A suspension bridge and a cable-stayed bridge are compared under various loads and environmental conditions in this study. Under live, dead, and seismic loads, the research investigates axial forces, displacements, bending moments, and shear forces using advanced analytical methods and software such as CsiBridge, SAP2000, and Staad Pro. Steel plays a key role in the construction of suspension bridges and cable-stayed bridges, as this study thoroughly compares both types of bridges. Csi Bridge software is utilized in this study to investigate the axial force, displacement, bending moment, and shear strength of these bridges under various loading conditions. Cable-stayed bridges are recognized for their aesthetic benefits and structural efficiency for medium-to-long spans, and suspension bridges for their high tensile strength and durable design. The two bridge types exhibit different shear forces, displacements, and torsional values, underscoring their unique engineering designs.

Arches were formed from stone or wood, then they became constructed of metal and reinforced concrete with regular or pre-stressed reinforcement.With the passage of time, methods of building bridges became increasingly sophisticated, and the nature of bridges changed from purely functional goals to fully designed structures that include technological and aesthetic aspects, so the development of the materials used had a great impact on the design of bridges in terms of size and shape, and with advancement and technological development and the discovery of technological techniques And advanced engineering, fast and new building materials, and based on scientific discoveries of construction materials and methods, bridges have become in our modern era changing and developing with electronic technology and the information revolution, modern technology and advanced systems used now in bridges, taking into account the environmental factor and its techniques, so the environment had a great impact on the design elements, which necessitated With him reconsidering the designs of bridges using the maximum benefit of the surrounding environment and exploiting its effect on the design through the architectural formation, which is the result of several related factors that differ from one period of time to another and from one place to another with the difference in the influencing environment, whether it is a site or climate, and glass was an important element in the materials used in these bridges. Therefore, the aim of the research is to study the most important types of glass that can be used in designing a Jusoor and implement them in accordance with the surrounding environment, to give strength and safety to this bridge while controlling the absorption and reflection of light rays.

Geosynthetic structures are widely used to prevent destructive anti-erosion, anti-landslide processes in transportation construction. The purpose of this work is to develop a transport structural protective layer with high strength characteristics and the preservation of drainage and anti-erosion properties due to the formation of a flexible volume membrane structure. This structure can also be utilized as a crushed stone layer of a multilayer structure for construction of a transportation section with variable stiffness. The protective layer is formed by adding a polymer binder into the composition of a structural layer, consisting of grain elements. The produced geocomposite is made of layers with different functional properties that ensure its high homogeneous properties in porosity, strength, density, drainage and anti-erosion capacity, self-cleaning tendency, and long service life.

By interpreting the bridge as a relational metaphor, and reflecting an inter-relational ‘space between’ of positions, the paper contributes to a different view of integrating pluralism in organization studies. Following an embodied realism, first bridges and bridging are presented as phenomena, media and metaphors for connecting and separating. Showing their ambivalent character the role of bridges as metaphors and metaphors as bridges are discussed in relation to organisation studies and as transition zones for paradigms. Based on an integrative orientation, mediating qualities of bridges and bridging are outlined for gaining a decentered, but interconnected understanding of organising. The final part discusses some implications for organization studies.

Infrastructure is an indispensable and decisive requirement for the economic development of a country; it is directly linked to the set of structural economic activities and serves as the foundation for the development of other activities. In this context, the bridges have fundamental importance to the social and economical development of the cities, because the roads are to ensure the entry of inputs on farms, as well as the disposal of products and free movement of populations. The aim of this study is to present a survey of the existing bridges in the south region of Brazil, more specifically in the city of Pato Branco, identifying the most recurrent damages, in order to provide bases to administrators, with the intention of ensuring the correct functioning of the transport infrastructure and in the preservation of public property and security for the users. Data collection was conducted through visits, using the method of visual and photographic records. After the analysis was done, we identified several pathological manifestations, both in concrete and wood bridges, such as moisture stains, cracks, corrosion, erosion, clogging of drains; wood decay, lack of verticality of the pillars and foundation repression, among others. Moreover, there was little or no maintenance on the existing bridges. Similar conditions can be observed in most cities in the south region of the country.

