A Vertical Art. On Poetry is a collection of essays in literary criticism by Simon Armitage, Poet Laureate of Great Britain, who based them on a series of his lectures delivered as Oxford Professor of Poetry. The framework of the book is a practice-oriented theory of poetry as a “vertical art” applied to reading a wide range of British and American authors mostly from the mid-20th century up to the present day, but reaching from time to time into the literary past. “Verticality” is a quality of poetic form that is actively engaging reader’s imagination and perception. It implies a demand for inner organization resisting the formlessness of a white page and self-restraining while choosing its own means. The result is a rhythmic pattern, both aural and visual, much unlike the “horizontalness” of extensively growing prose. The rhythmic pattern here is a broad definition covering an interplay between the lucid and the indirect, the sound and the silence, the sign and the gap on various levels. Discussing poetry in the book also involves literary institutions, in particular the contemporary Americanised model of interaction between the poet and the academia through creative writing courses. Apart from the canonical figures of American Renaissance (W. Whitman, E. Dickinson), Armitage’s perspective on American poetry includes E. Bishop, R. Lowell, A.R. Ammons, W.H. Auden, Thom Gunn, Bob Dylan, J. Wright, F. Wright, M. Donaghy, K. Young.

Abstract Objective This research aimed to identify, through an integrative literature review, the scientific production on the grieving process of those who lost loved ones due to the Coronavirus infection. Method For this purpose, methodologically, 124 articles were extracted from the BVS-Pepsic, SciELO, Lilacs, and MedLine databases in October 2021. From these, 22 articles were selected to compose the sample, which included empirical and review articles, theoretical studies, and experimental reports that specifically addressed the grief of family members over the age of 18 bereaved by COVID-19. Results As results, it was possible to observe the existence of particularities in the process of hospitalization and death due to the Coronavirus Disease, which can have an impact on the grieving process and generate mental health problems for the bereaved. Conclusion Therefore, it is concluded that the forecast of pandemic-related grief urgently requires effective strategies to identify, prevent, and treat functional impairments resulting from complications in the grieving process.

The review focuses on the book by Brian R. Roberts Borderwaters: Amid the Archipelagic States of America (2021) published in Russian translation in 2023. Roberts suggests reconsidering the US culture post-continentally by viewing it as an archipelagic nation. Dispelling the ‘continental dominance’ in American studies, Roberts explores the rich imagery of borderwaters by drawing on fiction (e. g. Mark Twain’s and Zora Neale Hurston’s works) and visual arts (Miguel Covarrubias’s representations of the Caribbean). The reviewer analyzes the role of the ‘archipelagic turn’ in American studies, as well as the specific effects of the critic’s rhetoric strategy.

The review focuses on the collective monograph Dreiser’s Path: A View with a Modern Lens (2023). The scholarly work reevaluates Dreiser's significance as a classic of American literature and offers a contemporary perspective on his legacy through the lens of modern methodologies such as critical race theory, postcolonial theory, gender theory, etc. The attention of prominent researchers in American literature and culture from Russia, the USA, Canada, and the UK is drawn to Dreiser's contradictory and hermetic view of society and its artistic projection. The monograph reevaluates Dreiser's creative legacy, considering both major and well-known works as well as minor forms. The researchers featured in the monograph highlight the reasons why certain laws operate in Dreiser's artistic world, align Dreiser's value system with the social norms prevailing during his time, typologize the components of Dreiser's texts, and theorize them using contemporary methodological tools. They also juxtapose Dreiser's texts with other artifacts of American culture and demonstrate the evolution of Dreiser's perception from the times of the USSR to the present day. The monograph was conceived in 2021 as a special tribute to Theodore Dreiser to mark his 150 anniversary.

