Ansamitocine sind antiproliferative Sekundärmetaboliten aus Actinosynnema pretiosum. Sie bestehen aus einem Polyketid Makrolactam mit AHBA als Starteinheit der Biosynthese. Unter Verwendung von DAHBA-Mutanten wurde mithilfe der Mutasynthese bereits eine große Vielfalt biologisch aktiver Ansamitocin-Derivate erzeugt. Kürzlich wurde eine weitere Mutante von A. pretiosum beschrieben, der sowohl die Gene für die AHBA-Synthese als auch die Gene für die Post-Polyketid-Modifikation fehlen. Dieser Stamm, AH1 genannt, produziert nach Fütterung mit verschiedenen Aminobenzoesäuren Proansamitocin-Derivate, wenn auch in geringerer Ausbeute als bei der ursprünglichen DAHBA-Ausgangsmutante. Besonders interessant waren die Funde eines Makrolacton-Proansamitocin-Derivats nach Fütterung mit einer Hydroxymethylbenzoesäure. Im ersten Teil dieser Studie wurde das Substratspektrum des Stammes AH1 untersucht und neue Proansamitocin-Derivate charakterisiert. Es wurden Studien zur Verbesserung der Kulturbedingungen für diesen neuen Stamm durchgeführt. Ziel dieser Studie war die Isolierung großer Mengen des Makrolacton-Proansamitocin-Derivats durch eine 25-Liter- Fermentation unter Verwendung des BIOSTAT®CultiBag RM-Reaktors. Jedoch konnte das gewünschte Makrolacton unter diesen Bedingungen nicht isoliert werden. Im zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit wurde ein neues SPION-Antibiotika-Konjugat synthetisiert, bei dem das Antibiotikum über einen thermosensitiven Linker an das SPION gebunden ist. Die Verwendung von SPIONs zur thermoselektiven Freisetzung nach induktiver Erwärmung ist ein vielversprechendes Werkzeug für neuartige Arzneimittelsysteme. Ein neuer thermosensitiver Linker für die Freisetzung von Carbonsäuren wurde entwickelt und getestet. Dieser Linker zeigte eine schnelle Freisetzung von Nalidixinsäure bei 95 °C in weniger als 30 min, während bei 37 °C über mehrere Stunden keine signifikante Freisetzung beobachtet wurde. Anschließend wurde Nalidixinsäure über diesen Linker mit MagSilica® SPIONs verknüpft, und es wurde eine Freisetzung bei induktiver Erwärmung beobachtet.

Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Untersuchung von generativ, mittels Tintenstrahl-drucker gefertigten Leiterbahnen. Im Anschluss werden diese einer thermischen Sinterung unterzogen, um die gewünschte elektrische Leitfähigkeit zu erzeugen. Mit Hilfe diverser Analysemethoden - Lichtmikroskop, Profilometer zur Messung der Schichtdicke, Messung des elektrischen Widerstandes, Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) und der Messung der Oberflächenrauheit - werden die Veränderungen der Proben vor und nach der Sinterung ermittelt und anschließend diskutiert. Der erste Abschnitt dieser Arbeit beginnt mit einer Einführung in der die Ausgangslage, der Stand der Technik, die Forschungsfragen und die Anforderungen dargelegt werden. Des Weiteren wird der Kontext der Arbeit, der Neuigkeitswert und die Bedeutung, die Ergebnisse und die Rahmenbedingungen genannt. Der folgende Abschnitt behandelt sämtliche theoretische Grundlagen, die für das Verständnis der Arbeit erforderlich sind. Dazu zählen die Verfahren zum digitalen Druck von Leiterbahnen, die thermische Sinterung der Leiterbahnen zur Erreichung einer definierten elektrischen Leitfähigkeit, die Funktionsweise eines Atomic Force Microscopes, die Vier-Punkt Widerstandsmessung und abschließend die Methodik zur Messung der Schichtdicke der gedruckten Proben. Im nächsten Hauptkapitel werden die verwendenden (Mess-) Geräte und Tintenwerkstoffe vorgestellt. Dabei liegt bei den Messinstrumenten der Fokus vor allem auf einer Thematisierung der jeweiligen Bedienung bzw. Messdatenauswertung. Danach folgt die Dokumentation der Versuchsdurchführung. Dabei wird zu Beginn eine Übersicht der durchgeführten Analysemethoden je Probe gezeigt. Im Anschluss daran werden sämtliche durchgeführte Untersuchungen dargelegt und die Messergebnisse detailliert beschrieben. Abschließend werden die Messergebnisse aus den Bereichen Flächenrauheit, Widerstandsmessung und den Untersuchungen mittels des AFM diskutiert und die dadurch gewonnen Erkenntnisse dargelegt. Es stellt sich heraus, dass die Flächenrauheit mit steigender Sintertemperatur deutlich stärker schwankt, woraus sich ableiten lässt, dass die Oberfläche einer physikalischen Veränderung, hervorgerufen durch die Sinterung, unterworfen ist. Als zentrale Erkenntnis zeigt sich, dass der elektrische Widerstand mit steigender Sintertemperatur deutlich abnimmt. Abgeschlossen wird die Arbeit mit einem Ausblick und Möglichkeiten zur Erweiterung dieser Abschlussarbeit. Die Masterarbeit wurde im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojektes („Digitalisierung durch gedruckte Elektronik“), welches durch die MA23 gefördert wird, durchgeführt. This work deals with the investigation of generative, inkjet-printed conductor paths. These are then thermally sintered to produce the desired electrical conductivity. Using various analysis methods - optical microscope, profilometer for measuring the layer thickness, measurement of electrical resistance, atomic force microscope (AFM) and measurement of surface roughness - the changes in the samples before and after sintering are determined and then discussed. In the first section, this thesis provides an introduction, in which the initial situation, the state of the art, the research questions and the requirements, are stated. Furthermore, the context of the work, the newness value and the importance, the results and the framework conditions, are mentioned. The following section covers all theoretical basics necessary for understanding the work. This includes the procedures for digital printing of conductive tracks, thermal sintering of the conductive tracks - to achieve a defined electrical conductivity, the operation of an Atomic Force Microscope, the four-point resistance measurement and finally the methodology for measuring the layer thickness of the printed samples. In the next main chapter, the (measuring) devices and ink materials used are presented. In the case of the measuring instruments, the focus is primarily on discussing their operation and the evaluation of measurement data. This is followed by the documentation of the test procedure. At the beginning, an overview of the analysis methods carried out is shown for each sample. Subsequently, all the tests performed are presented and the measurement results are described in detail. Finally, the results of the surface roughness measurements, the resistivity measurements and the AFM investigations are discussed, and the findings are presented. It turns out that the surface roughness fluctuates significantly more with increasing sintering temperature, from which it can be concluded that the surface is undergoing a physical modification due to the sintering process. The main result is that the electrical resistance decreases significantly with increasing sintering temperature. The work is concluded with an outlook and possibilities for extending this master thesis. Zinkoxid-Nanopartikel (ZnO-NP) finden in vielen Produkten des täglichen Verbrauchs Verwendung. Daten über die toxikologischen Eigenschaften von ZnO-NP werden kontrovers diskutiert. Die menschliche Haut ist in Bezug auf die ZnO-NP Exposition das wichtigste Kontakt-Organ. Intakte Haut stellt eine suffiziente Barriere gegenüber NP dar. Bei defekter Haut ist ein Kontakt zu den proliferierenden Stammzellen möglich, sodass diese als wichtiges toxikologische Ziel für NP darstellen. Das Ziel dieser Dissertation war die Bewertung der genotoxischen und zytotoxischen Effekte an humanen mesenchymalen Stammzellen (hMSC) durch niedrig dosierte ZnO-NP nach 24 stündiger Exposition, repetitiven Expositionen und im Langzeitversuch bis zu 6 Wochen. Zytotoxische Wirkungen von ZnO-NP wurden mit 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromid-Test (MTT) gemessen. Darüber hinaus wurde die Genotoxizität durch den Comet-Assay bewertet. Zur Langzeitbeobachtung bis zu 6 Wochen wurde die Transmissionselektronenmikroskopie (TEM) verwendet. Zytotoxizität nach 24-stündiger ZnO-NP-Exposition war ab einer Konzentration von 50 µg/ml nachweisbar. Genotoxizität konnten bereits bei Konzentrationen von 1 und 10 µg/ml ZnO-NP beschrieben werden. Wiederholte Exposition verstärkte die Zyto-, aber nicht die Genotoxizität. Eine intrazelluläre NP-Akkumulation mit Penetration der Zellorganelle wurde bei einer Exposition bis zu 6 Wochen beobachtet. Die Ergebnisse deuten auf zytotoxische und genotoxisches Effekte von ZnO-NP hin. Bereits geringe Dosen von ZnO-NP können bei wiederholter Exposition toxische Wirkungen hervorrufen sowie eine langfristige Zellakkumulation. Diese Daten sollten bei der Verwendung von ZnO-NP an geschädigter Haut berücksichtigt werden., Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NP) are widely used in many products of daily consumption. Data on the toxicological properties of the ZnO-NP used are discussed controversially. Human skin is the most important organ in terms of ZnO-NP exposure. Intact skin has been shown to provide an adequate barrier against NPs, while defective skin allows NP contact with proliferating cells. Among proliferating cells, stem cells are the main toxicological target for NPs. Therefore, the aim of this dissertation was to evaluate the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) by low-dose ZnO-NP after 24 hours of exposure, repetitive exposures and in long-term experiments up to 6 weeks. Cytotoxic effects of ZnO-NP were measured with 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide test (MTT). In addition, genotoxicity was assessed by the comet assay. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used for long-term observation after 6 exposure periods. The results of the study show that ZnO-NP has a cytotoxic effect starting at high concentrations of 50 µg/mL and could demonstrate genotoxic effects in hMSC exposed to 1 and 10 µg/ml ZnO-NP. Repeated exposure enhanced cytotoxicity but not genotoxicity. Intracellular NP accumulation with penetration of the cell organelles was observed at exposure up to 6 weeks. The results indicate the cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of ZnO-NP. Even small doses of ZnO-NP can cause toxic effects with repeated exposure and long-term cell accumulation. These data should be considered when using ZnO-NP on damaged skin.

