The presenting complaints, clinical signs, diagnostic evaluation, therapy, and outcome of 12 horses with clinically apparent West-Nile-Virus (WNV) infection are described.Case series RESULTS: The adult horses (age 6-18 years, 7 mares, 5 geldings) from Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt were presented with various clinical histories between September 2018 and September 2020. All horses were presented in August or September and no horse was vaccinated against WNV. Fever as the most common general clinical sign was present in 8/12 horses. The most common neurological signs were muscle fasciculations (11/12 horses), ataxia (8/12 horses), hyperesthesia and head tilt (6/12 horses each). Diagnosis of WNV infection was confirmed by demonstrating IgM antibody and neutralizing antibody production in all horses; 2 euthanized horses also tested positive by PCR. Therapy was symptomatic and primarily included non-steroidal anti-inflammatories or dexamethasone as well as fluid therapy. Duration of hospitalization was 7.5 days on average. According to their owners, seven horses recovered completely, while information was missing for 2 horses.In eastern-central Germany, WNV-encephalomyelitis must be considered a differential diagnosis for unvaccinated horses with acute neurologic disease occurring in summer and late summer. The reported clinical signs and the outcome of therapy are mostly congruent with reports from North America and other European countries.Die Vorstellungsgründe, klinische Symptomatik, Diagnostik, Therapie und Ergebnis der Therapie von 12 Pferden mit klinisch apparenter West-Nil-Virus (WNV)-Infektion werden beschrieben.Fallserie ERGEBNISSE: Die adulten Pferde (Alter 6–18 Jahre, 7 Stuten, 5 Wallache) aus Sachsen oder Sachsen-Anhalt wurden zwischen September 2018 und September 2020 mit unterschiedlichen Vorberichten vorgestellt. Alle Pferde wurden im August oder September vorgestellt und keines der Pferde war gegen das WNV geimpft. Fieber war das häufigste Allgemeinsymptom und trat bei 8/12 Pferden auf. An neurologischen Symptomen traten Muskelfaszikulationen (11/12 Pferde), Ataxie (8/12 Pferde) sowie Hyperästhesie und Kopfschiefhaltung (je 6/12 Pferde) am häufigsten auf. Bei allen Pferden wurde die Infektion mittels Nachweises von IgM sowie neutralisierenden Antikörpern gegen das WNV diagnostiziert, zwei euthanasierte Pferde waren zudem PCR-positiv. Die symptomatische Therapie beinhaltete vor allem nicht-steroidale Antiphlogistika oder Dexamethason sowie Infusionstherapie. Die Dauer des Klinikaufenthaltes betrug im Durchschnitt 7,5 Tage. Sieben Pferde erholten sich laut Besitzerangaben vollständig, für 2 Pferde war keine Information erhältlich.Die WNV-Enzephalomyelitis muss in Mitteldeutschland seit 2018 als Differentialdiagnose von im Sommer und Spätsommer auftretenden akuten neurologischen Erkrankungen ungeimpfter Pferdes in Betracht gezogen werden. Die beschriebenen Symptome sowie das Ergebnis der Therapie sind weitgehend deckungsgleich mit Berichten aus Nordamerika und anderen europäischen Ländern.

The hay producing plants, concentrate, straw and meadows could be contaminated by the aerosols of glyphosate based herbicide during spraying process of crops and pre-harvest desiccation treatment of cereals. The aim of this study is to investigate the concentration of glyphosate in the duodenal fluid of horses with gastric ulcer syndrome. The stomach and duodenum of referred untreated horse patients (n=92) with colic, weight loss, diarrhoea, anemia or performance intolerance were endoscopically examined right after the admission. Duodenal fluid (40 ml) was collected from the duodenal region where the papilla duodeni major is located. Hematology and clinical chemistry data were examined. The concentration of glyphosate in serum and duodenal fluid samples were analysed using a competitive ELISA and control analysis had also been done with HPLC. Statistical differences between groups were determined by the non-parametric Mann-Whitney-test using a significant level of p≤0,05. Glyphosate was detected in all duodenal fluid (median 12,2 ng/ml; 1st quartile 4,0 ng/ml; 3rd quartile 19,3 ng/ml; min 0,6 ng/ml; max. 192,9 ng/ml) and blood samples (1,79 ng/ml; 1,0 ng/ml; 2,8 ng/ml; 0,2 ng/ml; 3,7 ng/ml) of all horses. Glyphosate concentrations of duodenal fluid samples are significantly higher than in blood samples (Mann Whitney U-test, p≤0,05). The concentration of glyphosate in the duodenal fluid was significantly higher in horses with squamous gastric disease (grade 4/4; n=11/92) compared to horses with normal squamous mucosa (grade 0/4, n=10/92) (median: 19,8 ng/ml versus 8,4 ng/ml). Horses with glandular gastric disease and a grade 4/4 (n=9/92) had higher concentrations of glyphosate in the duodenal fluid than horses with normal glandular mucosa (grade 0/4; n=9/92) (median: 19,2 versus 11,1). The Gamma-Glutamyltransferase (GGT) enzyme activity is significantly higher in the group of horses with lower concentration of glyphosate in the duodenal fluid (≤12,2 ng/ml) compared with the group with higher concentration of glyphosate (12,2 ng/ml) (median 279,5 versus 101,9 U/L). During autumn the horses had higher concentrations of glyphosate in duodenal fluid (n=18; median 14,3) compared with lower concentrations in spring time (n=34; median 8,1 ng/ml). Horses kept around big cities had significantly higher concentrations of glyphosate in the duodenal fluid in comparison to horses living in the countryside (medians 17,8 ng/ml versus 7,5 ng/ml).Das Herbizid Glyphosat inklusive Tensid wird gegen Unkräuter in der Landwirtschaft, in Haus-, Garten- und Parkanlagen, Strassenrändern sowie auf Bahndämmen eingesetzt. Das Versprühen dieses Herbizides ermöglicht das Verwehen und somit die Kontamination der Äcker, Wiesen und Weiden und folglich des Getreides, Heus, Strohs und der Haylage und führt somit zur oralen Aufnahme bei Pferden. Um die Verbreitung der Glyphosatanwendung im Mitteldeutschen Raum und um einen möglichen Risikofaktor zur Auslösung des Magenulzerasyndromes zu eruieren, ist die Duodenalflüssigkeit bei Pferdepatienten auf Glyphosat getestet worden. Überwiesene, unbehandelte Pferdepatienten (n=92) mit dem Vorbericht Kolik, Abmagerung, Durchfall, Anämie oder Leistungsdepression sind am Tag der Einweisung gastroduodenoskopiert worden. Die Graduierung der Schleimhautläsionen im Magen und Duodenum sind erfolgt und 40 ml Duodenalflüssigkeit abgesaugt und parallel 20 ml Blut gewonnen worden. Hämatologische und chemische Untersuchungen des Blutes sowie chemische Analysen der Duodenalflüssigkeit sind erfolgt. Glyphosat im Serum und in der Duodenalflüssigkeit ist mit einem direkten, kompetitiven ELISA und parallel mit einer Hochleistungsflüssigkeitschromatographie nachgewiesen worden. Glyphosat ist bei allen untersuchten Pferden in der Duodenalflüssigkeit (median 12,2 ng/ml, 1. Quartil 4,0 ng/ml; 3. Quartil 19,3 ng/ml; min 0,6 ng/ml; max 192,9 ng/ml) und im Blut (1,79 ng/ml; 1,0 ng/ml; 2,8 ng/ml; 0,2 ng/ml; 3,7 ng/ml) nachgewiesen worden. Die Glyphosatkonzentration in der Duodenalflüssigkeit ist signifikant höher als im Blut (Mann Whitney U-Test, p≤0,05). Pferde mit kutanen (n=11/92) bzw. glandulären (n=9/92) Schleimhautläsionen des Magens mit Grad 4/4 haben signifikant höhere bzw. höhere Glyphosatkonzentrationen in der Duodenalflüssigkeit als jene mit Grad 0/4 (n=10 bzw. 9) (median: 19,8 ng/ml versus 8,4 ng/ml bzw. 19,2 ng/ml versus 11,1 ng/ml) Die Aktivität der Gamma-Glutamyltransferase (GGT) in der Duodenalflüssigkeit ist in der Pferdegruppe mit niederer Glyphosatkonzentration (≤12,2 ng/ml) signifikant höher (median 279,5 U/L) als in der Pferdegruppe mit höherer Glyphosatkonzentration (12,2 ng/ml) (median 101,9 U/L). Die Glyphosatkonzentration ist während des Herbstes (n=18; median 14,3 ng/ml) am höchsten und am niedrigsten im Frühjahr (n=34; median 8,1 ng/ml). Signifikant höhere Glyphosatkonzentrationen in der Duodenalflüssigkeit sind bei Pferden, gehalten um die grossen Städte (17,8 ng/ml) im Vergleich zu den Pferden im ländlichen Raum (7,5 ng/ml), gemessen worden.L’herbicide glyphosate, y compris le surfactant, est utilisé contre les mauvaises herbes dans l’agriculture, les maisons, les jardins et les parcs, les bords de route ainsi que sur les remblais des voies ferrées. La pulvérisation de cet herbicide engendre sa dispersion et donc la contamination des champs, des prairies et des pâturages et, par conséquent, des céréales, du foin, de la paille et du haylage, entraînant ainsi une ingestion orale chez les chevaux. Afin de déterminer l’étendue de l’utilisation du glyphosate dans la région du centre de l’Allemagne et d’identifier un éventuel facteur de risque pour le déclenchement du syndrome de l’ulcère gastrique, le liquide duodénal a été testé par rapport au glyphosate chez des patients équins. Les chevaux référés et non traités (n=92) présentant des antécédents de colique, d›amaigrissement, de diarrhée, d›anémie ou de baisse de performance ont été soumis à une gastroduodénoscopie le jour de leur admission. La graduation des lésions des muqueuses de l’estomac et du duodénum a été effectuée, 40 ml de liquide duodénal ont été aspirés et 20 ml de sang ont été prélevés en parallèle. Des analyses hématologiques et chimiques du sang ainsi que des analyses chimiques du liquide duodénal ont été effectuées. Le glyphosate a été détecté dans le sérum et le liquide duodénal à l’aide d’un test ELISA direct et compétitif et, parallèlement, d’une chromatographie liquide haute performance. Le glyphosate a été détecté dans le liquide duodénal (médiane 12,2 ng/ml, 1er quartile 4,0 ng/ml ; 3e quartile 19,3 ng/ml ; min 0,6 ng/ml ; max 192,9 ng/ml) et dans le sang (1,79 ng/ml ; 1,0 ng/ml ; 2,8 ng/ml ; 0,2 ng/ml ; 3,7 ng/ml) de tous les chevaux étudiés. La concentration de glyphosate dans le liquide duodénal est significativement plus élevée que dans le sang (test U de Mann Whitney, p≤0,05). Les chevaux présentant des lésions cutanées (n=11/92) ou glandulaires (n=9/92) de la muqueuse gastrique de grade 4/4 présentaient des concentrations de glyphosate dans le liquide duodénal significativement plus élevées ou plus élevées que ceux de grade 0/4 (n=10 et 9 respectivement) (médiane : 19,8 ng/ml versus 8,4 ng/ml ou 19,2 ng/ml versus 11,1 ng/ml). L’activité de la gamma-glutamyltransférase (GGT) dans le liquide duodénal était significativement plus élevée (médiane de 279,5 U/L) dans le groupe de chevaux présentant une faible concentration de glyphosate (≤12,2 ng/ml) que dans le groupe de chevaux présentant une concentration plus élevée de glyphosate (12,2 ng/ml) (médiane de 101,9 U/L). La concentration de glyphosate était plus élevée pendant l’automne (n=18 ; médiane 14,3 ng/ml) et plus faible au printemps (n=34 ; médiane 8,1 ng/ml). Des concentrations significativement plus élevées de glyphosate dans le liquide duodénal ont été mesurées chez les chevaux détenus autour des grandes villes (17,8 ng/ml) par rapport aux chevaux vivant dans les zones rurales (7,5 ng/ml).L’erbicida glifosato, compreso il tensioattivo, viene utilizzato contro le erbe infestanti in agricoltura, nelle aree domestiche, nei giardini e nei parchi, ai bordi delle strade e nelle massicciate ferroviarie. Lo spargimento di questo erbicida permette la sua propagazione e quindi la contaminazione di campi, prati e pascoli e, di conseguenza, di cereali, fieno, paglia e foraggio, con conseguente ingestione orale da parte dei cavalli. Per determinare la distribuzione del glifosato nella regione della Germania centrale e identificare un possibile fattore di rischio per l’insorgenza della sindrome dell’ulcera gastrica, il liquido duodenale cavalli è stato analizzato in rapporto al glifosato. I pazienti equini non trattati (n=92) che presentavano un’anamnesi di coliche, cachessia, diarrea, anemia o depressione delle prestazioni sono stati sottoposti il giorno del ricovero a una gastroduodenoscopia. È stata effettuata la graduazione delle lesioni della mucosa gastrica e duodenale e sono stati aspirati 40 ml di liquido duodenale e 20 ml di sangue in parallelo. In seguito sono stati eseguiti esami ematologici e chimici del sangue e analisi chimiche del liquido duodenale. Il glifosato nel siero e nel liquido duodenale è stato rilevato con un ELISA competitivo diretto e in parallelo con una cromatografia liquida ad alte prestazioni. Il glifosato è stato rilevato nel liquido duodenale (mediana 12,2 ng/ml, 1° quartile 4,0 ng/ml; 3° quartile 19,3 ng/ml; min 0,6 ng/ml; max 192,9 ng/ml) e nel sangue (1,79 ng/ml; 1,0 ng/ml; 2,8 ng/ml; 0,2 ng/ml; 3,7 ng/ml) di tutti i cavalli esaminati. La concentrazione di glifosato nel liquido duodenale è significativamente più alta rispetto al sangue (test U di Mann Whitney, p≤0,05). I cavalli con lesioni cutanee (n=11/92) o ghiandolari (n=9/92) della mucosa gastrica di grado 4/4 presentano concentrazioni di glifosato nel liquido duodenale significativamente più alte o superiori rispetto a quelli con grado 0/4 (n=10 e 9, rispettivamente) (mediana: 19,8 ng/ml contro 8,4 ng/ml e 19,2 ng/ml contro 11,1 ng/ml, rispettivamente). L’attività della gamma-glutamiltransferasi (GGT) nel liquido duodenale è significativamente più alta (mediana 279,5 U/L) nel gruppo di cavalli con una concentrazione di glifosato inferiore (≤12,2 ng/ml) rispetto al gruppo di cavalli con una concentrazione di glifosato superiore (12,2 ng/ml) (mediana 101,9 U/L). La concentrazione di glifosato è massima in autunno (n=18; mediana 14,3 ng/ml) e minima in primavera (n=34; mediana 8,1 ng/ml). Sono state misurate concentrazioni significativamente più elevate di glifosato nel liquido duodenale nei cavalli allevati nelle grandi città (17,8 ng/ml) rispetto a quelli allevati nelle aree rurali (7,5 ng/ml).

