Gamification techniques have long been applied by the business and marketing world to encourage explicit behaviours and increase customers’ incentive and commitment. However, in the past ten years in education, especially in language teaching and learning the benefits of this technique have also been realized as it provides an alternative to engage and motivate students in the classroom. The motivation and involvement of today’s digital generation can easily be increased by the integration of various digital tools and applications providing further opportunities for students to collaborate and communicate as well as to obtain extra scores, which can later be turned into grades or even exam grades. This methodology and pedagogy assist language teachers in finding the balance between achieving their teaching goals and meeting students’ needs. Therefore, in education today it is crucial to be resilient and flexible and be able to modify and adopt instructional methods and activities in order to meet the needs of the digital generation, and be ready to respond instantly to emergencies, or global pandemics, as it was and still is the case with COVID-19. The present paper aims to provide an insight into an international research that was carried out in the spring of 2019 involving 547 medical and healthcare students from seven European Higher Education institutions. The goal of the study was to gain some understanding of the use of gamification techniques applied in Languages for Medical and Healthcare Purposes (LMHP) classes as well as to shed light on students’ attitude towards its use. As the results suggest, gamification tools are highly applied in medical and healthcare education across Europe, and gamifying LMHP classes contributes to students’ motivation, provides them with a genuine sense of achievement and enhances their communication and collaboration skills. The authors conclude that the success of gamification lies in making the learning experience engaging and interactive, irrelevant of weather we are applying this methodology during face to face classes or online sessions due to COVID-19.

With students spending up to 20% of their in-class time texting, emailing, and checking social media, it is no wonder the problem about smartphones in the classroom arises. This article presents results of a piece of research focused on the analysis and reflection of the smartphone applications used with higher education students in order to provide, as well as to improve, their results in departmental exams while they are studying English at a professional level. The study took place over one semester of a curricular English course where smartphone applications were carefully selected and integrated into the current didactic units of the standardized institutional English program, with the purpose of finding, in the school of tourism and gastronomy, not only a solution, but a different approach to turning the problem into part of an updated methodology for the foreign language classroom. The results of this research are expected to have a significant impact on the improvement of the methodology used by teachers at all the schools on our institutional English program with the effect that, once the teachers begin to implement the systematic use of smart phone applications in the delivery of their lessons, learners will hopefully perceive the English course as more relevant and meaningful and be motivated to achieve the expected results.

Video games are popular and have the potential to keep players tied to a game for hours. This is due to certain design elements that can, for example, increase motivation. This thesis aims to answer the question of how design elements from games can be used to improve teaching in schools. To answer this question, literature was examined. Gamification is the umbrella term for the use of design elements in non-game contexts. In addition, there are also learning games that have a game context, they are then called Game-Based-Learning. There are applications that work with gamification already, which are also already used in schools. Two applications are also analysed in this thesis for their design elements. These design elements are compared with examples from video games. Kahoot! is a game that falls under the category of digital game-based learning. The main design element from this game is competition. Classcraft is a game that falls under the category of gamification. Through experience points, levels and dividing into groups, the motivation as well as the cohesion among students is strengthened. If the apps are used correctly, gamified games can increase fun, cohesion, motivation and engagement in the classroom.

Because of the rising automation and digitization, monitoring activities of production plants in control centers increases in the automotive production. The monitoring activity is mentally and psychologically demanding (Warm, Parasuraman, & Matthews, 2008). At the same time, the passive nature of the monitoring activity offers few opportunities to satisfy psychological needs, which promote the experience of joy and motivation. The usability approach does not do justice to psychological needs, as well as the problems of low stimulation, monotony and the resulting problems in monitoring performance. It is supposed that playing is fun and motivating for people, because basic psychological needs are satisfied while gaming (Ryan, Rigby, & Przybylski, 2006). This thesis made an attempt to use the motivating characteristics of game elements and to address the needs of competence, autonomy and stimulation in order to support the monitoring activity and to generate a positive user experience. The human-centered design process was followed to develop the dashboard with the game elements. An interview guide was developed on theoretical assumptions with which the context was analyzed. The qualitative content analysis according to Mayring (2015) was used for the data analysis. Based on the context analysis user requirements were derived and implemented in a design solution that emphasizes the motivating aspects of the activity and supports the value-adding activity as well. For this purpose, game elements are integrated in a dashboard of a control center. In two evaluation studies, test persons carried out a simulated, standardized monitoring task in a control center in a balanced within study design for two hours each. The conditions differed in the use of the dashboard with and without playful elements and in the number of events that occurred. The results showed that there is no significant differences found in the monitoring performance. However, the dashboard with game elements were assessed significantly more positively with regard to joy, psychological needs, psychological demands as well as the assessment of usability and user experience. Conclusions can be drawn from this that the game elements in the dashboard made the monitoring activities in the control center more attractive and increase the wellbeing of the test persons.