A low pressure impactor is used to measure the mechanical stability of nanoparticle agglomerates. The stability at different impaction velocities is quantified as changes in the projection area of agglomerate fragments deposited on TEM grids mounted on the impaction plate. Platinum particles produced in a spark discharge generator are used as model particles. The mechanical stability of unmodified Pt-agglomerates is compared with the ones of thermally pretreated and coated agglomerates. The coatings are produced in a plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition process using the post-discharge environment of a dielectric barrier discharge. The coating process allows the coating of particles with silica at ambient temperature and so minimizes structural changes of the agglomerates before impaction. The precursors utilized are tetraethyl orthosilicate for silica and hexamethyldisiloxane for silica-organic coatings. Both coatings improve the stability of the agglomerates as indicated by reduced structural changes during impaction. The silica-organic coating, which is applied at 200 °C, seems to prevent sinter-related changes to the particles, which is observed for the uncoated particles at this temperature. This is further corroborated by the deposition behavior of these coated particles, which resembles more that of the original particles at 24 °C. Furthermore, the rebound behavior of coated agglomerates impacting on the TEM grid is shown. It is found that a minority of the particles rebound back from the TEM grid into the gas, which occurs in parallel to the structural changes.

Here, amorphous silica nanoparticles (NPs), one of the most abundant nanomaterials, are used as an example to illustrate the utmost importance of surface coverage by functional groups which critically determines biocompatibility. Silica NPs are functionalized with increasing amounts of amino groups, and the number of surface exposed groups is quantified and characterized by detailed NMR and fluorescamine binding studies. Subsequent biocompatibility studies in the absence of serum demonstrate that, irrespective of surface modification, both plain and amine-modified silica NPs trigger cell death in RAW 264.7 macrophages. The in vitro results can be confirmed in vivo and are predictive for the inflammatory potential in murine lungs. In the presence of serum proteins, on the other hand, a replacement of only 10% of surface-active silanol groups by amines is sufficient to suppress cytotoxicity, emphasizing the relevance of exposure conditions. Mechanistic investigations identify a key role of lysosomal injury for cytotoxicity only in the presence, but not in the absence, of serum proteins. In conclusion, this work shows the critical need to rigorously characterize the surface coverage of NPs by their constituent functional groups, as well as the impact of serum, to reliably establish quantitative nanostructure activity relationships and develop safe nanomaterials.

Summary The present phenomenon, i.e. enhancement of mass transfer coefficient in liquid–liquid extraction operation is a complex one and it cannot be reasoned out by any logic based model, so it is find out by experimental data based model. The present investigation is focused on the behaviour of nanofluid in the liquid–liquid extraction process. The chemical system of toluene–acetic acid–water was used, and nanofluids containing 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% (V/V) of zinc oxide nanoparticles of size 48.79 nm synthesised by chemical precipitation method. Maximum enhancements in the rate of mass transfer of were achieved using about 0.3 wt% zinc oxide based nanofluids; however, a decreasing variation was observed at higher concentrations. The effect of nonionic surfactants Rokanol K7 (500 ppm) on mass transfer of the liquid–liquid extraction process was also investigated and it was observed that the mass transfer coefficient increases rapidly with surfactants under a varying speed of agitation but deteriorates at high concentration. The formulation of approximate generalised experimental data based model has been developed followed by interpretation and the quantitative analysis of the model. For the aim of modelling, the experimental results obtained from liquid–liquid extraction were validated with mathematical modelling for calculation of reliability of model.