The city of the Convenae, which succeeded the populations displaced by Pompey at the opening of Garonne valley onto the plain served as an anchorage in the Augustean reshaping of the lands in southern Aquitania. The military ventures of the Ist c. B.C. and the building of the cities and provinces, at the turn of our era, endowed it with a network of big arterial roads. The two northsouth roads which reached Lugdunum from Tolosa and Aginnum went on through the Val d’Aran towards Ilerda, following the valley of the Noguera Pallaresa. Although there is no mention of that layout in the antique Itineraries, epigraphic and archeological data make its existence obvious. The building of that network along that of the by-ways that was to complete it was a matter of time as a fair number of ground observations illustrate it.

15. Modeling of information on the impact of mining exploitation on bridge objects in BIM

The article discusses the advantages of BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology in the management of bridge infrastructure on mining areas. The article shows the problems with information flow in the case of bridge objects located on mining areas and the advantages of proper information management, e.g. the possibility of automatic monitoring of structures, improvement of safety, optimization of maintenance activities, cost reduction of damage removal and preventive actions, improvement of atmosphere for mining exploitation, improvement of the relationship between the manager of the bridge and the mine. Traditional model of managing bridge objects on mining areas has many disadvantages, which are discussed in this article. These disadvantages include among others: duplication of information about the object, lack of correlation in investments due to lack of information flow between bridge manager and mine, limited assessment possibilities of damage propagation on technical condition and construction resistance to mining influences.

Many bridges built in the ancient Rome have survived to the present time. In this presentation, the author does not focus his attention on the architectural, archaeological, construction or statistical aspects. He discusses, above all, the legal regulations concerning the bridges in the Justinian's legislation. He is looking for an answer to the question of who in the ancient times at the Romans’ supervised the bridges. He wonders if the curatores pontis existed? It touches on the question of building a "private" bridge, the correlation of bridge issues and servitude, the bridge versus assassination, the bridge versus a suicide or the bridge versus taxes paid by the Church. The Romans did not produce a comprehensive legal doctrine related to bridges. They treated roads or aqueducts much more precisely. Although the Justinian's legislation was treated marginally and incidentally about the bridges, and the current legislation on bridges is richer, dealing with, for example, in the Polish law the movement of the wild animals through them, so still the durability of the Roman bridges can be impressive.