Recording equine veterinarians opinion on equine Lyme disease.A survey was conducted to get a general impression of the opinion of German equine vets on the topic of equine Lyme Borreliosis. The main focus of this questionnaire study was set on the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of the horse vets.Overall almost half of the veterinarians (48 %) detected only rarely or never serological antibodies against Bb , 47 %found occasionally and 5 % frequently Borrelia antibodies within their clientel.Concerning the existence of clinical LB in horses, 51 % of the veterinarians reported clinical cases, 43 % thought it might be possible but have not seen cases themselves and 6 % categorically ruled out the existence.On average, further diagnostic measures for LB diseases were initiated 15 ± 9 times per year and 1.4 ± 1.0 cases of equine LB diseases were diagnosed per year. In the majority of 68 % of the cases, the veterinarians chose serological tests as diagnostic measures, followed by a combination of serological tests and Antigen detection tests (27 %) and only 5 % of the veterinarians were using Antigen detection tests exclusively. Blood and skin biopsies were submitted most frequently for direct Antigendetection. The treatment of horses with positive laboratory results indicating Lyme disease and clinical symptoms assessed as suitable was carried out by 93 % of the veterinarians with antibiotics and 7% with homeopathy. Doxycycline (68 %) was used most frequently. The antibiotic treatment was applied over a period of 3 (31 %) to 4 (63 %) weeks.Regarding the question of a possible vaccination, 39 % of veterinarians do not offer vaccination against Lyme borreliosis, 20 % have not yet used it, but do not categorically reject it, and 41 % regularly carry out vaccinations against Lyme borreliosis.The opinion on the clinical relevance of Equine Lyme Borreliosis among german equine veterinarians vary considerably. The aim of this review is to describe general guidelines of hygiene measures in the horse stable as well as to provide current recommendations for an outbreak of a common infectious disease. General cleanliness, hand hygiene, avoidance of stress, regular deworming, and vaccinations belong to the basic hygiene measures in a horse herd. All new or returning equids should be submitted to a quarantine period as an important prevention measure. Repeated washing and disinfection of hands may prevent spreading of infectious agents to people and horses.The conception of a hygiene plan, including general biosecurity procedures and standard operating procedures in a case of an outbreak of an infectious disease, zoonosis, or colonization with multi-resistant bacteria is strongly recommended. As soon as the disease is suspected, extended hygiene measures including protective clothing, cleaning, disinfection, and isolation of potentially infected animals should be implemented. Prompt confirmation of the causative agent by examination of appropriate samples is crucial. It is important to adjust all safety measures based on the contagious nature of the respective pathogen and its major transmission routes. Apart from a lock-down of the stable, clinic or show grounds, the segregation of horses plays an important role. Implementation of the "traffic light system" is recommended. In this, the red group ("infected") include animals with clinical signs of the disease or that have been tested positive. All horses with possible pathogen contact should be allocated to a yellow group ("suspected") and regularly controlled for the signs of infection and fever. Clinically normal horses without contact to the infected animals belong to the green group ("healthy"). A change of protective clothing and an extensive disinfection should be performed when moving between the groups.The extended hygiene measures are to be maintained until all animals have been tested negative or fail to exhibit clinical signs of the disease for a certain time period.Das Ziel dieses Reviews ist, die allgemein gültigen Hygienemaßnahmen im Pferdestall zusammenzufassen sowie aktuelle Empfehlungen bei Ausbruch relevanter Infektionskrankheiten zu liefern. Die allgemeine Sauberkeit, Handhygiene, stressarme Haltung sowie regelmäßige Entwurmungen und Impfungen gehören dabei zur Basishygiene im Pferdebestand. Wichtige Maßnahme in der Infektionsprävention stellen dabei die Quarantäne aller rückkehrenden oder neu eingestallten Equiden und das regelmäßige Waschen und Desinfizieren der Hände zur Reduktion der Übertragung von Krankheitserreger dar.Die Erstellung eines Hygieneplans, welcher die allgemeinen Biosicherheitsregeln sowie die Vorgehensweise für den Fall eines Ausbruchs einer ansteckenden Erkrankung, Zoonose bzw. Infektion mit multiresistenten Erregern (MRE) festlegt, wird empfohlen. Bereits bei begründetem Verdacht auf eine dieser Erkrankungen sollten weitere, über die übliche Basishygiene hinausgehende Maßnahmen (inklusive Schutzkleidung, Flächen- und Gerätereinigung und Desinfektion sowie Isolation potenziell erkrankter Tiere) eingeleitet werden. Die erforderlichen diagnostischen Proben sollen möglichst zeitnah entnommen werden, um einen Krankheitsverdacht schnellstmöglich zu bestätigen. Die entsprechenden Schutzmaßnahmen sind dem Übertragungsrisiko der Infektionserreger und der Art ihrer potenziellen Übertragung anzupassen.Neben dem „Lock-Down“ des ganzen Stalls, der Klinik oder des Turnier-/Veranstaltungsgeländes spielt die räumliche Trennung der Tiere eine wichtige Rolle. Ein „Ampelsystem“ wird empfohlen, bei dem kranke oder positiv getestete Pferde in die rote Gruppe eingeordnet werden („erkrankt“). Tiere mit möglichem Kontakt zum pathogenen Agens sollten der gelben Gruppe („verdächtig“) zugeteilt und regelmäßig auf Anzeichen der Erkrankung und Fieber kontrolliert werden. In der grünen Kategorie („unverdächtig“) befinden sich klinisch unauffällige Pferde ohne Kontakt zu erkrankten Tieren. Zwischen den räumlich getrennten Bereichen sollte die Schutzkleidung gewechselt werden und eine entsprechende Desinfektion stattfinden.Alle erweiterten Hygienemaßnahmen sollten beibehalten werden bis alle Tiere negativ getestet wurden und keine Symptome der Erkrankung über eine ausreichend lange Zeit zeigen.

