human personality ,national character ,national identity ,cultural personality ,cultural model ,Arts in general ,NX1-820 - Abstract
The study represents an attempt to update and reconfirm some important concepts, such as: human personality, national character, national identity, cultural identity/personality, cultural model. Different points of view on the respective concepts are analyzed, with reference to the works of some notorious anthropologists and philosophers: D. Reisman, Margaret Mead, Max Weber, R. Linton, C. Noica, L. Blaga, A Mihu, V. Pâslaru et al. The author of the article claims that although the greatest importance in the formation of personality has the environment, however the individual’s personality in formation is shaped by culture, as in a society with a sufficiently stable culture, the individual integrates more and more as he gets older, reaffirms his values, attitudes, adhering to the behavior that his culture prescribes. The person who begins his life in one culture and, later, continues it in another, is forced to adhere to patterns of behavior that do not agree with his own values, attitudes. The article refers to the Bessarabian society, which during the Russian and Soviet empires were forced to impose foreign cultural models, which had a devastating impact on the natives. Made in a national and universal context, the transformation of the individual from a biological being into a cultural, intellectual-spiritual one is possible through an education based on national values, produced by the nation to which the educable belong.

MEDIEVAL literature , *NATIONAL character , *OLD Norse philology , *PHILOLOGY , *NINETEENTH century , *NORWEGIANS , *DANES - Abstract
The article "Old Norse Philology and National Identity in the Long 19th Century" discusses the significance of Old Norse philology for national identity in the 19th century. Particularly in Denmark, the study of Old Norse literature gained importance in the early 19th century. Icelanders played an important role in the exploration of medieval texts due to their better language skills. However, there were disputes about who owned the heritage of medieval literature. The article contains twelve contributions that shed light on the conflicts between Danes, Icelanders, and Norwegians. It also addresses the role of individuals such as Rasmus Rask and the translations of the sagas. The collaboration between Danes and Icelanders was not always conflict-free, and tensions arose between the two groups. The article deals with the question of who owns the heritage of Old Norse literature, with Danes, Norwegians, and Icelanders all claiming it. There are nationalist tendencies in which both Icelanders and Norwegians try to strengthen their position against Denmark. The article also reports on various protagonists of Old Norse research, such as Sveinbjörn Egilsson and Jón Sigurðsson. Finnur Jónsson is referred to as the "Editor of everything," and his editions of Old Norse texts are praised, although he also receives criticism for his selection and his literary-historical works. The question of the origin of the "Poetic Edda" is also discussed, with ideological and political aspects playing a role. The article demonstrates the close connection between the exploration of medieval literature and politics in Scandinavia. [Extracted from the article]

In the 19
th century, the return of the German-language university in Tartu played a crucial role in the education, science, and cultural history of the Russian Empire’s Baltic provinces. The newly established German-language university enjoyed significant autonomy, attracting professors primarily from Germany. Following the German university model, students began forming corporate associations in the early decades of the 19th century. Despite being officially prohibited at the start of the century, the legalisation of student organisations in Tartu in 1855 led to their flourishing over the next few decades. Nineteenth-century societal developments in Europe brought significant changes in communication. Print graphics primarily drove visual aspects during the first half of the century. Technological advancements allowed for more extensive and affordable print runs, facilitating wider distribution of images and enabling authors as well as publishers to respond swiftly to public needs and expectations. These images depicted local life and prominent buildings, contributing to developing national identities in 19th -century Europe by fostering patriotic sentiments and regional self-awareness. Tartu emerged as a local centre for print graphics in the second quarter of the 19th century. Initially, engravers and artists focused on portraying new university buildings, but from the 1850s onwards, they also began depicting colourful student traditions. Given that Baltic-German fraternities played a significant role in Tartu student life, the customs and lifestyle of Tartu students were portrayed. These printed images of student life in Tartu were created for broader audiences in elegant albums, or for circulation within the narrower circle of fraternity members and alumni. An exciting and little-known example of this is Ludwig Ulmann’s picture series from 1873, created for the 50th anniversary of the Tartu Baltic-German student fraternity Fraternitas Rigensis. The series provides a rare glimpse into the self-reflection of 19th -century Tartu fraternities. Although Ulmann, an amateur artist, approached the theme with satirical and comical ease, a closer analysis reveals the rich traditions within the Baltic-German fraternities. Most selected scenes are based on historical student practices, local personalities, or events. However, Ulmann also drew inspiration from the famous programmatic Wilhelm von Kaulbach mural in Berlin’s Neues Museum, cleverly incorporating elements from classical art into his work. In the local visual culture of the 19th Century, Tartu University quickly found its place as a distinct theme. The dissemination of these images among educated German minorities in all three Baltic provinces reinforced Tartu University’s image as a unifying force in Baltic-German society. The Imperial University of Tartu served as a natural and efficient platform for the local German-educated intelligentsia, and its students and alumni quickly developed a shared mentality. More specifically, the Baltic-German student fraternities operating at Tartu University actively supported local German cultural and intellectual self-awareness, particularly the more conservative and preservative wing. In this way, the printed graphics depicting student life in Tartu are now primarily significant and poignant testimonies of the former glory days of the Baltic-German fraternities. The book "Dansk Sproghistorie" is an extensive Danish language history that covers the development of Danish from the oldest runic inscriptions to computer-mediated communication. It consists of six volumes with a total of 21 chapters and was written by Ebba Hjorth and a team of authors. The first volume, titled "Dansk tager form" (Danish Takes Shape), covers the source materials, theoretical perspectives on language and language history, the significance of Danish for national identity, and the classification of Danish within the Indo-European language family. Various language histories, dictionaries, grammars, and pronunciation manuals are also presented. The book also covers the history of Danish writing from runes to digital script. The third volume of the book, "DS - Dansk Sproghistorie," focuses on the inflection and syntax of the Danish language. The book is divided into four chapters and concentrates on describing individual areas of the language. It also discusses the development of vocabulary and the influences of other languages on Danish. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the development of the Danish language and its grammatical structures. [Extracted from the article]

