A linguistic personality is capable of transforming consciously and unconsciously under the influence of a number of factors and it can change qualitatively, including turning from a strong and average into a weak linguistic personality, moving to a lower, presystemic semantic-structural level. Among such factors, various influences in religious organizations play an important role. The relevance of the proposed article on the one hand, is due to the active use of “speaking in tongues” by believers in a number of religious organizations, and on the other hand, to the lack of an unambiguous understanding of this phenomenon and its impact on people, the lack of linguistic studies of such speaking. The purpose of the research conducted in the article is to identify the essence, goals and consequences of such a phenomenon as “speaking in tongues”, which is practiced in particular by adherents of the Pentecostal religious organization “Bethany” and compare these parameters with what is promoted. There is a reason to imply some difference between the interpretations. The definition of the so called “angelic languages”, which the Bethanyians consider to be real, serving communication, leads to the conclusion that its use puts a person into a trance, plunges into an altered state of consciousness, deprives the ability to reflect. This is indicated by certain lexical and syntactic means found in the statements of Pentecostals, including adherents of Bethany, analysis of videos and texts posted on the websites of these religious organizations. The article examines the religious origins “speaking in tongues”, modern interpretations of this phenomenon by believers, reveals the distortion of the concept of “speaking in tongues” by Pentecostals and adherents of Bethany, unfolds the means of manipulating believers in explaining the phenomenon of glossolalia (e.g., interpretation of religious texts, manipulation of numbers, affecting the emotions and feelings of believers, sometimes odd explanations). Subsequently, the authors come to the conclusion that in some cases Bethany representatives deliberately build their speech communication to immerse the flock as often as possible in a state of altered consciousness, affect, ecstasy, when a person renounces reality, becomes unable to answer for his words and actions. Then people might become vulnerable to the necessary suggestion.

Background. The article focuses on the manipulative influence issues in sports analytical articles. Nowadays our life is significantly affected by sport and key sports events are covered by mass media. Since one of the major functions of mass media is the function to influence the reader, an attempt to analyze the mechanisms of manipulation within the framework of sports discourse seems to be reasonable. Based on the theoretical research study, it is established that manipulation is primarily characterized by its covert nature. In the practical part an analysis of linguistic ways of representation of manipulation on lexical and syntactical levels is given. Purpose. The purpose of the study is to define the mechanisms of manipulation in sports analytical articles and to analyze their linguistic side. Materials and methods. The research material comprises 7 sports analytical articles of 2024 taken from digital versions of the British magazines such as The Guardian and The Sun. The main research methods include analysis and synthesis of theoretical materials, discourse and contextual analysis together with descriptive method. The methods enumerated have given an opportunity to obtain accurate data on linguistic representation of various ways of manipulation in sports discourse. Results. The results of the study have shown that sports analytical articles possess a significant potential to influence the reader due to some manipulative methods such as hedges, labels, first person pronoun in a plural form, rhetorical questions and multiplication. The ways of linguistic representation of these manipulative methods are analyzed. Practical implications. The research results can be used for further investigation of ways of manipulation within sports analytical articles as well as in the development of courses on speech influence and sports discourse.

The article examines the syntactic means of speech influence in the commercial discourse. The goal of the study is to describe the linguistic means of the compositional-dynamic and expres- sive syntax that form the speech-influencing potential of South African companies’ commercial texts. The work is relevant due to enhancing the mutually beneficial cooperation within the BRICS countries in the field of international commerce. The main method of research is a critical discourse analysis. The research involves analysing more than 50 commercial texts that become the object of pragmatic and psycholinguistic analysis for the first time. The phenomena of speech influence, per- suasion and manipulation in the interaction of business actors in order to get mutual commercial benefits are considered. The study results in a comprehensive description of the most frequently used expressive syntactic means in the context of pragmatic analysis. Speech influence manifests itself in the potential of syntactic means in the English commercial discourse that can enable busi- ness partners to create a situational context by setting their intentions and taking into account the addressee’s factors actualisation. The research concludes that the expressive syntactic means of speech influence in the commercial discourse can be used in synergy with other linguistic, extralin- guistic and symbolic tools to enhance the effect of their interaction for achieving the communicative goal and the strategic results in business.