A 5.5-year-old alpaca mare was referred to the University Clinic for Ruminants due to a lameness in the right hind limb. Six months prior to presentation, the mare had been treated with systemic antibiotics resulting in resolution of the initial lameness. At the time there had been no indication of an inciting trauma. Clinical examination revealed an approx. 2 × 2 cm large, fluctuating, neither excessively warm nor painful mass caudal to the right tuber coxae fixed to the underlying tissue. In addition, a moderate, mixed lameness with a predominant proportion of the swinging leg component was present in the right hind limb. Subsequently, sonographic examination of the right gluteal region was performed, revealing severe alterations of bone contour in the area of the right hip joint. Radiographic assessment of the pelvis was carried out for further clarification. Based on the clinical finding of a fistula in the right gluteal region as well as the results of the radiologic examination, a long-standing infected fracture of the right iliac bone accompanied by high-degree, irregularly calcified callus formation and low to moderate osteomyelitis in the fracture area was diagnosed. The patient was euthanized in consequence of the grave prognosis. Computed tomographic examination of the pelvis and the lumbar spine in the L3-L6 area was undertaken in order to further document the extent of the pathological changes. For final clarification, patho-histological examination as well as a microbiologic analysis of the abscess exudate were performed.The presented case shows the importance of clinical as well as orthopedic examinations, as the individual animal frequently only exhibits minimal clinical signs despite the presence of severe changes.Eine 5,5 Jahre alte Alpakastute wurde aufgrund einer Lahmheit hinten rechts an die Universitätsklinik für Wiederkäuer überwiesen. Vorberichtlich war bereits vor ca. 6 Monaten eine systemische antibiotische Therapie über mehrere Tage durchgeführt worden, worauf sich das Gangbild verbesserte und die Lahmheit kaum noch zu beobachten war. Zum damaligen Zeitpunkt gab es seitens der Tierhalter keinen Hinweis auf eine traumatische Ursache für diese Lahmheit. Bei der klinischen Aufnahmeuntersuchung zeigte sich kaudal des rechten Tuber coxae eine ca. 2 × 2 cm große, fluktuierende, nicht vermehrt warme, nicht schmerzhafte Umfangsvermehrung, welche zum darunterliegenden Gewebe hin verschieblich war. Zudem wurde eine mittelgradige, gemischte Lahmheit mit überwiegendem Anteil der Hangbeinkomponente am rechten Hinterbein diagnostiziert. Als weiterführende diagnostische Maßnahme wurde eine sonographische Untersuchung der rechten Gluteal- und Hüftgelenksregion durchgeführt, wobei hochgradige Knochenkonturveränderungen im Bereich des rechten Hüftgelenkes festgestellt wurden. Zur weiteren Abklärung wurde eine röntgenologische Untersuchung des Beckens vorgenommen. Unter Miteinbeziehung der klinisch festgestellten Fistelöffnung an der rechten Glutealregion und den Befunden der radiologischen Untersuchung wurde die Diagnose einer bereits seit längerem bestehenden infizierten Fraktur des rechten Darmbeines mit hochgradiger unregelmäßig verkalkter Kallusbildung und gering- bis mittelgradiger Osteomyelitis gestellt. Aufgrund der sonografischen und röntgenologischen Befunde wurde eine schlechte Prognose gestellt und der Patient euthanasiert. Zur weiteren Dokumentation und um das Ausmaß der pathologischen Veränderungen besser darstellen zu können, wurde zusätzlich eine computertomografische Untersuchung vom Becken und der Lendenwirbelsäule im Bereich L3–L6 durchgeführt. Zur finalen Abklärung wurde eine pathohistologische Untersuchung der festgestellten Knochenveränderungen sowie eine bakteriologische Untersuchung des Abszessinhaltes vorgenommen.Anhand des hier vorgestellten Falles wird ersichtlich, wie wichtig eine gründliche klinische und orthopädische Untersuchung und vor allem zusätzlich weiterführende Untersuchungen sind, da vor allem Neuweltkamele oftmals nur geringe klinische Symptome zeigen, obwohl Veränderungen bereits massiv ausgeprägt sein können.

In horses, colic is associated with relatively high mortality rates. Identification of parameters associated with poor outcome may aid in providing a more accurate prognosis. This study aimed to assess the early prognostic value towards survival of the horse based on parameters of the clinical examination.In a retrospective study (2013-2017), results of the clinical examination of horses with colic were analyzed. Obtained parameters were categorized from physiologic up to different pathophysiologic manifestations. The risk of death was calculated as odds ratios in comparison to normal values of these parameters. Individual score points were obtained and related to the respective outcome. Cut-off values for prognosis and treatment were calculated to distinguish between outcome and treatment group.A total of 492 colic horses were analyzed, presenting 433 survivors (88 %). Overall, medical treatment was selected in 346 (70.3 %) horses (with 96 % survivors) and surgical treatment (laparotomy) was performed in 146 (29.7 %) horses (69.2 % survivors). An increased likelihood of the outcome "death" was found in horses aged over 20 years (OR = 5.498, p0.0005), with colic signs of6 hours duration (OR = 3.590, p = 0.035) and, also, for breeds of draft horses (OR = 8.364, p0.0005). Horses with significant increases in heart and respiratory rates (OR = 24.294, p0.0005 and OR = 20.375, p0.0005, respectively) and increased blood lactate concentrations (90 mg/dl: OR = 26.390, p0.0005) were more likely to succumb to the disease. However, a scoring system failed to show an association between high score points and poor prognosis.Parameters of the clinical examination as well as the history of the patient may be indicative for the patient's outcome. However, no clear-cut distinction of the evaluated parameters towards survival and treatment options was obtained. Since 2000 the wolf population is reestablishing itself in Germany. In consequence to increasing numbers, livestock damage caused by wolves is on the rise, with horses likewise being affected. The aim of the study was to provide an overview of this challenge and its possible solutions.Based on a literature research, data on the wolf population in Germany, wolf-related damage as well as possibilities and limitations of herd protection for horses were evaluated. An online survey addressed to horse owners/keepers served to determine the actual and/or perceived threat posed by wolves and the resulting effects on horse husbandry.The literature search showed a continuous increase of the wolf population in recent years as well as a significant increase of wolf-caused livestock damage in general especially since 2016; although horses were rarely affected. Half of the 574 evaluated questionnaires were from Brandenburg and Lower Saxony. The greatest influence on the individual risk assessment concerning their own horses by the growing wolf population was the horse owners' knowledge of wolf attacks in their own county. Especially the aspects of keeping young horses as well as pasture keeping played a significant role. 64 % of respondents indicated that they had not changed their horse management practices despite the increasing wolf population. Only 8 of 576 horse owners had reported officially confirmed wolf attacks and 30 respondents had not reported a suspected wolf damage to official agencies. More than half of the respondents who had contact with a wolf advisor described the cooperation as either not or only slightly purposeful.The number of officially confirmed wolf attacks on horses is low. These numbers could be objectified by a routinely performed genetic test in case of corresponding suspicion. Despite the awareness of an increasing danger of horses by wolves, horse owners mostly do not undertake prophylactic protection measures. West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne viral pathogen of global importance and is considered to be the most widespread flavivirus. In Germany, first infections with WNV were detected in 2018 and it is expected for these to become more frequent in consequence to warmer winters followed by a rainy/humid springtime. WNV is maintained in an enzootic cycle between ornithophilic mosquitoes and certain wild bird species. Humans and horses are so-called "dead-end hosts" of a WNV infection. They frequently do not fall ill, however occasionally develop overt infections ranging from mild febrile symptoms (so-called "West Nile fever") up to severe encephalitis with fatal outcome. Therefore, it is important to recognize the clinical signs and to be able to distinguish a WNV infection from other possible differential diagnoses. The presented case report highlights rather uncommon clinical signs of a WNV infection such as non-specific fever, anorexia, or colic-like symptoms. In addition, possible differential diagnoses as well as the treatment are discussed. The time course of neutralizing antibodies following natural infection is reported, showing high levels of antibodies 7 months following the infection. Finally, antibody measurements demonstrated a very good immunologic response following a single WNV vaccination.Das West-Nil-Virus (WNV) ist ein von Mücken übertragenes virales Pathogen mit weltweiter Bedeutung und eines der am meisten verbreiteten Flaviviren. Infektionen mit dem WNV wurden erstmalig im Jahr 2018 in Deutschland nachgewiesen und sind aufgrund der zunehmend milderen Winter mit feuchtwarmem Frühjahr in Zukunft häufiger zu erwarten. Das WNV zirkuliert hauptsächlich in einem enzootischen Zyklus zwischen ornithophilen Mücken und bestimmten Wildvogelarten. Menschen und Pferde sind Fehlwirte („dead-end hosts”) einer WNV-Infektion, erkranken häufig nicht, doch können einige von ihnen nach Viruskontakt milde fieberhafte Symptome (sog. „West-Nil-Fieber“) bis hin zu schweren Gehirnentzündungen mit tödlichem Ausgang entwickeln. Deshalb ist es wichtig, die klinischen Symptome beim Pferd zu kennen und von anderen Differenzialdiagnosen zu unterscheiden. Im Fokus dieses Fallberichts steht daher, weniger bekannte Symptome einer WNV-Infektion wie unspezifisches Fieber, Anorexie oder kolikähnliche Symptome konkret aufzuzeigen. Weiterhin werden mögliche Differenzialdiagnosen erläutert und durchgeführte Therapien dargelegt. Zudem wurde der Verlauf des Titers neutralisierender Antikörper nach einer Feldinfektion über mehrere Monate verfolgt. Auch 7 Monate nach der Infektion lag der Titer noch auf einem hohen Niveau. Anschließend konnte nach einmaliger WNV-Impfung eine sehr gute immunologische Reaktion nachgewiesen werden.