11. „Their most precious posession"? - Das chinesische Face als Marker kontingenter kultureller Differenzierung.
- Author

Dederichs, Anno
- Abstract
Face is widely recognized as an important concept of social practice and communication in China. In contrast, the assumption of the existence of a "cultural character" as a singular entity - of which the "Chinese face" would be a cornerstone - is considered problematic due to the implications of essentializing and culturalizing determinism in anthropology. In this article, I argue that the concept of Face as a Chinese character trait added a culturalist level of description to tell apart the "other" that was often marked as inferior to the Westerners in the late 19th century. While phrases such as "losing face," "saving face," and "giving face" have since found their way into European languages as loan words from Chinese, Face continues to serve as a stereotype and emic concept for cultural difference. However, the use of Face as a marker does not necessarily hierarchize differences, it's use is contingent. This article will show how Face has been associated with changing categories of difference and conceptualizations of China over time in both Western and Chinese discourse. The article thus combines historical research of differentiation processes with systematic considerations on the functioning of difference markers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines Kosovar football in the context of national identity, with the designation of the national team causing much debate in the country. It aims to use lexical frame analysis to examine the impact of specific frames and argumentation patterns on the use and meaning of the terms kombëtar(e) (Engl. national) and përfaqësuese (Engl. representation) in relation to the designation of the Kosovar football team. The incipient discussion on the nation has gained particular intensity since Kosovo's admission as an equal member of UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) and FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), both in 2016. Whether Kosovo has a "national football team" or only a "representation of Kosovo" continues to polarise public discourse. Previous studies have confirmed that the relationship between sport and national identity is complex and multifaceted. This article will delve into the complexity and diversity of the discussion in the case of Kosovo with potential ramifications for the national political discourse in the youngest European nation. The article deals with Irish neutrality during the Second World War. Ireland remained neutral throughout the entire war, which brought about political challenges. However, the consistent application of the principle of neutrality by the government of Éamon de Valera led to criticism, particularly from Winston Churchill. The duration of Irish neutrality is disputed, and there were various challenges from different sides during the war. The Irish government pursued a policy of "safe destruction" to ensure the country's neutrality. The economic impact of neutrality was negative for Ireland, as the country did not receive any economic benefits and was faced with poverty and emigration. Although Ireland was officially neutral, there was secret cooperation with the Allies. Irish neutrality continues to shape the national identity of the country to this day. In the book "Religious Otherness and National Identity in Scandinavia, ca. 1790-1960: The Construction of Jews, Mormons, and Jesuits as Anti-Citizens and Enemies of Society," historian Frode Ulvund examines the relationship between religion and politics in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. He analyzes the legal positioning of Jews, Mormons, and Jesuits in these countries and shows how they were perceived as threats to the state and society. Ulvund also considers the development of the concept of tolerance and the debates on religious pluralism in the early modern period. The book provides a nuanced insight into the complex debate and demonstrates the pragmatic tolerance of these religious groups by political-administrative bodies, despite the rejection by parts of the Lutheran state churches. Ulvund's work is of interest to historians and offers a transnational perspective on identity formation in Scandinavia. [Extracted from the article]

DUAL nationality , *NATIONAL character , *CITIZENSHIP - Abstract
The article "The Citizenship of South Tyroleans. Legal and Political Aspects" by Otto Mahlknecht addresses the question of dual citizenship for South Tyroleans. Although the South Tyrol issue seems to be resolved at the international level, Italy does not accept the granting of Austrian citizenship to individuals residing in South Tyrol. The author examines the historical and controversial aspects of this question and sheds light on them from various perspectives. The article shows that the political support for dual citizenship has failed in Vienna and provides three reasons for this. The author argues that clinging to a single national identity has no future and that dual citizenship can lead to a common European identity. [Extracted from the article]