In biological media, nanoparticles acquire a coating of biomolecules (proteins, lipids, polysaccharides) from their surroundings, which reduces their surface energy and confers a biological identity to the particles. This adsorbed layer is the interface between the nanomaterial and living systems and therefore plays a significant role in determining the fate and behaviour of the nanoparticles. This review summarises the state of the art in terms of understanding the bio-nano interface and provides direction for potential future research directions and some recommendations for future priorities and strategies to support the safe implementation of nanotechnologies. The central premise is that nanomaterials must be studied as biological entities under the appropriate exposure conditions and that this should be implemented in study design and reporting for nanosafety assessment. The implications of the bio-nano interface for nanomaterials fate and behaviour are described in light of four interlinked perspectives: the coating concept; the translocation concept; the signalling concept, and the kinetics concept. A key conclusion is that nanoparticles cannot be viewed as non-interacting species, but rather must be thought of, and studied as, biological entities, where their interaction with the environment is mediated by the proteins and other biomolecules that adsorb to them, and the key parameter to characterise then becomes the nature, composition and evolution of the bio-nano interface.

Colloidal particles have long been under the spotlight of a very diverse research community, given their ubiquitous presence in a broad class of materials and processes, and their pivotal role as model systems. More recently, intense efforts have been devoted to the development of micro- and nanoparticles combining multiple materials in objects with a controlled architecture, hence introducing multiple functionalities and a prescribed symmetry for interactions. These particles are often called hybrid colloids or colloidal molecules, given the analogy with classical molecules presenting well defined structures and chemical compositions. Here, we review the recent progress made in our group to fabricate a broad library of hybrid colloids exploiting a novel assembly route, which uses capillary forces at the moving edge of an evaporating droplet for the sequential composition of colloidal clusters, whose geometry and chemistry can be independently programmed.

Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurden vier verschiedene Methoden zur Separation, Identifikation sowie Quantifizierung von Silber-Nanopartikeln (Ag-NP) entwickelt. Mittels asymmetrischer Fluss-Feldflussfraktionierung (AF4) in Kombination mit einem induktiv gekoppelten Plasma-Massenspektrometer (ICP-MS) konnten eine gute Trennung und hohe Wiederfindungsraten gefunden werden. Eine systematische Studie möglicher Probenverluste während der Methodenoptimierung zeigte, dass der größte Verlust durch die Ag+-Ionen verursacht wurde, während Verluste durch Ablagerungen auf der Membran vernachlässigbar waren. Für Citrat-stabilisierte Ag-NP konnten mittels Hohlfaser-Fluss-Feldflussfraktionierung (HF5) gute Trennergebnisse erreicht und der hydrodynamische Durchmesser bestimmt werden. Zur Bestimmung der Partikelanzahlgrößenverteilung und des geometrischen Durchmessers von Partikeln in unbekannter Matrix wurde die Isotopenverdünnungsanalyse (IVA) erfolgreich mit der Einzelpartikel ICP-MS kombiniert. Weiterhin wurde eine Hochdruckflüssigkeitschromatographie(HPLC)-IVA-ICP-MS-Methode entwickelt, mit welcher NP und ihre korrespondierenden Ionen getrennt und quantifiziert werden konnten. Ein Vergleich der Ansätze zeigt, dass eine Kombination mehrerer Methoden nötig ist, um alle relevanten Informationen über die NP zu erhalten. Zum Abschluss wurde mit den entwickelten Methoden das Umweltverhalten der Ag-NP in einer Huminsäure(HS)-Suspension untersucht. Hierbei wurden erste Stabilisierungseffekte in Bezug auf die Ag-Konzentration und Partikelanzahl festgestellt. Zudem konnte mittels HF5 und HPLC für kleine NP in HA eine Modifikation in Form der Ausbildung eines zweiten, kleineren NP-Signals beobachtet werden. In this work, four different methods for the separation, identification, and quantification of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NP) were developed. Using asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), a good separation and high recovery rates were found. A systematic investigation of possible sample losses during the method optimization showed that Ag+ ions caused the highest loss and only negligible amounts of Ag residues on the membrane were found. For citrate-stabilized Ag-NP, hollow fiber flow-field flow fractionation (HF5) analyses achieved good results for the separation and calculation of the hydrodynamic diameters. In order to determine the particle number size distribution and the geometric diameter for samples in unknown matrices, isotope dilution analysis (IVA) was successfully combined with single particle ICP-MS. Additionally, a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-IVA-ICP-MS approach was developed, which was able to separate and quantify NP and their corresponding ions. A comparison of the methods showed that a combination of different approaches is necessary to obtain all relevant information. Finally, the methods were applied to analyze the environmental behavior of Ag-NP in a humic acid (HS) suspension. Here, first stabilization effects in terms of the Ag concentration and particle number concentration were detected. Using HF5 and HPLC for the analysis of small NPs in HS, a modification in the form of a second, smaller NP signal was observed.

We present recent developments in top–down nanofabrication that have found application in catalysis research. To unravel the complexity of catalytic systems, the design and use of models with control of size, morphology, shape and inter-particle distances is a necessity. The study of well-defined and ordered nanoparticles on a support contributes to the understanding of complex phenomena that govern reactions in heterogeneous and electro-catalysis. We review the strengths and limitations of different nanolithography methods such as electron beam lithography (EBL), photolithography, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography and colloidal lithography for the creation of such highly tunable catalytic model systems and their applications in catalysis. Innovative strategies have enabled particle sizes reaching dimensions below 10 nm. It is now possible to create pairs of particles with distance controlled with an extremely high precision in the order of one nanometer. We discuss our approach to study these model systems at the single-particle level using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and show new ways to fabricate arrays of single nanoparticles or nanoparticles in pairs over a large area using EBL and EUV-achromatic Talbot lithography. These advancements have provided new insights into the active sites in metal catalysts and enhanced the understanding of the role of inter-particle interactions and catalyst supports, such as in the phenomenon of hydrogen spillover. We present a perspective on future directions for employing top–down nanofabrication in heterogeneous and electrocatalysis. The rapid development in nanofabrication and characterization methods will continue to have an impact on understanding of complex catalytic processes.

Unravelling the nature of the interactions between photogenerated charge carriers in solar energy conversion devices is key to enhance performance. In this perspective, we discuss electroabsorption spectroscopy (EAS), as the spectral bandshape of the electroabsorption (EA) signal directly depends on the strength of the charge carrier interactions. For instance, the electroabsorption response in molecular or confined excitonic systems can be modelled perturbatively yielding the Stark effect. In contrast, most solids exhibit weaker interactions, and a perturbative approach cannot be taken in general. For solids with negligible charge carrier interactions, one resorts to the Franz-Keldysh theory of a continuum in a field, that, in the low-field limit, simplifies to the low-field FKA effect. Alternatively, when the continuum approximation breaks down, the problem of a Wannier exciton in a field has to be solved, and numerical methods emerged as the best solution. We illustrate our discussion with two examples involving lead-halide perovskites, a new, high-stake solar cell material. In the first example, we discuss the lineshape of the electroabsorption response for thin-films of lead-iodide perovskite, that sustains the photogeneration of free carriers. In the second example, we address a confined excitonic case with lead-bromide perovskite nanoparticles, and demonstrate the presence of so-called charge-transfer excitons.

