1. Prevention of Child Accidents at Home.

Abstract

In three languages, Spanish, French and English, these materials provide facts, background information and guides for preventing accidental harm to children. The materials, organized in three identical packets consisting of four pamphlets, offer information for mass media specialists, guidelines for administrators and decision makers, a technical note for kindergarten and elementary school teachers and parents, plus technical notes for university and other teaching staff. Contents of the packets include tables of data, a discussion of the child's need for adult supervision in a hazardous environment, reasons for accident prevention programs, preventive action at home and at school, extent and causes of accidents, and a discussion of the role of medical personnel in accident prevention. 2. Immunization.

Abstract

These pamphlets present facts, background information and guides on the immunization of children against preventable diseases. Individual pamphlets are provided for mass media specialists, health personnel in the field, health policy makers and program administrators, as well as university personnel. Contents include a specification of the role of the media in immunization efforts; a discussion of when, against what, and how to immunize; guides for organizing immunization programs; an overview of program planning and implementation considerations; and a review of the biophysiology of immunization. This set of documents consists of English, French, and Spanish translations of four pamphlets on infant stimulation. The pamphlets provide information designed for lay persons, educators and primary care personnel, academics and professionals, and for health administrators and family-planning organizations. The contents cover infant needs; infant mortality rates in world regions; the influence on infant development of different child rearing practices; infant characteristics at different periods of development; factors linked to retarded development and the effectiveness of intervention attempts; and stimulation of language and intelligence in young children. 4. Teaching Writing in the Foreign Language Curriculum. Language in Education: Theory and Practice, 43.

Abstract

A text-editing approach to composition in the foreign language classroom is set forth. In a 15-week composition course meeting three times each week, students prepare a weekly composition that they will revise after an in-class text-editing session involving several student papers. The third day is devoted to grammar work. Criteria for evaluating student compositions are set forth. Progress in writing skill is enhanced by careful attention to prose style, and students are encouraged to write pastiches. Finally, students are required to keep a journal. Testing and grading are discussed, and situations commonly encountered by teachers are dealt with. Appendices include suggestions for or samples of personal assessment statement, course introduction for a basic French composition course, grammar mid-term, student evaluation of course, prose style analysis checklist, grammar review sheet, sentence-embedding exercises, and tests. Samples of student work (composition outlines, prose style analyses, and pastiches) are presented, most with the actual text-editing corrections of the teacher. The paper concludes with suggested texts for pastiche exercises. (JB)

The contents cover health-related differences between breast and bottle milk; patterns of decline in breast-feeding in selected countries and years; causes of this decline and recommendations for improvement; the biological value of breast-feeding; the role of health personnel in influencing the mother's decision to breast-feed; and the elements of a policy for promoting breast-feeding. Abstract

This guide, intended for secondary school teachers of French and Spanish, integrates the teaching of culture and literature with a focus on the child in the target culture. The readings and discussion notes are designed to focus student attention on the target culture through these topics. An introductory section discusses the teaching of culture through literature. The second section provides reading outlines for independent study on specific segments of Francophone and Spanish literature (e.g., African and Antillean, Mexican, etc.). The third section contains a series of short papers on children in literature, and the fourth consists of instructional plans for individual literary works. The fifth and final section lists supplementary instructional aids and materials for each language. An extensive list of references is contained in this section.