The present article views different ways of language realization of the bilingual concepts fændag/ road and Transcam/ Transcam and their significance in the internet-segment of the South Ossetian political communication. Peculiarities of the mentality of the South Ossetian people are identified and studied by means of linguocognitive analysis of the concept. Different ways of actualization of the present concept are conditioned by a particular socio-cultural and political context. This approach contributes to viewing extralinguistic processes as the main factors of conceptosphere development and reveals important aspects of conceptual world view in a broad cultural and socio-political context interaction. Texts of comments and discussions at different Internet sites(15) and Forums (17)were used as the materials for the research. The results of the present research prove that comprehension of different meaning layers of the metaphorical concepts fændag/road and Transcam/ Transcam, playing a significant role in the system of South Ossetian linguocultural community values, is determined by the linguistic world view of the Ossetian language and mentality carriers, which in its turn depends on the cultural traditions of the people and comes from an individual’s specifically structured idea of the existing reality. Internet segment of the political communication reflects importance of the metaphorical concepts fændag/ road and Transcam/Transcam in historical, political and functional aspects.

Compared to the Habsburg era, when Yiddish writings were hardly printed in Bukovina - due to the centralized policy of Vienna and the openness towards integration and assimilation on the part of numerous Bukovinian Jews, as well as because of the status of Yiddish as the language of uneducated Jews - the Yiddish printing industry, as well as the Yiddish libraries didn't develop until the early 1920s, simultaneously with the emergence of national identity concepts. This paper is based on descriptive research and discusses the importance of these institutions in shaping trajectories of cultural, national and linguistic identities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the focus of this article is the music collection by O. Negrutsi „Spring Mood”, published in 2009 and edited by I .Stolyar. The piano Miniatures, that are different in variety of artistic ideas and content, are included in this anthology. All the works included in this collection have a number of teaching and performing features, a typical figurative and emotional system, evident technical issues based on national folklore. All this makes them indispensable for the pedagogical and concert repertoire of the Special Piano course in the secondary and higher educational institutions of the Republic of Moldova.

In current historiography, the German General Staff with its responsibility for war planning and military intelligence is usually playing a key role in the emergence of World War One. Surprisingly, no recent study focuses the military agency's perceptions of Russia and the Russian people, although these notions build an important part of the bilateral relationship between the Russian and the German Empire. This study shows that the views of certain leading General Staff officers about Russia were based for the most part on long-standing Russophobe resentments felt by the German bourgeoisie. Most of the German General Staff members thought of their eastern neighbor as a vast and hostile country with a barbaric and despotic government, while the Russian people were seen as dumb and lazy, frugal and naive. In addition, German perceptions were characterized by a sort of flamboyant ambiguity, with contempt and disdain going hand in hand with fear of Russia's irresistible demographic economic and military growth. Together with underestimation of the Russian national character, especially those fearful German perceptions were an important factor in the German military leadership's decision to go to war in July 1914. ETHNICITY , *SICILIANS , *NATIONAL character - Abstract
This article examines Olaf Rader's argument that emperor Frederick II, born in Italy and brought up in Sicily, was a „Sicilian to the core" („durch und durch Sizilianer"), as Leopold von Ranke stated in the second half of the 19th century, and therefore, as Johannes Haller wrote in the first half of the 1900s, „the first foreigner on the German throne". According to this interpretation, he supposedly prioritized the kingdom of Sicily, which he had inherited from his mother Constance of Hauteville, and neglected the German part of the Roman empire, in contrast to his grandfather Frederick I Barbarossa. This argument is not entirely convincing since attributing a Sicilian identity to Frederick II overlooks the fact that his move to Germany at the age of 17 and his eight-year stay there immersed him in a German context, returning him to his Swabian roots. Furthermore, Frederick II tenaciously defended the interests of the German part of the empire against the papacy and the northern cities, using the considerable economic resources of the kingdom of Sicily to support his military campaigns. Since at that time the physical presence of the sovereign was particularly important to the practice of government, Frederick resolved the problem of his absence from Germany, which lacked administrative structures comparable to those in Italy, by delegating his sons - firstly Henry (VII) and later Corrado IV - to represent him in Germany. The view of Frederick II as „the Sicilian on the imperial throne" is unconvincing because it is based on 19th and 20th century concepts such as people, nation and national identity that are not applicable to the Middle Ages. NEUTRALITY ,INTERNATIONAL relations ,BATTLE of Melegnano, Italy, 1515 ,MILITARY historiography ,NATIONAL character - Abstract
It has only been since the late 17th century that Swiss defined their status, in foreign policy terms and in the context of an emerging law of nations, as neutral. Already at that time, interestingly enough, there were occasional attempts to trace this neutrality back to 1515/ 16. But on the one hand, the dominant narrative was military and focused on the heroic retreat of the vanquished but not overcome. On the other hand, the discourse had an element of moral philosophy, interpreting serving in foreign armies in Italy as decadent and hence paving the way for a redemptive Reformation. The characterization «neutral since Marignano» developed over many stages, and was formulated against clear resistance from those most knowledgeable about the Italian wars, including Ernst Gagliardi and Emil Usteri. It also appears, in the aftermath of the Wohlgemuth affair, in the works of Carl Hilty, Felix Calonder and the liberal national historians Oechsli, Dändliker and Dierauer, and during the First World War in Emil Dürr's oeuvre. It is also evident in the writings about the «spiritual defense of the country» around 1940, and then again, and properly, around 1965 during the Cold War, with its increasing emphasis on armed neutrality. The role that was assigned to language in the search for identity varies considerably depending on the model of the nation adopted. It is precisely the „German” model, an organic model of nation, that dominates Russia nowadays. Taking this into consideration, language is considered to be one of the principles, if not the principle unifying the nation. The author makes a reasoned analysis of the intellectual sources of the Russian linguistic ethnocentric language which, drawing on the work of the ideologues of German romanticism itself, has as main objective isolating the representations of the world, stereotypes of behavior and psychological reactions that the Russian language imposes on the native speaker, thus determining its „national character”. Concluding his study, the author sketches the portrait of a Russian in a polemic manner, just as it can be shown in the light of these linguistic investigations.

