Abstract

A new proton-unbound isotope $^{204}$Ac was produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction Tm(40169Ca,5n)204Ac and identified via the recoil-α correlation at the gas-filled recoiled separators SHANS2 and SHANS. The excitation function for producing $^{204}$Ac was measured and the optimal beam energy was evaluated to be 212 MeV. Nineteen ER - α1 - α2 - α3 decay chains were observed for this isotope. Based on these chains, the α-particle energy and half-life of $^{204}$Ac were determined to be 7948(15) keV and 7.4−1.4+2.2 ms, respectively. Both are consistent with the theoretical prediction. The reduced α-decay width was deduced to be 49−15+10 keV, which indicates a favored α decay for $^{204}$Ac. In addition, more precise decay properties of Eα = 7883(15) keV and T1/2 = 7.7−1.6+2.7 ms were obtained for $^{205}$Ac.

Abstract

The decay of $^{218}$Pa was investigated by means of α and γ spectroscopy. The nucleus was produced in the fusion reaction $^{40}$Ar+$^{182}$W and separated in flight by the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS (Spectrometer for Heavy Atoms and Nuclear Structure). The known α decays of $^{218}$Pa were measured with improved precision and newly assigned to be originating from the ground state, which clarified the ambiguities in their previous assignments. In addition, a new isomeric state in $^{218}$Pa decaying with α-particle energies of 9691(15) keV, 9595(21) keV and a half-life of 135−32+62 μs was identified. The spins and parities of the involved states were tentatively assigned on the basis of the systematic α-decay properties of the odd-proton N=127 isotones and shell model calculations.

Abstract

Fine structure in the α decay of $^{223}$U was observed in the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{187}$Re($^{40}$Ar, p3n) by using fast digital pulse processing technique. Two α-decay branches of $^{223}$U feeding the ground state and 244 keV excited state of $^{219}$Th were identified by establishing the decay chain $^{223}$U →α1 $^{219}$Th →α2 $^{215}$Ra →α3 $^{211}$Rn. The α-particle energy for the ground-state to ground-state transition of $^{223}$U was determined to be 8993(17) keV, 213 keV higher than the previous value, the half-life was updated to be 62−10+14 μs. Evolution of nuclear structure for N = 131 even-Z isotones from Po to U was discussed in the frameworks of nuclear mass and reduced α-decay width, a weakening octupole deformation in the ground state of $^{223}$U relative to its lighter isotones $^{219}$Ra and $^{221}$Th was suggested.

The semi-magic nucleus $^{219}$Np was produced in the fusion reaction $^{187}$Re($^{36}$Ar, 4n)$^{219}$Np at the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS (Spectrometer for Heavy Atoms and Nuclear Structure). A fast electronics system based on waveform digitizers was used in the data acquisition and the sampled pulses were processed by digital algorithms. The reaction products were identified using spatial and time correlations between the implants and subsequent α decays. According to the observed α-decay chain, an energy of Eα=9039(40) keV and a half-life of T1/2=0.15−0.07+0.72 ms were determined for $^{219}$Np. The deduced proton binding energy of $^{219}$Np fits well into the systematics, which gives another evidence of that there is no sub-shell closure at Z=92. The influence of the N=126 shell closure on the stability of Np isotopes is discussed within the framework of α-decay reduced widths.

Abstract

The N=130 short-lived isotope 223Np was produced as evaporation residue (ER) in the fusion reaction 40Ar + 187Re at the gas-filled recoil separator Spectrometer for Heavy Atom and Nuclear Structure (SHANS). It was identified through temporal and spatial correlations with α decays of 215Ac and/or 211Fr, the third and fourth members of the α-decay chain starting from 223Np. The pileup signals of ER(223Np)–α(223Np)–α(219Pa) were resolved by using the digital pulse processing technique. An α decay with half-life of T1/2=2.15(52100) μs and energy of Eα=9477(44)keV was attributed to 223Np. Spin and parity of 9/2− were tentatively proposed for the ground state of 223Np by combining the reduced α-decay width and large-scale shell-model calculations. This assignment together with the proton separation energy disprove the existence of a Z=92 subshell closure.