Urachal patency is an umbilical disease in newborn foals. Etiologically, either the closure of the urachus remains absent after birth (persistent urachus) or the urachus was already closed and reopens at a later time (patent urachus). The most common causes of patent urachus are congenital defects, tearing of the navel above the predilection site, trauma, increased intravesical or abdominal pressure and umbilical infections. Patent urachus occurs more frequently in premature or weak and immunocompromised foals. Colts are more often affected than fillies. Typical clinical signs are apparent immediately after birth (persistent urachus) or 7-14 days postpartum (patent urachus). These include either dripping or a stream of urine through umbilicus during micturition as well as a moist umbilical area. The diagnosis is usually unambiguous. Typical laboratory findings are not described for patent urachus. Conservative treatment such as obliteration, cauterization or cryosurgery may be employed in cases lacking an inflammation of the urachus or other umbilical structures and when the urachal lumen measures less than 6 mm. Surgical treatment is indicated in foals with large urachal lumen, an umbilical infection or sepsis as well as when no therapeutic success is attained after a conservative treatment of 5-7 days. In most cases, prognosis is good, however complications such as umbilical inflammation, disseminating infections, and secondary joint diseases may significantly impair prognosis.Die Urachusfistel ist eine Nabelerkrankung des neugeborenen Fohlens. Ätiologisch bleibt entweder der Schluss des Urachus nach der Geburt aus (Urachus persistens) oder der Urachus war bereits geschlossen und öffnet sich zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt wieder (Urachus patens). Häufige Ursachen für eine Urachusfistel sind kongenitale Defekte, das Abreißen des Nabelstrangs oberhalb der Prädilektionsstelle, Traumata, erhöhter intravesikaler oder abdominaler Druck und Nabelinfektionen. Die Urachusfistel wird des Öfteren bei prämaturen oder lebens- und immunschwachen Fohlen beobachtet. Hengstfohlen sind häufiger betroffen als Stutfohlen. Erkrankte Fohlen zeigen entweder direkt nach der Geburt (Urachus persistens) oder meist 7–14 Tage post natum (Urachus patens) typische klinische Symptome wie Harnträufeln während der natürlichen Miktion oder Harnabsatz im Strahl über den Hautnabel sowie eine feuchte Nabelumgebung. Die Diagnose lässt sich i. d. R. eindeutig stellen. Typische labordiagnostische Befunde sind für die Urachusfistel nicht beschrieben. Konservative Therapieversuche mittels Verödung, Kauterisation oder Kryochirurgie können erfolgen, solange keine entzündlichen Veränderungen des Urachus und der übrigen Nabelstrukturen vorliegen und das Urachuslumen bis zu 6 mm beträgt. Eine Nabelresektion ist dann indiziert, wenn ein sehr weites Urachuslumen, eine begleitende Nabelinfektion oder eine Sepsis vorliegt oder wenn sich nach 5–7 Tagen konservativer Behandlungsdauer kein Therapieerfolg einstellt. In den meisten Fällen besteht eine gute Prognose, doch können Komplikationen wie Nabelentzündungen, streuende Infektionen und sekundäre Gelenkerkrankungen die Prognose erheblich verschlechtern.

Cell-based therapies for the treatment of osteoarthritis in equine patients experienced a real boom within the last few years. In every day medical practice, attending veterinary surgeons extract patient's blood or other autologous tissue samples and process the material for the purpose of administering the resulting product to the same patient under their own responsibility. Although being consistently classified as treatment option within the framework of regenerative medicine, the manufacturing processes, ingredients, and mechanisms of action remain highly diverse among cell-based therapies. Thus, sound knowledge about the latter ones forms the basis for therapeutic decision-making and best possible treatment regimes.In den letzten Jahren haben zellbasierte Therapeutika zur Behandlung von Osteoarthritiden in der Pferdemedizin einen regelrechten Boom erlebt. In der Praxis werden diese Therapeutika in Eigenverantwortung des Tierarztes aus Patientenblut oder anderen körpereigenen Geweben wie Fettgewebe oder Knochenmark hergestellt. The breeding of a healthy horse is the basic requirement for optimal performance. This is also specifically stated in the breeding goal of the Swiss warmblood horse and should be achieved through a strict selection of the stallions. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the current state of the population to optimize breeding. Data on the health status of Swiss warmblood horses in the age between 6 and 16 years (midlife) were collected by a telephone survey and analyzed descriptively. Following the heritability of the most common health problems were estimated. Data on 1,861 horses were collected between 2016 and 2018. Lameness (34%), colic (22%), sarcoids (19%), and pastern dermatitis (16%) were among the most common health problems, followed by back problems (13%), cough (10%), urticaria (10%), free fecal water syndrome (9%), nasal discharge (8%) and sweet itch (4%). Lameness was observed in 49% of the cases in the forelimbs, in 25% in the hindlimbs and in 26% in both. 27% of horses with colic have been hospitalized once and 8% have undergone colic surgery. Sarcoids became fewer or smaller in 89% of the treated and in 58% of the untreated horses. Bei 49% der lahmen Pferde war eine Vordergliedmasse betroffen, bei 25% eine Hintergliedmasse, bei 26% beides. 27% der Pferde mit Kolik wurden bereits einmal hospitalisiert und 8% einer Kolikoperation unterzogen. A 15-year-old Warmblood gelding was presented with multiple large, ulcerative, and crusty dermal lesions that had been existing for 4 years. Histopathology of a skin biopsy revealed cleft formation at the dermal-epidermal junction beneath the basal cells and above the basement membrane leading to the diagnosis of bullous pemphigoid. Immunosuppressive therapy with dexamethasone and azathioprine was initiated and after 14 weeks full remission of the ulcers was achieved. Scar tissue formation was evident in the areas of the formerly affected lesions. Following medication tapering over a period of 5 months, long-term therapy was continued with a maintenance dose of 0.5 mg/kg azathioprine daily. The ulcerative lesions recurred after 63 weeks of disease stabilization. Additionally, adverse drug reactions (acute laminitis and increased susceptibility to infections) were evident and the gelding was euthanized due to animal welfare considerations.Ein 15-jähriger Warmblutwallach wurde wegen multipler großflächiger, ulzerativer und krustiger Hautveränderungen vorgestellt, die seit 4 Jahren bestanden. Durch eine immunsuppressive Therapie mit Dexamethason und Azathioprin konnte nach 14 Wochen eine vollständige Remission der Hautläsionen erreicht werden, wobei die betroffenen Hautareale durch Narbengewebe ersetzt wurden. Die Dauertherapie wurde nach schrittweiser Dosisreduktion über 5 Monate mit einer Erhaltungsdosis von 0,5 mg/kg Azathioprin täglich fortgesetzt. Nach 63 Wochen erfolgreicher Stabilisierung kam es zu einem Rezidiv sowie zusätzlich zu unerwünschten Arzneimittelnebenwirkungen (akute Hufrehe und erhöhte Infektanfälligkeit), sodass der Wallach aus Tierschutzgründen euthanasiert wurde.

