This article deals with the development of a course in cinema for students in a French programme of an Australian university. The author justifies her key pedagogical choices both with respect to the proposed analysis of the cinematic texts studied (an intercultural approach dealing with genre and intertextuality) and to the activity required of students (collaborative construction of wiki pages discussing the films). The first part of the paper presents an example of the kind of analysis that was presented to students, with a contrastive discussion of the French film Le Pacte des Loups and the Australian film Razorback in terms of generic mixity, local adaptation of wider cinematic tropes and questions of cultural representation. The second reports on a learning activity in which students, in collaboration with peers, built multimodal wiki pages presenting their own analyses of films. These wikis were open for viewing by all class members and generated discussion across groups. Finally, the author evaluates the use of the wikis, in terms of student reaction to them and also her own pedagogical objectives in encouraging deeper, critical, analysis of the films chosen. A French teacher's journal notes about his experience as a student in an intensive English course in a foreign country are presented. The notes address aspects of the language learning experience, including unfamiliar cultural context, intrusion of the new language into daily thought, resistance, translation, interference, and motivation. Aquatic animal disease outbreaks affect both the public (represented by the government) and the private sector (represented by the aquaculture and fisheries industry). However, all too often, the responsibilities and costs of responding to an outbreak may not be shared. Without a mechanism for public and private sectors to work together, the outcomes of an emergency response may not be ideal, or of common benefit to all potentially affected parties. In Australia, a mechanism is being developed for public and private sectors to share the responsibilities and costs of responding to aquatic animal disease outbreaks, through an industry- government aquatic emergency animal disease response agreement. The agreement provides an approach for both public and private sectors to share the responsibilities and costs of responding to a disease outbreak and to coordinate disease prevention activities to reduce their shared risk. The key elements of the agreement include provisions to incentivise faster notification of disease outbreaks, facilitate a faster response, share decision-making and costs (including compensation for affected businesses), clarify the responsibilities of all parties and, most importantly, strengthen risk mitigation activities. This paper describes how the draft agreement has been developed among 18 industry and government parties, how key elements of the agreement may contribute to improved aquatic animal health outcomes, and the principles which could be applied by other OIE Member Countries.

This paper attempts to give an overview of current levels of child mortality prevailing in the world. It also examines trends and socioeconomic differentials in child mortality for selected countries and regions of the world. Lastly it reviews data on causes of child death and related environmental factors. The paper concludes that despite the fact that child deaths are frequently avoidable, mortality differentials between the developed and developing regions of the world are more pronounced in childhood (ages one to under five years) than at any other time of life. While some developing countries have substantially reduced the level of mortality in childhood, in others it remains very high. In contrast, in most developed countries child death rates are now so low, that they no longer serve as useful measures of public health.