Malgré l'absence de mention de ce tracé dans les Itineraires antiques, des données épigraphiques et archéologiques en rendent l'existence évidente. New technologies based on seismic isolation are gaining popularity among engineers given the savings on construction costs. The long-term advantage of these technologies preserve the serviceability of the structure after an earthquake and eliminate the cost of reconstruction. This advantage is critical for 'emergency' bridges, required to remain operational after an earthquake. The present article examines a method of isolating the foundation of existing bridges as part of a seismic retrofitting effort. This approach is supported by the increasing interest in this method, especially since its adoption by the Canadian standards and due to the fact that engineers are not too familiar with non-linear dynamic design methods. Another source of motivation is the opportunity to apply this technique to the refection of a few Quebec bridges. The steps of the antiseismic calculations as well as the results of non-linear analyses pertaining to the Madrid Bridge are presented and discussed. This paper may become a useful tool for engineers and their projects of retrofitting existing bridges. Les nouvelles technologies basées sur l'isolation sismique connaissent un intérêt grandissant parmi les ingénieurs, compte tenu de l'économie sur le coût de la construction de l'ouvrage qu'elles offrent. Elles présentent également un avantage indéniable à long terme étant donné qu'elles préservent la fonctionnalité de l'ouvrage après séisme et éliminent le coût de reconstruction. Cet avantage revêt une importance capitale pour les ponts dits de secours qui doivent demeurer en service après le séisme. Cet article présente une méthodologie relative à l'isolation de la base des ponts existants dans un contexte de mise en conformité sismique. Cette démarche est motivée par l'intérêt grandissant de cette méthode, notamment depuis son adoption par la norme canadienne d'une part et d'autre part par le fait que les ingénieurs praticiens sont moins familiers avec les méthodes dynamiques non linéaires de conception. L'opportunité offerte aux auteurs de mettre en application cette technique pour la réfection de quelques ponts au Québec est une autre source de motivation. Les étapes de calcul parasismiques sont pourvues, et les résultats des analyses non linéaires relatives au pont Madrid sont présentés et discutés. Cables currently used in civil engineering, including cable-stayed bridges or suspension bridges, are made of cylindrical steel wires with a diameter between 3 and 7 mm. They are unalloyed or low alloyed steel whose composition is near eutectoid and are obtained by cold drawing. They have a high resistance in traction (more than 1900 MPa) and a low ductility. By their constitution, cables have high tensile strength and low bending stiffness. However, the studies conducted in recent years have shown that the main causes of cables deterioration are due to corrosion and to inter-wires frictions induced by fatigue. These cables degradation mechanisms are described in this paper. Different methods of protecting civil engineering cables were originally developed against corrosion, such as metal coatings (galvanization, galfanization), and lubrication. These protections can also have effects on fatigue. The experimental and numerical results obtained from single wires and presented in this paper, show obviously the beneficial effect of galvanizing and lubrication in terms of fretting fatigue lifetime. However, the mechanisms of degradation due to fretting fatigue in the presence of corrosion are not fully known and are currently the subject of a thorough study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Vervaat [Ann. Probab. 7 (1979) 141–149] has established a path transformation which gives a correspondence between the bridge and the excursion of a Brownian motion. Chaumont [Bull. Sci. Math. 123 (1997) 377–403] has partly extended this correspondence to the stable case and Miermont [Electron. J. Probab. 6 (14) (2001) 33] to the spectrally positive case. Using the “General Theory of Processes”, we show easily the Vervaat correspondence for Lévy processes under the hypothesis of absolute continuity of the resolvent (which is called the ACC hypothesis of Silverstein). Before establishing this correspondence, we give the appropriate definition of the bridge and the excursion for these processes by using potential theory. More precisely, we show that they are elementary transformations of two “Kuznetsov measures”. We present this paper, in its content as well as in its spirit, as a tribute to the work of Paul-André Meyer. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The study presented in this paper is part of a project aiming at evaluating the potential use of aluminum in structures. The types of intervention could range from a simple repair or a reinforcement involving structural aluminum, the replacement of a used bridge deck by an aluminum deck, to the construction of a new bridge made in full or in part of aluminum. It is this latter type of intervention that justified a research project, the results of which are presented in this article. The first step involves identifying the most advantageous type of aluminum structural system from a structural standpoint as well as an economic standpoint. This step includes the analysis and partial design of 40 girder- or truss-type road bridges, spanning 15 and 35 m, supporting either an active concrete slab or an aluminum deck. These studies have shown that bridges built using a Pratt-type truss and an active concrete slab provided the best results. It is also shown that some calculation criteria, such as vibration, deflection, and fatigue criteria limited the extensive use of aluminum in bridges. In the second step, nine bridges are more comprehensively analysed and designed, based on the standards used in North America, and three are fully designed, including the connexions, in order to realize a cost analysis study that is as accurate as possible. Special attention is given to vibration and fatigue problems as well as to the details related to connexions calculation. The study concludes that the development of an aluminum-only medium span road bridge system is a non-viable project in the short to mid term from a structural standpoint as well as an economic standpoint, and it makes recommendations on the use of aluminum decks and on the continuation of the work.Key words: aluminum, analysis, bridges, connexions, design, fatigue, standards, vibration.[Journal translation]L'étude présentée dans cet article s'inscrit dans le cadre d'un projet visant à évaluer le potentiel d'utilisation de l'aluminium dans les ouvrages d'art. Le type d'intervention peut être une simple réparation ou un renforcement impliquant de l'aluminium structural, le remplacement d'un tablier de pont usagé par un tablier en aluminium ou, encore, la construction d'un nouveau pont entièrement ou en grande partie en aluminium. C'est ce dernier type d'intervention qui a justifié le projet de recherche dont les résultats font l'objet de cette présentation. Une première étape vise à identifier le type de système structural en aluminium le plus avantageux, tant du point de vue structural que du point de vue économique. Cette étape comprend l'analyse et le dimensionnement partiel de 40 ponts routiers de types poutres pleines ou à treillis, de 15 et 35 m de portée et supportant soit une dalle de béton participante, soit un tablier en aluminium. Ces travaux ont démontré que les ponts ayant des poutres triangulées de type Pratt et une dalle participante en béton armé présentent les meilleurs résultats. Il en ressort aussi que certains critères de calcul, tels les critères de vibration, de flèche et de fatigue limitent grandement l'utilisation de l'aluminium dans les ponts. Dans une deuxième étape, neuf ponts sont analysés et dimensionnés plus finement sur la base des normes en vigueur en Amérique du Nord et trois sont dimensionnés au complet, y compris les assemblages, dans le but de réaliser une étude comparative des coûts la plus précise possible. Une attention spéciale est portée aux problèmes de vibration et de fatigue ainsi qu'aux particularités du calcul des assemblages. L'étude conclut que le développement d'un système de pont routier entièrement en aluminium, de moyenne portée, est un projet non viable à court ou à moyen terme, tant du point de vue structural que du point de vue économique et fait des recommandations sur l'utilisation des tabliers en aluminium ainsi que sur la poursuite des travaux.Mots clés : aluminium, analyse, assemblages, dimensionnement, fatigue, normes, ponts, vibration. Ce phénomène est accentué par la présence d'obstacles à l'écoulement, tels que les piles et culées de ponts, ou également les quais, les éoliennes et les oléoducs offshores dans un contexte maritime. La présence de fosses d'affouillement engendre une perte de la capacité portante de la structure et menace sa stabilité. Face à ce risque hydraulique, il est crucial de suivre en continu l'évolution de la profondeur d'affouillement au droit des ouvrages d'art et d'évaluer sa conséquence sur le comportement de la structure. Cette thèse est une contribution à l'utilisation de l'analyse vibratoire pour le suivi de l'affouillement, et à la compréhension des phénomènes d'interaction sol-structure mis en jeu. La démarche scientifique retenue intègre deux approches distinctes du suivi d'affouillement : indirecte et directe. L'approche indirecte a pour objectif le développement d'un capteur de profondeur d'affouillement (scour depth sensor SDS). Des études expérimentale et numérique ont été menées afin d'évaluer l'influence de l'affouillement, d'une part sur la réponse dynamique du capteur (fréquences, déformées modales et amortissement), d'autre