This paper gives a basic insight into the topics of metallography, sample preparation of metallographic sections, the etching process of metals for the preparation of surfaces for the analysis of the structural components of metallic materials and the microscopic analysis of these. Furthermore, the differences, advantages and disadvantages of microscopy, methods, reflected light microscopy and atomic force microscopy are elaborated and compared. The main focus was on whether the more elaborate analysis method can highlight further characteristics or properties of the materials. This does not only apply to the analysis under the microscope, but also to the preparation, the etching process and the embedding of the samples. Thus, different samples were embedded, ground, polished and etched in order to be able to discuss and compare the influences of the mechanical processes in the field of analysis. In order to better convey this to the reader, the introduction to the subject of metallography with an explanation of the procedure of the necessary steps for sample preparation and analysis as well as discussions of important terms used in the technical jargon are in the foreground at the beginning of this work. The functions of the different microscopy methods are also explained at the beginning in order to gain a better understanding of the actual question of the project. The individual steps of sample preparation up to microscopy are also described. After the introductory chapter, which serves to introduce the reader to the subject matter, the materials used are discussed and a justification is given as to why precisely the materials used were considered the most interesting. Before discussing the results of the analyses and the settings of the microscopes for the analytical procedures, the thesis also focuses on the preparation methods, in the area of separating the sample, its embedding, grinding and polishing as well as the different etching methods with the respective duration of the individual processes in order to obtain meaningful analysis results. The aim of this work is to compare the analysis methods of reflected light microscopy with those of atomic force microscopy of metallographic samples and to investigate whether the analysis by AFM can provide additional information about the conditions of the material to be analysed. The differences in sample preparation will also be explored in the course of the work in favour of the best possible analysis results. The analysis results of the samples in etched and unetched condition are compared to find out whether the etching process brings out better the structural components of the materials.