Uroperitoneum is a typical disease in newborn foals. An accumulation of urine develops in the abdominal cavity in consequence to a congenital or acquired leakage in the urinary tract. Colts are more frequently affected than fillies. The most common cause of uroperitoneum is a rupture of the dorsal urinary bladder wall. The urinary bladder is affected in 73.1 %, the urachus in 21.6 % and the ureter in 5.2 % of cases. Typical clinical signs occur 2-5 days postpartum, and encompass reduced general condition, abdominal distention, mild colic symptoms and unphysiologic micturition. Ultrasound examination in conjunction with abdominocentesis is considered as the gold standard of diagnostics. Typical laboratory findings are azotemia, metabolic acidosis as well as electrolyte imbalances, particularly hyperkalemia, hyponatriemia and hypochloridemia. Surgical treatment is the only reasonable therapy. Preoperative metabolic disorders and electrolyte abnormalities should be corrected prior to surgery. Especially hyperkalemia leads to a high potential for complications during general anesthesia. Following effective perioperative stabilization, the presence of a defect in the bladder wall or the urachus carries a good prognosis. In total, 63.6 % of the affected foals are healed. Most common complication is a recurrence of uroperitoneum caused by disruption of the suture line or an incomplete closure of the defect.Das Uroperitoneum ist eine typische Erkrankung des neugeborenen Fohlens. Durch einen kongenitalen oder erworbenen Defekt im Harntrakt kommt es zur Ansammlung von Urin in der Bauchhöhle. Männliche Tiere sind öfter betroffen als weibliche. Am häufigsten entwickelt sich ein Uroperitoneum durch eine Zusammenhangstrennung in der dorsalen Harnblasenwand. Die Harnblase ist in 73,1 %, der Urachus in 21,6 % und die Ureteren in 5,2 % der Fälle betroffen. Erkrankte Fohlen zeigen meist 2–5 Tage post natum typische klinische Symptome wie reduziertes Allgemeinbefinden, umfangsvermehrtes Abdomen, milde Koliksymptome und unphysiologisches Harnabsatzverhalten. Die sonografische Untersuchung in Verbindung mit der Abdominozentese gilt als Goldstandard der Diagnostik. Typische labordiagnostische Befunde sind Azotämie, metabolische Azidose und Elektrolytabweichungen, insbesondere Hyperkaliämie, Hyponatriämie und Hypochloridämie. Die chirurgische Versorgung des Defekts stellt die einzige adäquate Behandlung dar. Vor dem chirurgischen Eingriff sollten stets die metabolische Entgleisung und die Verschiebungen im Elektrolythaushalt korrigiert werden, da vor allem die Hyperkaliämie das Komplikationspotenzial der Anästhesie erhöht. Bei guter perioperativer Stabilisierung und einem Defekt an der Blase oder am Urachus ist die Prognose gut. Insgesamt werden 63,6 % der betroffenen Fohlen geheilt. Zu den häufigsten Komplikationen gehören Rezidive durch Nahtdehiszenz oder einen inkompletten Verschluss der Defekte.

Veterinarians play an essential role in the prevention of doping in equine sports, both as attending clinicians as well as official competition veterinarians. This complex task requires comprehensive knowledge concerning the pertinent regulations. These include official laws, such as the animal protection and medicines laws as as well as rules issued by the responsible equine sports authority. Furthermore, veterinarians are required to determine adequate withdrawal times following the legitimate use of medications in sport horses. This may be performed by applying appropriate data published by the respective equestrian sports authorities. In case such data is not available, pharmacokinetic heuristics elucidated in this article may be utilized in order to define suitable withdrawal times. Furthermore, veterinarians are recommended to advise horse owners concerning the risk of feed contaminants that may cause inadvertent positive anti-doping samples. In this context, the prevention of botanical contaminations in roughage is of importance in central Europe. Official veterinarians fulfil the task of anti-doping sampling during competitions. In order to guarantee a correct procedure, precautions for the avoidance of sample contamination are warranted and correct identification of the samples must be ensured. These procedures are described by means of the rules of the German Equestrian Federation.Tierärztinnen und Tierärzte erfüllen als Therapeuten und als Turniertierärzte besonders wichtige Aufgaben bei der Verhinderung von Doping im Pferdesport. Dies setzt umfangreiche und genaue Kenntnisse der Regularien voraus. Zu beachten sind sowohl staatliche Gesetze und Verordnungen, wie z. B. das Arzneimittel- und Tierschutzgesetz, als auch die für den jeweiligen Wettkampf anzuwendenden privatrechtlichen Verbandsregularien. Auf therapeutischer Seite steht der Tierarzt darüber hinaus insbesondere vor dem Problem, korrekte und angemessene Karenzzeiten für legitim angewendete Arzneimittel festzulegen. Dabei lassen sich für einen Teil der in der Pferdemedizin angewendeten Substanzen die von den Pferdesportverbänden veröffentlichten Werte nutzen. Stehen diese nicht zur Verfügung, können ersatzweise Karenzzeiten mithilfe pharmakokinetischer Heuristiken abgeschätzt werden, deren Anwendung in diesem Artikel erläutert wird. Darüber hinaus können Tierärzte bei der Beratung zur Sportpferdefütterung auf mögliche dopingrelevante Futtermittelkontaminanten hinweisen und so zur Vermeidung von Fällen unbeabsichtigten Dopings beitragen. In Mitteleuropa ist hier die Vermeidung botanischer Kontaminationen von Raufuttermitteln durch alkaloidhaltige Pflanzen wie Schlafmohn oder Stechapfel besonders bedeutsam. Turniertierärzten obliegt die Aufgabe der korrekten Probennahme bei der Durchführung von Anti-Doping-Kontrollen. Hierbei müssen Vorsichtsmaßnahmen zur Vermeidung einer Kontamination der Proben beachtet und genaue Abläufe zur Sicherung der Probenidentität und Probenqualität eingehalten werden. Dieses Prozedere wird am Beispiel der Regeln der Deutschen Reiterlichen Vereinigung exemplarisch erläutert.

Adenomatous hyperplasia of the equine allantoic epithelium (EAAH) is an infrequently observed nodular or plaque-like change in the placenta of the mare which is presented as a case description. EAAH is most frequently diagnosed in cases of aborted fetuses and is associated with inflammatory changes of the placenta. Histologically, different degrees of EAAH may be distinguished; however, these are not associated with specific clinical signs, degree of inflammation, a particular pathogen, or the frequency of abortions. It is assumed that EAAH represents a secondary, reactive change and has per se no influence on the vitality of the fetus itself. The lesion, however, should be taken seriously and considered as a warning sign for possible previous subclinical infections, even in clinically normal foals. This in turn should prompt more detailed clinical examination and monitoring of the mare and foal.Die equine adenomatöse Allantoishyperplasie (EAAH) ist eine selten beobachtete noduläre oder flächige Veränderung der Plazenta des Pferdes, die anhand eines Falls vorgestellt wird. Die EAAH wird gehäuft bei abortierten Feten diagnostiziert und ist mit entzündlichen Veränderungen der Plazenta assoziiert. Entsprechend ihrer Ausbildung werden histologisch verschiedene Grade der EAAH unterschieden, doch sind diese weder mit einer bestimmten klinischen Symptomatik, dem Entzündungsgrad, einem spezifischen Erreger oder der Häufigkeit von Aborten assoziiert. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass die EAAH eine sekundäre, reaktive Veränderung darstellt und selbst keinen Einfluss auf die Vitalität des equinen Fetus hat. Die Läsion sollte jedoch auch bei klinisch unauffälligen Fohlen als Warnsignal für mögliche vorausgegangene subklinische Infektionen ernst genommen werden und Anlass für eine genauere klinische Untersuchung und Überwachung von Stute und Fohlen geben.