part sur sa réponse statique sous chargement latéral. Sur la base des résultats obtenus, un modèle théorique de poutre équivalente a été proposé afin de lier la variation de la fréquence du capteur à la profondeur d'affouillement. L'approche directe s'intéresse à l'effet de l'affouillement sur la réponse dynamique de la structure elle-même. Des campagnes d'essais ont été menées sur des modèles réduits en canal hydraulique. Un intérêt particulier a été porté aux effets de la géométrie de la pile et de l'interaction pile-tablier. Un modèle analytique a été proposé pour prédire l'évolution de la fréquence des piles avec l'affouillement. Tiber Island, between Vrbs and Trastevere, is one of the topographical characteristic of the site ofRome. Its history and fame begun with the arrival of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine brought fromEpidauros. No study went thoroughly back over the history and topography of this significant component ofroman scenery since the monograph written by M. Besnier in the early years of the 20th century. Nowadayscurrent developments in archeological research and new perspectives in roman topography throw new light onmany issues. This thesis aims to go back over the development, the town-planning but also the place the Tiberislet occupied in town. In this perspective, this is not just about grasping the island as a place but also as acomponent of roman landscape and urban development. Indeed Tiber island can only be apprehended at firstwithin its natural surroundings then its urban one. The island shows a high concentration of cults, which begunwith the advent of Aesculapius, who made it the “sacred island” thus permanently marking its topography.However, studying its planning and administration reveals it was real district too, with all the features as regardsarrangements and activities. At first on the fringe of the city, its integration to the city begun in the 2nd centuryBC until it was established as uicus Censori by the augustean reform. During the Imperial period, the island isalready seen as an old-settled part of the city, which will only know new changes with the banning ofpolytheistic cult.; L'île tibérine est l'île fluviale se trouvant sur le Tibre, à hauteur de Rome. sa première occupation connue remonte au iiie siècle av. j.-c., lors de l'installation d'un culte en l'honneur d'Esculape. Ll'île est également au centre d'un noeud de communication entre les deux rives du fleuve. L'objectif du travail sera d'étudier la place de l'île dans la ville de Rome, de retracer son évolution, déterminer ses fonctions ainsi que ses liens et interractions avec les quartiers mitoyens : le trastevere ou le forum boarium, par exemple. L'étude s'ouvrira donc aux ponts de Rome et à certaines zones riveraines de l'île.l'étude sera réalisée en reprennant les textes des historiens et géographes antiques, les inscriptions, les vestiges archéologiques et les récits des voyageurs modernes. Cette disposition topographique de Rome, au bord d'un fleuve, à proximité d'un îlot central, se retrouve dans d'autres villes antiques. Il sera intéressant, après avoir développé l'étude de l'île, de comparer la situation avec celle d'autres villes qui présentent les mêmes caractéristiques, comme Paris ou Antioche par exemple; L’isola Tiberina, tra l’Vrbs e il Trastevere, costitui una delle particolarità topograficedel sito di Roma. La sua storia, ma supratutto la sua notorietà, comincia quando arriveEsculapio, il dio greco della medicina, importato da Epidauro. Dalla monografia di M.Besnier, pubblicata all’inizio del XX secolo, nessuna studia è tronata su questo soggetto inmodo approfondito. Ora, l’attualità della ricerca archeologica e le nuovi approci in topografiaromana getteno nuova luce su molte problematice. Duncque, questo lavoro propone diriesaminare l’evoluzione, gli insediamenti ma anche il ruolo dell’isola nella città. Inquest’ottica, non si considera solo l’isola in quanto luogo ma come elemento del paesaggio etdel urbanismo romani. Perché si posse capire l’isola Tiberina unicamente nel suo ambiante,innazi tutto naturale, poi urbano. L’isola si define soprattuto per la concentrazione di culti sulsuo territorio, iniziata dall’arrivo di Esculapio che l’insedia nel suo ruolo d’ « isola sacra » emarca definitavamente la sua topografia. Tuttavia, la studia del suo spazio et della suaamministrazione mostra che era anche un vero quartiere, di cui aveva tutti gli attributi inmateria di strutture ed attività. Inizialmente fuori dalla città, la sua intergrazione nelfunzionamento della città comincia dal II secolo a.C. fino alla riforma di Auguto che laistituisce uicus Censori. As part of this project, the research activities consisted in mapping the various hazards, developing research on the impacts of some of them, improving investigative techniques and contributing to the implementation of changes taking into account the hazards in the act of building.