The relevance of this work is due to the significance of E. Poe’s works for world literature and the constant interest of scientists in the peculiarities of his work, as well as the need to study the idiostyle features of the implementation of contrast in E. Poe’s poetry. The purpose of the work is to describe the types of contrast present in E. Poe’s poetry and the linguistic means of their implementation. The author suggests that contrast is one of the idiostyle dominates of E. Poe’s works of fiction. The assumption about the significance of contrast for the poetry of E. Poe is based on works in the field of literary criticism, which analyze his works and note that the general principle of Poe’s poetics is emotional and psychological influence on readers. An important role in the implementation of such influence belongs to contrast. According to the results of the analysis of empirical material, these types include microcontrast implemented in a separate fragment of the text, and macrocontrast, significant for the compositional and semantic structure of the entire work (the juxtaposition of the text and the title, the beginning and end, the beginning and the main part of the text, etc.). Microcontrast in Poe’s works is embodied by using system antonyms. The poet can use two antonymic oppositions in contact, which enhances the expressiveness of contrast. E. Poe also uses individual author’s antonyms, verbalizing in an unusual form conjugated concepts opposed to each other and correlating with the systemic antonymic opposition as well as antonyms belonging to different parts of speech. Macrocontrast is created either with words that are not system antonyms, but belong to contrasting semantic fields or with means of negation. Rather often the contrast is exclusively semantic without the participation of contrasting language means. The article describes different types of micricontrast typical of Poe’s works.

The relevance of the problems of ideology, patriotism, and national identity, the manipulation of consciousness is gaining a new reflection in the conceptual picture of the world and society. This scientific article is devoted to the study of concepts in the public speeches of American and Kazakh politicians. The issues of political linguistics are becoming an increasingly relevant research object for many linguists. The purpose of the scientific article is to identify and consider methods of language representation and implementation of the system of concepts in the speeches of the president of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the president of the United States of America. Using content analysis, we identified a system of concepts in the president’s inaugural speech. An analysis of the concepts of the political picture of the world revealed and understood the target orientation of speech influences, the motives, and the true meaning of the statements of political figures, shedding light on the nature and essence of political processes.

В статье рассматривается речевое поведение отправителя сообщения с точки зрения скрытой прагмалингвистики, научного направления, занимающегося вопросами скрытого (неосознаваемого) речевого воздействия. Сопоставляются речевое поведение и речевая деятельность коммуникантов. Автор делает акцент на стратегической составляющей речевого поведения человека. Стратегии актуализируются в речи в виде одного из планов-вариантов, рассматриваются как типы речевого поведения. Приводится классификация стратегий скрытого воздействия, раскрывается механизм их функционирования. Анализ стратегий в речевом поведении отправителя сообщения позволяет диагностировать некоторые личностные свойства как отдельного автора, так социальной группы в целом, а также выявлять доминирующие линии речевого воздействия на получателя сообщения.

This contribution explores the representation of the verbal image of aggression in the texts of the English-language digital mass media. The research is based on the quantitative and qualitative semantic analyses of 174 authentic English texts (journalistic reports and newspaper articles) produced during the period of 2013-2015 and selected on the basis of special criteria, which were elaborated in our previous works on detecting descriptors of aggression in written texts. The aim of the research is to reveal the structural components of the verbal image of aggression reproduced in the worldview of Russian native speakers after reading English texts (British and American digital newspapers articles) and to find out if the resulting cognitive model refers to the real act of aggression. The paper contributes to the research field of psycholinguistics, emphasizing the need to support people’s psychological health in the context of an aggressive media environment, which produces high psychological tension. The research methodology is based on a modified associative experiment procedure, which involves 98 native speakers of Russian (university students majoring in linguistics and translation). The obtained results demonstrate a great variability of the structural elements of aggression verbalized in mass media texts. They also indicate that the focus of the reader’s attention is deliberately shifted towards the formation of a hostile cognitive model of the world, with the aggressor and the third party involved in the aggressive act in the center of the battlefield, and the victim of aggression on the periphery. The findings are illustrated by textual examples from authentic British and American newspaper articles and supplied with the author’s commentaries.

The article deals with one of the elements of the investigator’s speech behavior - didacticism during the interrogation of suspected persons. This behavior of the investigator is aimed at the implementation of the educational function in his professional activities. The analysis of the interrogations in eight novels by Russian authors and eight novels by English authors revealed the most frequent language markers of educational intentions, characterizing the main illocutions of the investigators' speech behavior, related to obtaining evidence from the defendant. The object of the study was the slots of the statements of investigators and a detective story with an educational illocution orientation. A statistical analysis of the results was carried out in order to determine the frequency of use of certain language means in the implementation of the educational function in the work of investigators and detectives. The article also provides a comparative analysis of the characteristics of markers of educational intentions in Russian and English linguocultural community, as well as the dominant speech behavior of Russian and English investigators, aimed at their pedagogical impact on the person under investigation.

