流の可視化実験のビデオ画像から，画像処理装置を用いて，速度および渦度分布の時間発展を求めた．カルマン渦列の崩壊と二次渦列の生成の過程を渦度分布の変化より捉えることができた．カルマン渦列の崩壊は，渦度の流れ方向への拡散による，近似平行二重渦層流れへの移行であると思われる．また，二次渦列の生成はこの流れの不安定性によると思われる．

円柱及び平板の後流を流れの可視化技術及び熱線流速計技術を用いて調べた．その結果，すべてのカルマン渦列は不規則に揺いでおり，その速度変動のパワースペクトルは広い周波数範囲に広がる連続スペクトルであることが判明した．

円柱後流に生じるカルマン渦列の特性について，アルミニューム粉末法を用いて，円柱に対して縦断的に可視化することにより調べた．求めた特性長は，一次渦列と二次渦列の波長及び一次渦列の崩壊する位置である．調べたレイノルズ数の範囲は90～140である．