Elle suppose de savoir evaluer de maniere suffisamment precise, la duree de vie residuelle d’un pont metallique existant, en tenant compte de son histoire (trafic supporte, materiau, reparation eventuelle, etc) et en raffinant les methodes de calcul appliquees.

Le projet d’un ouvrage d’art comprend, avant tout, l’analyse du site, car celui-ci sera l’un des facteurs qui imposeront les premières contraintes lors de la conception et du choix de la structure retenue. Ce n’est pas le coût qui doit devenir le seul critère de décision, moins encore dans ce projet, mais le choix d’une structure élégante et avec une certaine qualité esthétique qui vienne se poser sur un site pour entamer un dialogue et le valoriser ; il ne s’agit en aucun cas d’imposer une structure médiocre ou trop spectaculaire sur un site quelconque en le détruisant. Élégance et légèreté sont les mots qui doivent nous guider tout au long du projet.

We have already had occasion to talk about the ‘transborder bridge' projected between Basse-Indre and Indret, but who remained virtual. In the present document, after a brief reminder about this particular kind of bridges carried out by the French engineer François Arnodin, we will discuss specifically the project of a fixed link between two banks of the River Loire, downstream from Nantes. The chosen site served at that time by trays, is would be lent very usefully to the construction of a ‘transborder bridge', as long as the number of passengers could be estimated to be approximately 200 persons, four times per day. On the one hand, people in large number went daily from Indre to Indret, to work in the establishment of the Navy. On the other hand, a similar number of employees residing in common close to the South of the River Loire, were employed in the ironwork of Basse-Indre. These alternating migrations, adding to transport of goods, would certainly had justify on an economical point of view such an investment by the General Council. But nothing was done in fact, by postponing any decision making during more than ten years on this project, who was finally canceled. Technically, the project had been completed in all its aspects, so that it would be possible, from the complete set of documents that remain, to produce at least a numeric and dynamic model, which, by nature, could be used for different purposes. We know that the question of a fixed link between the two shores of the River Loire, downstream from Nantes, is on the agenda. Our aim in this study is to provide historical items that could be useful for future discussions on that matter. Introduction; Nous avons déjà eu l'occasion d'évoquer le pont à transbordeur projeté par l'ingénieur français François Arnodin, entre Basse-Indre et Indret, mais resté virtuel . Dans le présent document, après avoir fait un bref rappel des ponts à transbordeur réalisés par Arnodin, nous traiterons spécifiquement d'un projet de liaison fixe entre les deux rives de la Loire, en aval de Nantes. Le site choisi, desservi à l'époque par des bacs, se serait prêté très utilement à la construction d'un pont à transbordeur, dès lors que le nombre de passagers pouvait être estimé à environ 200 personnes, quatre fois par jour. D'une part des ouvriers en grand nombre se rendaient d'Indre à Indret pour y travailler dans l'établissement de la marine nationale. D'autre part, inversement, un nombre équivalent de salariés résidant dans les communes proches, au sud de la Loire, avaient un emploi dans la forge à l'anglaise de Basse-Indre, rive droite. Ces migrations alternées, s'ajoutant à des transports de marchandises, auraient certainement justifié sur le plan économique un tel investissement par le Conseil général. Il n'en a rien été, après qu'une décision sur ce projet ait été reportée régulièrement, pendant plus de dix ans, et finalement abandonnée. Sur le plan technique, le projet avait été mené à bien sous tous ses aspects, au point qu'il serait possible, à partir des documents qui subsistent, de produire à tout le moins une numérisation dynamique, laquelle, par nature, pourrait être utilisée à différentes fins en de multiples endroits. On sait que la question d'un lien fixe entre les deux rives de la Loire, en aval de Nantes, est encore à l'ordre du jour. Notre propos dans cette étude est de mettre à la disposition des acteurs intéressés par ce problème des éléments historiques susceptibles de leur être utiles.