Abstract

A new substrate (quasi-3D) combined with both three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) networks for MmNi5-based alloy electrodes was developed. The substrate effect on electrode packing density, porosity, loading capacity, electrode thickness, α (=Ws (substrate weight)/We (electrode weight)) and rate capability has been investigated to compare with conventional foamed nickel (3D) and punching metal (2D). The results showed that thin electrodes with punching metal substrates had better rate capability than those with foamed nickel substrates, while both kinds of the substrates had low packing density. Further results indicated that under the condition of the similar electrode thickness, the electrode using the new developed (quasi-3D) substrate showed better performance than those with punching metal and foamed nickel substrates, and could simultaneously keep high packing density and rate capability. It is suggested that this new developed substrate is more suitable for high power applications in nickel/metal hydride batteries. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Presented is a new clustering algorithm with approximate distributed clustering over a peer-to-peer (P2P) network. The Fisher discriminant ratio is used to dynamically learn the confidence radius based on the data distribution in every local peer. Abstract

The N = 130 short-lived isotope 223 Np was produced as evaporation residue (ER) in the fusion reaction 40 Ar + 187 Re at the gas-filled recoil separator Spectrometer for Heavy Atom and Nuclear Structure (SHANS). It was identified through temporal and spatial correlations with α decays of 215 Ac and/or 211 Fr, the third and fourth members of the α -decay chain starting from 223 Np. The pileup signals of ER( 223 Np)– α ( 223 Np)– α ( 219 Pa) were resolved by using the digital pulse processing technique. An α decay with half-life of T 1 / 2 = 2.15 ( 52 100 ) μs and energy of E α = 9477 ( 44 ) keV was attributed to 223 Np. Spin and parity of 9 / 2 − were tentatively proposed for the ground state of 223 Np by combining the reduced α -decay width and large-scale shell-model calculations. Abstract

A new proton-unbound isotope 204Ac was produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction Tm ( 40 169 Ca , 5n) 204 Ac and identified via the recoil- α correlation at the gas-filled recoiled separators SHANS2 and SHANS. The excitation function for producing 204Ac was measured and the optimal beam energy was evaluated to be 212 MeV. Nineteen ER - α 1 - α 2 - α 3 decay chains were observed for this isotope. Based on these chains, the α -particle energy and half-life of 204Ac were determined to be 7948(15) keV and 7.4 − 1.4 + 2.2 ms, respectively. Both are consistent with the theoretical prediction. The reduced α -decay width was deduced to be 49 − 15 + 10 keV, which indicates a favored α decay for 204Ac. In addition, more precise decay properties of E α = 7883(15) keV and T 1 / 2 = 7.7 − 1.6 + 2.7 ms were obtained for 205Ac. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic ray helium nuclei from 70 GeV to 80 TeV using 4.5 years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is reported in this work. A hardening of the spectrum is observed at an energy of about 1.3 TeV, similar to previous observations. In addition, a spectral softening at about 34 TeV is revealed for the first time with large statistics and well controlled systematic uncertainties, with an overall significance of $4.3\sigma$. The DAMPE spectral measurements of both cosmic protons and helium nuclei suggest a particle charge dependent softening energy, although with current uncertainties a dependence on the number of nucleons cannot be ruled out., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, published in Phys. Abstract

Abstract: Ti3AlC2/Al2O3 nanopowders were synthesized by the combination of mechanically-induce self-propagating reaction (MSR) of Ti, C, Al and TiO2 powder mixtures and subsequently heat treatment. Effects of high energy milling and heat treatment temperatures on the phase transformation were investigated in detail. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to characterize the powders of milled and annealed, respectively. The morphology and microstructure of as fabricated products were also studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results show that TiC, Ti x Al y and Al2O3 transitional phases were formed when the initial powder mixtures were milled for 24h. The desired Ti3AlC2/Al2O3 nanopowders with high purity were obtained when annealed the as-milled powders at 1100°C. SEM image confirmed that the as fabricated Ti3AlC2/Al2O3 particles has nanocrystalline layered structural matrix of Ti3AlC2, and the second phase of nanosized Al2O3 disperses uniformly in the Ti3AlC2 matrix. Abstract

Fine structure in the α decay of 223U was observed in the fusion-evaporation reaction 187Re(40Ar, p3n) by using fast digital pulse processing technique. Two α -decay branches of 223U feeding the ground state and 244 keV excited state of 219Th were identified by establishing the decay chain 223U → α 1 219Th → α 2 215Ra → α 3 211Rn. The α -particle energy for the ground-state to ground-state transition of 223U was determined to be 8993(17) keV, 213 keV higher than the previous value, the half-life was updated to be 62 − 10 + 14 μs. Evolution of nuclear structure for N = 131 even- Z isotones from Po to U was discussed in the frameworks of nuclear mass and reduced α -decay width, a weakening octupole deformation in the ground state of 223U relative to its lighter isotones 219Ra and 221Th was suggested.