The aim of this study was to analyze data concerning history, clinical course, and prognosis of retained fetal membranes in mares.Patient records of 121 hospitalized mares with retained placenta were evaluated. In 82 cases, additional blood examinations were performed and analyzed.There was no significant correlation between age, parity or course of parturition and retained placenta. Eighty-one mares (66.9 %) were presented solely with retained fetal membranes, 40 mares (33.1 %) had additional diseases at presentation, most commonly injuries of the labia, followed by perineal tears and lochiometra. During hospitalization 50 mares (41.3 %) developed one or more diseases, most frequently lochiometra (23 mares, 19 %), laminitis (17 mares, 14 %) and thrombophlebitis (11 mares, 9.1 %). Eight mares (6.6 %) were euthanized due to the course of their diesease. Blood examinations revealed a mean leucocyte concentration of 9.8 ± 3.9 G/l at presentation. Mean concentration of serum ionized calcium amounted to 1.5 ± 0.2 mmol/l. There was no statistically significant influence of blood parameters on clinical course or development of additional diseases.Retained placenta is a common disorder in the puerperium of the mare. In the presented study, most cases developed additional diseases and in 10 % of the mares, the clinical course led to euthanasia. No risk factors for the occurrence of retained fetal membranes or its clinical course could be identified.ZIEL: Das Ziel dieser Studie war es, Daten aus Anamnese, Verlauf und Prognose von Stuten mit Nachgeburtsverhaltungen zu analysieren.Die Auswertung umfasste Daten von 121 Stuten mit einer Nachgeburtsverhaltung, die stationär veterinärmedizinisch behandelt wurden. Bei 82 Stuten erfolgten zusätzlich Blutuntersuchungen.Zwischen Alter, Parität und Geburtsverlauf der Stute und dem Auftreten einer Nachgeburtsverhaltung ließ sich kein signifikanter Zusammenhang darstellen. Bei der Aufnahmeuntersuchung zeigten 81 Stuten (66,9 %) ausschließlich eine Nachgeburtsverhaltung, 40 Tiere (33,1 %) zusätzliche Erkrankungen, am häufigsten Verletzungen der Labien, gefolgt von einer Lochiometra und Dammrissen. Während des Klinikaufenthalts entwickelten 50 Stuten (41,3 %) eine oder mehrere weitere Erkrankungen. Am häufigsten wurden Lochiometra (23 Stuten, 19,0 %), Hufrehe (17 Stuten, 14,0 %) und Thrombophlebitis (11 Stuten, 9,1 %) diagnostiziert. Acht Stuten (6,6 %) wurden aufgrund des Krankheitsverlaufs euthanasiert. Die Blutuntersuchung ergab eine Leukozytenkonzentration von 9,8 ± 3,9 G/l. Die Konzentration von ionisiertem Kalzium im Blut betrug 1,5 ± 0,2 mmol/l. Kein erhobener Parameter hatte einen signifikanten Einfluss auf klinische Symptomatik, Ausbildung von Komplikationen und Genesung.Die Nachgeburtsverhaltung ist unter den Puerperalerkrankungen ein häufiges Krankheitsbild. Diese Erkrankung tritt selten isoliert auf bzw. im Verlauf der Behandlung kommen häufig weitere Erkrankungen hinzu, die im schlimmsten Fall zum Tod des Tieres führen. Anhand der erhobenen Daten konnten keine Risikofaktoren für die Entstehung und den Verlauf der Erkrankung dargestellt werden.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the degree of correlation between ultrasonographic findings of the stomach and the obtained reflux volume in horses with secondary gastric distension.In this prospective, controlled clinical study, warmblood horses presented with secondary gastric distension at the Clinic for Horses between 2017 and 2018 were included. Gastric fluid content was assessed sonographically by evaluating the number of intercostal spaces with detectable fluid level as well as the maximum height of gastric fluid. These findings were compared to the amount of reflux obtained.Eleven horses with a total of 52 examinations were included into the study. Gastric fluid levels were detectable over a median of 6 intercostal spaces (interquartil range [IQR] 3). The maximum extension recorded was over 9 intercostal spaces. Median obtained reflux amounted to 7 liters (IQR 6.5), with a maximum of 14 liters. The number of intercostal spaces with detectable fluid levels and obtained reflux volume exhibited a strong correlation with a correlation coefficient of 0.77 (p ≤ 0.001). Moderate correlation (correlation coefficient 0.59 with p ≤ 0.001) was observed between the maximum height of fluid levels and the obtained volume of reflux. Based on number of intercostal spaces with measurable gastric fluid levels estimation values for the obtainable reflux volume were established. When fluid levels are detectable over 5 or 6 intercostal spaces approximately 5.7-7.4 liters of reflux are to be expected. The maximum height of gastric fluid levels may be considered insufficient for an accurate prediction of reflux volume due to the moderate correlation of these 2 parameters.Due to the high correlation between number of intercostal spaces with sonographically detectable fluid levels and the obtained reflux volume, this parameter seems to be adequate to predict reflux amount. Based on this estimation, management of horses with paralytic ileus may be optimized.Ziel der Studie war zu klären, inwieweit ein Zusammenhang zwischen den Ultraschallbefunden am Magen und der gewonnenen Menge an Reflux bei Pferden mit sekundärer Magenüberladung besteht.In der prospektiven kontrollierten Studie wurden Warmblutpferde mit sekundärer Magenüberladung einbezogen, die in den Jahren 2017 bis 2018 in der Klinik für Pferde vorgestellt worden waren. Die gewonnene Menge an Reflux wurde sowohl der Anzahl der Interkostalräume mit sonografisch erfassbarem Flüssigkeitsspiegel als auch der maximalen Höhe des Flüssigkeitsspiegels im Magen gegenübergestellt.Im Untersuchungszeitraum erfolgten 52 Untersuchungen an 11 Pferden. Die Anzahl der Interkostalräume mit darstellbarem Flüssigkeitsspiegel im Magen betrug im Median 6 Interkostalräume (Interquartilsabstand, IQR 3). Die größte Ausdehnung umfasste 9 Interkostalräume. Die Menge an gewonnenem Reflux lag im Median bei 7 Litern (IQR 6,5) mit einem Höchstwert von 14 Litern. Zwischen der Anzahl der Interkostalräume mit erfassbarem Flüssigkeitsspiegel und gewonnener Refluxmenge wurde eine starke Korrelation mit einem Korrelationskoeffizienten von r = 0,77 (p ≤ 0,001) festgestellt. Bei der Korrelation zwischen maximaler Höhe des Flüssigkeitsspiegels und Refluxmenge ergab sich ein moderater Zusammenhang mit einem Korrelationskoeffizienten von r = 0,59 (p ≤ 0,001). Anhand der Zahl der Interkostalräume mit erfassbarem Flüssigkeitsspiegel konnten Vorhersagewerte für die zu erwartende Refluxmenge ermittelt werden. Bei einem darstellbaren Flüssigkeitsspiegel über 5 bzw. 6 Interkostalräume ist mit ca. 5,7 bzw. 7,4 Litern Reflux zu rechnen. Die Nutzung der Höhe des Flüssigkeitsspiegels erscheint aufgrund der moderaten Korrelation hierfür weniger geeignet.Aufgrund der starken Korrelation zwischen der Anzahl der Interkostalräume mit erfassbarem Flüssigkeitsspiegel und gewonnener Refluxmenge erscheint dieser Messwert zur Vorhersage des zu erwartenden Refluxes geeignet. Mithilfe dieser Vorhersage lässt sich das Management um den Patienten mit einem paralytischen Ileus optimieren.

Aim of the study was the retrospective evaluation regarding vision and recurrence in equine recurrent uveitis (ERU)-affected horses treated by intravitreal low-dose gentamicin injection in Tierklinik Alt Sammit during the years 2006-2013.The study included 50 equine patients (61 ERU-affected eyes) of different age and breed with different stages of ERU. The solution for the injection contained 4.0 mg sterile gentamicin per eye. The injection was performed according to the procedure described by Pinard et al. in 2005 under general anaesthesia in lateral recumbency of the patient and within a non-inflammatory period. The patients were monitored over a postoperative period of 2-96 months (mean 25.8 months, median 15 months).A total of 56 out of 61 treated eyes displayed no recurrence of ERU during the follow-up period. Recurrence of a single uveitic attack occurred in five eyes (8.2 %) within a period of 2 weeks to 28 months after surgery. Long-term stable vision was achieved in 43 out of 61 eyes (70.5 %). Postoperative blindness developed in 18 eyes, the majority hereof had already preoperatively displayed obvious pathologic ophthalmic findings with partly highly impaired vision. The main reason for a vision loss was the progression of a preoperatively existing cataract formation. Perioperative complications were limited to vitreous reflux into the subconjunctival space (two cases), subconjunctival haemorrhage in the area of the injection site (two cases), vitreous haemorrhage (one case) and two cases of immediate postoperative pain reaction associated with the intravitreal injection.The results of the therapy regarding the reduction of the recurrence rate and preservation of vision are comparable to those of vitrectomy. The complication rate is extremely low when using both the correct injection technique and amount of gentamicin solution. Therefore, the intravitreal injection of low-dose gentamicin is an inexpensive and uncomplicated alternative to vitrectomy.ZIEL: dieser Arbeit war die retrospektive Betrachtung der im Zeitraum 2006–2013 in der Tierklinik Alt Sammit mittels intravitrealer Low-Dose-Gentamicininjektion behandelten an ERU erkrankten Pferden hinsichtlich Visus und Rezidiven.Das Patientengut umfasste 50 Pferde (61 erkrankte Augen) unterschiedlichen Alters und Rasse, bei denen verschiedene Erkrankungsstadien vorlagen. Die Injektionslösung mit einem Gentamicingehalt von 4,0 mg pro Auge wurde jeweils unter sterilen Kautelen frisch hergestellt. Die Injektion erfolgte nach der von Pinard et al. 2005 beschriebenen Methode am Patienten in Allgemeinanästhesie und Seitenlage jeweils in einem entzündungsfreien Zeitraum. Der postoperative Beobachtungszeitraum betrug 2–96 Monate (Mittelwert 25,8 Monate, Median 15 Monate).56 von 61 (91,8 %) behandelte Augen zeigten sich im Nachbeobachtungszeitraum rezidivfrei. Bei fünf Augen (8,2 %) traten in einem Zeitraum von 2 Wochen bis 28 Monate nach dem Eingriff Rezidive auf. Bei 43 von 61 Augen (70,5 %) blieb der Visus langfristig erhalten. Postoperativ kam es bei 18 Augen zur Erblindung, wobei jedoch ein Großteil hiervon bereits präoperativ deutliche pathologische Veränderungen mit zum Teil hochgradiger Visuseinschränkung aufgewiesen hatten. Hauptursache für einen Visusverlust war die Progression einer präoperativ bestehenden Kataraktbildung. Perioperative Komplikationen beschränkten sich auf Reflux von Glaskörpermaterial in den subkonjunktivalen Raum in zwei Fällen, zwei subkonjunktivale Blutungen im Bereich der Injektionsstelle, eine intravitreale Blutung sowie zwei Fälle mit einer unmittelbar postoperativ aufgetretenen Schmerzreaktion auf die intravitreale Injektion als solche.Die erzielten Therapieresultate lassen sich hinsichtlich Visus und Rezidiv mit denen der Vitrektomie vergleichen. Die Komplikationsrate ist bei korrekt angewendeter Injektionstechnik und -menge äußerst gering. Die intravitreale Low-Dose-Gentamicininjektion stellt damit eine kostengünstige und komplikationsarme Alternative zur Vitrektomie dar.