The article analyzes the early period of Yuly Aykhenvaldʼs literary-critical activity, from 1896 to 1901. The base line of the research consists of publications in the bibliographic department of the Russkiye Vedomosti newspaper, as well as notes and articles in the Courier newspaper, the journals Herald of Education, Russkaya Mysl, Voprosy filosofii i psikhologii. The article traces the path of the critic from small notes-reviews in the Bibliography section to full-fledged articles of literary criticism. Particular attention is paid to his early experiments in the essay genre, such as the note “Fyodor Tyutchev” and the article “A Few Words in Memory of Goncharov.” These publications are compared with later essays on the same writers. Summing up the results, it can be concluded that during this period the formation of Aykhenvald as a reviewer took place and the stylistic and genre features of his critical individuality began to take shape. The article reveals that he was drawn to that type of essay, which is based on the penetration into the artistic world of the writer without taking into account the biographical and historical context. He acquired the first outlines of his literary-critical method, which he later called “immanent criticism.” Stylization and emotional quoting, combined with the interpretation of quotations, became his main techniques.

The article is a brief guide for critics that are about to write their first review of an opera. With a touch of irony, the author suggests ways of organizing the material, analyzing the director’s concepts, and the musical side of the performance (conductor, orchestra, singers).

This edited volume by Grauer and colleagues marks an update on the state of paleopathology as a field of study. The intent of this handbook is not to assist in the identification of pathological conditions and differential diagnoses, a focus already well represented in numerous other recent publications, including Ortner's Identification of Pathological Conditions in Human Skeletal Remains (Academic Press, 2019) and Paleopathology of Children: Identification of Pathological Conditions in the Human Skeletal Remains of Non-Adults (Elsevier, 2018), but rather seeks to provide broader foundational discussions around paleopathology as a discipline along with theoretical syntheses focused on topics addressed by paleopathological research. This handbook primarily engages with pathological conditions among human populations, though contributions on the fossil record (Chapter 29) and zooarchaeology (Chapter 30) are also represented.

Branko Milanovic (empleado del Banco Mundial) es uno de los mayores expertos en el estudio de las desigualdades a nivel mundial y su última contribución más relevante es el libro que comentamos ahora, y cuya primera edición de 2016 ya ha sido suficientemente reseñada en sus aspectos más positivos (Roca, 2017), por lo que nos ceñiremos aquí a los aspectos más controvertidos del mismo, en particular su alegato e impugnación del pensamiento de Marx, el revolucionario bicentenario. Se trata de un libro que ya ha visto la luz en versiones previas y formatos preliminares, tales como comunicación a congreso (I Congreso Internacional de Estudios del Desarrollo, Santander, 14-16 noviembre 2012), como documento de trabajo (Policy Research Working Paper núm. 6259, 2012, del Banco Mundial) y como un par de artículos publicados en Global Policy (vol. 3, núm. 2 de 2012 y vol. 4, núm. 2 de 2013).

El libro de Ramas es una versión sintetizada de su tesis doctoral de 2015 sobre El Capital de Marx (obra cuya primera edición de 1867 está desde 2013 en la lista de la UNESCO del “Registro de la Memoria del Mundo”), que se publica justamente en el bicentenario del economista de Tréveris, en 2018, y que se ha reeditado a finales de 2021. Y el cual ha presentado también en televisión (TVE, 2020). En este sentido, como fruto de un trabajo de investigación doctoral es sobresaliente, no hay nada que objetar. Bien documentado y estructurado y expositivamente elegante, didáctico y novedoso. En particular el libro trata sobre una aparente nueva forma de releer Das Kapital de modo complementario a las lecturas tradicionales. Y en esa complementariedad está quizá su pauta extraña, puesto que renuncia a una crítica verdadera. Utilizando la misma jerga que vertebra la obra –la teoría de la apariencia–, parece que nos encontramos (solo) ante una obra científica que (también) en realidad es más una obra de arte: una danza sobre hielo con giros y piruetas conceptuales de extrema dificultad y belleza y también con clamorosas caídas y derrapes ideológicos. Aunque no hay obra de arte que no tenga en sí misma ciencia, y aunque no sea en sí propiamente algo científico, sino artístico y así deba ser. Igual que a altas revoluciones vemos girar hacia atrás la rueda del coche, aunque vaya hacia adelante y aunque así es como hayamos de verla, al revés. Quizá por ello las revoluciones sociales parecen ir en un sentido cuando en realidad van en sentido contrario.