Untersuchungen zum Verbleib von Nanopartikeln (NP) entlang des Wirkungspfades „Klärschlamm – Boden – Pflanze“ sollen die Umweltgefährdung von NP aufzeigen. Dabei steht die Aufnahme von NP durch Pflanzen im Fokus der Untersuchungen. Durch Versuche mit Hydrokulturen zur Aufnahme von radiomarkierten [48V]TiO2 und [139Ce]CeO2 durch Pflanzen (Sonnenblume, Radieschen, Feldsalat, Weidelgras) sollte das Aufnahmepotential von verschiedenen Pflanzenspezies ermittelt werden. Dazu erfolgte eine Exposition der Versuchspflanzen mit NP im umweltrelvanten Konzentrationsbereich in Leitungswasser (+Fulvinsäure), synthetischem und gereinigtem Abwasser für 96 h. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass eine Aufnahme in Pflanzen durchweg erfolgt. Dabei werden nur geringe Mengen im ng-Bereich in die Sprosse der Pflanzen transloziert. Anhand von Messungen mit Energiedispersiver Röntgenspektroskopie (REM-EDX) kann gezeigt werden, dass die NP gößtenteils mit den Zellwänden der Wurzeloberfläche und dem Wurzelapoplasten assoziert sind (Abbildung 1). Durch autoradiographische Aufnahmender radiomarkierten NP konnten außerdem die Verteilungen der NP innerhalb der Pflanze visualisiert werden. Daraus lässt sich ableiten, dass die NP nicht über aktive Transportmechanismen in die Pflanze aufgenommen werden. Maßgeblich für die Verlagerung von NP in die Sprosse ist dabei der transpirationsgetriebene Wasserstrom in die Pflanze. Es kommt zu Ablagerungen der NP entlang der Blattadern und der Blattränder. Weiterhin lässt sich vermuten, dass NP innerhalb der Pflanze Lösungsprozessen unterliegen. Für Sonnenblume konnte beobachtet werde, dass sich CeO2 nach nur einer Woche zum größten Teil aufgelöst hat und das freie ionische 139Ce sich in der kompletten Pflanze verteilt hat. In Versuchen mit Erdkulturen wurde die Aufnahme von NP in die Pflanze aus mit Erde dotiertem Klärschlamm mit [48V]TiO2 und [139Ce]CeO2 untersucht. Erste Ergebnisse zeigen, dass eine Aufnahme von NP nicht für alle Pflanze nachweisbar ist. Für Weidelgras konnte als einzige der untersuchten Pflanzen, eine Verlagerung von CeO2 aus der Erde in die Pflanze belegt werden. Dabei können nur geringste Konzentrationen von 1 - 4 ng kg-1 nach 14 Tage in der Pflanze nachgewiesen werden. Die Ergebnisse für vergleichbare Untersuchungen mit TiO2 stehen noch aus. Darüber hinaus sind Versuche geplant, die die Bindung der NP an der Bodenpartikeln genauer darstellen sollen. Abschließend wird eine Risikobewertung erarbeitet, welche regulatorische Maßnahmen erachten soll, um zukünftig die Exposition von NP in die Umwelt zu vermeiden.

Recently, we introduced a novel hybridization route for carbon nanotubes using gold nanoparticles, whose close proximity neatly enhances their radiative emission. Here we investigate the mechanisms behind the enhancement by monitoring the de-excitation dynamics of our π-hybrids through two-color pump-probe time-resolved spectroscopy. The de-excitation process reveals a fast component and a slow component. We find that the presence of gold prominently affects the fast processes, indicating a stronger influence of the gold nanoparticle on the intra-band non-radiative relaxation than on the inter-band recombination of the single-walled carbon nanotube. By evaluating the de-excitation times, we estimate the balance between near-field pumping and the faster metal-induced de-excitation contributions, proving the enhanced pumping to be the leading mechanism. © 2017 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Ziel des Vorhabens „NanoSuppe“ ist es den Verbleib von Nanopartikeln (NP) entlang des Wirkpfades „Abwasser-Klärschlamm-Pflanze“, unter Berücksichtung von typischen Prozesssabläufen in kommunalen Kläranlagen, zu untersuchen. Dafür finden Experimente zum Verbleib von NP in Laborkläranlagen statt und der Eintrag von NP in die Umwelt durch Kläranlagen-Effluenten, z.B. Klärschlamm als Dünger, wird erforscht. In Batch und Säulenversuchen werden Erkenntnisse zur Umweltmobilität der NP gewonnen und durch Versuchsreihen in Hydrokultur und Erdkultur die mögliche Aufnahme von NP in Pflanzen untersucht. Das Projekt zeichnet sich hierbei durch die Verwendung radiomarkierter Nanopartikel aus. Dies ermöglicht eine genaue Quantifizierung und Ermittlung der Verteilung der NP in den untersuchten komplexen Matrizes bei Einsatz umweltrelevanter Konzentrationen. Der Einsatz der Radiotracertechnik erfolgt dabei ausschließlich an Boden-, Pflanzen- und Klärschlammproben im Labor und unter kontrollierten Bedingungen. Es wird ein Prozessmonitoring erzielt und Aussagen zum Verhalten und Verbleib von Nanopartikeln entlang des Wirkungspfades möglich.

Die Identifizierung der Hauptaufnahmepfade von technischen Nanopartikeln in Pflanzen ist ein wichtiger Faktor bei der Einschätzung ihres Verbleibs in der Umwelt und der damit verbundenen Risiken. Durch den Einsatz unterschiedlicher Radiomarkierungsmethoden gelang es eine hauptsächlich partikulär stattfindende Aufnahme von CeO2-Nanopartikeln zu zeigen, im Gegensatz zu einer Aufnahme in Form ionischen Cers.

When it comes to teaching nanotechnology, the focused nanomaterial is most often the focal point of the teaching course. The interesting and oftentimes unique properties constitute the basis for the experimental investigations and the resulting learning opportunities within a course concept. Hence, the synthesis and synthesis concepts for nanomaterials are of particular importance for Nanoscience Education. This article presents two different approaches. First, we will make use of the special reaction conditions of the so-called Leidenfrost reactor to obtain several nanoparticles in aqueous solutions. Then we will illustrate, how nanostructured silica materials with high surface-to-volume-ratios can easily be synthesized by a facile templating reaction. Both cases are Green Chemistry syntheses since only very small amounts of chemicals are needed or they can be easily recycled.