A 2-year-old Arabian horse was presented with severe colic symptoms. During explorative laparotomy, a jejuno-jejunal invagination secondary to a submucosal intestinal mass was detected. The involved jejunal segment was surgically removed and an end-to-end anastomosis was created. Opening the specimen demonstrated the presence of a nodular mass on the head of the intussusceptum, measuring 10 cm in diameter, and almost completely obliterating the intestinal lumen. Additionally, a severe hyperemia of the jejunal mucosa was visible. Histological examination, which revealed a well-demarcated mass in the submucosa of the jejunum consisting of well-differentiated adipocytes, led to the diagnosis of an intramural lipoma. The small intestinal mucosa displayed mild to moderate signs of congestion. Pedunculated lipomas in the mesentery of horses causing intestinal volvulus and obstruction are a frequent cause of small-intestine strangulation in aged horses. To the authors' knowledge, intramural intestinal lipomas to date have not been described in the horse. The mare recovered without complications and was free of colic symptoms after 6 months.Eine 2-jährige Araberstute wurde mit schweren Koliksymptomen vorgestellt. Die explorative Laparotomie ergab eine Jejunuminvagination verursacht durch eine intramurale Umfangsvermehrung. Das betroffene Jejunumsegment wurde reseziert und eine End-zu-End Anastomose geschaffen. Am eröffneten Resektat zeigte sich eine noduläre Umfangsvermehrung innerhalb der Submukosa am Anfang des Intussuszeptums mit einem Durchmesser von 10 cm, die zu einer beinahe vollständigen Obliteration des intestinalen Lumens führte. Zusätzlich war eine ausgeprägte Hyperämie der Jejunummukosa erkennbar. Bei der histopathologischen Untersuchung wurde in der Submukosa des Jejunums eine gut abgrenzbare Umfangsvermehrung bestehend aus gut differenzierten Adipozyten festgestellt und die Diagnose eines intramuralen Lipoms gestellt. Die Dünndarmmukosa zeigte leichte bis mittelschwere Anzeichen einer Kongestion. Ein Lipoma pendulans induziert bei älteren Pferden häufig eine Dünndarmstrangulation, die operativ behoben werden muss. Nach Kenntnis der Autoren wurde ein intramurales Lipom bisher nicht als Ursache einer Dünndarminvagination beschrieben. Die Stute erholte sich komplikationslos und zeigte auch 6 Monate nach der Operation keine weiteren Kolikanzeichen.

Systemic administration of tiludronate or clodronate decreases lameness in some horses suffering from navicular syndrome within 2-6 months of treatment. In horses that fail to respond to the first treatment, a follow-up treatment may still improve the lameness. Horses with a lameness duration of less than 6 months have better odds of experiencing improvement in lameness. Bisphosphonate (BP) treatment can result in renal damage, and it is recommended to assess renal function prior to and after treatment. Horses with pre-existing renal compromise should not be treated with BP, as this may promote deterioration of their renal status. Furthermore, BP should not be administered concurrently with non-steroidal antiinflammatory medications or other nephrotoxic drugs. One of the most common side effects of BP treatment in the horse is development of colic signs, which usually resolves with hand walking. In cases where medical treatment is warranted, N-butylscopolamine, xylazine, detomidine or butorphanol should be administered alone or in combination. The treatment with non-steroidal antiinflammatory medications is not recommended. In horses with muscle fasciculations, plasma electrolyte concentrations should be determined. The route of administration for BP should follow manufacturer recommendations, as local applications such as intraarticular injections or administration via regional limb perfusion may not be safe and are thus currently not recommended.

The nutritional status of 36 patients with equine pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) under pergolide treatment was investigated.The body condi tion score (BCS) and feeding were determined at the beginning of the study and after 60 and 120 days. Sampled blood for control of pergolid therapy were used for insulin and glucose measurement. A standardized questionnaire regarding the symptoms of the disease, including hypertrichosis and weight change, was completed by the owners.The mean BCS (scale of 1 = cachexia to 9 = grossly obese) was 3.1 ± 0.8 (large horses 2.7 ± 0.8, ponies 3.5 ± 0.8). The mean energy requirement of the large horses was estimated to be 74 ± 10 MJ of metabolizable energy, but the intake amounted only to 65 ± 15 MJ. There was a significant correlation between the BCS and the estimated energy intake in percent of requirements in the large horses. The energy requirements of the ponies were generally met. The patients were fed a mean of 2.0 ± 0.7 meals of roughage per day (total roughage intake per day 0.2-2.1 kg/100 kg body weight) and a maximum of one meal of concentrates. Sixteen ponies and one large horse did not receive any concentrates, whereas five ponies and 14 horses were fed concentrates (mean amount for ponies 0.15 kg and for large horses 0.8 kg). The requirements for zinc, copper, selenium and vitamins A and E were not met in the majority of patients. Blood glucose levels were within the reference range in all samples, but insulin levels were elevated in seven animals at least at one sampling point. The serious underweight of some of the patients was not recognized as a problem by some of the owners.Owners of PPID patients need more guidance on body condition scoring, amount of feed, number of meals, and logistics of feeding to avoid malnutrition of their animals.

The retrospective study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of true thrombocytopenia and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-induced pseudothrombocytopenia in horses and ponies and to assess the diagnostic and prognostic utility of true thrombocytopenia.In 3592 patients (2008-2015) hematological data (ADVIA® 2120, Siemens) were reviewed. Inclusion criteria were platelet counts90 x 109/l (EDTA-blood) and/or84 x 109/l (citrate blood). Thrombocytopenia was classified as true, EDTA-induced, and questionable. Patients with true thrombocytopenia were assigned to nine groups according to their history and four groups depending on the main diagnosis (inflammatory disorders, neoplasia, non-inflammatory intestinal disease, others). The frequencies of diagnoses were compared to the overall clinic population.Thrombocytopenia was diagnosed in 123/3592 patients (3.4 %) and classified as true in 60/123 (49 %), EDTA-induced in 6/123 (5 %), and questionable in 57/123 (46 %) of cases. In true thrombocytopenia, the most common reasons for referral were lethargy (23/60, 38 %), fever (19/60, 32 %), and colic (17/60, 28 %). In these patients inflammation, neoplasia, non-inflammatory intestinal disease, and others were diagnosed in 25/60 (42 %), 11/60 (18 %), 10/60 (17 %), and 14/60 (23 %) of cases, respectively. Compared with the overall clinic population, there was an increased frequency of neoplasia (18 % versus 1 %). The mortality rate was significantly higher at 38 % in comparison with the overall population. Remarkably high mortality rates of 32 % and 82 % were observed in patients with inflammatory and neoplastic diseases, respectively.True thrombocytopenia is relatively rare in horses with internal medical conditions and should be verified by measurement in samples with citrate as anticoagulant. Thrombocytopenia is rarely the primary reason for referral and is a negative prognostic factor in neoplastic and inflammatory diseases.

In 2017, no new active pharmaceutical ingredients were released on the German market for horses or food-producing animals. Four established veterinary active pharmaceutical ingredients became available for additional species: the ectoparasitic Fluralaner (Exzolt®) of the isoxazoline group was additionally authorized for chickens, the macrolide antibiotics Gamithromycin (Zactran®) and Tulathromycin (Draxxin®) for sheep and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug Tolfenamic Acid (Tolfedol®) from the fenamate group for cattle and pigs. Additionally, one drug with a new combination of active ingredients, one drug with a new pharmaceutical form and one drug with a new mode of administration have been launched on the market for horses and food-producing animals.

Deworming management is important for a good herd health status in horses. The aim of this study was to present differences between farms using a regular deworming management and a selective anthelmintic therapy approach (SAT), respectively.An online survey was conducted to identify deworming practices on horse farms. The questionnaire included questions on the number of animals kept on the farm, housing, hygiene, and deworming practices.In total, 283 questionnaires were analyzed. A total of 155 farms used a regular deworming management (RD) and 77 farms used a SAT approach. Farms using SAT were more often small, privately organized farms in which recently introduced horses were more thoroughly checked and horse droppings were removed more frequently from the pasture. Most farms using SAT dewormed 0 to once annually (55%), whereas this was only 3% in the case of farms using RD (p ≤ 0.001). Farms using SAT had a higher annual cost of 37.50 € per horse for sample examination and deworming. Many farms using an RD (69%) were willing to change their deworming management and 43% would be interested in introducing SAT.Using selective deworming reduced the number of anthelmintic therapies required annually. However, the lower costs for anthelmintic drugs did not counterweigh the cost for sample examination. Overall, there was a low willingness to improve the pasture management. A combination of pasture and deworming management is of great importance for a successful selective deworming management.

