ANIMAL breeding , *FISH conservation , *WILDLIFE conservation , *ANIMAL species , *CONTRACTS , *FISH breeding - Abstract
The article describes the Citizen Conservation (CC) program, which aims to utilize private animal keepers for species conservation. Tina Nagorzanski is the fish species manager at CC. CC started with amphibians five years ago, but in the future, fish will also be a focus. Potential keepers do not need an official certificate of competence, but their experience and knowledge in keeping and breeding animals are checked. Private keepers, zoos, and scientific institutions are treated equally and must sign the same agreement for the animals. CC does not mix their animals with privately kept animals of the same species. CC provides recommendations for keeping, but there is room for individual decisions as long as significant deviations are discussed in advance with the CC office. Animal keeping must comply with CC guidelines, and regular inspections may take place. In case of diseases or deaths, veterinary examinations can be carried out, with CC covering the costs. CC welcomes support from keepers, such as experience reports or financial assistance. The CC project for the permanent conservation breeding of fish species is based on science-based population management statistical tools and clear breeding goals for a period of 40 years. Deformed or offspring not suitable for further breeding are removed from breeding and can either be further cared for or used as feed. Excess animals can be sold to certified dealers to support species conservation. The CC program collaborates with the Parosphromenus Project and plans to include additional species. CC is funded by various partners and offers support options such as sponsorships. Currently, the program manages 17 different species but plans to expand to a total of 29 species. COST of living , *POLITICAL surveys , *ANIMAL species , *DEMOGRAPHIC surveys , *PLANT species , *CLIMATE change - Abstract
The article "Dear nature, climate, and human protectors" in the magazine "Seabirds" deals with the prioritization of climate change in society. Although climate change poses an obvious threat to animal and plant species as well as to humans, the importance of the issue is decreasing in political surveys and concerns of the population. Rising cost of living, expensive housing, and fear of foreign influence dominate the public debate. The article emphasizes the necessity of no longer neglecting climate change and presents a media project that aims to document the effects of climate change on the Norderoog Hallig. The project is supported by the Ministry for Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment, and Nature. [Extracted from the article]

FLOWERING of plants , *ANIMAL species , *VESPIDAE , *PLANT stems , *INSECT nests , *BEES - Abstract
From 2014 to 2021, 146 animal species were detected on a balcony nature garden (2 loggias) located on the 5th floor of a Munich apartment building with approximately 80 species of flowering wild plants annually. Of the 136 taxa of lower animals, 112 could be identified to species level. The most species-rich groups were flies and mosquitoes (29 species), bees (27), and spiders (19). Nesting aids (plant stems, wood) were colonized by 6 wild bee species, at least 2 digger wasps, a solitary vespid wasp (Vespidae) and some parasitoids (flies, wasps) living with aculeate hymenoptera. ECONOMIC uncertainty , *ANIMAL welfare , *AVIAN influenza , *CATTLE feeding & feeds , *ANIMAL species , *SWINE farms - Abstract
In 2022, industrial compound feed production in the EU decreased by more than 5 million tons compared to the previous year. The main reasons for this decline are avian influenza, economic uncertainty, and environmental and animal welfare policies. The pig sector was particularly affected, experiencing a decrease of 6.7%, followed by the poultry segment with a decrease of 3.2%. Cattle feed production only slightly decreased by 0.5 million tons. It is expected that the production of the main animal species will continue to decline in 2023. Avian influenza, economic uncertainty, and environmental and animal welfare policies remain the main drivers for the upcoming year. [Extracted from the article]