In addition to the so-called small molecule drugs, proteins and peptides are of increasing interest for pharmacotherapy, due to several advantageous properties. In general, those compounds are administered parenterally. However, non-invasive routes of administration represent a great part of research. Amongst others is the pulmonary application of proteins and peptides for local delivery in the case of pulmonary diseases, such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, where the alveolar epithelium is affected. To ensure an intracellular delivery, nanoparticles in a size range of 150 nm were prepared via charge-mediated coacervation, characterized for their physicochemical properties and loaded with several model-proteins and -peptides. The material used for nanoparticle preparation was chosen to be positively and negatively charged starch derivatives, which were synthesized from potato starch. Although nanoparticles in that size range are known to show an increased cell uptake, they do not show a high deposition in the deep lung. Thus, an advanced carrier system consisting of a fast dissolving microparticle matrix with embedded starch nanoparticles was developed and characterized. Due to its aerodynamic properties, that carrier system was able to deposit a high fraction of the applied dose in the deep lung (~50%), while at the same time demonstrating (in in vitro models) the ability to facilitate uptake of starch nanoparticles into cells of the alveolar epithelium after fast dissolution of the microparticle matrix. Aufgrund zahlreicher Vorteile, stellen Proteine und Peptide eine vielversprechende Erweiterung der Pharmakotherapie dar, weg von sogenannten small molecule drugs. Die nicht-invasive Applikation solcher Wirkstoffe steht heutzutage im Fokus der Forschung. Unter anderem zählt hierzu die pulmonale Applikation von Proteinen und Peptiden für die lokale Gabe bei bestimmten Lungenerkrankungen wie z.B. der idiopathischen pulmonalen Fibrose, bei der vor allem das Alveolarepithel betroffen ist. Um ein intrazelluläres Delivery zu gewährleisten wurden Nanopartikel durch ladungsvermittelte Koazervation im wässrigen Medium mit einem Größenbereich um die 150 nm hergestellt und charakterisiert. Im Anschluss wurden die Nanopartikel mit verschiedenen Modell-Proteinen und -Peptiden beladen. Das Material für die Nanopartikel bestand dabei aus negativ und positiv geladenen Stärkederivaten, welche aus Kartoffelstärke synthetisiert wurden. Da Nanopartikel in diesem Größenbereich zwar eine Aufnahme in die Zelle erleichtern, allerdings keine hohe Depositionsrate in der tiefen Lunge erreichen, wurde im Rahmen dieser Arbeit ein spezielles Drug Delivery System, bestehend aus in einer sich schnell auflösenden Mikropartikel Matrix mit eingebetteten Nanopartikeln, entwickelt und charakterisiert. Durch seine aerodynamischen Eigenschaften ist das Drug Delivery System fähig einen Großteil der applizierten Dosis in der tiefen Lunge zu deponieren (~50%), als auch, nach der schnellen Auflösung der Mikropartikel Matrix, die Aufnahme der Nanopartikel in das Lungenepithel (in vitro) zu gewährleisten.

Das Fraunhofer ICT-IMM entwickelte im Auftrag und in Kooperation mit dem Industriekonsortium SASforREACH einen Aufbau zur Streulichtanalyse, der es Auftragslaboratorien ermöglicht, mit geringem personellem und finanziellem Aufwand kleinste nanopartikuläre Fraktionen in wässrigen Lösungen aufzuspüren. Interessant ist dies z. B. für Löslichkeitsuntersuchungen an synthetisch amorphen Silica-Produkten, einem Anwendungsbeispiel für die Klasse der nanostrukturierten Materialien. Gleichzeitig öffnet es die Tür für eine kostengünstige Vor-Ort-Überwachung der Nanopartikel-Belastung im Wasser.