François Héran acaba de publicar su última obra, titulada Immigration: le grand déni, en la editorial Seuil. Conviene recordar que el actual titular de la cátedra Migraciones y Sociedades en el Colegio de Francia, es doctor en antropología por la Escuela de Altos Estudios en Ciencias Sociales y doctor de Estado por la Universidad París-Descartes. Tras cuatro años de trabajo de campo realizados en el extranjero, se incorpora al Instituto nacional de la estadística y de los estudios económicos, primero, en el seno de la sección Condición de los hogares y, posteriormente, como jefe de la sección de Encuestas y estudios demográficos que produce y analiza los indicadores demográficos en Francia (Collège de France, 2023). A lo largo de estos años, lleva a cabo une serie de encuestas nacionales sobre la sociabilidad, la formación de las parejas (con Michel Bozon); los esfuerzos educativos de las familias y la historia familiar (con Laurent Toulemon); la transmisión de las lenguas y la participación electoral (con Dominique Rouault) y la inmigración. Trata de renovar las principales fuentes sobre la evolución de las estructuras familiares y de la inmigración, como la encuesta Familia asociada al censo o la muestra demográfica permanente. Defiende “el desarrollo de la estadística sobre los orígenes de los migrantes que permitirán estudiar las trayectorias de los descendientes de migrantes, pero también las discriminaciones padecidas” (Collège de France, 2023).

Emma Wilby’s research is shedding light on one of the most outstanding records of Europe’s witchcraft prosecutions, which are the Basque (1609-14), bringing to life both the local witch-craze, in a long trail of academic writing dominated by the momentous work of Gustav Henningsen, and the eventual perspective on co-authoring the testimonials during the confession-making process, a genuinely post-1990 orientation.

La maladie associée aux IgG4 est caractérisée par une ou plusieurs atteintes d'organes pseudotumorales pouvant atteindre virtuellement tous les organes, et partageant des lésions histologiques communes. Dans cette monographie, nous proposons une revue de la littérature synthétisant les différentes atteintes d'organes possibles, les principales caractéristiques biologiques et histologiques retrouvées chez ces patients, ainsi que les critères diagnostiques et de classification à disposition des cliniciens. Un focus est également réalisé sur les exceptionnelles atteintes articulaires de la maladie ainsi que sur les rares formes secondaires/de chevauchement avec d'autres maladies systémiques. Enfin, les récentes avancées dans la compréhension physiopathologique de la maladie sont présentées, ainsi que les principales recommandations et avis d'experts concernant la prise en charge thérapeutique de ces patients. IgG4-related (IgG4-RD) disease is a rare multi-organ fibro-inflammatory condition characterized by mass lesions and strictures, that can affect virtually all organs with characteristic histological lesions. In this review, we purpose an overview of the different organ involvements, biological and histological characteristics of the patients, as well as a literature review on diagnostic and classification criteria available for physicians. A specific focus on anecdotal IgG4-related arthritis/synovitis and rare "secondary" IgG4-RD associated with other systemic immune-mediated conditions is also purposed for rheumatologists. Finally, recent advances on pathophysiology are presented, as well as main expert consensus and recommendations on IgG4-RD management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is an overview and presentation of the fundamental and major ideas of François-Régis Mahieu’s book “New Economic Anthropology”, published by the prestigious editor” Routledge“, which is an important and original work. It offers a different perspective from what we are accustomed to in the field of economic anthropology. The author examines the tension between anthropology and economics, as well as the ideas of “freedom”, “person”, and “responsibility”, with a positive outlook.

The review gives a general description of T.I. Dronova’s monograph “D.S. Merezhkovsky’s Historiosophical Novel in the Perspective of the 20th Century,” published in 2021 by the Saratov University Publishing House. The analysis of the book structure reveals the original concept of the historiosophical novel, which is presented by the author. The postulates of the research are based on theoretical studies and results of the genesis and genre novelty’s study of the historiosophical novel of the writer-thinker, as well as on the serious methodological basis and fundamental historical and literary works. The author of the monograph appeals to the controversial issues of the genre in modern literary studies and identifies the dominant and meaningful content of the concept “historiosophical novel.” The problem gets a practical solution in the analytical chapters. The transfer of the attention from the religious and philosophical concept of the writer-thinker to the cognitional method of history and the analysis of poetics prioritizes in further. It is declared that the attitude to history as a text leads D.S. Merezhkovsky to the aestheticization of the Past. The paradoxical nature of genre synthesis in the historiosophical novel, which T.I. Dronova brought out due to the conjugation of concrete historical and metahistorical narrative plans, has a deep impression. The monograph convincingly reveals the features of the artistic embodiment of the author’s historiosophical concept in the trilogy Christ and the Antichrist, as D.S. Merezhkovsky leads the reader outside the concrete historical epoch to metahistorical conflicts. The question of the nature of artistic historicism in the trilogy The Kingdom of the Beast is actualized, the author analyses the importance of the “historicity of narrative” problem for the Writer. A large section of the monograph about the nature of connections in the prose of the 1920–1930s (A. Platonov, M. Bulgakov, M. Aldanov) with D. Merezhkovsky’s works is also of interest.