WETLAND restoration , *SPECIES diversity , *ANIMAL species , *SCIENTIFIC community , *BEAVERS , *SCIENTISTS - Abstract
Current situation and meta-analysis for Europe and North America During recent decades scientists have found increasing evidence that the impact of beavers on semiaquatic ecosystems has led to increasing biodiversity. Here we summarize worldwide knowledge of the impact of beavers on biodiversity and give many demonstrative examples of the effect of landscape transforming by beavers on different animal groups. We assessed data from 53 scientific studies with a comparable experimental approach, mainly from North America and Northern Europe, in a meta-analysis and focused on the effects of beavers on species richness of animals and plants, as well as on single taxonomic groups of animal species. The results show that in 83 % of studies the effect of beavers led to an increasing species richness in animals and in 79 % to an increasing species richness in plants at a landscape level. The data show that the transformation of wetlandsby beavers effect an increasing species richness at a landscape level and induce a unique habitat heterogeneity. This offers the perspective for using the influence of beavers on wetlands as instruments for achieving the goals of the EU Water Framework Directive and for the restoration of wetlands, increasingly suggested by scientists in international scientific studies. Scientists have investigated the effects of the live yeast Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-1079 on the gut microbiota in various animal species. The results show that the live yeast has positive effects on the populations of bacteria in the gut, especially in piglets or calves before weaning or in adult animals in stressful situations. These effects lead to improved feed efficiency and/or increased growth. Additionally, health benefits have been observed, such as a reduction in treatments for digestive and respiratory diseases. This results in financial gain for the producer and strengthens the recommendation for the use of this probiotic in agriculture. [Extracted from the article]

WIND power & the environment , *ANIMAL species , *WIND power plant management , *MIGRATORY birds , *WILDLIFE conservation laws , *ANIMAL behavior - Abstract
During the last years the development of wind energy has been accompanied by publications aiming to ensure quality control on the question of effects on wildlife species. The aim is not only to provide knowledge for the best possible avoidance of negative relations between certain animal species and wind energy for facility planning, such as the question of bird collisions or biotic disturbances in the marine environment. Additionally, both European and national species protection laws explicitly require to deal with all relevant effects on nature and endangered species. The paper aims to synoptically illustrate the state of research. On the one hand it shows what kind of knowledge about the impacts of the wind energy on wildlife species can be considered as accepted for practical planning. On the other hand it aims to identify remaining knowledge gaps, for example caused by contradicting study results. The results presented here are based on an international synopsis carried out at the Institute of Technology Berlin (TU Berlin). Some effects have already been investigated several times, such as the influence of locational factors on the spatial behaviour of birds of prey, whilst only little secure knowledge has been gained on other important questions, such as the habituation of migratory birds to wind parks or impacts on population level. These findings have led to a number of subsequent questions, e.g. the availability of monitoring data in a suitable way. This would help to increase information of potential impacts on wildlife during the further development of wind energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EnglishThis article intends to challenge the commonly admitted assumption that the Aristotelian treatment of emotions in his biology is teleologic. My proposal is that this sort of functional explanation of emotions in nature is rather to be found in Aquinas, Descartes, and especially in Darwinian and Neo-Darwinian theories of emotions. In section 2, I present the sorts of teleological explanations that Aristotle admits and uses in his biological writings. I section 3, I analyze Descartes’ and especially Darwin’s account of emotions and show that they adapt to the Aristotelian explanatory model presented in 2. Then, in section 4, I offer several arguments based on an analysis of Aristotles’ biological treatises in order to show that this sort of teleological or functional explanation of emotions is not present in them. Instead, what we find in these writings are materialist explanations of the diverse characters and emotions of animal species. Finally, I suggest the idea, to be pursued further, that there is an asymmetry between the natural, non-teleologic treatment of emotions in Aristotle and the function he assigns to them from the point of view of practical rationality.

History, relevance and development of veterinary pathological collections are presented by analyzing and comparing the collections from Berlin, Munich, Vienna and Zurich of the 19th and 20th century. The indices of the collections are analyzed according to the frequency of animal species, body parts, organs and disease processes or etiologies respectively. Collection differences allow to draw conclusions on the founder of the collection and historical significance. Each collection was part of a university and thus involved in teaching and research. This often ensured the continuous existence of the collections. Nevertheless, changing teaching methods made pathological collections increasingly redundant. A comparison with other university collections, such as those of the University of Zurich, show new application aspects for existing collections and required measurement are discussed.