Bis zum heutigen Zeitpunkt sind nur 5 Medikamente zur Behandlung der afrikanischen Schlafkrankheit (HAT) auf dem Markt, die aber alle aufgrund von starken Nebenwirkungen und Schwierigkeiten bei der Verabreichung nicht zufriedenstellend sind [51]. Nanopartikel könnten hierbei als Medikamenten-Carrier eingesetzt werden und einen neuen Therapieansatz bieten. Im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit sollte deshalb zunächst die Toxizität der Silizium- und Eisenoxidnanopartikel auf Trypanosoma brucei brucei und Erythrozyten untersucht werden, um eruieren zu können welcher der Nanopartikel als möglicher Medikamenten-Carrier eingesetzt werden könnte. Die Siliziumpartikel waren ab einer Konzentration von ≥ 50µg/ml trypanozid und die TC50 gegenüber Erythrozyten lag bei 15,6µg/ml. Mittels Fluoreszenzmikrospie konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Siliziumpartikel in die Membran der Erythrozyten inserierten und somit zu deren Lyse führten. Die nackten Fe2O3 Partikel zeigten hingegen im getesteten Konzentrationsbereich von 0,1µg/ml - 1000µg/ml keinen Einfluss in der exponentiellen Wachstumsphase der Trypanosomen. Es kam jedoch ab einer Konzentration von 100µg/ml zu einer verkürzten stationären Phase, die mit steigender Konzentration deutlich zunahm. Aufgrund dieser Ergebnisse wurden die Siliziumpartikel in Bezug auf die Medikamentenentwicklung zur Bekämpfung der HAT als ungeeignet eingestuft. Im weiteren Verlauf der Arbeit wurde daher ausschließlich mit den Eisenoxidnanopartikeln weiter gearbeitet. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit sollte nun die Oberfläche der Eisenoxidnanopartikel hinsichtlich der Medikamentenentwicklung verbessert und die Toxizität der modifizierten Eisenoxidnanopartikel an Trypanosomen getestet werden. Um die nackten Fe2O3-Partikel während der Anwendung in Medium zu stabilisieren und ihre geringe Toxizität auf Trypanosomen noch weiter zu verringern, wurden sie zunächst mit unterschiedlichen Sialinsäurederivaten (AllylthioNeu5AC, APS, NANA) oder mit dem synthetischen Polymer Polyvinylalkohol (PVA) ummantelt. Bei der Negativkontrastierung der nackten Fe2O3 und der Fe2O3-PVA Partikel zeigte sich, dass die Agglomeration der Partikel durch den PVA-Mantel deutlich reduziert werden konnte. Deshalb wurde im weiteren Verlauf ausschließlich mit den Fe2O3-PVA Partikeln weiter gearbeitet. Darüber hinaus wurde die Oberfläche der Nanopartikel noch zusätzlich mit den Proteinen bovine serum albumin (BSA) oder mit humanem Transferrin (Tf) modifiziert, um eine Aufnahme in die Parasiten durch Pinozytose oder Rezeptor-vermittelte Endozytose zu sichern [129]. Alle drei Nanopartikel-Chargen (Fe2O3-PVA, Fe2O3- PVA- BSA, Fe2O3-PVA-Tf) wurden noch zusätzlich mit dem Fluorophor Fluoresceinisothiocyanat (FITC) modifiziert, damit die Aufnahmekinetik mittels Durchflusszytometrie untersucht und verglichen werden konnte. Keiner der genannten modifizierten Partikel zeigte im Bereich von 0,1µg/ml - 1000µg/ml einen inhibitorischen Effekt auf die Trypanosomen. Die hämolytische Wirkung der Fe2O3-PVA, Fe2O3-PVA-BSA und Fe2O3-PVA-Tf Partikel war ≤ 3%, weshalb diese Partikel als geeignete Kandidaten für den Medikamententransport eingestuft wurden. Im dritten Teil dieser Arbeit sollte untersucht werden, inwiefern ein Proteinmantel für die Aufnahme der Eisenoxidnanopartikel nötig ist und ob Serumproteine einen Einfluss auf die Aufnahme der Partikel haben. Deshalb wurde die Aufnahmekinetik aller drei Eisenoxidnanopartikel (Fe2O3-PVA-DTAF, Fe2O3-PVA-BSA-FITC und Fe2O3-PVA-Tf-FITC) unter serumfreien und serumhaltigen Bedingungen mittels Durchflusszytometrie analysiert. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass es bei allen drei Partikeln in serumhaltigem Medium zu einem zeit- und konzentrationsabhängigen Anstieg im prozentualen Anteil der FITC-A positiven Zellen kam. Jedoch zeigte sich, dass bei allen drei Partikeltypen, unabhängig vom Proteinmantel, Konzentrationen bis zu 1000µg/ml nötig waren, um eine Aufnahme in ca. 80-95% der Zellen zu erreichen. Es zeigte sich ebenfalls, dass Inkubationszeiten von bis zu 12h bei den beiden proteinbeschichteten Partikeltypen und Inkubationszeiten bis zu 24h bei den unbeschichteten Fe2O3-PVA Partikeln für eine effiziente Aufnahme nötig waren. Diese langen Inkubationszeiten waren aufgrund der hohen Endozytoserate von Trypanosomen nicht zu erwarten gewesen [129]. Wurden die Versuche hingegen unter serumfreien Bedingungen durchgeführt, kam es bei den beiden proteinbeschichteten Partikeln während der 1-stündigen Inkubation ab einer Konzentration von ≥ 10µg/ml zu einem rasanten konzentrationsabhängigen Anstieg im prozentualen Anteil der fluoreszierenden Zellen. Die Aufnahme der unbeschichteten Fe2O3-PVA Partikel war hingegen selbst unter serumfreien Bedingungen kaum möglich. Bei einer Konzentration von 1mg/ml war nur bei ca. 20% der Zellen ein Fluoreszenzsignal messbar. So konnte gezeigt werden, dass bei der Entwicklung von Nanopartikeln als Medikamenten-Carrier sowohl die Wirkung von Serumproteinen als auch die Notwendigkeit eines Proteinmantels berücksichtigt werden sollte. Im letzten Teil der Arbeit sollte die Aufnahme der Partikel bestätigt und ihre Lokalisation innerhalb der Zelle mittels der Transmissionselektronenmikroskopie (TEM) analysiert werden. Es konnte sowohl die Aufnahme der Siliziumpartikel als auch die der Eisenoxidnanopartikel (Fe2O3-AllylthioNeu5Ac, Fe2O3-APS, Fe2O3-NANA, Fe2O3-PVA, Fe2O3-PVA-BSA-FITC, Fe2O3-PVA-Tf-FITC) unter serumhaltigen Bedingungen bestätigt werden. Alle Partikel befanden sich größtenteils in den Lysosomen oder in den Endosomen. Unter serumfreien Bedingungen konnte nur die Aufnahme der beiden proteinbeschichteten Partikel nachgewiesen werden. Die Nanopartikel konnten in der Flagellumtasche, in endozytotischen Vesikeln, Lysosomen und Autolysosomen gefunden werden. Es konnten ebenfalls zahlreiche multivesikuläre Strukturen in den Mitochondrien detektiert werden, was für eine autophagische Antwort der Zellen auf einen durch Nanopartikel induzierten Stress hindeutet. Dass es sich bei der Aufnahme der Fe2O3-PVA-BSA-FITC und Fe2O3-PVA-Tf-FITC Partikel um einen aktiven Prozess handelte, konnte ebenfalls mittels TEM bestätigt werden. Aufgrund dieser Ergebnisse wurden die Siliziumpartikel als ungeeignet und die Eisenoxidnanopartikel als ein möglicher geeigneter Medikamenten-Carrier zur Bekämpfung der HAT eingestuft. Da die Eisenoxidnanopartikel keine Toxizität auf die Trypanosomen bis zu einer Konzentration von 1mg/ml zeigten und in den Lysosomen akkumulierten, könnte in Zukunft eine selektive Abtötung der Parasiten durch die Kopplung eines Nanobodies gegen ein konserviertes Epitop im GPI-Anker von VSG [187, 204] und die zusätzliche Kopplung eines spezifischen Inhibitors lysosomaler Cysteinproteasen einen neuen Therapieansatz bieten.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) rigorously shields off the central nervous system from the periphery thereby protecting the fragile brain homeostasis. Yet, it also causes many potentially effective brain drugs to fail in vivo - not because of a lack of potency, but for they cannot enter the brain parenchyma. Nanoparticles enable brain drug delivery by acting as Trojan Horses, masking the original physicochemical properties of a drug and allowing targeted transport to biostructures, thereby enlarging the pool of brain drug candidates, such as potential anti-Alzheimer’s disease (AD) drugs. Flurbiprofen (FBP) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that lowers amyloid beta (Aβ) and AD prevalence in high dose long-term treatment. Still, an FBP enantiomer failed in clinical trials with AD patients, likely for its poor brain penetrating capacity. This study revisits FBP as an anti-AD drug by packing the drug into poly(lactic acid) nanoparticles (PLA-FBP NP). PLA-FBP NP crossed an advanced in vitro BBB model (consisting of primary porcine brain capillary endothelial cells (pBCEC) on Transwell® inserts to allow a blood and a brain compartment separation). Also, PLA-FBP NP reduced Aβ42 burden (generated by AD model cells) in the brain compartment – notably without destroying barrier integrity. These promising in vitro findings highlight the potential of nanotechnology-based approaches as a chance in BBB crossing for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. Die Blut-Hirn-Schranke (BHS) trennt Peripherie und Zentralnervensystem voneinander um die fragile Hirn-Homöostase zu schützen. Allerdings scheitern daher viele potentiell effektive Neurotherapeutika in vivo – sie können die BHS oft nicht überschreiten. Nanopartikel können den Transport ins Gehirn vermitteln indem sie als Trojanische Pferde die physikochemischen Eigenschaften der Substanzen maskieren und einen zielgerichteten Transport erlauben. Dies vergrößert die Anzahl potentieller Neuropharmaka, z.B. gegen die Alzheimer Krankheit (AD). Flurbiprofen (FBP) gehört zu den nichtsteroidalen Antirheumatika, die Amyloid beta (Aβ) und die AD-Prävalenz bei hoch dosierter Langzeitgabe verringern können. Dennoch verliefen klinische Studien mit AD Patienten enttäuschend, wahrscheinlich, weil FBP die BHS nur schlecht passiert. Diese Arbeit greift FBP wieder auf, indem die Substanz in Polymilchsäure-Nanopartikel (PLA-FBP NP) verpackt wird. PLA-FBP NP konnten ein in vitro BHS Modell (basierend auf primären porzinen Hirnkapillarendothel-Zellen (pBCEC) auf Transwell® Einsätzen zur Teilung in Blut- und Hirn-Kompartiment) überwinden. Darüber hinaus konnten die Nanopartikel Aβ42 im Hirn-Kompartiment (produziert von AD Modell-Zellen) reduzieren – ohne dabei die Barriere-Integrität zu zerstören. Diese vielversprechenden in vitro Daten unterstreichen das Potenzial Nanotechnologie-basierter Ansätze zur Überwindung der BHS für die Therapien und Prävention neurodegenerativer Erkrankungen.