Background: Palliative care (PC) is a priority in South Africa, focussing on integrating PC into primary health care. Few examples exist showing how this is done. In 2018, a rural PC project was implemented, which subsequently evolved into an integrated service between the hospital and the community. Aim: The aim was to review the PC project over 4 years. Setting: The setting was the George subdistrict of the Garden Route district in South Africa. Community-based services were offered to all patients with PC needs by three non-governmental organisations who deliver home community-based care via community health workers. They were supplemented by primary health care clinics, an intermediate care facility and two hospitals. Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study. Inpatient ward round data and patient referrals between 2018 and 2022 were analysed using descriptive statistics. Variables included patient demographics, diagnosis, home visits and place of death. Results: A total of 819 patients were referred. Inpatients were reviewed on weekly ward rounds by a multidisciplinary team. The most common diagnosis was cancer (57%). Home visits enabled patient follow-ups, of which 152 were recorded. Conclusion: The programme has become sustainable and integrated in the public healthcare system. Contributing factors included dedicated staff, using simple tools and continuous training. The findings may be useful to PC programmes in similar contexts elsewhere. Contribution: This work adds new knowledge to the field of PC in an underresourced rural healthcare environment in sub-Saharan Africa, by describing how system-wide integration of a new service was navigated to become sustainable.

This article asks a relatively naïve question: how can we build a coherent corpus of video game critics to analyze their formal components? We first present some journalistic texts related to Super Castlevania IV (in printed specialized press and websites). The variety of texts we encountered on this game showcases the identification problem relative to video game criticism. To help us circumscribe video game criticism (in regard to the other journalistic texts), we did a review of academic texts. More specifically, we selected articles and books that study video game reviews, tests, or critics. After this review, we suggest a model which could help us define the frontiers of critics.

The review focuses on the book Becoming T.S. Eliot: The Rhetoric of Voice and Audience in “Inventions of the March Hare”, 2021, written by Jayme Stayer, the American researcher of modernist poetry and T.S. Eliot’s work. Stayer uses rhetorical approach for studying poems from Eliot's notebook, refers to the concepts of ethos, logos and pathos, and analyzes the forms of existence of Eliot's lyrical voice, the development of his own poetic language, his interaction with real and imaginary audiences. The review briefly outlines the milestones of Eliot’s way as a poet from 1899 to 1915. Special attention is paid to the poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”. The author of the review examines the composition of the publication, consisting of eight chapters, notes the main theses of Stayer’s book.

Introduction: Acute rhinosinusitis (ASR) is a frequent pathology in everyday practice. However, there are few epidemiological data on the frontal localization of this infection. French recommendations recommend systematic treatment of acute frontal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) in adults with amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, unlike the maxillary location where antibiotic therapy (ATB) is not systematically recommended. Due to the low incidence of complications and the problem of antibiotic resistance, should ASR be treated differently depending on its location? Method: Literature review of randomized trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses on antibiotic therapy for uncomplicated AFSR in adults. Results: No RCTs or meta-analyses in adults with uncomplicated AFSR were identified. An analysis of RCTs included in a Cochrane meta-analysis identified 5 RCTs that included RSFA. Four of his RCTs showed no significant difference between antibiotic treatment and placebo. Conclusion: A Cochrane meta-analysis concluded that there was no place for ATB in the treatment of uncomplicated RSA due to the low incidence of complications and resistance to antibiotics. It is therefore not legitimate to treat all patients with AFSR as recommended in the French recommendations. It is more relevant to decide on the clinical signs of severity of the patient, rather than on the location of the RSA to choose the appropriate treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Snow is an important driver of ecosystem processes in cold biomes. Snow accumulation determines ground temperature, light conditions, and moisture availability during winter. It also affects the growing season’s start and end, and plant access to moisture and nutrients. Here, we review the current knowledge of the snow cover’s role for vegetation, plant-animal interactions, permafrost conditions, microbial processes, and biogeochemical cycling. We also compare studies of natural snow gradients with snow experimental manipulation studies to assess time scale difference of these approaches. The number of tundra snow studies has increased considerably in recent years, yet we still lack a comprehensive overview of how altered snow conditions will affect these ecosystems. Specifically, we found a mismatch in the timing of snowmelt when comparing studies of natural snow gradients with snow manipulations. We found that snowmelt timing achieved by snow addition and snow removal manipulations (average 7.9 days advance and 5.5 days delay, respectively) were substantially lower than the temporal variation over natural spatial gradients within a given year (mean range 56 days) or among years (mean range 32 days). Differences between snow study approaches need to be accounted for when projecting snow dynamics and their impact on ecosystems in future climates.