The article examines the presence of loanwords of Amerindian origin in Slovak, in which Spanish (or Portuguese) acted as the first European intermediate language for all the other European languages. The criteria for their inclusion are presented, and an exhaustive corpus of all such loanwords found in selected prestigious works of Slovak lexicography is thus formed. The total number of entries is 106. These are then analysed and classified in terms of assimilation processes: regularized and most frequent changes on different levels are shown; origin: almost four fifths of the corpus comes from four major sources (Tupi-Guarani languages Quechua, Arawakan languages and Nahuatl); thematic area (an absolute prevalence of specific New World geographical features and botanical and animal species unknown in Europe); chronology of occurrence (the first being the word čokoláda "chocolate", the earliest written occurrence of which dates from 1691) and semantic development in the Slovak language, which does not have a parallel in Spanish. Moreover, the process of borrowing Amerindian loanwords has not finished. In today's connected and globalized world we can observe new loanwords that do not yet appear in dictionaries, although they have already settled in the Slovak lexicon. These usually refer to gastronomic or religious concepts.

PRESBYTIS hosei ,ORIENTAL small-clawed otter ,ANIMAL species ,ZOO animals ,ENVIRONMENTAL enrichment ,SOCIAL interaction ,ORANGUTANS as pets - Abstract
Abstract: Keeping different species together is getting more and more common in zoos, because it can entail several behavioural enrichment factors for the animals as long as the enclosure meets the requirements of all species and a suitable composition of animals is living in the mix. The aim of this study is to evaluate a community of Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii), northern plains grey langurs (Semnopithecus entellus) and Asian small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinerea) in the Zoological Garden of Gelsenkirchen. The behavioural monitoring of the animals reveals that the orangutans spend less time with feeding behaviour and locomotion than free ranging orangutans, whereas the percentage of resting periods is much higher. This difference is probably caused by the easy availability of food. The northern plains grey langurs show ethograms whose proportions are very similar to those of free ranging grey langurs in literature. In both species the juvenile individuals have higher activity levels than the adult animals. The analysis of the spatial use of the enclosure by the orangutans reveals that they use about half of the area and prefer places at the ground for resting. On an average the orangutans spend around 50% of the monitored situations on the ground which is a high level for an arboreal living species. The time spent on the ground is distinctly lower in orangutans reared by their parents than in hand reared individuals which are probably affected by humans. Another influencing point is the sex. Adult male orangutans spend more time on the ground. This is a fact which is also known from free ranging animals. Related to their environment free ranging northern plains grey langurs show a high adaptability and the individuals in the zoo use about 70% of the enclosure and use frequently all structuring elements like trees, roots and ropes. Like the orangutans the grey langurs have preferred areas in the enclosure where they spend their resting periods with grooming, lactating and the feeding periods. Generally, the Asian small-clawed otters spend less time in the enclosure than the monkeys and use less than one third of the area. Most of the time free ranging orangutans live solitarily and thus it was predictable that there is only a fraction of intraspecific interactions between orangutans whereas the percentage of interactions between langurs is higher. The northern plains grey langurs live in harem troops and social interactions are more than 40% of the zoo langur's ethogram on an average. Asian small-clawed otters are also highly social animals and intraspecific contacts take place very often. The analysis of the monitored interspecific interactions between all species reveals that the juvenile animals of both primate species have distinct more interspecific contacts than the adult animals. In most cases the interactions are positive or playful contacts. Especially between a 12-year-old female orang-utan and one of the juvenile langurs friendly interactions with body contact were monitored often. Between the adult animals agonistic contacts or submission are most common. The Asian small-clawed otters are very interested in the orangutans and often approach towards them to have a sniff or pull their hair. The community of all three species is quite harmonious and serves as behavioural enrichment for all individuals. For the visitors the mixed enclosure is a benefit as well. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