Resistances to antimicrobials pose serious public health challenges. This issue concerns both human and veterinary medicine and can only be solved by a multidisciplinary approach. A comprehensive concept is, therefore, being worked out within the StAR (strategy antibiotic resistance) program in order to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics for humans as well as animals. In this context, the AntibioticScout (www.AntibioticScout. ch) offers a new online tool for the prudent use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine. By involving all stakeholders, the guidelines included in the AntibioticScout will result in a nationwide accepted standard for the treatment of bacterial infections in animals. An additional system for the rapid reporting of cases of suspected lack of efficacy of antimicrobials is integrated to allow early detection of emerging resistance and the immediate launch of risk mitigation measures. A first version of the AntibioticScout for the treatment of dogs, cats and horses is available by the end of 2016. All stakeholders are now invited to contribute to the development of the AntibioticScout decision support.Resistenzen gegenüber antimikrobiellen Wirkstoffen stellen das Gesundheitssystem vor grosse Herausforderungen. Heart murmurs and arrhythmias are common in horses. Assessment of their clinical relevance concerning health, performance, safety and longevity of sports horses is of highest importance. A comprehensive cardiovascular examination is crucial for diagnosis and assessment of the severity of disease. Recently, an expert panel of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM) developed a consensus statement containing recommendations for sports horses with heart disease. This article summarizes the most relevant recommendations for practitioners, considering the most common and most important cardiac disorders in adult sports horses. These include mitral, aortic and tricuspid insufficiency, ventricular septal defects, atrial fibrillation as well as supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias. Despite the fact that most horses with cardiovascular disease maintain a sufficient performance capacity, regular evaluations are indicated in horses with clinically relevant disorders. Under certain circumstances, horses with moderate to severe structural disease, with persistent untreated atrial fibrillation and with certain ventricular arrhythmias might still be used by informed adult riders. Horses with complex ventricular arrhythmias, pulmonary hypertension or congestive heart failure must not be ridden or driven and should be retired.Herzgeräusche und Arrhythmien kommen beim Pferd häufig vor. Pferde mit mittel- und hochgradigen strukturellen Erkrankungen, mit persistierendem unbehandeltem Vorhofflimmern und mit gewissen ventrikulären Arrhythmien können unter Umständen, nach Aufklärung über bestehende Risiken, durch erwachsene Reiter weiter genutzt werden. Les chevaux souffrant d’altérations structurelles d’importance moyenne à élevées, de fibrillations atriales persistantes non traitées ou de certaines arythmies ventriculaires peuvent, suivant les cas et après explication des risques encourus, continuer à être utilisés par des cavaliers adultes. Una valutazione cardiovascolare completa è essenziale per determinare la gravità della malattia e per raggiungere gli obiettivi preposti. L’American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) e l’European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM) hanno recentemente istituito un gruppo di esperti, che ha formulato raccomandazioni per i cavalli da sport affetti da malattie cardiache in un comunicato congiunto. Quest’ articolo riassume le raccomandazioni principali per i veterinari considerando le malattie cardiache più frequenti e significative nei cavalli da sport adulti. Questi disturbi sono: insufficienza mitrale, aortica e tricuspidale, difetto interventricolare, fibrillazione atriale, aritmie sopraventricolari e ventricolari. Anche se la maggior parte dei cavalli affetti da una malattia cardiovascolare mostri ugualmente alte prestazioni, degli esami periodici approfonditi sono indicati nei pazienti con modifiche clinicamente rilevanti. I cavalli con malattie strutturali di medio o alto livello, con fibrillazione atriale persistente non trattata e con alcune aritmie ventricolari possono essere utilizzati in determinate circostanze e dopo aver indagato sui possibili rischi da un cavallerizzo esperimentato. I cavalli affetti da aritmie ventricolari complesse, ipertensione polmonare o insufficienza cardiaca congestizia non dovrebbero essere montati o guidati.

Various opioids are available for use in equine medicine. Studies directly comparing their analgesic effects and side effects are rare. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the antinociceptive effect and the duration of analgesia of two different doses of morphine, butorphanol and levomethadone in horses.Eight adult, healthy horses were used for this randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded cross-over trail. Each horse received placebo (P = 0.9% saline) and morphine (MIn group MLevomethadone induced a dose-dependent increase and prolongation of analgesia, whereas with butorphanol there was no difference between dosages regarding duration and intensity of analgesia. Morphine provided detectable analgesia only in the high dose of 0.2 mg/kg.Levomethadone and morphine in the low dose (0.1 mg/kg) produced only minor and short lived anti-nociception and further studies are necessary to give a profound dose recommendation for the use of these drugs in horses.

In the ongoing discussion regarding the aetiopathogenesis of equine recurrent uveitis (ERU) it was the aim of the present study to elucidate the relationship of leptospira infection and ERU. In a population of 225 horses leptospira were examined in vitreous humor by culture and leptospira antibody were detected in vitreous humor and serum samples. Preoperative serum samples were collected from 221/225 ERU patients of different age, gender and breed. Undiluted vitreous humor was aseptically taken from 198/225 patients that underwent pars plana vitrectomy at the beginning of surgery and from 27/225 patients' eyeball after enucleation: Serum and vitreous humor were tested for specific leptospiral antibodies by microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Furthermore, vitreous humor was examined by culture. 20 patients which were euthanized due to a live-threatening disease other than ERU served as a control group. A total of 127/221 (57.5%) horses had serum antibodies (≥ 1:100). Most frequently antibodies against L. interrogans serovar Grippotyphosa were detected (79/127), followed by L. interrogans serovar lcterohaemorrhagiae (34/127) and L. interrogans serovar Bratislava (29/127). Only 79/225 horses (35.1%) had leptospiral antibodies in vitreous humor, in which L. interrogans serovar Grippotyphosa (67/79) was identified most frequently followed by L. interrogans serovar Pomona (18/79) and L. interrogans serovar lcterohaemorrhagiae (8/79) which was identified as single or multiple reaction. Isolation of leptospira from vitreous humor was positive in 34/212 horses (16%). 10/20 control horses had a positive antibody titer against leptospira in serum and 2/20 horses in vitreous humor, whereas there was no leptospira detected in culture. The result of 84% negative cultures from vitreous humor of 212 ERU patients is decisive for the diagnosis and therapy of ERU.

Aim of the study was to detect antibodies and potential risk factors for an infec- tion with Leptospira in horses in Middle Germany. Serum samples of 314 horses were examined retrospectively by microscopic agglutination test for the presence of antibodies against eight Leptospira serovars. In total, 17.2% (n = 54) of the horses were positive for one or more of the serovars analyzed. The most prevalent serovar was lcterohaemorrhagiae (11.1%), followed by serovar Bratislava (9.6 %) and Grippotyphosa (1.9%). Mares showed a significantly higher occurrence of antibodies (p0.05) than geldings or stallions. Horses used for breeding have a significantly lower risk than horses used in sport or horses used for leisure activity. There was also a significantly higher prevalence (p0.05) in summer than in the other seasons. No significant influence of breed, husbandry conditions and age on the antibody occurrence was observed (p0.05). The clinical chemical parameters did not differ significantly between horses with positive or negative Leptospira antibody result (p0.05). It became apparent that horses can be infected with Leptospira without developing of clinical symptoms.

Despite advances in surgical technique in abdominal surgery, incisional complications are frequently reported following ventral midline laparotomy in horses. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of incisional complications at our clinic and to identify possible risk factors. Furthermore, we investigated whether suturing the peritoneum leads to a reduction of incisional complications.In this retrospective study, records of patients of the Large Animal Clinic for Surgery of the University of Leipzig from January 2010 to December 2015 were analysed. Horses with ventral midline laparotomy following colic were included in the study. Evaluated parameters comprised breed, sex, age of the horse, localisation of the colic disease, invasiveness of the surgical intervention, duration of general anaesthesia, suture pattern of the laparotomy wound and postoperative fever or leukopenia. Incisional complications included suture dehiscence, exudation from the wound and incisional hernia formation. Wound oedema formation was evaluated separately.Incisional complications in the form of exudation and suture dehiscence occurred in 8.9% (18/202) of the horses. Postoperative hernia formation was observed in 5.2% (9/173) of patients. Breed, sex, localisation of the colic disease, invasiveness of the surgical intervention, duration of general anaesthesia and postoperative leukopenia did not influence the frequency of incisional complications. An increased risk of incisional complications was found in horses aged 20 years and older (odds ratio [OR] 17.90), in animals with postoperative fever (OR 7.48) and in horses with unsutured peritoneum (OR 7.68). Furthermore, patients with moderate and severe wound oedema displayed a significantly increased risk for the development of incisional complications.Suture pattern is the only risk factor that can be directly influenced by the surgeon. Because a peritoneal suture is associated with a decreased risk of incisional complications, it should be standard practice when closing a laparotomy wound in the horse.