Alexandre Sarrasin (1895-1976) studied at Zürich Federal Swiss Institute of Technology (ETH) from 1913 to 1918. Despite First World War's conflicts surrounding the neutral Switzerland, the intellectual climate inside ETH was cosmopolitan and liberal. As unique educational institution directly depending from the Federal government, the ETH played an important role in shaping modern Switzerland where country planning and infrastructure building were the central power's main tasks. Engineers were important figures of this process of modernization. They embodied the values of the industrial revolution: rationality, efficiency and the huge power of transformation of the country and its society. Sarrasin opened an engineer's office in Lausanne in 1921 and in Brussell two years later. He established himself in the capital of Belgium in 1927 while ruling at the same time his office in Lausanne. He came back to Switzerland when the German army invaded Belgium. The office in Bruxells was maintained up to the early 1960's. Branches were opened in Sion and Geneva during the 1950's. Sarrasin's work concerned foundations, buildings, bridges and some dams also. Nearly all these constructions works were made of reinforced concrete, his favorite material. This thesis is dedicated to the construction works, especially the bridges in Valais, Sarrasin's native district, and the aesthetic question in engineer's design. Of the bridge of Branson (1924- 1925) near Fully, his first important commission, he wrote that "The elegance of the design is due to its simplicity. The quietness of its lines is fully harmonized with the landscape. Nothing was planned for the decoration. The bridge is the simple realization of a mathematical truth". This quotation highlights the issue of form for engineers and especially in Sarrasin's works: the affirmation of simplicity and "mathematical truth", that is to say the expression of the structural mechanics, as the engineer's aesthetic's fundamental the relation with the landscape The question of form was not only thought of in terms of efficiency and economy, or lack of decoration. The development of structural mechanics as engineer's science gave new conceptual tools allowing new designs. The first professor of civil engineering at the ETH, Karl Culmann (1821-1881), was the graphical static's father. This applied science was inspired by descriptive geometry and graphical calculation methods developed in France during the 18th and 19th century. To the construction's classical point of view distinguishing between elements bearing weight (for example pillars) and others being supported (for example lintels), graphical static opposed a spatial vision of forces interactions into the structure. New materials allowed bringing these forces into play with tensed cables, compressed or extended frames. At the beginning of the 20th century, reinforced concrete appeared as modern material along side with iron and steel. Created by builders in the 19th century, its construction method was investigated by engineers making it a universal material used by everyone, independent of patents. This assimilation was made by elaborating construction norms that had sometimes inhibitive effects on the creativity of engineers. Other engineer looked for new forms fitting the material's caracteristics. Robert Maillart (1872-1940) was one of them. He had a great influence on Sarrasin's work. The first half-century of modern engineers which started with the creation of the ETH in 1855, was a period of great innovations in science and technology. Most construction works were made of metal and were built for the railways and designed with the graphical static, creating a new architecture, but the question of aesthetic became an issue only at the beginning of the 20th century. The first reaction rose against the overwhelming presence of technology in surroundings : its impact on the landscape or on the city's image was depicted as negative. At the same time, other observers – architects, art historians – recognized in industrial constructions an aesthetical value. Some engineers wanted a come back to traditional forms as stone vaults. During the first quarter of century, several metallic bridges had been considered as fragile and replaced by stone works. Bridges were designed as monuments. On the other side, some engineers argued for the beauty of modern materials and technology, opposed to the picturesque point of view, represented by those who wanted preserving the landscape. The First World War was not only the beginning of the 20th century. It seemed also to be the moment where engineers lost their innocence. Aesthetical questions and the impact on the landscape were matters of public debates. During the same period engineering became a profession free of contractors. That had probably the effect that engineers developed their own language. Sarrasin exactly spent his study years during this period of changes. Matters of aesthetic belonged to the themes treated by his professor of structural mechanics, Arthur Rohn (1878- 1956), who considered that a bridge should not only be built rationally, but should also express his structural system. François Schüle (1860-1925), who was involved in developing constructive norms for reinforced concrete, was his professor of material's technology. He represented the scientific side of the profession of engineer. The works of Sarrasin embodied this double requirement for rationality in using materials and the will to integrate the construction works into the landscape and into the environmental context. Valais was the landscape taken into account. This mountainous district entailed contradictory representations of the need of modernization and the preservation of landscape and traditions. On one side, this region was shown as a society preserved from modernity with unchanged traditions, on the other side, the Valais quickly took part in the national economy. The landscape changed deeply with the draining of the main valley of the Rhône river, the construction of rail and road nets, industry and hydroelectric plants. Sarrasin's works were the products of this economic revolution which transformed the Valais region; they wanted at the same time to be a testimony of this story. One of the interesting aspects of the attitude of this engineer is the way he used references to ancient constructions. Beamers and arches reconsidered in respect with modern technology by use of reinforced concrete, created a dialogue with the landscape or with stoned vaults thrown upon the Alps deep abysses.