Context and background: Wheat is one of the oldest crops in the world and has always been one of the most important staple foods for millions of people around the world, especially in North Africa, where wheat is the most dominant crop. The importance of wheat yield estimation is well known in agricultural management and policy making at regional and national levels. In semi-arid areas such as the case of Morocco, an operational cereal yield estimating system that could assist decision makers in planning annual imports is needed. In some developed countries, several effective tools are now available to monitor crops and optimize farm-level decisions by combining crop simulation models with seasonal forecasts. However, few tools are used to effectively manage crops at the farm level to cope with climate variability and risk. Goal and objectives: The following article presents an overview of current methods used for wheat yield estimation in the world and in Morocco Methodology: Various sections describing traditional methods, simulation models, and remote sensing. Then a section is devoted to the estimation methods used in Morocco and their efficiencies. Results: This article is very useful for researchers working on this subject because it brings together all the methods of estimating wheat yields worldwide and classifies them into categories and then situates Morocco, which is a relevant example of a North African country that is a leader in the use of spatial techniques and in the monitoring of crops, and wheat in particular.

A television series is a dynamic object, likely to undergo multiple evolutions between the beginning and the end of its broadcast. Each season, each episode, each scene, even each shot, can shed new light on a series as a whole – and, in the most extreme cases, call into question its interest as such in the eyes of viewers and critics. Yet the re-evaluation of yesterday’s successes seems to be accelerating under the influence of an overabundant production and a simultaneous expression of opinion between professionals and amateurs. This study aims to put into perspective the different criteria selected (more or less consciously) by American critics to establish that a series has “tipped” over to the other side, after having been dubbed and covered with praise.

Oxford University Press’ The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde (2000-) and The Collected Works of Walter Pater (2019-), are the result of a series of personal and editorial engagements spanning two centuries.From Walter Pater's Essays from ‘The Guardian’, which appeared in a private edition in 1897, to the two volumes of his journalism announced for 2023, including the two volumes of Oscar Wilde's journalistic writings published in 2013, publishers have always been interested in the periodical writings of Pater and Wilde. While the former’s reviews were published at the turn of the century, the latter’s extensive journalistic writings were quickly published in a (near) complete edition by a trio of committed editors in 1908. This commitment contrasts with the reticence of Pater’s editors, as this article aims to show by paying attention to the various editions of their reviews since the turn of the 20th century.

In the context of a growing demand from citizens to be involved in decisions concerning the land use planning, there is a need to modernize the processes of participation, in particular through the development of digital practices. Audiovisual media is a desired approach and this article proposes to study its uses as well as its potential contributions to geography and planning. To this end, various audiovisual productions by geographers, as well as articles presenting them, have been studied. The degree of scientificity and creativity that the films must include raises questions about their legitimacy. Nevertheless, they seem to be an effective means of proposing a detailed analysis of the territory and of what citizens have to say. They bring new points of view to the spectator by allowing them to take a position. However, the use of films in land use planning would seem to be conditioned by the fact that their trajectory must be more closely correlated to that of the territory, which is generally filmed at a given moment, i.e. before and/or after transformation/processing, which does not allow citizens to participate in all stages of the land use planning.