The article is devoted to manipulation in advertising as an important component of the media space, its difference from honest persuasion. Manipulation is considered to be a sharply negative phenomenon that violates ethical norms of communication. With honest persuasion, language means work to achieve the most important quality of speech – clarity, while manipulation under any circumstances does not seek to achieve clarity. In contrast to the manipulation persuasion is implemented and verified with consciousness. In two types of discourse – advertising and political ones – manipulation is most often used. If manipulative techniques in commercial advertising are generally well identified, but it is rather difficult to identify manipulation in social advertising. Legislative measures are not always confirmed in advertising practices. The advertising process should be managed and controlled by specialized state regulatory bodies, the area of responsibility includes the improvement of the national legislation in the relevant field, but the complexity of the advertising process determines the need for control, taking into consideration the special Code of the advertiser ethics. Such a code is naturally based not only on a set of rules of social behaviour, but also on a special professionally determined axiological system. The quality of advertising should be inseparable from the level of the civil society development. It is necessary to develop linguistic and legal expertise of advertising and media criticism, which will answer the following questions: whether advertising texts comply with the Laws "On advertising" and "On protection of consumer rights". The article reveals the main provisions of the concept of speech influence and describes its theoretical model, which was developed by well-known psycholinguist of the 20th century A.A. Leontiev. The main ideas of this concept are explicated within the scope of the problem of speech communication and conditioned by this verbal act processes of speaking of the communicator (speaker) and listening of the recipient (s). The speech influence is considered by the researcher of this problem at the level of the internal and external stages of the communicative-speech processes generation of the speaker and the recipient. That is why A.A. Leontiev pays great attention in this concept to the analysis of such psycholinguistic phenomena as: «value», «sense», «semantic field of the recipient», «sign», «internal speech», «internal programming», «act of speaking» etc. The article reveals the following aspects: a) established by A.A. Leontiev evolution of the forms of communication and its psychological and semiotic mediation; b) separated by him stages of the historical formation of the activity of communication, in particular its final stage – the speech effect, which becomes a professional activity, motivated «from inside the self»; c) distinguished by the researcher notions of «speech» and «speech activity», d) defined by him the notion of «communication» and its varieties, e) associated with orientation – the criterion of speech communication – speech effect, which is characterized as one of the aspects of psychological content of communication, g) identified by three parameters phenomenon of the sign and applied in its interpretation two methods of scientific analysis important for a deep understanding of speech influence used, through the processes of understanding (the transition from a sign to the thought) and through the objectification of the subjective communicative intention (the transition from a thought to the sign) and other important provisions of the proposed concept. The content of this manuscript also describes the psycholinguistic model of speech effect, which, according to the author, has statuses or psychological actions, or appears as an independent activity with its own motive, has a feedback, acts in various forms of interference with consciousness and subconscious of the personality, etc.; the ways of achieving changes in the recipient’s existing values under the influence of the content of communicator’s speech are represented; the three-layer psycholinguistic structure of the speech influence is substantiated. In the debating section of the article, it is suggested to consider the scientific work of A.A. Leontiev concerning the speech influence as a psycholinguistic theory, by taking into account its theoretical and practical significance for modern science and communicative practice.

The article considers the peculiarities of content and of means to express incentive modality as a universal category in the public service announcement discourse in the Russian and German languages. It was shown that institutional features of the advertising type under consideration cause changes in the communicative situation that affects the ways of incentive expression, which largely depend on the ethnic and cultural traits. The plane of content of incentive modality in the public service announcement discourse is characterized by the predominance of the directive speech acts over the comissives. The suggestive speech acts (advice, warning, and instruction) and the appeals are widespread due to the execution by public service announcements functions of behavioral patterns creation and stimulation of recipient's participation in problem solving. The prescriptive speech acts are not widely spread, because their pragmatic presupposition assumes a subordinate position of the addressee towards the addresser that is unrealizable in conditions of public service announcements. The request is infrequent because of the dependent status of the message sender. The plane of expression incentive modality in the public service announcement discourse in the German and Russian languages is characterized by the high frequency of use of imperatives and declarative sentences which get seme of incentive in certain pragmatic conditions. As a result of the functional-semantic analysis of the incentive modality microfield in the public service announcement discourse in the German and Russian languages the authors draw a conclusion on the typological and intralinguistic features of the incentive expression.

The paper discusses the problems of researching business presentation as new genre of business communication. Studying of this genre corresponds to the business linguistics perspective – the actual interdisciplinary direction of modern linguistics focused on studying of various formats of communication in the sphere of business. The actual perspective of business linguistics is considered. The characteristic of the genre of business presentation from the point of view of features of the communicative situation, the purposes and means of the speech impact made by the businessman on the potential investor are exposed. On the basis of the review of scientific literature on the subject of the research, conclusions about the need for further studying of business presentations are drawn.