The chapter explores the ideas of "Europe" in the discourse of Hungarian politicians, historians and intellectuals from the end of the 18th century until the 1980s. What notions of "Europe" did they coin? Which plans of supranational federations did they bring up? What was the place of Hungary within "Europe" - was it "West", "East" or the "Center"? How did they instrumentalise "Europe" to serve specific purposes? It is shown that most of the time, especially in times of crisis, "Europe" played a major role in Hungary. It served as a vanishing point for hopes and dreams of modernisation and democratisation that were ascribed to be naturally "European" or "Western", but also for nationalist and even imperialist visions of a strong Hungary attached to the "East". Mostly, however, Hungary was described as forming a "Center", incorporating characteristics of both the "West" and the "East" and therefore being a "Europe in little". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The formation of princely territories as polities within the Empire (Land) is a much discussed issue in German constitutional history. In order to define the beginnings of this development in the marches of Styria, Austria and Meißen, this paper collects evidence from written sources for a shared sense of identity, common political interests and the scope of decision making of the region’s nobility. In the case of Styria, the process seems to have started around 1100 and reached its decisive stage in the second quarter of the 12th century. In Austria an interest group among the nobles formed in the mid-11th century, and an exclusive sense of identity is discernible from c. 1100 onwards. The emergence of Meißen as a Land began tentatively about 1125 and took clearer shape only towards the end of the century. While the Investiture Contest triggered the development in none of these cases, it made some impact. More important, however, were local circumstances and the extent of shared interests among the margraves and the other nobility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stereotypes in sports coverage depict national teams as individual subjects with a firm 'character,' which remains constant over a long period of time. In so doing, it is assumed that the attributed national characters can be 'recognised' in every individual of a nation and, ultimately, all of their (not only footballing) actions. This article about the coverage of the football World Cups and European Championships since 2002 examines such attributions. At first, it is shown that such national stereotypes form a system that is based on distinct positions. On this basis, confusions of the system of national stereotypes relating to football, which, for example, arise out of the fact that a national team temporarily adopts another team's playing style, are examined. However, such confusions are mostly revised during and at the end of international tournaments, with the result that the system of national stereotypes recently can rather be understood as a construction kit of elements which can be combined in various ways frequently without endangering the system. Faddey Boulgarin and the Northern Bee : the sources of mass literature in RussiaThe tradition of popular reading in Russia originated in the second half of the eighteenth century, when specimens of the first national novels – the works of Mikhail Chulkov, Matvej Komarov, Fedor Emin, etc. – were published along with numerous translations of foreign texts (mainly French). However, it is Faddey Bulgarin who should be looked upon as the real founding father of Russian popular literature. Bulgarin was the editor of the newspaper "The Northern bee", which enjoyed a great success in Russia, not only in the 1820s, but later as well. He was also the author of the first bestseller in the history of Russian prose, i.e. Ivan Vyjigin (1829). Bulgarin – the leading figure of the Russian mass reading – was harshly criticized by Pushkin, and later was negatively assessed by the Soviet literary criticism. His role in the literary evolution was revised only at the end of the twentieth century. In his novel Vyjigin Bulgarin, combines a variety of narrative traditions and creates a model of light reading, which pretends to reflect Russian national identity.