PROTOTYPE ,GATX ,GAMIFICATION ,GAME ,MOTIVATION ,PROTOTYP ,SPIEL - Abstract
The popularity of computer games has been unbroken since their establishment and is constantly increasing - according to ISFE (Interactive Software Federation of Europe), 54% of the European population between the ages of 6 and 64 already play computer games regularly in Europe. Game manufacturers invest millions in modern games and this effort pays off - this rapid development has long since overtaken established entertainment giants such as the film and music industry. The worldwide annual turnover of the computer games industry for the year 2019 was estimated at 71.8 billion. Of course, this development has not gone unnoticed - many branches of industry are taking advantage of this growing popularity by incorporating "playful elements" in various areas, for example to make various activities more attractive or to influence people's behavior. This method is called gamification. Whether this technique can also be used to test knowledge and subsequently lead to an increased learning effect will be investigated in this thesis. vorgelegt von: Lukasz Walczuk Wien, FH Campus Wien, Masterarb., 2020

Gamification is a relatively new term with a variety of different definitions. According to the understanding of the term underlying this thesis, gamification is the integration of game mechanics in a non-game environment, considering fun, loyalty and commitment of a player, as well as the use of game elements and game-design-techniques. In the course of this thesis, the research questions of what gamification is and whether gami-fication can increase our motivation will be answered by means of systematic preparation of appropriate literature. For the implementation of gamification systems, a basic understanding of different application-oriented subdivisions of gamification, game-design-techniques and the underlying theories is necessary. It may be helpful to gain a deeper understanding of the differences between the terms "game" and "play" and the correct use of various game elements. In many areas where gamification is already in use, a strong increase in motivation of the people involved can be observed. From this it can be concluded that gamification can have great potential when used correctly. Most implementations of gamification currently take place within the corporate context. However, gamification also has a wide range of potential application areas and can also be used sensibly in customer interaction, teaching and training. In summary, gamification can be used wherever an increase in productivity, commit-ment and motivation of people is desirable. Weiters bleibt zu zeigen, wie mithilfe der aufgezeigten psychologisch-motivatorischen Verbesserungen auch ein verbessertes Nutzerverhalten herbeigeführt werden kann., Online surveys are an essential tool for collecting data and are therefore widely used in research and marketing. One problem of most online surveys, is the amount of resulting data its quality being heavily dependent on the interest and motivation of the participants. Gamification is an approach to diminish these negative effects, by using game elements in order to motivate the participants. This work describes results of a comparative evaluation on micro and macro gamified survey designs with the purpose of analyzing the advantages and disadvantage of each design method. The micro gamified design was implemented by gamifying spatially and time-wise small elements of the survey such as interactions with text and list input fields. Interactions regarding the overall survey structure like starting, navigating and finishing the survey were part of the macro gamified design. The four different survey designs were developed in an iterative design process. Comparative evaluation results from a study with N=118 participants indicate that both micro and macro gamification can be used in order to increase the subjective motivation of the survey participants. Although, a significant change in respondent behavior could not been observed. This observation aligns with related work studying the same field. The results of the study suggest that micro and macro gamification can be recommended to be used both separately and in combination in order to improve the motivation and user experience of survey participants. Future work is needed in order to validate the benefits of micro and macro gamification on the basis of further case studies. Additional studies should investigate ways of improving user behavior by using these psychological motivational enhancements and the improved user experience.

Fortschrittsanzeige ,Open Access ,Motivation ,Abzeichen ,Gamification - Abstract

Motivation ,Trainingsplattform ,Gamification - Abstract

Die Methode bietet Designern ein strukturiertes Vorgehensmodell, Inspiration bezueglich Design-Moeglichkeiten und Entscheidungshilfe fuer Design-Entscheidungen., Response rate and residence time are critical factors for the success of online surveys. Both can be increased through improved user experience. Gamification promises better user experience by integrating playful elements. This work presents method for gamifying online surveys. At the beginning, game elements which suite to online surveys and areas in which they are used efficiently, were validated. By using the MDA-model, the collected game elements where broken down into mechanic, dynamic and aesthetic aspects. The resulting design space represents the base of the method. The application of the method is iterative and begins with the analysis phase. In this step, game elements are determined, which are integrated in the surveys. By using the MDA-model, game elements were integrated into the survey. After the completion of the gamified online survey, a summative evaluation is done by an expert with regards to survey design. In an interview, the embedding of the individual game elements and the resulting outcome will be assessed. The practical applicability of the proposed method for the gamification of online surveys is illustrated by a case study. During the iterative development process, user tests are used for evaluating the method. It offers designers a structured process model, inspiration regarding design options and decision support for design decisions.

Even though the way of driving has got a decisive impact on fuel consumption, very few driv-ers maintain a fuel-efficient driving behavior. Raising the question which aspects justify such a behavior and what steps can be taken to achieve a more efficient driving style, a causal analysis is conducted in a first step. Afterwards, the motivational conditions are presented that lead to the usage of conventional assistance systems. It is shown by which means gami-fication is influencing these conditions. Following this reasoning, a gamification concept is introduced which enriches driving with challenging tasks. The driver’s attempt to master these challenges will lead to a change in his way of driving.