The design of cancer-targeting particles with precisely tuned physicochemical properties may enhance the delivery of therapeutics and access to pharmacological targets. Mono- und bimetallische Nanopartikel wurden mithilfe der Überkritischen Reaktivabscheidung SFRD (Supercritical Fluid Reactive Deposition) auf unterschiedliche pulverförmige Trägermaterialien abgeschieden. Hierbei wurden Kohlenstoffdioxid als überkritisches Lösungs- und Wasserstoff als Reduktionsmittel eingesetzt. Zur Optimierung des Herstellungsprozesses wurden noch unbekannte Einflussfaktoren auf die Partikel- und Produkteigenschaften eingehend untersucht.

Diese Dissertation gliedert sich in drei Teile. Der erste Teil behandelt die Biofunktionalisierung magnetischer Nanopartikel (hier Magnetit). Dabei wurden zuerst stabilisierte Ferrofluide synthetisiert und diese dann mit Bisphosphonat (beispielsweise DPD, MDP, HEDP und Alendronsäure) beschichtet. Auf Grund der Bindungsfähigkeit des Bisphosphonats an Apatite kommt gecoatetes Magnetit mit verschiedenen Bisphosphonaten (DPD, MDP, HEDP und Alendronsäure) als Kontrastmittel in bildgebenden Verfahren in der medizinischen Diagnostik zum Einsatz. Im zweiten Teil wird die Herstellung von Goldnanopartikeln mit verschiedener Morphologie, Größe und Farbe diskutiert. Außerdem wurde die Bindungsfähigkeit der hergestellten Goldnanopartikel an Kurkumin, welches als Antikrebs-Mittel bekannt ist, ermittelt. Der dritte Teil zeigt die Synthese von Silber-Kolloiden, die in verschiedener Form, Größe und Farbe hergestellt wurden. In diesem Teil wurde Tannin sowie Natriumcitrat als Reduktionsmittel und Stabilisator verwendet. Zusätzlich wurde der Einfluss direkter Sonneneinstrahlung auf die Form und Größe der hergestellten Silbernanopartikel untersucht. Magnetit-, Au- und Ag-Nanopartikel werden mittels dynamischer Lichtstreuung (DLS), FTIR-, UV/VIS-Spekroskopie, Transmissionelektronenmikroskopie, XRD sowie Zetapotential-Messungen untersucht. Um den Gehalt an Bisphosphonaten, beschichtet auf den magnetischen Nanopartikeln, zu bestimmen, wird mittels ICP-OES das gebundene Bisphosphonat bestimmt. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the bio-functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles (magnetite here). At first stabilized ferrofluids were synthesized and then coated with a bisphosphonate (for example, DPD, MDP, HEDP and alendronic acid). Due to the binding ability of the bisphosphonate to apatite, magnetite coated with various bisphosphonates (DPD, MDP, HEDP and alendronic acid) is used as a contrast agent in imaging techniques in medical diagnostics. In the second part the preparation of gold nanoparticles with different morphology, size and color is discussed. In addition, the binding capacity of the prepared gold nanoparticles to curcumin, which is known as anti-cancer agent, is determined. The third part shows the synthesis of silver colloids, which were of different shape, size and color made in this part; tannin and sodium citrate as a reducing agent and stabilizer are used. In addition, the influence of sunlight has been studied on the shape and size of the silver nanoparticles produced. Magnetite, Au and Ag nanoparticles were analysed by means of dynamic light scattering (DLS), FTIR, UV / VIS spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, XRD and Zeta potential measurements. To determine the bisphosphonates coated on the magnetic nanoparticles, the bisphosphonate content is determined by means of ICP-OES.