TURTLES ,ANIMAL breeding ,ANIMAL species ,ZOOS ,SUMMER - Abstract
Abstract: Dresden Zoo bred successfully the Malaysian giant turtle (Orlitia borneensis) in summer 2012. This was the first successful breeding of this species in Germany. Little is known about biology and behaviour of this large river turtle and keeping and especially breeding of this endangered species in captivity is a rarity. In order to create optimal breeding conditions Dresden Zoo rebuilt an enclosure for the turtles in 2010. An area with soil and sand was built for the expected egg deposition. After arranged matings one female dug a nest on this area and buried her eggs. Nine eggs were secured and transferred into an incubator in a box filled with a 1:1 mixture of vermiculite and water. The average temperature was 29°C. After problems with the temperature regulation the damaged incubator had to be replaced. Because of an estimated incubation period of 3–4 months, one egg was opened on day 127 of incubation. A live hatchling with a big yolk sac was fetched. Because of the non-reabsorbed yolk sac the hatchling was further incubated. On day 154 of incubation all eggs were manually opened and the hatchlings were fetched. All of these hatchlings showed a non-reabsorbed yolk sac and were incubated onwards in a box with wet paper towel until the yolk sac was completely reabsorbed. After that the hatchlings were housed solitarily in a box with water of approximately 4cm height and a small land area. Two days after housing food was offered for the first time. All hatchlings accepted the offered food consisting of herbal as well as of animal products and later turtle pellets and self-made turtle jelly. Though little is known about breeding this species, the breeding success of Dresden Zoo demonstrates a possible approach to this topic. But there are still things to optimize. For example the manual hatching is something that should be avoided in future. Fertilization and hatching rate of 100% are promising and up to date eight out of nine hatchlings are still alive. Abstract: Lycaon pictus has been named by a variety of common names, such as “African Wild Dog”, “African Hunting Dog” and their adequates in other languages. The article summarizes the history of naming in that species concluding with a new recommendation by the SSP as well as the EEP for that species to rename it as Painted Dog. As the translation of that name into German is an unhandy term it is suggested to name it “Picasso-Hund” in that language. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This article reports on the relationships and differences between humans and apes. Several topics are discussed, such as the similarities between humans and primates, how humans started being considered as being a part of the animal kingdom after the 1700s, as well as how the theory of evolution and various discoveries in genetics and ethnology have uncovered more similarities between animals and humans. Also discussed are several different sources about the distinct differences between primates and humans.

Abstract: Over 200 years after the great Goldau rockslide, mighty rocks still lay strewn where they fell. In 1925, in the rockslide area, Nature and Animal Park Goldau was founded. The compound plays a significant role in showing domestic and European animals. Deer, wolves, bears, lynxes, birds of prey and domesticated animals – approximately 700 animals and 100 animal species – live in a natural habitat of some 34 hectares. Visitors can watch the animals all year round. Rest areas, tours, discovery stations, and – due to the extensive free running zones where people can feed sika deer, mouflon, and other cloven-hoofed animals – beckon people to stay. In 2009, a fascinating enclosure for bears and wolves went operational, and, two years after the opening, has withstood the test of endurance. Only the bears had to be stopped in front of the caves’ trench. Vegetation is very good thanks to the planting having been done long before the opening. Nothing has to be refitted. 700 groups can be accompanied to tour the compound annually). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

MELURSUS ursinus ,PREDATORY animals ,ANIMAL welfare ,ANIMAL culture ,ANIMAL species - Abstract
Abstract: In May 2009 NaturZoo Rheine, Germany, opened a new enclosure for Sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) combined with Golden jackals (Canis aureus). Introducing the article tells the 70years long history of bear-maintenance at NaturZoo Rheine. The process of institutional collection planning resulting in Sloth bears as the taxon of choice is described as are the special ideas of modern animal-husbandry and –presentation for the concept of the facility. The enclosure and husbandry practice are detailed. A list of experiences made so far places special emphasise on behavioural enrichment and the mixed-species exhibit. Finally the visitors‘ response to the new enclosure gets mentioned. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
