2. Prevention of Child Accidents at Home.

Abstract

In three languages, Spanish, French and English, these materials provide facts, background information and guides for preventing accidental harm to children. The materials, organized in three identical packets consisting of four pamphlets, offer information for mass media specialists, guidelines for administrators and decision makers, a technical note for kindergarten and elementary school teachers and parents, plus technical notes for university and other teaching staff. Contents of the packets include tables of data, a discussion of the child's need for adult supervision in a hazardous environment, reasons for accident prevention programs, preventive action at home and at school, extent and causes of accidents, and a discussion of the role of medical personnel in accident prevention. 3. Immunization.

Abstract

These pamphlets present facts, background information and guides on the immunization of children against preventable diseases. Individual pamphlets are provided for mass media specialists, health personnel in the field, health policy makers and program administrators, as well as university personnel. Contents include a specification of the role of the media in immunization efforts; a discussion of when, against what, and how to immunize; guides for organizing immunization programs; an overview of program planning and implementation considerations; and a review of the biophysiology of immunization. This set of documents consists of English, French, and Spanish translations of four pamphlets on infant stimulation. The pamphlets provide information designed for lay persons, educators and primary care personnel, academics and professionals, and for health administrators and family-planning organizations. The contents cover infant needs; infant mortality rates in world regions; the influence on infant development of different child rearing practices; infant characteristics at different periods of development; factors linked to retarded development and the effectiveness of intervention attempts; and stimulation of language and intelligence in young children. 5. Educational Research in Relation to the Rights of the Child (Les Sciences De L'Education en Relation Aux Droits De L'Enfant).

Abstract

This collection of 24 articles explores how educational research, programs and policies in several countries are related to the issue of children's rights. Several of the collected articles focus on aspects of children's experience and development. Group membership, children's right to happiness, the development of an optimistic outlook among children, students' responsibilities, growing up at school, socialization, personality development, psychological effects of educational programs on immigrant children, the position of the teacher discussing controversial issues, the orientation of children toward work, child abuse and neglect, the human rights of the juvenile delinquent, and individual differences of children are among the topics discussed. Some of the articles explore social conditions and describe institutional practices. The relationship of class differences and equality of opportunity, educational practices and the rights of infants, education in the German Democratic Republic, sexual differentiation in educational programs, and problems of sanitation, education and society are among the topics discussed. Additionally, several articles examine the nature and methods of educational research and suggest future directions for such research. (Author/RH)
