Food was classified into common food and food with alleged health benefits in Japan in 2000. Furthermore, food with alleged health benefits was food for specified health uses and food with alleged nutrient function. The latter is a standard type while the former is the individual examination permission type. A supplement is classified under the category of food with alleged nutrient function and the so-called "health food" group. A supplement is a food developed to supply an insufficient nutrient. Since there is a limitation to the kind of nutrient that can be supplied by the supplement, it is necessary to consider common food independently. Many users judge that the ingestion amounts of a nutrient are easily insufficient, without improving eating habit disorders. such as skipping meals and an unbalanced diet. The evaluation of an insufficient nutrient is very difficult. Reports that point out the insufficiency of the ingestion of many nutrients have problems in evaluating the nutritional status only with dietary estimation. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the insufficient nutrient first. For this, appropriate nutritional diagnosis or evaluation in the body, namely nutritional assessments are required. Evaluation of rite nutritional status basically has to be performed by anthropometrical measurement, chemical inspection, subjective objective evaluation and dietary estimation. By allowing the range from the Recommended Dietary Allowance to the amount of permissible maximum ingestion be the amount of ingestion targets in Japan, many Japanese can satisfy their required nutrient quantity in this range. When using a supplement, finally, it is necessary to consider the urgency in question, critical nature, importance, necessity, etc., and to conduct careful investigations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