Iron(0) nanoparticles in ionic liquids (ILs) have been shown to catalyse the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes. In der Batterieentwicklung werden zunehmend leicht flüchtige und entflammbare Flüssigelektrolyte durch form- und thermisch stabile Substanzen ersetzt. Aus sicherheitstechnischer Sicht eignen sich für diese Anwendung insbesondere ionenleitende Festkörper, die jedoch in der Regel eine schlechtere Leitfähigkeit aufweisen als Flüssigkeiten. Um die Vorteile beider Materialklassen zu kombinieren, werden vermehrt Quasi-Festelektrolyten untersucht. Ein Ansatzpunkt ist, thermisch und chemisch stabile Ionische Flüssigkeiten (ILs) durch die Zugabe von Nanopartikeln zu gelieren (Ionogel) und als Lösungsmittel für Leitsalze einzusetzen. Die Verwendbarkeit von Ionogelen wurde bereits in Farbstoffsolarzellen und Lithiumionenbatterien unter Beweis gestellt. Im Mittelpunkt der aktuellen Forschung steht die Untersuchung des Gelbildungsprozesses, die daraus resultierende Mikrostruktur und deren Auswirkung auf die Ionenleitfähigkeit. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird der Einfluss des Partikelmaterials anhand von SiO2 und Si3N4 Teilchen systematisch untersucht. Zur Untersuchung des Grenzflächeneffekts wurde das viskoelastische Verhalten der Ionogele mit Hilfe kontinuierlicher und dynamischer Scherexperimente analysiert. Dabei wurde festgestellt, dass bereits 3 Vol.-% von sowohl nitridischen als auch oxidischen Nanopartikeln ausreichen, um eine Gelstruktur auszubilden. Trotz dieser offenkundigen Übereinstimmung unterscheidet sich der Gelbildungsprozess der beiden Systeme jedoch grundlegend: Der Elastizitätsmodul in Abhängigkeit der Partikelkonzentration weist darauf hin, dass die nitridischen Ionogele diffusionslimitiert und die oxidischen reaktionslimitiert agglomerieren. Zudem erwiesen sich die oxidischen Gele als thixotrop. Um die interpartikulären Wechselwirkungen abschätzen zu können, wurden Zetapotentialmessungen durchgeführt. Zunächst wurden dazu monodisperse SiO2-Partikel synthetisiert und deren Agglomerationsverhalten in Ethanol mit steigender EMI-TFSI Konzentration analysiert. In Kombination mit TEM-Aufnahmen wurde festgestellt, dass sich SiO2-Partikel in IL in einem Abstand von ca. 10 nm anordnen. Dieser Effekt wurde auf Solvatationskräfte zurückgeführt: Entsprechende Potentialkurven wurden berechnet und mit den rheologischen Eigenschaften der Ionogele verglichen. Bei der Untersuchung des Ionentransports konnte der Trend der Gesamtleitfähigkeit in Abhängigkeit der Partikelkonzentration mit Hilfe der effective medium theory (EMT) beschrieben werden. Die Abweichung in den Absolutwerten deutet darauf hin, dass interpartikuläre Kräfte und Wechselwirkungen zwischen Ionen und Partikeloberfläche nicht zu vernachlässigen sind. NMR-Experimente ergaben, dass Wechselwirkungen bevorzugt zwischen Kationen und Oberflächenfunktionalitäten auftreten, wodurch die Kationen teilweise immobilisiert werden und damit nicht zur Leitfähigkeit beitragen können. Der immobilisierte Anteil ist in nitridischen Proben größer als in oxidischen Proben. Ein Vergleich der Diffusionskoeffizienten ergibt, dass alle Ionen bis auf die Lithiumspezies durch die Zugabe nitridischer Partikel stärker abgebremst werden als durch oxidische., For battery development, safety is a major issue. Therefore, many efforts were directed towards substitution of volatile and flammable solvents by viscous and thermally stable substances. With regard to security aspects, solids are the most promising electrolyte materials, but their disadvantage is generally lower ionic conductivity compared with liquids. To combine the positive properties of both material classes, there is a growing interest in quasi-solid electrolytes. One attempt is to solidify thermally and chemically stable ionic liquids (ILs) through addition of nanoparticles and to use the resulting ionogel as a new type of solvent for conducting salts. The suitability of ionogels has already been proven in dye-sensitized solar cells and lithium ion-batteries. The main interest of current research is to understand the nature of the gelation process and, the resulting microstructure as well as its effect on the ionic conductivity. This systematic study presents the influence of the type of the dispersed particles on the colloidal interaction in ILs by comparing SiO2 and Si3N4 particles. The viscoelastic behavior of the ionogels was investigated in order to better understand the interfacial effects. Dynamic shear experiments showed that 3 vol.-% nanoparticles of both types (either SiO2 or Si3N4) are sufficient to form a gel; however, the underlying gelation process of both systems is entirely different: The elastic modulus in dependence of the particle concentration demonstrates that the Si3N4 ionogels are formed through diffusion-controlled agglomeration and the SiO2 gels through reaction-controlled agglomeration. In contrast to the Si3N4 ionogel, the SiO2 ionogels show thixotropic behavior. To obtain information about the interactions between particles, zeta-potential measurements were performed, for which monodisperse SiO2 particles were synthesized. The agglomeration behavior of SiO2 particles dispersed in ethanol was investigated in dependence of IL concentration. In addition to TEM-pictures, the results indicated that there is a distance of 10 nm between the SiO2 particles. This observation is attributed to solvation effects: To confirm this assumption, potential curves were calculated and compared qualitatively to experimental results of the rheological measurements. The ion transport studies revealed that the overall conductivity of the ionogels decreased with increasing particle concentration. Qualitatively, this could be described by the effective medium theory (EMT). The deviation of the absolute values indicates that the forces between particles and the interactions between ions and surface are not negligible. NMR-experiments show that especially cations interact with the surface groups of the particle. A portion of the cations is trapped; these ions do not contribute to the conductivity of the sample. The amount of the immobilized ions in the Si3N4 ionogels is larger than in the SiO2 ionogels. Comparison of the self-diffusion coefficients shows that all ions apart from the lithium species are slowed down more strongly by the addition of Si3N4 particles than by adding SiO2.

The design and synthesis of Janus nanoparticles has attracted great scientific interest in recent years. Novel optical, electronic, magnetic, and superficial properties emerge from their dimensions and unique morphology at the nanoscale. Additional properties emerge from the binary spatial distribution of functionalities on a single anisotropic nanoparticle, like amphiphilicity or new catalytic effects. As a result, Janus nanoparticles are highly versatile nanomaterials with great potential in different scientific and technological fields. In this paper, some of the advances in inorganic – inorganic and inorganic–organic Janus nanoparticles are highlighted. First, the main strategies followed to synthesize Janus nanoparticles are described. Second, some of the properties and applications of Janus nanoparticles are described in four different fields: interfaces and emulsions, biomedicine, catalysis, and molecular colloids and suprastructures.

The plasmonic resonances of nanostructured silver films produce exceptional surface enhancement, enabling reproducible single-molecule Raman scattering measurements. Supporting a broad range of plasmonic resonances, these disordered systems are difficult to investigate with conventional far-field spectroscopy. Here, we use nonlinear excitation spectroscopy and polarization anisotropy of single optical hot spots of supercontinuum generation to track the transformation of these plasmon modes as the mesoscopic structure is tuned from a film of discrete nanoparticles to a semicontinuous layer of aggregated particles. We demonstrate how hot spot formation from diffractively-coupled nanoparticles with broad spectral resonances transitions to that from spatially delocalized surface plasmon excitations, exhibiting multiple excitation resonances as narrow as 13 meV. Photon-localization microscopy reveals that the delocalized plasmons are capable of focusing multiple narrow radiation bands over a broadband range to the same spatial region within 6 nm, underscoring the existence of novel plasmonic nanoresonators embedded in highly disordered systems.

Titania nanofibers were fabricated using the industrial NanospiderTM technology. The preparative protocol was optimized by screening various precursor materials to get pure anatase nanofibers. Composite films were prepared by mixing a commercial paste of nanocrystalline anatase particles with the electrospun nanofibers, which were shortened by milling. The composite films were sensitized by Ru-bipyridine dye (coded C106) and the solar conversion efficiency was tested in a dye-sensitized solar cell filled with iodide-based electrolyte solution (coded Z960). The solar conversion efficiency of a solar cell with the optimized composite electrode (? = 7.53% at AM 1.5 irradiation) outperforms that of a solar cell with pure nanoparticle film (? = 5.44%). Still larger improvement was found for lower light intensities. At 10% sun illumination, the best composite electrode showed ? = 7.04%, referenced to that of pure nanoparticle film (? = 4.69%). There are non-monotonic relations between the film's surface area, dye sorption capacity and solar performance of nanofiber-containing composite films, but the beneficial effect of the nanofiber morphology for enhancement of the solar efficiency has been demonstrated.