Cet article présente deux différents types de modèles fiabilistes pour la prévision de la durée de vie des tabliers de ponts en béton qui permettent une gestion efficace de la maintenance des ouvrages d'art. Le premier modèle est de type mécano fiabiliste où la performance physique de la dalle est décrite par une fonction appelée marge de sécurité, qui mesure la différence entre la résistance de la dalle et les effets des charges mécaniques et/ou environnementales sur la dalle. Ce type de modèle est utilisé pour prédire la variation avec le temps de la probabilité de défaillance de la dalle. Les différents temps pour atteindre les différents états de défaillance correspondant à différents états limites peuvent être prédis incluant les états de corrosion des armatures, fissuration, délaminage, éclatement du béton d'enrobage, et rupture. Un autre type de modèle qui prédit l'accumulation de l'endommagement de la dalle comme un processus stochastique a été développé. Dans ce modèle, la durée de vie de la dalle est prédite comme le temps ou l'état absorbant est atteint. Access to the medieval Vivarois road network in the Middle Ages and the links it maintains with settlement is at the heart of this work. First, we mapped the main Vivaran road routes. It turns out that they are very much oriented on an east-west axis, all connecting the Rhone furrow to the Massif Central by crossing the Vivarais. Then, we wanted to explain the polarization of the road network on an east-west axis, which led us to study the development of trade between the Rhône valley and the Massif Central, whether it be livestock, wine, salt, wood or grain. To trade, it is also necessary to associate pilgrimages towards Puy-en-Velay which attract a considerable number of people towards the Marian city, crossing the region and therefore contributing to the development of transversal axes. Thirdly, we studied the traffic conditions: characteristics of the roads, transport techniques, welcoming the traveler, etc. This work made it possible to show that although often reduced to the state of simple trails, the Vivarois roads are perfectly adapted to the techniques of transport by mules. We addressed the questions of welcoming the traveler, highlighting a shift from charitable hospitality to commercial hostel-type hospitality during the 14th century. Finally, we studied the distribution of the population around the road network, from the establishment of altimedieval parishes to the development of the urban network in the 13th century through the establishment of the castral network. IT clearly appears that, although the road network largely justifies the establishment of parishes in areas of late Christianization, in the Carolingian centuries, just as the main cities developed at major road junctions, village and castral seedlings in are very largely independent., L'accès au du réseau routier médiéval vivarois au Moyen Age et les liens qu'il entretient avec le peuplement est au cur de ce travail. Dans un premier temps, nous avons en cartographié les principaux itinéraires routiers vivarois. Il s'avère qu'il sont très largement orienté sur un axe est-ouest, tous reliant le sillon rhodanien au Massif Central en traversant le Vivarais. Ensuite, nous avons souhaité expliquer la polarisation du réseau routier sur un axe est-ouest, ce qui nous a amené à étudier le développement du commerce entre vallée du Rhône et Massif Central, qu'il s'agisse de cheptel, de vin, de sel, de bois ou de grain. Au commerce, il faut aussi associer les pèlerinages en direction du Puy-en-Velay qui drainent un nombre considérable de personnes en direction de la cité mariale, traversant la région et contribuant donc au développement des axes transversaux. Dans un troisième temps, nous avons étudié les conditions de circulation : caractéristiques des routes, techniques de transport, accueil du voyageur, etc. Ce travail a permis de montrer que bien qu'étant souvent réduites à l'état de simples sentes, les routes vivaroises sont parfaitement adaptées aux techniques de transport par mulets. Nous avons abordé les questions d'accueil du voyageur, mettant en évidence un glissement de l'accueil hospitalier charitable vers un accueil commercial de type auberge dans le courant du XIVe siècle. Pour finir, nous avons étudié la répartition du peuplement autour du réseau routier, depuis l'implantation des paroisses altimédiévales jusqu'au développement du réseau urbain au XIIIe siècle en passant par l'implantation du réseau castral. IL apparaît nettement que, si le réseau routier justifie pour une très large part l'implantation des paroisses dans les secteurs de christianisation tardive, aux siècles carolingiens, de même que les principales villes se développent aux carrefours routiers majeurs, les semis villageois et castraux en sont très largement indépendants.

The focus is on the decisions that successively led successive protagonists in this history to launch (or abandon) projects between 1903 and 2014, and the factors of economic geography and geopolitics that guided these decisions over time. In conclusion, one can imagine what effect a normalization of Crimea’s international legal status might have on today’s bridge traffic.

Precent transformations in Nantes' urban area can be analysed according to the ideas developped by Alain Chauvet in his thesis "Porte nantaise et isolat choletais". The natural constraints of the estuary continue to influence the city center's current renovations. Yet, the building of five bridges over the river Loire in less than ten years, has removed the traditional obstacle to traffic. The successive place names : Prairie-au-Duc, Beaulieu, Saint-Anne, Ile de Nantes, reveal decision makers' and city planners' projects or dreams., Les transformations actuelles de l'agglomération nantaise peuvent être analysées en s'appuyant sur les réflexions d'Alain Chauvet, développées dans sa thèse "Porte nantaise et isolat choletais". Les contraintes naturelles estuariennes continuent de peser sur les aménagements contemporains du coeur de l'agglomération. Toutefois, l'obstacle traditionnel de la traversée de la Loire se trouve levé par la construction de cinq ponts en moins de dix ans.
